Abstract:We consider the modified Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (mSQG) equation on the 2D torus $\mathbb{T}^2$, perturbed by multiplicative transport noise. The equation admits the white noise measure on $\mathbb{T}^2$ as the invariant measure. We first prove the existence of white noise solutions to the stochastic equation via the method of point vortex approximation, then, under a suitable scaling limit of the noise, we show that the solutions converge weakly to the unique stationary solution of the dissipative mSQG equation driven by space-time white noise. The weak uniqueness of the latter equation is also proved by following Gubinelli and Perkowski's approach in \cite{GP-18}.

Abstract:We study the surface quasi-geostrophic equation driven by a generic additive noise process $W$. By means of convex integration techniques, we establish existence of weak solutions whenever the stochastic convolution $z$ associated with $W$ is well defined and fulfills certain regularity constraints. Quintessentially, we show that the so constructed solutions to the non-linear equation are controlled by $z$ in a linear fashion. This allows us to deduce further properties of the so constructed solutions, without relying on structural probabilistic properties such as Gaussianity, Markovianity or a martingale property of the underlying noise $W$.

Abstract:We establish that global-in-time existence and non-uniqueness of probabilistically strong solutions to the three dimensional Navier–Stokes system driven by space-time white noise. In this setting, solutions are expected to have space regularity of at most for any . Consequently, the convective term is ill-defined analytically and probabilistic renormalization is required. Up until now, only local well-posedness has been known. With the help of paracontrolled calculus we decompose the system in a way which makes it amenable to convex integration. By a careful analysis of the regularity of each term, we develop an iterative procedure which yields global non-unique probabilistically strong paracontrolled solutions. Our result applies to any divergence free initial condition in , , and also implies non-uniqueness in law.

Abstract:We consider the momentum formulation of the two-dimensional surface quasi-geostrophic equations forced by random noise, of both additive and linear multiplicative types. For any prescribed deterministic function under some conditions, we construct solutions to each system whose energy is the fixed function. Consequently, we prove non-uniqueness of almost sure Markov selections of suitable class of weak solutions associated to the momentum surface quasi-geostrophic equations in both cases of noise.

The proof relies on an energy estimate which in turn builds on a dynamic high-low frequency decomposition and tools from paracontrolled calculus. Notably, our method does not rely on any explicit knowledge of the invariant measure to the SPDE, hence the perturbation $$ \zeta $$ ζ is not restricted to the Cameron–Martin space of the noise, and the initial condition may be anticipative. Abstract:We study the generalised 2D surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation, where the active scalar is given by a fractional power α of Laplacian applied to the stream function. This includes the 2D SQG and Euler equations as special cases. Using Poincaré’s successive approximation to higher α-derivatives of the active scalar, we derive a variational equation for describing perturbations in the generalized SQG equation. In particular, in the limit α → 0, an asymptotic equation is derived on a stretched time variable τ = αt, which unifies equations in the family near α = 0. The successive approximation is also discussed at the other extreme of the 2D Euler limit α = 2–0. Numerical experiments are presented for both limits. We consider whether the solution behaves in a more singular fashion, with more effective nonlinearity, when α is increased. Two competing effects are identified: the regularizing effect of a fractional inverse Laplacian (control by conservation) and cancellation by symmetry (nonlinearity depletion). Near α = 0 (complete depletion), the solution behaves in a more singular fashion as α increases. Near α = 2 (maximal control by conservation), the solution behave in a more singular fashion, as α decreases, suggesting that there may be some α in [0, 2] at which the solution behaves in the most singular manner. We also present some numerical results of the family for α = 0.5, 1, and 1.5. On the original time t, the H1 norm of θ generally grows more rapidly with increasing α. However, on the new time τ, this order is reversed. On the other hand, contour patterns for different α appear to be similar at fixed τ, even though the norms are markedly different in magnitude. Finally, point-vortex systems for the generalized SQG family are discussed to shed light on the above problems of time scale.

Non-uniqueness in law of the surface quasi-geostrophic equations: the case of linear multiplicative noise

Abstract:The momentum formulation of the surface quasi-geostrophic equations consists of two nonlinear terms, besides the pressure term, one of which cannot be written in a divergence form. When the anti-divergence operator is applied to such nonlinear terms, in general, one cannot take advantage of the differentiation operator of order minus one unless the nonlinear terms are compactly supported away from the origin in Fourier frequency. Moreover, the two nonlinear terms of the momentum surface quasi-geostrophic equations are one derivative more singular than that of the Navier-Stokes equations. Upon employing the convex integration technique to the random partial differential equations corresponding to the momentum surface quasi-geostrophic equations forced by linear multiplicative noise, these issues create various difficulties, unseen in the deterministic scenario and even in the case the noise is additive. By making a key observation in case the solution is a shear flow and rewriting the difficult stochastic commutator error in terms of the oscillation error, we prove its non-uniqueness in law.

Regularization by rough Kraichnan noise for the generalised SQG equations

Abstract:We consider the generalised Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (gSQG) equations in $\mathbb R^2$ with parameter $\beta\in (0,1)$, an active scalar model interpolating between SQG ($\beta=1$) and the 2D Euler equations ($\beta=0$) in vorticity form. Existence of weak $(L^1\cap L^p)$-valued solutions in the deterministic setting is known, but their uniqueness is open. We show that the addition of a rough Stratonovich transport noise of Kraichnan type regularizes the PDE, providing strong existence and pathwise uniqueness of solutions for initial data $\theta_0\in L^1\cap L^p$, for suitable values $p\in[2,\infty]$ related to the regularity degree $\alpha$ of the noise and the singularity degree $\beta$ of the velocity field; in particular, we can cover any $\beta\in (0,1)$ for suitable $\alpha$ and $p$ and we can reach a suitable ("critical") threshold. The result also holds in the presence of external forcing $f\in L^1_t (L^1\cap L^p)$ and solutions are shown to depend continuously on the data of the problem; furthermore, they are well approximated by vanishing viscosity and regular approximations.

Non-unique Ergodicity for the 2D Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations with Derivative of Space-Time White Noise

Abstract:We prove existence of infinitely many stationary solutions as well as ergodic stationary solutions for the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}^2$ \begin{align*} \dif u+÷(u\otimes u)\dif t+\nabla p\dif t&=\Delta u\dif t + (-\Delta)^{\fa/2}\dif B_t,\ \ \ \ ÷u=0,\notag \end{align*} driven by derivative of space-time white noise, where $\fa\in[0,\frac13)$. In this setting, the solutions are not function valued and probabilistic renormalization is required to give a meaning to the equations. Finally, we show that the stationary distributions are not Gaussian distribution $N(0,\frac12(-\Delta)^{\fa-1})$. The proof relies on a time-dependent decomposition and a stochastic version of the convex integration method which provides uniform moment bounds in some function spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we systematically study the existence, asymptotic behaviors, uniqueness, and nonlinear orbital stability of traveling-wave solutions with small propagation speeds for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) equation. Firstly we obtain the existence of a new family of global solutions via the variational method. Secondly we show the uniqueness of maximizers under our variational setting. Thirdly by using the variational framework, the uniqueness of maximizers and a concentration-compactness principle we establish some stability theorems. Moreover, after a suitable transformation, these solutions constitute the desingularization of traveling point vortex pairs.

Probabilistic Approaches to The Energy Equality in Forced Surface Quasi-Geostrophic Equations

Abstract:We explore probabilistic approaches to the deterministic energy equality for the forced Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (SQG) equation on a torus. First, we prove the zero-noise dynamical large deviations for a corresponding stochastic SQG equation, where the lower bound matches the upper bound on a certain closure of the weak-strong uniqueness class for the deterministic forced SQG equation. Furthermore, we show that the energy equality for the deterministic SQG equation holds on arbitrary time-reversible subsets of the domain, where we match the upper bound and the lower bound. Conversely, the violation of the deterministic energy equality breaks the lower bound of large deviations. These results extend the existing techniques in Gess, Heydecker, and the second author \cite{<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2311.02223" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.02223">arXiv:2311.02223</a>} to generalized Sobolev spaces with negative indices. Finally, we provide an analysis of the restricted quasi-potential and prove a conditional equivalence compared to the rate function of large deviations for the Gaussian distribution. This suggests a potential connection between non-Gaussian large deviations in equilibrium for the stochastic SQG equation and the open problem regarding the uniqueness of the deterministic SQG equation.

Abstract:Abstract We investigate the geometry of a family of equations in two dimensions which interpolate between the Euler equations of ideal hydrodynamics and the inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation. This family can be realised as geodesic equations on groups of diffeomorphisms. We show precisely when the corresponding Riemannian exponential map is non-linear Fredholm of index 0. Abstract:For standard inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation, it is well-known that H2(R2) is the borderline space when we consider the corresponding local well-posedness. In this paper, we study a new generalized SQG equation with the singular velocity u=∇⊥Λ−2+α(log⁡(I−Δ))μθ, 1<α<2,μ>0. We find the borderline space is H1+α(R2), which is consistent with the standard SQG equation when α=1, μ=0. This result can be seen as an extensive work of [3], which depends on a new observation.

Illposedness via degenerate dispersion for generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations with singular velocities

Abstract:We prove strong nonlinear illposedness results for the generalized SQG equation $$\partial_t \theta + \nabla^\perp \Gamma[\theta] \cdot \nabla \theta = 0 $$ in any sufficiently regular Sobolev spaces, when $\Gamma$ is a singular in the sense that its symbol satisfies $|\Gamma(\xi)|\to\infty$ as $|\xi|\to\infty$ with some mild regularity assumptions. The key mechanism is degenerate dispersion, i.e., the rapid growth of frequencies of solutions around certain shear states, and the robustness of our method allows one to extend linear and nonlinear illposedness to fractionally dissipative systems, as long as the order of dissipation is lower than that of $\Gamma$. Our illposedness results are completely sharp in view of various existing wellposedness statements as well as those from our companion paper. Key to our proofs is a novel construction of degenerating wave packets for the class of linear equations $$\partial_t \phi + ip(t,X,D)\phi = 0$$ where $p(t,X,D)$ is a pseudo-differential operator which is self-adjoint in $L^2$, degenerate, and dispersive. Degenerating wave packets are approximate solutions to the above linear equation with spatial and frequency support localized at $(X(t),\Xi(t))$, which are solutions to the bicharacteristic ODE system associated with $p(t,x,\xi)$. These wave packets explicitly show degeneration as $X(t)$ approaches a point where $p$ vanishes, which in particular allows us to prove illposedness in topologies finer than $L^2$. While the equation for the wave packet can be formally obtained from a Taylor expansion of the symbol near $\xi=\Xi(t)$, the difficult part is to rigorously control the error in sufficiently long timescales, which is obtained by sharp estimates for not only degenerating wave packets but also for oscillatory integrals which naturally appear in the error estimate.

Abstract:Journal of Algorithms &Computational Technology, Volume 17, Issue , January-December 2023. We present a numerical method for approximating the two-dimensional surface quasi-geostrophic equation. We first reformulate the equation into an equivalent system by using the scalar auxiliary variable approach. Then we propose first-order and second-order discretization schemes for solving the new surface quasi-geostrophic system in time. Furthermore, we prove that both of these schemes based on the scalar auxiliary variable approach satisfy an unconditionally energy stability property. Since the method gives two linear equations with constant coefficients in each time step. We have an efficient approach and accurate for solving these spacial fractional diffusion equations. Ample numerical experiments are carried out to validate the correctness of these schemes and their accuracy for inviscid problems and the problems with small viscosity.

Abstract:We study the two-dimensional surface quasi-geostrophic equation on a bounded domain with a smooth boundary. Motivated by the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and previous results in the entire space $\mathbb R^2$, we demonstrate that the uniqueness of the mild solution holds in $L^2$. For the proof, we provide a method for handling fractional Laplacians in nonlinear problems, and develop an approach to derive second-order derivativesfor the nonlinear term involving fractional derivatives of the Dirichlet Laplacian.
