Abstract:Within the numerically exact solution to the Dicke model proposed previously, we study the quantum criticality in terms of the ground-state (GS) energy, fidelity, and the order parameter. The finite size scaling analysis for the average fidelity susceptibility (FS) and second derivative of GS energy are performed. The correlation length exponent is obtained to be nu=2/3, which is the same as that in Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model obtained previously, suggesting the same universality. It is observed that average FS and second derivative of GS energy show similar critical behavior, demonstrating the intrinsic relation in the Dicke model. The scaling behavior for the order parameter and the singular part of the GS energy at the critical point are also analyzed and the obtained exponents are consistent with the previous scaling hypothesis in 1/N expansion scheme.

Abstract:We adapt White's density matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) to the direct study of critical phenomena. We use the DMRG to generate transformations in the space of coupling constants. We postulate that a study of density matrix eigenvalues leads to a natural identification of renormalised blocks, operators and Hamiltonians. We apply the scheme to the phase transition in the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. In the simplest case where the two most probable states in odd sized blocks are used to construct approximate renormalisation group transformations, we find qualitative improvement upon the standard real space renormalisation group method for the thermal exponent $\nu$.

Abstract:An introduction into the theory of boundary critical phenomena and the application of the field-theoretical renormalization group method to these is given. The emphasis is on a discussion of surface critical behavior at bulk critical points of magnets, binary alloys, and fluids. Yet a multitude of related phenomena are mentioned. The most important distinct surface universality classes that may occur for a given universality class of bulk critical behavior are described, and the respective boundary conditions of the associated field theories are discussed. The short-distance singularities of the order-parameter profile in the diverse asymptotic regimes are surveyed.

Critical dynamics in a real-time formulation of the functional renormalization group

Abstract:We present first calculations of critical spectral functions of the relaxational Models A, B, and C in the Halperin-Hohenberg classification using a real-time formulation of the functional renormalization group (FRG). We revisit the prediction by Son and Stephanov that the linear coupling of a conserved density to the non-conserved order parameter of Model A gives rise to critical Model-B dynamics. We formulate both 1-loop and 2-loop self-consistent expansion schemes in the 1PI vertex functions as truncations of the effective average action suitable for real-time applications, and analyze in detail how the different critical dynamics are properly incorporated in the framework of the FRG on the closed-time path. We present results for the corresponding critical spectral functions, extract the dynamic critical exponents for Models A, B, and C, in two and three spatial dimensions, respectively, and compare the resulting values with recent results from the literature.

Fractal Quantum Phase Transitions: Critical Phenomena Beyond Renormalization

Abstract:We identify a quantum critical point with fractal symmetry whose effective theory eludes the renormalization group framework. We consider the Newman-Moore model with three-body interaction subjected to an external transverse field, which exhibits a Kramers-Wannier type self-duality and a fractal $Z_2$ symmetry with Ising charge conserved on a fractal subset of sites, i.e., on Sierpinski gaskets. Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we identify a continuous quantum phase transition between a phase with spontaneous fractal symmetry breaking and a paramagnetic phase. This phase transition is characterized by the emergence of a fractal scaling dimension $d=\ln(3)/\ln(2)$ at the quantum critical point, where the power-law exponent of the correlation function is related to the fractal dimension of the Sierpinski triangle. We develop a field theory to elucidate such quantum criticality and denote the fractal scaling as a subsequence of UV-IR mixing, where the low energy modes at the critical point are manipulated by short-wavelength physics due to the fractal symmetry.

Dynamic critical behavior of the chiral phase transition from the real-time functional renormalization group

Abstract:In the chiral limit the complicated many-body dynamics around the second-order chiral phase transition of two-flavor QCD can be understood by appealing to universality. We present a novel formulation of the real-time functional renormalization group that describes the stochastic hydrodynamic equations of motion for systems in the same dynamic universality class, which corresponds to Model G in the Halperin-Hohenberg classification. Our approach preserves all relevant symmetries of such systems with reversible mode couplings. We show that the calculations indeed produce the non-trivial value $z=d/2$ for the dynamic critical exponent, where $d$ is the number of spatial dimensions. From the momentum and temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient of the conserved charge densities, we extract the dimensionless universal scaling function.

Abstract:As part of a chapter for a book titled "50 years of the renormalization group", dedicated to the memory of Michael E. Fisher, edited by Amnon Aharony, Ora Entin-Wohlman, David Huse, and Leo Radzihovsky, I review a class of novel ordered states of "critical matter", that exhibit strongly fluctuating universal power-law orders, controlled by an infra-red attractive, non-Gaussian fixed point. I will illustrate how RG methods pioneered by Wilson and Fisher can be used to deduce critical phenomenology of such critical phases, resembling that of a critical point of second order phase transitions, but requiring no fine tuning.

Entanglement entropy of the long-range Dyson hierarchical model

Abstract:We study the ground state entanglement entropy of the quantum Dyson hierarchical spin chain in which the interaction decays algebraically with the distance as $r^{-1-\sigma}$. We exploit the real-space renormalisation group solution which gives the ground-state wave function in the form of a tree tensor network and provides a manageable recursive expression for the reduced density matrix of the renormalised ground state. Surprisingly, we find that at criticality the entanglement entropy obeys an area law, as opposite to the logarithmic scaling of short-range critical systems and of other non-hierarchical long-range models. We provide also some analytical results in the limit of large and small $\sigma$ that are tested against the numerical solution of the recursive equations.

Abstract:The quantum-field renormalization group method is one of the most efficient and powerful tools for studying critical and scaling phenomena in interacting many-particle systems. The multiloop Feynman diagrams underpin the specific implementation of the renormalization group program. In recent years, multiloop computation has had a significant breakthrough in both static and dynamic models of critical behavior. In the paper, we focus on the state-of-the-art computational techniques for critical dynamic diagrams and the results obtained with their help. The generic nature of the evaluated physical observables in a wide class of field models is manifested in the asymptotic character of perturbation expansions. Thus, the Borel resummation of series is required to process multiloop results. Such a procedure also enables one to take high-order contributions into consideration properly. The paper outlines the resummation framework in dynamic models and the circumstances in which it can be useful. An important resummation criterion is the properties of the higher-order asymptotics of the perturbation theory. In static theories, these properties are determined by the method of instanton analysis. A similar approach is applicable in critical dynamics models. We describe the calculation of these asymptotics in dynamical models and present the results of the corresponding resummation.

Renormalization group crossover in the critical dynamics of field theories with mode coupling terms

Abstract:Motivated by the collective behaviour of biological swarms, we study the critical dynamics of field theories with coupling between order parameter and conjugate momentum in the presence of dissipation. By performing a dynamical renormalization group calculation at one loop, we show that the violation of momentum conservation generates a crossover between a conservative yet IR-unstable fixed point, characterized by a dynamic critical exponent $z=d/2$, and a dissipative IR-stable fixed point with $z=2$. Interestingly, the two fixed points have different upper critical dimensions. The interplay between these two fixed points gives rise to a crossover in the critical dynamics of the system, characterized by a crossover exponent $\kappa=4/d$. Such crossover is regulated by a conservation length scale, $\mathcal R_0$, which is larger the smaller the dissipation: beyond $\mathcal R_0$ the dissipative fixed point dominates, while at shorter distances dynamics is ruled by the conservative fixed point and critical exponent, a behaviour which is all the more relevant in finite-size systems with weak dissipation. We run numerical simulations in three dimensions and find a crossover between the exponents $z=3/2$ and $z=2$ in the critical slowing down of the system, confirming the renormalization group results. From the biophysical point of view, our calculation indicates that in finite-size biological groups mode-coupling terms in the equation of motion can significantly change the dynamical critical exponents even in the presence of dissipation, a step towards reconciling theory with experiments in natural swarms. Moreover, our result provides the scale within which fully conservative Bose-Einstein condensation is a good approximation in systems with weak symmetry-breaking terms violating number conservation, as quantum magnets or photon gases.

On the dynamics of a family of renormalization transformations

Abstract:We study the family of renormalization transformations of the generalized $d$--dimensional diamond hierarchical Potts model in statistical mechanic and prove that their Julia sets and non-escaping loci are always connected, where $d\geq 2$. In particular, we prove that their Julia sets can never be a Sierpiński carpet if the parameter is real. We show that the Julia set is a quasicircle if and only if the parameter lies in the unbounded capture domain of these models. Moreover, the asymptotic formula of the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set is calculated as the parameter tends to infinity.

Critical dynamics of Model H within the real-time fRG approach

Abstract:The critical dynamics of Model H with a conserved order parameter coupled to a transverse momentum density which describes the gas-liquid or binary-fluid transitions is investigated within the functional renormalization group approach formulated on the closed time path. According to the dynamic scaling analysis, Model H and QCD critical end point belong to the same dynamic universality class in the critical region. The higher-order correction of the transport coefficient $\bar\lambda$ and shear viscosity $\bar\eta$ arising from mode-couplings are obtained by calculating the two-point correlation functions. The flow equation of a dimensionless coupling constant for nondissipative interactions is derived to look for the fixed-point solution of the system. The scaling relation between the critical exponent of the transport coefficient and that of the shear viscosity is estimated. Finally, the dynamic critical exponent $z$ is obtained as a function of the spatial dimension $d$.

Universal finite-size scaling in high-dimensional critical phenomena

Abstract:We present a new unified theory of critical finite-size scaling for lattice statistical mechanical models with periodic boundary conditions above the upper critical dimension. The universal finite-size scaling is inherited from the scaling of the system unwrapped to the infinite lattice. A Wilsonian renormalisation group analysis determines a universal profile for the susceptibility and two-point function plateau. Our theory is based on recent mathematically rigorous results for linear and branched polymers, multi-component spin systems, and percolation. Both short-range and long-range interactions are included. With free boundary conditions, the universal scaling applies at a pseudocritical point.

New renormalization group study of the 3-state Potts model and related statistical models

Abstract:The critical behavior of three-state statistical models invariant under the full symmetry group $S_3$ and its dependence on space dimension have been a matter of interest and debate. In particular, the phase transition of the 3-state Potts model in three dimensions is believed to be of the first order, without a definitive proof of absence of scale invariance in three-dimensional field theory with $S_3$ symmetry. This scale invariance should appear as a non-trivial fixed point of the renormalization group, which has not been found. Our new search, with the non-perturbative renormalization group, finds such a fixed point, as a bifurcation from the trivial fixed point at the critical space dimension $d=10/3$, which extends continuously to $d=3$. It does not correspond to a second-order phase transition of the 3-state Potts model, but is interesting in its own right. In particular, it shows how the $\varepsilon$-expansion can fail.

Abstract:Critical transition points between symmetry-broken phases are characterized as fixed points in the renormalization group (RG) theory. We show that, following the standard Wilsonian procedure that traces out the large momentum modes, this well known fact can break down in non-Hermitian systems. Based on non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Hegger (SSH)-type models, we propose a real-space decimation scheme to study the criticality between the topological and trivial phase. We provide concrete examples and an analytic proof to show that the real-space scheme perfectly overcomes the insufficiency of the standard method, especially in the sense that it always preserves the system at criticality as fixed points under RG. The proposed method can also greatly simplify the search of critical points for complicated non-Hermitian models by ruling out the irrelevant operators. These results pave the way towards more advanced RG-based techniques for the interacting non-Hermitian quantum systems.

Abstract:The hierarchical graphene model is a simple toy model which is useful to understand the mechanics of renormalization group flows in super-renormalizable systems. It is based on a model of interacting electrons in graphene, for which the renormalization group analysis was carried out by Giuliani and Mastropietro. The analysis of the hierarchical graphene model is significantly simpler than graphene, but one should not expect it to produce good quantitative results about real-world graphene. Rather, the hierarchical model is useful as a teaching tool to understand the core concepts of renormalization group techniques. In this paper, we will first introduce a model for electrons in graphene and set it up for a renormalization group treatment by introducing its Grassmann representation and scale decomposition. We then define the hierarchical graphene model and study it's renormalization group flow. From a renormalization group point of view, graphene is quite simple: it is super-renormalizable. As an illustration of a more complicated system, we repeat the analysis for the Kondo model, which is a strongly coupled model with a non-trivial fixed point.

Critical fluctuations at a many-body exceptional point

Abstract:Critical phenomena arise ubiquitously in various context of physics, from condensed matter, high energy physics, cosmology, to biological systems, and consist of slow and long-distance fluctuations near a phase transition or critical point. Usually, these phenomena are associated with the softening of a massive mode. Here we show that a novel, non-Hermitian-induced mechanism of critical phenomena that do not fall into this class can arise in the steady state of generic driven-dissipative many-body systems with coupled binary order parameters such as exciton-polariton condensates and driven-dissipative Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential. The criticality of this ``critical exceptional point'' is attributed to the coalescence of the collective eigenmodes that convert all the thermal-and-dissipative-noise activated fluctuations to the Goldstone mode, leading to anomalously giant phase fluctuations that diverge at spatial dimensions $d\le 4$. Our dynamic renormalization group analysis shows that this gives rise to a strong-coupling fixed point at dimensions as high as $d<8$ associated with a new universality class beyond the classification by Hohenberg and Halperin, indicating how anomalously strong the many-body corrections are at this point. We find that this anomalous enhancement of many-body correlation is due to the appearance of a sound mode at the critical exceptional point despite the system's dissipative character.

Abstract:We survey the recent progress made in understanding non equilibrium dynamics in closed random systems. The emphasis is on the important role played by concepts from quantum information theory and on the application of systematic renormalization group methods to capture universal aspects of the dynamics. Finally we outline some outstanding open questions, which includee the description of the many-body localization phase transition and identifying physical systems that will allow systematic experimental study of these phenomena.

Abstract:We use a novel real-time formulation of the functional renormalization group (FRG) for dynamical systems with reversible mode couplings to study Model H, the conjectured dynamic universality class of the QCD critical point. We emphasize the structural similarities with Model G, conjectured to be the dynamic universality class of the chiral phase transition in the limit of two massless quark flavors. Importantly, our formulation of the real-time FRG preserves all relevant symmetries throughout the FRG flow which, e.g., guarantees the non-renormalization of the reversible mode couplings, as but one exact result. We derive non-perturbative RG flow equations for the kinetic coefficients of both, Model G and H, in parallel, and discuss commonalities and differences in the resulting fixed-point structure and dynamic critical exponents, such as weak-scaling relations which hold in either case versus the characteristic strong scaling of Model G which is absent in Model H.
