Abstract:Carbon materials co-doped with both metals and non-metallic heteroatoms have been important research hotpots as the catalysts for Heterogeneous Electro-Fenton technology in disposal of refractory organics. However, there is still a lack of in-depth study on the doping with multiple nitrogen sources and their possible synergistic mechanism. In this study, two kinds of nitrogens (urea & ammonium fluoride) and Cu & Fe bimetal co-doped Carbon Felt electrodes (C-CuFe/N) were designed to explore the effect. C-CuFe/N achieved high degradation efficiency to Norfloxacin (97.2 %), low ion leaching and high cycling stability (still 90.3% after ten cycles), better than C-CuFe, C-CuFe/UN and C-CuFe/FN prepared with no or sole nitrogen being involved. From various characterizations, C-CuFe/N presented the largest specific surface area, highest content of Fe(II), most surface oxygen & active sites, and more importantly, stable M-Nx bond, indicating that UN & FN had excellent synergistic effect. From quenching experiments, the dominated reactive oxygen species for C-CuFe, C-CuFe/UN and C-CuFe/FN were radical (•OH and O2●-) while changed to non-radical (1O2) for C-CuFe/N under acidic condition. Besides, C-CuFe/N showed good catalytic performance (97.2% - 92.3%) over wide initial pH values (1.2-11.3), but during the degradation process, all the pH values changed toward neutral, and the oxidation pathway varied from 1O2 -dominated in acidic condition to radical-dominated in neutral or alkaline conditions. Generally, a good synergistic effect was found to be exist between dual nitrogens, which made for the promotion of catalyst's catalytic activity as well as stability, thus providing a good strategy to design catalysts.
