Abstract:Immersive virtual reality systems employing head-mounted displays offer great promise for the investigation of perception and action, but there are well-documented limitations to most virtual reality systems. In the present article, we suggest strategies for studying perception/action interactions that try to depend on both scale-invariant metrics (such as power function exponents) and careful consideration of the requirements of the interactions under investigation. New data concerning the effect of pincushion distortion on the perception of surface orientation are presented, as well as data documenting the perception of dynamic distortions associated with head movements with uncorrected optics. A review of several successful uses of virtual reality to study the interaction of perception and action emphasizes scale-free analysis strategies that can achieve theoretical goals while minimizing assumptions about the accuracy of virtual simulations.

Abstract:The effect of interaction characteristics such as display size and active/passive navigation on spatial representation was investigated when participants repeatedly navigated complex three-dimensional virtual maze. The study was divided into two main phases: learning and test. Participants navigated respectively under active or passive navigation style and two display sizes condition during learning phase. Spatial representation was examined by testing estimation of directions in the environment. Participants judged more accurately in active navigation and large projection display condition than in passive navigation and desktop monitor condition. Findings further show that the effects of active or passive navigation style and display size on spatial representation are dependent.

Abstract:The effect of navigation style and display size on navigation performance was investigated when participants navigated in three-dimensional virtual mazes under different navigation aids and display size condition. The study was divided into two main phases: 1) training and 2) testing using a mock navigation task. Findings show that the combined impact of both navigation style and display size on navigation performance in virtual environments. Abstract:We report the impact of display characteristics (stereo and size) on task performance in diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (DMRI) in a user study with 12 participants. The hypotheses were that (1) adding stereo and increasing display size would improve task accuracy and reduce completion time, and (2) the greater the complexity of a spatial task, the greater the benefits of an improved display. Thus we expected to see greater performance gains when detailed visual reasoning was required. Participants used dense streamtube visualizations to perform five representative tasks: (1) determine the higher average fractional anisotropy (FA) values between two regions, (2) find the endpoints of fiber tracts, (3) name a bundle, (4) mark a brain lesion, and (5) judge if tracts belong to the same bundle. Contrary to our hypotheses, we found the task completion time was not improved by the use of the larger display and that performance accuracy was hurt rather than helped by the introduction of stereo in our study with dense DMRI data. Bigger was not always better. Thus cautious should be taken when selecting displays for scientific visualization applications. We explored the results further using the body-scale unit and subjective size and stereo experiences.
Distance effects on visual search and visually guided freehand interaction on large displays

Abstract:Different from mouse-based and touch-based interactions at a static distance, motion-sensing interaction on a large display is typically performed at varying distances ranging from an arm's length to several metres. To investigate the effect of distance on visual search and freehand interaction performance, an empirical experiment was conducted; 30 participants were recruited to complete a series of target search and freehand selection tasks on large displays, which were 1.6 and 2.4 m wide, respectively. The results indicated that (1) the user-preferred viewing distance was positively related to the physical size of the display: a larger display size corresponded to a larger viewing distance. (2) The viewing distance had a two-sided effect on the visual search time efficiency. At a close range, increasing distance improved the search time efficiency; but at a farther range, the efficiency decreased. (3) An optimal field of view at which visual search was most efficient was found; (4) however, increasing the distance lowered freehand interaction efficiency and accuracy. Changing the distance also caused variations in the performance on divided large display areas: (5) the visual search efficiency on the upper area was higher than that on the lower area, increasing the distance reduced the difference; (6) freehand interaction efficiency and accuracy on the lower area outperformed that on the upper area, increasing the distance also reduced the difference. Implications were discussed for building more efficient and user-friendly large display based user interfaces.

Abstract:We present a conceptual model that describes the effect of pixel size on target acquisition. We demonstrate the use of our conceptual model by applying it to predict and explain the results of an experiment to evaluate users' performance in a target acquisition task involving three distinct display sizes: standard desktop, small and large displays. The results indicate that users are fastest on standard desktop displays, undershoots are the most common error on small displays and overshoots are the most common error on large displays. We propose heuristics to maintain usability when changing displays. Finally, we contribute to the growing body of evidence that amplitude does affect performance in a display-based pointing task.

Abstract:In perceptual psychology, estimations of visual depth and size under different spatial layouts have been extensively studied. However, research evidence in virtual environments (VE) is relatively lacking. The emergence of human-computer interaction (HCI) and virtual reality (VR) has raised the question of how human operators perform actions based on the estimation of visual properties in VR, especially when the sensory cues associated with the same object are conflicting. We report on an experiment in which participants compared the size of a visual sphere to a haptic sphere, belonging to the same object in a VE. The sizes from the visual and haptic modalities were either identical or conflicting (with visual size being larger than haptic size, or vice versa). We used three standard haptic references (small, medium, and large sizes) and asked participants to compare the visual sizes with the given reference, by method of constant stimuli. Results show a dominant functional priority of the visual size perception. Moreover, observers demonstrated a central tendency effect: over-estimation for smaller haptic sizes but under-estimation for larger haptic sizes. The results are in-line with previous studies in real environments (RE). We discuss the current findings in the framework of adaptation level theory for haptic size reference. This work provides important implications for the optimal design of human-computer interactions when integrating 3D visual-haptic information in a VE.

Abstract:Visual perception is vital for people's spatial experience. Many factors correlate with visual perception including spatial size, material, color, and geometry. However, studies systematically exploring spatial size are sparse, especially with regard to the interactions between the factors of spatial size. In this study, 15 indoor virtual reality environments with five widths and three heights were used to examine the influence of spatial size on visual perception. The study adopted a preference survey as the primary data-gathering tool assessed using a factorial analysis of variance. The results revealed that the influence of width and height on peoples' preference levels for the indoor virtual reality environments was significant. However, the preference level did not always improve with an increase in width and/or height. A certain spatial size may enhance or contradict visual perception, but changing the width and height does not always exert a significantly different effect on the preference evaluation for the virtual reality environment. This study proposes a new idea that an indoor virtual environment that can adjust its spatial size can be used as a supplement to improve the quality of a real environment.

Abstract:The presence of pictorial depth cues in virtual environments is important for minimising distortions driven by unnatural viewing conditions (e.g., vergence-accommodation conflict). Our aim was to determine how different pictorial depth cues affect size constancy in virtual environments under binocular and monocular viewing conditions. We systematically removed linear perspective cues and textures of a hallway in a virtual environment. The experiment was performed using the method of constant stimuli. The task required participants to compare the size of 'far' (10 m) and 'near' (5 m) circles displayed inside a virtual environment with one or both or none of the pictorial depth cues. Participants performed the experiment under binocular and monocular viewing conditions while wearing a virtual reality headset. ANOVA revealed that size constancy was greater for both the far and the near circles in the virtual environment with pictorial depth cues compared to the one without cues. However, the effect of linear perspective cues was stronger than textures, especially for the far circle. We found no difference between the binocular and monocular viewing conditions across the different virtual environments. We conclude that linear perspective cues exert a stronger effect than textures on the perceptual rescaling of far stimuli placed in the virtual environment, and that this effect does not vary between binocular and monocular viewing conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Immersive virtual reality (VR) technology has become a popular method for fundamental and applied spatial cognition research. One challenge researchers face is emulating walking in a large-scale virtual space although the user is in fact in a small physical space. To address this, a variety of movement interfaces in VR have been proposed, from traditional joysticks to teleportation and omnidirectional treadmills. These movement methods tap into different mental processes of spatial learning during navigation, but their impacts on distance perception remain unclear. In this paper, we investigated the role of visual display, proprioception, and optic flow on distance perception in a large-scale building by manipulating four different movement methods. Eighty participants either walked in a real building, or moved through its virtual replica using one of three movement methods: VR-treadmill, VR-touchpad, and VR-teleportation. Results revealed that, first, visual display played a major role in both perceived and traversed distance estimates but did not impact environmental distance estimates. Second, proprioception and optic flow did not impact the overall accuracy of distance perception, but having only an intermittent optic flow (in the VR-teleportation movement method) impaired the precision of traversed distance estimates. In conclusion, movement method plays a significant role in distance perception but does not impact the configurational knowledge learned in a large-scale real and virtual building, and the VR-touchpad movement method provides an effective interface for navigation in VR.

Abstract:With the rapid advance of real-time computer graphics, head-mounted displays (HMDs) have become popular tools for 3D visualization. One of the most promising and challenging future uses of HMDs, however, is in applications where virtual environments enhance rather than replace real environments. In such applications, a virtual image is superimposed on a real image. The unique problem raised by this superimposition is the difficulty that the human visual system may have in integrating information from these two environments. As a starting point to studying the problem of information integration in see-through environments, we investigate the quantification of depth and size perception of virtual objects relative to real objects in combined real and virtual environments. This starting point leads directly to the important issue of system calibration, which must be completed before perceived depth and sizes are measured. Finally, preliminary experimental results on the perceived depth of spatially nonoverlapping real and virtual objects are presented.
Effects of Depth Layer Switching between an Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Display and a Body-Proximate Display

Abstract:Optical see-through head-mounted displays (OST HMDs) typically display virtual content at a fixed focal distance while users need to integrate this information with real-world information at different depth layers. This problem is pronounced in body-proximate multi-display systems, such as when an OST HMD is combined with a smartphone or smartwatch. While such joint systems open up a new design space, they also reduce users' ability to integrate visual information. We quantify this cost by presenting the results of an experiment (n=24) that evaluates human performance in a visual search task across an OST HMD and a body-proximate display at 30 cm. The results reveal that task completion time increases significantly by approximately 50 % and the error rate increases significantly by approximately 100 % compared to visual search on a single depth layer. These results highlight a design trade-off when designing joint OST HMD-body proximate display systems.

Effects of Visual Variables on the Perception of Distance in Off-Screen Landmarks: Size, Color Value, and Crispness

Abstract:Maps on mobile devices provide the convenience of accessing spatial information of the surroundings. They also raise the concern that the small screen size impacts user’s acquisition of spatial knowledge as the small size causes the fragmentation of spatial knowledge. This fragmentation leads to the expense of more cognitive efforts and degradation of spatial knowledge. Following some effective approaches of representing distance to off-screen locations as contextual cues, this paper reports a design that incorporates not only the direction but also the distance using symbols. In addition, this study uses three different visual variables including size, color value, and crispness at the ordinal level of measurement and then compares their effectiveness on the perception of distance. Results show that color value contributes the least to the perception of distance. Size leads to slightly higher accuracy than crispness in comparing distances of off-screen landmarks. This study provides valuable information to further explore the impacts of different visual variables that could facilitate the acquisition of spatial knowledge on mobile devices. This study also points out the necessity of follow-up studies to clarify some issues in the current design as well as its impact on actual wayfinding performance.

Abstract:The perception of physical objects and miniatures enhances the realism and immersion in VR. This work explores the relationship between haptic feedback from real objects and their visual representations in VR. The study examines how users confirm and adjust the sizes of different virtual objects. The results show that as the size of the virtual cubes increases, users are less likely to perceive the size correctly and need more adjustments. This research provides insights into how haptic sensations and visual inputs interact, contributing to the understanding of visual-haptic illusions in VR environments.

Spatial 3-D Display System Based On Sequential Effect

Abstract:In order to generate a true 3D image providing viewers true depth cues, such as binocular parallax, accommodation and convergence, motion parallax, etc, a volumetric three-dimension display system has been developed based on the time sequential display of a rotational two dimension LED array which is controlled by a high speed microchips sequentially. The 3D data source is obtained from 3DS files, and mapped to the 2D LED panel by space encoding. Due to the visual persistence, observers could see full three-dimensional images without the need for special viewing glasses. The system can provide above 200,000 voxels (volume pixels) in a cylinder display space with a diameter of 305.6 mm and a height of 76 mm. The principle of the system and the display performance have been investigated by relating the display panel pixel arrangement and the reconstructed three-dimensional image. The display results of real animate three-dimensional images are presented and proved that the volumetric display system has the wide-ranging application prospect.
The Effects of Peripheral Vision and Light Stimulation on Distance Judgments Through HMDs

Abstract:Egocentric distances are often underestimated in virtual environments through head-mounted displays (HMDs). Previous studies suggest that peripheral vision can influence distance perception. Specifically, light in the periphery may improve distance judgments in HMDs. In this study, we conducted a series of experiments with varied peripheral treatments around the viewport. First, we found that the peripheral brightness significantly influences distance judgments when the periphery is brighter than a certain threshold, and found a possible range where the threshold was in. Second, we extended our previous research by changing the size of the peripheral treatment. A larger visual field (field of view of the HMD) resulted in significantly more accurate distance judgments compared to our original experiments with black peripheral treatment. Last, we found that applying a pixelated peripheral treatment can also improve distance judgments. The result implies that augmenting peripheral vision with secondary low-resolution displays may improve distance judgments in HMDs.

Abstract:Extended reality technology has become a useful tool in many applications, but still suffers from visual deviations that can hamper the utility of the technology. This paper discusses the types of persisting visual deviations experienced when observing the natural world through video see-through head-mounted displays. A generalizable method to measure the effect of these deviations on real-world interaction is designed and used in a human-in-the-loop experiment. The experiment compared video see-through sight through an head-mounted display with normal eyesight in a static set-up, focusing on (camera) lens distortions and display deviations. Participants interacted with a real touchscreen, locating the position of flashed markers shortly after disappearance comparing both conditions to check for deviations in position and time. Results show significant larger mean distance errors between the interaction locations and the original marker positions for video see-through compared to normal eyesight. Moreover, errors increase towards the screen periphery. No significant distance error improvement over time was found, however, response times did significantly decrease for both types of sight.

Abstract:Spatial perception plays a critical role in virtual worlds and real environments, as it can impact navigation abilities. To understand this influence, the conducted study investigated the effects of human characteristics and immersion levels on the exocentric distance estimation process in virtual environments. As the first step, a virtual environment was implemented for both desktop and Gear VR head-mounted displays. Afterward, the exocentric distance estimation skills of 229 university students were examined. Out of these students, 157 used the desktop display, and 72 used the Gear VR. Using logistic regression analysis and linear regression analysis methods, their effects on the probabilities of accurate estimates and their estimation times were investigated. According to the results, gender, video game playtime per week, height, and display device had significant effects on the former, whereas dominant hand, video game playtime per week, height, and display device had significant effects on the latter. The results also show that by using the head-mounted display, the likelihood of the students estimating exocentric distances accurately significantly decreased; however, they were significantly faster with it. These findings can influence the development of more accessible and effective virtual environments in the future.

Abstract:We performed a mixed-design study with 56 participants to compare the effect of horizontal FOV (hfov) and vertical FOV (vfov) on egocentric distance perception in four different realistic virtual environments (VEs). We also compared VE attributes of indoor/outdoor and cluttered/uncluttered. The participants blind-walked towards four different targets at 3m, 4m, 5m, and 6m distance while wearing a backpack computer and a wide FOV head-mounted display (HMD). The combinations of 165°, 110° and 45° hfovs, and 110° and 35° vfovs was simulated in the same HMD. The results indicated more accurate distance judgement with larger hfov with no significant effect of vfov. More accurate distance judgement in indoor VEs compared to outdoor VEs was observed. Also, participants judged distances more accurately in cluttered environments versus uncluttered environments. These results highlight that the environment is important in distance-critical VR applications and wider hfov should be considered for an improved distance judgment.
