Abstract:Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering demonstrates that two parties share entanglement even if the measurement devices of one party are untrusted. Here, going beyond this bipartite concept, we develop a novel formalism to explore a large class of EPR steering from generic multipartite quantum systems of arbitrarily high dimensionality and degrees of freedom, such as graph states and hyperentangled systems. All of these quantum characteristics of genuine high-order EPR steering can be efficiently certified with few measurement settings in experiments. We faithfully demonstrate for the first time such generality by experimentally showing genuine four-partite EPR steering and applications to universal one-way quantum computing. Our formalism provides a new insight into the intermediate type of genuine multipartite Bell nonlocality and potential applications to quantum information tasks and experiments in the presence of untrusted measurement devices.

Abstract:Nonlocality and quantum measurement are two fundamental topics in quantum theory and their interplay attracts intensive focuses since the discovery of Bell theorem. Recently, nonlocality sharing among multiple observers with one entangled pair has been predicted and experimentally observed by generalized quantum measurement-weak measurement. However, only the one-sided sequential case, i.e., one Alice and multiple Bobs, is widely discussed and little is known about the two-sided case. Here, we theoretically and experimentally explore the nonlocality sharing in the two-sided sequential measurements case in which one entangled pair is distributed to multiple Alices and Bobs. We experimentally observed double Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering among four observers in a photonic system. In the case that all observers adopt the same measurement strength of the weak measurement, it is observed that double EPR steering can be demonstrated simultaneously. The results not only deepen our understanding of relation between sequential measurements and nonlocality but also may find important applications in many quantum information tasks, such as randomness certification.

Abstract:The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox established a link between entanglement and nonlocality in quantum mechanics. EPR steering is the nonlocality associated with the EPR paradox and has traditionally only been investigated between two parties. Here, we present the first experimental observations of multipartite EPR steering, and of the genuine tripartite continuous variable entanglement of three mesoscopic optical systems. We explore different linear optics networks - each one with optimised asymmetries - that create multipartite steerable states containing different numbers of quantised optical modes (qumodes). By introducing asymmetric loss on a 7-qumode state, we characterize 8 regimes of directional steering, showing that N + 1 regimes exist for an N-qumode state. Further, we reveal the directional monogamy of steering, and experimentally demonstrate continuous variable one-sided semi device-independent quantum secret sharing. Our methods establish principles for the development of multiparty quantum communication protocols with asymmetric observers, and can be extended to qubits, whether photonic, atomic, superconducting, or otherwise.

Abstract:Uncertainty principle lies at the heart of quantum mechanics, while nonlocality is an intriguing phenomenon of quantum mechanics to rule out local causal theories. One subtle form of nonlocality is so-called Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering, which holds the potential for shared entanglement verification even if the one-sided measurement device is untrusted. However, certifying EPR steering remains a big challenge presently. Here, we employ the local uncertainty relation to provide an experimental friendly approach for EPR steering verification. We show that the strength of EPR steering is quantitatively linked to the strength of the uncertainty relation, as well as the amount of entanglement. We find also that the realignment method works for detecting EPR steering of an arbitrary dimensional system.

Abstract:Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering describes the ability of one observer to nonlocally "steer" the other observer's state through local measurements. EPR steering exhibits a unique asymmetric property; i.e., the steerability can differ between observers, which can lead to one-way EPR steering in which only one observer obtains steerability in the steering process. This property is inherently different from the symmetric concepts of entanglement and Bell nonlocality, and it has attracted increasing interest. Here, we experimentally demonstrate asymmetric EPR steering for a class of two-qubit states in the case of two measurement settings. We propose a practical method to quantify the steerability. We then provide a necessary and sufficient condition for EPR steering and clearly demonstrate one-way EPR steering. Our work provides new insight into the fundamental asymmetry of quantum nonlocality and has potential applications in asymmetric quantum information processing.

Abstract:In comparison with entanglement and Bell nonlocality, Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering is a newly emerged research topic and in its incipient stage. Although Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering has been explored via violations of steering inequalities both theoretically and experimentally, the known inequalities in the literatures are far from well-developed. As a result, it is not yet possible to observe Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering for some steerable mixed states. Recently, a simple approach was presented to identify Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering based on all-versus-nothing argument, offering a strong condition to witness the steerability of a family of two-qubit (pure or mixed) entangled states. In this work, we show that the all-versus-nothing proof of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering can be tested by measuring the projective probabilities. Through the bound of probabilities imposed by local-hidden-state model, the proposed test shows that steering can be detected by the all-versus-nothing argument experimentally even in the presence of imprecision and errors. Our test can be implemented in many physical systems and we discuss the possible realizations of our scheme with non-Abelian anyons and trapped ions.

Abstract:Questions regarding public acceptance of BMPs as well as public perception of the urban environment and of flood risk are addressed in this paper on the base of survey outcomes of a research project carried out in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais State, in Brazil. Public perception of these aspects was assessed employing structured questionnaires. Surveys were carried out in two urban catchments where detention basins are employed mainly for flood control purposes: the Santa Lucia and the Vilarinho detention basins. The two areas show significant differences in socio-economic terms as well as in the type of storage structure, allowing a rich discussion about people acceptance of this kind of stormwater alternative in the urban context.

Abstract:Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering, a category of quantum nonlocal correlations describing the ability of one observer to influence another party's state via local measurements, is different from both entanglement and Bell nonlocality by possessing an asymmetric property. For multipartite EPR steering, the monogamous situation, where two observers cannot simultaneously steer the state of the third party, has been investigated rigorously both in theory and experiment. In contrast to the monogamous situation, the shareability of EPR steering in reduced subsystems allows the state of one party to be steered by two or more observers and thus reveals more configurations of multipartite EPR steering. However, the experimental implementation of such a kind of shareability has still been absent until now. Here, in an optical experiment, we provide a proof-of-principle demonstration of the shareability of EPR steering without the constraint of monogamy in a three-qubit system. Moreover, based on the reduced bipartite EPR steering detection results, we verify the genuine three-qubit entanglement results. This work provides a complementary viewpoint for understanding multipartite EPR steering and has potential applications in many quantum information protocols, such as multipartite entanglement detection, quantum cryptography, and the construction of quantum networks.

Abstract:The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is an intermediate quantum nonlocality between entanglement and Bell nonlocality, which plays an important role in quantum information processing tasks. In the past few years, the investigations concerning EPR steering have been demonstrated in a series of experiments. However, these studies rely on the relevant steering inequalities and the choices of measurement settings. Here, we experimentally verify the EPR steering via entanglement detection without using any steering inequality and measurement setting. By constructing two new states from a two-qubit target state, we observe the EPR steering by detecting the entanglement of these new states. The results show that the entanglement of the newly constructed states can be regarded as a new kind of steering witness for target states. Compared to the results of Xiao et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 140404 (2017)], we find that the ability of detecting EPR steering in our scenario is stronger than two-setting projective measurements, which can observe more steerable states. Hence, our demonstrations can deepen the understanding of the connection between the EPR steering and entanglement.

Abstract:Non-Gaussian quantum states are a known necessary resource for reaching a quantum advantage and for violating Bell inequalities in continuous variable systems. As one kind of manifestation of quantum correlations, Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering enables verification of shared entanglement even when one of the subsystems is not characterized. However, how to detect and classify such an effect for non-Gaussian states is far from being well understood. Here, we present an efficient non-Gaussian steering criterion based on the high-order observables and conduct a systematic investigation into the hierarchy of non-Gaussian steering criteria. Moreover, we apply our criterion to three experimentally-relevant non-Gaussian states under realistic conditions and, in particular, propose a feasible scheme to create multi-component cat states with tunable size by performing a suitable high-order quadrature measurement on the steering party. Our work reveals the fundamental characteristics of non-Gaussianity and quantum correlations, and offers new insights to explore their applications in quantum information processing.

Abstract:Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is an intermediate type of quantum nonlocality which sits between entanglement and Bell nonlocality. A set of correlations is Bell nonlocal if it does not admit a local hidden variable (LHV) model, while it is EPR nonlocal if it does not admit a local hidden variable-local hidden state (LHV-LHS) model. It is interesting to know what states can generate EPR-nonlocal correlations in the simplest nontrivial scenario, that is, two projective measurements for each party sharing a two-qubit state. Here we show that a two-qubit state can generate EPR-nonlocal full correlations (excluding marginal statistics) in this scenario if and only if it can generate Bell-nonlocal correlations. If full statistics (including marginal statistics) is taken into account, surprisingly, the same scenario can manifest the simplest one-way steering and the strongest hierarchy between steering and Bell nonlocality. To illustrate these intriguing phenomena in simple setups, several concrete examples are discussed in detail, which facilitates experimental demonstration. In the course of study, we introduce the concept of restricted LHS models and thereby derive a necessary and sufficient semidefinite-programming criterion to determine the steerability of any bipartite state under given measurements. Analytical criteria are further derived in several scenarios of strong theoretical and experimental interest.

Abstract:Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is a quantum nonlocality between entanglement and Bell’s nonlocality emphasizing the incompatibility of the local-hidden-state (LHS) model with quantum theory. It is well established that the EPR steering paradox is an essential method for determining steering, which reveals the nature of steering by logical contradiction. However, previous studies on the EPR steering paradox have only examined cases where the conditional states of the steered party are pure. In this work, we present the EPR steering paradox about the case when the conditional states of the steered party are mixed, which can be expressed as a paradoxical equality “2Q = (2 - δ)C” (0 < δ < 1) given by quantum (Q) and classical (C) theories. For any N-qubit state, in the two-setting steering protocol, the contradiction “2Q = (2 - δ)C” can be obtained if and only if a particular set of projective measurements of the steering party makes all the conditional states of the steered party pure, which also implies that the N-qubit state is steerable. Moreover, considering the conditional states of the steered party as mixed states, we are able to identify the full range of steerable states detectable through the EPR steering paradox method. This also means that, so far, one has found all the steerable states that can be recognized by the EPR steering paradox, which is signiﬁcant for some typical quantum schemes such as quantum teleportation and quantum key distribution.

Abstract:Quantum paradoxes are essential means to reveal the incompatibility between quantum and classical theories, among which the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering paradox offers a sharper criterion for the contradiction between local-hidden-state model and quantum mechanics than the usual inequality-based method. In this work, we present a generalized EPR steering paradox, which predicts a contradictory equality " " ( ) given by the quantum ( ) and classical ( ) theories. For any -qubit state in which the conditional state of the steered party is pure, we test the paradox through a two-setting steering protocol, and find that the state is steerable if some specific measurement requirements are satisfied. Moreover, our construction also enlightens the building of EPR steering inequality, which may contribute to some schemes for typical quantum teleportation and quantum key distributions.

Abstract:The striking and distinctive nonlocal features of quantum mechanics were discovered by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (EPR) beyond classical physics. At the core of the EPR argument, it was "steering" that Schrodinger proposed in 1935. Besides its fundamental significance, quantum steering opens up a novel application for quantum communication. Recent work has precisely characterized its properties; however, witnessing the EPR nonlocality remains a big challenge under arbitrary local measurements. Here we present an alternative linear criterion and complement existing results to efficiently testify steering for high-dimensional system in practice. By developing a novel and analytical method to tackle the maximization problem in deriving the bound of a steering criterion, we show how observed correlations can reveal powerfully the EPR nonlocality in an easily accessed manner. Although the criteria is not necessary and sufficient, it can recover some of the known results under a few settings of local measurements and is applicable even if the size of the system or the number of measurement settings are high. Remarkably, a deep connection is explicitly established between the steering and amount of entanglement. The results promise viable paths for secure communication with an untrusted source, providing optional loophole-free tests of the EPR nonlocality for high-dimensional states, as well as motivating solutions for other related problems in quantum information theory.

Abstract:We investigate whether paradigmatic measurements for quantum state tomography, namely mutually unbiased bases and symmetric informationally complete measurements, can be employed to certify quantum correlations. For this purpose, we identify a simple and noise-robust correlation witness for entanglement detection, steering, and nonlocality that can be evaluated based on the outcome statistics obtained in the tomography experiment. This allows us to perform state tomography on entangled qutrits, a test of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering and a Bell inequality test, all within a single experiment. We also investigate the trade-off between quantum correlations and subsets of tomographically complete measurements as well as the quantification of entanglement in the different scenarios. Finally, we perform a photonics experiment in which we demonstrate quantum correlations under these flexible assumptions, namely with both parties trusted, one party untrusted and both parties untrusted.

Abstract:Quantum steering is a recently-defined form of quantum correlation which lies at the heart of quantum mechanics. In difference from other types of quantum correlations, quantum steering is inherently asymmetric, which implies that it could manifest in one direction but not in the opposite direction. This rather peculiar phenomenon, known as one-way steering, have been demonstrated in several experiments, but subtlety remains. In fact all experiments were shown to be ambiguous until a very recent conclusive one, which however made a crucial use of a high dimensional embedding to get around assumptions. This leaves the question open whether the one-way steering phenomenon can be reliably demonstrated in the genuine two-qubit system. Here, we report such an experimental demonstration of one-way steering for a family of two-qubit states. Our experimental setup and results thus resolve the subtlety caused by fidelity assumption in previous experiments without the need of higher dimensional embedding. Moreover, our work provides a universal method to characterize one-way steering phenomenon for generic two-qubit states.
