Abstract:Using the density functional theory and generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation potential, we have performed an extensive search to obtain the ground state geometries of both neutral and anionic Au(16) cluster by considering over 200 low lying isomers. For the neutral Au(16) cluster we found a new T(d) compact structure to be the lowest energy configuration, which is nearly degenerate in total energy with the previously reported C(s) and C(2v) noncage structures. While the Au(16) (-) cluster, in agreement with previous calculations, is found to have a T(d) hollow cage structure, an isomer with a planar structure is found to be lower in energy. The photoelectron spectra from all the nine lowest energy isomers are calculated and compared with experiment to determine the possibility of their existence. Molecular dynamics simulations on both neutral and anionic Au(16) clusters are carried out to provide further insight into the origin and stability of these structures. Our comprehensive study allows us to answer the following questions: (1) Why are the adiabatic and vertical detachment energies of Au(16) cluster nearly identical when the lowest energy structures of the anion and the neutral are so very different? (2) How is Au(16) (-) formed? Is it born neutral and the extra electron attaches afterwards or is it born anionic and the structure evolves during the electron attachment process?

Abstract:Aurophilic interaction plays a very important role in gold-related clusters. Here, we investigate the Au n Cl n+1 - (n = 1-7) cluster ions using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry in combination with theoretical calculations. Three cluster ions of Au2Cl3 -, Au3Cl4 -, and Au4Cl5 - show their remarkable intensities in the mass spectrum. Geometric structure optimizations for Au n Cl n+1 - (n = 1-7) were performed on the MP2 level. The results show that the most stable structures of Au n Cl n+1 - (n = 2-7) are all characterized by a zigzag structure. Furthermore, it can be found that the aurophilic interactions containing terminal gold atoms strengthen with the increase of total gold atoms and progressively stabilize for large clusters of Au6Cl7 - and Au7Cl8 -, whereas the aurophilic interactions between nonterminal adjacent gold atoms stabilize at n = 5.

Abstract:Revealing the stability and structural patterns is important for precisely synthesizing or assembling ligand protected nanoclusters, and even their applications as functional nanomaterials. Investigations on structural evolutional patterns and structural stability are very challenging, because structures change with the nanocluster size and the structural stability depends on both the electron structures of cores and ligand type. Herein, we propose a hybrid superatom network (hSAN) model to understand the stability of some gold nanoclusters with different kinds of ligands. In this model, 4c-2e superatom Au-4 can form conjugated superatom networks by vertex sharing, and ligands further connect the conjugated superatom networks together to form a bigger complex network, i.e. a hSAN. The stability of the clusters, including [Au-24(Cu CPh)(14)(PPh3)(4)](2+), Au-28(S-c-C6H11)(20), Au-36(SCH2Ph-tBu)(8)Cl-20, Au-40(O-MBT)(24) and Au-52(TBBT)(32) can be explained uniformly by the hSAN model. Beyond that, a new heuristic structural pattern named the Au-13 topological rule is proposed. In the light of this heuristic rule, every Au-7 bi-tetrahedral kernel is included in an Au-13 structure with quasi-O-h symmetry, i.e. as long as the Au-7 bi-tetrahedral kernel is formed, it will be surrounded by six Au atoms to form an Au-13 structure topologically. According to this understanding, a new nanocluster [Au-44(Cu=CH3)(26)(PCH3)(4)](2+) and a new nanowire with the structural evolutional formula [Au((20n+4))(Cu CH3)((12n+2))(PCH3)(4)](2+) (n = 1, 2, 3, 4,.) are predicted. Both the understanding of the stability and the structure rule are free from the type of ligand, and will be useful for the structural predictions and determinations of ligand protected gold nanoclusters.

Abstract:In metallic nanoparticles, the cluster geometric structures control the particle's electronic band structure, polarizability, and catalytic properties. Analyzing the structural properties is a complex problem; the structure of an assembled cluster changes from moment to moment due to thermal fluctuations. Conventional structural analyses based on spectroscopy or diffraction cannot determine the instantaneous structure exactly and can merely provide an averaged structure. Molecular simulations offer an opportunity to examine the assembly and evolution of metallic clusters, as the preferred assemblies and conformations can easily be visualized and explored. Here, we utilize the adaptive biasing force algorithm applied to first principles molecular dynamics to demonstrate exploration of a relatively simple system which permits comprehensive study of the small metal cluster $\ce{Au4}$ in both neutral and charged configurations. Our simulation work offers a quantitative understanding of these clusters' dynamic structure, which is significant for single-site catalytic reactions on metal clusters and provides a starting point for a detailed quantitative understanding of more complex pure metal and alloy clusters' dynamic properties.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of the clusters Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)CH3](2)Cl-2 (1) and Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)-CH3](4) (2) are described. These mixed-ligand, sub-nanometer clusters, prepared via exchange of dodecanethiol onto phosphine-halide gold clusters, show enhanced stability relative to the parent. The characterization of these clusters features the precise determination of the number of gold atoms in the cluster cores using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, allowing the assignment of 13 gold atoms (+/- 3 atoms) to the composition of both cluster molecules. Electrochemical and optical measurements reveal discrete molecular orbital levels and apparent energy gaps of 1.6-1.7 eV for the two cluster molecules. The electrochemical measurements further indicate that the Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)CH3](2)Cl-2 cluster undergoes an overall two-electron reduction. The electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of the two Au-13 cluster molecules are compared with those of a secondary synthetic product, which proved to be larger Au thiolate-derivatized monolayer-protected clusters with an average core of Au-180. The latter shows behavior fully consistent with the adoption of metallic-like properties.
Au-34(-): A Fluxional Core-Shell Cluster

Abstract:Among the large Au-n(-) clusters for n > 20, the photoelectron spectra of Au-34(-) exhibit the largest energy gap (0.94 eV) with well-resolved spectral features, making it a good candidate for structural consideration in conjunction with theoretical studies. Extensive structural searches at several levels of density functional and ab initio theory revealed that the low-lying isomers of Au-34(-) can be characterized as fluxional core-shell type structures with 4 or 3 inner atoms and 30 or 31 outer atoms, i.e., Au-4@Au-30(-) and Au-3@Au-31(-), respectively. Detailed comparisons between theoretical and photoelectron results suggest that the most probable ground state structures of Au-34(-) are of the Au-4@Au-30(-) type. The 30 outer atoms seem to be disordered or fluxional, giving rise to a number of low-lying isomers with very close energies and simulated photoelectron spectra. The fluxional nature of the outer layer in large gold clusters or nanoparticles may have important implications for their remarkable catalytic activities.

Abstract:All six virus which had beern isolated from the feces of apparently healthy cattle weretested for properties after serial passages. Then growth curves were drawn for them, includingtwo prototype viruses, in cells of bovine kidney, chick embryo, HeLa, PS (cell line isolatedfrom swine kidney), and TC (cell line isolated from chick embryo).I) All strains proliferated xxziLh cytopathogenic effect irr cultures of bovine kidney andPS cells. They were divided ixnto txxzo groups in cultures of HeLa cells. One group, including the K62 and K90 strains, grew with cytopathogenic effect and the other groupshovved neitlner virus multiplication nor cytopathogenic effect in HeLa cells. The K62, K88, K90, and K130 strains exhibited virus growth in TC cells, where the K136 and K145strains did not proliferate.2) 1-Iernagglutinating activity was changed in the serial passages in the cells used withbovine enteroviruses. Fluids of tissue cultures of the K62 and K90 strains in HeLa cellsand the K130 strain in TC cells failed to produce hernaggltatinating activities with two orthree passages. The K136 strain in PS cells and the K145 strain irn chick embryo cells, however, produced hemagglutinating activities with two or three passages. The K130 strainproduced no clear-cut hemagglutination by successive passages in chick embryo cells. Abstract:The configuration, stability, evolution, and electronic properties of neutral and cationic [AuGe n ] λ and [Ge n +1]λ (n=1−13, λ=0, +1) nanoalloy clusters have been systematically investigated by using unbiased global search technique married with double-density functional strategy. The results reveal that although the neutral and cationic global minimal structures of gold-doped germanium clusters differ from each other when n=4, and 6–13, the evolution patterns are consistent. Attaching structures have been changed to Au-encapsulated motif at the turning point of n=11. The analyses of electronic structure and binding energy indicate that doping of an Au atom may decrease the stability of neutral Ge nanoclusters, but can enhance the stability of cationic Ge nanoclusters. The analyses of electronic property show that ionization potentials (IP) of Ge n +1 cluster are larger than those of AuGe n nanoalloy clusters, indicating that doping of an Au atom can decrease the ionization potential of neutral Ge nanoclusters. The analyses of HOMO and LUMO energy reveal that HOMO-LUMO gaps of neutral AuGe n (n=1−13) with the exception of n=2 and 3 are smaller than that of Ge n +1 clusters. For cations, the HOMO-LUMO gaps of [AuGe n ]+ are wider than that of [Ge n +1]+ cluster when n=2, 5–7, and 9–11, narrower when n=3, 4, 8 and 13, and nearly identical when n=1 and 12. The PBE-DFT based global descriptors viz. Electronegativity, Hardness, Softness and Electrophilicity Index of [Ge n +1] λ and [AuGe n ] λ (λ=0, +1; n=1−13) nanoclusters are estimated by means of HOMO-LUMO gap. And they possess highly correlation with HOMO-LUMO gap. The agreement between theoretical and experimental results such as IP, binding energy, HOMO-LUMO gap, and bond distance demonstrate the success of the computational analyses in this work.

Abstract:Total structure determination of a ligand-protected gold nanocluster, Au144 , has been successfully carried out. The composition of title nanocluster is Au144 (C≡CAr)60 (1; Ar=2-FC6 H4 -). The cluster 1 exhibits a quasi-spherical Russian doll-like architecture, comprising a Au54 two-shelled Mackay icosahedron (Au12 @Au42 ), which is further enclosed by a Au60 anti-Mackay icosahedral shell. The Au114 kernel is enwrapped by thirty linear ArC≡C-Au-C≡CAr staple motifs. The absorption spectrum of 1 shows two bands at 560 and 620 nm. This spectrum is distinctly different from that of thiolated Au144 , which was predicted to have an almost identical metal kernel and very similar ligands arrangement in 1. These facts indicate the molecule-like behavior of 1 and significant involvement of ligands in the electronic structure of 1. The cluster 1 is hitherto the largest coinage metal nanocluster with atomically precise molecular structure in the alkynyl family. The work not only addresses the concern of structural information of Au144 , which had been long-pursued, but also provides an interesting example showing ligand effects on the optical properties of ligand protected metal nanoclusters.

Abstract:Photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that a 20-atom gold cluster has an extremely large energy gap, which is even greater than that of C-60, and an electron affinity comparable with that of C-60. This observation suggests that the AU(20) cluster should be highly stable and chemically inert. Using relativistic density functional calculations, we found that AU(20) possesses a tetrahedral structure, which is a fragment of the face-centered cubic lattice of bulk gold with a small structural relaxation. AU(20) is thus a unique molecule with atomic packing similar to that of bulk gold but with very different properties.

Abstract:An all-electron scalar relativistic calculation onAu n Pt (n = 1−12) clusters has beenperformed by using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximationat PW91 level. Our results reveal that all the lowest energy geometries ofAu n Pt (n = 1−12) clusters may begenerated by substituting Pt atom for one gold atom of theAu n+1 cluster at the highest coordinated site. Compared withcorresponding pure Au n+1 cluster, the lowest energy geometriesof Au n Pt clusters are distorted slightly and still keep theplanar structures due to the strong scalar relativistic effect in small gold cluster. TheAu-Pt bonds are stronger and most Au-Au bonds far from Pt atom are weaker than thecorresponding Au-Au bonds in pure Au n+1 cluster. Bysubstituting Pt atom for one gold atom of Au n+1 cluster at thehighest coordinated site, the relatively stable and inactive odd-numberedAu n+1 cluster becomes the relatively unstable and reactiveodd-numbered Au n Pt cluster, and the relatively unstable andreactive even-numbered Au n+1 cluster becomes the relativelystable and inactive even-numbered Au n Pt cluster chemicallyand electronically. All the Au n Pt clusters prefer low spinmultiplicity. The even-numbered Au n Pt clusters are found toexhibit zero magnetic moment and the odd-numberedAu n Pt clusters are found to possess magnetic moment with thevalue of 1 μ B. The odd-even alterations of magnetic momentsand electronic configurations for Au n Pt clusters are veryobvious and may be simply understood in terms of the electron pairing effect.

Abstract:Gold compounds, clusters, and nanoparticles are widely used as catalysts and therapeutic medicines; the interactions between gold and its ligands in these systems play important roles in their chemical properties and functionalities. In order to elucidate the nature of the chemical interactions between Au(I) and its ligands, herein we use several theoretical methods to study the chemical bonding in a variety of linear [AuX2](-) complexes, where X = halogen atoms (F, Cl, Br, I, At and Uus), H, OH, SH, OCH3, SCH3, CN and SCN. It is shown that the most important bonding orbitals in these systems have significant contributions from the Au sd hybridized atomic orbitals. The ubiquitous linear or quasi-linear structures of [AuX2](-) are attributed to the well-balanced optimal overlap in both s and p bonding orbitals and minimal repulsion between the two negatively charged ligands. The stability of these complexes is related to the covalency of the Au-X bond and a periodic trend is found in the evolution of covalency along the halogen group ligands. The special stability of [Au(CN)(2)](-) is a result of strong covalent and ionic interactions. For the superheavy element Uus, the covalency of Au-Uus is enhanced through the spin-orbit interactions.

Combining Theory and Experiment to Characterize the Atomic Structures of Surface-Deposited Au(309) Clusters

Abstract:Gold clusters with icosabedral, decahedral, and cuboctahedral shell structures, have been studied using the Gupta many-body potential, to aid in the structural characterization of surface-deposited AU309 clusters using high-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). In this size regime, the calculations indicate that the icosahedral geometries are lower in energy than the decahedral and cuboctahedral structures but that the energy differences are small. This is consistent with the spread of different geometries observed by HAADF-STEM. Analysis of the different outlines and intensity profies of the HAADFSTEM images indicate that there are roughly equal numbers of decahedral and cuboctahedral clusters on the surface. The unambiguous assignment of icosahedral geometries is more difficult because of the more-spherical nature of these nanoparticles. Because the experimental uncertainty in the deposited cluster size is 5%, a genetic algorithm has been used to search for the lowest energy isomers for AUN, clusters with N = 309 15 atoms. A variety of highly faceted structures have been found, many corresponding to incomplete or distorted icosahedra, including a puckered icosahedral geometry for N = 309.

Abstract:The geometric and electronic properties of small two-dimensional (2D) Au-N (N=2-20) clusters are studied using the density-functional method. The lowest-energy geometries of a closed-packed nature are selected for 2D Au-2- Au-8 clusters. A clear odd-even oscillation is found for the stability and energy gaps of Au-N clusters with Nless than or equal to15. The polarizabilities of the 2D clusters are calculated and found to be strongly anisotropic. In the normal direction of a 2D cluster, the polarizability is smaller than that of bulk Si, indicating a nonmetallic character. A fitting formula is proposed to estimate the polarizability of a 2D Au cluster with arbitrary size and shape in the normal direction. The behavior of a 2D Au cluster in a strong electric field is also discussed.
