Abstract:A simple and cost-effective fabrication method of gold nanorods (AuNRs) nanoparticles hybridized with polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel (AuNR/PVA) for SERS substrate is described. The AuNR/PVA achieves the control of inter-particle nanogap by modulating the density of gold nanorods, and inter-particle nanogap by the spatial deformation of the hydrogel, and the reduction of the gap between the AuNRs deposited on hydrogel makes the SERS enhancement. In addition, the AuNR/PVA substrate maintains high SERS activity after more than 100 cycles of bending and storage in air for 30 days, and the substrate possesses high sensitivity and high reproducibility. Combining a flexible and transparent surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate for in situ detection with a small portable Raman can be applied to scenarios such as environmental detection and hazardous materials detection. The substrate showed excellent SERS activity against malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV) with limits of detection of 1.18 × 10-13 M and 7.17 × 10-12 M, respectively. The usability of the proposed SERS substrate was demonstrated by detecting the above contaminants in aquatic water. This work not only utilizes a cost-effective method for mass production but also provides a reliable and convenient platform for the preparation of other noble metal flexible substrates.

Abstract:The detection of molecules from highly diluted solutions with a limited amount is vital for precancer diagnosis, food safety, and forensic analysis. The sensitivity and convenience of detection techniques are the primary concerns. In this study, a hybrid superhydrophobic/-philic (SH/SHL) microporous platform is designed and fabricated by a femtosecond laser to improve surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performances. Relying on the micropores fabricated at the center of SHL patterns, sediments distributed at the central regions are avoided, leading to the further enrichment of the target molecules. The engineered micropores with high identification further improve the speed of Raman tests, and the fabricated SERS substrate shows an advantage in outdoor handheld detection and automated inspection applications. The optimized SERS sensor is sufficient for attomolar-level detection (10-17 M) of rhodamine 6G using analyte volumes of just 5 μL, corresponding to an enhancement factor of 5.19 × 1013. Meanwhile, a relative standard deviation of 7.48% at 10-10 M shows the excellent uniformity of this proposed SERS platform. This work further pushes forward the practical applications of SERS technology in ultratrace molecular detections.

Abstract:Broadband surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates can achieve strong SERS enhancement at multiple excitation wavelengths, which is highly desirable in diverse fields. Here, a facile and reliable interfacial layer-by-layer self-assembly technique was proposed to construct broadband and sensitive nanorod (NR) monolayer film over nanosphere (MFON) substrate. The NR MFON substrate with ultra-broad spectrum from visible to near-infrared region was achieved by varying the shape of plasmonic nanoparticles, which exhibits excellent SERS activity at different excitation wavelengths. Besides, the size of NRs and polystyrene spheres, and the layer numbers of NR film were altered to optimize the sensitivity of SERS substrates. Notably, the SERS intensity of the optimally designed NR MFON substrate is 25-fold larger than that of NR monolayer film deposition on the plane Si wafer. Furthermore, the optimal NR MFON substrate presents excellent reproducibility and a much wider quantitative detection range, which enables a wide-linear-range analysis of thiram in grape juice by a portable Raman spectrometer. Therefore, we envision that this study opens a new avenue toward the design of ultra-sensitive and broadband SERS platforms with widespread applications.

Abstract:Various flexible SERS sensors have attracted widespread concern in performing the direct identification of the analytes adsorbed on arbitrary surfaces. Here, a sample method was proposed to integrate plasmonic nanoparticles into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to fabricate flexible substrate for the decoration of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The flexible SERS sensor based on AgNPs/AgNPs-PDMS offers highly sensitive Raman detection with enhancement factor up to 8.3 × 109, which can be attributed to the integrative effects from both the increase of the light absorption of the embedded AgNPs in PDMS substrate and the EM enhancement from the adjacent top-top, bottom-bottom and top-bottom AgNPs. After undergoing the cyclic mechanical deformation, the SERS substrate still maintains high mechanical stability and stable SERS signals. However, upon stretching the flexible substrate, there was an amusing phenomenon that SERS signals can be highly increased, which results from that the reduction of lateral nanogaps between top and bottom of the PDMS boundary strengthens the trigger of the plasmon coupling as demonstrated by the simulated result. This result reveals that the tuning and the coupling of the electromagnetic fields can be effectively controlled by the macroscopic mechanical solicitation. That will have an important significance for practical applications in strain-dependent sensors and detectors.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) microfluidic system, which enables rapid detection of chemical and biological analytes, offers an effective platform to monitor various food contaminants and disease diagnoses. The efficacy of SERS microfluidic systems is greatly dependent on the sensitivity and reusability of SERS detection substrates to ensure repeated use for prolonged periods. This study proposed a novel process of femtosecond laser nanoparticle array (NPA) implantation to achieve homogeneous forward transfer of gold NPA on a flexible polymer film and accurately integrated it within microfluidic chips for SERS detection. The implanted Au-NPA strips show a remarkable electromagnetic field enhancement with the factor of 9×10 8 during SERS detection of malachite green (MG) solution, achieving a detection limit lower than 10 ppt, far better than most laser-prepared SERS substrates. Furthermore, Au-NPA strips show excellent reusability after several physical and chemical cleaning, because of the robust embedment of laser-implanted NPA in flexible substrates. To demonstrate the performance of Au-NPA, a SERS microfluidic system is built to monitor the online oxidation reaction between MG/NaClO reactants, which helps infer the reaction path. The proposed method of nanoparticle implantation is more effective than the direct laser structuring technique. It provides better performance for SERS detection, robustness of detection, and substrate flexibility and has a wider range of applications for microfluidic systems without any negative impact.

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a technique that utilizes the surface electric field of metal nanostructures to amplify Raman signals and promote the analysis and detection of trace molecules. In order to harness the potential of flexible SERS substrates, this work proposes a simple and cost-effective method for preparing a large-area (circular, 7.5 cm in diameter, with a 38 cm(2) area) three-dimensional (3D) flexible SERS substrate. We first prepared a bowl-shaped nanoarray of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by utilizing a polystyrene microsphere (PS) as sacrificial templates and then loaded a monolayer of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on it, finally a high-strength 3D AuNPs/PDMS flexible SERS substrate is obtained successfully. There are two key steps here, which are using plasma etching to regulate the gap between PS spheres and using the thermal demolding method to facilitate the separation of PS and PDMS. The ultralarge area AuNPs/PDMS substrate exhibits high SERS detection sensitivity and good uniformity. The SERS substrate possesses the advantage of multifunctional detection. The proposed substrate demonstrated detections of up to 10(-9), 10(-7), and 10(-8) M concentrations of rhodamine 6G (R6G), vitamin C, and thiram molecules, respectively. The detection results meet international standards. Electromagnetic simulations using the finite difference time domain reveal that the SERS enhancement originates from the surface plasmon resonance and coupling effects of AuNPs. This large-area 3D flexible SERS substrate not only enhances detection efficiency by enabling the detection of a greater number of samples or sample regions but also provides a new approach for detecting vitamin C and pesticide residues. It may also be used in electronic skin sensors, in situ pesticide residue detection, on-scene evidence collection in criminal investigations, and so on.

Abstract:A flexible and transparent film assembled from the cross-nanoporous structures of Au on PET (CNS of Au@PET) is developed as a versatile and effective SERS substrate for rapid, on-site trace analysis with high sensitivity. The fabrication of the CNS of Au can be achieved on a large scale at low cost by employing an etching process with super-aligned carbon nanotubes as a mask, followed by metal deposition. A strongly enhanced Raman signal with good uniformity can be obtained, which is attributed to the excitation of "hot spots" around the metal nanogaps and sharp edges. Using the CNS of Au@PET film as a SERS platform, real-time and on-site SERS detection of the food contaminant crystal violet (CV) is achieved, with a detection limit of CV solution on a tomato skin of 10-7 M. Owing to its ability to efficiently extract trace analytes, the resulting substrate also achieves detection of 4-ATP contaminants and thiram pesticides by swabbing the skin of an apple. A SERS detection signal for 4-ATP has a relative standard deviation of less than 10%, revealing the excellent reproducibility of the substrate. The flexible, transparent and highly sensitive substrates fabricated using this simple and cost-effective strategy are promising for practical application in rapid, on-site SERS-based detection.

Abstract:We synthesize a high-efficiency substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements, which is composed of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on two-dimensional silicate nanoplatelets acting as an inorganic stabilizer, via the in-situ reduction of hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (III) by sodium citrate in an aqueous solution. Silicate platelets of ~1-nm thickness and various sizes, viz. laponite (50 nm), sodium montmorillonite (Na+–MMT, 100 nm), and mica (500 nm), are used to stabilize the AuNPs (Au@silicate), which are formed with uniform diameters ranging between 25 and 30 nm as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In particular, the laponite SERS substrate can be used in biological, environmental, and food safety applications to measure small molecules such as DNA (adenine molecule), dye (Direct Blue), and herbicide (paraquat) as it shows high detection sensitivity with a detection limit of 10−9 M for adenine detection. These highly sensitive SERS substrates, with their three-dimensional hot-junctions formed with AuNPs and two-dimensional silicate nanoplatelets, allow the highly efficient detection of organic molecules. Therefore, these Au@silicate nanohybrid substrates have great potential in biosensor technology because of their environmentally-friendly and simple fabrication process, high efficiency, and the possibility of rapid detection.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has proven to be promising for the detection of trace analytes; however, the precise nanofabrication of a specific and sensitive plasmonic SERS-active substrate is still a major challenge that limits the scope of its applications. In this work, gold nanoparticles are self-assembled into densely packed two-dimensional arrays at a liquid/liquid interface between dimethyl carbonate and water in the absence of template controller molecules. Both the simulation and experiment results show that the particles within these film-like arrays exhibit strong electromagnetic coupling and enable large amplification of Raman signals. In order to realize the level of sensing specificity, the surface chemistry of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) is rationally tailored by incorporating an appropriate chemical moiety that specifically captures molecules of interest. The ease of fabrication and good uniformity make this platform ideal for in situ SERS sensing of trace targets in complex samples.

Abstract:Developing ideal surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates is significant in biological detection. Compared with free non-aggregated noble metal nanoparticles, loading metal nanoparticles on a large matrix can achieve a higher SERS effect due to the existence of many “hot spots”. A novel SERS substrate with intense “hot spots” was prepared through reducing gold ions with silicon nanocrystal containing polymer microspheres. The substrate exhibits high SERS sensitivity with an enhancement factor of 5.4 × 107. By applying 4-mercaptopyridine as a Raman reporter, the developed SERS substrate can realize measurement of pH values. The intensity ratio of 1574 to 1607 cm−1 of 4-mercaptopyridine showed excellent pH sensitivity, which increased as the surrounding pH increased. With good stability and reliability, the pH sensor is promising in the design of biological detection devices.

Abstract:A facile, scalable fabrication strategy for developing an ultrasensitive surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection platform that serves as a rapid, label‐free point of care diagnostics device. Highly dense Au nanopearl arrays with narrow gap distances are formed directly through thermal evaporation on hydrophobic cellulose fibers to achieve excellent portable SERS performance (enhancement factor: 3.9 x 1011; detection limit: sub‐femtomolar [single molecule level]; reproductivity [relative standard deviation ≤ 4%]). Surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)‐based biosensors have attracted much attention for their label‐free detection, ultrahigh sensitivity, and unique molecular fingerprinting. In this study, a wafer‐scale, ultrasensitive, highly uniform, paper‐based, portable SERS detection platform featuring abundant and dense gold nanopearls with narrow gap distances, are prepared and deposited directly onto ultralow‐surface‐energy fluorosilane‐modified cellulose fibers through simple thermal evaporation by delicately manipulating the atom diffusion behavior. The as‐designed paper‐based SERS substrate exhibits an extremely high Raman enhancement factor (3.9 × 1011), detectability at sub‐femtomolar concentrations (single‐molecule level) and great signal reproductivity (relative standard deviation: 3.97%), even when operated with a portable 785‐nm Raman spectrometer. This system is used for fingerprinting identification of 12 diverse analytes, including clinical medicines (cefazolin, chloramphenicol, levetiracetam, nicotine), pesticides (thiram, paraquat, carbaryl, chlorpyrifos), environmental carcinogens (benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[g,h,i]perylene), and illegal drugs (methamphetamine, mephedrone). The lowest detection concentrations reach the sub‐ppb level, highlighted by a low of 16.2 ppq for nicotine. This system appears suitable for clinical applications in, for example, i) therapeutic drug monitoring for individualized medication adjustment and ii) ultra‐early diagnosis for pesticide intoxication. Accordingly, such scalable, portable and ultrasensitive fibrous SERS substrates open up new opportunities for practical on‐site detection in biofluid analysis, point‐of‐care diagnostics and precision medicine.

Abstract:In the realm of molecular detection, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique has garnered increasing attention due to its rapid detection, high sensitivity, and non-destructive characteristics. However, conventional rigid SERS substrates are either costly to fabricate and challenging to prepare over a large area, or they exhibit poor uniformity and repeatability, making them unsuitable for inspecting curved object surfaces. In this work, we present a flexible SERS substrate with high sensitivity as well as good uniformity and repeatability. First, the flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate is manually formulated and cured. SiO2/Ag layer on the substrate can be obtained in a single process by using ion beam sputtering. Then, reactive ion etching is used to etch the upper SiO2layer of the film, which directly leads to the desired densely packed nanostructure. Finally, a layer of precious metal is deposited on the densely packed nanostructure by thermal evaporation. In our proposed system, the densely packed nanostructure obtained by etching the SiO2layer directly determines the SERS ability of the substrate. The bottom layer of silver mirror can reflect the penetrative incident light, the spacer layer of SiO2and the top layer of silver thin film can further localize the light in the system, which can realize the excellent absorption of Raman laser light, thus enhancing SERS ability. In the tests, the prepared substrates show excellent SERS performance in detecting crystalline violet with a detection limit of 10-11M. The development of this SERS substrate is anticipated to offer a highly effective and convenient method for molecular substance detection.
Evaporation-induced self-assembly of silver nanospheres and gold nanorods on a super-hydrophobic substrate for SERS applications

Abstract:Abstract Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has drawn attention for broad applications. We successfully fabricated highly effective SERS structures via evaporation-induced self-assembly of blend nanoparticles containing sliver nanospheres (Ag NSs) and gold nanorods (Au NRs) on a super-hydrophobic (SH) substrate. On the SH substrate, the droplets of the mixed aqueous solution of silver nanospheres (Ag NSs), gold nanorods (Au NRs), and probe molecules can preserve their spherical shape during the evaporation process, and the probe molecules (R6G) are confined into extremely small areas after solvent removal due to hydrophobicity-enhanced concentration effects. The Raman enhancement effect of the blend nanoparticles with 40 vol% Ag NSs is far higher than that of the other samples. The structure of the aggregated Ag NSs on the film-like Au NRs greatly enhances the SERS effect of Ag NSs, which is optimal for the blend system with 40 vol% Ag NSs. The SERS structure also displays excellent signal reproducibility (RSD < 10%) and low detection limits (0.5 nM). Thus, this work offers a simple and efficient strategy to fabricate a highly effective SERS structure with broad applications in environmental science, analytical chemistry, etc.

Abstract:Large-area gold and silver nanoparticles inside periodical silicon microhole arrays were prepared via simple electrodeposition. Such metal nanoparticles within Si microholes showed a strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect, which enabled the detection of rhodamine at 10(-8) M and 10(-9) M on substrates of AuNPs and AgNPs, respectively. The SERS activity of the substrates depended on the metal particle morphology. Microfabrication combined with electrodeposition appears to be a viable approach for preparing reproducible SERS Substrates for sensitive Raman detection.
Wafer-Level Highly Dense Metallic Nanopillar-Enabled High-Performance SERS Substrates for Molecular Detection

Abstract:Seeking sensitive, large-scale, and low-cost substrates is highly important for practical applications of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology. Noble metallic plasmonic nanostructures with dense hot spots are considered an effective construction to enable sensitive, uniform, and stable SERS performance and thus have attracted wide attention in recent years. In this work, we reported a simple fabrication method to achieve wafer-scale ultradense tilted and staggered plasmonic metallic nanopillars filled with numerous nanogaps (hot spots). By adjusting the etching time of the PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) layer, the optimal SERS substrate with the densest metallic nanopillars was obtained, which possessed a detection limit down to 10-13 M by using crystal violet as the detected molecules and exhibited excellent reproducibility and long-term stability. Furthermore, the proposed fabrication approach was further used to prepare flexible substrates; for example, a SERS flexible substrate was proven to be an ideal platform for analyzing low-concentration pesticide residues on curved fruit surfaces with significantly enhanced sensitivity. This type of SERS substrate possesses potential in real-life applications as low-cost and high-performance sensors.

Abstract:Public attention to the food scandals raises an urgent need to develop effective and reliable methods to detect food contaminants. The current prevailing detections are primarily based upon liquid chromatography, mass spectroscopy, or colorimetric methods, which usually require sophisticated and time-consuming steps or sample preparation. Herein, we develop a facile strategy to assemble the vertically aligned monolayer of Au nanorods with a nominal 0.8 nm gap distance and demonstrate their applications in the rapid detection of plasticizers and melamine contamination at femtomolar level by surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS). The SERS signals of plasticizers are sensitive down to 0.9 fM concentrations in orange juices. It is the lowest detection limit reported to date, which is 7 orders of magnitude lower than the standard of United States (6 ppb). The highly organized vertical arrays generate the reproducible "SERS-active sites" and can be achieved on arbitrary substrates, ranging from silicon, gallium nitride, glass to flexible poly(ethylene naphthalate) substrates.
