Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy plus topical 0.05% cyclosporine A (CsA) eye drops to treat Sjogren's Syndrome-related dry eyes (SS-DE). Research design and methods: In this prospective, randomized trial included, 60 individuals with SS-DE symptoms were randomized to receive topical eye drops containing either 0.1% sodium hyaluronate (Group S) or 0.05% CsA (Group C) plus IPL therapy. Before the first treatment (baseline), and at 12, 16, and 20 weeks after treatment commencement, we assessed the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score, the Schirmer I test (SIT), noninvasive tear breakup time (NBUT), corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), meibomian gland (MG) dropout, lid margin abnormality, MG expressibility, and meibum quality. Results: Both groups showed significant improvements in the OSDI, NBUT, CFS, MG expressibility, and meibum quality (all p < 0.05). Group C showed a greater increase in OSDI, NBUT, MG expressibility, and meibum quality (all p < 0.05). Moreover, SIT and lid margin abnormalities significantly improved in Group C (both p < 0.05), but not in Group S. Conclusion: Treatment with 0.05% CsA eyedrops plus IPL therapy could significantly reduce the issues and physical discomfort of patients with SS-DE.
Changes of Corneal Wavefront Aberrations in Dry Eye Patients after Treatment with Artificial Lubricant Drops

Abstract:Purpose.To evaluate the corneal aberration changes in dry eye patients after treatment with artificial eye drops.Methods.Thirty mild to moderate dry eye patients treated with artificial eye drops and twenty comparable dry eye patients were recruited as controls. Anterior corneal aberrations over 3 mm and 5 mm analytical zones including total, 3rd to 5th high order aberrations (HOAs), spherical aberration (SA), and vertical (V-coma) and horizontal coma (H-coma) obtained from corneal topography data at baseline and 2 weeks after treatment were evaluated.Results.For 3 mm zone, trefoils, V-coma, H-coma terms, and 3rd and 5th HOAs were significantly decreased (p<0.05) in the treatment group. For 5 mm zone, instillation of eye drops reduced H-coma, SA terms, 3rd to 5th orders, and total HOAs all showed a significant decrease (p<0.05). The root mean square analysis of the Zernike terms also showed similar statistical results. For control group, all individual terms and total HOAs did not have significant changes over 3 mm and 5 mm zones (p>0.05).Conclusions.Treatment with artificial eye drops can effectively improve the corneal optical quality of dry eye patients by ameliorating the HOAs of anterior corneal surface.
Macroscopic Model for Head-On Binary Droplet Collisions in a Gaseous Medium.

Abstract:In this Letter, coalescence-bouncing transitions of head-on binary droplet collisions are predicted by a novel macroscopic model based entirely on fundamental laws of physics. By making use of the lubrication theory of Zhang and Law [Phys. Fluids 23, 042102 (2011)], we have modified the Navier-Stokes equations to accurately account for the rarefied nature of the interdroplet gas film. Through the disjoint pressure model, we have incorporated the intermolecular van der Waals forces. Our model does not use any adjustable (empirical) parameters. It therefore encompasses an extreme range of length scales (more than 5 orders of magnitude): from those of the external flow in excess of the droplet size (a few hundred μm) to the effective range of the van der Waals force around 10 nm. A state of the art moving adaptive mesh method, capable of resolving all the relevant length scales, has been employed. Our numerical simulations are able to capture the coalescence-bouncing and bouncing-coalescence transitions that are observed as the collision intensity increases. The predicted transition Weber numbers for tetradecane and water droplet collisions at different pressures show good agreement with published experimental values. Our study also sheds new light on the roles of gas density, droplet size, and mean free path in the rupture of the gas film.
Corneal Subbasal Nerve Analysis Using In Vivo Confocal Microscopy in Patients With Dry Eye: Analysis and Clinical Correlations.

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to observe corneal subbasal nerves and Langerhans cells (LCs) using in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) in patients with dry eye, a tool for the evaluation of disease stage and severity and for treatment monitoring at the microstructural level. Methods: A total of 107 eyes from 62 patients were included. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire and other examinations were used to assess dry eye symptoms and signs. IVCM was performed to observe subbasal corneal nerves and LCs. Corneal nerves were graded using both objective and subjective methods. The correlations between dry eye symptoms and corneal nerve parameters, corneal nerve grading, and LC number were analyzed. Results: Corneal nerve length was negatively correlated with sensitivity to light [correlation coefficient (CC)= -0.24, P < 0.05]; nerve width was positively correlated with the OSDI score, painful eyes, and blurred vision (CC = 0.41, 0.23, and 0.46, respectively, all P < 0.05); and nerve tortuosity was positively correlated with sensitivity to light (CC = 0.23, P < 0.05). Moreover, both total objective and subjective grading scores were positively correlated with OSDI scores (CC = 0.48 and 0.27, respectively, both P < 0.05). LC number was found not to be significantly correlated with dry eye symptoms (P > 0.05). Conclusions: IVCM is a useful tool to evaluate corneal subbasal nerve changes in patients with dry eye. Detailed nerve grading could help to understand and evaluate the pathophysiologic conditions of the disease and could be used for further treatment follow-up in the future.
A Clinical Study of the Efficacy of Topical Corticosteroids on Dry Eye

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of topical corticosteroid for treatment of moderate or severe dry eye. Methods: Sixty eyes of 30 patients with moderate or severe dry eye, who were not sensitive to artificial tears, were treated with 0.1% fluorometholone eye drops. Subjective symptom and objective tests were used to evaluate the efficacy of treatment before and after application of 0.1% fluorometholone eye drops for 1 week and 1 month. Side effects were also evaluated. Results: After 1 week of treatment, subjective symptoms were improved in all dry eye patients; objective tests were improved in all dry eye patients 1 month after treatment, and the difference was significant. Conclusion: Topical corticosteroid drops can rapidly and effectively relieve the symptoms and signs of moderate or severe dry eye.
Multimodal Approach in Dry Eye Disease Combining In Vivo Confocal Microscopy and HLA-DR Expression

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the association between corneal images provided by in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) with clinical parameters and conjunctival expression of HLA-DR antigen in patients with dry eye disease (DED). Methods: Two hundred fourteen eyes of 214 patients with DED were analyzed, consisting of 2 groups of patients - 63 with autoimmune dry eye disease (AIDED) and 151 with non-autoimmune dry eye disease (NAIDED). Patients underwent a full clinical examination, including symptom screening, using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, and objective analysis of DED signs by Schirmer's testing, tear break-up time (TBUT), Oxford's test, and IVCM corneal imaging. The IVCM scoring criteria were based on corneal sub-basal nerve density (ND), nerve morphology (NM), and inflammatory cell (IC) density. Quantification of conjunctival HLA-DR antigen was performed by flow cytometry. Results: The total IVCM score (T-IVCM) as well as the IVCM-IC subscore (sc) were positively correlated with HLA-DR levels with r = 0.3, P < 0.001 and r = 0.3, P < 0.01, respectively in the total population of patients with DED. The IVCM-NDsc was negatively correlated with TBUT in patients with AIDED (r = -0.2, P < 0.05) and with the Schirmer's test in patients with NAIDED (r = -0.24, P < 0.05). However, the IVCM-NMsc was positively correlated with the Oxford score only in patients with AIDED (r = 0.3, P < 0.05). Conclusions: The proposed IVCM scoring system showed significant correlations with clinical parameters along with conjunctival HLA-DR quantification in patients with DED. Translational relevance: The IVCM grading score represents an interesting point of commonality among clinical parameters, imaging, and molecular investigation of the ocular surface.

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate whether levels of corneal subbasal nerve fiber length (SNFL) in dry eye disease (DED) could prognosticate the level of improvement in signs and symptoms after treatment. Design: Phase IV, double-masked, randomized clinical trial. Participants: Sixty patients with meibomian gland dysfunction-associated DED and 27 age-matched controls. Methods: Patients with DED were randomized to receive topical artificial tears, loteprednol etabonate 0.5%, or loteprednol etabonate 0.5%/tobramycin 0.3% twice daily for 4 weeks. At baseline, in vivo confocal microscopy of central cornea was performed in both eyes. Patients with DED were divided into 2 subgroups: those with low baseline SNFL and those with near-normal baseline SNFL for this purpose (the cutoff point: the mean SNFL in controls minus 2 standard deviations). Clinical signs and symptoms at baseline and after 4 weeks of treatment were compared between the subgroups with low and near-normal SNFL for all therapeutic groups. Main outcome measures: Symptom questionnaires, corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), conjunctival staining with lissamine green, tear break-up time, Schirmer's test, and SNFL. Results: In patients with DED, baseline SNFL (17.06±5.78 mm/mm(2)) was significantly lower than in controls (23.68±3.42 mm/mm(2), P = 0.001). In the artificial tear and loteprednol groups, although no significant improvement in any sign or symptom was noted in patients with low baseline SNFL (<16.84 mm/mm(2)), subjects with near-normal baseline SNFL (≥16.84 mm/mm(2)) showed significant improvement in both symptoms and CFS score (all P < 0.05). In the loteprednol/tobramycin group, no significant change was evident for any sign or symptom in either subgroup of low or near-normal baseline SNFL. Conclusions: Significant improvements in CFS and patient symptomatology after DED treatment were evident only in the subgroup with near-normal corneal SNFL. Consideration of SNFL may assist in explaining the variability of patients' response to DED therapy.
Clinical Characteristics and Tear Film Biomarkers in Patients With Chronic Dry Eye Disease After Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Laser in Situ Keratomileusis.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To investigate clinical characteristics and tear film biomarkers of patients with chronic dry eye disease (DED) following femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK). METHODS:Patients were divided into the chronic DED after FS-LASIK (n = 36), DED without FS-LASIK (n = 39), and normal control (without FS-LASIK; n = 34) groups. Dry eye, pain, and psychological-related symptoms were evaluated using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory Modified for the Eye (NPSI-Eye), and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) questionnaires. Ocular surface parameters, tear cytokines, and neuropeptide concentrations were evaluated with specific tests. RESULTS:The DED after FS-LASIK group showed higher corneal fluorescein staining scores, but lower OSDI and NPSI-Eye scores than the DED without FS-LASIK group (all P < .05). Corneal sensitivity and nerve density decreased in the DED after FS-LASIK group (all P < .01). Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-23, alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH), oxytocin, and substance P levels were highest in the DED after FS-LASIK group, followed by the DED without FS-LASIK and normal control groups (all P < .05). Interferon-γ and neurotensin levels were only significantly higher in the DED after FS-LASIK group (all P < .05). CONCLUSIONS:Patients with chronic DED after FS-LASIK showed milder ocular symptoms, greater epithelial damage, and higher levels of tear inflammatory cytokines and neuropeptides than patients with DED without FS-LASIK, indicating that the nervous and immune systems may play significant roles in FS-LASIK-related chronic DED development. Confocal Microscopy of the Cornea in Aqueous-Deficient Dry Eye Disease—A Literature Review

Abstract:Background: In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a vital tool in studying dry eye disease (DED), providing insights into morphological changes at ocular surface unit levels. This review presents the main differences in corneal structure between aqueous-deficient dry eye disease (AD-DED) and normal eyes. Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and MEDLINE databases from January 2000 to December 2023 was conducted. The study selection process, as well as data selection and examination, were independently performed by two members of the review team. Results: The review reveals a consistent decrease in corneal surface epithelial cell density in AD-DED cases compared to a control group, but conflicting data on basal epithelial cell density. Notably, the abnormal hyperreflectivity of keratocytes in patients with Sjogren's syndrome was recorded, and there was a significant keratocyte density in AD-DED subjects compared to evaporative DED and control groups. Studies also found a decrease in sub-basal nerve density, increased tortuosity, and the fragmentation of nerve fibers. Dendritic cell density and dendritic cell dendrites increase in AD-DED patients compared to healthy subjects. Conclusions: IVCM is a powerful tool for enhancing our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying DED. However, the review underscores the urgent need to standardize the terminology, analysis, and units used for accurate interpretation, a crucial step in advancing our knowledge of DED.

Conjunctival microvascular responses to anti-inflammatory treatment in patients with dry eye

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Purpose</h3><p>This study characterized conjunctival microvascular morphological and haemodynamic responses after anti-inflammatory treatment in dry eye (DE).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Materials and methods</h3><p>Twenty-five patients with moderate DE (17 females and 8 males aged 48 ± 16 years) who underwent anti-inflammatory therapy (0.1% fluorometholone) and 25 healthy subjects (20 females and 5 males aged 48 ± 17 years) recruited as controls were enrolled. The conjunctival blood flow rate (BFR), blood flow velocity (BFV) and vessel diameter were measured by functional slit-lamp biomicroscopy (FSLB). DE symptoms and signs were assessed. All measurements were performed at baseline and at 30 and 60 days after commencement of treatment.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>At baseline, the conjunctival BFR, BFV, and vessel diameter were higher in the DE group than in the control group (<em>p</em> < 0.05). The BFR, BFV and corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) scores decreased at 60 days after therapy compared to at baseline and 30 days (all <em>p</em> <sub>corrected</sub> < 0.05); Ocular surface diseases index(OSDI), the hyperaemia index (HI) and vessel diameters only showed significant decreases at 30 days. Moreover, significant increases in the noninvasive tear film break-up time (NI-BUT) and Schirmer I test score (ST) were observed. The CFS score correlated positively with BFV (<em>r</em> = 0.46), BFR (<em>r</em> = 0.58) and vessel diameter (<em>r</em> = 0.47).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>This study characterized conjunctival microvascular responses to anti-inflammatory treatment in DE patients. The results suggest that conjunctival BFV and BFR can be used as dynamic markers for treatment efficacy in DE.</p>

Abstract:Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the corneal microstructure and Langerhans cells using in vivo confocal microscopy in keratoconus patients before and after cross-linking, and to correlate the morphologic findings with clinical and patient-reported outcomes, including eye rubbing (ER) behavior. Methods Patients with progressive keratoconus undergoing iontophoresis-assisted epithelium-on cross-linking (I-CXL) were consecutively enrolled. In vivo confocal microscopy was performed before and 6 months after treatment. Patients were asked to quantify their ER behavior on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and completed the Keratoconus Outcomes Research Questionnaire and the Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaires at the same time points. Visual acuity, tear osmolarity, topography, aberrometry, and pachymetry of both eyes were assessed. Results Thirteen patients were included in this pilot study. Preoperatively, the mean Langerhans cells density was 35,615 cells per mm 2 , and the median morphology was 3. The mean ER VAS before treatment was 7,077 out of 10. The ER VAS showed significant positive correlations with both Langerhans cells density and morphology of the study eye. After treatment, a statistically significant reduction in ER VAS and in Langerhans cells variables was observed. The mean sub-basal plexus nerve density was comparable to pre-operative values 6 months after I-CXL. Conclusions Based on this preliminary evidence, the presence of high density of mature Langerhans cells in the central cornea of keratoconus patients and its correlation with eye rubbing support the role of inflammation in keratoconus. The reduction in these markers after treatment may suggest a potential of CXL in moderating immune-related inflammation and eye rubbing in the medium term.

Reduced Efficacy of Low-dose Topical Steroids in Dry Eye Disease Associated With Graft-versus-Host Disease

Abstract:Purpose: To compare the response of dry eye disease (DED) to treatment with topical steroid in patients with and without graft-vs-host disease (GVHD). Design: Post hoc analysis of a double-masked, randomized clinical trial. Methods: This single-center study included 42 patients with moderate-to-severe DED associated with (n = 21) or without (n = 21) chronic GVHD. In each group, patients received either loteprednol etabonate 0.5% ophthalmic suspension or artificial tears twice daily for 4 weeks. Clinical data, including Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), conjunctival lissamine green staining, tear break-up time (TBUT), and Schirmer test, were evaluated before and after treatment. Results: There were no significant differences in signs and symptoms of DED between the groups at baseline. In non-GVHD patients receiving loteprednol treatment, the average OSDI score decreased by 34% from 49.5 ± 5.9 to 32.6 ± 4.8 (mean ± standard error of the mean, P = .001) and the average CFS score decreased by 41% from 5.6 ± 0.6 to 3.3 ± 0.9 (P = .02). On the other hand, loteprednol treatment in GVHD patients resulted in minimal change in OSDI (59.2 ± 6.7 to 61.1 ± 7.1, 3% increase, P = .66) and CFS (5.5 ± 0.5 to 5.3 ± 1.1, 4% decrease, P = .85) scores. Treatment with artificial tears resulted in 22% decrease of OSDI (P = .10) and 32% decrease of CFS (P = .02) scores in non-GVHD patients, and had minimal effect in patients with GVHD. Conclusions: DED patients with ocular GVHD have a less favorable response to a low-dose topical steroid regimen compared with those without ocular GVHD even with similar baseline disease severity.
In Vivo Confocal Microscopy of Conjunctival Goblet Cells in Patients with Sjogren's Syndrome Dry Eye.

Abstract:Background To study the morphology and the density of conjunctival goblet cells (GC) in patients with Sjögren's syndrome dry eye with in vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), and to explore its correlation with the GC density detected by impression cytology. Methods A total of 43 Sjögren's syndrome dry eye patients were recruited. All were required to fill in the Ocular Surface Disease Index Questionnaires. The tear break-up time was measured, followed by corneal fluorescein staining examination and Schirmer I test. The images of conjunctiva were taken by the Heidelberg retina tomography (HRT-II)/Rostock cornea module. Finally, the specimens for impression cytology were obtained. SPSS V.13.0 software was used to analyse the data. Results Tear film function test showed that all patients had moderate to severe dry eye. The GC in LSCM images was characterised as a large hyper-reflective oval-shape cell with relatively homogeneous brightness. Though GC density assessed by LSCM (332±137) cells/mm2 was higher than that measured by impression cytology (200±141) cells/mm2, they showed a significant positive correlation, ρ=0.908 (p<0.05). Conclusion Conjunctival GC could be easily discriminated under the LSCM. LSCM may be a valuable tool in monitoring the progress and the follow-up of patients with Sjögren's syndrome dry eye.

Patients received either loteprednol-etabonate 0.5% twice daily for 14 days tapered to once daily for 14 days, and then twice weekly for 28 days (n = 10), or NaCl 0.9%. Results: A significant decrease of ocular surface inflammation and improvement of symptoms was recorded in the study group compared with controls at days 14 and 56. Change from baseline in HLA-DR expression in CD45+ conjunctival cells was significantly higher in treated patients at day 14. Intraocular pressure and best corrected visual acuity were preserved in all treated eyes. Conclusions: Tapered doses of loteprednol etabonate 0.5% suspension controlled ocular surface inflammation, improving dry eye symptoms.

Abstract:To assess the impact of glucocorticosteroids with varying potencies on inflammatory mediators in tears and corneal optical density after femtosecond-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK). In a prospective study, 110 patients (220 eyes) who underwent FS-LASIK were divided into 2 groups: 55 patients (110 eyes) received dexamethasone, and another 55 patients (110 eyes) received fluorometholone. Visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and corneal optical density were measured before, 1 week, and 1 month after surgery. Tear fluid samples were also collected to assess expression levels of TNF-α, IL-1α, IL-6, and TGF-β1. One week after the procedure, the dexamethasone group exhibited elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) levels (P > .05) and a decreased expression of TNF-α in tears (P < .001) compared to the fluorometholone group. Within the 0 to 2 mm range from the corneal apex, the anterior corneal layer's optical density in the fluorometholone group surpassed that of the dexamethasone group (P < .05). At 1 month post-surgery, the IOP in the fluorometholone group was higher than that in the dexamethasone group (P < .05). In both the 0 to 2 mm and 2 to 6 mm intervals from the corneal apex, the optical density of the anterior corneal layer was significantly higher in the fluorometholone group compared to the dexamethasone group (P < .05). There was no statistically significant difference in visual acuity between the 2 groups at any postoperative time point. Short-term use of potent corticosteroids after FS-LASIK can swiftly address ocular surface inflammation, enhance corneal wound healing, reduce corneal edema, and accelerate the restoration of corneal transparency, in contrast to prolonged use of milder corticosteroids post-surgery.

Abstract:Background/aim To assess the treatment effect of 0.1% ciclosporin A cationic emulsion (CsA CE) versus vehicle on signs/symptoms of dry eye disease (DED) in various subgroups (moderate-to-severe DED/severe DED/Sjögren’s syndrome (SS)/SS with severe DED). Methods Pooled data were analysed from two similar phase III studies: SICCANOVE (moderate-to-severe DED) and SANSIKA (severe DED with severe keratitis). In both studies, patients aged ≥18 years received CsA CE 0.1% (n=395) or vehicle (n=339) once daily for 6 months. A composite responder efficacy endpoint (corneal fluorescein staining–Ocular Surface Disease Index (CFS–OSDI) at month 6) was used to evaluate the efficacy of CsA CE in alleviating signs/symptoms of DED (response defined as improvement of ≥2 grades in CFS and ≥30% in OSDI (baseline to month 6)). Human leucocyte antigen-DR (HLA-DR) conjunctival expression was used as a biomarker of ocular surface inflammation. Results CsA CE–treated patients were significantly more likely to be CFS–OSDI responders than vehicle-treated patients in the overall (OR 1.66, 95% CI 1.11 to 2.50; P=0.015), severe DED (1.80, 1.04 to 3.19; P=0.038) and SS with severe DED (3.37, 1.20 to 11.19; P=0.030) populations. The difference was not significant for CsA CE versus vehicle for the overall Sjögren’s population (OR 1.77, CI 0.89 to 3.66; P=0.109). CsA CE also significantly reduced median HLA-DR expression versus vehicle at 6 months (P=0.002). Conclusion Pooled phase III data indicate CsA CE produced significant improvement in signs/symptoms versus vehicle in patients with moderate-to-severe DED (especially in those with severe keratitis), including patients with SS with severe DED.

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the effects of topical 0.05% cyclosporine A on Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score and ocular surface parameters after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for myopia. Methods: In this study, 151 patients who underwent SMILE were randomized into the control group (71 eyes) and the 0.05% cyclosporine A group (80 eyes). Both groups received standard treatment during the 1 month after SMILE. Over the next 3 months, The control group continued standard therapy (0.3% sodium hyaluronate) and the 0.05% cyclosporine A group received additional 0.05% cyclosporine A. OSDI total and subscale scores, non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT), tear lipid layer thickness (LLT), and tear meniscus height (TMH) were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively. Results: Compared to baseline, the OSDI scores significantly increased in both groups ( P < .001). The 0.05% cyclosporine A group exhibited lower OSDI total scores after administering 0.05% cyclosporine A versus the control group ( P = .026). At 1 month of follow-up, NIBUT, LLT, and TMH values significantly decreased in both groups compared to baseline ( P < .05). The 0.05% cyclosporine A group exhibited higher NIBUT, LLT, and TMH versus the control group, returning to preoperative values after 2 months. Overall, the OSDI total score and NIBUT values during follow-up were not significantly different between the two groups; however, the LLT and TMH values were significantly different between the two groups ( P < .001 and .041, respectively) by repeated measures analysis of variance. Conclusions: Topical 0.05% cyclosporine A was effective in relieving subjective dry eye symptoms and maintaining ocular surface stability in the early postoperative period of SMILE.
