Abstract:In this study, a novel nanocatalyst (MgAl2O4@SiO2–PTA) was recommended for the oxidation of benzylic alcohols. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized by spectroscopic and microscopic methods, such as X-ray diffraction, SEM, FT-IR, EDX, ICP-AES, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area analysis. In this paper, magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4), used as the supporting catalyst, provides the recycling and reusing the catalyst and also increases the efficiency of the reaction. The nanocomposite was investigated as a catalyst for the selective oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and water as a solvent. Primary alcohols were converted to aldehydes but secondary alcohols were converted to ketones. Benzylic alcohols have better oxidative reactions than aliphatic alcohols. Among the oxidation reactions of the benzylic alcohols investigated in this project, the oxidation reaction of 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone was more efficient than other reactions (98%). This nanocatalyst is environmentally friendly because it could be recovered by simple filtration. The catalyst was used five times successfully without any changes or loss of its high catalytic activity.

Abstract:The solvent-free selective oxidation of alcohols by O-2 without any additives has been studied using palladium nanoparticles supported on a titanate nanobelt. The catalysts were prepared by polyol reduction and impregnation with different kinds of supports. They were evaluated in oxidation reactions of benzyl alcohol. The calcined titanate nanobelt was found to be the best support for the solvent-free Pd-catalyzed oxidation of alcohols and excellent catalytic activity as well as high selectivity to the corresponding benzaldehyde could be obtained. Moreover, palladium nanoparticles immobilized on the calcined titanate nanobelt could completely suppress the formation of toluene and benzoic acid, an effect that might be caused by the enhanced basic nature and morphology of the support. The catalyst was not only active and selective towards carbonyl compounds, but also recyclable under the oxidation conditions. This catalyst was also applicable for the oxidation of other alcohols.

Abstract:Seven soluble metal nanoparticle catalysts including Pt, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Ag and Au were synthesized and studied for the aqueous-phase selective oxidation of non-activated alcohols under atmospheric pressure of O(2). The effects of particle size were examined on the Pt catalysts with mean diameters of 1.5-4.9 nm. Pt nanoparticles efficiently catalyze the aerobic oxidation of alicyclic and aliphatic alcohols, in particular, primary aliphatic alcohols in the absence of any base. The particle sizes of the Pt catalysts strongly influence their activities, and the one of 1.5 nm exhibits much higher turnover frequencies. In comparison with the other metals examined in this work, it is concluded that Pt is the best metal of choice for the aerobic alcohol oxidation. Aliphatic primary alcohols reacts on the Pt catalysts more preferentially over their isomeric secondary alcohols with increasing their chain length or as they coexist. These steric effects, and the observed kinetic isotope effects with 1-C(4)H(9)OD and 1-C(4)D(9)OD are consistent with the general alcohol oxidation mechanism, which includes a sequence of elementary steps involving the formation of the alcoholate intermediates in quasi-equilibrated 1-C(4)H(9)OH dissociation on the Pt surfaces and the rate-determining hydrogen abstraction from the alcoholates. The inhibiting effects of hydroquinone, a typical radical scavenger, are indicative of the formation of radical intermediates in the H-abstraction step.

Abstract:An environmentally benign oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and metal dodecanesulfonate salts as catalysts was conducted under solvent-free condition by biphasic catalysis. Ferric tridodecanesulfonate showed excellent catalytic activity exhibiting complete conversion of benzyl alcohol with 194.4mol/molcat turnover number (TON) and nearly 100% selectivity to benzaldehyde at ambient pressure and 90°C. This catalyst can be recovered and reused for three times without a significant loss in its activity and selectivity.

Abstract:In this work, the catalytic activity of a palladium(II) isatin Schiff base complex immobilized into mesoporous silica KIT-6 (Pd-isatin Schiff base@KIT-6) was studied for the oxidation of different alcohols with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP, 70% aqueous solution) as an oxidant under solvent-free conditions. To find the suitable reaction conditions, the effect of essential factors including the solvent, temperature, catalyst amount and kind of oxidant on the oxidation of benzyl alcohol was explored. The results showed that in this catalytic system, the corresponding aldehydes and ketones were obtained with high to excellent yields at 50 °C without the formation of carboxylic acids as by-products. The catalyst was easily recovered by simple filtration and reused in five subsequent reaction cycles without any significant loss in the catalytic activity. Moreover, the comparison of the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) images of the used catalyst with a fresh one showed that the structure of the Pd-isatin Schiff base@KIT-6 catalyst remained intact after five times of reuse.

Solvent-free Selective Oxidation of Alcohols by Molecular Oxygen over Gold Nanoparticles Supported on Β-Mno2 Nanorods

Abstract:The performances of a series of MnO2-supported gold nanocatalysts with varying gold loading were studied in the solvent-free selective oxidation of alcohols by molecular oxygen. The gold was deposited onto the beta-MnO2 support, featuring one dimensional rod-like morphology, by means of homogeneous deposition-precipitation. The catalytic activity of the catalyst for the solvent-free aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol was found to increase with increasing gold loading, with the highest specific activity in terms of turnover frequencies (TOF) being achieved over the catalyst with 5 wt.% gold loading. Both XRD and TEM results showed that the majority of Au particles of various catalysts have diameters in the range of 2-6 nm. Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) results indicated that the reducibility of MnO2 was significantly enhanced with the surface-deposited gold nanoparticles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the coexistence of both oxidized and metallic gold species on the surface of MnO2, the composition of which depends critically on the gold loading. The superior specific activity of the catalyst with 5% gold loading was attributed to the presence of higher amounts of positive gold species and more surface oxygen vacancy sites resulting from stronger metal-support interactions as compared to other catalysts. Selective Aerobic Oxidation of Aromatic Alcohols Catalyzed by Tio(2): an Insight on the Effect of Surface Fluorination

Abstract:To achieve better activity, TiO(2) was modified through surface fluorination using hydrofluoric acid (denoted as HF-TiO(2)). The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared HF-TiO(2) and pure TiO(2) photocatalysts were evaluated for selective aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Experimental results indicated that without any loss of selectivity (>98%), distinct rate enhancement can be observed on HF-TiO(2) comparing to pure TiO(2). To optimize the condition of pretreatment, different concentrations of hydrofluoric acid were also used and the optimal concentration was determined to be 2%. Moreover, the dynamics of benzyl alcohol oxidation followed pseudo-first-order kinetic. By ESR technique and experiments adding different captures, the active specie is determined to be O(2) while O(2).- and H(2)O(2) were byproducts of the reaction. In a word, this study opens a new path to obtain both high selectivity and conversion yield by TiO(2) photocatalysis.

Abstract:Oxidation of aldehydes, alcohols or carbohydrate derivatives can be performed with air in aqueous media, in the presence of palladium and platinum catalysts under mild conditions (293–353K and atmospheric pressure). These reactions provide valuable products and intermediates for fine chemistry. They have been known for a long time, but much effort in the last 20 years has focused on this approach, because these catalytic reactions are environmentally friendly and could replace stoichiometric oxidations with mineral oxidizing agents. An oxidative dehydrogenation mechanism on the reduced metal surface has been generally accepted. During this process, a strong deactivation of the catalysts is often reported, which is a cause of serious concern for process development. Several causes of deactivation have been put forward: oxidation of metal, blocking of active sites by strong adsorption of side-products, metal leaching and growth of platinum crystallites. The addition of certain p-electron metal promoters (e.g. Bi, Pb) has been shown to play a useful dual role in reducing catalysts deactivation and in changing the selectivity of reactions. The performances of the catalysts can also be improved by modification of the metallic surface with strongly adsorbing nitrogen-containing bases or phosphines.A few illustrative examples will be given, which show that carbohydrates, aliphatic or aromatic alcohols, and polyols can be oxidized with high selectivities into valuable products.

Abstract:Platinum nanoparticles supported on Ca(Mg)-ZSM-5 is an efficient, highly selective and stable catalyst for room-temperature oxidation of alcohols in water. Based on in situ EPR measurement and the radical trapping technique, we propose that the generation of ˙OH radicals by cleavage of the O-O bond in the H2O2 intermediate is the rate determining step, which participated in the abstraction of H from the α-C-H bond of alcohol molecules to produce aldehydes/ketones.

Abstract:A novel metal-free, reusable, and green catalytic system comprising hydrothermal carbon microspheres (HCMSs) supporting N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) was developed and employed in the aerobic oxidation of alcohol. Hierarchically porous HCMSs with good monodispersity were produced by the hydrothermal carbonization of sucrose and designed NaOH-impregnated calcination under a static air atmosphere. The meso- and macroporous pores on HCMSs make up 71% of the total pore volume. The covalent immobilization of NHPI onto HCMSs was first accomplished by grafting hyperbranched polyquaternary amine via repetitive ring-opening reactions of diglycidyl ether and subsequent amidation with 4-carboxy-NHPI. Owing to the cocatalysis of grafted quaternary ammonium salt, a designed heterogeneous catalyst has superior performance to free NHPI in the oxidation of 2-phenylethanol. The established catalytic system achieved 42% conversion and up to 96% selectivity of acetophenone at 90 °C under 1 atm O2 for 20 h and presented a versatile catalytic effect for diversified alcohols. Immobilized NHPI could be facilely recycled via simple filtration and displayed good stability for six cycles without a discernible decrease of reactivity or damage of catalyst morphology in repeated oxidation test.

Abstract:A series of hydrotalcite (HT) and hydrotalcite modified by the transition metal ion Ni(II) was prepared with a modified coprecipitation method before being loaded with gold nanoparticles. The gold supported on Ni3Al hydrotalcite with a Ni2+/Al3+ molar ratio of 3:1 was investigated. Different techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis diffuse reflection spectrum (UV-vis DRS) were applied to characterize the catalysts. A single-phase catalyst with high crystallinity, a layered structure and good composition was successfully fabricated. Good conversions and superior selectivities in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol and its derivatives were obtained with visible light due to the effect of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of gold nanoparticles and the synergy of the transition metal ion Ni(II). This reaction was proven to be photocatalytic by varying the intensity and wavelength of the visible light. The catalyst can be recycled three times. A corresponding photocatalytic mechanism of the oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol was proposed.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles supported on polymorphs of gallia (α-, β-, and γ-Ga2O3) were evaluated for the solvent-free liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol by molecular oxygen. High selectivity to benzaldehyde was obtained under the reaction conditions of 130°C, 5atm and 5h in an autoclave. The Au/γ-Ga2O3 catalyst was also evaluated for oxidation of a range of alcohols using mesitylene as solvent under flowing oxygen at atmospheric pressure and 90°C. Under these conditions the conversion of benzyl alcohol reached 100% after 2h and it was demonstrated that the catalyst can be recycled four times without significant loss of activity. The structural data (TEM, XPS and TPSR of 2-propanol adsorption) along with the catalytic results indicate that the unique dehydrogenation capabilities of the Au/γ-gallia system are responsible for the enhanced activity achieved in the liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles supported on magnesium oxide nanorods (Au-MgO) have been synthesised by a solution based chemical reduction method. Au-MgO nanorods were found to be an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for oxidation of alcohols with hydrogen peroxide in aqueous medium at room temperature. To find out the best reaction conditions for oxidation, optimization of catalyst quantity, solvent, mole equivalence of hydrogen peroxide were carried out. The scope of the reaction was extended to several aromatic and aliphatic alcohols, product yields were quantified by gas chromatography (GC) and GC/mass spectroscopy. Heterogeneity and reusability tests were performed. The use of water as a solvent and hydrogen peroxide as co-catalyst at room temperature makes the reaction interesting from sustainable development point of view.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach for the selective oxidation of alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes through direct mechanocatalysis, employing a gold-coated milling vessel as catalyst and air as the oxidation agent. By adjusting milling frequency, media, and duration, high catalytic efficiencies and selectivities are achieved. Remarkably, yields of up to 99% are obtained for specific substrates, with a turnover number (TON) of 8200 and a turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.77 s-1, surpassing existing alternatives. Confirmation of the catalytic reaction indeed occurring on the milling tool surface was achieved through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Abstract:A main obstacle in the rational development of heterogeneous catalysts is the difficulty in identifying active sites. Here we show metal/oxide interfacial sites are highly active for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol and other industrially important primary alcohols on a range of metals and oxides combinations. Scanning tunnelling microscopy together with density functional theory calculations on FeO/Pt(111) reveals that benzyl alcohol enriches preferentially at the oxygen-terminated FeO/Pt(111) interface and undergoes readily O-H and C-H dissociations with the aid of interfacial oxygen, which is also validated in the model study of Cu2O/Ag(111). We demonstrate that the interfacial effects are independent of metal or oxide sizes and the way by which the interfaces were constructed. It inspires us to inversely support nano-oxides on micro-metals to make the structure more stable against sintering while the number of active sites is not sacrificed. The catalyst lifetime, by taking the inverse design, is thereby significantly prolonged.
Solid-State Oxidation of Alcohols in Gold-Coated Milling Vessels via Direct Mechanocatalysis

Abstract:Alcohols are selectively oxidized to their corresponding aldehydes catalytically via mechanochemistry using a gold-coated milling vessel. Superior catalytic efficiency and selectivity was achieved through the meticulous modulation of milling frequency, duration, and media, complemented by controlled heating. Achieving a turnover number (TON) near 8200 and a turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.77 s-1, the system notably surpasses existing alternatives. Utilizing atmospheric oxygen as the primary oxidant facilitated significant yields, with the highest reaching up to 99% for selected substrates. The catalytic reaction indeed occurring on the surface of the vibrating milling ball was confirmed via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This study highlights the pivotal role of operational parameter optimization in enhancing catalysis, emphasizing the method's sustainability and broad applicability across various alcohol substrates. The findings contribute significantly to green chemistry, offering an efficient, sustainable approach to alcohol oxidation.

Abstract:The first mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) supported atomically precise palladium nanoclusters catalyzed alcohol oxidation reactions in water have been achieved. The catalysts was synthesized with simple impregnation method and well characterized by TEM, FT-IR, XPS anddiffuse reflectance optical spectrum and the results proved that the Pd nanoclustersimmobilized into the pores of MSNs.The as-prepared catalyst show excellent activity for the alcohol oxidation reactions with high yield under extremely mild aqueous conditions utilizes 1 atmosphere of molecular oxygen as sole oxidant. The features of clean system, gram-scale oxidation and easy recovery catalyst make this method cost effectively and environmentally benign.
Palladium-doped hierarchical ZSM-5 for catalytic selective oxidation of allylic and benzylic alcohols

Abstract:Hierarchical zeolites have the potential to provide a breakthrough in transport limitation, which hinders pristine microporous zeolites and thus may broaden their range of applications. We have explored the use of Pd-doped hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites for aerobic selective oxidation (selox) of cinnamyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol to their corresponding aldehydes. Hierarchical ZSM-5 with differing acidity (H-form and Na-form) were employed and compared with two microporous ZSM-5 equivalents. Characterization of the four catalysts by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen porosimetry, NH 3 temperature-programmed desorption, CO chemisorption, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy allowed investigation of their porosity, acidity, as well as Pd active sites. The incorporation of complementary mesoporosity, within the hierarchical zeolites, enhances both active site dispersion and PdO active site generation. Likewise, alcohol conversion was also improved with the presence of secondary mesoporosity, while strong Brønsted acidity, present solely within the H-form systems, negatively impacted overall selectivity through undesirable self-etherification. Therefore, tuning support porosity and acidity alongside active site dispersion is paramount for optimal aldehyde production.

Abstract:Zeolite-supported noble metal nanoparticles have been reported as active catalysts for complete oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) due to the combination of advantages of zeolite supports and noble metal species, where introducing more Al species (reduction of SiO2/Al2O3 ratios, SAR) and increasing hydrophobicity for zeolite supports are favorable for the complete oxidation of VOCs. Unfortunately, introduction of more Al species in the zeolite frameworks normally reduces the hydrophobicity of zeolite crystals. To overcome this problem, we rationally synthesize hydrophobic zeolites with low SAR by anchoring methyl group, exhibiting exceptionally catalytic performances in the complete oxidation of toluene at very low temperature (T-90 at 144 degrees C) after loading Pt species (1 wt%). Characterizations of the catalysts show a vital role of hydrophobic zeolites for adsorption of more toluene and fast desorption of water. The strategy for preparation of hydrophobic zeolite-supported noble metal catalysts might offer an alternative way to develop highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the complete oxidation of VOCs in the future.
Supported Gold Nanoparticles as Catalysts in Peroxidative and Aerobic Oxidation of 1-Phenylethanol under Mild Conditions

Abstract:The efficiency of Au/TiO2 based catalysts in 1-phenylethanol oxidation was investigated. The role of support modifiers (La2O3 or CeO2), influence of gold loading (0.5% or 4%) and redox pretreatment atmosphere, catalyst recyclability, effect of oxidant: tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) or O2, as well as the optimization of experimental parameters of the reaction conditions in the oxidation of this alcohol were studied and compared with previous studies on 1-octanol oxidation. Samples were characterized by temperature-programmed oxygen desorption (O2-TPD) method. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were carried out for used catalysts to find out the reason for deactivation in 1-phenylethanol oxidation. The best catalytic characteristics were shown by catalysts modified with La2O3, regardless of the alcohol and the type of oxidant. When O2 was used, the catalysts with 0.5% Au, after oxidative pretreatment, showed the highest activity in both reactions. The most active catalysts in 1-phenylethanol oxidation with TBHP were those with 4% Au and the H2 treatment, while under the same reaction conditions, 0.5% Au and O2 treatment were beneficial in 1-octanol oxidation. Despite the different chemical nature of the substrates, it seems likely that Au+(Auδ+) act as the active sites in both oxidative reactions. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations confirmed that the gold cationic sites play an essential role in 1-phenylethanol adsorption.
