Abstract:The interfacial stability between the cathode and electrolyte is an essential issue in the development of high-energy-density and long-life lithium-ion batteries. The deterioration of capacity dominated by Mn dissolution makes LiMn2O4 a representative case for studying the evolution of interfaces. Here, we use the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) method to simulate the interface reaction between the ethylene carbonate (EC) molecules and the (110) surface of completely delithiated LiMn2O4 where most severe Mn dissolution is observed in the experiment. It is found that the intrinsic oxygen loss on the surface will drive the initial migration of surface Mn atoms to the electrolyte while reducing them. The EC molecules will decompose after transferring electrons to the surface Mn atoms, and its decomposition products further promote the Mn dissolution. In addition, oxygen loss and EC decomposition are in a competitive relationship when transferring electrons to the surface Mn atoms. Decoupling Capacity Fade and Voltage Decay of Li-rich Mn-rich Cathodes by Tailoring Surface Reconstruction Pathways

Abstract:Exploiting oxygen anion redox in Li-/Mn-rich layered oxides (LMR-NMCs) offers the highest capacity among cathode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its long-term utilization is challenging due to continuous voltage and capacity decay caused by irreversible phase transitions involving cation disordering and oxygen release. While extensive studies have revealed the thermodynamic origin of cation disordering, the mechanisms of oxygen loss and consequent lattice densification remain elusive. Moreover, mixed spinel-rocksalt nanodomains formed after cycling complicate the degradation mechanism. Herein, we reveal a strong correlation between phase transition pathways and oxygen stability at the particle surface in LMR-NMCs through a comparative study using electrolyte modification. By tailoring surface reconstruction pathways, we control overall phase and electrochemistry evolution mechanisms. Removing polar ethylene carbonate from the electrolyte significantly suppresses irreversible oxygen loss at the cathode-electrolyte interface, preferentially promoting the in-situ layered-to-spinel phase transition while avoiding typical rocksalt phase formation. The in-situ formed spinel-stabilized surface enhances charge transfer kinetics through three-dimensional ion channels, maintaining reversible Ni, Mn, and O redox capability over 700 cycles, as revealed by electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. Deep delithiation and lithiation enabled by the surface spinel phase accelerate the bulk layered-to-spinel phase transition, inducing thermodynamic voltage fade without capacity loss. Conversely, conventional electrolytes induce layered-to-rocksalt surface reconstruction, impeding charge transfer reactions, which causes simultaneous capacity and (apparent) voltage fades. Our work decouples thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of voltage decay in LMR-NMCs, establishing the correlation between surface reconstruction, bulk phase transition, and the electrochemistry of high-capacity cathodes that exploit cation and anion redox couples. This study highlights the significance of electrochemical interface stabilization for advancing Mn-rich cathode chemistries in future LIBs.

Abstract:Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials used in Li-ion batteries show ultra-high capacity due to the favorable oxygen redox behavior induced by activation of Li2MnO3. However, structural degradation associated with oxygen loss and transition metal migration occurs due to excessive oxygen redox on the surface, which is the main origin of the low coulombic efficiency, capacity fade, and voltage decay, which limit the widespread application of this high-capacity material. In this study, the underlying mechanism of tuning the surface thermodynamic stability of the Li2MnO3 model material was systematically investigated. The results showed that a defective graphene coating can effectively stabilize surface oxygen by modification of the potential energy surface, while reducing Mn migration and increasing the diffusivity of Li ions. Theoretical calculations predicted an improvement in the electrochemical performance, which was confirmed by experimental results. These findings may provide a novel strategy for increasing the surface thermodynamic stability of electrode materials.
First-principles Characterization of Surface Degradation of LiNiO2 Cathodes

Abstract:Nickel-based layered oxides offer an attractive platform for the development of energy-dense cobalt-free cathodes for lithium-ion batteries but suffer from degradation via oxygen gas release during electrochemical cycling. While such degradation has previously been characterized phenomenologically with experiments, an atomic-scale understanding of the reactions that take place at the cathode surface has been lacking. Here, we develop a first-principles methodology for the prediction of the surface reconstructions of intercalation electrode particles as a function of the temperature and state of charge. We report the surface phase diagrams of the LiNiO2(001) and LiNiO2(104) surfaces and identify surface structures that are likely visited during charge and discharge. Our calculations indicate that both surfaces experience oxygen loss during the first charge, resulting in irreversible changes to the surface structures. At the end of charge, the surface Ni atoms migrate into tetrahedral sites, from which they further migrate into Li vacancies during discharge, leading to Li/Ni mixed discharged surface phases. Further, the impact of the temperature and voltage range during cycling on the charge/discharge mechanism is discussed. The present study thus provides insight into the initial stages of cathode surface degradation and lies the foundation for the computational design of cathode materials that are stable against oxygen release.
Bulk and surface reconstructed Li-rich Mn-based cathode material for lithium ion batteries with eliminating irreversible capacity loss

Abstract:Bulk and surface reconstructed Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 cathode materials induced by spinel embedment and γ-MnO2 modification were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. The results of XRD, XPS and SEM confirmed the introduction of γ-MnO2. The analysis of XPS, TEM images, dQ/dV curves and CV curves demonstrated that a spinel phase is embedded synchronously in the bulk of layered structure during the process of γ-MnO2 modification. The results of charge-discharge profiles and dQ/dV curves demonstrated the irreversible discharge capacity loss in the initial cycle is reduced with the introduction and collaboration of spinel and γ-MnO2. Namely, the initial coulombic efficiency is improved up to approximately 100%. Furthermore, the specific discharge capacity and rate performances are enhanced by a structure breakthrough for Li+ transport through blending with electrochemical active spinel-phase and γ-MnO2. In addition, the capacity retention of the material is enhanced from 64% up to 85% after 200 cycles. The main reasons are that the surface of Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 is stabilized and the phase transformation from surface to bulk is mitigated under the protection of γ-MnO2 coating layer.

Abstract:High-voltage spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) is considered to be a promising cathode material for electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Nevertheless, the structural transformation under a deep discharge voltage is still ambiguity. Herein, we report detailed studies of structural change of LNMO cathode under a wide voltage range of 5.0–1.5 V cycling by using synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy, aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The fundamental findings demonstrate that LNMO would undergo a complex phase transformation from cubic to tetragonal during deep discharge to a voltage lower than 3 V. It gives rise to a further reduction of Mn4+ to Mn3+ and this serious structural distortion leads to the formation of Li2Mn2O4-type tetragonal phase with space group of I41/amd, which is also confirmed by XANES simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Meanwhile, migration of Ni ions toward the surface from bulk lattice, leading to the rock-salt NiO phase formation with a space group of Fm-3 m. Finally, these observed evolutions on the surface are associated to the fast capacity fading for LNMO under such a wide voltage range. This work provides insight into understanding the capacity degradation mechanism of spinel cathodes and would inspire us to further design high-performance cathode materials for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Oxygen-anion redox in lithium-rich layered oxides can boost the capacity of lithium-ion battery cathodes. However, the over-oxidation of oxygen at highly charged states aggravates irreversible structure changes and deteriorates cycle performance. Here, we investigate the mechanism of surface degradation caused by oxygen oxidation and the kinetics of surface reconstruction. Considering Li 2 MnO 3 , we show through density functional theory calculations that a high energy orbital (lO 2 p ’ ) at under-coordinated surface oxygen prefers over-oxidation over bulk oxygen, and that surface oxygen release is then kinetically favored during charging. We use a simple strategy of turning under-coordinated surface oxygen into polyanionic (SO 4 ) 2− , and show that these groups stabilize the surface of Li 2 MnO 3 by depressing gas release and side reactions with the electrolyte. Experimental validation on Li 1.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 O 2 shows that sulfur deposition enhances stability of the cathode with 99.0% capacity remaining (194 mA h g −1 ) after 100 cycles at 1 C. Our work reveals a promising surface treatment to address the instability of highly charged layered cathode materials.

Screening LiMn 2 O 4 Surface Modification Schemes under Theoretical Guidance

Abstract:Mn dissolution is one of the most important factors for the failure of LiMn2O4 batteries. Doping has been widely adopted in the modification of LiMn2O4 cathodes; however, there is still a lack of theoretical guidance on screening the dopants. Here, through first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated the effects of all 3, 4d transition metals as well as Mg, Ca, Sr, Al, Ga, and In on the surface oxygen stability of LiMn2O4 cathodes, which has been proved to be correlated with the stability of the surface Mn atoms. Six competitive dopants, namely Nb, Ru, Mo, V, Tc, and Ti, were screened out. Besides, for three dopants in low valence states (Mg, Cu, and Zn), their Li-site doping can more effectively stabilize the surface oxygen atoms compared with Mn-site doping. Finally, we synthesized LiMn2O4 samples with Mg, Mo, and Nb surface doping to validate the rationality of the computational results. We found that particle morphology should also be considered in addition to surface oxygen stability for controlling Mn dissolution. Moreover, the electrochemical performance of LiMn2O4 batteries is a more complex issue and cannot be solely regulated by Mn dissolution. During the experiments, we have explored novel efficient binary chromogenic reagents for ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy analysis that can be used for rapid and low-cost Mn dissolution detection. This work provides a paradigm for the systematic design of the surface modification of the LiMn2O4 cathode under theoretical guidance.

Abstract:Electrode surfaces play a critical role in determining the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries, and uncovering how surface chemistry and structure evolve during cycling, particularly at the atomic level, is necessary for improved battery materials design. We report a scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) investigation into the atomistic mechanisms behind surface reconstruction induced by electrochemical cycling of cathode material LiMn 2 O 4 . Direct STEM observations reveal that surface layers of as-synthesised LiMn 2 O 4 thin films are subject to considerable compressive lattice strain as a result of oxygen deficiency. During the first charge, the lattice strain increases significantly, resulting in a reconstruction reaction to form Mn 3 O 4 with further loss of oxygen from the topmost layers. Continued cycling leads to deterioration of surface crystallinity. The observed irreversible structure changes affect charge transfer reaction kinetics at LiMn 2 O 4 surfaces because Li pathways become blocked by Mn atoms, contributing to a reduction in long-term cycle life and energy capacity. The ability to observe atomic-level changes at electrode surfaces at different stages of cycling provides a more robust understanding of electrode processes that can accelerate development of safer and longer-lasting battery materials.

Abstract:Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides (LMR) hold promise as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high reversible capacity. However, issues such as oxygen release and structural degradation associated with oxygen redox cause voltage decay and capacity decline during cycling. In this study, a monodisperse Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 cathode material with surface high-entropy architecture (MZCN-LMR) was synthesized to enhance the overlap between the non-bonding orbitals of oxygen (|O2p) and the (TM-O)* occupied band. This enhancement enables regulation of the depth of oxygen oxidation, improving reversible oxygen redox and creating highly flexible structures, with mitigated anisotropic modulus and lattice strain evolution during (de)intercalation. Consequently, the developed MZCN-LMR cathode exhibits impressive capacity retention of 80.5 % after 400 cycles and minimal voltage decay of 0.7 mV per cycle with the voltage range of 2.1–4.6 V. This surface high-entropy strategy offers a universal approach to enhancing the redox stability of anions, contributing to the application of LMR.
Eliminating interfacial O-involving degradation in Li-rich Mn-based cathodes for all-solid-state lithium batteries.

Abstract:In the pursuit of energy-dense all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSBs), Li-rich Mn-based oxide (LRMO) cathodes provide an exciting path forward with unexpectedly high capacity, low cost, and excellent processibility. However, the cause for LRMO|solid electrolyte interfacial degradation remains a mystery, hindering the application of LRMO-based ASSBs. Here, we first reveal that the surface oxygen instability of LRMO is the driving force for interfacial degradation, which severely blocks the interfacial Li-ion transport and triggers fast battery failure. By replacing the charge compensation of surface oxygen with sulfite, the overoxidation and interfacial degradation can be effectively prevented, therefore achieving a high specific capacity (~248 mAh g-1, 1.1 mAh cm-2; ~225 mAh g-1, 2.9 mAh cm-2) and excellent long-term cycling stability of >300 cycles with 81.2% capacity retention at room temperature. These findings emphasize the importance of irreversible anion reactions in interfacial failure and provide fresh insights into constructing stable interfaces in LRMO-based ASSBs.

Abstract:Surface dissolution of manganese is a long-standing issue hindering the practical application of spine! LiMn2O4 cathode material, while few studies concerning the crystal structure evolution at the surface area have been reported. Combining X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and density functional theory calculations, we investigate the chemical and structural evolutions on the surface of a LiMn2O4 electrode upon cycling. We found that an unexpected Mn3O4 phase was present on the surface of LiMn2O4 via the application of an advanced electron microscopy. Since the Mn3O4 phase contains 1/3 soluble Mn2+ ions, formation of this phase contributes significantly to the Mn2+ dissolution in a LiMn2O4 electrode upon cycling. It is further found that the Mn3O4 appears upon charge and disappears upon discharge, coincident with the valence change of Mn. Our results shed light on the importance of stabilizing the surface structure of cathode material, especially at the charged state. The understanding of the manganese dissolution reaction that occurs in the LiMn2O4 can certainly be extended to other oxide cathodes.
Surface Modification Driven Initial Coulombic Efficiency and Rate Performance Enhancement of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 Cathode

Abstract:Due to its high energy density and low cost, Li‐rich Mn‐based layered oxides are considered potential cathode materials for next generation Li‐ion batteries. However, they still suffer from serious obstacles of low initial Coulombic efficiency, which is detrimental to their practical application. Here, an efficient surface modification method via NH4H2PO4 assisted pyrolysis is performed to improve the Coulombic efficiency of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2, where appropriate oxygen vacancies, Li3PO4 and spinel phase are synchronously generated in the surface layer of LMR microspheres. Under the synergistic effect of the oxygen vacancies and spinel phase, the unavoidable oxygen release in the cycling process was effectively suppressed. Moreover, the induced Li3PO4 nanolayer could boost the lithium‐ion diffusion and mitigate the dissolution of transition metal ions, especially manganese ions, in the material. The optimally modified sample yielded an impressive initial Coulombic efficiency and outstanding rate performance.

Abstract:Lithium transition-metal oxides (LiMn2O4 and LiMO2 where M = Ni, Mn, Co, etc.) are widely applied as cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries due to their considerable capacity and energy density. However, multiple processes occurring at the cathode/electrolyte interface lead to overall performance degradation. One key failure mechanism is the dissolution of transition metals from the cathode. This work presents results combining scanning electrochemical microscopy with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies to examine cathode degradation products. Our effort employs a LiMn2O4 (LMO) thin film as a model cathode to monitor the Mn dissolution process without the potential complications of conductive additive and polymer binders. We characterize the electrochemical behavior of LMO degradation products in various electrolytes, paired with ICP and EPR, to better understand the properties of Mn complexes formed following metal dissolution. We find that the identity of the lithium salt anions in our electrolyte systems [ClO4–, PF6–, and (CF3SO2)2N–] appears to affect the Mn dissolution process significantly as well as the electrochemical behavior of the generated Mn complexes. Abstract:Understanding and controlling the surface activities of electrode materials is critical for optimizing the battery performance, especially for nanoparticles with high surface area. Na0.44MnO2 is a promising positive electrode material for large-scale sodium-ion batteries. However, its application in grid-scale energy storage requires improvements in cycling stability at high rate. Here, we performed comprehensive surface-sensitive soft x-ray spectroscopic studies of the Na0.44MnO2 electrode. We are able to quantitatively determine the Mn evolution upon the potentials and cycle numbers. We reveal the Mn2+ formation on the top 10nm of Na0.44MnO2 particles when the electrochemical potential is below 2.6V, which does not occur in the bulk. A portion of the surface Mn2+ compounds become electrochemically inactive after extended cycles, contributing to the capacity fading. Based on the spectroscopic discoveries, we demonstrate that cycling Na0.44MnO2 above 3V could efficiently suppress the Mn2+ formation.

Abstract:The lithium-excess layered cathode materials Li1+xM1-xO2 or xLi2MnO3·(1-x)LiMO2 (M is a transition metal or a mixture of transition metals) are quite promising due to the reversible capacity of up to 280 mAh g-1 and the wide working voltage range and low cost. There are some drawbacks to overcome for the further application of lithium-rich cathode although extensive researches have been carried out. The large irreversible capacity loss during the initial cycle has a significant impact on the subsequent charge and discharge capacity. The mechanisms of lithium transference and structure evolution during the initial and succeeding cycles require further investigation. The cathode exhibits awful rate capability because of the existence of the low electronic conductivity ingredient Li2MnO3. In addition, the cathode also presents a gradual capacity drop by reason of local phase transformation during cycling. The high capacity of ＞250 mAh g-1 only occurs when the voltage exceed 4.5 V and the 4.5 V platform is related to the oxidation of lattice O. The gas phase oxidation product releases from the material along with the migration of transition metal element and the resulted evolution of crystal structure. Considering the oxygen release and ion migration happened firstly at the surface of the material particles, the polyanions contains F are adopted to treat the surface of Li1.2Co0.13Ni0.13Mn0.54O2 in order to stabilize the crystal lattice. The treated materials show better electrochemical performance and the mechanism is analyzed in detail.
First-principles study of native point defects in LiNi(1/3)Co(1/3)Mn(1/3)O2 and Li2MnO3

Abstract:We have studied native point defects in the layered oxides of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 and Li2MnO3, the promising cathode materials for rechargeable Li-ion batteries for the application of high lithium capacity, by performing first-principles calculations. Through the calculations of formation energies for native point defects in LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, it was found that the Ni vacancy and the LiNi antisite are the most dominant defects, which shows a good agreement with previous experiments. Contrary to the previous experimental analysis, however, the NiLi antisite defect is not dominant, even though both Ni and Li ions have a similar ionic radius. In Li2MnO3, the LiMn antisite defect is dominant under the O-rich and Mn-poor condition. In contrast, the MnLi antisite, the Li vacancy in the Li layer, and the oxygen vacancy are dominant at the chemical potential of the boundary in equilibrium with Li2O. To enhance the migration of Li ions for achieving high power, the experimental syntheses of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 under the Ni-rich condition and Li2MnO3 under O-rich and Mn-poor condition were suggested. For Li2MnO3 suffering from poor electronic conductivity, it was found that the electronic conductivity can be increased by p- and n-type extrinsic doping under the O-rich and Mn-poor condition and the chemical potential of the boundary coexisting with Li2O, respectively, without losing the Li ion conductivity.

Abstract:Mn-based materials show potential as next-generation candidates for lithium-ion battery (LIB) cathode materials owing to their cost-effectiveness, high energy density, and high power density. However, during repetitive charging/discharging processes, these materials undergo cation migration, structural evolution, and phase transition, resulting in sluggish kinetics, substantial voltage decay, and capacity degradation. Herein, we present a Mn-based partially disordered spinel cathode material decorated with a cation-disordered rock salt (DRX) phase-enriched surface to mitigate this voltage and capacity degradation. We demonstrate that a DRX-rich surface layer successfully suppresses the degradation associated with the unfavorable phase transition from the cubic spinel to tetragonal spinel phase. Instead, by harnessing a gradual phase transition from the rock salt to cubic spinel phase concentrated on the surface region, the capacity and voltage increase, delaying the degradation and leading to improved capacity retention. Our findings suggest a strategic approach to exploit Mn-based cathode materials for developing LIBs with superior cyclability and further highlight the potential of controlling the spatial distribution of each phase to enhance the battery performance in multi-phasic cathode materials.

Abstract:Lithium-rich manganese-based layered cathode materials are considered to be one of the best options for next-generation lithium-ion batteries, owing to their ultra-high specific capacity (>250 mAh·g−1) and platform voltage. However, their poor cycling stability, caused by the release of lattice oxygen as well as the electrode/electrolyte side reactions accompanying complex phase transformation, makes it difficult to use this material in practical applications. In this work, we suggest a molybdenum surface modification strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2. The Mo-modified Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 material exhibits an enhanced discharge specific capacity of up to 290.5 mAh·g−1 (20 mA·g−1) and a capacity retention rate of 82% (300 cycles at 200 mA·g−1), compared with 261.2 mAh·g−1 and a 70% retention rate for the material without Mo modification. The significantly enhanced performance of the modified material can be ascribed to the formation of a Mo-compound-involved nanolayer on the surface of the materials, which effectively lessens the electrolyte corrosion of the cathode, as well as the activation of Mo6+ towards Ni2+/Ni4+ redox couples and the pre-activation of a Mo compound. This study offers a facile and effective strategy to address the poor cyclability of lithium-rich manganese-based layered cathode materials.

Abstract:Surface degradation induced by the dissolution of manganese is a major failure mechanism that has hampered the large-scale adoption of spinel LiMn2O4 cathode material for decades. Although modifications based on restraining manganese disproportionation reactions have received much attention, many of these methods may sacrifice batteries’ specific capacity and rate capability. Here, we present a strategy that surface-populated magnesium ion substitution at 8a tetrahedral sites in LiMn2O4 could significantly suppress spinel surface evolution and Mn dissolution during cycling. With a total trace amount of magnesium surface doping (0.3 wt %) introduced by ALD coating and annealing, the LiMn2O4 cathode shows a capacity retention of 98.6% after 250 cycles. This study reveals the role of atomic doping site selection and the significance of the electrode materials’ surface stability at the charged state.
