Abstract:Cu2ZnSnS4-xSex (CZTS) is an important semiconductor with significant potential for applications in the next generation of solar cells. CZTS has an optimal band gap (similar to 1.5 eV) and contains no expensive or toxic elements. However, CZTS-based solar cells suffer from low efficiency because of poor crystal quality, which is partly caused by secondary phase formation during synthesis. We use density functional theory+U calculations to systematically investigate the stabilities of three CZTS phases: kesterite, stannite, and wurtzite. In agreement with previous experiment and theory, we confirm that these three phases have very similar formation energies. This finding is consistent with the known difficulties in synthesizing pure kesterite CZTS, the phase that is desirable for photovoltaic applications. To overcome this problem, we characterize surfaces and interfaces of CZTS and are able to identify certain "beneficial surfaces" that could be exploited to potentially provide extra stability for the kesterite phase. We propose the zinc blende ZnS (001) surface as a substrate to induce formation of these beneficial surfaces and to stabilize the kesterite phase, thereby serving as an effective crystallization template for the fabrication of high-performance CZTS solar cells.

Abstract:Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)(4) (CZTSSe) has received considerable attention as a material capable of driving the development of low-cost and high performance photovoltaics. Its high absorption coefficient, optimal band gap, and non-toxic, naturally abundant elemental constituents give it a number of advantages over most thin film absorber materials. In this manuscript, we discuss the current status of CZTSSe photovoltaics, and provide a comprehensive review of Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) and Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) nanocrystal (NCs)-based fabrication methods and solar cell characteristics. The focus will be on the relevant synthetic chemistry, film deposition, and the production of high efficiency photovoltaic devices. Various colloidal synthesis routes are currently used to form the highest quality CZTSSe film from the nanocrystals with controllable phase, size, shape, composition, and surface ligands. A variety of recipes are summarized for producing nanocrystal inks that are appropriate for forming CZTSSe absorber materials with a wide range of controllable optoelectronic properties. Deposition and post-processing, such as annealing and selenization treatments, play an important role in defining the phase and structure of the resulting material. Various film treatment strategies are outlined here, and their resulting material quality, device performance, and dominant photovoltaic loss mechanisms are discussed. Suggestions regarding needed improvements and future research directions are provided based on the current field of available literature.

Abstract:Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are used as a replacement for indium tin oxide (ITO) in the window layers of CZTSSe solar cells. It demonstrates that this also leads to more efficient carrier collection at the grain boundaries. These advances allow a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.8% without an antireflection coating. This also brings fully printable CZTSSe PV cells a step closer. Photovoltaic thin film solar cells based on kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S, Se)4 (CZTSSe) have reached 13.8% sunlight‐to‐electricity conversion efficiency. However, this efficiency is still far from the Shockley‐Queisser radiative limit and is hindered by the significant deficit in open circuit voltage (VOC). The presence of high‐density interface states between the absorber layer and buffer or window layer leads to the recombination of photogenerated carriers, thereby reducing effective carrier collection. To tackle this issue, a new window structure ZnO/AgNW/ZnO/AgNW (ZAZA) comprising layers of ZnO and silver nanowires (AgNWs) is proposed. This structure offers a simple and low‐damage processing method, resulting in improved optoelectronic properties and junction quality. The ZAZA‐based devices exhibit enhanced VOC due to the higher built‐in voltage (Vbi) and reduced interface recombination compared to the usual indium tin oxide (ITO) based structures. Additionally, improved carrier collection is demonstrated as a result of the shortened collection paths and the more uniform carrier lifetime distribution. These advances enable the fabrication of the first ITO‐free CZTSSe solar cells with over 10% efficiency without an anti‐reflective coating.

Abstract:Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanocrystals with two typical structures, i.e., zinc blende (ZB)-derived and wurtzite (WZ) crystal frameworks, have been selectively synthesized via a solution-based route. Initially, Cu2SnS3 (CTS) nanoparticles with two different phases, i.e., zinc blende- and wurtzite-derived, can be prepared with different S sources and temperatures. Afterward, addition of the Zn precursor to the CTS matrix results in the substitutions of Cu and Sn cations, yielding CZTS with desirable phases. This method can be extended to the synthesis of other similar quaternary chalcogenide nanocrystals. The cation exchange method described here provides a convenient approach for fine-tuning the nanocrystal's cation ratio, which enables us to optimize the solar absorber layer compositions and get a power conversion efficiency of 2.89% in copper-poor and zinc-rich devices. The capability to synthetically access stable phases with controllable morphologies and compositions demonstrates that the developed cation exchange method is powerful as a manufacturing technique for photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanocrystals were synthesized successfully by two hot-injection methods, for which it was found that the temperature for sulfur precursor injection is an important factor to determine the morphology of nanocrystals. Injection carried out at a lower temperature lead to more homogeneous samples. Pure kesterite CZTS with diameter of about 15–20nm was achieved confirmed by comprehensive characterizations including TEM, XRD, Raman, and XPS. Besides, CZTS nanocrystal based thin film, which was fabricated by solution process, exhibited a hole mobility of 4.3×10−2cm2/V-s. The film was then successfully incorporated into a Schottky solar cell, yielding an open circuit voltage of about 300mV. It is notable that this was the first time that the completely nontoxic Schottky solar cell was achieved based on CZTS nanocrystal, which was fabricated completely under room temperature.

Abstract:The Cd‐free Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) solar cell is an ideal candidate for producing low‐cost clean energy through green materials owing to its inherent environmental friendliness and earth abundance. Nevertheless, sulfide CZTS has long suffered from severe open‐circuit voltage (VOC) deficits, limiting the full exploitation of performance potential and further progress. Here, we propose an effective strategy to alleviate the non‐radiative VOC loss by manipulating the phase evolution during the critical kesterite phase formation stage. With a Ge cap layer on the precursor, premature CZTS grain formation is suppressed at low temperatures, leading to fewer nucleation centers at the initial crystallization stage. Consequently, the CZTS grain formation and crystallization are deferred to high temperatures, resulting in enhanced grain interior quality and less unfavorable grain boundaries in the final film. As a result, a champion efficiency of 10.7% for Cd‐free CZTS solar cells with remarkably high VOC beyond 800 mV (63.2% Schockley‐Queisser limit) is realized, indicating that non‐radiative recombination is effectively inhibited. Abstract:The fabrication of environmental-friendly Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin films with pure kesterite phase is always a challenge to researchers in the field of solar cells. We introduce a simple non-vacuum sol-gel method to fabricate kesterite CZTS films. Ethylenediamine is used as the chelating agent and stabilizer and plays an important role in preparing stable precursor. X-ray diffraction, Raman and scanning electron microscopy studies suggest that the microstructure and optical properties of CZTS films depend strongly on annealing temperatures. The temperature dependence of conductivity of 500 °C annealed CZTS film shows that the Mott law dominates in the low temperature region and thermionic emission is predominant at high temperatures.

Abstract:A new and low-cost chemical method is used to fabricate Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) thin films by annealing Cu–Sn metallic inks with spin-coating ZnO layers under H2S. The obtained pure phase and smooth CZTS thin films are characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Further, the CZTS thin films are grown on n-type Si substrates to form proto-type CZTS/Si heterojunction solar cells that have photovoltaic properties, indicating the promising application of CZTS as the absorber layers in Si-based heterojunction solar cells.
[Effect of tea on oral cancer in nonsmokers and nondrinkers: a case-control study].

Abstract:UNLABELLED OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of tea on oral cancer in nonsmokers and nondrinkers. METHODS A case-control study were performed between September 2010 and January 2015 including 203 oral cancer cases in nonsmokers and nondrinkers with pathologically confirmed and 572 community controls. The related information included socio-demographic characteristics, detailed information on tobacco smoking and alcohol and tea consumption, personal medical history, family history of cancer, and occupational history were collected from all subjects. Unconditional logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) to examine the effect of tea on oral cancer and to assess multiplicative interactions between tea and passive smoking. We also stratified by age, sex, residence, and passive smoking to explore possible difference in association between subgroups. Additive interactions between tea and passive smoking were assessed using relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion (AP), and synergy index (SI). RESULTS Compared with non-tea drinkers, tea consumption (OR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.34-0.81), age of tea drinking initiation (years) ≥ 18 (OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.34-0.85), duration of tea consumption (years) < 20 (OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.27-0.90), duration of tea consumption (years) ≥ 20 (OR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.32-0.95), average daily tea consumed < 700 ml (OR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.32-0.86), moderate concentration of tea consumed (OR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.32-0.96), weak concentration of tea consumed (OR = 0.35, 95% CI: 0.16-0.77), drinking green-tea (OR = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.28-0.82) and drinking moderate temperature of tea (OR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.31-0.98) could reduce the risk of oral cancer; Stratified analysis indicated the protective effects of tea drinking on female (OR = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.30-0.94), age < 60 years old (OR = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.29-0.97), live in the urban (OR = 0.38, 95% CI: 0.20-0.69) and no passive smoking (OR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.25-0.86) population with nonsmoking and nondrinking was more obvious; Crossover analysis showed tea and passive smoking did not exist multiplication interaction relationship (OR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.41-2.20) and addition interaction relationship (RERI = -0.15, 95% CI: -0.92-0.62;AP = -0.16, 95% CI: -1.06-0.73; SI = -0.18, 95% CI: -1.44-0.87). CONCLUSION Tea consumption, age of tea drinking initiation, duration of tea consumption, average daily tea consumed, concentration of tea consumed, types of tea and temperature of tea might have impact on the incidence of oral cancer in nonsmokers and nondrinkers to a certain extent.
Ecodesign of Kesterite Nanoparticles for Thin Film Photovoltaics at Laboratory Scale

Abstract:This manuscript investigates the efficient synthesis of copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS) nanoparticles for CZTS thin film solar cell applications with a primary focus on environmental sustainability. Underpinning the investigation is an initial life-cycle assessment (LCA) analysis. This LCA analysis is conducted to evaluate the environmental impact of different synthesis volumes, providing crucial insights into the sustainability of the synthesis process by considering the flows of material and energy associated with the process. Life-cycle assessment results demonstrate that significant reductions to the environmental impact can be made by increasing the synthesis volume of CZTS nanoparticle ink. Using a 5-fold increase in volume can reduce all 11 investigated environmental impacts by up to 35.6%, six of these impacts demonstrating reductions >10% and the amount of global warming potential is reduced by 21.4%. Motivated by the LCA results, COMSOL simulations are employed to understand the fluid flow patterns in large-scale fabrication. Various sizes and speeds of stirrer bars are investigated in these simulations, and it is determined that a 50 mm stir bar at 200 rpm represents the optimal configuration for the synthesis process in a 500 mL flask. Subsequently, large-batch CZTS nanoparticle inks are synthesized using these parameters and compared to small-batch samples. The light absorbers are characterized using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, confirming favorable properties with close-to-ideal elemental ratios in large-batch synthesis. Finally, solar cell devices fabricated utilizing CZTSSe absorbers from the large volume synthesis process demonstrate comparable performance to those fabricated using small-batch synthesis, with uniform power conversion efficiencies of around 5% across the substrate. This study highlights the potential of large-volume CZTS nanoparticle synthesis for efficient and environmentally friendly CZTS solar cell fabrication, contributing to the advancement of sustainable renewable energy technologies.
Synthesis and characterization of CZTS and Cu2-xAgxZnSnS4 thin films for the application of solar cells

Abstract:We report on colloidal Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) and Cu2-xAgxZnSnS4 (X=0.25) nanoparticles synthesis by sol-gel spin coating process and hot injection method. The colloidal nanoparticles were deposited on ITO substrates by using spin-coating techniques. The deposited thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectrometer, FE-SEM, Raman spectroscopy and Keithley 2450 Source meter. XRD reveals that the crystal structure of CZTS is confirmed tetragonal structure with peak (112) and observed the changes to wurtzite peak (002) due to the presence of Ag. UV visible spectra show that the optical band gap of CZTS nanoparticles decreases from 2 eV to around 1.75 eV, and there is a significant improvement in absorption coefficient when the sample is prepared under a nitrogen atmosphere. FESEM captured the microstructure image of CZTS and Cu2-xAgxZnSnS4. Photoluminescence (PL) reveals the emission peaks and Raman spectra investigate the secondary phases present. XPS confirms the presence of each element and their oxidation state. Further, electrical properties are studied using the four-probe method at room temperature. CZTS offers optical and electrical properties, which allow it to be suitable for thin-film solar cell absorber layers, and Ag doping enhances its properties.

Abstract:We introduce a hydrothermal method for synthesizing ultrafine earth abundant Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanocrystals with an average size of 5–6nm using simple Cu(II), Zn(II), Sn(II) inorganic salt and thiourea as precursor. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectrum and transmission electron microscopy studies indicate that CZTS nanocrystals with pure kesterite structure have been synthesized at temperature as low as 180°C. The band-gap energy determined from the absorbance spectrum is 1.47eV, suggesting that as-synthesized CZTS nanocrystals are very suitable for photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:The orthorhombic polymorph of Cu2ZnGeS4 (CZGS) is a metastable wurtzite-derived phase that can only be prepared in the bulk form by extensive heating at high temperatures (≥790 °C) when using the conventional solid-state reaction route. By employing a facile solution-based synthetic strategy, we were able to obtain phase-pure orthorhombic CZGS in nanocrystalline form at a much lower reaction temperature. Prior to this work, the colloidal synthesis of single-phase orthorhombic CZGS on the nanoscale has never been reported. We find that the use of an appropriate combination of coordinating solvents and precursors is crucial to the sole formation of this metastable phase in solution. A possible formation mechanism is proposed on the basis of our experimental results. Because CZGS consists of environmentally benign metal components, it is regarded as a promising alternative material to the technologically useful yet toxic cadmium-containing semiconductors. The orthorhombic CZGS nanocrystals display strong photon absorption in the visible spectrum and are photocatalytically active in dye degradation under visible-light illumination.

Yet, environmental concerns and element scarcity fuel the pursuit of alternatives. Copper zinc tin sulfide (Cu(Zn,Sn)(S,Se)2 or CZTS) garners attention for its use of non-toxic, abundant elements. We present a study on CZTS thin film solar cells via low-temperature chemical synthesis. The process involves dissolving Copper (II) acetate, zinc (II) acetate, and tin (II) chloride in 2-methoxyethanol and monoethanolamine to create a metal compound solution. This solution is spin-coated onto molybdenum-coated glass substrates and annealed at 300 °C. The CZTS layer is sulfurized at 400 °C using di-tert-butyl-disulfide (TBDS). Characterization utilized diverse techniques. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed smoother surfaces post-sulfurization. Optimized compositions, Cu-poor and Zn-rich, vital for enhanced efficiency, were confirmed through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns aligned well with the kesterite phase, with additional phases like ZnS, SnS, SnS2, and CuS detected. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) offered insights into composition and surface contamination. High-resolution scans provided binding energies, validating the film's composition. This study enhances the comprehension and realization of CZTS thin film solar cells, offering a potential avenue for earth-abundant, efficient photovoltaics.

Abstract:Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) has attracted intensive interest for application in photovoltaic technology due to its excellent semiconductor properties. We report a nanostructured CZTS solar cell which was fabricated by infiltrating of CZTS nanoparticles into CdS coated ZnO nanorod arrays. The well aligned ZnO nanorods facilitate the efficient infiltration of CZTS nanoparticles. A hole transport layer was deposited to facilitate the transport of holes. The nanostructured CZTS solar cell demonstrated a remarkably high short-circuit current density (11.0 mA/cm(2)). Its high absorption coefficient, optimal band gap, and non-toxic, naturally abundant elemental constituents give it a number of advantages over most thin film absorber materials. In this manuscript, we discuss the current status of CZTSSe photovoltaics, and provide a comprehensive review of Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) and Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) nanocrystal (NCs)-based fabrication methods and solar cell characteristics. The focus will be on the relevant synthetic chemistry, film deposition, and the production of high efficiency photovoltaic devices. Various colloidal synthesis routes are currently used to form the highest quality CZTSSe film from the nanocrystals with controllable phase, size, shape, composition, and surface ligands. A variety of recipes are summarized for producing nanocrystal inks that are appropriate for forming CZTSSe absorber materials with a wide range of controllable optoelectronic properties. Deposition and post-processing, such as annealing and selenization treatments, play an important role in defining the phase and structure of the resulting material. Various film treatment strategies are outlined here, and their resulting material quality, device performance, and dominant photovoltaic loss mechanisms are discussed. Suggestions regarding needed improvements and future research directions are provided based on the current field of available literature.

Abstract:The present study reports the synthesis of colloidal Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) nanocrystals (average size ~4–9 nm) by a simple and low cost hot-injection method. These nanocrystals form larger particles with sizes around 40 nm. Oleylamine (OLA) was used as both the solvent and the nanocrystal stabilizer. The effect of the synthesis time on the structural, compositional, morphological, and optical properties was studied. As revealed by XRD, Raman, and TEM measurements all the prepared samples are comprised of both kesterite and wurtzite CZTS nanocrystals. The wurtzite phase contribution reduces as the reaction time is increased. The “bandgap” of the obtained nanoparticles tends to 1.52 eV for the larger synthesis times (24 h) which is suitable for an absorber layer in thin films solar cells.

Abstract:Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) is one of the most promising quaternary absorber materials for thin-film solar cells. Light to electricity conversion efficiencies in CZTS devices have recently reached 9.6%, making it a competitive and more sustainable replacement for existing CdTe and Cu(In, Ga)Se-2 (CIGS) thin-film technologies. We review our recent insights into the structural, electronic and defect properties of this topical material. We have found that the stable crystal structure of CZTS is kesterite, which is derived from the ternary chalcopyrite structure. Examination of the thermodynamic stability of CZTS reveals that the stable chemical potential region for the formation of the stoichiometric compound is small. Under these conditions, the dominant defect will be p-type CuZ(n) antisite, which has an acceptor level deeper than the isolated Cu vacancy. The dominant self-compensated defect pair is [Cu-Zn+Zn-Cu], which leads to the formation of various polytype structures. We propose that to maximize the solar cell performance, growth of CZTS under Cu-poor/Zn-rich conditions will be optimal, if the precipitation of ZnS can be avoided. This theoretical guidance can provide new directions for improving the conversion efficiencies of kesterite based solar cells.

Abstract:CZTSSe is composed of earth abundant, relatively inexpensive and non-toxic metal with an intermediate chalcogenide structure. Direct bandgap metal chalcogenide thin film has the potential to reduce production costs for both raw materials and processing requirements. CZTSSe has received greater attention in the field of solar cells due to its tunable bandgap for different S to Se ratio varying for pure selenide ( E g = 1.1) and pure sulfide ( E g = 1.45). The current study describes the synthesis of CZTSSe nanocrystals using a simple and cost-effective solvothermal method. This method not only reduces cost but also prevents the usage of toxic solvents and avoids the selenization route. Aniline has been used as both solvent and stabilizing agent for the formation of nanocrystals. The obtained nanocrystals were studied for their structural, morphological and optical properties using XRD, HRTEM, UV-Vis spectroscopy and XPS. The XRD and HRTEM patterns of the synthesized nanocrystals confirms the kesterite structure of CZTSSe. The UV-Vis spectra of the nanocrystal confirms the direct bandgap of about 1.187 eV. This band gap energy is very near to the ideal value for an absorber in a photovoltaic solar cell.
