Abstract:Boron nitride nanotubes have been proposed of having great potential in various applications due to their outstanding properties such as high thermal conductivity and excellent chemical stability. Here, we present a template-assisted method of synthesizing vertically-aligned boron nitride nanotubes (VA-BNNTs) from vertically-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (VA-SWCNTs). This approach involves a chemical vapor deposition of boron nitride layers coating onto VA-SWCNTs first and subsequent removal of VA-SWCNTs by the oxidation in pure oxygen. The obtained VA-SWCNTs covered by BNNTs and VA-BNNTs arrays retain a highly ordered vertically aligned structure. The thermal stability of VA-SWCNTs was enhanced by coating with BNNTs. The structure and crystalline conditions were characterized by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The chemical composition of samples was investigated by UV–Vis–NIR absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Boron nitride coating starts onto VA-SWCNTs from the top of the VA-SWCNTs array, which is confirmed by NanoSIMS characterization.Graphical abstract

Automated Synthesis of Wireframe DNA Nanotubes

Abstract:DNA nanotechnology has revolutionized our ability to position matter at the nanoscale, but the preparation of DNA-based architectures remains laborious. To facilitate the formation of custom structures, we report a fully automated method to produce sequence- and size-defined DNA nanotubes. By programming the sequential addition of desired building blocks, rigid DX-tile-based DNA nanotubes (and flexible wireframe DNA structures) are attained, where the total number of possible constructs increases as a power function of the number of different units available. Using single-molecule fluorescence imaging, the kinetics and yield of each synthetic step can be quantitatively determined, revealing differences in self-assembly dynamics as the nanotube is built up from the solid support and providing new insights into DNA self-assembly. The exploitation of automation for both assembly and analysis (tthrough an developed K-means clustering algorithm) facilitates a workflow wherein the synthesis parameters may be iteratively improved upon, demonstrating how a single-molecule ‘assembly-analysis-optimization’ sequence can be used to generate complex, non-covalent materials in good yield. The presented synthetic strategy is generalizable, making use of equipment already available in most standard laboratories and represents the first fully automated supramolecular assembly on a solid support.

Abstract:Based on an in situ template method, branched phosphazene -containing nanotubes were synthesized via a controlled two-step adding technique of acid acceptors. Structural and morphological characterizations of the as-synthesized products were performed by SEM, TEM, EDX and FTIR. The results showed that the branched nanotubes were had inner and outer diameters of 8 and 50-150 nm, respectively. In addition, a formation mechanism for the nano-structures was proposed.

Abstract:In the processes that are used to produce single-walled nanotubes (electric arc, laser ablation, and chemical vapor deposition), the typical lengths of tangled nanotube bundles reach several tens of micrometers. We report that long nanotube strands, up to several centimeters in length, consisting of aligned single-walled nanotubes can be synthesized by the catalytic pyrolysis of n-hexane with an enhanced vertical floating technique. The long strands of nanotubes assemble continuously from arrays of nanotubes, which are intrinsically long.
Atomistic Study of the Encapsulation of Diamondoids Inside Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:The encapsulation of hydrogen-terminated nanosized diamond fragments (the so-called diamondoids) into armchair single walled carbon nanotubes with diameters in the range of 1.0 up to 2.2 nm has been investigated using classical molecular dynamics simulations. Diameter dependent molecular ordered phases were found for the encapsulation of adamantane (C10H16), diamantane (C14H20), and dihydroxy diamantane (C14H20O2). The same types of chiral ordered phases (double, triple, 4- and 5-stranded helices) observed for the encapsulation of C60 molecules were also observed for diamondoids. On the other hand, some achiral phases comprising layered structures were not observed. Our results also indicate that the modification of diamantane through functionalization with hydroxyl groups can lead to an enhancement of the packing of molecules inside the nanotubes compared to nonfunctionalized compounds. Comparisons to hard-sphere models are also presented revealing differences, specially when more asymmetrical diamondoids are considered. For larger structures (adamantane tetramers) we have not observed long-range ordering for nanotubes with diameters in the range of 1.49 to 2.17 nm but only a tendency to form incomplete helical structures.

Abstract:The fabrication of well-defined, low-dimensional diamondoid-based materials is a promising approach for tailoring diamond properties such as superconductivity. On-surface self-assembly of halogenated diamondoids under ultrahigh vacuum conditions represents an effective strategy in this direction, enabling reactivity exploration and on-surface synthesis approaches. Here we demonstrate through scanning probe microscopy, time-of-flight mass spectrometry and photoelectron spectroscopy, that self-assembled layers of dibromodiamantanes on gold can be debrominated at atomic wavelengths (Al K$\alpha$ at 8.87 $\mathring{A}$ and Mg K$\alpha$ at 9.89 $\mathring{A}$) and low temperatures without affecting their well-defined arrangement. The resulting 'in-architecture' debromination enables the fabrication of diamantane chains from self-assembled precursors in close proximity, which is otherwise inaccessible through annealing on metal surfaces. Our work introduces a novel approach for the fabrication of nanodiamond chains, with significant implications for in-architecture and layer-by-layer synthesis.

Abstract:The construction of nanotubes with well-defined structures, although synthetically challenging, offers the prospect of studying novel chemical reactions and transportation within confined spaces, as well as fabricating molecular devices and nanoporous materials. Here we report a discrete molecular nanotube, namely the covalent organic pillar COP-1 , synthesized through a [2 + 5] imine condensation reaction involving two penta-aldehyde macrocycles and five phenylenediamine linkers. A pair of enantiomeric nanotubes, obtained in a quantitative and diastereoselective manner, were characterized and resolved readily. NMR spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetric and X-ray crystallographic studies revealed that the 2-nm-long and 4.7-Å-wide one-dimensional channel inside COP-1 can accommodate α , ω -disubstituted n -alkyl chains with complementary lengths and electron density distributions. Furthermore, in a length-mismatched host–guest pair, we found that the nonamethylene dibromide thread not only displays a diminished binding constant in solution, but adapts an energetically unfavoured gauche conformation inside COP-1 in the solid state.

Abstract:In this paper, an interesting strategy has been described for the direct synthesis of parallel aligned metal-boron alloy nanotubes on silicon substrates, involving the use of lyotropic liquid crystal of non-ionic-anionic mixed surfactants. In particular, super-long, up to the scale of millimetres, nanotubes with well-controlled inner and outer diameters can be obtained. The current lyotropic liquid crystal template method could be used as an effective strategy for the in situ synthesis of aligned one-dimensional nanostructures with the wet chemical method. The results further prove the rolling-up mechanism for the formation of noncrystal metal-boron alloy nanotubes with a layered lyotropic liquid crystal precursor.

Abstract:Abstract The precise molecular design of functional dendritic polymers enables the accumulation of multiple metals within the molecular cage. We have established the synthesizing methodology of metallodendrimers where the number of constituent atoms, the choice of elements, and the composition ratio were precisely controlled through the intramolecular Lewis acid-base interaction at each branch part of phenylazomethine dendrons. Chemical reduction of metallodendrimers, due to their inherent capsule effect, generates homogeneous subnanoparticles with a particle size of about 1 nm in diameter within the dendrimer cage. Fabricated subnanoparticles show amorphous crystal structures with distorted and fluctuated surface atoms and, with such a unique atomic structure, induce peculiar electronic states, surpassing unique and discrete physical and chemical properties of conventional nanoparticles and bulk metals. In this paper, we review the dendrimer-derived synthesis of atomic hybrid subnanoparticles and their application researches established in our laboratory.

Abstract:THE properties and potential applications of carbon nanotubes filled with other materials have aroused much speculation(1-5). Strategies for filling nanotubes include irt situ growth in an are reactor using metal/carbon composites(2,5) and the capillarity-driven filling of open nanotubes using liquid reagents(3,4). Here we report an alternative approach to the synthesis of nanoscale structures based on nanotubes, in which the tubes are converted to carbide rods by reaction with volatile oxide and/or halide species. In this way we have been able to prepare solid carbide nanoscale rods of TiC, NbC, Fe3C, SiC and BCx in high yield with typical diameters of between 2 and 30 nm and lengths of up to 20 mu m. Preliminary studies show that these rods share the properties of the bulk materials (such as magnetism and superconductivity), suggesting that they might allow the investigation of the effects of confinement and reduced dimensionality on such solid-state properties. These carbide nanorods might also find technological applications in nanostructured composite materials.

Abstract:A generic method has been developed for the synthesis of crystalline metal nanowires or nanotubes (such as bismuth nanotubes, tungsten nanowires) from lamellar structures. In a typical process, lamellar surfactant/inorganic composite precursors are first prepared by reacting cationic or anionic surfactants with inorganic species under appropriate conditions. After treating these precursors by hydrothermal pyrolysis, or other processes, crystalline metallic nanotubes or nanowires are obtained.

Abstract:An effective route to diameter-controlled single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) remains elusive. The use of organic templates to precisely control the diameter of the resulting nanotubes holds great promise in this regard but has hitherto had very limited practical success. A main obstacle is the limited availability of suitable organic templates. Here, we report the diameter-controlled bottom-up synthesis of SWCNTs with elaborately designed [2n]collarenes, hydrocarbon belts consisting of alternating phenylene and 1,4-cyclohexadiene rings, as rigid organic templates. A new approach has been developed to construct these collarenes, which are then used as templates in the bottom-up growth of SWCNTs. The resulting SWCNTs exhibit narrow diameter distributions, matching the diameters of the employed collarene templates. This work greatly propels the synthesis of diameter-controlled SWCNTs.

Abstract:Nanodiamonds are interesting materials from the point of view of their biocompatibility and their chemical, spectroscopic, and mechanical properties. Current synthetic methods for nanodiamonds involve harsh environments, which are potentially hazardous in addition to being expensive. We report a low-temperature (423 K) hydrothermal approach to form nanodiamonds by using graphene-oxide or nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, or pyrene) as a starting material. The reaction products contain single-crystalline or twinned nanodiamonds with average diameters in the 2–3 nm range. Theoretical calculations prove that, at the nanoscale, sub-4 nm nanodiamonds may adopt a structure that is more stable than graphene-oxide and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Abstract:The selective synthesis of energetically less favorable ring-shaped nanostructures by liquid phase synthetic chemistry is a huge challenge. Herein, we report a precise synthesis of carbon nanorings with a well-defined morphology and tunable thickness based on asymmetric intramicellar phase-transition-induced tip-to-tip assembly via mixing hydrophobic long-chain octadecanol and block copolymer F127. This orientational self-assembly depends on the hydrophobicity difference of the intermediate's surface, which triggers directional interactions that surpass the entropy cost of undesired connections and help assemble intermediates into defined ringlike structures. Based on a ringlike template, carbon nanorings with adjustable sizes can be attained by changing synthetic variables. More importantly, diverse units including crescentlike, podlike, and garlandlike nanostructures can also be created through controlling the kinetics of the self-assembly process. This discovery lays a solid foundation for the challenging construction of such a precise configuration on the nanoscale, which would not only promote fundamental studies but also pave the way for the development of advanced nanodevices with unique properties.Carbon nanorings with a well-defined morphology and tunable thickness have been selectively synthesized via asymmetric intramicellar phase-transition-induced tip-to-tip assembly.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) combined the advantages of multi-walled (MW-) and single-walled (SW-) CNTs can be obtained by transforming the precursors (e.g. fullerene, ferrocene) into thin inner CNTs inside SWCNTs as templates. However, this method is limited since the DWCNT yield is strongly influenced by the filling efficiency (depending on the type of the filled molecules), opening and cutting the SWCNTs, and the diameter of the host SWCNTs. Therefore, it cannot be applied to all types of SWCNT templates. Here we show a universal route to synthesize ultra-thin DWCNTs via making SWCNTs stable at high temperature in vacuum. This method applies to different types of SWCNTs including metallicity-sorted ones without using any precursors since the carbon sources were from the reconstructed SWCNTs and the residue carbons. The resulting DWCNTs are with high quality and the yield of inner tubes is comparable to/higher than that of the DWCNTs made from the transformation of ferrocene/fullerene peapods.

Abstract:Since their detection 20 years ago, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have captured the interest of scientists, because one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures (nanowires, nanotubes, and nanoribbons) have fascinating physical properties and many potential technological applications. These are materials with structural features limited to the range of 1-100 nm in one dimension, and unlimited in the others. When their size goes down to certain characteristic lengths, such as the Bohr radius, the wavelength of incandescent light, and the phonon mean-free path, quantum mechanical effects can occur. This results in novel optical, magnetic, and electronic characteristics. These physical properties, along with unique transport features in the longitudinal direction and large surface-to-volume ratio, make 1D nanostructures attract extensive attention in both fundamental research and engineering applications. From a synthetic point of view, it is highly desirable to develop a simple route for fabricating 1D nanostructures in large scale at low cost. On the other hand, in order to transfer the intrinsic features of individual 1D nanostructures into macroscopic scale and realize practical applications, we need to explore highly efficient and scalable assembly methods to integrate 1D nanostructures into functional macroscopic architectures. In 2006, our group developed a simple hydrothermal method for synthesizing ultrathin Te nanowires (TeNWs) using conventional chemicals. As we found through systematic study over the past several years, we can use the ultrathin TeNWs as a versatile templating material to fabricate a series of high-quality 1D nanostructures by taking the unique advantages of TeNWs, such as large-scale synthesis, high processability, and high reactivity. The obtained 1D products inherit the dimensional (high aspect ratio) and mechanical (high flexibility) features of the original TeNW templates, thus allowing us to construct macroscopic architectures by using them as nanoscale building blocks. In this Account, we describe on our recent developments in the multiplex templating synthesis of 1D nanostructures, their macroscopic assemblies, and applications. We first introduce ultrathin TeNWs and their advantages as a templating material. Through the multiplex templating process, we can prepare a family of 1D nanostructures that covers a wide range of materials, including noble metals, metal oxides, semiconductors, carbon, polymers, and their binary and multiple hybrids. We emphasize the reactivity of templating materials and the versatility of templating processes in this Account. On the basis of the templated 1D products, we then describe a series of macroscopic assemblies of 1D nanostructures, including free-standing membranes, films, hydrogels, and aerogels. These exhibit enormous potential for attractive applications, such as liquid filtration and separation, continuous-flow catalysis, electrocatalysis, polymer-based nanocomposites, and superadsorbents, and elastomeric conductors. We believe that the great versatility of templating synthesis, a scalable assembling process, and large-scale synthesis can significantly enhance the application reliability of the 1D nanostructures.

Abstract:Carbon nanobelts are molecules of high fundamental and technological interest due to their structural similarity to carbon nanotubes, of which they are molecular cutouts. Despite this attention, synthetic accessibility is a major obstacle, such that the few known strategies offer limited structural diversity, functionality, and scalability. To address this bottleneck, we have developed a new strategy that utilizes highly fused monomer units constructed via a site-selective [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition and a high-yielding zirconocene-mediated macrocyclization to achieve the synthesis of a new carbon nanobelt on large scale with the introduction of functional handles in the penultimate step. This nanobelt represents a diagonal cross section of an armchair carbon nanotube and consequently has a longitudinally extended structure with an aspect ratio of 1.6, the highest of any reported nanobelt.
