Abstract:The analogy between rotating shear flow and thermal convection suggests the existence of plumes, inertial waves and plume currents in plane Poiseuille flow under spanwise rotation. The existence of these flow structures is examined with the results of three-dimensional and two-dimensional three-component direct numerical simulations. The dynamics of plumes near the unstable side is embodied in a truncated exponential distribution of turbulent fluctuations. For large rotation numbers, inertial waves are identified near the stable side, and these can be used to explain the abnormal flow statistics, such as the large root-mean-square of the streamwise velocity fluctuation and the nearly negligible Reynolds shear stress. For small or medium rotation numbers, plumes generated from the unstable side form large-scale plume currents and the patterns of the plume currents show different capabilities in scalar transport.

Abstract:The dissipation function in turbulent plane Poiseuille flows (PPFs) and plane Couette flows (PCFs) subject to spanwise rotations is analyzed. It is found that, in the PCFs without system rotations, the mean part is constant while the fluctuation part follows a logarithmic law, resulting in a similar logarithmic skin friction law as PPFs. However, if the flow system rotates in the spanwise direction, no obvious dependence on the rotation number can be evaluated. In the PPFs with rotations, the dissipation function shows an increase with the rotation number, while in the PCFs with rotations, when the rotation number increases, the dissipation function first decreases and then increases.

Abstract:The objective of this work is to investigate linear modal and algebraic instability in Poiseuille flows with fluids close to their vapour–liquid critical point. Close to this critical point, the ideal gas assumption does not hold and large non-ideal fluid behaviours occur. As a representative non-ideal fluid, we consider supercritical carbon dioxide ( $\text{CO}_{2}$ ) at a pressure of 80 bar, which is above its critical pressure of 73.9 bar. The Poiseuille flow is characterized by the Reynolds number ( $Re=\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{w}^{\ast }u_{r}^{\ast }h^{\ast }/\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{w}^{\ast }$ ), the product of the Prandtl ( $Pr=\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}_{w}^{\ast }C_{pw}^{\ast }/\unicode[STIX]{x1D705}_{w}^{\ast }$ ) and Eckert numbers ( $Ec=u_{r}^{\ast 2}/C_{pw}^{\ast }T_{w}^{\ast }$ ) and the wall temperature that in addition to pressure determine the thermodynamic reference condition. For low Eckert numbers, the flow is essentially isothermal and no difference with the well-known stability behaviour of incompressible flows is observed. However, if the Eckert number increases, the viscous heating causes gradients of thermodynamic and transport properties, and non-ideal gas effects become significant. Three regimes of the laminar base flow can be considered: the subcritical (temperature in the channel is entirely below its pseudo-critical value), transcritical and supercritical temperature regimes. If compared to the linear stability of an ideal gas Poiseuille flow, we show that the base flow is modally more unstable in the subcritical regime, inviscid unstable in the transcritical regime and significantly more stable in the supercritical regime. Following the principle of corresponding states, we expect that qualitatively similar results will be obtained for other fluids at equivalent thermodynamic states.

Abstract:The instability of the two-dimensional Poiseuille flow in a long channel and the subsequent transition using thermodynamic approach. The idea is to view the transition process as an initial value problem with the initial condition being Poiseuille flow plus noise, which is considered as our ensemble. Using the mean energy of the velocity fluctuation and the skin friction coefficient as the macrostate variable, we analyze the transition process triggered by the initial noises with different amplitudes. A first order transition is observed at the critical Reynolds number Re. 5772 in the limit of zero noise. An action function, which relates the mean energy with the noise amplitude, is defined and computed. The action function depends only on the Reynolds number, and represents the cost, for the noise to trigger a transition from the laminar flow. The correlation function of the spatial structure is analyzed.
Long-time instability of planar Poiseuille-type flow in compressible fluid

Abstract:It is well-known that at the high Reynolds number, the linearized Navier-Stokes equations around the inviscid stable shear profile admit growing mode solutions due to the destabilizing effect of the viscosity. This phenomenon, called Tollmien-Schlichting instability, has been rigorously justified by Grenier-Guo-Nguyen [Adv. Math. 292 (2016); Duke J. Math. 165 (2016)] for Poiseuille flows and boundary layers in the incompressible fluid. To reveal this intrinsic instability mechanism in the compressible setting, in this paper, we study the long-time instability of the Poiseuille flow in a channel. Note that this instability arises in a low-frequency regime instead of a high-frequency regime for the Prandtl boundary layer. The proof is based on the quasi-compressible-Stokes iteration introduced by Yang-Zhang in [50] and subtle analysis of the dispersion relation for the instability. Note that we do not require symmetric conditions on the background shear flow or perturbations.

Abstract:The gas flow and heat transfer characteristics in micro Poiseuille flow in slip and transition regime were studied numerically using two methods: direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method and the Burnett equations. The traditional mathematical model of the Navier-Stokes equations becomes invalid because of their linear constitutive relations of viscous stress and heat flux. The molecule based DSMC method is widely used in transition flow regime and has achieved great success. The high- order continuum model of the Burnett equations is recently introduced to simulate the flow in small devices. These two methods are both adopted in the present study and they show good agreement with each other. But DSMC method is more expensive in computational time. The flow and heat transfer characteristics of Poiseuille flow in microchannels are then studied. It is found that with the increase of Knudsen number, the Poiseuille number decreases while Nusselt number increases. The local Poiseuille number decreases along the whole channel while the local Nusselt number decreases rapidly first and then increases slowly afterwards.
Puff-like instability in laminar to turbulence supercritical transition of round jets

Abstract:We explore the laminar to turbulence transition of round jets at low Reynolds number (Re < 1000) using a novel experimental setup and linear stability theory (LST). The setup has a large domain and a low disturbance environment which increases the critical Re to approximately 500, permitting the appearance of a hitherto unknown puff-like instability (PFI). The instability is identified in the self-similar region of the jet through clean flow visualizations (FV) and further corroborated by particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. For 400< Re <700, the flow exhibits PFI embedded in a puff-train encapsulated by a laminar flow analogous to 'puffs' in pipe-flow transition; the latter being symbolic of the finite-amplitude disturbance transition scenario. The observation that PFI convects close to the average local velocity with an inflectional velocity profile further strengthens the analogy. LST predicts that PFI is effectively a superposition of the helical mode (HM) pair with azimuthal wavenumbers n=+-1. Hence, PFI can also appear in the infinitesimal-amplitude supercritical route to transition of linearly unstable flows.

Abstract:We perform a series of experiments to study the velocity fluctuations generated by the flow past fixed spheres. Planar particle image velocimetry (PIV) is carried out to characterize the properties of the liquid fluctuation. The fluctuation induced by the spheres can be decomposed into the temporal fluctuation and the spatial fluctuation, which represent the contribution of flow instability and spatial inhomogeneity, respectively. In particularly, we focus on the contributions of temporal fluctuations and spatial fluctuations between low and high Reynolds number. At low Reynolds number (20 < Re ≤ 200), the total fluctuation mostly comes from the spatial fluctuation and increases as the area of velocity deficit in the wake of the sphere increases. The temporal fluctuation cannot be neglected at larger Reynolds number (200 < Re ≤ 700), and the total velocity fluctuation is induced by both flow instability and spatial inhomogeneity. Furthermore, the energy distribution in the flow direction and the span direction also changes drastically as the Reynolds number increases. The wavenumber spectra of fluctuations show a −3 slope at large scale, −5/3 slope at small scale. The starting scale of the −3 slope decreases with the increase of the Reynolds number. Specifically, it is consistent with the integral length scale Λ for Re > 200, but not for Re < 200. The ending scale is around λ = 0.5d and decreases slightly as Re increases.

A weakly nonlinear stability analysis of isothermal Poiseuille flow in a fluid overlying porous domain is proposed and investigated in this article. The nonlinear interactions are studied by imposing finite amplitude disturbances to the classical model deliberated in Chang, Chen, and Straughan [J. Fluid Mech., 564 (2006), pp. 287–303]. The order parameter theory is used to ascertain the cubic Landau equation, and the regimes of instability for the bifurcations are determined henceforth. The well-established controlling parameters viz. the depth ratio [math] depth of fluid domain/depth of porous domain), the Beavers–Joseph constant [math], and the Darcy number [math] are inquired upon for the bifurcation phenomena. The imposed finite amplitude disturbances are viewed for bifurcations along the neutral stability curves and away from the critical point as a function of the wave number [math] and the Reynolds number [math]. The even-fluid-layer (porous) mode along the neutral stability curves correlates to the subcritical (supercritical) bifurcation phenomena. On perceiving the bifurcations as a function of [math] and [math] by moving away from the bifurcation/critical point, subcritical bifurcation is observed for increasing [math] and decreasing [math]. In contrast to only fluid flow through a channel, it is found that the inclusion of porous domain aids in the early appearance of subcritical bifurcation when [math]. A considerable difference between the computed skin friction coefficient for the base and the distorted state is observed for small (large) values of [math]. In addition, an intrinsic relation among the mode of instability, bifurcation phenomena, and secondary flow pattern is also observed.

Abstract:The stability of the laminar flat plate boundary layer is investigated numerically by solving the linear Orr-Sommerfeld equations for the disturbulence amplitude function. These equations include the terms of viscosity, density stratification, and diffusion. Neutral stability curve and the critical Re numbers are computed for various Richardson (Ri) numbers and Schmidt (Sc) numbers. The results show that the larger the Ri, the larger the critical Re for Sc < 10. The flow is stable for Ri < 0, when Sc is very small or the mass diffusion coefficient is very large. But for Ri > 0, the effects of diffusion are reversed for Sc < 10. For Sc > 10, the critical Re rapidly decreases to zero as the Sc increases for a given Ri number. The critical Re rapidly decreases as the Ri increases.

Abstract:The temporal instability of incompressible particle-laden Blasius boundary layer is investigated numerically using perturbation method and finite difference. The stability characteristics are calculated for varying Stokes' numbers and particle concentrations. The results, some of which agree with the calculations of earlier authors, show that the addition of fine particles tends to destabilize the flow while addition of the coarse particles has a stabilizing action. There is critical value for the effect of Stokes' number, and the value is about 1. The stabilizing effect of particles depends monotonously on the particle concentration, the critical Reynolds' number is directly proportional to the concentration in the range of stabilizing area, and vice versa for small Stokes' number. The most damped mode occurs when Stokes' number is of order 10 for different particle concentrations. The difference of perturbation velocity between the particle-laden flow and the clean gas flow is insignificant for fine particles, while the difference for coarse particles is obvious. For fine particles laden flow, the viscosity is reduced relatively because of the addition of particles, and the critical Reynolds' number is smaller than that of clean gas. For coarse particles, the interaction between particles and clean gas is remarkable because of the difference of perturbation velocity, and then the viscous dissipation tends to stabilize the flow.

Abstract:The accessibility and binding affinity of DNA are two key parameters affecting the hybridization efficiency in surface-based biosensor technologies. Better accessibility will result in a higher hybridization efficiency. Often, mixed ssDNA and mercaptohexanol monolayers are used to increase the hybridization efficiency and accessibility of surface-bound oligonucleotides to complementary target DNA. Here, no mercaptohexanol monolayer was used. We demonstrate by differential microcantilever deflection measurements at different pH that the hybridization efficiency peaks between pH 7.5 and 8.5. At low pH 4.5, hydration and electrostatic forces led to tensile surface stress, implying the reduced accessibility of the bound ssDNA probe for hybridization. In contrast, at high pH 8.5, the steric interaction between neighboring ssDNA strands was decreased by higher electrostatic repulsive forces, bending the microcantilever away from the gold surface to provide more space for the target DNA. Cantilever deflection scales with pH-dependent surface hybridization efficiency because of high target DNA accessibility. Hence, by changing the pH, the hybridization efficiency is adjusted.

This is a long-standing problem since the experiments of Reynolds in 1883. Our work lays a foundation for the theoretical analysis of hydrodynamic stability of pipe flow, which is one of the oldest yet unsolved problems of fundamental fluid dynamics.

Abstract:A weakly nonlinear stability analysis is carried out to study thermal instability induced by viscous dissipation in Poiseuille flows for binary fluid mixtures with a positive separation ratio. The impermeable lower boundary of the channel is considered adiabatic, while the impermeable upper boundary is isothermal. The linear stability of this problem has been performed by Ali Amar et al. [Phys. Fluids 34, 114101 (2022)] and showed that longitudinal rolls are the preferred mode of convection at the onset of instability. By employing weakly nonlinear theory, we derive a cubic Landau equation that describes the temporal evolution of the amplitude of convection rolls in the unstable regime. It is found that the bifurcation from the conduction state to convection rolls is always supercritical for the weak viscous dissipation intensity. Otherwise, the interplay between the viscous dissipation and the Soret effects determines the supercritical or the subcritical nature of the bifurcation. In the parameter range where the bifurcation is supercritical, we determine and discuss the Soret effects on the amplitude of convection rolls, iso-contours and the corresponding average heat transfer, and the mixing of the two fluid components. Similarities and differences with a one-component fluid case are highlighted.

Abstract:We show possibility of the Plane Couette (PC) flow instability for Reynolds number Re>Reth=140. This new result of the linear hydrodynamic stability theory is obtained on the base of refusal from the traditionally used assumption on longitudinal periodicity of the disturbances along the direction of the fluid flow. We found that earlier existing understanding on the linear stability of this flow for any arbitrary large Reynolds number is directly related with an assumption on the separation of the variables of the spatial variability for the disturbance field and their periodicity in linear theory of stability. By the refusal from the pointed assumptions also for the Plane Poiseuille (PP) flow, we get a new threshold Reynolds value Reth=1040 that with 4% accuracy agrees with the experiment contrary to more than 500% discrepancy for the earlier known estimate Reth=5772 obtained in the frame of the linear theory but when using the "normal" disturbance form (S. A. Orszag, 1971).

Abstract:The linear stability and energy stability of the plane Poiseuille flow with the isotropic and anisotropic slip boundary conditions are theoretically analyzed and numerically calculated in this paper. The asymptotic expansions of the critical parameters for the linear stability and energy stability are derived from the eigenvalue equations characterizing the least stable modes. The critical Reynolds number for the linear stability based on 1.5 times of the bulk mean streamwise velocity is found to be Rl2D≈(1+2741l2)R02D when the non-dimensional isotropic slip length l ≪ 1, where R02D≈5772 is the critical Reynolds number under the no-slip boundary condition. The critical Reynolds numbers for the linear stability are calculated for a wide range of anisotropic slip lengths and are found to be no larger than their counterparts in the isotropic slip cases with the same streamwise slip lengths. In the energy stability analyses of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional plane Poiseuille flows with the isotropic slip boundary condition, the critical Reynolds numbers are found to be RlE2D≈(1+14.95l2)R0E2D and RlE3D≈(1+8.37l2)R0E3D, where R0E2D≈87.6 and R0E3D≈49.6 are their counterparts under the no-slip boundary condition. In the three-dimensional plane Poiseuille flow with the anisotropic slip boundary condition, the critical Reynolds number for the energy stability increases with the increase in streamwise slip length lx and with the decrease in spanwise slip length lz, and its first-order approximation is Rlx,lzE3D≈[1+2.41(lx−lz)]R0E3D.

Abstract:The linear stability analysis of a pulsating flow between parallel plates at finite amplitudes and different frequencies demonstrates the presence of instability with a different nature to that initially reported in earlier studies at W o < 25 . The time-dependent stability problem is formulated using a Floquet expansion of the perturbation and solved in a matrix approach. At higher pulsation frequencies (i.e. W o > 30 ), pulsation amplitudes and sufficiently large Reynolds numbers, the time-dependent baseflow displays multiple inflexion points throughout the entire duration of the pulsation. A scaling analysis of the temporal growth rate reveals that the instability is of inviscid type and scales with R e − 1 . Freezing the time-dependent baseflow for a particular set of parameters, the growth rate is simultaneously controlled by viscosity solely acting on the perturbation, and the pulsating frequency coupling the harmonics. In the asymptotic limit ( R e → + ∞ ), we demonstrate that the temporal problem simplifies to a set of steady stability analyses dependent on the phase of the pulsation. In particular, we show that in this limit, Rayleigh and Fjørtoft’s criteria for instability become valid again, that sub-harmonic periodic orbits can be used to estimate the inviscid growth rate and match with the asymptotic values predicted from the viscous stability analysis.

Stability analysis of Boundary Layer in Poiseuille Flow Through A Modified Orr-Sommerfeld Equation

Abstract:For applications regarding transition prediction, wing design and control of boundary layers, the fundamental understanding of disturbance growth in the flat-plate boundary layer is an important issue. In the present work we investigate the stability of boundary layer in Poiseuille flow. We normalize pressure and time by inertial and viscous effects. The disturbances are taken to be periodic in the spanwise direction and time. We present a set of linear governing equations for the parabolic evolution of wavelike disturbances. Then, we derive modified Orr-Sommerfeld equations that can be applied in the layer. Contrary to what one might think, we find that Squire's theorem is not applicable for the boundary layer. We find also that normalization by inertial or viscous effects leads to the same order of stability or instability. For the 2D disturbances flow ($\theta=0$), we found the same critical Reynolds number for our two normalizations. This value coincides with the one we know for neutral stability of the known Orr-Sommerfeld equation. We noticed also that for all overs values of $k$ in the case $\theta=0$ correspond the same values of $Re_\delta$ at $c_i=0$ whatever the normalization. We therefore conclude that in the boundary layer with a 2D-disturbance, we have the same neutral stability curve whatever the normalization. We find also that for a flow with hight hydrodynamic Reynolds number, the neu- tral disturbances in the boundary layer are two-dimensional. At last, we find that transition from stability to instability or the opposite can occur according to the Reynolds number and the wave number.

Absolute and "upstream" convective instabilities in plane Couette-Poiseuille flow

Abstract:Here we report some interesting new features of the spatio-temporal instability of the incompressible plane Couette-Poiseuille flow (CPF). First of all, this flow represents the first instance of a "non-inflectional" absolute instability, within constant-viscosity formulation, which is triggered when one of the plates moves opposite to the bulk motion. More strikingly, with further increase in the negative plate motion, the absolute instability ($\textrm{AI}$) transitions to an "upstream" convective instability ($\textrm{CI}^-$), wherein an unstable wave packet moves opposite to the direction of the bulk flow. Thus, the CPF exhibits a unique $\textrm{CI}^+ \to \textrm{AI} \to \textrm{CI}^-$ transition, for a given Reynolds number ($Re$), where $\textrm{CI}^+$ denotes the commonly-observed case of a "downstream" convective instability. This type of transition has not been reported for other known examples of absolutely unstable flows. We compute the leading and trailing edge velocities for an amplifying wave packet and find that, for the plane Poiseuille flow, both these velocities approach zero as $Re \to \infty$. As a result, at high $Re$, even the slightest of negative plate motions is sufficient to trigger $\textrm{AI}$ and subsequently $\textrm{CI}^-$, as observed for the CPF. The wave-packet dispersion first increases with $Re$, followed by a decrease, which points to a peculiar "dual" role of viscosity in sustaining $\textrm{AI}$ in the CPF, namely, viscosity promotes sustenance of $\textrm{AI}$ at moderate Reynolds numbers but suppresses it at low and high Reynolds numbers. These results can be well understood within the Ginzburg-Landau framework, and therefore can be expected to have a wider applicability.

Nonlinear stability for 3-D plane Poiseuille flow in a finite channel

Abstract: In this paper, we study the nonlinear stability for the 3-D plane Poiseuille flow $(1-y^2,0,0)$ at high Reynolds number $Re$ in a finite channel $\mathbb{T}\times [-1,1 ]\times \mathbb{T}$ with non-slip boundary condition. We prove that if the initial velocity $v_0$ satisfies $$\|v_0-(1-y^2,0,0)\|_{H^{\frac{5}{2},2}}\leq c_0 Re^{-\frac{7}{4}}$$ for some $c_0>0$ independent of $Re$, then the solution of 3-D Naiver-Stokes equations is global in time and does not transit away from the plane Poiseuille flow. To our knowledge, this is the first nonlinear stability result for the 3-D plane Poiseuille flow and the transition threshold is accordant with the numerical result by Lundbladh et al. \cite{LHR}.
