Abstract:Studies of ocean ridge magmatism have been hampered by the difficulty in constructing time-series data over more than a few thousand years. Sediment rapidly covers newly formed ocean crust, and older rocks, even when recovered from fault scarps, cannot be dated accurately. Ridge eruptions, however, disperse pyroclastic glass over distances as far as 5 km, and these glasses have been shown to persist for thousands of years in on-ridge sediment push cores. Here we present data on such glasses from a piston core that impacted basement in much older (600 ka) sediment. The age of deposition was determined using established stratigraphic methods to date the host sediment, yielding an average sample resolution of a few thousand years and a continuous 65 k.y. time series. The new time-series data show systematic temporal variations in magma compositions related to a change to the dynamics of crustal storage, which led to greater extents of pre-eruptive differentiation. Shortly thereafter was a small but discernable shift toward more enriched primary melt compositions. These events coincide with the onset of enhanced crustal production, previously identified using seismic data and interpreted to reflect the capture of a hotspot by the ridge. These results show the long-term preservation of pyroclastic glasses and suggest that the construction of high-resolution volcanic stratigraphy over a million years or more may be possible at ocean ridges, using multiple piston cores that impact basement. Sediment-hosted glasses have the potential to transform ocean ridges from the volcanic setting with the worst time-series data to that with the best.

Abstract:Pressure fluctuations caused by glacially driven variations in sea level may modulate magmatic and hydrothermal output at submarine volcanic centers, with falling sea level driving increased volcanic activity. In turn, glacially paced changes in submarine volcanism could induce globally synchronous variations in the delivery of bioavailable iron and CO2 from mid-ocean ridges and thus provide solid-Earth feedbacks into the climate system. While evaluation of submarine volcanic output on orbital-timescales is technically challenging, near-ridge sediment cores hosting hydrothermal plume precipitates provide continuous, spatially integrated, and datable records to investigate the long-term behavior of hydrothermal systems. Abstract:In basaltic glass from the southern Mid-Atlantic-Ridge conducive environmental conditions for biogenic weathering resulted in excellent preserved microbial morphologies on glass surfaces. The distinct glass interface and open spaces between palagonite sheet and glass indicate a dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism of glass alteration potentially supported by microorganisms. On internal fracture surfaces, branching channels with widths at 20–30 μm containing longish structures with targeted dissolution of the glass by growing tips were observed. Alteration resulted in enrichment of Fe, Ti, P, and K in palagonite in amorphous mineral forms.

Nitrogen Concentrations and Isotopic Compositions of Seafloor-Altered Terrestrial Basaltic Glass: Implications for Astrobiology

Abstract:Observed enrichments of N (and the δ15N of this N) in volcanic glasses altered on Earth's modern and ancient seafloor are relevant in considerations of modern global N subduction fluxes and ancient life on Earth, and similarly altered glasses on Mars and other extraterrestrial bodies could serve as valuable tracers of biogeochemical processes. Palagonitized glasses and whole-rock samples of volcanic rocks on the modern seafloor (ODP Site 1256D) contain 3-18 ppm N with δ15Nair values of up to +4.5‰. Variably altered glasses from Mesozoic ophiolites (Troodos, Cyprus; Stonyford volcanics, USA) contain 2-53 ppm N with δ15N of -6.3 to +7‰. All of the more altered glasses have N concentrations higher than those of fresh volcanic glass (for MORB, <2 ppm N), reflecting significant N enrichment, and most of the altered glasses have δ15N considerably higher than that of their unaltered glass equivalents (for MORB, -5 ± 2‰). Circulation of hydrothermal fluids, in part induced by nearby spreading-center magmatism, could have leached NH4+ from sediments then fixed this NH4+ in altering volcanic glasses. Glasses from each site contain possible textural evidence for microbial activity in the form of microtubules, but any role of microbes in producing the N enrichments and elevated δ15N remains uncertain. Petrographic analysis, and imaging and chemical analyses by scanning electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy, indicate the presence of phyllosilicates (smectite, illite) in both the palagonitized cracks and the microtubules. These phyllosilicates (particularly illite), and possibly also zeolites, are the likely hosts for N in these glasses. Key Words: Nitrogen-Nitrogen isotope-Palagonite-Volcanic glass-Mars. Radiolytic Hydrogen Production in the Subseafloor Basaltic Aquifer

Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) is produced in geological settings by dissociation of water due to radiation from radioactive decay of naturally occurring uranium ((238)U, (235)U), thorium ((232)Th) and potassium ((40)K). To quantify the potential significance of radiolytic H2 as an electron donor for microbes within the South Pacific subseafloor basaltic aquifer, we use radionuclide concentrations of 43 basalt samples from IODP Expedition 329 to calculate radiolytic H2 production rates in basement fractures. The samples are from three sites with very different basement ages and a wide range of alteration types. U, Th, and K concentrations vary by up to an order of magnitude from sample to sample at each site. Comparison of our samples to each other and to the results of previous studies of unaltered East Pacific Rise basalt suggests that significant variations in radionuclide concentrations are due to differences in initial (unaltered basalt) concentrations (which can vary between eruptive events) and post-emplacement alteration. However, there is no clear relationship between alteration type and calculated radiolytic yields. Local maxima in U, Th, and K produce hotspots of H2 production, causing calculated radiolytic rates to differ by up to a factor of 80 from sample to sample. Fracture width also greatly influences H2 production, where microfractures are hotspots for radiolytic H2 production. For example, H2 production rates normalized to water volume are 190 times higher in 1 μm wide fractures than in fractures that are 10 cm wide. To assess the importance of water radiolysis for microbial communities in subseafloor basaltic aquifers, we compare electron transfer rates from radiolysis to rates from iron oxidation in subseafloor basalt. Radiolysis appears likely to be a more important electron donor source than iron oxidation in old (>10 Ma) basement basalt. Radiolytic H2 production in the volume of water adjacent to a square cm of the most radioactive SPG basalt may support as many as 1500 cells.

Abstract:Abstract Mantle serpentinization influences the rheology of altered peridotites and the global fluxes of energy and volatiles, the generation of seafloor and sub-seafloor chemolithotrophic life, and the carbon cycle. As a by-product of serpentinization, molecular hydrogen (H2) is generated, which supports chemosynthetic communities, and this mechanism may have driven the origin of life on early Earth. At continent-ocean transition zones (COTs) of magma-poor rifted margins, the mantle is exposed and hydrated over hundreds of kilometers across the rift, but the H2 fluxes associated with this process are poorly known. Here, we coupled a thermomechanical model with serpentinization reaction equations to estimate associated H2 release during mantle exhumation at COTs. This reproduced a tectonic structure similar to that of the West Iberia margin, one of the best-studied magma-poor margins. We estimated the rate of H2 production from mantle hydration at (7.5 ± 2.5) × 107 mol/(yr × km). By estimating the area of exhumed mantle from wide-angle seismic profiles at North Atlantic magma-poor margins, we calculated that the accumulated H2 production could have been as high as ~4.3 × 1018 mol (~8.6 × 1012 metric tons) prior to opening of the North Atlantic Ocean, at a rate of ~1.4 × 1017 mol/m.y. This is one quarter of the total predicted flux produced by the global system of mid-ocean ridges, thus highlighting the significance of H2 generation at magma-poor margins in global H2 fluxes, to hydrogenothropic microbial life, and, perhaps, as a potential energy source.

Generation and Modification of the Mantle Wedge and Lithosphere beneath the West Bismarck Island Arc: Melting, Metasomatism and Thermal History of Peridotite Xenoliths from Ritter Island

Abstract:Peridotite xenoliths dredged from the seafloor NW of Ritter Island in the West Bismarck island arc offer a rare insight into the petrogenetic processes operating in the upper mantle wedge of an active oceanic subduction zone. Harzburgitic xenoliths and subordinate dunites and pyroxenites display significant textural and compositional variability between samples, which are interpreted as fragments of heterogeneous mantle that has experienced a complex petrogenetic history. Based on textures and in situ major and trace element analyses of olivine, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene, five significant petrogenetic stages have been deduced. The first stage was a period of partial melting at temperatures >1100 °C in a previously active arc (probably the now extinct Vitiaz–West Melanesian arc), indicated by the high Mg# and Cr#, low Al2O3 and very low concentrations of incompatible trace elements in residual phases and the absence of residual clinopyroxene. Modelling the concentrations of Y and Yb in orthopyroxene indicates depletion by high degrees (∼30%) of wet fractional melting of a depleted mantle source. This was followed by metasomatism also related to this previous period of subduction, resulting in refertilization of the harzburgite residues with clinopyroxene and the formation of dunite and pyroxenite channels. Three populations of secondary clinopyroxene are identified based on their trace element compositions, with both light rare earth element (LREE)-depleted and (more unusually) sinusoidal REE patterns identified, indicating that a spectrum of fluid compositions was involved in the metasomatism. The third stage involved a period of cooling and chemical re-equilibration below the wet solidus, combined with decompression to shallow lithospheric mantle depths. Geothermometers with different closure temperatures reveal large temperature discrepancies, indicating that mantle cooling was both unusually extensive (down to ∼600 °C), but also very slow (∼20 °C Ma–1). The fourth stage marked the cessation of cooling and formation of the modern mantle wedge as part of the West Bismarck island arc. Silicate melts percolated through networks of veins and reacted with the residual mantle, generating a variety of new disequilibrium textures, most notably orthopyroxene–clinopyroxene–glass reaction patches. This was accompanied by increases in spinel Cr# and olivine trace element concentrations, and higher mineral–mineral temperatures. These disequilibrium textures were preserved through the final stage of entrainment in the host basalt and rapid transport to the seafloor. The Ritter suite thus provides a remarkably detailed insight into the broad diversity of melt–fluid compositions and fluid–rock reaction processes in oceanic sub-arc mantle. Several of these features can be found both in other samples of sub-arc mantle and also in cratonic mantle, demonstrating the ubiquity of such processes beneath modern arcs and also the potential genetic relationship between subduction-zone processes and the formation of cratons. In this way, sub-arc xenoliths such as the Ritter suite, although at present under-sampled, can provide crucial insights for understanding the relationship between the mechanisms by which modern arc systems are generated and evolve and the nature of the upper mantle once subduction processes have ceased.

Crust-scale reactive porous flow revealed by the brown amphibole in the IODP hole U1473A gabbros, Southwest Indian Ridge

Abstract:Mid-ocean ridge magma reservoirs are mush-dominated systems, where reactive porous flow is a dominant post-cumulus process. However, the length scale of this process is poorly constrained, especially in ultraslow-spreading ridges. Here, we seek to address this question by presenting a comprehensive brown amphibole dataset of gabbros in IODP Hole U1473A drilled on the Atlantis Bank ocean core complex, Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR). The results suggest a magmatic origin of the brown amphiboles. Intra-grain chemical variations and compositional zoning of these amphibole grains suggest they were crystallized in a closed system. Nevertheless, geochemical modelings indicate the remarkable Zr/Nd ratio variations in brown amphibole can only be explained by assimilation-fractional crystallization processes triggered by the reactive porous flow. Thus, the brown amphibole in olivine gabbros was crystallized from trapped melts residual after earlier melt-mush interaction. In this light, the reactive porous flow should have ceased prior to the brown amphibole precipitation. This, in turn, suggests the stratigraphic variations in amphibole trace elements reflect the final-stage reactive melt migration. The stratigraphic variations in amphibole trace elements reflect a major episode of reactive melt migration through an ~800-m section upwardly. This implies that the porosity of the entire gabbroic section remained connected, providing a minimum estimate of the size of the melt-present zones in the lower oceanic crust during the spreading of the 57-60°E magmatic segment of SWIR. Our study reveals that large-scale reactive porous flow can occur in the magmatic segments of ultraslow-spreading ridges, and has important implications for the thermal and rheological evolution of the lower oceanic crust.

Diversity and Metabolic Potentials of Subsurface Crustal Microorganisms from the Western Flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Abstract:Deep-sea oceanic crust constitutes the largest region of the earth's surface. Accumulating evidence suggests that unique microbial communities are supported by iron cycling processes, particularly in the young (<10 million-year old), cool (<25°C) subsurface oceanic crust. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the microbial abundance, diversity, and metabolic potentials in the sediment-buried crust from "North Pond" on western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Three lithologic units along basement Hole U1383C were found, which typically hosted ∼10(4) cells cm(-3) of basaltic rock, with higher cell densities occurring between 115 and 145 m below seafloor. Similar bacterial community structures, which are dominated by Gammaproteobacterial and Sphingobacterial species closely related to iron oxidizers, were detected regardless of variations in sampling depth. The metabolic potentials of the crust microbiota were assayed by metagenomic analysis of two basalt enrichments which showed similar bacterial structure with the original sample. Genes coding for energy metabolism involved in hydrocarbon degradation, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium, denitrification and hydrogen oxidation were identified. Compared with other marine environments, the metagenomes from the basalt-hosted environments were enriched in pathways for Fe(3+) uptake, siderophore synthesis and uptake, and Fe transport, suggesting that iron metabolism is an important energy production and conservation mechanism in this system. Overall, we provide evidence that the North Pond crustal biosphere is dominated by unique bacterial groups with the potential for iron-related biogeochemical cycles.
Submarine volcanism along shallow ridges did not drive Cryogenian cap carbonate formation

Abstract:The termination of Neoproterozoic “Snowball Earth” glaciations is marked globally by laterally extensive neritic cap carbonates directly overlying glacial diamictites. The formation of these unique deposits on deglaciation calls for anomalously high calcium carbonate saturation. A popular mechanism to account for the source of requisite ocean alkalinity is the shallow-ridge hypothesis, in which initial spreading ridges surrounding fragments of Rodinia, assumed to be dominated by volcanic margins, were formed at sea level. The shallow ridges are inferred to have promoted widespread deposition and alteration of glassy hyaloclastite—a source of alkalinity. We test this hypothesis by quantifying the prevalence of shallow ridges along Pangea’s passive continental margins, and by assessing Neoproterozoic reconstructions of continents. We find that the most frequently occurring depth range for incipient mid-ocean ridges is 2.1 ± 0.4 km. Ridges with initial elevations of approximately sea level are rare and have anomalous crustal thicknesses >14 km that only occur proximal to large igneous provinces (LIPs). Hyaloclastite is uncommon on mid-ocean ridges as it is generally restricted to water depths of <200 m for tholeiitic basalts, instead forming mostly on intraplate seamounts. Additionally, ocean drilling recently found hyaloclastite to be insignificant along the outer Vøring Plateau (offshore Norway)—an exemplar of a volcanic margin. Reconstructions of Rodinia and associated LIPs demonstrate that volcanic margins potentially hosting minor hyaloclastites were scarce during the late Neoproterozoic. We conclude that the shallow-ridge hypothesis fails to explain the formation of cap carbonates and suggest that other mechanisms such as enhanced continental weathering may be largely responsible.

Abstract:Hydrothermal fluids in ultramafic‐hosted hydrothermal systems associated with oceanic detachment faults can be more oxidizing compared to mafic‐hosted vent sites. These fluids form a mineral assemblage of pyrite, magnetite and hematite. At 13°30′N on the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge, chlorite‐quartz breccias recovered from an exposed fault scarp contain pyrite, with abundant magnetite and hematite, indicating that the redox of the fluids was variable. In primary micron‐scale zonations in pyrite, Ni, Co, and Se have a decoupled relationship, recording fluctuations in the chemical composition and temperature of hydrothermal fluid as the grains grew. Secondary zonations that erase and overprint primary zonations are limited to the grain margin and permeable regions within the grain core. Secondary zonations formed via two processes: (a) grain dissolution followed by overgrowth, and (b) remobilization of metals during oxidizing fluid flow events. In both instances, Ni and Co have been mobilized and concentrated, and are not lost to the hydrothermal fluid. Superimposed on these features is evidence of grain scale deformation related to periods of fault movement along the detachment surface. Sulfur isotope ratios (δ34S) in pyrite systematically decrease from the grain margin to the grain core, indicating that increased amounts of sulfur were derived from thermochemical sulfate reduction of seawater. Thus, pyrite records the evolution of fluid flow and deformation events during exhumation along the detachment surface from ∼1 to 2 km below the seafloor at the base of the lava pile, with temporal fluctuations in fluid redox identified as an important process in controlling Ni and Co enrichment in pyrite.

Abstract:The oceanic basaltic crust is the largest aquifer on Earth and has the potential to harbor substantial subsurface microbial ecosystems, which hitherto remains largely uncharacterized and is analogous to extraterrestrial subsurface habitats. Within the sediment-buried 3.5 Myr old basaltic crust of the eastern Juan de Fuca Ridge flank, the circulating basement fluids have moderate temperature (∼65 °C) and low to undetectable dissolved oxygen and nitrate concentrations. Sulfate, present in high concentrations, is therefore expected to serve as the major electron acceptor in this subsurface environment. This study focused on the availability and potential sources of two important electron donors, methane (CH4) and hydrogen (H2), for the subseafloor biosphere. High integrity basement fluids were collected via fluid delivery lines associated with Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Circulation Obviation Retrofit Kits (CORKs) that extend from basement depths to outlet ports at the seafloor. Two new CORKs installed during IODP 327 in 2010, 1362A and 1362B, were sampled in 2011 and 2013. The two CORKs are superior than earlier style CORKs in that they are equipped with coated casing and polytetrafluoroethylene fluid delivery lines, reducing the interaction between casing materials with the environment. Additional samples were collected from an earlier style CORK at Borehole 1301A. The basement fluids are enriched in H2 (0.05–1.8 μmol/kg), suggesting that the ocean basaltic aquifer can support H2-driven metabolism. The basement fluids also contain significant amount of CH4 (5–32 μmol/kg), revealing CH4 as an available substrate for subseafloor basaltic habitats. The δ 13C values of CH4 from the three boreholes ranged from −22.5 to − 58 ‰ , while the δ 2H values ranged from −316 to 57‰. The isotopic compositions of CH4 and the molecular compositions of hydrocarbons suggest that CH4 in the basement fluids is of both biogenic and abiotic origins, varying among sites and sampling times. The δ 2H values of CH4 in CORK 1301A fluid samples are much more positive than found in all other marine environments investigated to date and are best explained by the partial microbial oxidation of biogenic CH4. In conclusion, our study shows that CH4 and H2 are persistently available to fuel the deep biosphere and that CH4 is both produced and potentially consumed by microorganisms in the oceanic basement.

Zeolite Parageneses in the North Atlantic Igneous Province: Implications for Geotectonics and Groundwater Quality of Basaltic Crust

Abstract:Zeolites are among the most common products of chemical interaction between groundwaters and the Earth's crust during diagenesis and low-grade metamorphism. The unique crystal structures of zeolites result in large molar volumes, high cation-exchange capacities, and reversible dehydration. These properties influence both the stability and chemistry of zeolites in geologic systems, leading to complex parageneses and compositional relationships that provide sensitive indicators of physicochemical conditions in the crust. Observations of zeolite occurrence in Tertiary basaltic lavas in the North Atlantic region indicate that individual zeolite minerals are distributed in distinct, depth-controlled zones that parallel the paleosurface of the plateau basalts and transgress the lava stratigraphy. The zeolite zones are interpreted to have formed at the end of burial metamorphism of the lavas. Relative timing relations between various mineral parageneses and crustal-scale deformal features indicate that the minerals indicative of the zeolite zones formed within 1 million years after cessation of volcanism. Empirical correlation between the depth distribution of zeolite zones and the temperatures of formation of zeolites in geothermal systems provides estimates of regional thermal gradients and heat flow in flood-basalt provinces. Similarly, the orientations of zeolite zones can be used to distinguish synvolcanic and post-volcanic crustal deformation. Because zeolites that characterize the individual zones display different ion-exchange selectivities for various cations, reactions between groundwaters and zeolites in basaltic aquifers can result in depth-controlled zones where individual elements are concentrated in the crust. This is established for Sr, which is concentrated by at least an order of magnitude in heulandite, resulting in an overall Sr enrichment of lavas in the heulandite-stilbite zeolite zone.

Volcanic Glass as a Proxy for Paleotopography Suggests New Features in Late-Miocene Oregon

Abstract:Volcanic glass has been used extensively as a paleoaltimeter. Deuterium (2H) concentrations in glass have been found to be stable over geologic timescales, making δ2H (also known as δD) a reliable proxy for ancient water chemistry. However, continued work revolves around better understanding how different factors affect preserved water in volcanic ash. Here, we analyze δD in the Rattlesnake Tuff (RST), a widespread ca. 7 Ma ash-flow tuff, and create a paleoisoscape to assess variations in δD across Oregon during that time. To this end, 16 ash samples were collected across central and eastern Oregon from various flow units within the RST. Samples were analyzed for δD using a temperature conversion elemental analyzer (TC/EA) connected to a mass spectrometer and elemental composition using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). We compared the isotopic results to modern water and published ancient water proxy data to better constrain changes in climate and topography across Oregon throughout the Neogene. We also estimated wt. % H2O by calculating excess (non-stoichiometric) oxygen from SEM elemental data. We did not observe significant variations in δD among the flow units from single locations, nor was there a significant relationship between the prepared glass shard composition and wt. % H2O or δD, supporting the use of volcanic glass as a reliable paleoenvironmental indicator. Our results show significant spatial variation in δDwater values of RST, ranging from −107‰ to −154‰. δD values of ancient glass were similar to modern water near the Cascade Mountains but became relatively negative to the east near the inferred eruptive center of the RST, suggesting that a significant topographic feature existed in the vicinity of the RST eruptive center that has since subsided.

Abstract:Oceanic crust constitutes the largest aquifer system on Earth, and microbial activity in this environment has been inferred from various geochemical analyses. However, empirical documentation of microbial activity from subsurface basalts is still lacking, particularly in the cool (<25°C) regions of the crust, where are assumed to harbor active iron-oxidizing microbial communities. To test this hypothesis, we report the enrichment and isolation of crust-associated microorganisms from North Pond, a site of relatively young and cold basaltic basement on the western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that was sampled during Expedition 336 of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. Enrichment experiments with different carbon (bicarbonate, acetate, methane) and nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium) sources revealed significant cell growth (one magnitude higher cell abundance), higher intracellular DNA content, and increased Fe(3+)/ΣFe ratios only when nitrogen substrates were added. Furthermore, a Marinobacter strain with neutrophilic iron-oxidizing capabilities was isolated from the basalt. This work reveals that basalt-associated microorganisms at North Pond had the potential for activity and that microbial growth could be stimulated by in vitro nitrogen addition. Furthermore, iron oxidation is supported as an important process for microbial communities in subsurface basalts from young and cool ridge flank basement.

Abstract:As the melting residue of the asthenosphere at ocean ridges, the oceanic mantle lithosphere is initially depleted, which might be re-enriched by various types of melts. However, the metasomatic enrichments in the sub-ridge mantle lithosphere are generally assumed to be limited, because these melts have low abundances of incompatible elements. In this study, we report a case of extreme metasomatic enrichment in abyssal peridotites from the Atlantis Bank oceanic core complex on the Southwest Indian Ridge. We identify two types of metasomatized peridotites (Type 1 and 2) and a clinopyroxenite, which show different degrees of interaction with evolved melts. Type 1 peridotite exhibits strong incompatible element zonation and negative Eu anomalies in clinopyroxene, indicating a short-term percolation of a modestly evolved mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB). Type 2 peridotite shows textural and trace element features consistent with the impregnation of a highly evolved, oxide-saturated MORB magma. The clinopyroxenite shows remarkable enrichments in iron and incompatible trace elements and negative Eu anomalies in clinopyroxene and contains abundant zircon and apatite, which imply reaction with an extremely evolved Fe–Zr–P-rich melt. We attribute such extreme mantle metasomatic enrichments to the lateral infiltration of variably evolved melts from a local magmatic center, which is now exposed as the Atlantis Bank gabbroic massif. As slow- and ultraslow-spreading ridges exhibit similarly discontinuous lower crust, the intervening shallow mantle between local magmatic centers may have been pervasively metasomatized by the evolved melts, leading the way for substantial mantle enrichment.

Abstract:We used molecular techniques to analyze basalts of varying ages that were collected from the East Pacific Rise, 9 degrees N, from the rift axis of the Juan de Fuca Ridge and from neighboring seamounts. Cluster analysis of 16S rDNA terminal restriction fragment polymorphism data revealed that basalt endoliths are distinct from seawater and that communities clustered, to some degree, based on the age of the host rock. This age-based clustering suggests that alteration processes may affect community structure. Cloning and sequencing of bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA genes revealed 12 different phyla and subphyla associated with basalts. These include the Gemmatimonadetes, Nitrospirae, the candidate phylum SBR1093 in the bacteria, and in the Archaea Marine Benthic Group B, none of which have been previously reported in basalts. We delineated novel ocean crust clades in the gamma-Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes and Actinobacteria that are composed entirely of basalt-associated microflora, and may represent basalt ecotypes. Finally, microarray analysis of functional genes in basalt revealed that genes coding for previously unreported processes such as carbon fixation, methane oxidation, methanogenesis and nitrogen fixation are present, suggesting that basalts harbor previously unrecognized metabolic diversity. These novel processes could exert a profound influence on ocean chemistry.
Neogene Hydrothermal Fe‐ and Mn‐Oxide Mineralization of Paleozoic Continental Rocks, Amerasia Basin, Arctic Ocean

Abstract:Rocks dredged from water depths of 1,605, 2,500, 3,300, and 3,400 m in the Arctic Ocean included Paleozoic continental rocks pervasively mineralized during the Neogene by hydrothermal Fe and Mn oxides. Samples were recovered in three dredge hauls from the Chukchi Borderland and one from Mendeleev Ridge north of Alaska and eastern Siberia, respectively. Many of the rocks were so pervasively altered that the protolith could not be identified, while others had volcanic, plutonic, and metamorphic protoliths. The mineralized rocks were cemented and partly to wholly replaced by the hydrothermal oxides. The Amerasia Basin, where the Chukchi Borderland and Mendeleev Ridge occur, supports a series of faults and fractures that serve as major zones of crustal weakness. We propose that the stratabound hydrothermal deposits formed through the flux of hydrothermal fluids along Paleozoic and Mesozoic faults related to block faulting along a rifted margin during minor episodes of Neogene tectonism and were later exposed at the seafloor through slumping or other gravity processes. Tectonically driven hydrothermal circulation most likely facilitated the pervasive mineralization along fault surfaces via frictional heating, hydrofracturing brecciation, and low‐ to moderate temperature Fe‐ and Mn‐rich hydrothermal fluids, which mineralized the crushed, altered, and brecciated rocks.

Abstract:Mid‐ocean ridge basalts reflect the mantle's composition and reveal processes from melting to eruption. The Mohns and Knipovich Ridges have ultraslow spreading rates, low magma budgets and erupted lavas indicating various mantle domains. Here, we use geochemistry and isotope systematics of in situ samples from two axial volcanic ridges (AVRs) to study mantle heterogeneity and melt production. By linking chemical variations to high‐resolution bathymetry and age data, we document systematic changes over time in the mantle source of the volcanic sequence. At Mohns Ridge AVR‐M10 (72.3°N), we observed significant variations in chemistry (e.g., (La/Sm)N from 0.7 to 2.9) and isotope systematics in basaltic samples from a small area (∼1 km2), suggesting the emplacement of multiple small‐volume lava flows. Pb isotope variations, for example, 206Pb/204Pb (17.91–18.76), are comparable with the observed range along the entire Mohns and Knipovich Ridges. Temporal constraints document that erupted basalts have changed from highly radiogenic Pb compositions to a more depleted signature within 30 ka. To explain the extreme variations in the erupted lavas at the Mohns Ridge, the mantle would need to be highly heterogeneous in composition with effective melt extraction and limited mixing prior to eruption. We use the highly heterogenous mantle underneath the Mohns Ridge to understand the melt extraction processes and mixing of melts and propose a two‐stage melting model: continuous generation of enriched melts from a deep and fertile source in the first stage, while depleted melts from a shallower and more refractory mantle occur sporadically and simultaneously with the intermittent ascent of diapirs.
