Abstract:Recent progress in the design and fabrication of artificial two-dimensional (2D) materials paves the way for the experimental realization of electron systems moving on complex geometries, such as plane fractals. In this work, we calculate the quantum conductance of a 2D electron gas roaming on a Sierpinski carpet (SC), i.e., a plane fractal with Hausdorff dimension intermediate between 1 and 2. We find that the fluctuations of the quantum conductance are a function of energy with a fractal graph, whose dimension can be chosen by changing the geometry of the SC. This behavior is independent of the underlying lattice geometry.
Quantum carpets from Gaussian sum theory

Abstract:In many closed quantum systems, an interesting phenomenon, called quantum carpet, can be observed, where the evolution of wave function exhibits a carpet-like pattern. The mechanism of quantum carpet is similar to the classical interference pattern of light. Although the origin of quantum carpets has been studied previously, there are still many interesting details worth exploring. Here, we presented a unified framework for a simultaneous analyzing on three features of quantum carpets, namely full revival, fractional revival and diagonal canal. For fractional revival, a complete formula is presented to explain its generation through "Gaussian sum theory", in which all the essential features, including the phases and amplitudes, of this phenomenon could be captured analytically. Moreover, we also revealed the relations between the interference terms of the diagonal canals and their geometric interpretations, providing a better understanding in the formation of diagonal canals.

Abstract:The term "quantum carpet" can be observed in many closed quantum systems, where the evolution of a wave function exhibits a carpet-like pattern. Abstract:Quantum carpets- in position and momentum space- woven by the self-interference of de Broglie wave of an atom or an electron, trapped in an infinitely deep potential well, are explained. The recurrence of self-similar structures in designs of these carpets mimics the phenomena of quantum revivals and fractional revivals. We identify fractional revivals of various order by means of these space-time and momentum-time interference patterns.

Abstract:Strongly interacting many-body system of bosons exhibiting the quantum carpet pattern is investigated exactly by using Gaudin solutions. We show that this highly coherent design usually present in noninteracting, single-body scenarios gets destroyed by weak-to-moderate interatomic interactions in an ultracold bosonic gas trapped in a box potential. However, it becomes revived in a very strongly interacting regime, when the system undergoes fermionization. We track the whole single- to many-body crossover, providing an analysis of de- and rephasing present in the system.

Free-Space Entangled Quantum Carpets

Abstract:The Talbot effect in quantum physics is known to produce intricate patterns in the probability distribution of a particle, known as "quantum carpets", corresponding to the revival and replication of the initial wave function. Recently, it was shown that one can encode a $D$-level qudit, in such a way that the Talbot effect can be used to process the $D$-dimensional quantum information [Far\'ıas et al, PRA (2015)]. Here we introduce a scheme to produce free-propagating "entangled quantum carpets" with pairs of photons produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. First we introduce an optical device that can be used to synthesize arbitrary superposition states of Talbot qudits. Sending spatially entangled photon pairs through a pair of these devices produces an entangled pair of qudits. As an application, we show how the Talbot effect can be used to test a $D$-dimensional Bell inequality. Numerical simulations show that violation of the Bell inequality depends strongly on the amount of spatial correlation in the initial two-photon state. We briefly discuss how our optical scheme might be adapted to matter wave experiments.

Optical Conductivity of a Quantum Electron Gas in a Sierpinski Carpet

Abstract:Recent advances in nanofabrication methods have made it possible to create complex two-dimensional artificial structures, such as fractals, where electrons can be confined. The optoelectronic and plasmonic properties of these exotic quantum electron systems are largely unexplored. In this paper, we calculate the optical conductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas in a Sierpinski carpet (SC). The SC is a paradigmatic fractal that can be fabricated in a planar solid-state matrix by means of an iterative procedure. We show that the optical conductivity as a function of frequency (i.e., the optical spectrum) converges, at finite temperature, as a function of the fractal iteration. The calculated optical spectrum features sharp peaks at frequencies determined by the smallest geometric details at a given fractal iteration. Each peak is due to excitations within sets of electronic state-pairs, whose wave functions are characterized by quantum confinement in the SC at specific length scales, related to the frequency of the peak.

The quantization of Hall conductivity disappears when we increase the depth of the fractal, and the Hall conductivity is no more proportional to the Chern number. Nevertheless, these quantities behave in a similar way showing some reminiscence of a topological nature of the Hall conductivity. We also study numerically the bulk-edge correspondence and find that the edge states become less manifested when the depth of Sierpinski carpet is increased.
Quantum Information Processing by Weaving Quantum Talbot Carpets

Abstract:Single photon interference due to passage through a periodic grating is considered in a novel proposal for processing D-dimensional quantum systems (quDits) encoded in the spatial degrees of freedom of light. We show that free space propagation naturally implements basic single quDit gates by means of the Talbot effect: an intricate time-space carpet of light in the near field diffraction regime. Adding a diagonal phase gate, we show that a complete set of single quDit gates can be implemented. We then introduce a spatially-dependent beam splitter that allows implementation of controlled operations between two quDits. A new form of universal quantum information processing can then be implemented with linear optics and ancilla photons. Though we consider photons, our scheme should be directly applicable to a number of other physical systems. Interpretation of the Talbot effect as a quantum logic operation provides a beautiful and interesting way to visualize quantum computation through wave propagation and interference.

Abstract:Fractals, a fascinating mathematical concept made popular in the eighties, remained for decades a beautiful scientific curiosity mainly. With the tremendous advances in nanofabrication techniques, such as nanolithography, it has become possible to design self-similar materials with fine structures down to nanometer scale. Here, we investigate the effects of self similarity on quantum electronic transport in graphene Sierpinski carpets. We find that a gap opens up in the electron spectrum in the middle of which lies a flat band of zeros energy modes. Although these states have a zero velocity, a supermetallic phase is found at the neutrality point. For Fermi energy located in the valence/conduction band and in the presence of a small inelastic scattering the system stays metallic and the transport is found strongly anisotropic.

Abstract:Quantum physics modeling is technically complex and often non-descriptive. This article presents some approaches how quantum physical ideas can be represented by haptic models. For this purpose, models made from 3D printers, models made from paper strips, and models made from textiles are compared. A novelty is the use of zippers instead of paper strips, which can be easily ''cut'' and ''glued'' together. The models have been developed primarily with the aim of conveying and visualizing topological ideas with little basic mathematical knowledge.

The quantum magic of fermionic Gaussian states

Abstract:We introduce an efficient method to quantify nonstabilizerness in fermionic Gaussian states, overcoming the long-standing challenge posed by their extensive entanglement. Using a perfect sampling scheme based on an underlying determinantal point process, we compute the Stabilizer Rényi Entropies (SREs) for systems with hundreds of qubits. Benchmarking on random Gaussian states with and without particle conservation, we reveal an extensive leading behavior equal to that of Haar random states, with logarithmic subleading corrections. We support these findings with analytical calculations for a set of related quantities, the participation entropies in the computational (or Fock) basis, for which we derive an exact formula. Applying the sampling algorithm to a two-dimensional free-fermionic topological model, we uncover a sharp transition in magic at the topological phase boundary, highlighting the power of our approach in exploring different phases of quantum many-body systems, even in higher dimensions.

Abstract:Discrete-time Quantum Walks (QWs) are transportation models of single quantum particles over a lattice. Their evolution is driven through causal and local unitary operators. QWs are a powerful tool for quantum simulation of fundamental physics as some of them have a continuum limit converging to well-known physics partial differential equations, such as the Dirac or the Schrödinger equation. In this work, we show how to recover the Dirac equation in (3+1)-dimensions with a QW evolving in a tetrahedral space. This paves the way to simulate the Dirac equation on a curved spacetime. This also suggests an ordered scheme for propagating matter over a spin network, of interest in Loop Quantum Gravity where matter propagation has remained an open problem.

Abstract:This is a non-standard exposition of the main notions of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory including some recent results. It is based on the algebraic approach where the starting point is a star-algebra and on the geometric approach where the starting point is a convex set of states. Standard formulas for quantum probabilities are derived from decoherence. This derivation allows us to go beyond quantum theory in the geometric approach. Particles are defined as elementary excitations of the ground state (and quasiparticles as elementary excitations of any translation invariant state). The conventional scattering matrix does not work for quasiparticles (and even for particles if the theory does not have particle interpretation). The analysis of scattering in these cases is based on the notion of inclusive scattering matrix, closely related to inclusive cross-sections. It is proven that the conventional scattering matrix can be expressed in terms of Green functions (LSZ formula) and the inclusive scattering matrix can be expressed in terms of generalized Green functions that appear in the Keldysh formalism of non-equilibrium statistical physics. The derivation of the expression of the evolution operator and other physical quantities in terms of functional integrals is based on the notion of the symbol of an operator; these arguments can be applied also in the geometric approach. The notion of inclusive scattering matrix makes sense in the geometric approach (but it seems that one cannot give a definition of the conventional scattering matrix in this situation). The geometric approach is used to show that quantum mechanics and its generalizations can be considered as classical theories where our devices can measure only a part of observables.

Quantum Many-Body Scars: A Quasiparticle Perspective

Abstract:Weakly interacting quasiparticles play a central role in the low-energy description of many phases of quantum matter. At higher energies, however, quasiparticles cease to be well-defined in generic many-body systems due to a proliferation of decay channels. In this review, we discuss the phenomenon of quantum many-body scars, which can give rise to certain species of stable quasiparticles throughout the energy spectrum. This goes along with a set of unusual non-equilibrium phenomena including many-body revivals and non-thermal stationary states. We provide a pedagogical exposition of this physics via a simple yet comprehensive example, that of a spin-1 XY model. We place our discussion in the broader context of symmetry-based constructions of many-body scar states, projector embeddings, and Hilbert space fragmentation. We conclude with a summary of experimental progress and theoretical puzzles.

Abstract:The concept of positively and negatively compatible null vectors arises in the study of Clifford geometric algebras with a Lorentz-Minkowski metric. In previous works, the basic properties of such algebras have been set down in terms of a new principle of quantum duality. In the present work, the same structure is studied in terms of real and complex quantum integers, which generalize the real and complex number systems. It seems natural to identify a qubit as a pair of compatible null vectors; the up state of the qubit being their sum, and the down state being their difference. Basic identities are developed to make calculations routine, and two different representations of the symmetric group are given.

Abstract:We study quantum entanglement and its relation to transport in a non-equilibrium interacting double dot system connected to electronic baths. The dynamical properties in the non-interacting regime are studied using an exact numerical approach whereas the steady state properties are obtained following the well-known non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) approach. By means of mutual information and concurrence we explore the connection between the quantum correlations in the system and the current flowing through the dots. It is observed that entanglement between the dots is heavily influenced by the degeneracy or the lack thereof, of the dot levels. In the non-degenerate case, the concurrence falls sharply when the applied bias crosses a certain critical value. In contrast when the dot energy levels are degenerate, the concurrence reaches a very high asymptotic value of 1/2. When interactions are switched on, the degeneracy is lifted, and once again concurrence falls to zero beyond a critical value of the applied bias. Lastly it is observed that the concurrence can be made to reach almost the value of 1.0 if the chemical potential in both baths are made very large (while keeping the sign the same) provided the dot levels are kept degenerate within the non-interacting limit. A combination of NEGF method, brute-force numerics and asymptotics are employed to corroborate our findings.

Abstract:In a letter to Born, Einstein wrote: "Quantum mechanics is certainly imposing. But an inner voice tells me that it is not yet the real thing. The theory says a lot, but does not really bring us any closer to the secret of the old one. I, at any rate, am convinced that He does not throw dice." In this paper we take seriously Einstein's famous metaphor, and show that we can gain considerable insight into quantum mechanics by doing something as simple as rolling dice. More precisely, we show how to perform measurements on a single die, to create typical quantum interference effects, and how to connect (entangle) two identical dice, to maximally violate Bell's inequality.
