Abstract:The dynamics of iron (Fe)-bound organic carbon (OC) during dissimilatory microbial Fe(III) reduction has the potential to play an important role in regulating the biogeochemical cycling of carbon (C) in permanently or transiently anoxic soils and sediments. In this study, we investigated the release and transformation of ferrihydrite (Fh)-bound OC during microbial reduction of Fe by Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32 under a fixed Fe concentration of 13mM and varying C/Fe molar ratios. We found that reduction of Fe and reductive release of OC was dependent on the C/Fe molar ratio, with high C/Fe ratio enhancing both reduction of Fe and release of OC. For Fh-OC co-precipitates with C/Fe ratio of 3.7, 54.7% of Fh-bound OC was released to solution phase when 25.1% of Fe was reduced. The presence of OC inhibited the transformation of Fh to more crystalline Fe phases both in the bulk and on the surface. Upon reduction, Fh-bound OC became more concentrated on the surface of Fh-OC co-precipitates, and surface components were enriched with carboxylic functional groups. Reduction increased the lability of Fh-bound OC for Fh-OC co-precipitate with C/Fe ratio of 3.7, and aromatic OC was preferentially retained within the co-precipitates. Our results indicate that microbial reduction altered the quantity and composition of OC released from Fh-OC co-precipitates, depending on the C/Fe ratio and associations between Fe and OC. Assuming higher availability of released OC compared to original Fh-bound OC, reduction of Fh can likely lead to enhanced degradation of OC and result in a shorter residence time for OC in soils and sediments.

Abstract:Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is the causative agent of tuberculosis. Access to iron in host macrophages depends on iron-chelating siderophores called mycobactins and is strongly correlated with Mtb virulence. Here, the crystal structure of an Mtb enzyme involved in mycobactin biosynthesis, MbtN, in complex with its FAD cofactor is presented at 2.30 Å resolution. The polypeptide fold of MbtN conforms to that of the acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (ACAD) family, consistent with its predicted role of introducing a double bond into the acyl chain of mycobactin. Structural comparisons and the presence of an acyl carrier protein, MbtL, in the same gene locus suggest that MbtN acts on an acyl-(acyl carrier protein) rather than an acyl-CoA. A notable feature of the crystal structure is the tubular density projecting from N(5) of FAD. This was interpreted as a covalently bound polyethylene glycol (PEG) fragment and resides in a hydrophobic pocket where the substrate acyl group is likely to bind. The pocket could accommodate an acyl chain of 14-21 C atoms, consistent with the expected length of the mycobactin acyl chain. Supporting this, steady-state kinetics show that MbtN has ACAD activity, preferring acyl chains of at least 16 C atoms. The acyl-binding pocket adopts a different orientation (relative to the FAD) to other structurally characterized ACADs. This difference may be correlated with the apparent ability of MbtN to catalyse the formation of an unusual cis double bond in the mycobactin acyl chain.
Influence of Time and Ageing Conditions on the Properties of Ferrihydrite

Abstract:Natural conversion of ferrihydrite (Fh), a widespread Fe(III)-oxyhydroxide mineral at the Earth's surface, to thermodynamically more stable iron oxides such as goethite (Gt) and hematite (Hm) is a slow process that spans months to years. Here we examined the effects of synthesis and storage conditions on the hydration, the ratio of tetrahedral to octahedral iron sites, and the transformation of naturally aged 2-line Fh at room temperature and mildly acidic pH over an ageing period of 5 years. Fh samples synthesized and aged in either aerobic or anaerobic conditions were characterized over time by XRD, SEM, thermogravimetric analysis – mass spectroscopy (TGA-MS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopies (XANES and XMCD). The findings show that the ratio of tetrahedral to octahedral Fe(III) sites in Fh is correlated to its extent of hydration, with fresher Fh samples exhibiting a higher ratio and more bound water. Fresh Fh aged in aerobic conditions has similar bound inorganic carbon, is more hydrated, and has less tetrahedral Fe(III) than that aged in anaerobic conditions. Hence, for relatively fresh Fh there is a link between Fh properties and storage conditions. However, the long-term ageing characteristics, such as the transformation rate and relative phase fraction of Gt and Hm products, are not noticeably impacted by storage conditions. TGA-MS measurements coupled with O K-edge XANES spectra confirm that Fh tends to lose its hydration as it ages, as expected. Corresponding Fe L2,3-edge XMCD spectra reveal that this dehydration is coupled to a steady decrease in the ratio of tetrahedral to octahedral Fe(III) sites. In addition to the obvious constraints these findings place on making comparisons across Fh samples of different age and environmental settings, they also highlight that Fh structure, and consequently magnetism, are linked to its bound water content.

Abstract:Learning in a signaled avoidance procedure was studied in the eye withdrawal reflex of the green crab, Carcinus maenas. A puff of air to the eye, which causes eye retraction, was used as the unconditioned stimulus (US). A mild vibration on the carapace, which has no effect on untrained animals, was used as a warning (conditioned) stimulus (CS). Eye withdrawal during the CS led to the omission of the otherwise scheduled US. Acquisition was rapid, reaching about 75% avoidance after 30 trials. Extinction occurred slowly over the course of 40 CS-only trials. Yoked controls did not perform as well. The behavior of experimental animals in the avoidance procedure was found to be essentially identical to the performance of animals subjected to a classical conditioning paradigm in which CS responses had no effect on US presentation. Additional groups of animals were subjected to experiments in which (a) avoidance conditioning (60 trials) was followed by classical conditioning (40 trials) or (b) classical conditioning was followed by avoidance. The behavior of these groups was, again, essentially identical. The results suggest that there may be an underlying Pavlovian mechanism for the learned response, although the contribution of an operant process is not excluded. The results expand the range of invertebrate animals in which fundamental conditioning phenomena can be demonstrated, and may provide a neuronal model for learning in a signaled avoidance procedure.
Organic matter stabilization in young calcareous soils as revealed by density fractionation and analysis of lignin-derived constituents

Abstract:The mechanisms of organic matter (OM) stabilization and possible organic–mineral interactions in alkaline soils rich in Ca (calcareous soils) were investigated. We sampled soils that developed over a period of 70 years under natural succession from homogeneous calcareous and organic-free substrate resulting from industrial production. We took advantage of a shift from non-woody to woody angiosperm vegetation with increasing soil age and tracked lignin as an indicator of the fate of plant residues. Using density separation in combination with ultrasonic dispersion, four fractions were obtained: (1) free particulate OM (FPOM), (2) OM occluded within soil aggregates (OPOM), (3) heavy fraction with a density of 1.6–2.2gcm−3 and (4) heavy fraction with a density >2.2gcm−3. The fractions were analysed for C, N, CuO oxidation products and mineral composition. Accumulation of OM by occlusion within aggregates contributed little (4–16%) to the total organic C in the soils. The dominant portion of organic C was in the fractions >1.6gcm−3. Lignin phenols in the fractions >1.6gcm−3 showed the most intensive diagenetic alteration as reflected in small yields of vanillic, syringic and cinnamic (VSC) lignin and stronger oxidation of the side chains of vanillyl phenols. In contrast to the POM fractions, the fractions >1.6gcm−3 from the older sites conserved the non-woody angiosperm lignin signature of the former vegetation, indicating slower OM turnover. The mineral composition of the two heavy fractions clearly differed, with layered double hydroxides (i.e., hydrotalcite and hydrocalumite) dominating the fractions >1.6gcm−3 and calcite dominating the fractions >2.2gcm−3. We conclude that partly degraded lignin, enriched in acidic groups, accumulated in the fraction 1.6–2.2gcm−3, due to preferential adsorption to the positively charged layered double hydroxides. Although representing only a small portion of the soil mineral assemblage, layered double hydroxides seem to be of significant relevance for OM accumulation. Over the years, the fraction 1.6–2.2gcm−3 comprised the largest single pool of organic C. Compared with the 1.6–2.2gcm−3 fraction, the >2.2gcm−3 fraction had a much smaller carbon concentrations. The lignin in that fraction showed by far the strongest oxidative alteration of all the fractions. We assume that partly degraded lignin components, not adsorbed to layered double hydroxides, undergo further microbial oxidation until they form complexes with calcite. Consequently, we conclude that in these calcareous soils accumulation of OM is mainly due to the attachment of partly oxidized OM to positively charged clays, resulting in stabilization against further decomposition, thus slowing down turnover. To a minor extent, calcite is also involved in the stabilization of the plant residues.
Preservation of organic matter in marine sediments by inner-sphere interactions with reactive iron

Abstract:Interactions between organic matter and mineral matrices are critical to the preservation of soil and sediment organic matter. In addition to clay minerals, Fe(III) oxides particles have recently been shown to be responsible for the protection and burial of a large fraction of sedimentary organic carbon (OC). Through a combination of synchrotron X-ray techniques and high-resolution images of intact sediment particles, we assessed the mechanism of interaction between OC and iron, as well as the composition of organic matter co-localized with ferric iron. We present scanning transmission x-ray microscopy images at the Fe L3 and C K1 edges showing that the organic matter co-localized with Fe(III) consists primarily of C=C, C=O and C-OH functional groups. Coupling the co-localization results to iron K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy fitting results allowed to quantify the relative contribution of OC-complexed Fe to the total sediment iron and reactive iron pools, showing that 25–62% of total reactive iron is directly associated to OC through inner-sphere complexation in coastal sediments, as much as four times more than in low OC deep sea sediments. Direct inner-sphere complexation between OC and iron oxides (Fe-O-C) is responsible for transferring a large quantity of reduced OC to the sedimentary sink, which could otherwise be oxidized back to CO2.

Nanoscale mechanisms of carboxyl carbon preservation during Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation

Abstract:The persistence of organic carbon (OC) in natural environments is widely attributed to OC associations with minerals such as iron (Fe) minerals. Carboxyl, a critical structure of OC, can form strong complexes with Fe minerals, but it is still largely unknown about the effects of carboxyl groups on the transformation of Fe oxides and the stabilization mechanisms of OC on Fe oxides at nanoscales. In this study, four carboxylic acids with varying numbers of carboxyl groups (2, 3, 4, and 27 carboxyls) and molecular weight (ranging from 100 to 2000 Da) were added during the coprecipitation of Fe oxides and OC. This approach was taken to systematically elucidate the nanoscale distribution and sequestration mechanisms of carboxyl-containing OC on Fe oxides over different aging periods. Results suggested that ferrihydrite transformed quickly into lepidocrocite, goethite, and magnetite with the presence of Fe(II). The transformation rate of lepidocrocite to goethite slowed with increasing carboxyl number in OC molecules for the low molecular weight carboxylic acids (100–300 Da), but the high molecular weight carboxylic acid (∼2000 Da) promoted ferrihydrite transformation into goethite. Meanwhile, the particle sizes of produced magnetite decreased with increasing carboxyl number in OC molecules. During the mineral transformation, the release of OC from Fe oxides to aqueous solution decreased with increasing numbers of carboxyl groups. Spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) coupled with electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) suggested that carboxyl-rich OC promoted the formation of abundant defective or porous structures in goethite, resulting in OC accumulation in the bulk areas of goethite, which provided an effective way to sequester OC. The aggregation of high molecular weight OC containing more carboxyl groups with magnetite nanoparticles also played an important role in the preservation of OC. Furthermore, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) indicated that OC may form bidentate binding with Fe oxides and the binding strength of Fe(III) and OC may change with varying numbers of carboxyl groups. Results in this study provided a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic interactions between OC with different numbers of carboxyl groups and Fe oxides, and shed insights into the nanoscale mechanisms of OC stabilization during Fe oxide transformation process.

Abstract:The biogeochemical cycles of iron and organic carbon (OC) are closely interconnected in terrestrial and aquatic systems. In ocean waters, the concentration of reactive Fe is tightly controlled by soluble organic ligands. In soils, Fe stabilizes OC by forming aggregates that shield OC from degradation. In lake sediments however, the role of Fe in the preservation of OC has not been explored as extensively yet. We investigated Fe-OC interactions in sediment collected from Lake Tantaré, in which two basins are characterized by contrasting redox conditions. These contrasting redox conditions provide an opportunity to assess their importance in the formation of stable Fe-OC complexes. On average, 30.1 ± 6.4 % of total OC was liberated upon reductively dissolving reactive iron. The Fe-associated and the non-Fe-associated OC pools were characterized at the elemental (OC, TN), isotopic (δ 13 C, δ 15 N) and functional group (FTIR) levels. Large differences in OC:Fe and TN:Fe ratios between the two basins were found which were not linked to OM chemical composition but rather to differences in reactive iron concentrations stemming from the higher abundance of iron sulfides in the anoxic basin. Nevertheless, since the affinity of OM for iron sulfides is lower than that for iron hydroxides, using OC:Fe and TN:Fe ratios as a diagnostic tool for the type of OM-Fe interactions should be done with care in anoxic environment. Same caution should be considered for oxic sediments due to the variation of the proportion of iron hydroxides associated with OM from sample to sample.

Abstract:The behavior of iron (Fe)-bound organic carbon (OC) under anoxic conditions in natural soils and sediments represents a critical knowledge gap for understanding the biogeochemical cycles of OC and Fe. In this study, we investigated the dynamics of Fe and OC in four forest soils in the presence of the dissimilatory Fe-reducing bacterium, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Over an 8-day reduction period, 3.8–9.9% of total OC was released to solution in conjunction with the reduction of 12.5–37.7% of reactive Fe. The fraction of OC released was correlated with the fraction of Fe reduced, indicating that the reductive release was the controlling factor for the mobilization of OC upon the anaerobic microbial reaction. During the reduction, the fractions of poorly crystalline Fe oxides decreased, coupling with an increase in the relative abundance of crystalline Fe oxides. Lability of OC (as reflected by water-extractable OC content) increased after microbial reduction, indicating the decreased stability of OC because of changes in mineral-OC interactions and the conformation of mineral-OC complexes. The reduction of Fe was closely related to bulk soil electron accepting capacity (0.15–0.34mmole−/mol C). Our findings demonstrate that the redox reactions of Fe, modified by the redox reactivity of OC, play an important role in regulating the stability and transformation of OC.
Synergistic relationships between the age of soil organic matter, Fe speciation, and aggregate stability in an arable Luvisol

Abstract:Background Knowledge of soil aggregate formation and stability is essential, as this is important for maintaining soil functions. Aims This study aimed to investigate the influence of organic matter (OM), the content of pedogenic iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides, and aggregate size on the stability of aggregates in arable soil. Methods To this end, the Ap and Bt horizons of a Luvisol were sampled after 14 years of bare fallow, and the results were compared with a control field that had been permanently cropped. Results In the Ap horizon, bare fallow decreased the median diameter of the 53–250 μm size fraction by 26%. Simultaneously, the mass of the 20–53 μm size fraction increased by 65%, indicating reduced stability—particularly of larger soil microaggregates—due to the lack of input of fresh OM. The range of 14carbon (14C) fraction of modern C (F14C) under bare fallow was between 0.50 and 0.90, and thus lower than the cropped site (F14C between 0.75 and 1.01), which is particularly pronounced in the smallest size fraction, indicating the presence of older C. This higher stability and the reduced C turnover in <20 μm aggregates is probably also due to having the highest content of poorly crystalline Fe (oxy)hydroxides, compared to the other size fractions, which act as a cementing agent. Colloid transport from the Ap to the Bt horizon was observed under bare fallow treatment. Conclusions The lack of input of OM decreased the stability of microaggregates and led to a release of mobile colloids, the transport of which can initiate elemental fluxes with as‐yet unknown environmental consequences.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To compare upper airway pressures in snorers and nonsnorers during sleep and wakefulness. DESIGN Case series of snorers and nonsnoring controls. SETTING Sleep clinic of a university hospital. METHODS We used open catheters to measure differential nasopharyngeal and hypopharyngeal pressures in 8 nonapneic snorers with excessive daytime tiredness and 10 healthy nonsnoring controls. Measurements were performed during sleep (with the mouth taped to ensure exclusively nasal breathing) and wakefulness. When awake, the subjects were either seated (with the head neutral, flexed, extended, or rotated) or recumbent (dorsal and lateral positions). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Comparison of pressures within the group as a function of body position and between the groups as a function of snoring. RESULTS Differential nasal and pharyngeal pressures were similar in seated snorers and nonsnorers independently of head position. Assumption of recumbency resulted in significantly increased pharyngeal pressures in nonsnorers (26 +/- 18 Pa seated vs. 52 +/- 46 Pa recumbent, p < .05) and snorers (50 +/- 35 Pa seated vs. 93 +/- 38 recumbent, p < .01). The increase was higher in snorers than nonsnorers. During snoring, sleep differential pharyngeal pressures in snorers were markedly increased compared to quiet sleep (567 +/- 450 Pa during snoring epochs vs. 117 +/- 82 Pa during nonsnoring epochs, p < .01). CONCLUSIONS Compared to nonsnorers, recumbent nonapneic snorers have elevated differential pharyngeal pressures indicative of increased upper airway resistance and reduced airway patency; this is present during wakefulness and sleep.

Abstract:PurposeComplexes of organic matter (OM) with iron (Fe) oxyhydroxides (OM-Fe) prevent/reduce microbial degradation and enhance its stabilization in soils and sediments. Missing in most studies regarding the quality of OM-Fe complexes is in this study addressed by optical method characterization using absorbance and fluorescence, which is a unique approach in combination with sequential extraction methods. This study finds the quality of OM which promotes the stability of the OM-Fe aggregates with respect to the rate of redox dissolution of Fe mineral phases.MethodsSediment samples from a mesotrophic freshwater reservoir were sequentially extracted to distinguish Fe oxyhydroxides solubility at different dissolution times. This allowed us to assess the OM-Fe association with easily reducible Fe-bearing minerals vs. more stable yet reducible fractions. The quality of the sequentially extracted DOM associated with different redox reactivity mineral phases was evaluated by UV–Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy using a parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) model.ResultsHumic-like substances render soluble and labile OM-Fe associations, while non-humic substances enhance the stability of such associations under reducing conditions. In anoxic sediments, non-humic substances are stabilized in the OM-Fe associations.ConclusionThis study described the fate of OM-Fe in anoxic sediments by coupling sequential extractions with UV–Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy characterization. This is a new reliable and simple approach for evaluating the stability of OM-Fe aggregates in sediments, soils, and/or wastewater treatment sludge.

Abstract:Biological and chemical stabilization of organic C was assessed in soils sampled from the long-term experiments at Rothamsted (UK), representing a wide range of carbon inputs and managements by extracting labile, non-humified organic matter (NH) and humic substances (HS). Four sequentially extracted humic substances fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) were extracted and characterized before and after a 215-day laboratory incubation at 25 degrees C from two arable soils, a woodland soil and all occasionally stubbed soil. The fractions corresponded to biochemically stabilised SOM extracted in 0.5 M NaOH (free fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA)) and chemically plus biochemically stabilised SOM extracted from the residue with 0.1 M Na4P2O7 Plus 0.1 M NaOH (bound FA and HA). Our aim was to investigate the effects of chemical and biochemical stabilization on carbon sequestration. The non-humic to humic (NH/H) C ratio separated the soils into two distinct groups: arable soils (unless fertilised with farmyard manure) had an NH/H C ratio between 1.05 and 0.71, about twice that of the other soils (0.51-0.26). During incubation a slow, but detectable, decrease in the NH/H C ratio occurred in soils of C input equivalent or lower to 4 Mg ha(-1) y(-1), whereas the ratio remained practically constant in the other soils. Before incubation the free to bound humic C ratio increased linearly (R-2 = 0.91) with C inputs in the soils from the Broadbalk experiment and decreased during incubation, showing that biochemical stabilization is less effective than chemical stabilization in preserving humic C. Changes in delta C-13 and delta N-15 after incubation were confined to the free FA fractions. The delta C-13 of free FA increased by 1.48 and 0.80 parts per thousand, respectively, in the stubbed and woodland soils, indicating a progressive biological transformation. On the contrary, a decrease was observed for the bound FA of both soils. Concomitantly, a Delta delta N-15 of up to +3.52 parts per thousand was measured after incubation in the free FA fraction and a -2.58 Delta delta N-15 in the bound FA. These changes, which occurred during soil incubation in the absence of C inputs, indicate that free FA fractions were utilised by soil microorganisms, and bound FA were decomposed and replaced, in part, by newly synthesized FA.The (13)CPMAS-TOSS NMR spectra of free HA extracted before and after 215 days of incubation were mostly unchanged. Electrochemical Analysis of Changes in Iron Oxide Reducibility during Abiotic Ferrihydrite Transformation into Goethite and Magnetite.

Abstract:Electron transfer to ferric iron in (oxyhydr-)oxides (hereafter iron oxides) is a critical step in many processes that are central to the biogeochemical cycling of elements and to pollutant dynamics. Understanding these processes requires analytical approaches that allow for characterizing the reactivity of iron oxides toward reduction under controlled thermodynamic boundary conditions. Here, we used mediated electrochemical reduction (MER) to follow changes in iron oxide reduction extents and rates during abiotic ferrous iron-induced transformation of six-line ferrihydrite. Transformation experiments (10 mM ferrihydrite-FeIII) were conducted over a range of solution conditions (pHtrans = 6.50 to 7.50 at 5 mM Fe2+ and for pHtrans = 7.00 also at 1 mM Fe2+) that resulted in the transformation of ferrihydrite into thermodynamically more stable goethite or magnetite. The changes in iron oxide mineralogy during the transformations were quantified using X-ray diffraction analysis. MER measurements on iron oxide suspension aliquots collected during the transformations were performed over a range of pHMER at constant applied reduction potential. The extents and rates of iron oxide reduction in MER decreased with decreasing reaction driving force resulting from both increasing pHMER and increasing transformation of ferrihydrite into thermodynamically more stable iron oxides. We show that the decreases in iron oxide reduction extents and rates during ferrihydrite transformations can be linked to the concurrent changes in iron oxide mineralogy.

Abstract:The interactions of organic carbon (OC) with ferric iron (Fe) oxides play an important role in OC stabilization, but reductive dissolution of Fe(III) oxides under anoxic conditions potentially compromises the stabilization of Fe-bound OC (Fe-OC). Up to date, there are very limited studies on the fate of Fe-OC in sulfidic conditions commonly encountered in OC-rich marine sediments. Herein, multi-pronged studies were implemented to quantitatively characterize the capacity of metastable iron sulfide (FeS) to sequester OC extracted from marine sediments and to unravel the fate of ferrihydrite-bound OC complexes (Fh-OCs) when exposed to dissolved sulfide. Results show that, for a given mechanism of OC association (adsorption or coprecipitation), FeS has DOC retention capacity generally comparable to Fh, implying that the metastable phase could serve as an important OC sink in anoxic marine sediments. During reduction of Fh-OCs by dissolved sulfide, Fh reduction was progressively retarded with increasing OC pre-adsorption, while Fh reduction was promoted after DOC pre-coprecipitation. Despite high extents of Fe reduction by dissolved sulfide, OC release from Fh-OC coprecipitates was low due to efficient re-sequestration of released DOC by coprecipitation with FeS, and an increase in OC pre-loading could facilitate Fe2+ sulfidization and thus re-sequestration of released DOC by FeS. When Fh-OC adsorption complexes were exposed to dissolved sulfide, substantial OC release was restricted to the complexes with lower OC pre-adsorption (C/Fe ≤ 1.5). Overall, reactive Fe reduction by dissolved sulfide may not lead to substantial release of associated OC as long as reduced Fe could be sulfidized to efficiently re-sequester concomitantly released DOC. Results of carbon-1 s near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy indicate that, upon reduction of Fh-OCs by dissolved sulfide and subsequent FeS formation, carboxyl-C was selectively released into the solution but aromatic-C selectively remained on the solid matrixes after Fe reduction, suggesting that OC sink switching from Fe oxides to Fe sulfides could result in molecular fractionations of porewater DOC to some extent, with potential implications for OC biogeochemical cycling.

Abstract:Iron oxides play a critical role in promoting organic carbon sequestration through adsorption or co-precipitation. However, the effects of iron oxide types on the stabilization of aggregate-associated organic carbon are still poorly understood. We investigated the distribution of crystalline iron oxides (Fec), amorphous iron oxides (Feo), delta 13C and Fe-bound OC in soil aggregate fractions of red earth (Ferrisol). The results showed that the delta 13C values in microaggregate and silt+clay fractions were significantly lower than macro-and mesoaggregate (p < 0.05). The contents of Feo and Fe-bound OC in the microaggregate and silt+clay fractions were significantly higher than macro-and masoaggregate fractions (p < 0.05), while the content of Fec increased with the increase of aggregate size. The OC: Fe molar ratio of Feo was higher than Fec in all aggregate fractions. The FTIR spec-troscopy analyses showed that polysaccharides had the highest proportion of all OC functional groups and increased with the increase of aggregate size. Likewise, the ratio of aromatic-C/aliphatic-C increased with the increase of aggregate size. Both Feo and Fe-bound OC had a significant negative correlation with delta 13C values in microaggregate and silt+clay fractions, while Fec had no significant correlation with delta 13C values in all aggregate fractions. Furthermore, the Fe-bound OC and fFe-bound OC were positively correlated with Feo and negatively correlated with Fec in all aggregate fractions. This study highlighted the importance of Feo in the sequestration of aggregate-associated organic carbon and confirmed the hypothesis that the SOC in microaggregates and silt+clay underwent less cycles of microbial utilization due to the protection of Feo, thereby limiting the mo-lecular structure complexity and aromaticity of SOM.
Organic carbon characteristics in density fractions of soils with contrasting mineralogies

Abstract:This study was aimed to evaluate the role of minerals in the preservation of organic carbon (OC) in different soil types. Sequential density fractionation was done to isolate particulate organic matter (POM, <1.8gcm−3) and mineral associated OM (MOM: 1.8–2.2, 2.2–2.6 and >2.6gcm−3) from four soils, i.e., a Ferralsol, a Luvisol, a Vertisol and a Solonetz. Organic matter (OM) in the density fractions was characterised using diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy in the original states (i.e., without any chemical pre-treatment), and after 6% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 10% hydrofluoric acid (HF) treatments. The NaOCl oxidation resistant fraction was considered asa relatively stable pool of OC and the HF soluble fraction was presumed as the mineral bound OC. Phyllosilicate-dominated soils, i.e., Vertisol, Luvisol and Solonetz, contained a greater proportion of POM than Fe and Al oxide-dominated Ferralsol. Wider C:N ratio and lower δ13C and δ15N in POM suggest the dominance of labile OC in this fraction and this was also supported by a greater proportion of NaOCl oxidised OC in the same fraction that was enriched with aliphatic C. The sequential density fractionation method effectively isolated OM into three distinct groups in the soils: (i) OM associated with Fe and Al oxides (>1.8gcm−3 in the Ferralsol); (ii) OM associated with phyllosilicates (1.8–2.6gcm−3) and (iii) OM associated with quartz and feldspar (>2.6gcm−3) in the other three soils. Greater oxidation resistance, and more dissolution of OC during the HF treatment in the Fe and Al oxides dominated fractions suggest a greater potential of these minerals to protect OC from oxidative degradation as compared to the phyllosilicates, and quartz and feldspar matrices. OM associated with Fe and Al oxides was predominantly aromatic and carboxylate C. Decreased C:N ratio in the NaOCl oxidation resistant OM and HF soluble OM of phyllosilicates, and quartz and feldspars dominant fractions compared to their untreated fractions indicate a preferred retention of N rich organic compounds by these minerals. OM associated with phyllosilicates was enriched with protonated amide N and aromatic C. Quartz and feldspars associated OM comprised of N containing organic compounds and polysaccharides, although we don’t expect any role of these minerals in their preservation. Our results imply that the abundance and surface properties of minerals in the soil largely control the dynamics of OC and subsequently protect OC from microbial cycling.

Abstract:The iron (Fe) phases have been widely proposed to preserve organic carbon (OC) via adsorption or coprecipitation pathways, however, such role of Fe phases might be largely reversed under redox-fluctuation conditions, especially for Fe(II) minerals-protected OC. In this study, we synthesized the Fe(II)-OC associations via adsorption and coprecipitation using FeCO3 and three types of low-molecular-weight organic compounds (LMWOCs) at different C/Fe molar ratios, and investigated the OC mineralization induced by hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) during oxygenation processes. Abundant center dot OH can be produced upon oxygenation of FeCO3-LMWOCs associations within 96 h, giving values of 28.49-151.36 mu M in adsorption and 12.63-76.41 mu M in coprecipitation treatments depended on types of LMWOCs and C/Fe molar ratios. Fe(II) species in coprecipitates with hydroquinone (HQ) mainly transformed into Goethite-like phases after oxygenation, while adsorption samples induced more formation of lower-crystalline Fe phase (e.g., ferrihydrite). The surface-Fe(II) was the primary electron donors to O-2, which further induced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) formation via one-and two-electron transfer pathways. Finally, the produced center dot OH removed 0.55-9.65 and 0.16-85.54 mg L-1 total OC in adsorption and coprecipitation treatments after oxygenation. Collectively, this study highlights that OC associated with Fe(II) minerals might be labile due to the oxidation of formed center dot OH, and the role of Fe phases in OC sequestration may be further reevaluated under redox fluctuation conditions.
