Abstract:Formic acid (FA) holds significant potential as a liquid hydrogen storage medium. However, it is important to improve the reaction rates and extend the practical applications of FA dehydrogenation and Cr(VI) reduction through the development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts. This study reports the synthesis of a uniformly dispersed PdAuIr nanoparticles (NPs) catalyst loaded with amine groups covalent organic frameworks (COFs). The alloyed NPs demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in FA dehydrogenation rate and Cr(VI) reduction. The initial turnover of frequency (TOF) value for FA dehydrogenation without additives was 9970 h −1 at 298 K, the apparent activation energy ( E a ) was 30.3 kJ/mol and the rate constant ( k ) for Cr(VI) reduction was 0.742 min −1 . Additionally, it showcased the ability to undergo recycling up to six times with minimal degradation in performance. The results indicate that its remarkable catalytic performance can be attributed primarily to the favorable mass transfer attributes of the aminated COFs supports, the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI), and the synergistic effects among the metals. This study offers a novel perspective on the advancement of efficient and durable heterogeneous catalysts with diverse capabilities, thereby making significant contributions to the fields of energy and environmental preservation.

Abstract:During the SPS high intensity run 2002 with LHC type beam, the breaking of several of the carbon wires in the wire scanners has been observed in their parking position. The observation of large changes in the wire resistivity and thermionic electron emission clearly indicated strong RF heating that was depending on the bunch length. A subsequent analysis in the laboratory, simulating the beam by two probe antennas or by a powered stretched wire, showed two main problems: i) the housing of the wire scanner acts as a cavity with a mode spectrum starting around 350 MHz and high impedance values around 700 MHz; ii) the carbon wire used so far appears to be an excellent RF absorber and thus dissipates a significant part of the beam-induced power. Different wire materials are compared with the classical cavity mode technique for the determination of the complex permittivity in the range of 2-4 GHz. As a resonator a rectangular TE/sub 01n/ type device is utilized.

Abstract:The role of mass transport for bubble generation reaction as formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation has been over-looked for a long time that the turnover frequency (TOF) values of the majority of the catalysts are limited to less than 1000 h(-1). Here, we proposed a design principle of efficient catalyst for this type of reaction that the synergism of highly active catalytic components and developed porous structure of the support required for effective mass transport is indispensable. Based on this cognition, well-dispersed and ultrasmall PdAu alloy nanoparticles (similar to 2 nm) supported in amine-functionalized hierarchically porous carbon (HPC-NH2) have been prepared via an impregnation-reduction method. Notably, owing to the electronic effect of the PdAu alloy clusters and the introduced basic amine sites, as well as the hierarchically porous structure of the support, the optimal Pd60Au40/HPC-NH2 catalyst exhibits a TOF value up to 3763 h(-1) at room temperature and 29,210 h-(1) at 323 K.
Preparation of Highly Active Silica-Supported Au Catalysts for Co Oxidation by A Solution-Based Technique

Abstract:Although Au catalysts can be readily prepared on titania via the deposition-precipitation (DP) method, the direct application of the method similar to the preparation of silica-supported Au catalysts only results in diminished success. This paper reports a novel, efficient method to synthesize highly active Au catalysts supported on mesoporous silica (SBA-15) through a gold cationic complex precursor [Au(en)(2)](3+) (en = ethylenediamine) via a wet chemical process. The gold cationic precursor was immobilized on negatively charged surfaces of silica by a unique DP method that makes use of the deprotonation reaction of ethylenediamine ligands. The resulting mesoporous catalyst has been demonstrated to be highly active for CO oxidation at room temperature and even below 273 K, the activity of which is much superior to that of silica-supported Au catalysts previously prepared by various solution techniques. The pH value of the gold precursor solution plays a key role in determining the catalytic activity through the regulation of [Au(en)(2)](3+) deprotonation reaction and the surface interaction of silica with the gold precursor. This mesoporous gold silica catalyst has also been shown to be highly resistant to sintering because of the stabilization of Au nanoparticles inside mesopores.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA) is a prospective hydrogen storage agent, which has attracted much attention for its low toxicity and stability and plays a significant role in the comprehensive implementation of the hydrogen economy. In this regard, it is very important to utilize additive free FA dehydrogenation , for which few heterogeneous catalysts are available. Herein, we report ultra-small PdAuIr nanoparticles (NPs) supported on amine-based amorphous porous organic polymers (POPs), which exhibit excellent FA dehydrogenation activity with an initial total turnover number (TOF) of 9635 h −1 without additives at room temperature and apparent activation energy ( Ea app ) of 36.5 kJ/mol. The results show that the excellent performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of trimetallic alloys and strong metal-support interaction effect (SMSI), as well as to the amine groups (-NH 2 ) grafted on POPs which facilitates the O–H bond splitting on FA. Overall, the simple and efficient synthetic strategy provides a new method for the selective dehydrogenation of FA.

Abstract:Ultrafine and well-dispersed PdAu bimetallic nanoparticles (ca. 1.4 nm) are successfully immobilized on amine-containing UiO-66 frameworks (NH2-UiO-66) via a double-solvent impregnation method. By virtue of the double-solvent strategy, the incorporated PdAu nanoparticles (NPs) are mainly present in the alloy state and distributed inside the cavities of NH2-UiO-66 near the window of the cages. The resulting PdAu/UiO-66 catalysts exhibit much higher catalytic activity and stability for the dehydrogenation of formic acid than the catalyst prepared by the conventional single-solvent impregnation method. The composition-optimized Pd0.8Au0.2/UiO-66-D catalyst affords a very high turnover frequency value of 722 h–1 at 298 K, which is among the highest one in the metal–organic framework-supported Pd-based NP catalysts ever reported under similar reaction conditions. Abstract:Bimetallic AgPd nanoparticles were successfully immobilized on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) functionalized SBA-15 for the first time by a facile co-reduction method. These catalysts were applied in the decomposition of formic acid. The dehydrogenation of formic acid is dependent on the composition of AgPd and the content of carbon nitride (CN). Among all of the AgPd/mCND/SBA-15 catalysts tested, the Ag10Pd90/0.2CND/SBA-15 catalyst exhibits highly superior performance for the decomposition of formic acid into high-quality hydrogen at 323 K with 100% hydrogen selectivity and a turnover frequency of 893 h(-1), which is among the maximum values obtained at 323 K in this paper. The improved performance is a promising step towards the utilization of formic acid as a hydrogen storage material.

Abstract:The demand for harmless and efficient energy sources is remarkably expanding, particularly after the increased awareness of global warming, greenhouse gas emissions, immense fossil fuel consumption, and so forth. Formic acid is considered a potential candidate as an energy carrier for reversible hydrogen storage owing to its decomposition to hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in the presence of suitable catalysts. However, selective and efficient decomposition of formic acid using classical heterogeneous catalysis is still challenging because most heterogeneous catalysts which are known are ill defined. Herein, we report a promising heterogeneous approach toward formic acid dehydrogenation using a ruthenium PN3P pincer complex, [Ru–H(CO) ( tBuPN3P)] (I), immobilized on a fibrous silica nanosphere, KCC-1, with a strong Lewis acid character [(Si–O–Si) (Si–O−)2Al–H]. The resulting heterogeneous catalyst, [Ru(H) (CO) (tBuPN3P)]@[(Si–O–Si) (Si–O−)2Al–H] (III), has been fully characterized by advanced solid-state characterization techniques. In this compound, Al is tetrahedrally coordinated. It is a single-site catalyst which exhibits good stability toward water, high pressures, and high temperatures as well as good activity in formic acid dehydrogenation. An excellent turnover number of 600,000 and a recyclability of up to 45 cycles are observed.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA), one of the products of biomass conversion and CO2 reduction, has attracted much attention as a renewable liquid hydrogen carrier with a high hydrogen content (4.4 wt%). Searching for efficient catalysts to realize hydrogen evolution from FA are highly desired but challenging. Herein, ultrafine and mono-dispersed Pd-Cr(OH)3 nanoparticles (1.3 nm) loaded on amine-functionalized mesoporous silica (AFMS) have been prepared and applied as an effective catalyst for rapid hydrogen production from additive-free FA. The as-synthesized Pd-Cr(OH)3/AFMS catalysts exhibited efficient catalytic activity and 100% hydrogen selectivity and conversion toward FA dehydrogenation reaction without additives, giving an initial TOF value of 3112 h-1 at 323 K, which is comparable to most of the highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts reported so far under similar reaction conditions. This work provides a feasible idea for the design metal hydroxide-modified Pd-based efficient heterogeneous catalyst, which is expected to enhance the application of FA in fuel cells.

Abstract:The three kinds of amine-modified silica supported ruthenium complexes developed for the first time are effective catalysts for the synthesis of formic acid from supercritical carbon dioxide and hydrogen, the activity is comparable to that of homogeneous catalysts, TOF up to 1190 h −1 can be obtained at 100% selectivity of formic acid over “Si”—NH 2 —RuCl 3 with bis(1,2-diphenylphosphino)ethane used as ligand. These catalysts also offer the practical advantages such as easy separation and reuse.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA) has been considered as a promising hydrogen energy carrier due to its nontoxicity, high energy density, easy storage/transport, etc. However, the development of decent FA dehydrogenation catalysts with high selectivity, good catalytic activity, and excellent cycling performance remains a challenge. Herein, a highly stable heterogeneous catalyst using porous boron nitride nanofibers (BNNFs) as carriers has been developed for catalytic FA dehydrogenation. Taking the advantage of porous BNNFs with characteristics of high porosity and rich in surface defects and functional groups, amine groups are successfully introduced onto BNNFs (named BNNFs-A), which play an important role in synergistic catalysis reactions. Without using any additives, the prepared Au1Pd3/BNNFs-A catalytic FA dehydrogenation possesses superior catalytic activity with an initial turnover frequency (TOF) value of 1181.1 h–1 and an activation energy of 20.1 kJ mol–1. Comparative investigations and theoretical studies indicate that the excellent performance of Au1Pd3/BNNFs-A derives from the small particle sizes and high dispersion of Au1Pd3 nanoparticles on BNNFs, the modified Pd electronic structure in the Au1Pd3/BNNFs-A composite, and the synergistic effect of the modified BN surfaces. Abstract:The rational design of heterogeneous catalysts with remarkable activity and low cost is essential yet challenging for formic acid (HCOOH, FA) dehydrogenation. Herein, ultrafine bimetallic PdCo nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed on the amine-functionalized CeZrSBA-15 (CeZrSBA-15-NH 2 ) with short channels have been successfully prepared. The optimized catalyst Pd 3 Co 2 /CeZrSBA-15-NH 2 (the Pd/Co molar ratio is 3:2) displayed the extraordinary catalytic performance of FA dehydrogenation with 100 % FA conversion and H 2 selectivity. Furthermore, in the presence of sodium formate (SF) as an additive, the catalytic system achieved an impressive initial turnover frequency (TOF) of 2001 h −1 at a temperature of 323 K, which is better than the TM (transition metal)-containing Pd-based heterogeneous systems ever published under the similar reaction conditions. The exceptional catalytic activity is ascribed to several key factors, including the presence of short channels that facilitate the efficient transfer of reactants, the ultrafine size (1.6 nm) and uniform dispersion of PdCo nanoparticles, which serve as the active catalytic sites on the CeZrSBA-15-NH 2 support. Additionally, the regulated electronic effects induced by Pd and Co, coupled with the metal-support interaction (MSI) effect, further enhance the catalytic performance. This work affords a new paradigm into developing effective mesoporous silica-based heterogeneous catalysts for H 2 production from FA dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA) has been well recognized as one of the most promising hydrogen carriers. The dehydrogenation of the FA could offer an efficient process to on-demand hydrogen generation with a suitable catalyst. Homogeneous catalysts have demonstrated superior activity and selectivity compared to traditional heterogeneous catalysis. However, the latter is preferred for large-scale applications. By incorporating the homogeneous organometallic complex onto an appropriate support, the unique features of both types of catalysts can be combined and utilized effectively. Herein, we synthesized an immobilized PN 3 P-Ir pincer catalyst ( 2 ) supported onto KCC-1, a 3D fibrous silica nanosphere that exhibits a high surface area and contains a tetracoordinate aluminum site. To reduce the use of volatile additives, the choice of cesium formate (CsO 2 CH) was found to be crucial as at 80–90 °C, CsO 2 CH could act as a reaction medium and serve as basic additive. Remarkable reactivities under neat conditions were achieved with a TOF of 13,290 h -1 and a TON of up to 540,000. The comparative study indicates a significant improvement of 2 from its homogenous counterpart, PN 3 P-IrH 3 ( 1 ).

Abstract:Safe and efficient hydrogen storage is one of the key technologies for the widespread utilization of hydrogen energy. Formic acid (FA) is regarded as a safe and convenient chemical hydrogen storage material. However, the lack of highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts hinders its practical application. Herein, we presented a facile wet-impregnated deposition method to synthesize ultrafine AuPd alloy nanoparticles anchored on TiO2 nanosheets (AuPd/TiO2 nanosheets) which were used as high efficient catalysts for the dehydrogenation of FA. TiO2 nanosheets were calcined at different temperatures to modify the catalytic activity of catalyst. AuPd/TiO2 nanosheets-400 exhibits the superior activity for catalyzing the FA to release 96% of overall hydrogen content with an initial turnover frequency value of 592 mol H-2 mol(-1) metal h(-1) at 25 degrees C and low activation energy of 11.8 kJ mol(-1). Detailed characterizations show that the superior catalytic performance can be ascribed to the alloy structure of AuPd centers, the phase and crystallinity of TiO2 nanosheets, and the strong electron transfer interaction between AuPd nanoparticles and TiO2 nanosheets substrate.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA), a high-value product of CO 2 hydrogenation and biomass conversion, is considered a promising liquid organic hydrogen carrier for its high hydrogen content, easy accessibility, and relative stability. The development of an efficient heterogeneous catalyst toward FA dehydrogenation and Cr(VI) reduction by FA is needed to boost its sluggish kinetics but still remains a challenge. Herein, uniformly dispersed subnanometric PdAu alloy clusters (i.e., 0.9 nm) were successfully prepared and confined by amine-functionalized carbon bowls (ACB). By virtue of the tiny size and abundant active sites of PdAu clusters, the promotional effect of surface amine groups, and electronic interaction between subnanometric PdAu clusters and support, this as-prepared PdAu/ACB catalyst exhibits superior catalytic property for additive-free FA dehydrogenation (turnover frequency, 10597 h −1 at 323 K) and Cr(VI) reduction (rate constant, 0.47 min −1 at 298 K) under mild conditions, higher than most of the catalysts reported so far. This study offers insight into the design of efficient and durable catalysts for various catalytic applications in energy and environment.

Abstract:The development of cost-effective heterogeneous catalysts for the dehydrogenation of formic acid (FA) is the key challenge for the commercialization of FA as a hydrogen-storage medium. Herein, PdCoNi nanoparticles (NPs) with different element ratios supported on N-doped carbon nanosheets (N-CN) were designed, which exhibit excellent catalytic dehydrogenation performance for FA. Compared with PdCoNi NPs loaded on the carbon nanosheets (CN), the introduction of pyrrolic N to CN induces the formation of ultrafine, monodispersed and amorphous Pd0.6Co0.2Ni0.2 NPs with a size of 1.60 nm, which significantly increases the number of active sites and the instant contact between FA and catalysts. The as-prepared Pd0.6Co0.2Ni0.2/N-CN catalyst shows more than 99% conversion and 100% H2 selectivity at room temperature, with a record-high initial turnover frequency (TOFinitial) of 1249.0 h−1 among non-noble containing Pd-based catalysts, which demonstrates the high potential of Pd0.6Co0.2Ni0.2/N-CN as a practical catalyst for the hydrogen generation from FA.
Synergistic Electronic Interaction in PdCu Alloy/TiO2-NSs for Ambient Efficient Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid.

Abstract:Palladium-based catalysts are remarkable in endorsing hydrogen (H2) generation through formic acid (HCOOH, FA) dehydrogenation under near-ambient conditions. Hydrogen energy efficiency depends on high-performance catalyst design. In this study, Pd-Cu nanoalloy catalysts with mutable atomic ratios are successfully fabricated on TiO2 nanosheets (TiO2-NSs).The synergistic electronic interactions between Palladium (Pd) and copper (Cu) are revealed through a density of states (DOS) analysis of alloy supported over a mixed valence state of Ti linked to oxygen vacancies (Vo) in TiO2-NSs, Enhanced adsorption of target molecules reveals novel active sites for Formic acid dehydrogenation (FAD), with O─H bond cleavage via HCOO formate intermediate preceding C─H and C─O bond cleavage. Experimental and theoretical research demonstrates that the Pd-Cu/TiO2-NSs (3:7) catalyst d electron redistribution and d-band center shift lower the activation energy for O─H bond cleavage, exhibit superior H2 production than pure Pd and Cu, increasing Pd electron density due to synergistic effects from reactive crystal facets, defects, and strong metal support interactions (SMSI), lowering the activation energy for HCOOH dissociation step, generating carbon dioxide (CO2) and H2 with a unprecedented high turnover frequency (TOF) of 6268 molH2.h-1.molPd-1 at 303K with activation energy (Ea) of 15 KJ mol-1. This attempt models an efficient HCOOH-to-hydrogen catalyst.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA, HCOOH), as a liquid chemical hydrogen storage carrier with low cost, high hydrogen content, and convenient storage and transportation, has attracted extensive attention. Pd-based catalysts for hydrogen production from FA are easy to aggregate and deactivate in the reaction process, which hinders the further development of FA as a hydrogen storage carrier. Therefore, the exploitation of carriers with simple preparation methods and excellent performance can effectively improve the catalytic activity of Pd-based catalysts. Porous carbon and SiO2 have been widely used for their unique structural properties, and the preparation of composite carriers by combining the advantages of both is a current research hotspot. Herein, this work synthesized C–SiO2 for the deposition of Pd nanoparticles by a one-step method, and the obtained Pd/C–SiO2 exhibits a superior FA dehydrogenation activity with a turnover frequency value of 1278 h−1 and a favorable stability with only a slight decrease in activity after five cycles.

Robust Hydrogen Production from Additive-Free Formic Acid via Mesoporous Silica-Confined Pd-ZrO 2 Nanoparticles at Room Temperature

Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) is becoming the most promising candidate for the future sustainable energy systems because it is clean and regenerable. Formic acid (FA, HCOOH), one of the high-value products of the biological metabolic process and the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2), is considered to be the most efficient hydrogen supplier because it is nontoxic and easy to store and transport and has high hydrogen content. Herein, Pd-ZrO2 nanoparticles (NPs) immobilized in amine-modified mesoporous silica (Pd-ZrO2/SBA-15-NH2) with ultrasmall particle size (1.5 nm) and high dispersion are successfully prepared and applied as an effective catalyst toward the additive-free dehydrogenation of FA at ambient conditions. As a result of the synergistic electronic effects of Pd and ZrO2, the strong interaction between the Pd-ZrO2 NPs and SBA-15-NH2 substrates and the abundant basic sites originated from ZrO2 and −NH2 groups, the as-prepared Pd-ZrO2/SBA-15-NH2 catalyst possesses 100% hydrogen selectivity as well as unexpected catalytic performance with a high turnover frequency value of 1408 h–1 toward CO-free hydrogen production from FA at 298 K, which is even better than most of the effective Pd-based heterogeneous catalysts ever reported.
