Abstract:Medical tourism in Malaysia has grown over the years and has become a promising industry. However, due to the establishment of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), we see a spill-over effect where more Chinese people visit and seek medical treatments in Malaysia. Attracting these Chinese medical tourists has become a great competition as Malaysia is not the sole player in the South East Asia region. The objective of this study is to examine the factors influencing Malaysia as a medical tourism destination among Chinese medical tourists. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data from a sample of 600 respondents to test the hypothesized relationships. The data were analyzed using a structural equation modeling approach via AMOS and SPSS. The results show that country-specific factors (country knowledge, safety and security, accessibility, and price reasonableness) and social factors (word-of-mouth and social media) are significant predictors of the image of Malaysia as a medical tourism destination, which in turn, affect perceived value and intention to revisit. This study is one of the few that examines the perception of Chinese medical tourists, a lucrative market that contributes significantly to the global medical tourism industry. Theoretical and managerial implications of the research are discussed.

Abstract:<span>Medical tourism has developed rapidly and international health care has become a global industry. Indonesia has a great opportunity in the field of medical tourism, but Malaysia still ranks more highly in credibility by domestic and foreign residents in checking their health. The purpose of this study is to identify potential development of medical services with the concept of medical tourism in Indonesia by comparing with Malaysia. This study uses combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. In the initial stage, an explorative quantitative study was conducted and processed using factor analysis. Respondents consisted of 200 patients both from Indonesia and Malaysia who had studied medical tourism. To identify obstacles and solutions in implementing medical tourism-based medical services, researchers used descriptive qualitative research, in-depth interviews are conducted to obtain more detailed information, involving 11 informants from both the medical providers (general practitioners, specialist doctors, nurses, Indonesian Doctors Association Management, Health Services) and patients. The results showed that the perception of patients using health services regarding medical tourism services based on medical tourism in Indonesia and Malaysia demonstrates: trust, communication interactions, excellent service, affordable medical costs, modern medical technology, holistic service, increased patient expectations, short distances, and an Interesting Tourism object.</span>

Abstract:Purpose Following promising growth of the international medical tourism industry, competitions within the global market have escalated tremendously with increased involvement by numerous healthcare providers to acquire a share of its disposable income. The brand reputation would hereby play a determining role as a competitive strategy. Specifically, this paper aims to investigate the impact of social and marketing aspects on the brand image of medical tourism-based hospitals, alongside its relationship toward service quality. In turn, the influence of perceived service quality on satisfaction and the perceived value was examined, in view of further potential behavioral intention among medical tourists on healthcare providers in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach The data were collected through a survey questionnaire among medical tourists, with 596 successful cases collected via 6 major private hospitals at 3 popular Malaysian medical tourism locations. Data analysis was then performed using both SPSS and Smart PLS software. Findings The findings from the present study acknowledged the importance of both social (e.g. social media and word-of-mouth communications) and marketing (e.g. hospital advertisement and price perception) aspects toward establishing brand image among medical tourism-based hospitals. Consequently, the brand image would influence perceived service quality among medical tourists; further entail positive impact on behavioral intention, with satisfaction and perceived value as mediators between both factors. Following PLS predict analysis confirming this model’s high predictive capability, it demonstrated close representation to actual medical tourism scenario in Malaysia. Originality/value This study is one of the very few studies that explored the minimally investigated territory on the consequential importance of hospital branding within the medical tourism industry; specifically through extending the literature on the influence of social and marketing efforts toward the formation of brand image.

Abstract:Background Malaysia has been one of the most prominent destination countries for medical tourism. The industry received significant government support to create a conducive environment for its growth, such as the provision of an investment tax allowance for the facilities participating in medical tourism and the establishment of the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) to coordinate collaboration between various industry stakeholders to promote medical tourism activities at the international level and facilitate inbound medical tourists. The establishment of the MHTC facilitates collaboration between various industry stakeholders. In addition to facilitating medical tourism activities, MHTC is also involved in analysing relevant data, including but not limited to the socio-demography of medical tourists, the trend of their healthcare service utilisation, revenue generated, and market intelligence to promote the industry's growth. The council serves as a medium to facilitate the collaboration of stakeholders such as the hospitals participating in medical tourism, the Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia, the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health, and various government agencies, including the Ministry of Health and the Department of Immigration, Malaysia. We explore the policy-related implications of medical tourism and its relationship with the Malaysian national healthcare system. Methodology We revisited Pocock and Phua's conceptual framework of policy implications for medical tourism to explore its relevance after more than a decade of intensive government support and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. We employed a qualitative case study design using semi-structured, in-depth interviews with stakeholders from the Ministry of Health Malaysia, the private health sector, professional bodies, academics, and health-related civil society organisations. Results Our study found that many issues identified in the original framework remain relevant after over a decade. However, we also identified additional implications, such as the role of insurance portability in encouraging the growth of international hospital accreditation and the issue of equitable access to healthcare within the context of the current Malaysian healthcare system in the aftermath of COVID-19. Conclusion Due to its vulnerability, there is a need to develop a strategic collaboration that includes incorporating medical tourism activities into a broader framework, such as promoting aged care within the retirement destinations package for expatriates, which could ensure its sustainability instead of relying solely on medical tourism activities. In the meantime, policy implications arising from the industry remain relevant and should be addressed through a comprehensive structural reform of the national healthcare system involving stakeholders from the public and private health sectors.

Abstract:Word-of-Mouth (WOM) is an important element in marketing activities, including in the medical tourism industry. Medical tourism is the activity of traveling abroad for medical treatment. The positive experiences shared by other patients can increase patient confidence in treatment procedures and the selection of doctors and hospitals abroad. This study aims to analyze WOM communication as a promotional tool in the medical tourism industry based on the perspective of patients from Pekanbaru City who undergoing medical tourism to Malaysia. The study used a qualitative method by collecting data through in-depth interviews to 13 research informants consisting of 2 representatives from hospitals in Malaysia and 11 patients who had taken a medical tour to Malaysia. The results of the study found that in the medical tourism industry, WOM is an important element as a promotional tool seen from three aspects, namely the source of reference, the content of the message, and the credibility of the information. WOM communications for the medical tourism industry in Malaysia are sourced from references from other experienced patients, friends and family, medical practitioners and online e-WOM testimonials. The contents of WOM messages include treatment processes and procedures, medical costs, information about hospitals and doctors, as well as transportation and accommodation information. The credibility of WOM medical tourism information in Malaysia is based on information sourced from individuals who have direct experience, are recognized and trusted.

Abstract:Malaysia is a reputed destination for health tourism in the Asia Pacific region for its hospitable nature and good quality of service. Patients' satisfaction has been a key concern in health tourism to maintain the flow of tourists' arrival for medical purposes. By considering the importance of health tourism and patients' satisfaction in Malaysia, this study aimed to examine the influence of hospital environment, nutritional advice, perceived value on patients' satisfaction. This study is cross-sectional in nature and follows a quantitative approach. The researchers used questionnaires as a survey tool to obtain information from the respondents. The sample of this is chosen from Chinese exchange students in Malaysia. Using a systematic random sampling technique, 205 usable responses were selected from the respondents and proceeded with further analysis. The study conducted structural equation modeling using Smart PLS version 3. The results found that hospital environment, nutritional advice, and perceived value significantly influence patients' satisfaction in Malaysia.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to align the theoretical foundations of Halal tourism to conventional tourism paradigms. It investigates Muslim tourists’ perception of value in the context of tourist destinations in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach The partial least square structural equation modelling uses SMART–PLS for 170 Muslim tourists and uses a positive research approach with a quantitative basis of enquiry. Six variables of Muslim tourist perceived value, such as price, social, emotion and quality, and Halal physical and nonphysical attributes are examined. In addition, this study also examines the mediating effect of destination experience in Malaysia’s environment (i.e. infrastructure, atmosphere and culture) and the relationship between Muslim tourist perceived value and tourist satisfaction. Findings Overall, the results indicate that price and social variables had no impact on tourist satisfaction, whereas other variables such as quality, emotion and Halal physical and nonphysical attributes had a direct impact on tourist satisfaction especially with the mediating effect of destination experience. Practical implications The effects of cognitive, affective and Islamic (i.e. Halal) values on tourist satisfaction were examined as also the importance of destination experience on tourist satisfaction. Originality/value This study also found that destination experience influenced tourist satisfaction significantly.

Abstract:Recently, medical tourism has been considered as a profitable economic sector in developing countries. In this study, we have reviewed articles from 2000 to 2017 on medical tourism marketing in Asian countries. We have found that perceived service quality and satisfaction are the most important factors to attract medical tourists. Moreover, a lack of factors like coordination among medical market stakeholders, medical services quality, insurance coverage, and effective laws are the major barriers to medical travel cited in studies. The results suggest that more specific models should be presented for Asian medical marketing, especially in niche markets of this industry.

[Carpal instability associated with fracture in distal radius].

Abstract:Among 197 fractures in distal radius, 65 fractures were found accompanied with carpal instability, with an incidence of 32.9 percent. Six patterns of the instability were observed, in which dorsiflexion instability and scapholunate dissociation were predominant. The occurrence and patterns of instability were related to the types of the fractures, curve and palmar tilt angle of the distal radial articular surface. 64.9 percent of the instability was corrected during reduction of the fracture, but 35.1 percent remained. Compared with the fractures without carpal instability, functions of the wrists were worse in the fractures with the instability. The pathogenesis of these injuries and clinical significance of this study were discussed.

Abstract:While scholars increasingly acknowledge that most contemporary international medical travel comprises South–South flows, these have gone curiously unexamined. Rather, policy, scholarly and media attention focuses predominantly on North–South flows of ‘medical tourists’. However, this focus diverts attention from the actual and potential impacts of South–South intra-regional medical travel flows on both their source and receiving contexts. As such, we present findings from a study examining South–South intra-regional medical travellers' motivations, preparations and practices to better understand the social, economic and political situations that condition them and their effects on the destinations that receive them. Our study of Indonesian medical travellers pursuing health care in Malaysia draws on 35 semi-structured interviews with Indonesian patients, their companions, medical staff and agents in both countries. From this, we suggest that South–South medical travellers' diverse socio-economic conditions shape decision-making and spending behaviour relative to treatment, accommodation and transport choices as well as length of stay. We identify ways in which informal economies and social care networks sustain the formal medical travel industry. Finally, we observe how medical travel increasingly serves as a means through which chronic and everyday health needs are met through temporary, visa-free intra-regional movement.

Abstract:Background: As a growing industry, medical tourism includes many economic opportunities. This industry is the largest and most diverse industry in the world, with a foreign currency income which is equal to the automotive and military weapons industries. The aim of the current research is to identify and prioritize economic opportunities related to medical tourism management, using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a multi-criteria decision-making tool. Methods: This was a descriptive-survey research with an applied and cross-sectional approach. A survey method was used to collect data, so this study can be classified as field research. The statistical population of the research included 25 people with experience and expertise selected through purposive sampling in the fields of management, tourism, and medicine. The method of collecting data was in the form of library and field studies. The tool for collecting data was a questionnaire of paired comparisons and a check sheet. Data analysis was done with AHP method and Expert Choice 11 software. After collecting the paired comparison questionnaire and calculating the geometric mean, the inconsistency rate of the questionnaires was less than 0.1, which showed that the data had the required validity. Results: First, using library studies, economic opportunities related to medical tourism were identified. These opportunities included cash generation, technological advancements, job creation, diversification of tourism industry, development of health care infrastructure, knowledge transfer and cooperation, services and ancillary industries, and regional development and diversification of economic activity. Opportunities were prioritized using the AHP method. Cash generation with relative importance of 0.191 was ranked first, job creation with relative importance of 0.162 was second, and technological advances was ranked third with relative importance of 0.131. Diversification to economic activities with a relative importance of 0.45 was ranked ninth which was the lowest. Conclusion: Strategic marketing, delivering quality healthcare services, competitive pricing, specialized medical care, patient-centered experience, collaboration and partnership, continuous improvement, and strengthening medical tourism infrastructure are the pillars through which medical tourism management can not only generate sustainable revenue but also provide invaluable healthcare services to patients from across the globe.
Unveiling the Drivers of Chinese Tourists' Visit Intentions Regarding Malaysia

Abstract:In 2023, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Malaysia had not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels, unlike those from some regions where tourism numbers have normalized. The lack of established research methodologies complicates the determination of whether negative news reports contribute to reduced visit intentions among these tourists. Through semi-structured interviews with a total of 69 individuals, including tourists who have visited, those who planned to visit but canceled, and local industry professionals, and using thematic analysis, this study identified ten primary factors diminishing Chinese tourists' visit intentions regarding Malaysia. Notably, the findings suggest that the main reasons are not primarily associated with negative media coverage. The research indicates that improvements in multilingual services, targeted marketing strategies, effective use of Chinese social media platforms, promotion of local culture, addressing inaccuracies in religious and cultural guidance, and reducing regional disparities in infrastructure could enhance the visit intentions of Chinese tourists regarding Malaysia. This study not only offers a comprehensive framework for understanding the factors influencing visitation intentions but also provides an effective methodology for assessing the impact of unforeseen events on tourist behavior. It further proposes practical strategies to enhance the recovery of tourist arrivals.

Determinants of Bangladeshi patients' decision-making process and satisfaction toward medical tourism in India

Abstract:Objectives: The aims are to explore the factors influencing Bangladeshi patients' decision-making process and their satisfaction level toward medical tourism in India. Methods: The study used a quantitative research approach with a cross-sectional survey. Data were collected from the patients or their relatives (N = 388) who would have decided to travel to India for medical and treatment purposes at the Chittagong Indian visa center (IVAC). Data were collected using a structured, pre-tested, and facilitator-administered questionnaire, which mainly included the social demographic characteristics, health status, medical tourism information and medical tourism index. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to explore the factors influencing their satisfaction level toward medical tourism in India. Results: More than three-fourths of the participants had visited India for self-treatment. Of the participants, 14% were cardiology patients, and 13% suffered from cancer. The relatives were the key source of information regarding medical tourism for more than one-fourth of the respondents. India's availability of well-experienced doctors, hospital/medical facilities with high standards, well-trained doctors, reputable doctors, and quality treatments and medical materials were top-ranked items. Regression results depict that facility and services appeared as the strongest factor (β = 0.24, t = 4.71, p < 0.001) followed by tourism destination factor (β = 0.16, t = 3.11, p = 0.002), medical tourism costs factor (β = 0.16, t = 3.24, p = 0.001) and country environment factor (β = 0.15, t = 2.69, p = 0.007). Conclusions: We found that the factor related to facility and services is one of the strongest predictors in our models. Therefore, home countries must strengthen the health care providers' advanced professional training, including service attitudes. Moreover, it is important to lessen the language barrier, reduce the airfare for medical tourists, and make the treatment cost more affordable for patients.

Abstract:Purpose- The purpose of this paper is to analyse the influence of Trip Attributes on Patient Satisfaction and Patient Loyalty in Medical Tourism Sector using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). Design/ method/ approach- The paper undertakes an examination of influence of Trip Attributes on Patient Satisfaction and Patient Loyalty in Medical Tourism Sector based on primary data collected from 402 foreign tourists visiting Kerala for medical treatment using questionnaire. The Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) using Smart PLS 3.0 developed by Christian Ringle and his team was employed for analysing data. Findings- The results indicate that Trip Attributes including Frequency of Visit, Duration of Treatment and Duration of Leisure Time have significant influence on Patient Satisfaction. Likewise, the patient satisfaction has significant influence on Patient Loyalty. The results highlight the importance of trip attributes on patient satisfaction and their loyalty in the medical tourism sector. The government and service providers can develop the medical tourism industry by concentrating on trip attributes as it has direct effect on patient satisfaction.

Abstract:The congenital scoliosis is a deformity of the spine in the frontal plane caused by abnormal development of the vertebral bodies during the first 6 weeks of fetal life. More than 75 percent of all congenital scolioses are progressive. Degree and speed of progression can usually be predetermined by the type and location of the anomaly. Corset treatment is inefficient in the treatment of congenital deformities. Operation is the treatment of choice. Operative techniques are posterior fusions in situ with or without instrumentation and combined anterior and posterior arthrodeses. Since the best results can be expected in an early stage when only few segments have to be fused, operation should be performed as soon as possible. Manifestations of dysrhaphia or tethered cord must be identified prior to surgery. Spur removal or release operation should be performed during the first session.
Investigating tourists' intention toward green hotels in Malaysia: a direction on tourist sustainable consumption

Abstract:International tourists in Malaysia have been playing a significant role in the economy. However, tourists' consumption of natural resources could be a threat to the environment. Green practices in the hotel industry have triggered a great opportunity to save water and energy consumption and maintain sustainable practices in the tourism and hospitality industries. This is a study on international tourists' intention to visit green hotels in Malaysia with related factors such as green availability, green price sensitivity, attitude, and subjective norm. For data collection, the researchers used self-administered questionnaires and distributed them to international tourists in Malaysia. For the analysis, structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was applied for analysis. Results found that green price sensitivity, attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control positively influence tourists' intention to visit green hotels in Malaysia. Attitude also mediated between green price sensitivity and tourists' intention to visit green hotels in Malaysia. This study has shown the novelty by establishing the relationships among variables and contributing to the Theory of Planned Behaviour, which will benefit future researchers. The study posed several recommendations for practitioners as there is a need to maintain appropriate standards of environmentally friendly practices in hotels, and consumers' support for consuming green-related products impacts their survival, growth, and sustainability. It will help hotel managers learn more about their guests and create more effective marketing plans.

Abstract:Tourism is a globalized industry. Health, wellness and medical tourism are recognized as one of the most developed and thriving in the tourism industry. The purpose of this study is to explore the key factors of medical tourism and discuss its relation with tourism attraction and re-visit intention. The results reveal that: (1) The key criteria are doctor’s expertise and reputation, health evaluation, international certified doctors and staffs, the safety of medication quality, quality of medical treatment, high healthcare quality, service orientation of medical staff, advanced medical treatment, availability of medications, on-site pharmacy and prescription assistance, waiting time for medical treatment from time to first contact to real treatment, quality of required treatment, and hospital contact information. (2) The key criteria have a significant positive influence on tourism attraction and re-visit intention. (3) Tourism attraction has no influence on re-visit intention.

Abstract:This current article aims to empirically test the relationship between international tourist knowledge and Malaysian Heritage Food (MHF) cultural involvement on Malaysia's Food Tourism Image and secondly, to analyze the mediating effect of knowledge for both relationships. A quantitative survey of 719 international tourists with previous MHF consumption experience was conducted and analyzed via a Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach. Results demonstrated that the following variables have significant associations with Food Tourism Image while knowledge mediated the subsequent links positively with partial mediation. Regardless of the theoretical and managerial implications and research findings, supplementary investigations are warranted to enhance the growth of food cultural tourism.

This study aims to measure the efficiency of private hospitals following their expansion and venture into the medical tourism industry through extensive governmental support.
