Abstract:The study investigates in 301 university students, the relationship of Big Five Factors Model/BFFM personality traits with gender and parental socioeconomic factors. Students completed the International Personality Item Pool/IPIP-50 item, an online self-report questionnaire, and answered questions about specific socioeconomic factors, the educational level and the profession of the parents separately. Statistical Package for Social Sciences/SPSS, 26.0 was used for statistical analysis. Findings confirm gender differences on the Emotional Stability/Neuroticism and Agreeableness scales. Also, both the low educational level and occupation of the parents were associated with higher Agreeableness and the father's low educational level with higher Conscientiousness.
Peer Interaction and social competence in childhood and early adolescence: the affects of parental behaviour

Abstract:The development of social competence is associated with the set of parental behaviour. The main aim of the study is to verify if different parental styles (Authoritarian, Permissive, Authoritative) affect the child behaviour displayed during peer interactions in an ecological context such as the classroom, according to child’s gender and age. 496 children from 3 to 15 years old, their parents and teachers were involved in our study. Results show that children who are exposed to an Authoritarian parenting in childhood are aggressive, hyperactive and incapable to regulate their own behaviour. Permissive parental style defines an increase of frustration, negative emotionality, and depression. Authoritative parental style promotes the achievement of important social goals/skills. Different affect according to children’s gender and age are discussed. Socio-economic status is positively correlated with an authoritative parenting style and with the increase of prosocial behaviour in children.

Abstract:Currently, the mental health and developmental status of adolescents have not received sufficient attention, playing a crucial role in their education and social adaptation. Parenting methodss and parent-child relationships are among the most critical factors influencing the mental health and growth of adolescents. This study, involving 328 urban middle school teenagers of various ages, utilized a questionnaire to investigate the mental health and psychological resilience of adolescents at different ages. It explored the impact of parent-child closeness, parent-child conflict, and the changing relationships between parenting methodss and parent-child relationships with age on the development of adolescent mental health and their Big Five personality traits. The findings revealed that (1) mothers have a greater influence on the growth of adolescents, especially during the teenage years, and (2) a close parent-child relationship positively affects the psychological growth of adolescents, while conflicting parent-child relationships have the opposite effect.

Abstract:This study assessed the relationship of prosocial behavior to three major areas of development: personality, value, and cognition. Boys and girls (N = 150) from third, fifth, and seventh grades were administered (a) Children's Personality Questionnaire (scored for intelligence, anxiety, and extra version/introversion); (b) Prosocial Reasoning Test (scored for maturity and consistency of concepts of prosocial motivation); and (c) Social Responsibility Scale. Teachers rated children for peer-directed prosocial behavior and assertion. For all children more prosocial behavior was significantly associated with more social responsibility, and with lower anxiety; higher level prosocial concepts and greater consistency were associated with more prosocial behavior. Assertion mediated somewhat the relationship between personality and behavior, and third graders scoring high on introversion chose developmentally higher concepts. Inspection of correlations by grade yielded the pattern that for third graders, cognition, value, and personality variables interrelate to the highest degree; however, largest correlations between behavior and these variables are found in the seventh grade. Findings of greater interrelationships of behavior, personality, and value for seventh graders were explained with the use of a differentiation/integration model of development.

Do Personality Traits Moderate Relations Between Psychologically Controlling Parenting and Problem Behavior in Adolescents?

Abstract:This research examined whether and how adolescents' personality traits moderate associations between psychologically controlling parenting and problem behaviors. On the basis of self-determination theory, we also examined the mediating role of psychological need frustration in the effects of psychologically controlling parenting. A cross-sectional study in two samples (N = 423 and 292; Mage = 12.43 and 15.74 years) was conducted. While in Sample 1 both mothers and adolescents provided reports of parenting and problem behavior, Sample 2 relied on adolescent-reported parenting and mother-reported problem behavior. Psychologically controlling parenting was related to internalizing and externalizing problems in both samples. Little systematic evidence was obtained for the moderating role of personality, with the exception of a moderating effect of Agreeableness. In both samples, psychological control was unrelated to externalizing problems among adolescents high on Agreeableness. Analyses of Sample 2 showed that associations between psychological control and problem behavior were mediated by psychological need frustration. Adolescent personality plays a modest role as a moderator of associations between psychologically controlling parenting and problem behavior. Frustration of adolescents' basic and universal psychological needs can account for the undermining effects of psychologically controlling parenting. Directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:The goal of the current study was to explore the relations between the Big Five personality traits and school achievements of children in the fourth grade of primary school. Participants were (n = 157) children (aged 9–11 years) attending public primary school in Poland. Children completed a self-description inventory for the Big Five and teachers evaluated current school achievements of children for mathematics and Polish language. The obtained results indicated that neuroticism and openness to experiences were significantly associated with school achievements. Moreover, the relationship between the Big Five and school achievements was moderated by gender in that a) agreeableness as well as the Big Five sub-scales of inferiority and helping behaviour were negatively associated with school achievements only among girls, and b) the openness to experience sub-scale of problem solver was positively associated with school achievements only among boys. The results suggest that the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and school achievements may depend on gender.
Bidirectional and interactive effects of child temperament and parenting in early childhood on the trajectory of social anxiety in adolescence

Abstract:Introduction: Research suggests that certain parenting behaviors are best suited to promote optimal child development, depending on a child's distinctive temperamental presentation. This multimethod, longitudinal study examines the interactive effect of parenting and temperament in early childhood on the developmental trajectory of social anxiety in adolescence. Methods: Longitudinal growth modeling was used to examine the developmental trajectory of child social anxiety from age 9-15 and the interactive effect of parenting and child temperament at 36 months on the developmental trajectory of child social anxiety from age 9-15. Results: The slope of social anxiety from age 9-15 suggested a decrease in social anxiety throughout early adolescence. Furthermore, 36-month behavioral inhibition (BI) predicted the trajectory of child social anxiety from age 9-15 when parents displayed low and high levels of dismissive and supportive parenting (at 36 months). Conclusions: Results support an interactive effect of infant temperament and parenting in early childhood (at 36 months) on the developmental trajectory of child social anxiety from age 9-15. Specifically, results suggest that engaging highly inhibited children with high supportive and low dismissive parenting may help reduce social anxiety over time in adolescence. Furthermore, parenting needs may differ for children high or low in BI to impact the developmental trajectory of social anxiety in adolescence, such that children who are high BI seem to benefit from low dismissive and high supportive parenting, and children who are low in BI seem to benefit more from high dismissive parenting.

Abstract:Rearing practices that parents adopt determine different aspects of children's mental health and personality development. The present study investigated the main and interactive retrospective associations between parenting rearing behavior and psychological adjustment in young adulthood in Greece. The sample comprised 540 participants (185 males, 355 females) aged 18-30 years (M = 21.80, S.D. = 2.93). Parenting behavior was measured using short-form of the Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran (s-EMBU). To obtain information pertaining to young adults' psychological adjustment anxiety was evaluated using the trait subscale of Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Trait), depressive symptoms with the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), self-esteem with Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), and perceived social support with the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Results revealed mothers were retrospectively evaluated as overprotective and as emotionally warmer than fathers. Linear multiple dependent regression analyses showed that maternal rejection was associated with the offspring's increased anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as with decreased self-esteem and social support, whereas paternal rejection was linked to increased anxiety and decreased self-esteem. Maternal emotional warmth was associated with less depressive symptoms, whereas both parents' emotional warmth was affiliated with higher social support. A significant interactive effect of paternal and maternal overprotection on offspring's depressive symptoms, respectively, was also found. These findings suggest that the upbringing of young adults receive is associated with their psychological adjustment in later life, thus highlighting the importance of both parents' rearing practices in offspring's psychological well-being.

Abstract:This study examines the relationship between parenting patterns and children's school achievements in Greek society. Parenting practices and parenting style are two child-rearing dynamics which were selected to assess children's school achievements in this study. A total of 101 participants who have at least one child attaining elementary school and who reside in Greece answered an online questionnaire. In line with previous findings, the aim of this study is to examine associations between parenting and primary school students' achievements in Greece. The initial assumption was that both parenting practices and parenting style are associated with academic achievement. Thus, the primary hypotheses under examination in this study are (A) that authoritarian parenting pattern is negatively associated with school achievement; (B) that authoritative parenting style is positively associated with school achievement; and (C) that parental involvement affects children and their school performance. The results show a positive relation between authoritative parenting styles and children's school achievement, although the authoritarian style was associated with lower levels of school achievement. Additionally, the results indicate that the authoritarian style combined with involvement practices is a significant predictor of grades. The more authoritative means that parents use to socialize with their children, the more likely they are to achieve their parenting goals. Nevertheless, it is of critical importance for parents to focus on the learning process and not on the outcome.

Abstract:Positive family functioning during adolescence is usually studied analyzing parents' competences and children's relationship abilities. We present an instrument for the assessment of parental competence, which encompasses both educational style and transmission of values. The objective of the study was to analyze its factor structure and to assess its value in predicting adolescent outcomes. We recruited 2,459 high school students, aged 12–15, in 40 schools from Spain, Peru, Mexico, and Chile. They responded to the instrument and to other questions regarding lifestyles. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were carried out in order to assess the internal structure of the instrument, and internal consistency of the resulting dimensions was calculated. Finally, regression analyses were performed to establish associations between the parenting dimensions and adolescent outcomes. Factor analyses showed a consistent structure, with good fit indices in the four countries. The final four factors include parenting styles (Warmth and Demandingness) and education in values (Fortitude and Privacy). Regression analyses showed associations with adolescent outcomes. For example, adolescents' life satisfaction was best predicted by Warmth and Education in fortitude. Practical implications are suggested.

Abstract:Abstract The important role of parenting is widely acknowledged, but as most studies have understood and examined it as a stable attribute (e.g., parenting style), the stability of and changes in parenting are less well understood. Using longitudinal person-oriented approaches (i.e., latent profile analyses and latent transition analyses), this study aimed to examine the stability of and changes in autonomy-related parenting profiles and their effects on adolescents’ academic and psychological development. Four autonomy-related dimensions (i.e., autonomy support, warmth, psychological control, conditional regard) were chosen to identify parenting profiles on the basis of Self-Determination Theory. Using five-year longitudinal data from 789 German secondary school students (50.06% female, M age at T1 = 10.82 years, age span = 10–17), four autonomy-related parenting profiles were found: Supportive (~17%), Controlling (~31%), Unsupportive-Uncontrolling (~17%), and Limited Supportive (~35%). The results suggest that the Supportive profile contributes to adolescents’ positive academic and psychological development, whereas the Controlling profile, which thwarts autonomy development, exacerbates the development of psychopathology, and impairs academic achievement. More importantly, the Limited Supportive profile is as maladaptive as the Unsupportive-Uncontrolling profile. Regarding parenting profiles’ stability and changes, the results showed that about half of each profile stayed in the same group. Overall, it could be observed that parents became more supportive and less controlling over time. However, the findings also indicate that parenting profiles are less stable than expected and can still change during early-to-mid adolescence.

The Impact of Adolescents' Attachment to Peers and Parents on Aggressive and Prosocial Behavior: A Short-Term Longitudinal Study

Abstract:This short-longitudinal study analyzed the cross-sectional and longitudinal pathways linking adolescent's quality of attachment to parents and peers and their practice of aggressive and prosocial behavior; it also explored the moderation effect of gender on those pathways. A total of 375 secondary school students (203 girls and 172 boys), aged between 15 and 19 years old, completed the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment and the Peer Experience Questionnaire - Revised twice, within a four-month gap. Using a path analyses approach, results showed that aggression and prosocial behavior were the strongest predictors of themselves overtime. Attachment to mother had a cross-sectional effect on aggression and on prosocial behavior via attachment to peers, and attachment to peers predicted prosocial behavior; overall, the higher the quality of attachment, the lowest the practice of aggression and the highest the practice of prosocial behavior. These effects held stable for boys and girls, though gender-based differences were found in mean levels of attachment to peers and social behaviors. Even if other variables may be in place when understanding adolescents' social behaviors, attachment to mother and peers also seem to play a relevant role in trying to achieve safer and more positive school climates. Suggestions on how to accomplish this are shortly discussed.

Abstract:Parenting x Child Personality interactions in predicting child externalizing and internalizing behavior were investigated in a variable-centered study and a person-centered study. The variable-centered study used data from a 3-year longitudinal study of 600 children 7 to 15 years old at Time 1 and 512 children 10 to 18 years old at Time 2. Parents rated child personality (five factor model), negative control, positive parenting, and child problem behavior, whereas children rated parental behavior. Hierarchical moderated regression analyses showed significant Parenting x Child Personality (benevolence and conscientiousness) interactions, principally for externalizing behavior. The interactions were largely replicable across informants and across time. The person-centered study, which classified participants into 3 types, showed that negative parental control was more related to externalizing behavior for undercontrollers than for resilients. Negative parental control enhanced internalizing behavior for overcontrollers.

Abstract:The main purpose of this study is to examine the predictive role of preschool children's attachment on social competence, anxiety, aggression, and self-control of 5-year-old children (60-71 months), and to test the mediating effect of peer relationships in this model. A total of 309 children participated in the study. The data of the study were collected through the teacher checklist of peer relationships, the social competence and behavior evaluation scale-30, the self-control rating scale which the teacher filled out, and the doll story completion task which the researcher used during the application process. Path analysis was used to explain the direct and indirect relationships between the variables, and a Sobel test was also used to determine the mediational role of peer relationships. The results showed that peer relationships had a mediating effect on parental attachment between anxiety, anger, social competence, and self-control. This study shows that the reflections of insecure attachment experienced in the first years of life can be reduced by peer relationships and the reflections of secure attachment can be strengthened by peer relationships.

Abstract:Adolescence is a vulnerable period for psychopathology development, and certain parenting styles are consistent and robust predictors of a broad range of mental health outcomes. The mechanisms through which maladaptive parenting styles affect the development of psychopathology are assumed to be largely social in nature. Yet, the social mechanisms linking parenting to psychopathology are unexplored at arguably the most important level of functioning: daily life. This study aims to identify the associations between three parenting styles, and the experience of daily-life social interactions. Furthermore, we aim to explore the extent to which these parenting styles and altered daily-life social experiences are associated with psychopathology. In this study, we recruited a sample of N = 1,913 adolescents (63.3% girls; mean age = 13.7, age range = 11 to 20) as part of the first wave of the longitudinal cohort study “SIGMA”. Parenting styles (psychological control, responsiveness, and autonomy support) and psychopathology symptoms were assessed using a retrospective questionnaire battery. The experienced quality of social interactions in different types of company was assessed using the experience sampling method, ten times per day for 6 days. Direct associations between parenting styles and general quality of daily-life social experiences were tested using a three-level linear model, revealing significant associations between social experiences and different parenting styles. When interaction effects were added to this model, we found that maternal responsiveness and paternal psychological control mainly related to altered qualities of social interactions with parents, while paternal autonomy support was associated with better experiences of non-family social interactions. Finally, an exploratory path analysis highlighted how both paternal autonomy support and altered quality of non-family interactions are uniquely associated with psychopathology levels. These findings demonstrate the general and pervasive effects of maladaptive parenting styles, as parenting seems to broadly affect adolescents' interactions with different types of social partners in everyday life. Moreover, they illustrate a potential mediated relationship in which altered daily-life social interactions could drive the development of psychopathology. A stronger focus may be required on the role of altered day-to-day social experiences in the prevention and potentially, the treatment, of adolescent psychopathology.

Abstract:In this article, existing research investigating how school performance relates to cognitive, self-awareness, language, and personality processes is reviewed. We outline the architecture of the mind, involving a general factor, g , that underlies distinct mental processes (i.e., executive, reasoning, language, cognizance, and personality processes). From preschool to adolescence, g shifts from executive to reasoning and cognizance processes; personality also changes, consolidating in adolescence. There are three major trends in the existing literature: (a) All processes are highly predictive of school achievement if measured alone, each accounting for ∼20% of its variance; (b) when measured together, cognitive processes (executive functions and representational awareness in preschool and fluid intelligence after late primary school) dominate as predictors (over ∼50%), drastically absorbing self-concepts and personality dispositions that drop to ∼3%–5%; and (c) predictive power changes according to the processes forming g at successive levels: attention control and representational awareness in preschool (∼85%); fluid intelligence, language, and working memory in primary school (∼53%); fluid intelligence, language, self-evaluation, and school-specific self-concepts in secondary school (∼70%). Stability and plasticity of personality emerge as predictors in secondary school. A theory of educational priorities is proposed, arguing that (a) executive and awareness processes; (b) information management; and (c) reasoning, self-evaluation, and flexibility in knowledge building must dominate in preschool, primary, and secondary school, respectively. Abstract:Researchers have shown that the five major dimensions of personality (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience) and two additional factors (irritability and positive activity) are evident from adolescence. This study attempted to replicate and extend these results in a longitudinal study of 102 Swedish children, followed from 2.3 to 15.2 years of age. Item analyses revealed consistently reliable irritability, conscientiousness, and positive activity factors, whereas the internal reliability of the extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, and openness to experience factors increased over time. Irritability and positive activity were not independent of the other factors. Scores on most of the personality factors were fairly stable over time. Over time, children became less extraverted, more agreeable, and more conscientious. Neuroticism and openness to experience increased in Phase III, although openness then decreased in Phase V. Validity of the original factors was demonstrated by correlations with independent assessments of the children's cognitive performance and adjustment to school.

Abstract:Clinical Psychological Science, Ahead of Print. In this study, we examined how Big Five personality traits relate to outcome-based resilience in primarily female, upper-middle class, ethnically diverse U.S. adolescents (baseline N = 535; age range = 15–17) oversampled on elevated neuroticism. Cross-sectional, prospective-longitudinal, and dynamic analyses were performed with 8-year longitudinal data. Using a residualization approach, we approximated resilience as low stressor reactivity, calculated by regressing depression and anxiety diagnosis severity onto chronic stressor exposure over 1-year periods. Cross-sectional associations with stressor reactivity were observed for neuroticism (positive), extraversion (negative), openness (positive), and conscientiousness (negative). A positive prospective-longitudinal association with stressor reactivity was observed for neuroticism. In contemporaneous and lagged dynamic analyses, within-persons dynamics and mean levels of neuroticism (positive) and extraversion (negative) were associated with stressor reactivity. There were also unique associations with stressor reactivity for neuroticism (positive), extraversion (negative), and agreeableness (positive). Results indicate relevance of mean levels and intraindividual dynamics of personality, particularly neuroticism, for resilience in adolescents.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the relationship between personality traits,emotional regulation strategies and social anxiety in adolescents.Methods:The research recruited teenagers aged from 11 to 19,using a Chinese-version NEO-Five-Factor Inventory(NEO-FFI),Emotion Regulation Strategies Questionnaire and Social Anxiety Scale.Results:The results showed that social anxiety was negatively correlated with the kindness,conscientiousness,extraversion and openness,and positively correlated with the neuroticism.In addition,cognitive reappraisal strategy was significantly and positively correlated with kindness,conscientiousness,extraversion,openness,and negatively correlated with the kindness,extraversion,neuroticism and social anxiety.Cognitive reappraisal had a partially intermediary effect between kindness and openness and social anxiety; Expression suppression had a partial intermediary effect between kindness and social anxiety.Conclusion:The emotion regulation strategy acted as a mediator between the personality traits and social anxiety in adolescents.In addition,different emotion regulation strategies(cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression) play different roles in such relationship.
The relationship between parenting behavior and the personality of kindergarten children

Abstract:According to Cloninger's biosocial model of personality touching upon temperament and character, personality development is a lifelong adaptive process that begins in early childhood. Similarly, theories of parenting behavior and attachment predict that associations between personality and parenting behavior should be found in young children. The present study therefore had the goal to investigate, whether associations between parenting behavior and personality in terms of Cloninger's temperament and character dimensions previously found in adolescence and adults can already be observed in kindergarten children. This study assessed personality in a sample of 324 kindergarten children (169 girls/155 boys) aged 3–6 years ( M age = 4.59, SD = 0.90). Parents rated their children's temperament and character using the JTCI 3–6 R questionnaire, which has been specifically developed to measure personality dimensions in three to six-year-olds according to Cloninger's model. Character traits (especially Self-Transcendence), which reach mature levels in adults, may not be reliably assessed in three-year-old children. Parenting behavior was documented using the DEAPQ-EL-GS self-report questionnaire measuring the parenting behavior dimensions Responsiveness and Demandingness. Correlation analyses revealed that responsive parenting behavior was positively related to the personality dimensions Reward Dependence, Self-Directedness, and Self-Transcendence. Demanding parenting behavior was positively related to the personality dimension Novelty Seeking, but negatively related to the personality dimensions Persistence, Self-Directedness and Cooperativeness. Although the cross-sectional design of our study prevents unequivocal conclusions about the causal direction of these associations, our results highlight possible differential consequences of responsive vs. demanding parenting behavior for personality development in children in line with theories of parenting behavior and attachment. Our results thus advance earlier work in adolescents and adults, by showing that parenting behavior influences the development of the child's personality according to Cloninger's biosocial model already in three to six-year-olds.
