Abstract:In this paper, a discontinuous projection-based output feedback adaptive robust learning control (OARLC) scheme is constructed for a class of nonlinear systems in a semi-strict feedback form by incorporating an observer and a dynamic normalization signal. Since only output signal is available for measurement, an observer is firstly designed to provide exponentially convergent estimates of the unmeasurable states. Using certain known basis functions to capture the characteristics of unknown general periodic disturbances, the discontinuous projection type adaptation law can then be used to tune the amplitudes of those basis functions on-line to recover the unknown general periodic disturbances asymptotically. The estimation errors due to the unknown initial states, uncompensated disturbances, and the uncertain nonlinearities are also effectively dealt with via certain robust feedback at each step of the proposed OARLC backstepping design. The resulting controller achieves a guaranteed transient and a prescribed final tracking accuracy for output tracking performance. In addition, when the general periodic disturbances fall within the approximation ranges of the periodic basis functions, asymptotic output tracking performance is achieved as well. © 2011 IFAC.

Abstract:A novel control strategy based on the nonlinear observer technique for a class of chaotic oscillations is proposed. By assuming that the exact model of the system is not known, the control strategy employs a nonlinear observer to track the states and disturbances of the nonlinear system, and then constructs a nonlinear feedback law. Simulation results on van der Pol oscillator are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the control strategy.

Abstract:When approximate unstable periodic orbit (UPO) embedded in a discrete chaotic attractor was known only, the stable state of the system using the method of variable feedback control was discussed. The stable state is neither the approximate UPO nor the exact one. The method of using the feedback control quantity of the stable state to correct adaptively approximate UPO to exact one was proposed. It makes the system to stable on exact UPO and feedback control quantity to be zero. To certain extent, the method can correct stable state of the system induced by inaccuracy of the known orbit under branch and chaotic state, and is beneficial to enhance the robustness of the system. The simulation results on adaptive correction in No.1 and 2 period of Henon map have illustrated that the method is effective.

Abstract:The method of controlling chaos by occasional nonlinear time-delayed feedback is proposed. Through the numerical analysis of bifurcation diagram and Lyapunov exponent, we found that the systematic chaos can be controlled effectively by the nonlinear time-delayed feedback as the form of u(x(n),x(n-k)) = cx(n)x(n-k). Under the proper feedback coefficient c, time-delayed coefficient k and occasional feedback period N, the system could be controlled from chaos to the steady periodic orbit, and also the steady period is the integral multiple of the occasional feedback period N.

Abstract:For solving the chaos synchronization problem between two chaotic systems with bidirectional coupling,a new synchronization method of chaotic systems based on time-delayed feedback was presented.Coupling coefficients between the drive and response systems were assumed identically and states were supposed to be linearly-coupled.Based on the Lyapunov stability theory,the condition was derived for synchronization according to the error dynamic system of the synchronization model.The scope of coupling parameters was obtained by solving Riccati equations. After delay time was selected appropriately,the effects of the states between the response system and the drive system were studied.The results show that the synchronization and control of systems can be guaranteed in the parameter scope.The trace of coupling chaotic systems can be synchronized by the changing delay time of control signal,and the system can be controlled to the fixed point or the period orbit.

Abstract:Though engineers believe that self-excited oscillation and chaos is detrimental, recent research has revealed that self-excited periodic and chaotic oscillation can be effectively utilized in many engineering processes and devices for significant benefits. Then a simple nonlinear acceleration feedback controller is proposed to generate self-excited periodic and chaotic oscillation in a mechanical oscillator. Analytical expressions relating the amplitude of limit cycles and control parameters are obtained by the method of multiple time scales. Analytical results are verified by numerical simulations performed in MATLAB–SIMULINK. Existence of chaotic oscillations is confirmed by numerical simulations. An extensive parametric study is carried out to reveal the nature of the chaotic oscillations and its dependence on the controller parameters. Theoretical results are finally verified by experiments. It is generally observed that the same controller can be used to induce both periodic and chaotic oscillations just by flipping the phase of the controller. This is possibly the first example where the same controller can be utilized to generate periodic and chaotic oscillation in a mechanical system. The findings of the paper are believed to be used in macro- and micro-mechanical systems.

Abstract:Based on geometric theory of nonlinear feedback control, a new method to synchronize chaotic systems was put forward. As prerequisite of an appropriate smooth vector field by virtue of nonlinear differential geometry theory to assure the normalization of the receiver system was completed, and then in terms of differences of outputs and their different orders derivatives of the transmitter and receiver, the synchronization error state equations were constructed. By pole assignment, a nonlinear controller to synchronization output signals of two chaotic systems was also given and extended to the whole or part of the states of the two systems. As a result; numerical simulation to the Chua's circuit and its application in secure communication proves the efficacy of the suggested methods.

Abstract:In this paper, the control of delaying period-doubling bifurcations and unstable periodic orbits embedded in a chaotic attractor of a discrete nonlinear dynamical system is effectively realized by using the state variables feedback and parameter variation. Moreover, the 2(n) periodic orbits of the system can be controlled into the 2(m) ( m < n) periodic orbits by the methods proposed.

Abstract:Based on the adaptive iterative learning strategy, a simple time-delayed controller is proposed to stabilize unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) embedded in chaotic attractors. This controller includes two parts: one is a linear feedback part; the other is an adaptive iterative learning estimation part. Abstract:A method for stabilizing unstable periodic orbits (UPO) embedded in a chaotic attractor is presented. The conditions for controlling chaos and bifurcation through feeding back a delayed discrete variable are analyzed. The feedback procedure is applicable without knowing a priori the location and the periodicity of the UPO. Our method can be applied not only to the chaotic attractor but also to the situation of bifurcation.

Abstract:This paper deals with the synchronization of chaotic systems with structure or parameters difference. Nonlinear differential geometry theory was applied to transform the chaotic discrepancy system into canonical form. A feedback control for synchronizing two chaotic systems is proposed based on sliding mode control design. To make this controller physically realizable, an extended state observer is used to estimate the error between the transmitter and receiver. Two illustrative examples were carried out: (1) The Chua oscillator was used to show that synchronization was achieved and the message signal was recovered in spite of parametric variations; (2) Two second-order driven oscillators were presented to show that the synchronization can be achieved and that the message can be recovered in spite of the strictly different model.

Abstract:Predictive Feedback Control is an easy-to-implement method to stabilize unknown unstable periodic orbits in chaotic dynamical systems. Predictive Feedback Control is severely limited because asymptotic convergence speed decreases with stronger instabilities which in turn are typical for larger target periods, rendering it harder to effectively stabilize periodic orbits of large period. Here, we study stalled chaos control, where the application of control is stalled to make use of the chaotic, uncontrolled dynamics, and introduce an adaptation paradigm to overcome this limitation and speed up convergence. This modified control scheme is not only capable of stabilizing more periodic orbits than the original Predictive Feedback Control but also speeds up convergence for typical chaotic maps, as illustrated in both theory and application. The proposed adaptation scheme provides a way to tune parameters online, yielding a broadly applicable, fast chaos control that converges reliably, even for periodic orbits of large period.

Abstract:The new chaos control method presented in this paper is useful for taking advantage of chaos. Based on sliding mode control theory, this paper provides a switching manifold controlling strategy of chaotic system, and also gives a kind of adaptive parameters estimated method to estimate the unknown systems' parameters by which chaotic dynamical system can be synchronized. Taking the Lorenz system as example, and with the help of this controlling strategy, we can synchronize chaotic systems with unknown parameters and different initial conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we design an adaptive iterative learning control method for a class of high-order nonlinear output feedback discrete-time systems with random initial conditions and iteration-varying desired trajectories. An n-step ahead predictor approach is employed to estimate future outputs. The discrete Nussbaum gain method is incorporated into the control design to deal with unknown control directions. The proposed control algorithm ensures that the tracking error converges to zero asymptotically along the iterative learning axis except for the beginning outputs affected by random initial conditions. A numerical simulation is carried out to demonstrate the efficacy of the presented control laws.

Abstract:In this paper, a sampled-data fuzzy controller is designed to stabilize a class of chaotic systems. A Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is employed to represent the chaotic systems. Based on this general model, the exponential stability issue of the closed-loop systems with an input constraint is first investigated by a novel time-dependent Lyapunov functional, which is positive definite at sampling times but not necessary between the sampling times. Then, two sufficient conditions are developed for sampled-data fuzzy controller synthesis of the underlying T-S fuzzy model with or without input constraint. All the proposed results in this paper depend on both the upper and lower bounds on a sampling interval, and the available information about the actual sampling pattern is fully utilized. The proposed sampled-data fuzzy control scheme is successfully applied to the chaotic Lorenz system, which is shown to be effective and less conservative compared with existing results.

Abstract:We propose a method for controlling chaos and hyper-chaos by applying continuous proportional feedback to the system variables and their derivatives. The method has been applied successfully in six-order coupled Chua's hyper-chaotic circuit system. The theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results show that unstable fixed points embedded in hyper-chaotic attractors can be stabilized and Hopf bifurcation can be observed for the controlled system.

Abstract:It is a typical route to generate chaos via period-doubling bifurcations in some nonlinear systems. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid control strategy in which state feedback and parameter perturbation are used to control the period-doubling bifurcations and to stabilize unstable periodic orbits embedded in the chaotic attractor of a discrete chaotic dynamical system. Simulation shows that the higher stable 2n-periodic orbit of the system can be controlled to lower stable 2m-periodic orbits (m<n) by this methods. Some other numerical simulations are also presented to verify the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:This article presents an adaptive nonlinear delayed feedback control scheme for stabilizing the unstable periodic orbit of unknown fractional-order chaotic systems. The proposed control framework uses the Lyapunov approach and sliding mode control technique to guarantee that the closed-loop system is asymptotically stable on a periodic trajectory sufficiently close to the unstable periodic orbit of the system. The proposed method has two significant advantages. First, it employs a direct adaptive control method, making it easy to implement this method on systems with unknown parameters. Second, the framework requires only the period of the unstable periodic orbit. The robustness of the closed-loop system against system uncertainties and external disturbances with unknown bounds is guaranteed. Simulations on fractional-order duffing and gyro systems are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results. The simulation results demonstrate that our approach outperforms the previously developed linear feedback control method for stabilizing unstable periodic orbits in fractional-order chaotic systems, particularly in reducing steady-state error and achieving faster convergence of tracking error.

Abstract:Aimed at chaos anti-control of a class of nonlinear system with uncertainties,an inverse system method of robust chaos anti-control was put forward.Adaptive inverse chaos anti-control was realized by tracking differentiators,integrating inverse system and filtering.After states of reference chaos system and the controlled system were obtained through tracking differentiators,the expected dynamic system was designed according to tracking performance demands,and certain order inverse of the controlled system was constructed by using inverse system theory.A filter was designed based on the requirements of magnitude,phase adjustments and noise cancellation,and the controlled system states were forced to track the states of reference chaos system.The results show that the dynamic uncertainties of the controlled system can be determined precisely in real-time by the output tracking differentiator precisely.The controller design is free of the constraints of Lyapunov exponents' allocation and the model of the controlled system.

Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of local synchronization of chaotic neural networks with sampled-data and actuator saturation. A new time-dependent Lyapunov functional is proposed for the synchronization error systems. The advantage of the constructed Lyapunov functional lies in the fact that it is positive definite at sampling times but not necessarily between sampling times, and makes full use of the available information about the actual sampling pattern. A local stability condition of the synchronization error systems is derived, based on which a sampled-data controller with respect to the actuator saturation is designed to ensure that the master neural networks and slave neural networks are locally asymptotically synchronous. Two optimization problems are provided to compute the desired sampled-data controller with the aim of enlarging the set of admissible initial conditions or the admissible sampling upper bound ensuring the local synchronization of the considered chaotic neural networks. A numerical example is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design technique.
