Abstract:Based on the AERONET data in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), we evaluate the accuracy of the regional aerosol size in terms of the fine mode fraction (FMF) which can be explained by the Ångström exponent (AE). When we analyzed the seasonal pattern in the IGP it was found that there is a weak correlation between AE and FMF in winter and post-monsoon seasons. Dibrugarh has the lowest correlation due to the high relative humidity, low boundary layer height, and low wind speed compared to other sites. The distribution of volume sizes shows seasonal patterns, with a noticeable rise in the median volume and peak radius of the fine mode throughout the winter and post-monsoon seasons. The confinement of biomass-burning and agricultural residue smoke plumes inside the lower troposphere throughout the winter and post-monsoon seasons has a greater negative impact on correlation. The AE ratio denoted as AER, which is calculated by using the values of AE at longer and shorter wavelengths, shows a stronger correlation with the FMF variations in Dibrugarh compared to the AE in other locations in IGP (Amity University Gurgaon, Gandhi College, Jaipur, Kanpur, and Lahore). Based on this, it seems that taking into consideration both AE and AER together might potentially result in a more accurate categorization in comparison to FMF. Thus, we use the multiple linear regression method to calculate the FMF using both AE and AER and also compare it with the multi non-linear model based on statistical parameters. Strong linear correlations have been found between the FMF estimated and the FMF from AERONET, and do not display any seasonal bias. The results suggest that the FMF in IGP may be easily acquired by measuring the Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) at a spectrum of wavelength.
