Abstract:Parental feeding practices can be crucial to preventing childhood obesity. This study aimed to validate a self-applicable instrument for evaluating the diverse parental feeding behaviors of Mexican caregivers based on the theoretical constructs of coercive control, structure, and autonomy support. The scale's content validity achieved significant values when assessed by expert judges, with moderate intensity in congruence (Kendall's W = 0.462; p = 0.000) and clarity (Kendall's W = 0.369; p = 0.001). The participants were 1185 Mexican adults (32.7 ± 7.6 years of age, 97% women, and 90% mothers) responsible for the main meal of at least one child (4.8 ± 3 years old). The data were subdivided randomly for an exploratory factor analysis (n = 581) and a confirmatory factorial analysis (n = 604). The first analysis grouped the items into 11 factors, with an accumulated variance of 63.9%. In the confirmatory analysis, a 10-factor model showed a better fit (CMIN = 1531.5, p < 0.001, CMIN/df = 2.20, RSEA = 0.045, CFI = 0.92, TLI, 0.91, and NFI = 0.87). The factors in this model were (1) the disposition of non-recommended foods, (2) nutritional education, (3) pressure to eat, (4) praise for healthy eating, (5) monitoring of consumption, (6) structured offer of fruits and vegetables, (7) consumption conditioning, (8) overt restriction, (9) guided choices, and (10) covert restriction. The Cronbach's alpha value was 0.816. Therefore, this scale presents good psychometric properties with which to evaluate the frequency of child caregivers' feeding behaviors in the context of ten different feeding practices in Mexico's urban areas and contributes to the knowledge of current practices in the Mexican population. It also evaluates changes resulting from future interventions that promote eating practices that favor the formation of healthy eating habits.

Abstract:Background: University students continue to face health challenges related to a healthy diet and lifestyle. In this context, the measurement of diet and health status is important for institutions interested in health care and promotion. Objective: The objective of this study was to translate into Spanish, evaluate the internal structure, reliability, and factorial invariance of the Diet and Healthy Lifestyle Scale (DEVS) scale. Methods: The participants were 4482 university students aged 18 to 59 years (Mean [M] = 21.32, Standard deviation [SD] = 2.81). Data analysis included exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), internal consistency, and through multigroup analysis, gender invariance was assessed. Results: The results showed the unidimensionality of the DEVS in Spanish and that it provides good reliability indices: Total sample (Ordinal Alpha [ordinal α] = 0.80, Omega [ω] = 0.83, Coefficient H [H] = 0.84), men (ordinal α = 0.79, ω = 0.83, H = 0.81), women (ordinal α = 0.84, ω = 0.85, H = 0.86). Configurational, scalar, and strict metric invariance was verified, indicating that the construct can be evaluated in both men and women. Conclusion: The DEVS is a valid, reliable, and invariable measure to measure the healthy lifestyle in university students.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the factorial structure, psychometric properties and association with anthropometric and clinical variables of the Modified Yale Addiction Scale 2.0 (mYFAS 2.0) in a Spanish university population. Methods: A cross-sectional study of n = 270 university students in Spain was conducted. Variables measured: mYFAS 2.0, Emotional Eater Questionnaire (EEQ), Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT), Pittsburg Sleep Quality index (PSQI) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). In mYFAS 2.0 were performed an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), an Unweight Least Square (ULS), a model fit using comparative fit index (CFI) and nomological validity. Results: EFA revealed that a two-factor structure is the most appropriate in a non-clinical population of Spanish university students. The factors accounted for 18.54% and 16.33% of the variance, and the correlation between them was moderate—0.487 (p < 0.001). This different structure from that reported in the original scale could be derived from the cultural characteristics and intrinsic eating habits of the study population. The correlation matrix reported an inverse association of mYFAS 2.0 with Body Mass Index (BMI). In addition, participants with a BMI below 25 showed a higher mYFAS 2.0 and EEQ score. Conclusions: These results suggest some changes in the psychometric assessment structure of the mYFAS 2.0 in a non-clinical population of university students, as well as the usefulness of this questionnaire to identify individuals with an adequate BMI but with compensatory behaviours that predispose to different eating disorders.

Abstract:(1) Background: Adolescence is a critical period when dietary choices are a major concern. It is therefore important to understand the psychological factors that explain these choices. The objective of this study was to assess the predictive role of perceived self-efficacy for healthy eating and weight regulation on healthy and unhealthy eating behavior through the mediation of autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, amotivation, and perceived barriers to daily mechanisms affecting healthy consumption. (2) Methods: A total of 994 adolescents between 15 and 19 years old from Mexico and Spain participated in the study. The Spanish versions of the healthy eating and weight self-efficacy questionnaire, the behavioral regulation in exercise questionnaire, the barriers to healthy eating scale, and the weight-related behaviors scale questionnaire were used to measure the variables of interest. (3) Results: Mediated serial regression analysis showed that barriers to healthy eating (the daily mechanism of food consumption) reduced healthy eating choices. Healthy eating and weight self-efficacy also showed a positive significant relationship with autonomous motivation and a negative relationship with controlled motivation and amotivation. All the types of motivation showed a positive relationship with barriers to healthy eating. (4) Conclusions: The results point out the need to enhance self-efficacy, promote autonomous motivation, and reduce perceived barriers in young people with respect to healthy eating.

Abstract:Background Adherence to type 2 diabetes management is defined as the extent to which the behaviour of a person matches the one recommended by health care professionals. Control of this disease depends on adherence to diabetes management, which includes monitoring blood glucose levels, adopting a healthy diet, exercising, taking medication, quitting smoking, and undergoing psychosocial care and periodic check-ups. This can also prevent health complications and reduce medical costs. Objective The objective of this study is to validate a culturally appropriate instrument directed towards the Mexican population that measures a patient's level of adherence to their type 2 diabetes mellitus management. Method The study design was cross-sectional. The instrument was applied individually (face to face researcher-assisted survey) by a member of the team. The study sample included 200 participants, which were attended at an outpatient clinic. To evaluate the psychometric validity of the scale we calculated response frequencies, the discrimination of items for extreme groups, the validity, and the internal reliability. The scale of adherence for complete management in patients with type 2 diabetes includes disease monitoring, complication prevention, and social support using questions and answers based on the Likert scale, corresponding to the 5 stages of the transtheoretical model. Main outcome measure The validity and internal reliability of the instrument to measure adherence to type 2 diabetes management, which proved to be justifiable and reliable with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.92 and a total explained variance of 65.03%. Results The instrument was composed of 29 items and 6 factors: adherence to medical Cronbach's alpha = 0.92 and dietary treatment Cronbach's alpha = 0.88, change in dietary habits Cronbach's alpha = 0.89, adherence to physical activity and exercise Cronbach's alpha = 0.84, social support Cronbach's alpha = 0.79, and prevention of complications Cronbach's alpha = 0.70. The instrument obtained a content validity index (I-CVI) of 0.9. Conclusion The proposed instrument, which includes factors that measure adherence in type 2 diabetes mellitus patient's management, using the transtheoretical model of behaviour change to simultaneously identify patient motivation to change their lifestyle, is valid and reliable.

Spanish Linguistic validation of the self-efficacy questionnaire in communication skills

Abstract:Background: Self-efficacy is a critical element of social cognitive theory and refers to a person's estimation of their ability to complete a specific task. Self-efficacy scales evaluate the effectiveness of communication skills training programs. There were not validated scales in Spanish. Aims: to cross-culturally adapt the Self-efficacy questionnaire-12 scale in communication skills in Spanish, evaluate its psychometric properties, and analyse the sample's descriptive characteristics. Design: we conducted an instrumental study to develop evaluation scales. Methods: nursing students were invited to participate (N = 387). The inclusion criteria were: (1) enrolment in first or fourth academic course year; (2) not having received specific training in communication skills; and (3) understanding written and spoken Spanish fluently. A total of 334 undergraduates participated (86.3% response rate); their mean age was 21.9 years (SD = 5.8), 83.2% were female. Results: data showed high internal consistency (0.94) and a good fit to the model. The overall instrument score correlated with the attitude towards communication skills (r = 0.20; p < 0.001). Moderate communication self-efficacy scores were observed in these nursing students. Impact statement: Evaluating communication skills through self-efficacy scales allows teachers to know each student's perceived proficiency to handle communication with users safely and to understand users' needs, giving information about aspects to improve and to establish effective institutional strategies as one of the inherent characteristics of the concept of skills-based evaluation. Conclusions: The Spanish version of the Self-efficacy questionnaire-12 in communication skills was a valid and reliable instrument, essential for evaluating the perceived self-efficacy towards communication in nursing.
Development and psychometric testing of the nutritional and social health habits scale (NutSo-HH): A methodological review of existing tools

Abstract:Habits represent repeated patterns of behavior over time that exert a significant influence on individual health. While specific tools exist to measure individual habits, the number of instruments capable of simultaneously exploring multiple dimensions of health is limited. This research had two main objectives: 1) to examine the literature to find existing tools for evaluating health habits, especially in the Spanish population; 2) through a methodological review, to develop and validate a tool capable of measuring multiple dimensions of health habits. The Nutritional and Social Health Habits Scale (NutSo-HH) was conceived, tested, and refined through pilot testing with cognitive interviews and expert content validation. Construct validity was explored through confirmatory factor analysis and known-group validity, while criterion validity was verified in comparison with the ``Healthy Nutrition Index for the Spanish Population.'' Reliability was assessed using omega coefficients. Confirmatory factor analysis yielded satisfactory fit indices. The final model included two second-order factors (nutritional habits and health habits) and two first-order factors (Mediterranean diet and alcohol consumption). Omega coefficients ranged from 0.521 to 0.815. The NutSo-HH Scale emerges as a valid and reliable tool to assess nutritional and social habits among Spanish young adults. This novel instrument fills a gap in the field, allowing exploration of various health determinants through a single scale and providing support for decision-making in the realm of public health nutrition.
Correlation of executive functions, academic achievement, eating behavior and eating habits in university students of Mexico City

Abstract:Introduction Young adults between 18 and 25 years of age are in an important transitional time and university students are considered vulnerable given that they generally maintain an unhealthy lifestyle characterized by poor diet quality and meal skipping. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between executive functions, academic achievement, eating behavior, eating habits, and BMI in university students. Methods Undergraduate university students (18–25 years) who lived in Mexico City were included in the sample; executive function, eating habits, eating behavior and academic achievement were measured. Results 1903 university students (1,038 women, 865 men), with a mean age of 20.65 years (SD ±1.66), participated in the study. Spearman’s r correlation analysis revealed that there is a significant correlation between all variables of interest, with the most significant correlations found with academic achievement, emotional eating, and eating habits. Discussion Our study confirms previous findings in the association between EF, eating habits, eating behavior, and academic achievement in university students, and also provides a first approach to the association between UP food intake, overall meal skipping (breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner) and EF.

Abstract:Background Information on nutrition literacy of middle schoolers is limited and tools for measuring nutrition literacy of middle schoolers are inadequate. Nutrition literacy has a positive effect on health. Improving children's nutrition literacy can help them to master the necessary nutritional knowledge, develop a healthy lifestyle, and learn to supplement nutrition according to their own needs for healthy growth. Objectives To develop the Chongqing Middle school student Nutrition Literacy Scale (CM-NLS). Methods Three experiments were conducted. A theoretical framework and an initial item pool of CM-NLS were established based on the literature review. And the two-round Delphi method was used to explore the suitable acceptance indicators and items. Item evaluation and reduction were performed using the classical test theory. Then, the items in the final CM-NLS were tested for their validity and reliability amongst 462 middle school students. The construct validity was assessed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The internal consistency reliability and split-half reliability were evaluated using Cronbach's alpha coefficients. Results The final CM-NLS consisting of 52 items that were based on three primary items (functional, interactive and critical) and six sub-items (obtain, understand, apply, interact, medial literacy and critical skill) was developed and validated. EFA suggested six factors explaining 69.44% of the total variance (Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin test = 0.916, Bartlett's test χ2 = 5,854.037, P < 0.001). CFA showed that the model fit the data adequately, with χ2/df = 1.911, root mean square error of approximation = 0.063, goodness-of-fit index = 0.822 and adjusted goodness of fit index = 0.790. The total CM-NLS Cronbach's alpha values of internal consistency and split-half reliability were 0.849 and 0.521, respectively, with reasonable reliability. Conclusions CM-NLS is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing nutrition literacy among middle school students in Chongqing. Specifically, it could be used by practitioners for needs assessment before the implementation of a nutrition education program.

Abstract:A parental child-centered feeding approach is likely to keep children’s biological mechanisms activated while eating, protecting them in an obesogenic context. However, few feeding practice measures assess parents’ behaviors to guide and prompt children to identify and respond appropriately to their signs of hunger and satiety. We aimed to develop and study the reliability, validity, and measurement invariance of a new scale to assess parental feeding practices to promote children’s self-regulation of food intake. To pursue this aim, we conducted two descriptive, cross-sectional, online studies in Portugal in an online format; a total of 536 parents of 2- to 6-year-old children completed the evaluation protocol. Factorial analysis findings support the theoretical organization proposed for the scale. The confirmatory factorial analysis supported a first-order factor structure with two subscales, Prompting for eating self-regulation and Teaching about eating consequences, with eight items in total. Both scales presented good internal consistency and adequate temporal stability, with a significant, positive, and moderate relationship. The results showed metric invariance for the child’s sex. Both types of practices were positively correlated with the child’s enjoyment of food. Prompting for eating self-regulation showed negative associations with parents’ emotional lack of control, children’s satiety responsiveness, slowness in eating, and fussiness. Preliminary studies confirmed both the validity and reliability of the instrument and the adequacy of adopting a self-regulatory approach when assessing child-centered feeding practices. Combining this instrument with others that assess coercive practices can be beneficial to capture ineffective parents’ behaviors on children’s eating self-regulation.
Cultural adaptation and psychometric properties of the scale of attitudes towards conventional cigarettes among Mexican university students

Abstract:Introduction. Tobacco use among youth continues to be a public health problem. Since identifying attitudes can help understand why young people use conventional cigarettes, it is essential to have valid instruments to assess attitudes towards conventional cigarettes. Objective. To culturally adapt and analyze the psychometric properties of the scale of attitudes towards conventional cigarettes in young university students. Method. The study was conducted in two phases: it was culturally adapted to determine its linguistic validity and its psychometric properties were subsequently verified through factor analysis, Cronbach’s Alpha, McDonald’s Omega, and the ROC curve. Results. Participants included 635 university students with a mean age of 23.56 ± 5.89, 56.4% of whom were women. Exploratory analysis identified three components explaining 57.06% of the total variance of the thirteen items with high internal consistency (α = .875). Factor analysis confirmed that three factors had excellent fit indices (χ2/gl = 1.78, IFI = .98, CFI = .98, TLI = .97, RMSEA = .04 (90% CI [.028, .057]), SRMR = .03). Discussion and conclusion. The scale of attitudes towards conventional cigarettes in the Mexican population has high construct validity and reliability.

Development of the General Self-regulation Scale for a Healthy Lifestyle (GSRSHL) among Japanese University Students

Abstract:Abstract Background: A healthy lifestyle of students is an important contributor to both quality of life and longevity. The objective of this study was to develop a new measurement scale, the General Self-regulation Scale for a Healthy Lifestyle (GSRSHL), for university students. Methods: A total of 434 university students (281 male, 153 female) participated in this study. To confirm the validity of the new scale, we examined the relationship among the GSRSHL, the Japanese version of the Brief Self-control Scale, perceived stress, and life satisfaction. Results: The exploratory factor analysis of 15 items yielded two correlated factors: “planning achievement” and “emotional control.” The new scale showed good internal consistency. Confirmatory factor analysis with covariate analysis demonstrated that “planning achievement” and “emotional control” were positively associated with self-regulation and life satisfaction. “Emotional control” related negatively to perceived stress. “Planning achievement” increased the odds of adequate sleep, balanced diet, and physical exercise. “Emotional control” increased the odds of consuming breakfast, having adequate sleep, following a balanced diet, and having less stress. Conclusions: Our study provided evidence of the validity and the applicability of the GSRSHL in Japanese students.
Motivational Influences on Health, Well-Being, and Lifestyle: Validation of the Spanish Version of the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire in Four Health Domains

Abstract:Background: Motivation is a central concept in self-determination theory (SDT). The Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ), which assesses motivation (autonomous, controlled, etc.), has been widely used. However, less is known about its applicability to samples such as college students, who may be at risk of having unhealthy behavior in many areas (including smoking, poor dietary habits, alcohol, or tobacco consumption). As this population is transitioning to adulthood, research is needed to understand motivation and changing health patterns. In addition, the lack of instruments for this population in Spain has made the measurement validation process a priority. The purpose of this psychometric study was to adapt the TSRQ to Spanish college students and to examine its structural and validity across four health domains. Methods: Two samples of Spanish college students (n = 347 and n = 244) agreed to participate in the study. Participants completed a booklet containing measures of motivation, well-being, general health, anxiety, depression, and lifestyle. Results: CFA supported a five-dimensional structure in each domain. Reliability values were also adequate for each questionnaire. Regarding other sources of validity, statistically significant relationships between self-determination, health, and well-being were clearly confirmed, and autonomy was a significant predictor of lifestyle. Conclusions: The Spanish version of the TSRQ showed adequate psychometric properties (dimensionality and internal structure, reliability, and validity evidence regarding its relationships with other constructs) in college students. The Spanish TSRQ will provide future research aimed to understand the motivational role in college students' health behavior and well-being.

Abstract:Background: The Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ) is an instrument employed to measure the generalized ability to regulate behavior. Self-regulation is related to the management of risk behaviors, such as drug abuse or anti-social behaviors. The SRQ has been used in young adult samples. However, some risk behaviors are increasing among adolescents. The aim of this study is to examine the psychometric properties of the SRQ among Spanish adolescents. Methods: 845 high-school Spanish students (N = 443; 52.43% women), from 12 to 17 years old and ranging from the first to the fourth year of studies, completed the SRQ. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was carried out in order to establish structural adequacy. Then, a study of each subscale was conducted using the Rasch model for dimensionality, adjustment of the sample questions, functionality of the response categories, and reliability. Results: While controlling for method effects, the data showed goodness of fit with the four-factor solution and 17 items (Goal setting, Decision making, Learning from mistakes, and Perseverance), and the four sub-scales were unidimensional according to the Rasch analysis. The Rasch model itself was shown to be reliable, but not at the level of persons. This means that the instrument was not sensitive enough to discriminate people with different self-regulation levels. Discussion: These results support the use of the Spanish Short SRQ in adolescent samples. Some suggestions are made to improve the instrument, particularly in its application as a diagnostic tool.

Abstract:In order to understand interest, effort and progress in learning as dispositional and contextual variables in the field of education, the activities and strategies that encourage student motivation have been continuously sought, given that they have a fundamental role in sustainability to promote the improvement of their citizenship skills and the achievement of SDGs 3 (health and well-being) and 4 (quality education) set by the UN. The objective of this study is to validate and adapt the Interest, Effort and Progress in Learning (IEPA) and contextual Student Assistance (AYES) questionnaires in the Chilean adolescent population and thus support the sustainable development SDGs. For this purpose, they were applied to a sample in two phases, first with 339 schoolchildren, and secondly, replicated with 3172 students. For their analysis, a data matrix was constructed with distribution and dispersion tests (mean, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis and range) using the IBM SPSS.27 statistical program. Subsequently, the dimensionality of the scale was studied by applying an exploratory factor analysis with the FACTOR program, version 11, updated in 2021. Finally, a confirmatory factor analysis was performed with the M-PLUS.7.3 program. It is concluded that the instruments provide a method that is valid, reliable, simple to apply and adapted to adolescents, allowing the evaluation of three dispositional variables in students: interest, effort and progression in learning. These data indicate that they have adequate psychometric properties, which allows for a valid and reliable evaluation to contribute to the sustainability of permanent improvement in education.

Factors Related to Diet Quality: A Cross-Sectional Study of 1055 University Students

Abstract:Given that there is only a limited body of evidence available concerning the dietary habits of Spanish university students, the present study assesses the quality of this group’s diet, their adherence to the National Food-Based Dietary Guidelines, and the predictive factors of their diet quality. To do so, a cross-sectional study was performed on a sample of 1055 students. The quality of the participants’ diets was then analysed by using the Spanish Healthy Eating Index, and then their level of compliance was assessed in light of the dietary recommendations put forth by the Spanish Society for Community Nutrition. According to these standards, only 17.4% of the participants had a healthy diet. The level of compliance with the recommendations was poor, highlighting especially the low levels of “fruit” and “vegetables” that they consumed as well as high levels of “cold meats and cuts” and “sweets”. The factors that predicted a worse diet are being male, living alone, low levels of physical activity, smoking, high alcohol intake, leading a sedentary lifestyle, psychological distress, and insomnia (p < 0.005). Furthermore, participants with low or high body weights showed signs of a higher quality diet (p < 0.001). The present findings suggest that a significant proportion of university students ought to change their dietary habits; these also attest to the importance of developing strategies that are directly targeted at university students in order to promote a healthy diet.

Development and Validation of a Scale to Measure Self-efficacy and Self-management in People With Coronary Heart Disease

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Self-management is important in reducing coronary risk factors and in preventing recurrent cardiac events. An enabling factor that promotes self-management among patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) is self-efficacy. However, there is no standardized measure that captures self-efficacy and self-management concurrently in this population.AIM: The authors of this study report on the development and validation of a brief scale to measure self-efficacy and self-management in patients with CHD.METHODS: Scale development and testing comprised (1) item generation, (2) content validity, and (3) pilot testing. The Heart Health Self-Efficacy and Self-Management (HH-SESM) scale includes 2 constructs: self-efficacy and self-management, measured concurrently. Components of the HH-SESM scale consisted of items related to behavioral and coronary risk factor modification. Survey data from 143 participants were used in exploratory factor analyses to test the factorial validity and internal consistency of the scale.RESULTS: Twelve items with the same response format were included in the exploratory factor analysis. The factor analysis revealed a single-factor solution accounting for 36.7% and 36.5% of the variance in scores of the self-efficacy and self-management scales, respectively. The correlation ( r = 0.72, P < .001) between the self-efficacy and self-management constructs indicates moderate convergent validity. Cronbach α of self-efficacy (0.83) and self-management (0.81) constructs showed good internal consistency.CONCLUSION: The HH-SESM is a brief, easy-to-administer, and reliable measure of self-efficacy and self-management in patients with CHD.

Abstract:Abstract Background The objective of this study was to develop a scale to assess eating behaviors of school-aged children (6–12 years old) in China. Methods To develop the scale, a literature review and qualitative interviews were conducted. The draft scale contained 115 items and went through three evaluations among three groups of caregivers ( n = 140, 400, 700) selected from suburban and urban kindergartens in Xi’an, Hanzhong, and Yanan, China, from March 2017 to October 2018. The psychometric properties of the scale were assessed using exploratory, confirmatory factor analysis, and variability analysis. Results The final scale consisted of 46 items across eight dimensions including food fussiness, satiety responsiveness, food responsiveness, bad eating habits, susceptible diet, restrained eating, enjoyment of food, and junk food addiction. The total cumulative variance contribution rate was 52.16%. The scale and dimensions' Cronbach’s α coefficients, Guttman split-half reliability, and test- retest reliability were all above 0.65. The fitting indices for the confirmatory factor analysis were all close to 1. The scores for education of caregiver, family structure, and the body mass index of children were different among dimensions and groups, thus suggesting good discriminative utility. Conclusions All of the results indicated that the scale has good reliability and construct validity for evaluating the eating behaviors of school-aged children in China.
