Abstract:The fluoroquinolone derivatives have been shown to inhibit human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication at the transcriptional level. We confirmed the anti-HIV activity of the most potent congener, 8-difluoromethoxy-1-ethyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-7-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl]-4-quinolone-3-carboxylic acid (K-12), in both acutely and chronically infected cells. K-12 was active against different strains of HIV-1 (including AZT-and ritonavir-resistant HIV-1 strains), HIV-2 and simian immunodeficiency virus, in MT-4, CEM, C8166 and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. In all of these antiviral assay systems, K-12 showed a similar activity (EC50 0.2–0.6 μM). K-12 inhibited Moloney murine sarcoma virus-induced transformation of C3H/3T3 cells with an EC50 of 6.9 μM. Also, K-12 proved inhibitory to herpesvirus saimiri, human cytomegalovirus, varicella-zoster virus and herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (in order of decreasing sensitivity), but was not inhibitory (at subtoxic concentrations) to human herpesvirus type 8 (as evaluated in BCBL-1 cells), vaccinia virus, Sindbis virus, vesicular stomatitis virus, respiratory syncytial virus, Coxsackie virus, Punta Toro virus, parainfluenza virus or reovirus. Time-of-addition experiments and quantitative transactivation bioassays indicated that K-12 inhibits the Tat-mediated transactivation process in HIV-infected cells.

Kaposi's sarcoma is unique in that the lymphadenopathic type of the disease oc curs only in African children; in other parts of the world, childrenâ€”and adultsâ€”do not develop this form of KS. Exciting new information has resulted from electron microscopic studies of KS in tissue cultures and seroepidemiologic analyses. These have revealed that a spe cific association exists between cytomeg alovirus (CMV) and KS. This is interesting, given that the geographical distribution of KS in Equatorial Africa is similar to that of Burkitt's lymphomaâ€”a malignancy closely linked to Epstein-Barr virus (EBv). Our own observations and those of others clearly show a high incidence of second primary cancers, particularly lym phoreticular neoplasms in KSpatients. This close association of lymphoreticular neo plasms and KS suggests that a tumor in ducer or promoter continues to operate in these individuals, and that the etiopatho genic mechanisms of lymphomas and KS are either common to both or are closely linked in a similar manner. That disturbed immunity plays a role in the pathogenesis of KS has been sug gested by reports of patients who devel oped KS while on immunosuppressive ther apies. Abstract:Malassezia spp. which normally colonize on the skin surface, are known as being either the cause or an exacerbating factor in a variety of skin conditions, including pityriasis versicolor, folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. We report here three cases of Akatsuki disease (pomade crust). Scales and crusts were collected from the lesional skin and analyzed using a PCR-based non-culture method. Malassezia microflora in Akatsuki disease was compared to that of healthy subjects and atopic dermatitis patients. Samples were collected from upper and lower eyelids (Case 1), an operation scar (Case 2) and parietal scalp (Case 3). DNA was extracted from the scales and nested PCR was performed using specific primers for each species. Our analysis detected only M. obtusa and M. slooffiae in Cases 1 and 3 and only M. slooffiae in Case 2. Our previous data indicated that while M. globosa, M. restricta and M. sympodialis were common in healthy subjects, the two aforementioned species were rare, suggesting that the presence of M. obtusa and M. slooffiae in the subjects in the present study is correlated to the pathogenesis of Akatsuki disease.
US oil and gas system emissions from nearly one million aerial site measurements

Abstract:As airborne methane surveys of oil and gas systems continue to discover large emissions that are missing from official estimates 1,2,3,4 , the true scope of methane emissions from energy production has yet to be quantified. We integrate approximately one million aerial site measurements into regional emissions inventories for six regions in the USA, comprising 52% of onshore oil and 29% of gas production over 15 aerial campaigns. We construct complete emissions distributions for each, employing empirically grounded simulations to estimate small emissions. Total estimated emissions range from 0.75% (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.65%, 0.84%) of covered natural gas production in a high-productivity, gas-rich region to 9.63% (95% CI 9.04%, 10.39%) in a rapidly expanding, oil-focused region. The six-region weighted average is 2.95% (95% CI 2.79%, 3.14%), or roughly three times the national government inventory estimate 5 . Only 0.05–1.66% of well sites contribute the majority (50–79%) of well site emissions in 11 out of 15 surveys. Ancillary midstream facilities, including pipelines, contribute 18–57% of estimated regional emissions, similarly concentrated in a small number of point sources. Together, the emissions quantified here represent an annual loss of roughly US 9.3 billion annual social cost 6 . Repeated, comprehensive, regional remote-sensing surveys offer a path to detect these low-frequency, high-consequence emissions for rapid mitigation, incorporation into official emissions inventories and a clear-eyed assessment of the most effective emission-finding technologies for a given region.

Methane emissions from oil and gas production sites and their storage tanks in West Virginia

Abstract:A measurement campaign characterized methane and other emissions from 15 natural gas production sites. Sites were surveyed using optical gas imaging (OGI) cameras to identify fugitive and vented emissions, with the methane mass emission rate quantified using a full flow sampler. We present storage tank emissions in context of all site emissions, followed by a detailed account of the former. In total, 224 well pad emission sources at 15 sites were quantified yielding a total emission rate of 57.5 ± 2.89 kg/hr for all sites. Site specific emissions ranged from 0.4 to 10.5 kg/hr with arithmetic and geometric means of 3.8 and 2.2 kg/hr, respectively. The two largest categories of emissions by mass were pneumatic devices (35 kg/hr or ~61% of total) and tanks (14.3 kg/hr or ~25% of total). Produced water and condensate tanks at all sites employed emissions control devices. Nevertheless, tanks may still lose gas via component leaks as observed in this study. The total number of tanks at all sites was 153. One site experienced a major malfunction and direct tank measurements were not conducted due to safety concerns and may have represented a super-emitter as found in other studies. The remaining sites had 143 tanks, which accounted for 42 emissions sources. Leaks on controlled tanks were associated with ERVs, PRVs, and thief hatches. Since measurements represented snapshots-in-time and could only be compared with modeled tank emission data, it was difficult to assess real capture efficiencies accurately. Our estimates suggest that capture efficiency ranged from 63 to 92% for controlled tanks.
Quantification of oil and gas methane emissions in the Delaware and Marcellus basins using a network of continuous tower-based measurements

Abstract:Abstract. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), emissions from oil and gas infrastructure contribute 30 % of all anthropogenic methane (CH4) emissions in the US. Studies in the last decade have shown emissions from this sector to be substantially larger than bottom-up assessments, including the EPA inventory, highlighting both the increased importance of methane emissions from the oil and gas sector in terms of their overall climatological impact and the need for independent monitoring of these emissions. In this study we present continuous monitoring of regional methane emissions from two oil and gas basins using tower-based observing networks. Continuous methane measurements were taken at four tower sites in the northeastern Marcellus basin from May 2015 through December 2016 and five tower sites in the Delaware basin in the western Permian from March 2020 through April 2022. These measurements, an atmospheric transport model, and prior emission fields are combined using an atmospheric inversion to estimate monthly methane emissions in the two regions. This study finds the mean overall emission rate from the Delaware basin during the measurement period to be 146–210 Mg CH4 h−1 (energy-normalized loss rate of 1.1 %–1.5 %, gas-normalized rate of 2.5 %–3.5 %). Strong temporal variability in the emissions was present, with the lowest emission rates occurring during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, a synthetic model–data experiment performed using the Delaware tower network shows that the presence of intermittent sources is not a significant source of uncertainty in monthly quantification of the mean emission rate. In the Marcellus, this study finds the overall mean emission rate to be 19–28 Mg CH4 h−1 (gas-normalized loss rate of 0.30 %–0.45 %), with relative consistency in the emission rate over time. These totals align with aircraft top-down estimates from the same time periods. In both basins, the tower network was able to constrain monthly flux estimates within ±20 % uncertainty in the Delaware and ±24 % uncertainty in the Marcellus. The results from this study demonstrate the ability to monitor emissions continuously and detect changes in the emissions field, even in a basin with relatively low emissions and complex background conditions.

Abstract:Emissions of methane (CH4) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from oil and gas production may have large impacts on air quality and climate change. Methane and VOCs were measured over the Haynesville and Marcellus shale gas plays on board the National Center for Atmospheric Research C-130 and NOAA WP-3D research aircraft in June–July of 2013. We used an eddy covariance technique to measure in situ fluxes of CH4 and benzene from both C-130 flights with high-resolution data (10Hz) and WP-3D flights with low-resolution data (1 Hz). Correlation (R= 0.65) between CH4 and benzene fluxes was observed when flying over shale gas operations, and the enhancement ratio of fluxes was consistent with the corresponding concentration observations. Fluxes calculated by the eddy covariance method show agreement with a mass balance approach within their combined uncertainties. In general, CH4 fluxes in the shale gas regions follow a lognormal distribution, with some deviations for relatively large fluxes (>10μgm 2 s ). Statistical analysis of the fluxes shows that a small number of facilities (i.e., ~10%) are responsible for up to ~40% of the total CH4 emissions in the two regions. We show that the airborne eddy covariance method can also be applied in some circumstances when meteorological conditions do not favor application of the mass balance method. We suggest that the airborne eddy covariance method is a reliable alternative and complementary analysis method to estimate emissions from oil and gas extraction.

Projecting the Temporal Evolution of Methane Emissions from Oil and Gas Production Sites

Abstract:Many recent studies have reported methane emissions from oil and gas production regions, often reporting results as a methane emission intensity (methane emitted as a percentage of natural gas produced or methane produced). Almost all of these studies have been instantaneous snapshots of methane emissions; however, total methane emissions from a production site and the methane emission intensity would be expected to evolve over time. A detailed site-level methane emission estimation model is used to estimate the temporal evolution of methane emissions and the methane emission intensity for a variety of well configurations with and without emission mitigation measures in place. The general pattern predicted is that total emissions decrease over time as production declines. Methane emission intensity shows complex behavior because production-dependent emissions decline at different rates and some emissions do not decline over time. Prototypical uncontrolled wet gas wells can have approximately half of their emissions over a 10 year period occur in the first year; instantaneous wellsite methane emission intensities range over a factor of 3 (0.62-2.00%) in the same period, with a 10 year production weighted-average lifecycle methane emission intensity of 0.79%. Including emission control in the form of a flare can decrease the average lifecycle methane emission intensity to 0.23%. Emissions from liquid unloadings, which are observed in subsets of wells, can increase the lifecycle methane emission intensity by up to a factor of 2-3, between 1.2 and 2.3%, depending on the characteristics of the unloadings. Emissions from well completion flowbacks raise the average lifecycle methane emission intensity from 0.79 to 0.81% for flowbacks with emission controls; for flowbacks with uncontrolled emissions, lifecycle methane emissions increase to 1.26%. Dry gas and oil wells show qualitatively similar temporal behavior but different absolute emission rates.

Abstract:Methane (CH 4 ) emissions from the oil and natural gas (O&G) supply chain have been demonstrated to be one of the largest anthropogenic greenhouse gas emission sources ripe for mitigation to limit near-term climate warming. In recent years, exploration and production (E&P) operators have made public commitments to reducing their greenhouse gas emission intensity, yet little empirical information has been made available in the public domain to allow an accurate comparison of their emissions performance. In this study, we utilize a series of aircraft surveys of large CH 4 point source emissions (∼10 1 –10 4 kg CH 4 hr −1 ) related to O&G production in the Permian Basin to enable comparison of company-level production-sector emission intensities. We calculate gas and total energy production normalized emission intensities for several of the largest E&P operators in the Permian Basin accounting for ∼85% of production within the flight region. We find differences of more than an order of magnitude in emission intensity across operators, with nearly half demonstrating a ⩾50% improvement in performance from 2019 to 2021. With the availability of such publicly attributed emissions data anticipated to increase in the future, we provide methodological insights and cautions to developing operator metrics from future empirical datasets.

Estimating methane emission durations using continuous monitoring systems

Abstract:A small number of large emissions contribute a significant portion of total emitted methane from the oil and gas sector, making them a critical pathway toward emission reduction. These large emissions are often detected by snapshot measurements from aerial or satellite platforms, which have limited ability to characterize emission duration due to the relatively low frequency at which they observe a given source. Duration estimates are necessary for computing the total methane emitted by a given release and will be required for all emissions >100 kg/hr under proposed updates to the EPA's Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP). Continuous monitoring systems (CMS) are a monitoring technology that measure methane concentrations in near-real time and hence can complement snapshot measurements by bounding the duration of detected emissions. However, CMS will not record concentration enhancements during an emission if wind blows emitted methane away from the sensors. We propose a method for estimating emission durations using CMS that accounts for these non-detect times. The method has an average error of 6.3% when evaluated on controlled releases, with 88.5% of estimates within a factor of 2x error from the true duration (i.e., percent error within [-50%, 100%]). We apply the method to a typical production site in the Appalachian Basin and use it to bound the duration of snapshot measurements. We find that failing to account for CMS non-detect times on this site results in underestimated emission durations of up to a factor of 71x (7,000%).

Abstract:Methane emissions from the U.S. oil and natural gas supply chain were estimated by using ground-based, facility-scale measurements and validated with aircraft observations in areas accounting for ~30% of U.S. gas production. When scaled up nationally, our facility-based estimate of 2015 supply chain emissions is 13 ± 2 teragrams per year, equivalent to 2.3% of gross U.S. gas production. This value is ~60% higher than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency inventory estimate, likely because existing inventory methods miss emissions released during abnormal operating conditions. Methane emissions of this magnitude, per unit of natural gas consumed, produce radiative forcing over a 20-year time horizon comparable to the CO<sub>2</sub> from natural gas combustion. Substantial emission reductions are feasible through rapid detection of the root causes of high emissions and deployment of less failure-prone systems.

Abstract:Accurate and comprehensive quantification of oil and gas methane emissions is pivotal in informing effective methane mitigation policies, while also supporting the assessment and tracking of progress towards emissions reduction targets set by governments and industry. While national bottom-up source-level inventories are useful for understanding the sources of methane emissions, they are often unrepresentative across spatial scales, and their reliance on generic emission factors produces underestimations when compared with measurement-based inventories. Here, we compile and analyze previously reported ground-based facility-level methane emissions measurements in the major US oil and gas producing basins and develop representative methane emission profiles for key facility categories in the US oil and gas supply chain, including well sites, natural gas compressor stations, processing plants, crude oil refineries, and pipelines. We then integrate these emissions data with comprehensive spatial data on national oil and gas activity to estimate each facility's mean total methane emissions and uncertainties, from which we develop a mean estimate of national methane emissions, resolved at 0.1° × 0.1° spatial scales (~10 km × 10 km). From this measurement-based methane emissions inventory (EI-ME), we estimate total US national oil/gas methane emissions of 15.7 Tg (95 % confidence interval of 14–18 Tg) in 2021 which is 2.5 times greater than the EPA Greenhouse Gas Inventory. Our estimate represents a mean gas production-normalized methane loss rate of 2.6 %, consistent with recent satellite-based estimates. We find significant variability in both the magnitude and spatial distribution of basin-level methane emissions, ranging from 3–6 % in oil-dominant basins, including the Permian, Bakken, and the Uinta. Additionally, we present and compare novel comprehensive wide-area airborne remote sensing data and results of total area methane emissions and the relative contributions of diffuse and concentrated methane point sources as quantified using MethaneAIR in sub-regions of the Permian and Uinta basins that together indicate diffuse area sources accounting for the majority of total regional oil and gas emissions. Our assessment offers key insights into plausible underlying drivers of basin-to-basin variabilities in oil and gas methane emissions, emphasizing the importance of integrating measurement-based data in developing high-resolution, spatially explicit methane inventories in support of accurate methane assessment, attribution, and mitigation. Measurement of atmospheric pollutants associated with oil and natural gas exploration and production activity in Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest

Abstract:Oil and natural gas exploration and production (E&P) activities generate emissions from diesel engines, compressor stations, condensate tanks, leaks and venting of natural gas, construction of well pads, and well access roads that can negatively impact air quality on both local and regional scales. A mobile, autonomous air quality monitoring laboratory was constructed to collect measurements of ambient concentrations of pollutants associated with oil and natural gas E&P activities. This air-monitoring laboratory was deployed to the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) in northwestern Pennsylvania for a campaign that resulted in the collection of approximately 7 months of data split between three monitoring locations between July 2010 and June 2011. The three monitoring locations were the Kane Experimental Forest (KEF) area in Elk County, which is downwind of the Sackett oilfield; the Bradford Ranger Station (BRS) in McKean County, which is downwind of a large area of historic oil and gas productivity; and the U.S. Forest Service Hearts Content campground (HC) in Warren County, which is in an area relatively unimpacted by oil and gas development and which therefore yielded background pollutant concentrations in the ANF. Concentrations of criteria pollutants ozone and NO2 did not vary significantly from site to site; averages were below National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with oil and natural gas (ethane, propane, butane, pentane) were highly correlated. Applying the conditional probability function (CPF) to the ethane data yielded most probable directions of the sources that were coincident with known location of existing wells and activity. Differences between the two impacted and one background site were difficult to discern, suggesting the that the monitoring laboratory was a great enough distance downwind of active areas to allow for sufficient dispersion with background air such that the localized plumes were not detected. Implications: Monitoring of pollutants associated with oil and natural gas exploration and production activity at three sites within the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) showed only slight site-to-site differences even with one site far removed from these activities. However, the impact was evident not in detection of localized plumes but in regional elevated ethane concentrations, as ethane can be considered a tracer species for oil and natural gas activity. The data presented serve as baseline conditions for evaluation of impacts from future development of Marcellus or Utica shale gas reserves.
Volatile organic compound emissions from the oil and natural gas industry in the Uintah Basin, Utah: oil and gas well pad emissions compared to ambient air composition

Abstract:Abstract. Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with oil and natural gas production in the Uintah Basin, Utah were measured at a ground site in Horse Pool and from a NOAA mobile laboratory with PTR-MS instruments. The VOC compositions in the vicinity of individual gas and oil wells and other point sources such as evaporation ponds, compressor stations and injection wells are compared to the measurements at Horse Pool. High mixing ratios of aromatics, alkanes, cycloalkanes and methanol were observed for extended periods of time and for short-term spikes caused by local point sources. The mixing ratios during the time the mobile laboratory spent on the well pads were averaged. High mixing ratios were found close to all point sources, but gas well pads with collection and dehydration on the well pad were clearly associated with higher mixing ratios than other wells. The comparison of the VOC composition of the emissions from the oil and natural gas well pads showed that gas well pads without dehydration on the well pad compared well with the majority of the data at Horse Pool, and that oil well pads compared well with the rest of the ground site data. Oil well pads on average emit heavier compounds than gas well pads. The mobile laboratory measurements confirm the results from an emissions inventory: the main VOC source categories from individual point sources are dehydrators, oil and condensate tank flashing and pneumatic devices and pumps. Raw natural gas is emitted from the pneumatic devices and pumps and heavier VOC mixes from the tank flashings.

Abstract:Abstract This study evaluates the efficacy of current satellite observing systems to detect methane point sources from typical oil and gas production (O&G) facilities using a novel very high-resolution methane concentration dataset generated using a microscale model. Transport and dispersion of typical methane emissions from seven well pads were simulated and the column enhancements for pseudo satellite pixel sizes of 3, 1, and 0.05 km were examined every second of the 2-h simulations (7200 realizations). The detectability of plumes increased with a pixel resolution, but two orders of magnitude change in emission rates at the surface results only in about 0.4%, 1.6%, and 47.8% enhancement in the pseudo-satellite retrieved methane column at 3, 1, and 0.05 km, respectively. Average methane emission rates estimated by employing the integrated mass enhancement (IME) method to column enhancements at 0.05 km showed an underestimation of the mean emissions by 0.2–6.4%. We show that IME derived satellite-based inversions of methane emissions work well for large persistent emission sources (e.g., super emitters), however, the method is ill-suited to resolve short-term emission fluctuations (< 20 min) in typical well site emissions due to the limitations in satellite detection limits, precision, overpass timing, and pixel resolution.

Abstract:Significance Fugitive methane emissions are thought to often exhibit a heavy-tail distribution (more high-emission sources than expected in a normal distribution), and thus efficient mitigation is possible if we locate the strongest emitters. Here we demonstrate airborne remote measurements of methane plumes at 1- to 3-m ground resolution over the Four Corners region. We identified more than 250 point sources, whose emissions followed a lognormal distribution, a heavy-tail characteristic. The top 10% of emitters explain about half of the total observed point source contribution and ∼1/4 the total basin emissions. This work demonstrates the capability of real-time airborne imaging spectroscopy to perform detection and categorization of methane point sources in extended geographical areas with immediate input for emissions abatement.

Abstract:As oil and gas wells age and the number of wells drilled increases to meet demand, we may see more instances of fugitive soil gas migration (GM) and associated methane (CH4) emissions. Due to the immense spatiotemporal variability of soils and uncertainty in measurement practice, the detection and quantification of GM emissions is a challenge. Two common measurement techniques include the shallow in-soil gas concentration approach and soil surface flux measurements using flux chambers. In this numerical modeling study, both methods were compared to determine how soil texture, environmental conditions (water content, temperature), and CH4 leak rates into the soil profile influenced in-soil CH4 concentration and surface CH4 flux rates. We observed that in-soil CH4 concentration was strongly controlled by soil texture and environmental conditions, whereas surface CH4 flux rates were far less sensitive to those same parameters. Flux measurements were more useful for determining severity of the CH4 leak into the soil and allowed us to differentiate between leak and nonleak scenarios in soils with biological CH4 production which could complicate a GM assessment. We also evaluated field measurements of carbon dioxide from an enhanced oil recovery site to demonstrate how seasonal conditions can influence concentrations of trace gases in shallow soil. Based on our model results and supplemental field measurements, we propose that flux chamber measurements present a more reliable tool to assess the incidence and severity of fugitive GM.

Abstract:We propose a modular framework for methane emission detection, localization, and quantification on oil and gas production sites that uses concentration and wind data from point-in-space continuous monitoring systems. The framework leverages a gradient-based spike detection algorithm to estimate emission start and end times (event detection) and pattern matches simulated and observed concentrations to estimate emission source location (localization) and rate (quantification). The framework was evaluated on a month of non-blinded, single-source controlled releases ranging from 0.50 to 8.25 h in duration and 0.18 to 6.39 kg/h in size. All controlled releases are detected and 82% are localized correctly; 5.5% of estimated events are false positives. For emissions ≤1 kg/h, the framework underestimates the emission rate by −3.9% on average, with 90% of rate estimates falling within a percent difference of [−74.9%, 195.2%] from the true rate. For emissions >1 kg/h, the framework overestimates the emission rate by 4.3% on average, with 90% of rate estimates falling within a percent difference of [−49.3%, 78.8%] from the true rate. Potential uses for the proposed framework include near real time alerting for rapid emission mitigation and emission quantification for use in measurement-informed inventories on production sites.

Abstract:Abstract Background Limited air monitoring studies with long-term measurements during all phases of development and production of natural gas and natural gas liquids have been conducted in close proximity to unconventional natural gas well pads. Objective Conducted in an area of Washington County, Pennsylvania, with extensive Marcellus Shale development, this study investigated whether operations at an unconventional natural gas well pad may contribute to ambient air concentrations of potential health concern at a nearby school campus. Methods Almost 2 years of air monitoring for fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was performed at three locations between 1000 and 2800 feet from the study well pad from December 2016 to October 2018. PM 2.5 was measured continuously at one of the three sites using a beta attenuation monitor, while 24-h stainless steel canister samples were collected every 6 days at all sites for analysis of 58 VOCs. Results Mean PM 2.5 concentrations measured during the different well activity periods ranged from 5.4 to 9.5 μg/m 3 , with similar levels and temporal changes as PM 2.5 concentrations measured at a regional background location. The majority of VOCs were either detected infrequently or not at all, with measurements for a limited number of VOCs indicating the well pad to be a source of small and transient contributions. Significance All measurement data of PM 2.5 and 58 VOCs, which reflect the cumulative contributions of emissions from the study well pad and other local/regional air pollutant sources (e.g., other well pads), were below health-based air comparison values, and thus do not provide evidence of either 24-hour or long-term air quality impacts of potential health concern at the school.

Abstract:Summary With atmospheric methane concentrations rising and spurring increased social concern, there is a renewed focus in the oil and gas industry on methane emission monitoring and control. In 2019, a methane emission survey at a bp asset west of Shetland was conducted using a closed-cavity methane spectrometer mounted onboard a long-endurance fixed-wing uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV). This flight represents the first methane emissions survey of an offshore facility with a miniature methane spectrometer onboard a UAV with subsequent flights performed. A small laser spectrometer was modified from an open-cavity system to a closed-cavity onboard the aircraft and yielded in-flight detection limits (3 seconds) of 1,065 ppb methane above background for the 2019/2020 sensor version and 150 ppb for the 2021 sensor versions. Through simulation, the minimum detection limits of sensors in mass flow rate were determined to be 50 kg/h for the 2019/2020 campaign and 2.5 kg/h for the 2021 campaigns, translating to an obtainable measurement for 23% and 82% of assets reporting higher than 1 kg/h according to the 2019 Environmental Emissions Monitoring System (EEMS) data set, respectively. To operationalize the approach, a simulation tool for flight planning was developed using a Gaussian plume model and a scaled coefficient of variation to invoke expected methane concentration fluctuations at short time intervals. Two methods were developed to calculate offshore facility-level emission rates from the geolocated methane concentration data acquired during the emission surveys. Furthermore, a Gaussian plume simulator was developed to predict plume behavior and aid in error analysis. These methods are under evaluation, but all allow for the rapid processing (<24 hours) of results upon landing the aircraft. Additional flights were conducted in 2020 and 2021 with bp and several UK North Sea operators through a Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC)-funded project, resulting in a total of 18 methane emission survey flights to 11 offshore assets between 2019 and 2021. The 2019 flight, and subsequent 2020–2021 flights, demonstrated the potential of the technology to derive facility-level emission rates to verify industry emission performance and data.
