Abstract:In recent years, filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) has recaptured widespread interests for its possible applications in cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access. A distinctive feature for cognitive radio is its adaptivity to environment. When environment changes, a cognitive radio will change its parameters to optimize the transmission and receiving. Thus it is desirable to design a unified structure and algorithm for FBMC that needs little change for different parameters. In this paper, we propose a unified structure and parallel algorithms to implement the FBMC. The FBMC system and parallel algorithms are constructed based on the normalized prototype filter. The coefficients of the normalized prototype filter can be pre-computed and stored. The proposed parallel algorithms have the same structure for various choices of time duration, subcarrier spacing and bandwidth. Combined with known parallel algorithms for the fast Fourier transform (FFT), the proposed algorithms fully parallelize the computations for the transmitter and receiver, which can run much faster than conventional serial algorithms as modern processors usually have massive parallel capability.
Improved DFT-based channel estimation for FBMC/OQAM wireless communication systems

Abstract:Filter bank multi-carrier with offset QAM(FBMC/OQAM) is a multi-carrier modulation technique that can be an alternative to conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) with cyclic prefix (CP) in wireless network. FBMC has a higher spectrum efficiency and effective emission power without CP. Because the orthogonality only exists in real domain, the channel estimation in FBMC/OQAM system is more challenging. In this paper, the IAM preamble-based method and the DFT-based channel estimation are combined to do the estimation. And two improved DFT-based channel estimation methods are proposed to remove the noise in the channel impulse response(CIR) of conventional DFT-based method. The proposed are proved to have a better performance than the conventional DFT-based.

Abstract:FBMC is now a promising technique to achieve high spectral efficiency and strong robustness against dispersive channels. Extensive research has been done on FBMC system but mostly limited to theoretical research. This paper focussed on the prototype design for multiple-input multiple-output filter bank multicarrier communication (MIMO-FBMC) system. A practical testbed design for \(4\times 4\) MIMO-FBMC system with two National Instruments PXIe and four universal software-defined radio reconfigurable input/output (USRP-RIO) devices is presented. Details of system design including synchronization, channel estimation, and bit error rate are considered.

Abstract:Filter bank orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(FB-OFDM) is a promising multicarrier technique due to its ability to significantly reduce out-of–band (OOB) emission. In this letter, a combined application of FB-OFDM and index modulation (IM) (FB-OFDM-IM) is proposed to improve bit error rate (BER) performance. Firstly, the average bit error probability (ABEP) upper bound is derived over multipath fading channel. Then, a low-complexity maximum likelihood (ML) detection method is designed at receiver. Simulation results verify the superiority of FB-OFDM-IM system in terms of BER performance. Furthermore, the proposed detection scheme is proven to be ML-optimal with much lower complexity.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM), which uses the subcarrier indices as a source of information, has attracted considerable interest recently. Motivated by the index modulation (IM) concept, we build a circular convolution filter bank multicarrier with index modulation (C-FBMC-IM) system in this paper. The advantages of the C-FBMC-IM system are investigated by comparing the interference power with the conventional C-FBMC system. As some subcarriers carry nothing but zeros, the minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization bias power will be smaller comparing to the conventional C-FBMC system. As a result, our C-FBMC-IM system outperforms the conventional C-FBMC system. The simulation results demonstrate that both BER and spectral efficiency improvement can be achieved when we apply IM into the C-FBMC system.

Abstract:Digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are widely used in bandwidth-limited visible-light communication (VLC) systems for high spectral-efficiency multi-carrier signal generation. To reduce the implementation complexity of the transmitter, a digital 1-bit low-pass delta-sigma modulation (DSM)-enabled DAC-free filter-bank multi-carrier (FBMC) signal generation scheme is proposed and experimentally investigated in a red light-emitting diode-based VLC system. In this scheme, one field programmable gate array gigabit transceiver in combination with a low-pass filter is employed to realize the 609 MHz baseband FBMC signal generation. Besides, a low-complexity fast Walsh-Hadamard transform (FWHT)-based interleaved block precoding (IBP) technique is also proposed to reduce peak-to-average power ratio and achieve a uniform signal-to-noise ratio profile, and then improve the bit error rate (BER) performance. The experimental results exhibit that the net data rate of 2.38-Gbits 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation-encoded FBMC signal, generated by the proposed scheme, can transmit 2.3-m free space with the BER less than 3.810-3. With the help of the FWHT-IBP technique, about 2-dB improvement in receiver sensitivity is achieved. In addition, the proposed scheme can provide a slight improvement in the BER performance, compared to the conventional DAC-based FBMC-VLC.

Abstract:As an alternative to OFDM systems with Cyclic Prefix (CP), filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) transmission technique leads to an enhanced physical layer conventional communication network and it is an enabling technology for the new concepts and, particularly, cognitive radio. Due to the feature of good time-frequency localization, there is no need for FBMC systems adding any guard interval, definitely leading to higher spectral efficiency compared with CP-OFDM. FBMC has the potential to fulfill the requirements of the new concepts, but a major research effort is necessary for full exploitation and optimization in all aspects of the radio context. In this paper, a testbench based on National Instrument universal software radio peripheral has been developed for FBMC systems. Meanwhile, systematic performances, including synchronization, channel estimation and bit error rate are evaluated.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) has attracted considerable interest recently. The technique uses the subcarrier indices as a source of information. In filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) system, double-dispersive channels lead to inter-carrier interference and/or inter-symbol interference, which are caused by the neighbouring symbols in the frequency and/or time domain. When the authors introduce index modulation to the FBMC system, the interference power will be smaller comparing with that of the conventional FBMC system as some subcarriers carry nothing but zeros. In this study, the advantages of FBMC with index modulation (FBMC-IM) are investigated by comparing the signal to interference ratio with that of the conventional FBMC system. However, the bit error rate (BER) performance is affected since there exists interference in the FBMC-IM system. To improve the BER performance, the authors propose an optimal combination-selection algorithm and an optimal combination-mapping rule. By abandoning some combinations whose error probability are larger and by mapping the remaining combinations into specified bits, a better BER performance can be achieved compared with that without optimisation. The theoretical analysis and simulation results clearly show the FBMC-IM system has a good BER performance under double-dispersive channels.

Abstract:In cognitive radio techniques, OFDM is usually regarded as the physical layer candidate. However, the weaknesses of the OFDM technique, i.e., using plain FFT for spectral analysis, decreased bandwidth efficiency due to CP (cyclic prefix), high out-of-band emission, have been pointed out and the introduction of filter banks based multicarrier (FBMC) system has been advocated by a number of authors. In this paper, we propose an efficient FBMC system for cognitive radio network. At the transmitter, we propose a decimation transform decomposition method to eliminate the unnecessary zero operations. At the receiver, we utilize the analysis filter banks to sense the spectrum bands. In order to conquer the shortages of the traditional filter banks, we propose a multistage analysis filter banks, which can reduce the computational complexity while improve the detection precision when used to sense the spectrum bands. And with an adaptive threshold scheme in the power estimator, the threshold can be kept very close to the noise power, which can increase the detection probability especially in the condition of low SNR.

Abstract:Filter bank multi-carrier (FBMC) offers superior spectral properties compared to cyclic-prefix orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CP-OFDM), at the cost of an inherent shortcoming in dispersive channels called intrinsic imaginary interference. In this paper we propose a new FBMC based communication system using two orthogonal polarizations for wireless communication systems: dual-polarization FBMC (DP-FBMC). Using this system we can significantly suppress the FBMC intrinsic interference. Therefore in DP-FBMC all the multicarrier techniques used in CP-OFDM systems such as channel equalization, etc., should be applicable without using the complex processing methods required for conventional FBMC. DP-FBMC also has other interesting advantages over CP-OFDM and FBMC: it is more robust in highly dispersive channels, and also to receiver carrier frequency offset (CFO) and timing offset (TO). In our DP-FBMC system we propose three different structures based on different multiplexing techniques. We show that compared to conventional FBMC, one of these DP-FBMC structures has equivalent complexity and equipment requirements. We compare DP-FBMC with other systems through simulations. According to our results DP-FBMC has potential as a promising candidate for future wireless communication networks.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM), which uses the subcarrier indices as a source of information, has attracted considerable interest recently. When the index modulation (IM) technique is applied to filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) system, the intrinsic interferences are partly eliminated but the remaining interferences still affect the bit error rate (BER) performance. In this paper, the dominant factors that have influence on the BER performance of the FBMC with IM (FBMC-IM) system are investigated. Then we propose a combination-selection algorithm to reduce the impact of these factors by considering the largest average Hamming distance (HD) principle and the fewest bad combinations principle. The theoretical analysis and simulation results clearly show the BER improvement when we select the optimal combinations.

Abstract:Filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) systems based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM), namely FBMC-OQAM, have been criticized for their inefficiency in the use of spectral resources, because of the long ramp-up and ramp-down tails at the beginning and the end of each data packet, respectively. We propose a novel method for shortening these tails. By appending a set of virtual (i.e., none data carrying) symbols to the beginning and the end of each packet, and clever selection of these symbols, we show that the ramp-up and ramp-down tails in the FBMC-OQAM can be suppressed to the extent that they are deemed negligible and thus may be ignored. This shortens the length of signal burst in each FBMC-OQAM packet and improves its spectral efficiency, viz., the same data is transmitted over a shorter period of time. We develop an optimization method that allows computation of virtual symbols for each data packet. Simulation results show that, compared with the existing methods, the proposed tail-shortening approach leads to superior out-of-band emissions performance and a much lower error vector magnitude for the demodulated symbols.

Abstract:In this paper, the channel estimation related issues in FBMC systems are discussed. A single-symbol preamble structure is proposed and the corresponding channel estimation methods are provided for filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) systems. The simulation results show that compared with the existing methods, the proposed scheme achieves impressive performance gains (up to 4.0dB) with much smaller preamble resource overhead. This is obtained through effective channel filtering for the intrinsic imaginary interference and additive noise exploiting the sparse property of the channel response in delay domain. With the proposed solution, the FBMC system can even save half resources for pilots compared with OFDM systems.

Abstract:In this work, an efficient precoding design scheme is proposed for downlink cell-free distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (DM-MIMO) filter bank multi-carrier (FBMC) systems with asynchronous reception and highly frequency selectivity. The proposed scheme includes a multiple interpolation structure to eliminate the impact of response difference we recently discovered, which has better performance in highly frequency-selective channels. Besides, we also consider the phase shift in asynchronous reception and introduce a phase compensation in the design process. The phase compensation also benefits from the multiple interpolation structure and better adapts to asynchronous reception. Based on the proposed scheme, we theoretically analyze its ergodic achievable rate performance and derive a closed-form expression. Simulation results show that the derived expression can accurately characterize the rate performance, and FBMC with the proposed scheme outperforms orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) in the asynchronous scenario.

Abstract:In underwater acoustic communication (UWA), there is a significant presence of multipath and Doppler spread. The integration of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with index modulation (IM), utilizing subcarrier index modulation to enhance system performance underwater, has garnered considerable interest from researchers. Multiple mode modulation can enhance utilization by transmitting symbols of different modes on different subcarriers. Inspired by the concepts of index modulation and multiple mode modulation, this paper proposes a method that combines multiple mode indexing with the filter bank multicarrier system (MM-FBMC-IM), enabling the transmission of different modulation orders on each subcarrier to increase system flexibility. Simulations demonstrate that under the same spectral efficiency, multiple mode indexing FBMC offers superior bit error rate (BER) performance compared to conventional FBMC and index modulation FBMC.

Abstract:Filter bank multicarrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) is considered as a powerful supplementary waveform for future wireless communications. However, FBMC systems have the same high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem as other multi-carrier systems, and the PAPR reduction methods designed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems cannot be directly applied to FBMC systems due to the unique overlapping structure of FBMC signals. Therefore, some PAPR suppression schemes tailored to FBMC systems have been proposed, but their computational complexity is prohibitively high for some practical applications. In this paper, we propose a conversion vector-based low-complexity dispersive selection mapping (DSLM) scheme, called the C-DSLM scheme, to reduce the PAPR of FBMC signals. In the C-DSLM scheme, a series of conversion vectors is first carefully designed for FBMC signals with overlapping structures, and then candidate signals are generated by multiplying the original signal by the cyclic shift of the conversion vectors with only a few nonzero elements. The complexity evaluation and simulation results show that the C-DSLM scheme's PAPR suppression performance is similar to that of the DSLM scheme with computational complexity is only approximately 10% of that of the DSLM scheme. Our proposed C-DSLM scheme is highly efficient and strongly applicable.

Abstract:Filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) modulation has many nice features compared with conventional cyclic prefix-based orthogonal frequency multiplexing (CP-OFDM) and has been considered as a promising waveform candidate for future 5G wireless communication. Combining FBMC with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology may achieve high data rate. In this paper, we propose the K-Best algorithm based uncoded and coded iterative detectors for MIMO-FBMC systems to approach near maximum-likelihood (ML) performance with low computational complexity. The proposed coded detector is capable of supporting soft-outputs, we can concatenate it with soft-input code, such as the LDPC code, to achieve additional performance gain. Meanwhile, we propose interference cancellation method to eliminate the intrinsic interference in the MIMO-FBMC system. Simulation results prove that the proposed detectors achieve approximate ML performance with moderate complexity.

Abstract:Filter Bank Multi-Carrier (FBMC) system based on offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (offset-QAM) combined with Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) technique faces great challenges. The inherent imaginary interference of FBMC seriously impacts the performance of the Maximum Likelihood (ML) detection technique in MIMO transmission. The application of the Alamouti code is also hindered. In this paper, we present a data-compressed transmission method based on non-sinusoidal orthogonal transformation, which can recover the bi-orthogonality of FBMC and eliminate the imaginary interference. Thereby, the combination of FBMC and MIMO as well as the application of ML technique and Alamouti code are realized. Specifically, we first consider the Walsh transform, which belongs to the non-sinusoidal orthogonal transform, and utilize its property that can reduce the transmission bandwidth to recover the orthogonality of the FBMC in the frequency domain. Secondly, we construct the discrete transmission model of the system and generate the orthogonal compression matrix utilizing the fast Walsh transform. Then, we analyze the multi-frame transmission, calculate the frames interference, and improve the signal-to-interference ratio again by adding guard time slots. Finally, we construct the MIMO transmission model and complete the theoretical analysis. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has a robust MIMO transmission performance. ML and Alamouti code techniques perform the same as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex in bi-orthogonal FBMC.
