Abstract:Congenital heart disease (CHD) refers to a group of anomalies characterized by structural and functional abnormalities in the heart and large blood vessels that occur during embryonic development. Notably, CHD is the most common congenital anomaly in newborn babies, affecting approximately 1% of neonates, and severe CHD, if left untreated, results in death within a short period after birth. [ 1 , 2 ] The prevalence of common types of CHD is as follows: ventricular septal defect (VSD; 35.6%), atrial septal defect (ASD; 15.4%), patent ductus arteriosus (10.2%), pulmonary valve stenosis (6.2%), and tetralogy of Fallot (TOF; 4.4%). [ 3 ] The etiology of CHD is multifactorial, with environmental, genetic, and epigenetic factors playing a crucial role. Genetic factors are considered the primary contributors to CHD, with approximately 40% of cases attributed to known genetic risk factors, including chromosomal aneuploidies, copy number variation (CNV), and pathogenic mutations in specific genes.
