Abstract:This paper focuses on the motion control and path planning of an omni-directional mobile robot.By analyzing the kinematic and dynamic characteristics of the robot,its motion control model is provided.The model is rationally simplified based on the model equation to reduce the computation cost.The optimal trajectory is generated by using Bang-Bang control.The real-time control effect is realized by combining the trajectory planning and control modeling.Experiment demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In the multi-robot coverage control application, a group of ground robots tries to optimize the environment coverage performance. However, most of the existing works consider that the environment is static and the ground robots have large sensing ranges. In this paper, we present a fully distributed, air-assisted coverage control scheme to address the challenge of a time-varying environment and limited sensing range. Firstly, we use aerial robots equipped with low-resolution but high-sensing-range sensors to achieve a weighted Voronoi coverage of the environment. Then the aerial robots utilize their local information to guide the ground robots, equipped with low-sensing-range but high-resolution sensors, to explore the environment to optimize a high-resolution coverage performance. The ground robots adopt a new controller to promptly adapt to environmental changes. Simultaneously, each aerial robot dynamically adjusts its domain to optimize the coverage performance of the ground robots. The convergence of the control scheme is proved and its performance is evaluated through simulations.

Abstract:Autonomous excavators are gradually gaining attention because they can reduce the waste of human resources and improve the efficiency. This study proposed a complete coverage path planning algorithm for autonomous excavators based on the Rotating Calipers Path Planning (RCPP) algorithm, which called the Excavator-Rotating Calipers Path Planning (E-RCPP) algorithm. This study uses boustrophedon cellular decomposition (BCD) to decompose the construction area to obtain the convex and non-convex sub-areas without obstacles, and describes a non-decomposition principle to determine whether to decompose non-convex areas that are difficult to plan. To obtain the optimal path, an adaptive spacing adjustment model which is used to adjust the spacing between parallel paths is designed. To improve the coverage rate at the corner, this study proposed a novel boundary corner turning method. The algorithm's cost function considers the path length, the number of turns, the coverage rate and the overlap rate. The Digital Orthophoto Map (DOM) of the construction area is created by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and cropped into three polygonal areas, the 2D top-views of the them are used for simulation experiments to verify the performance of E-RCPP algorithm, the results show that the E-RCPP algorithm has better performance when applied to the complete coverage path planning for excavator compared with the traditional RCPP algorithm.

Abstract:Coverage path planning is a critical challenge in various domains, including drones, robots, and automation devices. Traditional methods heavily rely on manually crafted heuristic rules, which struggle to adapt to complex environments and task requirements. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning-based algorithm for coverage path planning to achieve automated and intelligent solutions. Three significant contributions are presented. Firstly, curriculum learning is integrated to adjust the training difficulty, facilitating rapid convergence in deep reinforcement learning. Secondly, a coverage heat map is introduced, providing a visual representation of target areas and guiding the convolutional neural network to focus on relevant features, enhancing coverage performance. Lastly, a more reasonable reward function is designed, promoting desirable behavior and facilitating effective exploration and exploitation during learning. Experimental evaluations demonstrate the versatility of the training framework, successfully extending its application to larger and more complex environments. The proposed algorithm is thoroughly tested and exhibits stable and efficient coverage in maps with varying initial positions and random obstacles.

Abstract:The growing technology investment in driverless cars, warehouse automation, human-service robots, and artificial intelligence applications in our daily lives is inspiring. However, the majority of this effort assumes a structured environment, which leaves significant, unsolved problems for autonomous robots operating in unstructured environments. Beginning in 2010, the U.S. Combat Capabilities Development Command, Army Research Laboratory (ARL), funded a 10-year research program, the Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance (RCTA), which brought together scientists and engineers from government, academia, and industry to develop autonomous mobile robot technologies focused on solving the unique research challenges of operating in unstructured environments. While the underlying motivation came from helping soldiers operating in Army-relevant environments, the benefits extend to scenarios ranging from disasters, to planetary exploration, to reducing reliance on extensive prior knowledge in structured environments. Initially, the program focused around four key robotics technology areas: perception, intelligence, human-robot interaction, and dexterous manipulation and unique mobility (DMUM). In the program’s last several years, focus shifted to integrated capabilities, built upon the pillars of success already achieved. This revised, system-oriented approach laid the foundation for many experiments in laboratory, simulation, and field environments. The program concluded with a capstone demonstration that showcased advanced robotic capabilities for the stakeholders. This special issue highlights robotics technology developed during the RCTA program, progress of which was evaluated and documented through research articles, field experiments, and hardware/software system descriptions. The program produced hundreds of published papers describing innovations in multiple, autonomy-related research areas throughout the program. The papers selected for this special issue describe more recent work, and range from individual research advances to lessons learned from conducting system-level field experiments.
