Abstract:Modern cold-water corals (CWCs) occur in a wide range of water depths, with Desmophyllum pertusum being one of the most common species. Pleistocene, Holocene, and modern coral mound formation by living CWC reefs have previously been described in the Porcupine Seabight from water depths greater than 700 m in the vicinity of the transitional zone between the Eastern North Atlantic Water and Mediterranean Outflow Water. Here we document occurrence of fossil corals retrieved from two cores at 370 m depth in the Macnas Mounds, a relatively shallow occurrence for mounds on the Irish shelf-edge. Both cores feature D. pertusum restricted to the upper two metres, immediately overlying an erosive surface and a coeval major down-core change in grain size from sand to mud. Radiocarbon dating of coral specimens indicates the CWC mounds initiated 7.82 Cal ky BP. Our study unequivocally documents the existence of Holocene shelf-edge coral mounds in the eastern Porcupine Seabight and highlights the possibility of other occurrences of CWCs in similar settings elsewhere in the northeast Atlantic. Given that no living CWCs were encountered in the study area, we suggest that the area previously experienced more favourable conditions for CWC mound initiation and development along the shelf-edge margin, possibly due to differing conditions in the European Slope Current which flows northward along the continental slope from south of the Porcupine Bank to the Faroe-Shetland Channel.

Abstract:The skeletons of aragonitic corals carry essential information about oceanic environmental changes in the past. However, coral-based geochemical proxies are sensitive to vital effect and post-depositional diagenetic processes, which have not been well understood for deep-sea corals. In this study, we have investigated the mineralization and early diagenetic process of the dendroid stem of a dead deep-sea scleractinian coral sample (Madrepora oculata) collected by Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) from a seamount in the Caroline Ridge, western Pacific. Despite being only similar to 270 years old, as dated by the U-series disequilibrium method, this sample already has extensive diagenesis including a visible chalky layer. The outermost chalky layer and the adjacent pristine skeleton of the sample were characterized by multiple mineralogical (SEM, XRD, EBSD, Raman Spectroscopy) and geochemical (ICP-OES, LA-ICP-MS, IR-MS, MC-ICP-MS) techniques. Skeletal stable C and O isotopes display strong linearity, with a trend pointing toward the theoretical isotopic composition of inorganically-precipitated aragonite from local seawater. This observation suggests that the epithecal mineralization of M. oculata is far from equilibrium with seawater and can be quantitatively explained by bio-mineralization models developed for solitary scleractinian corals. We further show that chalking of the outer layer, a common feature in sub-fossilized deep-sea corals, is caused by microbial-driven boring and mu m-scale dissolution voids at an average rate of 3.5 mu mol/cm(2)/y (scaled to the skeleton surface) without notable secondary infillings or mineralogical alternations. The higher average delta C-13 and delta O-18 of the chalky part than the pristine part might be due to the preferential dissolution of carbonate relatively depleted in C-13 and O-18 during alteration, and/or reduced isotope fractionation from seawater during coral mineralization of the outer layer. The chalky layer shows significantly higher Mn/Ca and Th/Ca ratios than the pristine part, characterized by Th/Mn ratios similar to that of the dissolved component of local seawater. Our study suggests that the incorporation of external Th into the coral skeleton is most likely associated with organic binding rather than detrital contamination, secondary carbonate mineral formation, adsorption onto surfaces of chalky aragonite or ferromanganese oxides, with important implications for coral U-series geochronology.
A New Model of the Formation of Pennsylvanian Iron Carbonate Concretions Hosting Exceptional Soft-Bodied Fossils in Mazon Creek, Illinois.

Abstract:Preservation of Pennsylvanian-aged (307Ma) soft-bodied fossils from Mazon Creek, Illinois, USA, is attributed to the formation of siderite concretions, which encapsulate the remains of terrestrial, freshwater, and marine flora and fauna. The narrow range of positive S-34 values from pyrite in individual concretions suggests microenvironmentally limited ambient sulfate, which may have been rapidly exhausted by sulfate-reducing bacteria. Tissue of the decaying carcass was rapidly encased by early diagenetic pyrite and siderite produced within the sulfate reduction and methanogenic zones of the sediment, with continuation of the latter resulting in concretion cementation. Cross-sectional isotopic analyses (C-13 and O-18) and mineralogical characterization of the concretions point to initiation of preservation in high porosity proto-concretions during the early phases of microbially induced decay. The proto-concretion was cemented prior to compaction of the sediments by siderite as a result of methanogenic production of C-13-rich bicarbonatewhich varies both between Essex and Braidwood concretions and between fossiliferous and unfossiliferous concretions. This work provides the first detailed geochemical study of the Mazon Creek siderite concretions and identifies the range of conditions allowing for exceptional soft-tissue fossil formation as seen at Mazon Creek.

Abstract:Two accretionary sediment sequences from Sites 1245 and 1252 recovered during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 204 at southern Hydrate Ridge were investigated to explore the response of geochemical partitioning of iron and sulfur isotopic composition of authigenic pyrite to non-steady-state depositional and diagenetic scenarios. Five iron species were characterized by a modified sequential extraction procedure that covers almost all iron-bearing minerals in sediment cores, including: (1) iron-bearing carbonates, mainly siderite; (2) ferric (hydr)oxides, probably ferrihydrite and/or lepidocrocite; (3) magnetite; (4) iron-bearing silicates; and (5) pyrite. Highly reactive iron has been accumulated for a long-term steady-state history and its pyritization, to varying degrees, is limited by availability of dissolved sulfide. This causes pyrite and siderite occurred in the same sedimentary layer and shows an inverse relationship between their concentrations. From this, their proportions to highly reactive iron can be chosen for evaluating the degree of sulfidization. A significant change in sulfur isotopic composition of pyrite (-42.4 to +16.8‰ VCDT) indicates that the steady-state conditions are dramatically limited, where the δ 34 S values higher than -20‰ may result from an upward shift of SMT zone close to the seafloor or a sudden, massive depositional event. To explain the downcore sulfidization effects and pyrite δ 34 S values, we developed two categories of conceptual scenarios based on variations in sedimentation rate and methane flux. The geochemical features similar to those derived from each scenario were searched in the sediment columns and the non-steady-state events behind the scenarios were proved to be consistent with the real observations. Thus, iron species and pyrite δ 34 S values can be regarded as a proxy to differentiate different non-steady-state depositional and diagenetic controls on the sedimentary record.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities increase the level of dissolved heavy metals in some tropical near‐shore environments threatening reef ecosystems. The skeleton of stony corals like Porites species potentially provides a high‐resolution geochemical archive for past heavy metal concentrations, with potentially century long records revealing baseline values before large‐scale human disturbance. However, few data exist for heavy metal partitioning into coral skeleton aragonite. To address this, culturing experiments exposing Porites lobata and Porites lichen to a mixture of dissolved Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb over a wide concentration range have been performed. Water samples were taken frequently to monitor changes in the heavy metal concentration. Laser ablation ICP‐MS measurements of the coral aragonite revealed metal concentrations that were positively correlated with Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, Ag, Cd, and Pb concentrations in seawater. The DTE values for most metals appear dependent on the seawater metal content, approximating a power law, and therefore stabilize at higher seawater metal/Ca ratios. The partitioning of Pb into the coral skeleton is a notable exception, with DPb being stable around 2 to 1 across a large range of "natural" to highly polluted seawater Pb concentrations. This and the general agreement with partition coefficients estimated by previous work suggests that the reconstruction of the heavy metal concentration in seawater for ecosystem monitoring is possible. However, the high variability within and between coral colonies requires further study and suggests that multiple records from multiple coral colonies should be combined to obtain robust reconstructions.

Sulfur Cycling in an Iron Oxide-Dominated, Dynamic Marine Depositional System: The Argentine Continental Margin

Abstract:The interplay between sediment deposition patterns, organic matter type and the quantity and quality of reactive mineral phases determines the accumulation, speciation, and isotope composition of pore water and solid phase sulfur constituents in marine sediments. Here, we present the sulfur geochemistry of siliciclastic sediments from two sites along the Argentine continental slope—a system characterized by dynamic deposition and reworking, which result in non-steady state conditions. The two investigated sites have different depositional histories but have in common that reactive iron phases are abundant and that organic matter is refractory—conditions that result in low organoclastic sulfate reduction rates (SRR). Deposition of reworked, isotopically light pyrite and sulfurized organic matter appear to be important contributors to the sulfur inventory, with only minor addition of pyrite from organoclastic sulfate reduction above the sulfate-methane transition (SMT). Pore-water sulfide is limited to a narrow zone at the SMT. The core of that zone is dominated by pyrite accumulation. Iron monosulfide and elemental sulfur accumulate above and below this zone. Iron monosulfide precipitation is driven by the reaction of low amounts of hydrogen sulfide with ferrous iron and is in competition with the oxidation of sulfide by iron (oxyhydr)oxides to form elemental sulfur. The intervals marked by precipitation of intermediate sulfur phases at the margin of the zone with free sulfide are bordered by two distinct peaks in total organic sulfur (TOS). Organic matter sulfurization appears to precede pyrite formation in the iron-dominated margins of the sulfide zone, potentially linked to the presence of polysulfides formed by reaction between dissolved sulfide and elemental sulfur. Thus, SMTs can be hotspots for organic matter sulfurization in sulfide-limited, reactive iron-rich marine sedimentary systems. Furthermore, existence of elemental sulfur and iron monosulfide phases meters below the SMT demonstrates that in sulfide-limited systems metastable sulfur constituents are not readily converted to pyrite but can be buried to deeper sediment depths. Our data show that in non-steady state systems, redox zones do not occur in sequence but can reappear or proceed in inverse sequence throughout the sediment column, causing similar mineral alteration processes to occur at the same time at different sediment depths.

Molecular biosignatures reveal common benthic microbial sources of organic matter in ooids and grapestones from Pigeon Cay, The Bahamas

Abstract:Ooids are sedimentary grains that are distributed widely in the geologic record. Their formation is still actively debated, which limits our understanding of the significance and meaning of these grains in Earth's history. Central questions include the role played by microbes in the formation of ooids and the sources of ubiquitous organic matter within ooid cortices. To address these issues, we investigated the microbial community composition and associated lipids in modern oolitic sands at Pigeon Cay on Cat Island, The Bahamas. Surface samples were taken along a transect from the shallow, turbulent surf zone to calmer, deeper water. Grains transitioned from shiny and abraded ooids in the surf zone, to biofilm-coated ooids at about 3 m water depth. Further offshore, grapestones (cemented aggregates of ooids) dominated. Benthic diatoms and Proteobacteria dominated biofilms. Taxa that may promote carbonate precipitation were abundant, particularly those associated with sulfur cycling. Compared to the lipids associated with surface biofilms, relict lipids bound within carbonate exhibited remarkably similar profiles in all grain types. The enhanced abundance of methyl-branched fatty acids and β-hydroxy fatty acids, 1-O-monoalkyl glycerol ethers and hopanoids bound within ooid and grapestone carbonate confirms a clear association of benthic sedimentary bacteria with these grains. Lipids bound within ooid cortices also contain molecular indicators of microbial heterotrophic degradation of organic matter, possibly in locally reducing conditions. These included the loss of labile unsaturated fatty acids, enhanced long-chain fatty acids/short-chain fatty acids, enriched stable carbon isotopes ratios of fatty acids, and very high stanol/stenol ratios. To what extent some of these molecular signals are derived from later heterotrophic endolithic activity remains to be fully resolved. We speculate that some ooid carbonate forms in microbial biofilms and that early diagenetic degradation of biofilms may also play a role in early stage carbonate precipitation around ooids.
Refining the early Cambrian marine redox profile by using pyrite sulfur and iron isotopes

Abstract:It is widely accepted that the emergence of metazoans in the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition might be triggered by oxygenation of the atmosphere-ocean system. However, some Ediacaran and early Cambrian macroscopic fossils (such as multicellular algae) were preserved under sulfidic conditions, challenging the conventional view of the prohibition of eukaryotes in the presence of H2S. It was proposed that organisms might have lived in some episodic non-sulfidic intervals although the ocean was predominantly sulfidic. However, the hypothesized short-lived non-sulfidic intervals were hardly identified by traditional bulk sample analyses, which cannot provide sufficiently high temporal resolution to resolve the short-term oxygenation events. In this study, we analyzed pyritized sponge spicules and disseminated pyrites from black shales of the early Cambrian Shuijingtuo Formation in South China. We conducted in situ pyrite sulfur (δ34Spy) and iron (δ56Fepy) isotopes as well as bulk sample pyrite sulfur isotope analyses. The intra-crystal or intra-spicule δ34Spy variations reflect the evolution of seawater and porewater geochemistry during pyrite formation, providing a higher temporal resolution of redox fluctuation in the early Cambrian ocean. Our study indicates: (1) The bulk sample pyrite sulfur isotope and pyrite content data suggest diagenetic pyrite precipitation in sediment porewater with H2S diffusion from the overlying sulfidic seawater; (2) Limited intra-crystal and intra-spicule δ34Spy variations imply that both spicule and disseminate pyrites had a homogenous S source from sulfidic seawater, and dissimilatory sulfate reduction (DSR) in sediment porewater was negligible; (3) The in situ iron isotope analyses indicate active dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) in sediment that generated excessive ferrous iron (Fe2+) to compensate for Fe2+ consumption by pyrite precipitation, allowing Fe2+ to accumulate in ferruginous porewater. Therefore, the early Cambrian ocean was characterized by active DSR in sulfidic seawater and DIR in ferruginous sediment porewater. In addition, our study demonstrates that the seawater might be persistently sulfidic, and does not support the presence of intermittent non-sulfidic intervals for the survival of organisms. If correct, it is hypothesized that some primitive sponges might have survived in sulfidic seawater, although the seawater H2S concentration remains unknown.

Diversity and stability of coral endolithic microbial communities at a naturally high pCO2 reef

Abstract:The health and functioning of reef-building corals is dependent on a balanced association with prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes. The coral skeleton harbours numerous endolithic microbes, but their diversity, ecological roles and responses to environmental stress, including ocean acidification (OA), are not well characterized. This study tests whether pH affects the diversity and structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic algal communities associated with skeletons of Porites spp. using targeted amplicon (16S rRNA gene, UPA and tufA) sequencing. We found that the composition of endolithic communities in the massive coral Porites spp. inhabiting a naturally high pCO2 reef (avg. pCO2 811 μatm) is not significantly different from corals inhabiting reference sites (avg. pCO2 357 μatm), suggesting that these microbiomes are less disturbed by OA than previously thought. Possible explanations may be that the endolithic microhabitat is highly homeostatic or that the endolithic micro-organisms are well adapted to a wide pH range. Some of the microbial taxa identified include nitrogen-fixing bacteria (Rhizobiales and cyanobacteria), algicidal bacteria in the phylum Bacteroidetes, symbiotic bacteria in the family Endozoicomoniaceae, and endolithic green algae, considered the major microbial agent of reef bioerosion. Additionally, we test whether host species has an effect on the endolithic community structure. We show that the endolithic community of massive Porites spp. is substantially different and more diverse than that found in skeletons of the branching species Seriatopora hystrix and Pocillopora damicornis. This study reveals highly diverse and structured microbial communities in Porites spp. skeletons that are possibly resilient to OA.

Abstract:In terminal Ediacaran strata of South China, the onset of calcareous biomineralization is preserved in the paleontological transition from Conotubus to Cloudina in repetitious limestone facies of the Dengying Formation. Both fossils have similar size, funnel-in-funnel construction, and epibenthic lifestyle, but Cloudina is biomineralized, whereas Conotubus is not. To provide environmental context for this evolutionary milestone, we conducted a high-resolution elemental and stable isotope study of the richly fossiliferous Gaojiashan Member. Coincident with the first appearance of Cloudina is a significant positive carbonate carbon isotope excursion (up to + 6 parts per thousand) and an increase in the abundance and S-34 composition of pyrite. In contrast, delta S-34 values of carbonate-associated sulfate remain steady throughout the succession, resulting in anomalously large (>70 parts per thousand) sulfur isotope fractionations in the lower half of the member. The fractionation trend likely relates to changes in microbial communities, with sulfur disproportionation involved in the lower interval, whereas microbial sulfate reduction was the principal metabolic pathway in the upper. We speculate that the coupled paleontological and biogeochemical anomalies may have coincided with an increase in terrestrial weathering fluxes of sulfate, alkalinity, and nutrients to the depositional basin, which stimulated primary productivity, the spread of an oxygen minimum zone, and the development of euxinic conditions in subtidal and basinal environments. Enhanced production and burial of organic matter is thus directly connected to the carbon isotope anomaly, and likely promoted pyritization as the main taphonomic pathway for Conotubus and other soft-bodied Ediacara biotas. Our studies suggest that the Ediacaran confluence of ecological pressures from predation and environmental pressures from an increase in seawater alkalinity set the stage for an unprecedented geobiological response: the evolutionary novelty of animal biomineralization.
Fluid Flow, Mineralization and Deformation in an Oceanic Detachment Fault: Microtextural, Geochemical and Isotopic Evidence From Pyrite at 13°30′N on the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge

Abstract:Hydrothermal fluids in ultramafic‐hosted hydrothermal systems associated with oceanic detachment faults can be more oxidizing compared to mafic‐hosted vent sites. These fluids form a mineral assemblage of pyrite, magnetite and hematite. At 13°30′N on the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge, chlorite‐quartz breccias recovered from an exposed fault scarp contain pyrite, with abundant magnetite and hematite, indicating that the redox of the fluids was variable. In primary micron‐scale zonations in pyrite, Ni, Co, and Se have a decoupled relationship, recording fluctuations in the chemical composition and temperature of hydrothermal fluid as the grains grew. Secondary zonations that erase and overprint primary zonations are limited to the grain margin and permeable regions within the grain core. Secondary zonations formed via two processes: (a) grain dissolution followed by overgrowth, and (b) remobilization of metals during oxidizing fluid flow events. In both instances, Ni and Co have been mobilized and concentrated, and are not lost to the hydrothermal fluid. Superimposed on these features is evidence of grain scale deformation related to periods of fault movement along the detachment surface. Sulfur isotope ratios (δ34S) in pyrite systematically decrease from the grain margin to the grain core, indicating that increased amounts of sulfur were derived from thermochemical sulfate reduction of seawater. Thus, pyrite records the evolution of fluid flow and deformation events during exhumation along the detachment surface from ∼1 to 2 km below the seafloor at the base of the lava pile, with temporal fluctuations in fluid redox identified as an important process in controlling Ni and Co enrichment in pyrite.

Abstract:Two cores of intertidal mangrove sediments from the Tanmen and Qinglan Harbors on Hainan Island, China, were investigated for their geochemical characteristics of carbon, nitrogen, iron and sulfur and the pyrite morphology and framboidal pyrite size distribution.A modified sequential iron extraction procedure revealed extremely high FeHR/FeT ratios (0.81±0.07, n=28). The pyrite results determined by the nitric acid digestion and chromium reduction method show a strong correlation (r=0.91, n=28), indicating that most of the chromium-reducible sulfur is pyrite, whereas the proportion of elemental sulfur is minor. The organic carbon concentrations and the atomic C/N ratios demonstrate that the organic carbon in the mangrove sediments is derived predominantly from higher plants. The chromium-reducible sulfur (CRS) values show a good linear logarithmic correlation with the total organic carbon (TOC), indicating that the process of sulfate reduction increases rapidly with the concentration of TOC at Qinglan Harbor (QL), which has low TOC contents (<5wt%). In contrast, sulfate reduction increases slowly with high TOC (>5wt%) at Tanmen Harbor (TM). These data suggest that pyrite formation at the QL site is controlled by the TOC contents, whereas at the TM site, the primary factor controlling the pyritization process is the supply rate of sulfate. Both sites have significantly high sulfate contents (average 1.67±0.45wt% and 0.80±0.32wt% at Tanmen and Qinglan, respectively), which are isotopically depleted in 34S (average −6.15±7.17‰ and −6.72±7.33‰ at Tanmen and Qinglan, respectively) suggesting that the sulfate is mainly from the reoxidation of reduced sulfides (mainly pyrite) instead of seawater sulfate during burial.The distributions of pyrite textures suggest that the pyrite in the mangrove swamps is formed mainly as framboids and only a few pyrite crystals are formed directly as euhedral crystals. The high mean diameters and standard deviations (7.0±4.6μm and 6.1±4.1μm at Tanmen and Qinglan, respectively) are compatible with previous observations in oxic and dysoxic environments. At the TM site, we observed a notable double-hump phenomenon in the framboid size distribution and a greater number of secondary framboids between the 50 and 100cm layers, suggesting different pyrite growth events than are present at QL site. There are remarkable increases in the sulfur isotopic fractionations between the CRS and the acid-dissolvable sulfate in several layers of the QL site (e.g.,>10‰ at 10, 20, 80 and 110–120cm depths), demonstrating that the reoxidized sulfate could then be re-reduced to create greater 34S depletions in sulfides relative to the acid-dissolvable sulfate. In addition, the small mean diameters and standard deviations of framboid size in these layers are much closer to those of dysoxic sediments (e.g., the Peru margin) where the redox conditions may be suitable for the re-reduction of partial sulfate derived from the reoxidation of reduced sulfur. Generally, these data provide evidence that the sudden redox turnover caused by the oxygen input during ebb tides or bioturbation occurs in both mangrove swamps, leading to a significant reoxidation of reduced sulfurs.
Cyclic 100-ka (glacial-interglacial) migration of subseafloor redox zonation on the Peruvian shelf

Abstract:The coupling of subseafloor microbial life to oceanographic and atmospheric conditions is poorly understood. We examined diagenetic imprints and lipid biomarkers of past subseafloor microbial activity to evaluate its response to glacial-interglacial cycles in a sedimentary section drilled on the Peruvian shelf (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 201, Site 1229). Multiple and distinct layers of diagenetic barite and dolomite, i.e., minerals that typically form at the sulfate-methane transition (SMT), occur at much shallower burial depth than the present SMT around 30 meters below seafloor. These shallow layers co-occur with peaks of (13)C-depleted archaeol, a molecular fossil of anaerobic methane-oxidizing Archaea. Present-day, non-steady state distributions of dissolved sulfate also suggest that the SMT is highly sensitive to variations in organic carbon flux to the surface shelf sediments that may lead to shoaling of the SMT. Reaction-transport modeling substantiates our hypothesis that shallow SMTs occur in response to cyclic sediment deposition with a high organic carbon flux during interglacials and a low organic carbon flux during glacial stages. Long diffusion distances expectedly dampen the response of deeply buried microbial communities to changes in sediment deposition and other oceanographic drivers over relatively short geological time scales, e.g., glacial-interglacial periods. However, our study demonstrates how dynamically sediment biogeochemistry of the Peru Margin has responded to glacial-interglacial change and how these changes are now preserved in the geological record. Such changes in subsurface biogeochemical zonation need to be taken into account to assess the role of the subseafloor biosphere in global element and redox cycling.
Spatially Heterogenous Seawater Δ34s and Global Cessation of Ca-sulfate Burial During the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event

Abstract:The early Toarcian of the Early Jurassic saw a long-term positive carbon-isotope excursion (CIE) abruptly interrupted by a significant negative excursion (nCIE), associated with rapid global warming and an oceanic anoxic event (T-OAE, ∼183 Ma). However, the detailed processes and mechanisms behind widespread ocean deoxygenation are unclear. Here, we present high-resolution carbonate-associated sulfate sulfur-isotope (δ34SCAS) records spanning the late Pliensbachian–Toarcian (Pl–To) interval from the Tibetan Himalaya. We observe a large positive sulfur-isotope excursion (SIE) from ∼20‰ (around the Pl–To boundary) to ∼40‰ (around the end of the T-OAE nCIE), attributed to large-scale burial of reduced sulfur (pyrite and sulfurized organic matter) under widespread anoxic/euxinic conditions. Importantly, high δ34SCAS values were maintained into the mid–late Toarcian, even when global anoxic conditions diminished. The δ34S data confirm significant spatial heterogeneity in seawater δ34S compositions during the whole of the Toarcian, and provide strong evidence for a two-phase pattern of ocean deoxygenation. Upwelling of 34S-enriched equatorial deep water, affected by significant reduced-sulfur burial, likely caused the greatly amplified SIE in the formerly adjacent Tibetan area. By contrast, the dampened magnitude of the Toarcian SIE in Europe is attributed to a smaller, local reduced-sulfur sink. Box-modeling results indicate that the persistent post-T-OAE positive δ34S values were likely maintained because of a global reduction in Ca-sulfate (gypsum and anhydrite) burial driven by declining and continuously low seawater sulfate concentrations during and after the T-OAE. This geochemical pattern, albeit markedly reducing the total amount of global pyrite sequestration, increased the proportion of reduced to oxidized sulfur burial needed to generate the observed positive δ34S values.

Abstract:The increased difference in the sulfur isotopic compositions of sedimentary sulfate (carbonate‐associated sulfate: CAS) and sulfide (chromium‐reducible sulfur: CRS) during the Ediacaran Shuram excursion is attributed to increased oceanic sulfate concentration in association with the oxidation of the global ocean and atmosphere. However, recent studies on the isotopic composition of pyrites have revealed that CRS in sediments has diverse origins of pyrites. These pyrites are formed either in the water column/shallow sediments, where the system is open with respect to sulfate, or in deep sediments, where the system is closed with respect to sulfate. The δ34S value of sulfate in the open system is equal to that of seawater; on the contrary, the δ34S value of sulfate in the closed system is higher than that of seawater. Therefore, obtaining the isotopic composition of pyrites formed in an open system, which most likely retain microbial sulfur isotope fractionation, is essential to reconstruct the paleo‐oceanic sulfur cycle. In this study, we carried out multiple sulfur isotope analyses of CRS and mechanically separated pyrite grains (>100 μm) using a fluorination method, in addition to secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) analyses of in situ δ34S values of pyrite grains in drill core samples of Member 3 of the Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation in the Three Gorges area, South China. The isotope fractionation of microbial sulfate reduction (MSR) in the limestone layers of the upper part of Member 3 was calculated to be 34ε = 55.7‰ and 33λ = 0.5129 from the δ34S and Δ33S' values of medium‐sized pyrite grains ranging from 100 to 300 μm and the average δ34S and Δ33S' values of CAS. Model calculations revealed that the influence of sulfur disproportionation on the δ34S values of these medium‐sized pyrite grains was insignificant. In contrast, within the dolostone layers of the middle part of Member 3, isotope fractionation was determined to be 34ε = 47.5‰. The 34ε value in the middle part of Member 3 was calculated from the average δ34S values of the rim of medium‐sized pyrite grains and the average δ34S values of CAS. This observation revealed an increase in microbial sulfur isotope fractionation during the Shuram excursion at the drill core site. Furthermore, our investigation revealed correlations between δ34SCRS values and CRS concentrations and between CRS and TOC concentrations, implying that organic matter load to sediments controlled the δ34SCRS values rather than oceanic sulfate concentrations. However, these CRS and TOC concentrations are local parameters that can change only at the kilometer scale with local redox conditions and the intensity of primary production. Therefore, the decreasing δ34SCRS values likely resulted from local redox conditions and not from a global increase in the oceanic sulfate concentration.

Abstract:Abstract Carbonate‐associated sulfate (CAS) δ 34 S values (δ 34 S CAS ) are generally assumed to reflect S isotopic composition of paleo‐seawater and have been extensively used to reconstruct secular variations in seawater sulfate concentrations during the geological past. However, it has often been documented that δ 34 S CAS records are incompatible with seawater sulfur isotopes (20.9 ± 0.1%, 2σ) determined from other archives, such as sulfate evaporites and barite (both of which may also display inconsistencies). A possible explanation for this discrepancy is that δ 34 S CAS values can be easily altered by atmospheric sulfate and sulfide re‐oxidation. However, the specific influence of biological factors (vital effects, common in biogenic carbonates) on CAS S isotopic composition remains unresolved, particularly at microscale levels. To elucidate these effects on δ 34 S CAS , S isotopic profiles were analyzed across two skeletal transects of two modern deep‐sea corals ( gorgonia ) using a novel secondary‐ion mass spectrometry method. Strong S isotopic fractionation was observed in calcitic skeletons from the most 34 S‐depleted center (δ 34 S = ∼19‰), increasing outward to a relatively constant 22.5‰ in gorgonia sp. coral and 21.6‰ in bamboo coral, suggesting that vital effects are much larger than previous estimated (∼±1‰ fractionation from seawater). Oxygen isotopic and Mg, S, O elemental compositions, and Raman spectral and crystal morphological features indicate that processes such as pH control, Rayleigh fractionation, and organic effects are precluded as causes of such fractionation. Instead, vital effects associated with kinetic processes related to surface entrapment seem plausible as controls on S isotopic fractionations in the coral. This novel method is significant for gaining insights into vital effects, assessing the reliability of biogenic carbonates as high‐resolution environmental archives of S isotopes, and understanding the fundamental mechanisms governing biomineralization.

Abstract:Abstract Boron isotopic and elemental analysis of coral aragonite can give important insights into the calcification strategies employed in coral skeletal construction. Traditional methods of analysis have limited spatial (and thus temporal) resolution, hindering attempts to unravel skeletal heterogeneity. Laser ablation mass spectrometry allows a much more refined view, and here we employ these techniques to explore boron isotope and co-varying elemental ratios in the tropical coral Siderastrea siderea . We generate two-dimensional maps of the carbonate parameters within the calcification medium that deposited the skeleton, which reveal large heterogeneities in carbonate chemistry across the macro-structure of a coral polyp. These differences have the potential to bias proxy interpretations, and indicate that different processes facilitated precipitation of different parts of the coral skeleton: the low-density columella being precipitated from a fluid with a carbonate composition closer to seawater, compared to the high-density inter-polyp walls where aragonite saturation was ~ 5 times that of external seawater. Therefore, the skeleton does not precipitate from a spatially homogeneous fluid and its different parts may thus have varying sensitivity to environmental stress. This offers new insights into the mechanisms behind the response of the S. siderea skeletal phenotype to ocean acidification.
