Abstract:The rising urban wastewater discharge into waterways resulted in harmful environmental effects. Microalgae can bioremediate wastewaters by removing contaminants such as nitrogen and phosphorus and can be rather tolerant to toxic compounds. Managing the anaerobic digestate resulting from sludge treatment in wastewater treatment plants faces some obstacles related to its high contaminant content. This work aims to study the ability of the microalga Chlorella vulgaris to perform the tertiary treatment of urban wastewater, assessing its growth, nutrient removal and the effect of the addition of digestate at different concentrations in this treatment phase. A secondary effluent was supplied with 1% (M1), 5% (M5) and 10% (M10) (v/v) of anaerobic digestate and used to culture microalgae. An assay using only secondary effluent was also performed (S). C. vulgaris grew successfully in all effluents except for the M10, and the highest specific growth rate was obtained in the M1 assay, 0.35 ± 0.01 d -1 . Ammonium-nitrogen was completely removed in the S, M1 and M5 assays (>99.9%). Microalgae successfully removed phosphate-phosphorus from the tested effluents, achieving a negligible concentration in the M1 assay and a removal efficiency of 96.2 ± 0.2%, 51 ± 2%, and 43 ± 3% in S, M5 and M10, respectively. These results showed that microalgal cultures could efficiently remediate the secondary effluent and its mixture with 1% (v/v) of anaerobic digestate, achieving nutrient concentrations below the current legislation limits and the more restrictive limits predicted for future legislation.

Abstract:Microalgae-based wastewater treatment is a promising technology efficient for nutrient recycling and biomass production. Studies continuously optimize processes to reduce costs and increase productivity. However, changes in the operational conditions affect not only biomass productivity but the dynamics of the overall microbial community. This study characterizes a microalgae culture from an 80 m2 pilot-scale raceway reactor fed with untreated urban wastewater. Operational conditions such as pH, dissolved oxygen control strategies (On-off, PI, Event-based, no control), and culture height were varied to assess microbial population changes. Results demonstrate that increased culture height significantly promotes higher microalgal and bacterial diversity. pH, dissolved oxygen and culture height highly affects nitrifying bacteria activity and nitrogen accumulation. Furthermore, the system exhibited high disinfection capability with average Logarithmic Reduction Values (LRV) of 3.36 for E. coli and 2.57 for Clostridium perfringens. Finally, the fungi species detected included Chytridiomycota and Ascomycota, while purple photosynthetic bacteria were also found in significant abundance within the medium.
Acclimated green microalgae consortium to treat sewage in an alternative urban WWTP in a coastal area of Central Italy

Abstract:This study exposed a microalgal consortium formed by Auxenochlorella protothecoides, Tetradesmus obliquus, and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to six mixed wastewater media containing different proportions of primary (P) or secondary (S) effluents diluted in centrate (C). Algae could grow at centrate concentrations up to 50 %, showing no significant differences between effluents. After acclimation, microalgae cultivated in 50%P-50%C and 50%S-50%C grew at a rate similar to that of control cultures (0.59-0.66 d-1). These results suggest that the consortium acclimated to both sewage streams by modulating the proportion of the species and their metabolism. Acclimation also altered the photosynthetic activity of wastewater-grown samples compared to the control, probably due to partial photoinhibition, changes in consortium composition, and changes in metabolic activity. No major differences were observed between the two streams with respect to biochemical composition, biomass yield, or bioremediation capacity of the cultivated algae but algae grown in the secondary effluent showed qualitatively higher exopolysaccharides (EPS) production than algae grown in primary. Regarding wastewater remediation, microalgae grown in both WW media showed proficient nutrient removal efficiencies (close to 100 %); however, the final pH value (close to 11) would be controversial if the system were upscaled as it is over the legal limit and would cause phosphorus precipitation, so that CO2 addition would be required. The theoretical scale-up of the microalgae system could achieve water treatment costs of 0.109 €·m-3, which was significantly lower than the costs of typical activated sludge systems.
Microalgal Cultivation in Secondary Effluents: Enhancement of Algal Biomass, Nutrient Removal, and Lipid Productivity

Abstract:The growth performance, nutrient removal, lipid accumulation and morphological changes of Cyanobacterium aponinum OUC1 and Scenedesmus obliquus which were cultured in secondary effluents from two wastewater treatment plants: Tuandao Wastewater Treatment Plant (ETD) and Licun River Wastewater Treatment Plant (ELR) were investigated. The results showed that both C. aponinum OUC1 and S. obliquus have superior growth performances in both undiluted effluents, while the better of them was that in ETD effluent, with cell densities of C. aponinum OUC1 and S. obliquus increased by 159% and 66% over that of BG11 (control), respectively. Regarding nutrient removal, S. obliquus could completely remove inorganic phosphorus, and decrease ammonia nitrogen in ETD effluent by 81%. In addition, both C. aponinum OUC1 and S. obliquus cultivated in ETD exhibited extraordinary potential for biofuel production, increasing lipid productivities by 133% and 89% of that cultivated in ELR, respectively. As to ultrastructural changes, the differences in the lipoidal globules and glycogen granules of S. obliquus and C. aponinum OUC1 among the ETD and ELR treatments were mostly related to phosphorus limitations. The findings from this research reveal the probability using the secondary effluents as cultivation media to enhance algal biomass, nutrient removal and lipid productivity.

Abstract:Further treatment of secondary effluents before their discharge into the receiving water bodies could alleviate water eutrophication. In this study, the Chlorella proteinosa was cultured in a membrane photobioreactor to further remove nitrogen from the secondary effluents. The effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on microalgae biomass yields and nutrient removal was studied. The results showed that soluble algal products concentration reduced in the suspension at low HRT, thereby alleviating microalgal growth inhibition. In addition, the lower HRT reduced the nitrogen limitation for Chlorella proteinosa's growth through the phase-out of nitrogen-related functional bacteria. As a result, the productivity for Chlorella proteinosa increased from 6.12 mg/L/day at an HRT of 24 hr to 20.18 mg/L/day at an HRT of 8 hr. The highest removal rates of 19.7 mg/L/day, 23.8 mg/L/day, and 105.4 mg/L/day were achieved at an HRT of 8 hr for total nitrogen (TN), ammonia, and chemical oxygen demand (COD), respectively. However, in terms of removal rate, TN and COD were the largest when HRT is 24 hr, which were 74.5% and 82.6% respectively. The maximum removal rate of ammonia nitrogen was 99.2% when HRT was 8 hr.
Microalgae and co-culture for polishing pollutants of anaerobically treated agro-processing industry wastewater: the case of slaughterhouse

Abstract:Anaerobically treated slaughterhouse effluent is rich in nutrients, organic matter, and cause eutrophication if discharged to the environment without proper further treatment. Moreover, phosphorus and nitrogen in agro-processing industry wastewaters are mainly removed in the tertiary treatment phase. The objective of this study is to evaluate the pollutant removal efficiency of Chlorella and Scenedesmus species as well as their co-culture treating two-phase anaerobic digester effluent through microalgae biomass production. The dimensions of the rectangular photobioreactor used to conduct the experiment are 15 cm in height, 20 cm in width, and 30 cm in length. Removal efficiencies between 86.74–93.11%, 96.74–97.47%, 91.49–92.91%, 97.94–99.46%, 89.22–94.28%, and 91.08–95.31% were attained for chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, nitrate, ammonium, total phosphorous, and orthophosphate by Chlorella species, Scenedesmus species, and their co-culture, respectively. The average biomass productivity and biomass yield of Chlorella species, Scenedesmus species, and their co-culture were 1.4 ± 0.1, 1.17 ± 0.12, 1.5 ± 0.13 g/L, and 0.18, 0.21, and 0.23 g/L*day, respectively. The final effluent quality in terms of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and total phosphorous attained by Chlorella species and the co-culture were below the permissible discharge limit for slaughterhouse effluent standards in the country (Ethiopia). The results of the study showed that the use of microalgae as well as their co-culture for polishing the nutrients and residual organic matter in the anaerobically treated agro-processing industry effluent offers a promising result for wastewater remediation and biomass production. In general, Chlorella and Scenedesmus species microalgae and their co-culture can be applied as an alternative for nutrient removal from anaerobically treated slaughterhouse wastewater as well as biomass production that can be used for bioenergy.

Abstract:Natural resources are becoming increasingly scarce, and the need to control their consumption and recycle their use is growing. Water is one of the essential resources for human survival. Therefore, there has been an increasing interest in ways to save, recycle and treat water supplies. Aquaculture is one of the most polluting activities as it produces a significant wastewater volume, which needs proper treatment before being discharged into the environment or recycled. Microalgae are a potential solution for wastewater treatment. Due to their numerous advantages, the use of microalgal biomass is being studied, and, at present, there is already a market and room for profit in the sale of microalgal components in various forms, such as animal and human supplements. From a biorefinery point of view, it is important to take advantage of all the qualities and benefits that microalgae have by combining their great capacity to treat wastewater and exploit the produced biomass, analysing its composition for subsequent valorisation, for example. In this study, Chlorella vulgaris was used to treat aquaculture wastewater from a trout farm aquaculture facility, and the treatment efficiency was evaluated. To valorise the resulting biomass, its composition was also assessed. C. vulgaris successfully grew in the effluent with growth rates of 0.260 ± 0.014 d−1 and with average productivity of 32.9 ± 1.6 mg L−1 d−1. The achieved removal efficiencies were 93.5 ± 2.1% for total nitrogen, 98.0 ± 0.1% for nitrate-nitrogen and 92.7 ± 0.1% for phosphate-phosphorus. Concerning biomass composition, the lipids (15.82 ± 0.15%), carbohydrates (48.64 ± 0.83%), and pigment contents (0.99 ± 0.04% for chlorophyll a + b and 0.21 ± 0.04% for carotenoids) were similar to the values of similar studies. However, the protein content obtained (17.93 ± 1.21%) was lower than the ones mentioned in the literature.

Cultivation of Microalgae in Liquid Digestate to Remove Nutrients and Organic Contaminants

Abstract:The goal of this research was to assess the efficiency of the liquid digestate treatment conducted with algal, environmental isolates illuminated entirely with sunlight. The photobioreactor was exposed to natural conditions and evaluated based on the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen compounds, and soluble phosphates. Microalgal and bacterial communities growing during the treatment process were studied. A high removal rate of soluble COD (= 91%) and nutrients (= 86%) was achieved. The average concentrations of nitrogen, phosphates, and COD in the reactor effluent were 95 mgN/L, 49 mg/L, and 735 mg O 2 /L, respectively. The overall algae-bacteria biomass productivity of 22 mg/L/d, calculated on the total suspended solids (TSS) basis, was recorded. The microbial analysis revealed the dominance of Tetradesmus obliquus followed by Microglena sp. in the first 14 weeks of the experiment. At the end of the experimental run, Chlorella sorokiniana cells appeared as a result of illumination intensity changes. The dominating bacteria belonged to Firmicutes (26.31%), Patescibacteria (17.38%), and Actinobacteriota (14.86%) and could have been responsible for the transformation of nitrogen and oxidation of organic contaminants. The research demonstrated that natural sunlight can successfully be used for efficient liquid digestate treatment with the algae-bacterial community.

Effects on the growth characteristic by mixed culture of three energy microalgae species using domestic secondary effluent

Abstract:Energy microalgae cultivation in wastewater system is very promising for the combination of water purification and energy production. The coupled technology is limited by low biomass productivity of microalgae in wastewater. Mixed culture of specific energy microalgae is a potential solution to address the problem. In order to find out the proper mixed microalgae strains, Scenedesmussp. LX1,Chlorella ellipsoidea YJ1 andHaematococcus pluvisliswere chosen to study the growth characteristic among different microalgal species combinations under secondary effluent of domestic wastewater. Comparisons of the growth characteristic and biomass productivity were conducted among different microalgal species combinations. The results indicated that different microalgal species combination ofScenedesmus sp. LX1,Chlorella ellipsoideaYJ1 and Haematococcus pluvialis can grow well, with biomass of every microalgae growing up to 100 mg·L-1 on day 10. Compared withScenedesmus sp. LX1 andChlorella ellipsoidea YJ1,Haematococcus pluvislis exhibited higher biomass growth potential. The intrinsic growth rate of the three microalgae in the mixed culture was higher than the mono-culture of them. The highest intrinsic growth rate ofScenedesmus sp. LX1 andHaematococcus pluvislis (1.36 d-1, 0.97 d-1, respectively) was obtained under the mixed culture of them.Scenedesmussp. LX1 andHaematococcus pluvislisin the mixed culture of them behaved higher specific growth rate (0.59 d-1, 0.42 d-1, respectively) than each mono-culture of them. Compared with the mono-culture of Scenedesmus sp. LX1,Chlorella ellipsoideaYJ1 and Haematococcus pluvialis, the biomass productivity was enhanced in the mixed cultures. The biomass productivity in the mixed culture ofScenedesmus sp. LX1 andHaematococcus pluvialis was increased by 64% and 42% than the monoculture ofScenedesmus sp. LX1 andHaematococcus pluvialis, respectively. The mixed culture ofScenedesmus sp. LX1 andHaematococcus pluvialis are potential strains used in energy microalgae cultivation in secondary effluent of domestic wastewater.

Abstract:The presence of micropollutants and pathogens in sanitary wastewater and surface water is a growing concern that impacts public health, environmental balance and the maintenance of water supply services. To improve sanitary wastewater treatment, it is necessary to develop and improve sustainable technologies. Among the available options, microalgae-based systems stand out for their efficiency and generation of value-added byproducts. To study the impact of luminosity and the presence of micropollutants (13 selected) on the removal of E. coli and total coliforms from real anaerobically treated wastewater, a pilot flat-panel photobioreactor (50 L) was operated in batch mode in a tropical climate region. This is the first study to evaluate whether micropollutants interfere with coliform groups, considering a microalgae-based system and an experiment in a tropical climate region. E. coli had better removal (from 10 4 to 10 1 CFU 100 mL −1 ) than did total coliforms (from 10 4 to 10 3 CFU 100 mL −1 ). The removal of E. coli was more strongly linked to luminosity and temperature, while the removal of total coliforms was influenced by the presence of the selected micropollutants.

Abstract:Microalgae paves the way towards a negative emission technology; however, single-pot systems combining nutrient removal and wastewater treatment are scarce in the literature. In this study, three different types of wastewater (university, municipality, and dairy industries) were studied using microalgae towards treatment and nutrient removal using Scenedesmus sp. and Chlorella sp. The experiments were carried out in 20 L reactors, for 9 days, where in achieving a maximum of algal growth rate of 770 and 725 mg/L for Scenedesmus sp. and Chlorella sp., respectively. Of the three wastewaters, dairy wastewater had the highest influent COD (3488 mg/L), which was reduced by 92% after 9 days. The pigment content was highest after 6 days (0.22 ± 0.03%), and there was no significant improvement after 9 days, suggesting a trade-off between nutrient removal, photosynthetic performance, and COD reduction. Microalgae act as a sustainable solution and negative emission technology to solve the crisis of wastewater treatment, nutrient removal and production of high-value products.

Abstract:Microalgal-based wastewater treatment and CO2 sequestration from flue gases with subsequent biomass production represent a low-cost, eco-friendly, and effective procedure of removing nutrients and other pollutants from wastewater and assists in the decrease of greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, it supports a circular economy model. This is based on the ability of microalgae to utilise inorganic nutrients, mainly nitrogen and phosphorous, as well as organic and inorganic carbon, for their growth, and simultaneously reduce these substances in the water. However, the production of microalgae biomass under outdoor cultivation is dependent on several abiotic and biotic factors, which impact its profitability and sustainability. Thus, this study's goal was to evaluate the factors affecting the production of microalgae biomass on pilot-scale open raceway ponds under Northern Sweden's summer conditions with the help of a mathematical model. For this purpose, a microalgae consortium and a monoculture of Chlorella vulgaris were used to inoculate outdoor open raceway ponds. In line with the literature, higher biomass concentrations and nutrient removals were observed in ponds inoculated with the microalgae consortium. Our model, based on Droop's concept of macronutrient quotas inside the cell, corresponded well to the experimental data and, thus, can successfully be applied to predict biomass production, nitrogen uptake and storage, and dissolved oxygen production in microalgae consortia.
Growth potential, biochemical properties and nutrient removal efficiency of some freshwater microalgae and their consortia from wastewater

Abstract:Impact of varying nitrate (NO 3 -N) and phosphate (PO 4 -P) concentrations and sewage water (SW) on the growth, nutrient removal, lipid accumulation, enzymatic antioxidant activity and phytochemical contents of the microalgae Scenedesmus dimorphus, Coelastrella tenuitheca, Chroococcus turgidus and Parachlorella kessleri under monoculture and their consortia have been investigated. High growth rates were observed for all the four algae in both mono and mixed culture conditions at enhanced concentrations of N (1500 mg/L NO 3 -N) and P (40 mg/L PO 4 -P). The species Scenedesmus dimorphus outperformed other microalgae growing in SW in efficiently removing nitrogen. The algal consortia of mixed species was found to be more effective in phosphorus removal. The carbohydrate and protein contents were highest in Parachlorella kessleri, about 37% and 44%, respectively, in SW cultivation. The algal consortia demonstrated highest starch content (4%) in nitrogen deprived growth medium. Highest lipid production (43%) was observed in the SW culture. The species Coelastrella tenuitheca, Chroococcus turgidus and Scenedesmus dimorphus irrespective of the growth media indicated significant accumulation of phenol, flavonoid and tannin. The DPPH, catalase and ascorbic peroxidase assay showed pronounced antioxidant activity. Nutrient (N and P) enrichment exhibited enhanced antioxidant enzymatic activity and accumulation of cell storage products. This study explores the response mechanisms and nutrient removal capabilities of various microalgal species and their consortia in sewage water treated media. The results provide valuable insights into the potential role of algae in wastewater treatment processes, revealing high tolerance and considerable NO 3 -N and PO 4 -P removal capabilities of Scenedesmus dimorphus and algal consortia toward different wastewaters. The results of the study are relevant for the development of sustainable solutions for water pollution management. The algae and their consortia grown in wastewater showed high levels of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, bioactive compounds accumulation and antioxidant activity rendering them a sustainable and renewable resource for various industrial applications.

Abstract:The use of microalgae for wastewater treatment has been proposed as a cost-effective method to produce biofuels while remediating waste streams. This study examined the microalgae biomass production rate, wastewater treatment efficiency, and prokaryotic organism microbiome associated with microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana cultivated on anaerobic digestate effluent. Final microalgae biomass concentrations from nine photobioreactors were highly variable and had values that ranged between 0.14 g/L and 0.90 g/L. Nutrient removal efficiencies for TN (total nitrogen), N-NH4 (ammonium nitrogen), and COD (chemical oxygen demand) ranged from 34% to 67%, 65% to 97%, and−60% to 14%, respectively. Analysis of individual OTUs (operational taxonomic units) from the microbial community revealed that microalgae biomass concentrations were significantly correlated with the relative abundance of OTUs in the genus Pusillimonas. Predictive metagenomic analyses identified additional correlations associated with biomass production and nutrient removal. These results suggest that the microbial community present during microalgae cultivation on wastewater can impact the performance of the system for biomass production and wastewater treatment.

Bioprospecting of microalgae for integrated biomass production and phytoremediation of unsterilized wastewater and anaerobic digestion centrate

Abstract:Eighteen microalgae, including two local isolates, were evaluated for their ability to grow and remove nutrients from unsterilized primary or secondary wastewater effluents as well as wastewater supplemented with nutrient-rich anaerobic digester centrate (ADC). Most of the tested species except several phylogenetically clustered Chlorella sorokiniana including local isolates and Scenedesmus strains were unable to grow efficiently. This may reflect the presence of certain genetic traits important for robust growth in the unsterilized wastewater. The maximum algal-specific growth rates and biomass density obtained in these bacterial-contaminated cultures were in the range of 0.8–1 day−1 and 250–350 mg L−1, respectively. ADC supplementation was especially helpful to biologically treated secondary effluent with its lower initial macronutrient and micronutrient content. As a result of algal growth, total nitrogen and orthophosphate levels were reduced by as much as 90 and 70 %, respectively. Biological assimilation was estimated to be the main mechanism of nitrogen removal in primary and secondary effluents with ammonia volatilization and bacterial nitrification-denitrification contributing for cultures supplemented with ADC. Assimilation by algae served as the principal mechanism of orthophosphate remediation in secondary wastewater cultures, while chemical precipitation appeared also to be important for orthophosphate removal in primary wastewater. Overall, cultivation of microalgae in primary and primary + 5 % ADC may be more favorable from an economical and sustainability perspective due to elimination of the costly and energy-intensive biological treatment step. These findings demonstrate that unsterilized wastewater and ADC can serve as critical nutrient sources for biomass generation and that robust microalgae can be potent players in wastewater phytoremediation.

On the nitrogen and phosphorus removal in algal photobioreactors

Abstract:This study shows results of nitrogen and phosphorus removal by microalgae (tertiary treatment) in a prototype of tubular photobioreactor tested under controlled and uncontrolled conditions. The wastewater was the supernatant coming from a secondary settler of a municipal wastewater activated sludge treatment plant without nitrification and denitrification units. The algal biomass was directly selected from the supernatant and it was principally composed of genus Scenedesmus (autochthonous algae). All the experiments evaluated both nitrogen and phosphorus removal and biomass and lipid production. A satisfactory nutrients removal – about 99.9% for the nitrogen and phosphorus – and a specific biomass productivity of 0.25g/ld have been obtained in the indoor photobioreactor; less satisfactory results have been reached in the outdoor photobioreactor because of ambient condition instability and limiting nutrients concentration.

Abstract:Wastewater contains many organic and inorganic contaminants that can cause serious damage to the environment and health of people, Therefore, they have to be eliminated before being downloaded into sensitive areas. Different methods of wastewater purification have been used for contaminants removal. However, they present some technical and economic limitations. Thus, new methods of nutrients removal by microalgae based on phytoremediation techniques, become promising methods due to its viability. The objective of wastewater treatment is to improve and purify the water. For that, the removal of all or some of the nutrients present in water is carried out, resulting in a reusable or suitable water to be returned to its natural environment. This study investigates the capacity of Chlorella Vulgaris microalga as a potential candidate for removing the phosphorous and organic matter from wastewater. The strain of microalga was cultivated in synthetic wastewater at room temperature with artificial illumination and aeration. Algal growth parameters such as pH, chemical oxygen demand, phosphorus, cell number, optical density and dry weight were measured during experimental period. Under these conditions, microalgae were able to remove the phosphorus concentration by more than 99%. By other hand, the chemical oxygen demand was reduced at 71 %. After 9 days of cultivation, the biomass concentration increased from 0.05 to 0.57 g/L. The results of this study suggest that growing Chlorella Vulgaris microalgae in wastewater offers a new option of applying algae to manage the nutrient load. After then obtained biomass can be used for biofuel production.

Abstract:Commercial microalgae production is often interrupted by contamination, leading to short production cycles, reinoculation needs, and culture collapses, significantly increasing costs. This study focuses on investigating Recirculated Sedimentation Application (RSA) to control contamination in microalgae culture systems used for wastewater treatment. Chlorella vulgaris culture was grown in an unsterilized mixture of tertiary treatment effluent and centrate of anaerobic digestion wastewater sludge over a 90-day experimental period. 60 L raceway reactor was operated under a light intensity of 275 μM m −2 .s −1 with a 16:8 h light-dark photoperiod. To evaluate the effect of RSA on biological-based problems, the experiment was conducted in three phases. The benefits of utilizing RSA were established through the following observations: effective removal of contaminants at an acceptable level without releasing the culture; extension of the biofilm formation time on the inner walls; inhibition of heterotrophic bacteria and nitrification; enhancement of the suspended solids retention capacity of the raceway tank (up to 770 mg.L −1 ); and improvement in ammonium removal rate to approximately 30 mg.L −1 d −1 . The ideal salinity level for both ammonium removal and biomass concentration in RSA should be below 0.02%. These findings demonstrate the potential of phycoremediation for sustainable wastewater treatment and contribute to environmental bioremediation strategies. This study investigates the effects of recirculated sedimentation using freshly formed and mature algae, based on settleability differences, for microalgae cultivation in open ponds with unsterilized wastewater, with the aim of maintain a stable and productive biomass community. Additionally, this study contributes to expand the current knowledge on several fronts: including removing contaminants without discharging the culture, improving biomass holding capacity of the reactor, reducing biofilm formation on reactor walls, suppressing bacterial growth in the culture media and enhancing ammonium removal rate. To the best of our knowledge, there have not been no previous studies to evaluate the effectiveness of sedimentation for these purposes.

Abstract:Nutrient bioremediation processes in wastewater are becoming a prevalent focus of research, with microalgae emerging as prominent players. Such microorganisms provide a compelling alternative to traditional sanitation approaches. In light of this emerging interest, the main objective of this study was to explore diverse growth conditions of a native microalgae-bacteria consortium in domestic wastewater, aiming at nutrient bioremediation and biomass production. The investigation was performed on a laboratory scale through Schott® 2.0 L glass bottle photobioreactors, utilizing anaerobically digested wastewater to mitigate its polluting potential effectively. At first, the impact of increasing inflow of CO2 was evaluated. It was found that the addition of 5% CO2 yielded the most favorable outcomes, with the remarkable 96.5% of total phosphorus removal within four days alongside a biomass production rate of 0.04 g.L-1.d-1. In later steps, variations in light intensity were analyzed, and with 304±3 μmol.m-2.s-1, yielded the most promising results, with total phosphorus removal of 97.1% within two days and biomass production rate of 0.31 g.L-1.d-1. Finally, the influence of temperature was assessed, uncovering 97.2% total phosphorus removal within two days, complemented by a biomass production rate of 0.29 g.L-1.d-1. These results facilitated the development of a surface model illustrating the intricate relationship between light and temperature for this consortium. Furthermore, the consortium exhibited remarkable proficiency in nutrient removal from anaerobically digested wastewater, showcasing noteworthy resilience to temperature and light intensity fluctuations.
