Abstract:Abstract Anoxia is a common phenomenon at the bottom of large reservoirs during thermal stratification. In an anoxic environment, an increasing amount of reducing substances and nutrients are released and settle at the hypolimnion of the reservoir, leading to water quality deterioration and eutrophication. This work presents a case study on Daheiting Reservoir, a part of the Water Diversion Project from the Luanhe River to Tianjin city. With the monitored data of the water temperature and dissolved oxygen content in the reservoir, and based on the mechanism of redox reactions, the water quality response to the hypolimnetic anoxia in Daheiting Reservoir was systematically analyzed. It was found that the release of total phosphorus from the sediments in Daheiting Reservoir was a joint effect of the biological and chemical processes, and the redox reaction in the anoxic zone boosted release of phosphorus. Anoxia in the reservoir caused the ammonia nitrogen released from sediments in the reservoir to accumulate at the hypolimnion, which increased the concentration of ammonia nitrogen in the water. Anoxia in the reservoir led to an increase in the concentration of iron and manganese, which accounts for the major driving factor of release of iron and manganese.

Abstract:Dissolved oxygen (DO) has a significant impact on aquatic ecological environment and the living conditions of fishes. Water quality, especially water temperature, reservoir discharge pattern and climatic conditions are believed to influence the changes in DO levels. A case study was carried out, considering all of the 3 conditions in the upstream of RURY (standing for National Nature Reserve for the Rare and Endemic Fishes in the Upper Reaches of the Yangtze River), which was established to protect the rare fish species in the Yangtze River. The study sites are in the downstream of the Xiangjiaba (XYB) and Xiluodu (XLD) reservoirs, which have been constructed and used for the initial impoundment. The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of abiotic conditions on the DO levels in the downstream reaches of the XJB and XLD reservoirs, and accordingly, to provide guidance on reservoirs' operations strategies to control the DO levels and maintain a relatively healthy aquatic ecological environment for the rare and endemic fishes there. Data of DO concentration, water temperature, pH levels, as well as 14 meteorological parameters and 7 hydrological parameters are considered in statistical modeling. The analysis was conducted via the analysis of the changes of DO levels and stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. The results indicate that (1) DO concentration and saturation in all monitoring stations significantly increased after initial impoundment; (2) the super-saturation of DO occurred downstream of the XLD and XJB reservoirs after each impoundment; (3) DO concentration and saturation downstream of the XJB reservoir were significantly affected by water-discharging patterns, atmosphere pressure (particularly its maximum value) and pH levels, whereas DO concentration and saturation downstream of the XLD reservoir were more related to atmospheric parameters, such as atmospheric temperature and wind speed.

Abstract:The cascade hydropower development in the Lancang River has significantly modified the hydrologic regime and is consequently responsible for many local environmental changes. The influence of the altered hydrological regime on heavy metals accumulation in the soils of the riparian zone was evaluated for the Xiaowan Reservoir (XWR). Specifically, this study focused on investigating the trace metals As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn and their concentrations in the riparian soils. Furthermore, this research aimed to examine the contamination levels of heavy metals by employing the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and the ecological risk index (RI), respectively. Additionally, the relationship between heavy metals and water level fluctuations as caused by the dam operation was explored. The results showed that heavy metals deposits occurred in relatively low levels in the riparian soils of XWR, even though several of these metals were revealed to occur in higher concentrations than the local background value. The Igeo assessment indicated that the riparian soils exhibited slight pollution by Hg at the Zhujie wharf (ZJW) and Cr at the transect of the Heihui River (HHR), and moderate contamination by As at ZJW. Moreover, the RI revealed that As in riparian soils is moderately hazardous while Hg poses a high risk at ZJW. The polluted water and sediments from upstream and upland of the riparian zone may be contributing to the changed concentrations of heavy metal in the riparian soils. The present study inferred that the WLFs due to reservoir impoundment play a vital role in the accumulation of trace metals in the riparian zone. However, more exhaustive investigations are necessary for verification.

Abstract:Abstract— The mechanism of relaxation produced by pirarubicin [(2″R)‐4′‐O‐tetrahydropyranyladriamycin, THP] has been studied in rat isolated aorta. THP (1·5 × 10−6–4·5 × 10−5 m) markedly relaxed contractions induced by noradrenaline (10−7 m) in the aorta with endothelium, but not in that without endothelium. The relaxation induced by 1·5 × 10−5 m THP was inhibited by methylene blue (5 × 10−6 m), hydroquinone (10−4 m), phenidone (5 × 10−5 m), haemoglobin (10−6 m) and p‐bromophenacyl bromide (5×10−5 m), but not by indomethacin (2·5 ×10−5 m). The relaxation induced by THP (1·5 × 10−7 − 4·5 × 10−5 m) was inhibited by NG‐nitro‐l‐arginine (10−5 m), but enhanced by superoxide dismutase (10 units mL−1) or by L‐arginine (10−2 m). However, the THP‐induced relaxation was not inhibited by various receptor antagonists such as atropine (10−6 m), cimetidine (10−5 m), diphenhydramine (3 × 10−6 m) and [D‐Pro4, D‐Trp7,9,10]‐substance P(4–11) (1·5 × 10−6 m). In fifteen anthracycline analogues, THP and 13‐dihydropirarubicin (both with a tetrahydropyranyl group) produced endothelium‐dependent relaxations. These results suggest that the THP‐induced relaxation which is probably mediated by endothelium‐derived relaxing factor (EDRF) was not produced by an activation of muscarine, histamine H1 or H2, or substance P receptor, and further that the tetrahydropyranyl group must play an important role in the THP‐induced relaxation.
Variations in concentrations and bioavailability of heavy metals in rivers during sediment suspension-deposition event induced by dams: insights from sediment regulation of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir in the Yellow River

Abstract:PurposeThe variations of concentrations, speciation, and bioavailability of heavy metals during large-scale sediment suspension-deposition events caused by dams in rivers are not well understood.Materials and methodsIn this study, the sediment regulation of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir of the Yellow River was chosen as a case to study the effects of large-scale sediment suspension-deposition events on the concentrations, speciation, and bioavailability of As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in river water, and the bioaccumulation and biotoxicity of heavy metals in river water samples to Daphnia magna were examined. The water in the reservoir was also collected to determine the suspended sediment (SPS) concentration and conduct bioaccumulation and biotoxicity experiments.Results and discussionDuring sediment regulation, the SPS concentration in river water increased from 0.02 g L−1 in the reservoir to 54.8 g L−1 at the dam outlet, and then it decreased along the downstream river due to SPS deposition. The heavy metal concentrations in SPS at the dam outlet were higher than those in the reservoir sediment and remained stable at downstream sites. No spatial trends were found in their exchangeable fraction. Correspondingly, the dissolved concentrations at the dam outlet were lower than those in the reservoir. The body burdens in Daphnia magna for the reservoir water samples were higher than those for the dam outlet. However, higher lethality of Daphnia magna at the dam outlet was found due to other contaminant release caused by sediment resuspension.ConclusionsThe results revealed that the resuspended sediment which has smaller particle sizes and more sorption sites in the reservoir was a “sink” for heavy metals; the downstream SPS deposition process has no considerable influence on the heavy metal distribution. This study suggests that sediment regulation is conducive to delivering the reservoir sediment to the sea and reducing the eco-environmental risks of heavy metals in the downstream of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir. However, it might increase the total eco-environmental risks of pollutants.

Abstract:In order to insight into the variation of the dissolved oxygen ( DO) concentration and saturation downstream the Xiluodu-Xiangjiaba cascade reservoirs after their completion of construction and initial impoundment , the DO concentration and saturation were monitored from July 2012 to November 2013 in the downstream river of Xiangjiaba dam , moreover , the relationships between the DO levels with the main factors were analyzed .The results indicated that: 3 DO super saturation events were observed downstream of the Xiangjiaba dam , but none of them occurred in the downstream river of the joint of Minjiang River; water temperature which changes along with the season and the flow variation may have evident influence on the DO saturation in the downstream river; the DO concentration was negatively correlated with water temperature and the discharge of the Xiangjiaba hydropower station , whereas the DO saturation was positively correlated with the deep ori-fice discharge of Xiangjiaba reservoir , and was negatively correlated with the respective percentage of the discharge of hy -dropower station .In order to avoid DO super saturation , the respective percentage of the discharge of hydropower station should be by the cascade reservoirs optimal operation .
Impact of Artificial Water and Sediment Discharge Regulation in the Huanghe (yellow River) on the Transport of Particulate Heavy Metals to the Sea

Abstract:Variations in the concentrations of major particulate heavy metals (PHMs) (Mn, Pb, Zn, V, Cr, and Ni) and fluxes into the sea during the water–sediment regulation scheme (WSRS) in the Huanghe (Yellow River) were examined based on observational and measured data during June and July of 2009. Two stages of variations in the concentrations of PHMs were observed in the WSRS with lower values in the early stage and higher values in the late stage. The early stage corresponded to a high water discharge with coarser sediment that was largely scored from the riverbed, and the late stage corresponded to a low water discharge with much finer sediment that was released from the Xiaolangdi reservoir. The significant increase in PHM concentrations by 2–4 fold from the early to the late stage largely resulted from a decrease in the suspended-sediment grain size and an increase in the quantity of anthropogenic pollutants caused by changes in the sediment sources from riverbed in the lower reaches to the Xiaolangdi reservoir during the WSRS. The concentrations of PHMs, particularly in the late stage of the WSRS, were approximately two times as high as those during the pre-WSRS period as the anthropogenic pollutants have been increasing in recent years. More than 57% of the annual quantity of PHMs was transported to the sea during the WSRS, and over 34% of that from the Xiaolangdi reservoir was delivered to the sea during the late stage of the WSRS over a period of approximately 4–5days. This large quantity of heavy metals, with a high proportion of labile components because of the increasing contribution of anthropogenic pollutants, emptied into the sea over a short period and may thus drastically alter the eco-environment in the river mouth and its adjacent seas.
Backwater makes the tributaries of large river becoming phosphorus "sink"

Abstract:The complex hydrological conditions caused by the backwater effect at the confluence inevitably modify the geochemical processes of elements. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the precise transformation mechanisms of nutrients in large river systems. This study aimed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics and their impact on phosphorus transfer in the lower Han River, which is influenced by backwater from the Yangtze River (the largest river in China). By establishing a hydrodynamic-water quality model, we have determined that the discharge ratio (the ratio of flow between the Han River discharge and the Yangtze River discharge) can be utilized as a representative indicator of the backwater effect from the Yangtze River on the Han River. Three distinct patterns were identified in this study: mixing, backwater, and intrusion. The corresponding discharge ratio values were categorized as >0.08, 0.01∼0.08, and <0.01 respectively. Additionally, the extent of the backwater zone was determined, revealing that the length of the backwater zone increased from 50 km (XG) to 100 km (FS) as the discharge ratio decreased from 0.08 to 0.01. Furthermore, it was observed that the water level at the confluence rose from 2.52 m to 6.83 m in accordance with these changes in discharge ratio values. The migration pattern of phosphorus primarily involved the settling and retention of particulate phosphorus, particularly the labile particulate organic phosphorus (LOP) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP). When the confluent patterns became the intrusion pattern, the backwater zone expanded to 150 m (XT), causing a 10.40 m increase in water level at the confluence. An intrusion zone formed, and its phosphorus concentrations were same as Yangtze River's. Above the intrusion area, a backwater region formed and its concentrations of LOP and DOP decreased, while the concentration of PO43- increased due to the release from resuspended particles. This release was induced by higher velocity of bottom water brought about by the water exchange of two rivers. The discharge ratio of 0.01-0.08 resulted in the sedimentation of LOP and DOP, causing the lower Han River to act as a "sink" for phosphorus, potentially exacerbating phosphorus pollution. Higher discharge ratios in spring led to phosphorus release from sediment, increasing dissolved phosphorus concentrations and raising the risk of algal blooms in the lower Han River. These findings have significant implications for larger rivers worldwide and provide insights into strategies for ecological management and prevention of algal blooms.
Impact of a large sub-tropical reservoir on the cycling of nutrients in a river

Abstract:The quantity and composition of nutrients carried by rivers play an important role in maintaining the ecosystem of downstream rivers and marginal seas. To reveal the impact of damming on the composition and flux changes of nutrients in rivers, this study conducted a detailed survey of a large sub-tropical reservoir (Xinanjiang Reservoir, XAJR) in eastern China from August 2013 to June 2014 obtaining samples at bi-monthly intervals. The thermal stratification, water quality in situ parameters, and the contents of nutrients in the water column of the river inflow, transition area, central reservoir area, and discharge water of the XAJR were analyzed in detail along the fluvial direction. The results show that the thermal stratification of the XAJR had seasonal and spatial heterogeneity. Accordingly, the pH and dissolved oxygen saturation degree in water also showed a similar stratification phenomenon. The analysis of nutrient limitation for primary productivity indicated that in different seasons, varying limiting degrees of the silicon or phosphorus were developed in different locations along the XAJR- river system. Among them, the river area and transition area were more susceptible to silicon restriction in winter, whereas phosphorus restriction mainly occurred during the warm seasons from April to October. XAJR had a retention effect on nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon, among which phosphorus was more easily retained by the reservoir. In addition, nitrogen underwent transformation processes between different forms inside the reservoir. In the reservoir, the different degrees of retention effect of nutrients also led to a significant increase in the ratio of silicon to phosphorus and nitrogen to phosphorus in the discharged water. This study confirmed that thermal stratification has important control over the contents and forms of nutrients in water. This finding provided an idea for the restoration of the fluxes and stoichiometric ratios of the nutrients in the downstream river using the reservoir's capacity for artificial regulation.
Autochthonous sources and drought conditions drive anomalous oxygen-consuming pollution increase in a sluice-controlled reservoir in eastern China

Abstract:Freshwater reservoirs are an important type of inland waterbody. However, they can suffer from oxygen-consuming pollution, which can seriously threaten drinking water safety and negatively impact the health of aquatic ecosystems. Oxygen-consuming pollutants originate from both allochthonous and autochthonous sources, and have temporally and spatially heterogeneous drivers. Datanggang Reservoir, China, is located in a small agricultural watershed; it is controlled by multiple sluice gates. Anomalously high oxygen consumption indicators were observed in this reservoir in March 2021. Here, it was hypothesized that autochthonous sources were the primary drivers of oxygen-consuming pollution in the reservoir under drought conditions. Datasets of water quality, precipitation, primary productivity, and sediment were used to analyze water quality trends in the reservoir and inflow rivers, demonstrating the effects of allochthonous inputs and autochthonous pollution. No correlation was found between reservoir oxygen consumption indicators and allochthonous inputs; reservoir oxygen consumption indicators and chlorophyll- a concentration were significantly positively correlated ( p < 0.05). Substantially lower precipitation and higher water temperature and pH (compared to historical levels) were also observed before the pollution event. Therefore, during this period the hydrological conditions, water temperature, pH, and other variables caused by short-term drought conditions may have facilitated phytoplankton growth in the reservoir. This contributed to a large increase in autochthonous oxygen-consuming pollutants, as reflected by the abnormally high indicators. Sediments contaminated with organic matter may also have been an important contributor. As the effects of environmental management and pollution control continue to emerge, exogenous pollutants imported from the land to reservoirs are currently effectively controlled. However, endogenous pollutants driven by a variety of factors, such as meteorology and hydrology, will likely become the main drivers of short-term changes in oxygen-consuming pollution in freshwater reservoirs in the foreseeable future.

Abstract:Anthropogenic nutrient input stimulates surface eutrophication and algal blooms and thus exacerbates oxygen depletion and hypoxia in aquatic ecosystems. However, existing studies have paid little attention on the understanding of the feedback relationships among oxygen consumption, algal succession and greenhouse gas effect after river damming, particularly in Three Gorges Reservoir. This field work investigated the thermal stratification, water quality and phytoplankton in four tributaries (Pengxi Bay (PXB), Daning Bay (DNB), Shennong Bay (SNB), and Xiangxi Bay (XXB)) of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in spring (April 25-28, 2022), and explored the drivers of hypoxia and its feedback response to algal blooms and methane (CH 4 ) emissions. The results showed that during the observation period, DO, thermal stratification, and algal blooms were more severe in PXB. The high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD Mn ) (11.27 mg•L -1 ) and Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) content (7.56 mg•L -1 ) in PXB were the main causes of the progressive hypoxia. Furthermore, stronger density stratification in PXB inhibited the vertical supply of DO and accelerated bottom hypoxia. But the downslope density current replenished bottom DO in the upper reaches of the DNB, SNB, and XXB. The CH4 concentration was generally higher in hypoxia zone, especially in where cyanobacteria are the dominant species (eg., PX03 and PX04). Dam construction led to the succession of algal-dominant species, exerting a significant influence on the river carbon cycle. The expansion of cyanobacterial blooms and the consequence of metabolic substrates increase are gradually increasing oxygen deprivation, even hypoxia, and enhancing CH 4 production in rivers. These findings suggest that the succession of algal-dominant species caused by river damming has a pronounced positive feedback effect on reservoir hypoxia processes and greenhouse effect.

Abstract:The resting stages of phytoplankton are usually regarded as the seed bank and source of harmful algal blooms because of the recruitment of phytoplankton from sediment to the water column under suitable environmental conditions. Information about resting stages of phytoplankton is abundant in shallow lakes and littoral sea; yet, studies on river–reservoir systems are rare. The river–reservoir continuum shows a unique structuring of longitudinal gradients of hydrological and hydrodynamic conditions. We hypothesized that the seed bank and algal blooms in reservoirs are influenced by the hydrodynamic conditions of each reservoir. We used Illumina Miseq sequencing to examine the spatio-temporal variation in the phytoplankton community in the sediment as reservoir drawdown and in surface water during algal blooms in Pengxi River, a tributary of China’s Three Gorges Reservoir. The results show that the cyanobacteria community in sediment is significantly influenced by temperature, total carbon, maximum flow velocity, and total phosphorous, the eukaryotic phytoplankton community in sediment is significantly influenced by total phosphorous, temperature, total carbon, maximum flow velocity, and total nitrogen. Additionally, the dominant species in sediment is significantly different from that in surface water during algal blooms. Our results suggest that the dominant species in surface water during algal blooms is more influenced by the environmental factors and hydrodynamic conditions in the water column than the seeds in the sediment. These findings are fundamental for further research on the influence of hydrodynamic conditions on algal blooms in artificially regulated river-reservoir systems.

Abstract:The recovery of water temperature and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) of the bottom layer water of a stratified reservoir along the downstream river remains poorly understood. In this study, a field investigation and an experiment were carried out on the test section on the Wenxia River. Water temperature and DO were measured and macro invertebrates were sampled along the test section. Effects of step-pool and sand bar on reaeration ability were inspected in the experiment. The results showed that (1) water temperature and DO increase along the river; and water temperature is more susceptible to channel width than DO; (2) downstream species diversity of macroinvertebrates increases with the reaeration process of the stream; (3) discharge has an influence on the diurnal variation of reaeration capability for a step-pool channel because of high variance of submergence under different discharges; (4) DO is transversely distributed downstream a sand bar, high at the tail but low in the two tributaries flowing by.

Abstract:The thermal regimes of rivers play an important role in the overall health of aquatic ecosystems. Modifications to water temperature regimes resulting from dams and reservoirs have important consequences for river ecosystems. This study investigates the impacts of the impoundment of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) on the water temperature regime of fish spawning habitats in the middle reach of the Yangtze River, China. Mike 11 model is used to analyze the temporal and spatial variation of water temperatures of the expanse of 400 km along the river, from Yichang to Chenglingji. The water temperature alterations caused by the operation of the TGR are assessed with river temperature metrics. The impact on spawning habitats due to water temperature variation was also discussed in different impoundments of the TGR. The results show that the TGR has significantly altered the downstream water temperature regime, affecting the baseline deviation and phase shift of the water temperature. Such impacts on the thermal regime of the river varied with the impoundment level. The effects of the TGR on the water temperature regime decreased as the distance from the structure to the sample site increased. The water temperature regime alterations have led to the delay of the spawning times of the four famous major carp (FFMC) species. The results could be used to identify the magnitudes of water temperature alterations induced by reservoirs in the Yangtze River and provide useful information to design ecological operations for the protection of river ecosystem integrity in regulated rivers.

Abstract:Eutrophication with the sustained occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) has been widely recognized since the 1990s as one of the largest drinking water quality issues in the middle and lower reaches of the Han River (MLHR, the largest tributary of Yangtze). Due to impoundment of the middle route of the South to North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP), the height of the Danjiangkou Reservoir Dam was raised in 2014, resulting in lower discharge (or flow rate) for the MLHR, and subsequently enhancing the potential occurrence probabilities of HABs. Here, the characteristics of HABs that took place during the 1992 to 2018 period were summarized based on the historical water quality and meteorological data. Then, some key factors governing the HABs were analyzed to explore the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that diatoms (Cyclotella sp.) were the dominant species of the HABs. The simultaneous increase of algal density and total phosphorus (TP) concentration during algal blooms revealed that phosphorus was the key limiting nutrient for algal growth. The algal density was significantly negatively correlated with water discharge (R2 = 0.764), or flow rate (R2 = 0.711), indicating that the increase of water discharge from Danjiangkou Reservoir could possibly mitigate the occurrence of HABs. The threshold level of water discharge for HAB prevention was estimated as 500 m3/s in Xiantao Gauging Station before the height of the Dam was raised in 2014, but it subsequently increased to 800 m3/s afterwards. Our study clearly revealed that the occurrence probabilities of HABs in the MLHR were higher than before because of the increase in the phosphorus concentration and the decrease in water discharge under the new engineering conditions of the SNWDP. Therefore, it is urgent to undertake strategies for the HABs prevention in the MLHR.
Influence of anti-seasonal inundation on geochemical processes of arsenic speciation in the water-level-fluctuation zone soil of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China

Abstract:Since the completion of Three Gorges Dam, the water-level-fluctuation zone (WLFZ) of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) experiences the periodic anti-seasonal inundation. However, knowledge for mechanisms of mobilization and transformation of arsenic (As) in WLFZ soils of the TGR remains scarce. To address this gap, a combination of field observation and simulated flooding experiments attempts to illustrate the As mobilization, the transformation between As(V) and As(III), and the factors driving these processes. The study revealed that anti-seasonal inundation (with a temperature at 13 ℃) mitigated As release from submerged soils. Interestingly, the total As and ratio of As(III) (the more toxic form of As) concentrations in porewater at 13 ℃ was lower, and the prevalence of As(III) occurred later than those at 32 °C (imitate the seasonal inundation condition). The results indicated that the As reduction and the corresponding toxic risks in submerged soils were alleviated under anti-seasonal inundation. The study proposes the reduction of As-bearing manganese (Mn) mineral assemblages and competitive adsorption of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as primary mechanisms for As mobilization. Furthermore, microorganism-mediated detoxification/reduction processes involving DOC, nitrogen, and Mn (oxyhydr)oxides were identified as central pathways for As(III) enrichment under anti-seasonal inundation. This study enhances understandings of the biogeochemical processes and fate of As in WLFZ soils influenced by artificial regulation of the reservoir.

Abstract:AbstractThe Douhe Reservoir is an important diversion water source and drinking water resource for Tianjin and the Tangshan cities. Panjiakou, Daheiting, Qiuzhuang, and the Douhe Reservoirs located from top to bottom in the LuanHe River region forming a group of cascade reservoirs. After over 30 years of aquaculture, the concentration of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) have exceeded Class III of Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water in China. We selected the Douhe Reservoir as the study site and choose sampling points in several upstream reservoirs and main reservoir area, and we collected a total of 18 water samples. Moreover, the distribution characteristics of N and P levels in flood season and dry season were studied in the Douhe Reservoir and upstream water channel, respectively. The results indicated that there were significant spatial differences between N and P distribution in the Douhe Reservoir and the upstream sites. We observed that the distribution of N and P had seasonal characteristics, and the contents of nitrate(NO3−-N), nitrogen(TN), total phosphorus(TP), and total dissolved phosphorus(TDP) in flood periods were higher than those in dry periods. The microbial community structure illustrated that the dominant phylum displayed seasonal differences between the upstream channel and the reservoir area. Among them, the abundance of some genera changed with the location of the channel, the microbial community structure, and the levels of N and P, especially in flood season. Particularly, NO3−-N and TN had the most significant correlation. Hence, this study presented an important theoretical foundation for the risk prevention and the control of nutrient elements in the LuanHe River basin in the future, which would enhance the drinking water safety of Tianjin and Tangshan residents.

Abstract:The eastern route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP-ER) in China, an open-channel cross-basin project, is exposed to multiple potential pollution sources and has changing hydrodynamic conditions between diversion and non-diversion periods. After a decade of pollution control efforts, it is imperative to perceive the water quality conditions and identify potential pollution factors for further maintenance. Combining the water quality identification index (WQII) and multivariate statistical techniques (MSTs), this study conducted an exploratory analysis in SNWDP-ER, based on the monitoring data in 2020–2021. The monitoring and WQII results show that the overall water quality in SNWDP-ER is satisfactory and meets the Class III requirements in China Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water , except for total nitrogen (TN) which falls into Class V or even worse. The periodic alternations of flow direction between diversion and non-diversion periods tend to deteriorate water quality, particularly in the initial stage of alternations. Water quality appears more stable during the diversion period, and impounding lakes along the project are crucial to water environment restoration in this period. Due to the positive influence brought by the self-purification and environmental carrying in the Luoma Lake, Nansi Lake, and Dongping Lake, water quality exhibits an enhancing trend from upstream to downstream in the Lianghu and Jiaodong reaches. Besides, the monitoring stations in Shandong reach exhibit significant divisional heterogeneity under hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) with the Nansi Lake and Dongping Lake as the demarcation points, and the results of factor analysis/principal component analysis (FA/PCA) further identified the contributions of mining, shipping, and land use to each section. Based on the findings, the study recommends implementing wastewater discharge control, abandoned mines remediation, and continued water quality monitoring for further maintenance and improvement in SNWDP-ER.

Abstract:Background: As the most widely distributed river form in the world, meandering river is of great significance for stabilizing the physical structure of the river and maintaining ecosystem. To quantitatively study the positive effects of meandering rivers, the Chishui River, a natural tributary of the Yangtze River in Southwest China, is selected as the research area, and two typical river sections with different meandering degrees are selected as the research objects. Methods: Based on the field survey data, the local endemic fish Procypris rabaudi (Tchang) is considered the object fish, and a hydrodynamic model was used to simulate the distribution of water depth and flow velocity in certain river reaches at different flows. By introducing the weighted usable area (WUA) and hydraulic unit diversity index, combined with the suitability curves of the study species, the hydraulic characteristics and habitat suitability changes of two river reaches under different flows are summarized and analyzed, and the hydrogeomorphological process of the studied river section is generalized. Results: With the change in discharge, a positive correlation is observed between the maximum velocity and depth of the meandering river and the discharge, whereas the WUA and hydraulic unit index of the meandering river have relatively small changes. Under low discharge, the distribution of pool-riffle sequences can be seen in the meandering reach, which is essential to improve the ecological suitability and stability of the river. Conclusions: This study provides scientific sustentation for river restoration and fish conservation.
