Abstract:The mechanism of Ru(II)-catalyzed gem-hydrogenation of 1,3-enynes was studied with the aid of DFT calculations. The origins of cyclization selectivity involved in the two Ru(II)-catalyzed hydrogenative cyclization reactions, where Reaction 1 bears a –OMe group and Reaction 2 bears a –OSiMe3 group, were shed light on explicitly. For reaction 1 ,the thermodynamically unfavorable chair-to-boat isomerization is found to be involved in the process of forming the five-membered carbocycle product (P′), thus leading to the formation of the five-membered heterocycle product (P) preferred. In contrast, for reaction 2, the low electronegativity of silicon atom in –OSiMe3 enables the proton transfer from methyl to the carbene atom more difficult in forming the six-membered heterocycle product (P1′), thus leading to the five-membered carbocycle product (P1) preferred. Additionally, the influence of a series of heteroatoms on cyclization selectivity was predicted theoretically (Reaction 1 with –XMe (X = O, S, Se and Te) and Reaction 2 with –OYMe3 (X = C, Si, Ge and Sn).
