Abstract:Smart photovoltaic windows represent a promising green technology featuring tunable transparency and electrical power generation under external stimuli to control the light transmission and manage the solar energy. Here, we demonstrate a thermochromic solar cell for smart photovoltaic window applications utilizing the structural phase transitions in inorganic halide perovskite caesium lead iodide/bromide. The solar cells undergo thermally-driven, moisture-mediated reversible transitions between a transparent non-perovskite phase (81.7% visible transparency) with low power output and a deeply coloured perovskite phase (35.4% visible transparency) with high power output. The inorganic perovskites exhibit tunable colours and transparencies, a peak device efficiency above 7%, and a phase transition temperature as low as 105 °C. We demonstrate excellent device stability over repeated phase transition cycles without colour fade or performance degradation. The photovoltaic windows showing both photoactivity and thermochromic features represent key stepping-stones for integration with buildings, automobiles, information displays, and potentially many other technologies.

Abstract:This study introduces the synthesis and detailed characterization of a novel thermochromic material capable of reversible alterations in its thermotropic transmittance. Through an emulsion polymerization process, this newly developed material is composed of 75–85% octadecyl acrylate and 0–7% allyl methacrylate, demonstrating a pronounced discoloration effect across a narrow yet critical temperature range of 24.5–39 °C. The synthesized powder underwent a battery of tests, including differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, as well as scanning electron microscopy. These comprehensive evaluations confirmed the material's exceptional thermal stability, uniform particle size distribution, and strong anchoring properties. Building upon these findings, we advanced the development of thermochromic polyvinyl butyral films and laminated glass products. By utilizing a coextrusion technique, we integrated these films into laminated glass, setting a new benchmark against existing glass technologies. Remarkably, the incorporation of thermochromic PVB films into laminated glass led to a significant reduction in solar irradiance of 20–30%, outperforming traditional double silver low-emissivity glass. This achievement demonstrates the exceptional shading and thermal insulation properties of the material. The research presented herein not only pioneers a valuable methodology for the engineering of smart materials with tunable thermotropic transmittance but also holds the key to unlocking enhanced energy efficiency across a spectrum of applications. The potential impact of this innovation on the realm of sustainable building materials is profound, promising significant strides toward energy conservation and environmental stewardship.

Abstract:Highly robust, swiftly reversible thermochromic nature of a two-dimensional (2D) perovskite of (PDMA)(CH3NH3)(n-1)PbnI3n+1, nominally prepared as n = 2 is found, where PDMA = C6H4(CH2NH3)(2). A wide band gap variation from 700 to 430 nm is observed between room temperature and >60 degrees C under ambient conditions, resulting from moisture absorption and desorption. X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy are performed to analyze the hydrated and dehydrated states. Furthermore, the (PDMA)(CH3NH3)(n-1)PbnI3n+1 film is demonstrated as an active material for smart windows and thermochromic solar cells, which could lower the inside air temperature in an enclosed space and supply a power conversion efficiency of more than 0.5% at a high ambient temperature, respectively. Overall, we may pave a pathway for exploring the novel phenomena and applications of Dion-Jacobson 2D perovskites.
Highly Sensitive Two‐Dimensional Ruddlesden‐Popper Perovskites for Thermochromic Smart Windows

Abstract:With the growing demand for high‐performance smart windows, the discover of a class of thermochromic materials with reversible cycling and rapid response characteristics has become urgent. In this work, we have uncovered a two‐dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden‐Popper (RP) phase halide perovskite, (PMA)2MAPb2I7−xClx, where PMA = C6H5CH2NH3 and MA = CH3NH3, exhibiting exceptional reversible thermochromic properties. The 2D RP phase perovskite thin film features a low transition temperature of 30 °C from the hydrated state to the hot state, along with a fast transition time of 40 s. Furthermore, the addition of 0.5 times excess MAI significantly enhances the visible light transmittance of the hydrated state. Characteristic hydration peaks in X‐ray diffraction patterns and O‐H bond absorption peaks in Fourier‐transform infrared spectra are observed in the thin film in its hydrated state, which disappear in the hot state, validating its reversible thermochromic properties. Additionally, a solar cell based on the thermochromic 2D RP phase thin film achieves a power conversion efficiency of 2.31%, offering a promising solution for advanced smart window technologies.

Abstract:Thermochromic smart windows are optical devices that can regulate their optical properties actively in response to external temperature changes. Due to their simple structures and as they do not require other additional energy supply devices, they have great potential in building energy-saving. However, conventional thermochromic smart windows generally have problems with high response temperatures and low response rates. Owing to their great effect in photothermal conversion, photothermal materials are often used in smart windows to assist phase transition so that they can quickly achieve the dual regulation of light and heat at room temperature. Based on this, research progress on the phase transition of photothermal material-assisted thermochromic smart windows is summarized. In this paper, the phase transition mechanisms of several thermochromic materials (VO2, liquid crystals, and hydrogels) commonly used in the field of smart windows are introduced. Additionally, the applications of carbon-based nanomaterials, noble metal nanoparticles, and semiconductor (metal oxygen/sulfide) nanomaterials in thermochromic smart windows are summarized. The current challenges and solutions are further indicated and future research directions are also proposed.

Abstract:Uncontrolled sunlight entering through windows contributes to substantial heating and cooling demands in buildings, which leads to high energy consumption from the buildings. Recently, perovskite smart windows have emerged as innovative energy‐saving technologies, offering the potential to adaptively control indoor solar heat gain through their impressive sunlight modulation capabilities. Moreover, harnessing the high‐efficiency photovoltaic properties of perovskite materials, these windows have the potential to generate power, thereby realizing more advanced windows with combined light modulation and energy harvesting capabilities. This review summarizes the recent advancements in various chromic perovskite materials for achieving light modulation, focusing on both perovskite structures and underlying switching mechanisms. The discussion also encompasses device engineering strategies for smart windows, including the improvement of their optical and transition performance, durability, combination with electricity generation, and the evaluation of their energy‐saving performance in building applications. Furthermore, the challenges and opportunities associated with perovskite smart windows are explicated, aimed at stimulating more academic research and advancing their pragmatic implementation for building energy efficiency and sustainability. Abstract:Windows are important part of buildings and transmit light between indoors and outdoors. Frequent heat exchange through windows increases building energy consumption. Smart windows can change optical properties and modulate solar radiation, which are recognized as frontrunners in building energy saving. Among various smart windows, thermochromic windows usually passively regulate light transmittance in response to environmental temperature, and have showed great potential for practical applications. Thermochromic materials are key to constructing thermochromic smart windows. Usually, reversible phase transition takes place for thermoresponsive materials near the critical transition temperature, leading to changes in transmittance over different spectrum bands. Representative thermochromic materials include metal oxides, hydrogels, perovskites, ionic liquids, and liquid crystals, etc. The intrinsic phase transition temperature, luminous transmittance, and solar modulation ability are among the critical parameters defining the performance of smart windows. New strategies have been developed to modulate the performance of thermochromic materials and smart windows to fit demands from different environments and climates. Such endeavors have boosted smart windows to modulate full-spectrum solar regulation, and to achieve efficient all-climate building energy saving. Next generation smart windows will not only modulate solar transmission, but also convert and store solar energy through new power technologies like thermoelectricity conversion and solar cells. Challenges and future prospects of smart windows are discussed to inspire future building energy saving.

Abstract:Smart window structures based on highly conductive, transparent ZnO/Au/Al2O3 nanomesh structures with state of the art figures of merit integrated with thermochromic perovskite films are demonstrated. Optical transparency is manipulated by transient resistive heating to trigger a thermochromic transition. The resulting climate‐adaptive, low power‐activated, and fast‐switching smart window structure is promising for the next‐generation perovskite‐based smart photovoltaic windows. Smart windows are energy‐efficient windows whose optical transparency can be switched between highly transparent and opaque states in response to incident solar illumination. Transparent and conductive metal nanomesh (NM) films are promising candidates for thermochromic smart windows due to their excellent thermal conductivity, high optical transparency at near infrared wavelengths, and outstanding stability. In this study, ZnO/Au/Al2O3 NM films with periodicities of 200 and 370 nm are reported. The ZnO/Au/Al2O3 NM film with a 370 nm periodicity exhibits a transmittance over 90% at 550 nm and sheet resistance lower than 20 Ω sq−1. Based on a standard figure of merit, this structure outperforms current state‐of‐the‐art NM films. Here, the integration of ZnO/Au/Al2O3 NM films into a thermochromic perovskite smart window is also demonstrated. The transparency of the smart window structure is manipulated by transient resistive heating to trigger the thermochromic transition to the opaque state, which can be then maintained solely by 1‐sun, AM 1.5 G illumination. This climate‐adaptive, low power‐activated, and fast‐switching smart window structure opens new pathways toward its practical application in the real world.

Abstract:Thermochromic systems are promising candidates for energy-saving smart window applications. However, these passively responsive optical materials are subject to limitations such as a lack of active optical control, poor solar modulation (ΔTsol) ability, and rather inconvenient switching-temperature tunability. Herein, we present a simply processed hybrid thermochromic soft-matter material sandwiched between two transparent graphene sheets, where the intermediate material possesses a phase-separated polymer framework containing liquid-crystalline micro-domains with sematic A (SmA) to chiral nematic (N*) phase change behavior and tungsten doped vanadium dioxide (W–VO2) nanocrystals (NCs). This hybrid organic/inorganic thermochromic system not only features high mechanical strength, excellent flexibility and large-area processibility, but also possesses a dual-active/passive optical modulation mode, controllable visible and near infrared light transmittance, a tunable switching-temperature and a high ΔTsol of 40.9%. This work not only enriches the family of thermochromic materials, embracing broad practical applications in buildings and automobiles, but also gives new insights into the next generation of smart window technologies.

Abstract:Architectural windows that smartly regulate the indoor solar irradiation are promised to economize the building energy consumption. Here, we demonstrate a method for adaptive, broadband, and highly efficient solar modulation for energy-efficient smart windows through active plasmonics in reconfigurable structures. We develop a kirigami-inspired elastomer containing plasmonic vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanoparticles, in which the geometrical transition and the temperature-dependent localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) present dominant controls in ultraviolet-visible and near-infrared regions, respectively. The active LSPR control, via stretch-induced local dielectric changes is mitigated on reconfigurable metamaterials because of their unique strain distributions. This method demonstrated a desirable property in energy-efficient smart windows facilitating improved solar energy modulation (37.7%), surpassing the best-reported modulation in passive and transparent VO2 thermochromism systems. This first attempt to integrate the plasmonics and reconfigurable structures may inspire developments in smart windows, building energy economization, as well as fundamental studies of plasmonic controls in metastructures.

However, existing responsive materials for smart windows either require power to function or suffer from oxidation and durability issues. The proposed system introduces a new category of thermochromic smart materials with superior environmental stability compared with conventional thermochromic materials such as vanadium dioxide (VO2) and water-rich hydrogels. Switchable Materials for Smart Windows

Abstract:This article reviews the basic principles of and recent developments in electrochromic, photochromic, and thermochromic materials for applications in smart windows. Compared with current static windows, smart windows can dynamically modulate the transmittance of solar irradiation based on weather conditions and personal preferences, thus simultaneously improving building energy efficiency and indoor human comfort. Although some smart windows are commercially available, their widespread implementation has not yet been realized. Recent advances in nanostructured materials provide new opportunities for next-generation smart window technology owing to their unique structure-property relations. Nanomaterials can provide enhanced coloration efficiency, faster switching kinetics, and longer lifetime. In addition, their compatibility with solution processing enables low-cost and high-throughput fabrication. This review also discusses the importance of dual-band modulation of visible and near-infrared (NIR) light, as nearly 50% of solar energy lies in the NIR region. Some latest results show that solution-processable nanostructured systems can selectively modulate the NIR light without affecting the visible transmittance, thus reducing energy consumption by air conditioning, heating, and artificial lighting.

Abstract:Window glazing plays an essential role to modulate indoor light and heat transmission, which is a prospect to save the energy cost in buildings. The latest photovoltachromic technology has been regarded as one of the most ideal solutions, however, to achieve full-frame size (100% active area) and high-contrast ratio (>30% variable in visible wavelength) for smart window applicability is still a challenge. Here we report a photovoltachromic device combining full-transparent perovskite photovoltaic and ion-gel based electrochromic components in a vertical tandem architecture without any intermediated electrode. Most importantly, by accurately adjusting the halide-exchanging period, this photovoltachromic module can realize a high pristine transmittance up to 76%. Moreover, it possesses excellent colour-rendering index to 96, wide contrast ratio (>30%) on average visible transmittance (400-780 nm), and a self-adaptable transmittance adjustment and control indoor brightness and temperature automatically depending on different solar irradiances.

Abstract:Thermochromic perovskites, renowned for their tunable bandgap, high absorption coefficient, and reversible color changes, emerge as promising candidates for applications in smart windows. These advancements not only have the potential to enhance occupant comfort but also contribute significantly to reducing energy consumption in buildings. Here, we present a two‐dimensional lead‐free organic‐inorganic hybrid perovskite [Cyclobutylammonium]2CuCl4 which shows phase transitions from C2/c to P21/c to P21/c space group at 319.5 K and 348.8 K, respectively. Accompanying these transitions is a fascinating, reversible phase structure‐dependent thermochromic behavior, manifesting as a vibrant sequence from yellow to brown to slightly dark brown. Most importantly, the demonstrated ability to switch stably between high and low dielectric states indicates the enormous potential of this material as a dielectric switch. This non‐toxic thermoresponsive perovskite, characterized by its appropriate transition temperatures, reversible phase structure‐dependent thermochromism, and stable dielectric switching behavior, is expected to generate significant interest within the fields of thermoresponsive and dielectric switching materials. The integration of these features not only positions this perovskite as a noteworthy subject of scientific inquiry but also opens avenues for practical applications in diverse fields.

Abstract:Thermochromic energy efficient windows dynamically regulate building energy exchange by changing their optical transmittance. Recently, thermochromic materials with different chromic mechanisms are developed to fulfill smart window demands. Advanced fabrication technologies for smart windows also lead to building energy efficiency optimization. In this Perspective, representative mechanisms and performances of promising thermochromic systems, including vanadium dioxide, hydrogels, perovskites, ionic liquids, and liquid crystals, are discussed. Furthermore, the emerging technology of radiative cooling is emphasized for future building energy saving. Building temperature regulation and energy saving based on smart windows will make great impacts on the global low carbon economy.
