Abstract:Nitrogen dynamics and microbial food web structure were characterized in subtropical, eutrophic, large (2,338 km2), shallow (1.9 m mean depth), and polymictic Lake Taihu (China) in Sept–Oct 2002 during a cyanobacterial bloom. Population growth and industrialization are factors in trophic status deterioration in Lake Taihu. Sites for investigation were selected along a transect from the Liangxihe River discharge into Meiliang Bay to the main lake. Water column nitrogen and microbial food web measurements were combined with sediment–water interface incubations to characterize and identify important processes related to system nitrogen dynamics. Results indicate a gradient from strong phosphorus limitation at the river discharge to nitrogen limitation or co-limitation in the main lake. Denitrification in Meiliang Bay may drive main lake nitrogen limitation by removing excess nitrogen before physical transport to the main lake. Five times higher nutrient mineralization rates in the water column versus sediments indicate that sediment nutrient transformations were not as important as water column processes for fueling primary production. However, sediments provide a site for denitrification, which, along with nitrogen fixation and other processes, can determine available nutrient ratios. Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) was important, relative to denitrification, only at the river discharge site, and nitrogen fixation was observed only in the main lake. Reflecting nitrogen cycling patterns, microbial food web structure shifted from autotrophic (phytoplankton dominated) at the river discharge to heterotrophic (bacteria dominated) in and near the main lake.

Abstract:Eutrophication alters the function of lake ecosystems through phytoplankton blooms and is a major contributor to organic carbon (OC) burial in lakes worldwide. Although Lake Taihu is notable for its severe eutrophication yet low OC burial, why cyanobacteria-derived OC is ineffectively buried in the lake is unknown. Because seasonal hydrological and ecological dynamics in eutrophic lacustrine ecosystems would significantly modify the preservation and degradation behaviors of OC, seasonal variations in paired particulate samples from both the water column and surface sediment are critical in evaluating cyanobacteria-derived OC burial. In this study, we present the steroid results of water and sediments collected from Meiliang Bay in Lake Taihu across cyanobacteria-bloom and decay seasons (from May 2018 to June 2019) to investigate constraints on the seasonal burial of autochthonous and allochthonous OC. The results indicate that cyanobacteria contribute a considerable amount of OC to the water body in the cyanobacterial bloom season, while terrestrial OC becomes the main contributor during the cyanobacterial decay season. Although OC degradation occurs throughout the water column, substantially more OC degradation was observed at the water-sediment interface. The extensive degradation of OC in the bloom season eventually reverses the seasonal distribution characteristics of particulate OC in the water column, leading to less accumulation of OC under the background of higher cyanobacteria-derived OC input. The combined effect of OC bioavailability, temperature, oxygen exposure, and more importantly microorganism activities, accounts for much higher OC degradation rates in the bloom season. Similar phenomena were observed in subtropical shallow lakes with high primary productivity, suggesting that eutrophication might have a limited influence on OC burial when compared to other factors related to OC degradation.

Abstract:Temporal distribution phytoplankton community structure in a shallow lake, Lake Taihu, China, was investigated from 2010 to 2011 on a monthly basis at 9 sampling stations. The results showed that phytoplankton communities primarily consist of cyanobacteria, chlorophyta and bacillariophyta in Lake Taihu. A significant change in phytoplankton community was observed in both years: cyanobacteria hold an overwhelming dominance in summer and autumn, chloraphyta and bacillariophyta occupied the certain proportion only when the cyanobacterial bloom was declined in winter and early spring. The maximum abundance value of cyanobacteria, chlorophyta and bacillariophyta appeared at June, 2010, July, 2011 and Feb, 2011, respectively. The present study is a continuation and complement in long-term research of Lake Taihu, which provides scientific foundation for further research of the lake.
Trophic homogeneity due to seasonal variation in nitrogen in shallow subtropical lakes

Abstract:Lakes play a crucial role in the nitrogen (N) cycle, and eutrophication disrupts the balance of the nitrogen cycle within lakes, including both the N removal process and the N supplement process. However, the mechanisms by which different nutrient levels affect seasonal nitrogen variations in the water columns are not clear, especially for long-term and large- scale studies. In this study, we used 206 independent spatial samples from a total of 108 subtropical shallow lakes from four surveys in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, as well as time-case study data from Lake Taihu and Lake Donghu of up to 23 and 14 years, respectively, to analyze the changes in summer TN compared to spring (delta TN). Delta TN was significantly negatively correlated with initial spring TN concentrations, with similar trends observed in both space and time. Furthermore, the slopes of spring TN vs. delta TN varied little across lakes in both time and space, suggesting a consistent relationship between initial spring TN and summer TN changes. When initial TN or TN: TP ratio was low, N fixation by algae played a significant role in compensating for summer N removal, thus mitigating summer N reductions; when TN was high or TN: TP ratio was high, ammonia stress reduced the compensatory effect of algae and denitrification played a significant role in summer N removal, thus increasing summer N reductions. Our study suggested that no matter what the initial conditions are, lakes tend to evolve towards a common nutrient status through biological regulation.

Abstract:AbstractGaining a deeper understanding of factors that influence changes in phytoplankton community has significant implications for shallow lake management. The present study examined changes in the algae community of three shallow eutrophic lakes of the Taoge water system between 2008 and 2018 and the related factors influencing these changes. The composition of the algal community varied significantly during this period with the relative diatom biomass in lakes Changdanghu and Gehu increasing between 2014 and 2016 and again decreasing after 2017. However, relative cyanobacteria biomass initially decreased and later increased; meanwhile, the proportion of biomass of other phyla decreased continuously in the study period. Lake Zhushanhu showed similar trends, although it eventually returned to its initial state with absolute Microcystis dominance. Furthermore, the analysis of driving factors revealed that the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), nitrate (NO3), and orthophosphate (PO4) were significantly associated with a significant increase in Microcystis biomass. Meteorological conditions also influenced changes in total algal and diatom biomasses, which were inversely related to the daily mean and daily maximum wind speeds. Monthly cumulative precipitation was only significantly associated with diatom biomass. Meanwhile, rainfall primarily affected the algal community structure between 2013 and 2017; an increase in the relative biomass of diatoms coincided with increased precipitation. Coordinating nitrogen and phosphorous use within the Taoge water system should improve lake habitat management; a broader perspective in attempts to control global and regional climate change may be needed.

Abstract:The effect of purified, recombinant murine gamma interferon (IFN‐γ) on the regulation of macrophage proliferation induced by colony‐stimulating factor 1 (CSF‐1) was investigated. Although both hemopoietic stem cells (GM‐CFC) and tissue‐derived peritoneal exudate macrophages (PEM) proliferated in response to CSF‐1, the more mature PEM were much more sensitive to an antiproliferative effect of IFN‐γ. The role of IFN‐γ receptor expression and its relationship to growth inhibition was examined. Bone marrow cells as a whole did not exhibit an appreciable amount of IFN‐γ receptor binding activity. Likewise, nonadherent (NA) cells derived from CSF‐1‐stimulated bone marrow cultures displayed low levels of IFN‐γ receptor binding activity. On the contrary, more mature adherent (AD) cells (monocytes/macrophages) from the same culture exhibited high levels of IFN‐γ receptor binding activity which continued to increase with culture time. The elevated IFN‐γ binding activity is due to an increase in total receptor number rather than the binding affinity as judged by Scatchard analysis. Similar to the relationship between PEM and GM‐CFC, more mature AD cells were also more susceptible to the inhibitory effect of IFN‐γ on CSF‐1‐induced proliferation than their less mature NA counterparts. The fact that the sensitivity to IFN‐γ correlated well with the expression of existing IFN‐γ receptors strongly suggests that the inhibitory effect is mediated through IFN‐γ receptors. This study shows that the expression of IFN‐γ receptors in mononuclear phagocytes may not only represent one of the phenotypic parameters acquired by the growing macrophages during the process of differentiation, but may play some role in controlling proliferation.

Abstract:Lakes are an important component of the climate system. They provide moisture for precipitation, buffer temperature variations, and contribute to regional atmospheric carbon budgets. This article describes an eddy covariance (EC) mesonet on Lake Taihu, a large (area 2400 km(2)) and shallow (depth 2 m) lake situated in the heavily populated Yangtze River Delta, China. The mesonet consists of five lake sites, representing different biological attributes and wind-wave patterns, and a land site near the lake shore. Common to all the sites are standard EC instruments for measurement of the momentum, sensible heat, water vapor, and CO2 flux. One site is also equipped with laser-based analyzers for precise measurement of the CO2, CH4, and H2O mixing ratios and their isotopic compositions. To the authors' best knowledge, this is the first lake eddy flux mesonet. Early results reveal evidence of biological and pollution controls on the surface-air fluxes of energy, momentum, and greenhouse gases across the lake. The data will be used to address five science questions: 1) Are lake-air parameterizations established for deep lakes applicable to shallow lakes? 2) Why are lake-land breeze circulations less prevalent in the Taihu lake basin than in lake basins in northern latitudes? 3) How do algal blooms alter the lake-atmosphere interactions? 4) Is this eutrophic lake a source or sink of atmospheric CO2? 5) Does the decay of algal and macrophyte biomass contribute significant amounts of CH4 to the atmosphere?
Temporal shifts in the phytoplankton network in a large eutrophic shallow freshwater lake subjected to major environmental changes due to human interventions

Abstract:Phytoplankton communities are crucial components of aquatic ecosystems, and since they are highly interactive, they always form complex networks. Yet, our understanding of how interactive phytoplankton networks vary through time under changing environmental conditions is limited. Using a 29-year (339 months) long-term dataset on Lake Taihu, China, we constructed a temporal network comprising monthly sub-networks using "extended Local Similarity Analysis" and assessed how eutrophication, climate change, and restoration efforts influenced the temporal dynamics of network complexity and stability. The network architecture of phytoplankton showed strong dynamic changes with varying environments. Our results revealed cascading effects of eutrophication and climate change on phytoplankton network stability via changes in network complexity. The network stability of phytoplankton increased with average degree, modularity, and nestedness and decreased with connectance. Eutrophication (increasing nitrogen) stabilized the phytoplankton network, mainly by increasing its average degree, while climate change, i.e., warming and decreasing wind speed enhanced its stability by increasing the cohesion of phytoplankton communities directly and by decreasing the connectance of network indirectly. A remarkable shift and a major decrease in the temporal dynamics of phytoplankton network complexity (average degree, nestedness) and stability (robustness, persistence) were detected after 2007 when numerous eutrophication mitigation efforts (not all successful) were implemented, leading to simplified phytoplankton networks and reduced stability. Our findings provide new insights into the organization of phytoplankton networks under eutrophication (or re-oligotrophication) and climate change in subtropical shallow lakes.
Long-term Seasonal Nutrient Limiting Patterns at Meiliang Bay in a Large, Shallow and Subtropical Lake Taihu, China

Abstract:Lake Taihu has undergone severe eutrophication in the past three decades, and harmful cyanobacteria blooms occur nearly every year in Meiliang Bay at the north end of the lake. To elucidate the potential relationship between seasonal nutrient limitation and phytoplankton proliferation, a 20-year (1992-2011) time series of nutrient limitation in Meiliang Bay was analysed for deviations between trophic state index (TSI) parameters. Results showed that patterns of nutrient limitation in Meiliang Bay were distinctly seasonal, where phytoplankton growth was generally phosphorus (P)-limited in winter and spring, but nitrogen (N)-limited mainly occurred in summer and fall. This general pattern, however, shifted into N limitation across the four seasons during the mid-1990s because a rapid increase in industrialization led to a significant rise in the input of N and P from inflowing tributaries. The initial patterns were restored by environmental regulation in the end of 1990s, including the Zero Actions plan. Using routine monitoring data, a generalised additive model (GAM) with time and deviations between trophic state indexes for nitrogen and phosphorus (TSIN-TSIP) as explanatory variables was used to explore which nutrient was responsible for limitation of phytoplankton chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in different seasons. Surprisingly, the model revealed a weak N limitation (TSIN-TSIP=-10) corresponded to peak values of Chl-a in summer-autumn season, which is probably because the phytoplankton community is co-limited by N and P during the period. The shift of nutrition limitation during winter-spring would partially explain high values of Chl-a throughout 1996. This study suggests that seasonal patterns of nutrient limitation must be considered to develop effective management measures to control cyanobacterial blooms.
Synergy of lacustrine groundwater discharge and algal biomass on CH 4 and CO 2 pathways and emissions in a large shallow eutrophic lake

Abstract:Inland lakes are known to be significant component of global carbon (C) cycle, with C pathways in these lakes potentially changing alongside their eutrophic states. One factor contributing to eutrophication is lacustrine groundwater discharge (LGD), which is also a key conduit for CH 4 and CO 2 to enter lakes. However, the regulation of LGD on CH 4 and CO 2 behavior in these lakes remains unclear. To address this gap, we conducted continuous monitoring of 222 Rn, CH 4 and CO 2 , and δ 13 C at two sites with distinct algal densities in Lake Taihu, a large shallow eutrophic lake in China, and aimed to investigate the synergy of LGD and algal biomass on CH 4 and CO 2 pathways and emissions. We found that organic matter (OM) degradation is the dominant factor controlling CH 4 and CO 2 production in the lake, and this process appears to be facilitated by the presence of ample OM and reduced oxygen level at the site with high algal density. In addition, LGD is found to be a significant contributor of CH 4 and CO 2 to the lake, and the nutrients derived from LGD play a crucial role in regulating the proliferation of algae in the lake. As algal density increases, gas emissions such as CH 4 ebullition and CO 2 diffusion are amplified, while processes such as CH 4 oxidation and atmospheric CO 2 exchange within lakes are attenuated. The contribution of LGD to CH 4 and CO 2 inventories in the lake also decreases as OM degradation becomes a more significant contributor. This study highlights LGD regulation on the C flux and underscores the importance of synergistical studies from both ecological and hydrogeological perspectives in comprehending lacustrine C flux dynamics.

Abstract:A comprehensive 3-dimensional hydrodynamic and eutrophication model, the environmental fluid dynamics code model (EFDC) with three functional phytoplankton groups, was applied to simulate the algal dynamics in a mesotrophic P-limited subtropical plateau lake, Lake Erhai, Southwestern China. Field investigations revealed the seasonal patterns in external total phosphorus (TP) input and TP concentration, as well as the composition of the phytoplankton community. The model was calibrated to reproduce qualitative features and the succession of phytoplankton communities, and the net primary production was calculated. The modeled daily net primary production (NPP) ranged between −16.89 and 15.12 mg C/m2/d and exhibited significant seasonal variation. The competition for phosphorus and temperature was identified as the primary governing factor of NPP by analyzing the parameter sensitivity and limitation factors of the lake. The simulation of four nutrient loading reduction scenarios suggested high phytoplankton biomass and NPP sensitivity to the external TP reduction. A significant positive correlation was found among NPP, total phytoplankton biomass and TP concentration. Overall, this work offers an alternative approach to estimating lake NPP, which has the potential to improve sustainable lake management.

Abstract:The study of lake-trophic status drivers and their variable effects over space and time can assist in the management of lake eutrophication. Winter dynamics in lake trophic status are rarely evaluated, yet they could vary drastically from the more commonly sampled summer patterns. This represents a key blindspot in our knowledge because ice sheets affect nutrient distribution (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus), light infiltration (translucency), and phytoplankton propagation (Chl-a concentration). We examined long-term (2011–2020) changes in the trophic status (trophic level index; TLI) of Lake Wuliangsuhai, a shallow lake situated in a cold and arid region, using Generalized Additive Models (GAMs). The results suggested a significant decrease in eutrophication of Wuliangsuhai Lake over the study period, with TLI decreasing from 61.7 (moderately eutrophic) in 2011 to 49.9 (mesotrophic) in 2020. TLI was significantly higher over winter ( p summer (54.7) > autumn (54.2) > spring (54.0). TLI of the ice-covered period (58.7) significantly exceeded that of the ice-free period (54.3) ( p < 0.05). There were also significant spatial differences in TLI ( p < 0.05). Factors driving the spatial and temporal heterogeneity in lake trophic levels included the water supplement, water depth, water temperature, external inputs of nutrients, hydrodynamic conditions (flow velocity), distribution of phragmites, and the location of the main diversion channel.

Abstract:Lake Taihu is the third largest freshwater lake in China with severe eutrophication issues. However, it remains ambiguous how its phytoplankton growth is limited by various nutrients in different seasons. A series of bottle-enrichment assays in Meiliang Bay was thus performed once a month from July, 2011 to June, 2012 in the present study. The initial chlorophyll a concentration and phytoplankton cell density ranged from 4.70 to 34.6μg/l and from 1.25×106 to 6.72×108cells/l with three peaks in July, November, and March. Although Cyanophyta was dominant (30.9–99.2 percent) in most cases, other phyla like Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Cryptophyta could account for as much as 69.1 percent of total phytoplankton in cold seasons. The microcystin-LR content in the particulate phase followed a similar seasonal pattern as Cyanophyta. It further went up exponentially with the proportion of cyanobacteria in phytoplankton suggesting more toxigenic species and (or) upregulated microcystin synthesis when the contribution of Cyanophyta was enhanced. On the other hand, the dissolved concentrations of various nitrogen and phosphorus species reached their maxima in late spring and autumn, respectively. According to its growth response to nutrient addition, phytoplankton in Meiliang Bay was restricted by nitrogen in August, October, and November. No nutrient limitation occurred in July, September, and April, whereas phosphorus deficiency prevailed in the other months. Overall, nutrient limitation in Lake Taihu and possibly other aquatic ecosystems worldwide may be more dynamic than what we thought before, which should be considered to eliminate eutrophication.

Abstract:In lake aquatic ecosystems, which form the material and energy base of lakes, primary production is critical. The present study addresses the characteristics of primary phytoplankton productivity and its relationship with environmental physicochemical factors in three typical zones (algae-type, transition, and grass-type) of the eutrophic Lake Taihu. Seasonal sampling was conducted, and black–white bottle oxygen measurement was used to determine the primary productivity in different water layers in the lake. The results show obvious temporal and spatial differences in the physicochemical factors and phytoplankton productivity in Lake Taihu. The water column productivity and respiration conformed to the following seasonal descending order, summer > fall > spring > winter, and the following regional descending order, algae-type zone > transition zone > grass-type zone. The seasonal proportions of primary productivity were approximately 40% in the summer, 25% in the fall, 20% in the spring, and less than 15% in the winter. The highest values of water layer productivity and respiration were mainly at a depth of 0.2 m and decreased with the water depth. The percentage of productivity at different water layers was 23% (0 m), 31% (0.2 m), 23% (0.4 m), 11% (0.6 m), 7% (0.8 m), and 5% (1 m). The optical compensation depth for Lake Taihu was about 0.8 times the transparency (SD). Spearman correlation indicated that the temperature (T) and water depth (D) had an obvious impact on productivity in all three lake zones. Multiple stepwise regression suggested that T, D, SD, and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) can be used to estimate productivity in different seasons/regions. The main influencing factors on phytoplankton productivity are T, D, Chl-a, and SD in the algae-type and transition zones and T, D, and total suspended solids (TSSs) in the grass-type zone.

Abstract:Nutrient dynamics in lakes are determined by the external anthropogenic discharges and unobserved internal cycling processes. In this work, a decadal nutrient data set from the eutrophic Lake Taihu, China, revealed a strong seasonal pattern of nutrient concentration and limitation. A nutrient-driven dynamic eutrophication model based on a Bayesian hierarchical framework was established to quantify the relative contributions to temporal variations from external discharges and internal processes. Results showed that after years of efforts on nutrient reduction, external discharges were relatively small and fluctuated less between seasons compared to the internal processes. A quantitative relationship between monthly nutrient concentration and corresponding internal loading was observed. Lake sediment could transform from a source of phosphorus in overlying water in summer and autumn to a sink in winter and spring. Together with temporal variations in nitrification and denitrification, seasonal transformation from the limitation of phosphorus induced colimitation of nitrogen and phosphorus. Understanding the potential impact of internal nutrient cycling on a seasonal pattern of nutrient concentration and limitation, the growth of phytoplankton, and, possibly, phytoplankton community composition should be emphasized, given the change in the relative importance of external discharges and internal loading in the process of lake restoration.
Reconstruction of Ecological Transitions in a Temperate Shallow Lake of the Middle Yangtze River Basin in the Last Century

Abstract:Exogenous drivers may cause a gradual and reversible change in a lake equilibrium, or they may force it over a threshold to a persistent alternative stable state, described as a regime shift in the ecosystem. In the mid-and-lower Yangtze River Basin (MLYB), major environmental problems in shallow lakes have been eutrophication and abrupt algal blooms under anthropogenic disturbances for the recent century. Much value is therefore placed on understanding the changes in shallow-lake ecosystems that characteristically precede changes in the state of the lake. Here, we describe a case study of the paleolimnological signature in diatom assemblages of various types of regime shifts caused by historically documented anthropogenic drivers in a temperate shallow lake: Taibai Lake. We evaluate the effectiveness of paleolimnological data as a surrogate for long-term monitoring. Algorithms using sequential t and F statistics detected breakpoints in the time series of diatom assemblages, in 1994–1996, 1974–1977, 1952–1956, and 1931–1934, respectively. The regression statistics suggest that the hydrodynamic–ecosystem and aquacultural–ecosystem relationships fit better in the breakpoint regression model, and the relationship between nutrient loading and ecosystem state suits the linear model. Feedback loops help reconstruct dynamic changes in Taibai influenced by major stressors. Our study exemplifies the value of system approaches to identifying regime shifts and their possible causes in shallow lakes from paleolimnological records. The case study of Taibai set an example of reconstructing the ecological regime shifts in shallow lakes in the MLYB and understanding the state changes in lake ecosystems, which will benefit effective lake management.
Eco-model Based Analysis of Lake Taihu Cyanobacteria Growth Factors

Abstract:Based on an eco-model,we analyzed the monthly monitoring data of Lake Taihu from April 2009 to November 2010,and found that the growth rates of Lake Taihu cyanobacteria showed significant both temporal and spatial differences.The growth rates of cyanobacteria were low from January to April,and from October to December,while high level from June to September.But the growth rates in May showed annual difference.Furthermore,the growth rates in western lakeshore were higher than those in the central lake.The growth of cyanobacteria from surface water to one-meter depth was active.Growth of cyanobacteria was mainly controlled by water temperature,illumination and phosphorus concentration.These three limiting factors showed significant seasonal variation and interchanged with the others.In the surface water,temperature and phosphorus were the main limiting factors,while temperature,phosphorus and illumination at the depth of half a meter,and illumination below one-meter depth.The result showed that phosphorus concentration in summer and fall was the major limit on nutrient phosphorus,and also limit on nitrogen in some areas.
Spatiotemporal dynamics of phytoplankton biomass and community succession for driving factors in a meso-eutrophic lake

Abstract:Effects of climate change and nutrient load caused by human activities on lake phytoplankton blooms have attracted much attention globally. However, their roles and synergistic effects on phytoplankton biomass and community historical succession are not well understood, especially for meso-eutrophic plateau lakes. In this study, a multi-year (1997-2022) monthly dataset including hydro-chemical and meteorological indicators of the meso-eutrophic plateau lake Erhai in China, was used to explore the contributions of climate change and nutrients on phytoplankton biomass variation and community succession. Phytoplankton biomass increased from 1997 to 2006, slowly decreased from 2006 to 2015, then increased again from 2015 to 2022, according to a generalised additive model (GAM). Alongside warming, nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter are key drivers of long-term interannual variation in phytoplankton biomass and historical succession of the phytoplankton community. The extensive blooms in recent years were strongly associated with both organic matter accumulation and global warming. Phytoplankton biomass in northern and southern districts was greater than in central areas, with Cyanophyta and Pyrrophyta dominating in the north and Chlorophyta prevalent in the south. Since 2015, phytoplankton diversity has increased significantly, and biomass has declined in the southern district but increased markedly in the northern district. Spatial heterogeneity was caused by the spatial distribution of nutrients and the buoyancy regulation capacity of cyanobacteria. The results demonstrate that bloom mitigation responds strongly to nitrogen and phosphorus control in meso-eutrophic lakes, therefore preventing and controlling blooms through nitrogen and phosphorus reduction is still an effective measure. Given the accumulation of organic matter in recent years, synergistic control of organic matter and total nitrogen and phosphorus could effectively reduce the risk of cyanobacterial and dinoflagellate blooms.
