Abstract:Objective To analyze the prevalence and clinical features of cytomegalovirus (CMV)infection in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).Methods Patients with SLE in Peking University Third Hospital from 2013 to 2015 and age and sex matched healthy controls were enrolled.All patients were detected for CMV antibody,CMV DNA and CMV PP65 in the blood.The prevalence of CMV infection and the clinical characteristics were analyzed using Chi-square test.Results Altogether 349 SLE patients and 209 healthy controls were enrolled.In SLE group,the positive rate of CMV IgG was 90.3％ (315/349),which was similar to that of the control group,while the positive rate of CMV IgM was 8.0％ (28/349),which wassignificantly higher than controls 1.4％(3/209) (x2=10.811,P=0.001),and the active CMV infection rate was 69.1％(241/349).Those in the active phase of SLE were more likely to have active CMV infection when compared with those in remission [75.4％(93/256) vs 51.6％(48/93),x2=18.049,P＜0.01].The percentage [43.2％(104/241)] of severe patients in those with active CMV infection was much higher than that in those without CMV infection 9.2％(10/108) (x2=38.953,P＜0.01).Those SLE patients had active CMV infection were clinically more severe and the most common clinical manifestation were proteinuria/hemoturia,cytopenia and fever.Conclusion In SLE patients,the positive rate of CMV IgM is significantly higher than healthy control and the prevalence of active CMV infection is high,especially in those at active disease.Those with active CMV infection are clinically more severe but have no features of active CMV infection,which indicates that the CMV infection might be a trigger of SLE activity.
Predictive significance of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte and platelet-to-lymphocyte for cytomegalovirus infection in infants less than 3 months: A retrospective study

Abstract:Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of the hematological parameters in the identification of human cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in infants less than 3 months. Methods A single-center, observational study of infants with CMV infection was conducted retrospectively. Routine blood parameters were analyzed in CMV-infected infants and controls with no differences of birthweight, sex, gestational age at birth, and date of admission. Furthermore, receiver-operating curve was used to assess the predictive value of the hematological parameters for CMV infection. Results One hundred ninety cases with CMV infection were studied retrospectively. Compared with the control group, there were significant differences in the white blood cell count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, platelet count, hemoglobin, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte (LMR) for the patients with CMV infection (all p < 0.001). The best predicted values for CMV infection based on the area under the curve (AUC) were NLR and PLR with the optimal cut-off value of 0.28 and 65.36. NLR-PLR score of 0, 1, or 2 based on an elevated NLR (>0.28), an elevated PLR (>65.36), or both. NLR-PLR score for CMV infection prediction yielded higher AUC values than NLR or PLR alone (0.760 vs. 0.689, 0.689; p < 0.001). Conclusions The NLR combined with PLR is potentially useful as a predictor of CMV infection in infants less than 3 months.
Dysregulated T Cell Activation and Aberrant Cytokine Expression Profile in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Abstract:Accumulating evidence indicates a critical role for T cells and relevant cytokines in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, the specific contribution of T cells together with the related circulating cytokines in disease pathogenesis and organ involvement is still not clear. In the current study, we investigated relevant molecule expressions and cytokine levels in blood samples from 49 SLE patients and 22 healthy control subjects. The expression of HLA-DR and costimulatory molecules on T cells was evaluated by flow cytometry. Concentrations of serum C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibody, total lgG, complement 3, and complement 4 were measured. Serum cytokines and chemokines were measured by a cytometric bead array assay. Elevated frequencies of HLA-DR+ T cells and ICOS+ T cells were observed in SLE patients with positive anti-dsDNA antibodies compared with those in healthy controls (P < 0.001). The expression of HLA-DR+ T cells was positively correlated with SLEDAI (r = 0.15, P < 0.01). Furthermore, levels of serum IL-6, MCP-1, TNFRI, IL-10, IL-12, and CCL20 were higher in SLE patients compared with healthy controls. In addition, patients with hematologic manifestations displayed elevated frequencies of HLA-DR+ T cells and ICOS+ T cells. Patients with renal manifestations had a decreased frequency of TIGIT+ T cells. These results suggested a dysregulated T cell activity and cytokine expression profiles in SLE subjects. We also developed a chemokine and cytokine profiling strategy to predict the activity of SLE, which has clinical implication for better monitoring the flares and remission during the course of SLE and for assessing therapeutic interventions.

Abstract:Four tick-borne diseases (TBDs), anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease (LD), and Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), are endemic in Illinois. The prevalence of human and canine cases of all four TBDs rose over the study period with significant differences in geographic distribution within the state. Among human cases, there were associations between cases of RMSF and LD and total forest cover, seasonal precipitation, average mean temperature, racial-ethnic groups, and gender. Estimated annual prevalence of three canine TBDs exceeded human TBD cases significantly in each region. There was concordance in the number of human and canine cases by county of residence, in annual prevalence trends, and in time of year at which they were diagnosed. To account for multiple environmental risk factors and to facilitate early diagnosis of cases, integrated surveillance systems must be developed and communication between veterinarians, physicians, and public health agencies must be improved.
T Cell Responses without Regulating Effector TLR Signaling Fine-Tunes Anti-Influenza B

Abstract:Inﬂuenza is a ssRNA virus that has been responsible for widespread morbidity and mortality; however, the innate immunological mechanisms that drive the adaptive anti-inﬂuenza immune response in vivo are yet to be fully elucidated. TLRs are pattern recognition receptors that bind evolutionarily conserved pathogen-associated molecular patterns, induce dendritic cell maturation, and consequently aid the development of effective immune responses. We have examined the role of TLRs in driving effective T and B cell responses against inﬂuenza virus. We found TLR3 and its associated adapter molecule, Toll/IL-R domain-containing adaptor-inducing IFN- (cid:1) , did not play a role in the development of CD4 (cid:2) or CD8 (cid:2) T cell responses against inﬂuenza virus, nor did they inﬂuence inﬂuenza-speciﬁc B cell responses. Surprisingly, TLR7 and MyD88 also played negligible roles in T cell activation and effector function upon infection with inﬂuenza virus; however, their signaling was critical for regulating anti-inﬂuenza B cell Ab isotype switching. The induction of appropriate anti-inﬂuenza humoral responses involved stimulation of TLRs on B cells directly and TLR-induced production of IFN- (cid:3) , which acted to reduce IgG1 and increase IgG2a/c class switching. Notably, direct TLR signaling on B cells or T cell help through the CD40-CD40L interaction was sufﬁcient to support B cell proliferation and IgG1 production, whereas IFN- (cid:3) was critical for ﬁne-tuning the nature of the isotype switch. Taken together, these data reveal that TLR signaling is not required for anti-inﬂuenza T cell responses, but through both direct and indirect means orchestrates appropriate anti-inﬂuenza
Characterisation of a human antibody that potentially links cytomegalovirus infection with systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract:Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a ubiquitous herpesvirus that has been linked with the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Thus far, molecular mimicry has been implicated as the principal mechanism that explains this association. In this study, we characterise a potential alternative process whereby HCMV contributes to SLE. In a cohort of SLE patients, we show a significant association between HCMV infection and SLE through a human antibody response that targets UL44. UL44 is an obligate nuclear-resident, non-structural viral protein vital for HCMV DNA replication. The intracellular nature of this viral protein complicates its targeting by the humoral response - the mechanism remains unresolved. To characterise this response, we present a thorough molecular analysis of the first human monoclonal antibody specific for UL44 derived from a HCMV seropositive donor. This human antibody immunoprecipitates UL44 from HCMV-infected cells together with known nuclear-resident SLE autoantigens - namely, nucleolin, dsDNA and ku70. We also show that UL44 is redistributed to the cell surface during virus-induced apoptosis as part of a complex with these autoantigens. This phenomenon represents a potential mechanism for the bystander presentation of SLE autoantigens to the humoral arm of our immune system under circumstances that favour a break in peripheral tolerance.
Association Between Mannose-Binding Lectin Gene Polymorphism and Pediatric Cytomegalovirus Infection.

Abstract:Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is an important constituent of the human innate immune system, and can bind to a wide range of pathogens, including viruses such as influenza A, HIV, herpes simplex 2, and SARS-CoV. MBL deficiency results from single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in exon 1, and the promoter region of the human MBL2 gene has been found to be associated with susceptibility to a number of infections. However, studies on the interactions between MBL and CMV infection are limited. In this study, we investigated 104 children suffering from HCMV infection, in an effort to find any association between MBL and HCMV infection of children in China. We analyzed the genotypes of 104 HCMV patients and 105 healthy controls, and investigated the distributions of polymorphisms at -550(H/L), -221(Y/X), and +4(P/Q), together with their structural variants. Although there was no significant difference in the distribution of B alleles between HCMV patients and healthy controls, the frequencies of the high-MBL-level related genotype of YA type in HCMV patients were significantly lower than those seen in healthy controls, while low-level related genotypes of XB type were more common in HCMV patients. In addition, CMV-DNA quantification revealed higher viral loads of the XB type in HCMV patients. Thus we can speculate that as an acute response protein and a pattern-recognition molecule of the innate immune system, MBL may play a role in protecting against HCMV infection in children, and MBL gene mutations may be a significant risk factor for the development of infantile HCMV infection.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical traits and consequences of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) complicated by active cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. Methods: This retrospective review involved the examination of medical records for patients diagnosed with SLE who had an active CMV infection at the time of their discharge from Peking Union Medical College Hospital between June 2016 and December 2022. The consistency between plasma CMV deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) viral load and pp65 antigenemia was analyzed using the chi-square test. Related factors for CMV disease in SLE complicated by active CMV infection patients were analyzed by univariate analysis and multivariable stepwise logistic regression. Cox hazards regression analysis was used to determine predictors for all-cause mortality and CMV recurrence within 3 months. Results: A total of 206 patients were enrolled in this study. Of the 123 patients who were detected with both plasma CMV DNA viral load and pp65 antigenemia within an interval not exceeding 72 h, the consistency between plasma CMV DNA viral load and pp65 antigenemia was not good (Kappa = −0.304, p < 0.001). Plasma CMV DNA viral load ≥ 1,600 copies/mL [odds ratio (OR) 4.411, 95% CI 1.871–10.402, p = 0.001], current glucocorticoids dose (equivalent to prednisolone) ≥60 mg/d (OR 2.155, 95% CI 1.071–4.334, p = 0.031), and elevated alanine transaminase (OR 3.409, 95% CI 1.563–7.435, p = 0.002) were significant clinical clues indicating CMV disease in SLE. Multivariable Cox hazards regression analysis showed that CMV organ involvement [hazard ratio (HR) 47.222, 95% CI 5.621–396.689, p < 0.001], SLE multi-system involvement (HR 1.794, 95% CI 1.029–3.128, p = 0.039), and elevated hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) (HR 5.767, 95% CI 1.190–27.943, p = 0.030) were independent risk factors for 3-month all-cause mortality. CMV organ involvement (HR 3.404, 95% CI 1.074–10.793, p = 0.037) was an independent risk factor for CMV recurrence within 3 months. Conclusion: In SLE patients, plasma CMV DNA viral load seemed to have a higher value in the diagnosis of CMV disease; patients with CMV organ involvement, SLE multi-system involvement, and elevated hsCRP might have a higher risk of 3-month all-cause mortality; and patients with CMV organ involvement might have a higher risk of CMV recurrence within 3 months.

Abstract:Viral infections are known to induce the occurrence and pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Previous studies have indicated a possible relationship between SLE and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection and have attributed HCMV to be associated with various autoantibodies; however, these studies were constrained by variations in sample size and potential selection bias. Abstract:Objective To investigate the action of HCMV IgG antibodies avidity index in SLE patients.Methods HCMV-IgM and HCMV-IgG of 122 SLE patients,85 AD-except-SLE patients,and 137 normal controls were studied by ELISA essay,and HCMV-IgG antibodies avidity index of IgG positive subjects were measured.Results The present study showed that in SLE patients,102 subjects were found HCMV-IgM negative and HCMV-IgG positive,6 subjects were found HCMV-IgM negative and HCMV-IgG negative,and 14 subjects were found HCMV-IgM positive and HCMV-IgG positive.On the contrary,in AD-except-SLE patients,80 subjects were found HCMV-IgM negative and HCMV-IgG positive,4 subjects were found HCMV-IgM negative and HCMV-IgG negative,and only one subject was found HCMV-IgM positive and HCMV-IgG positive.In normal controls,128 subjects were found HCMV-IgM negative and HCMV-IgG positive,and 9 subjects were found HCMV-IgM negative and HCMV-IgG negative.After detecting the HCMV-IgG antibodies avidity index in subjects with HCMV-IgG positive,we discovered that in all SLE patients,8.2% were assessed as primary active infection,11.5% were assessed as secondary active infection,and 75.4% were assessed as latent infection.Therefore,the incidence of active HCMV infection in SLE patients was higher than in other AD(not including SLE) patients or normal controls.Conclusion Taken together,compared to normal controls and non-SLE autoimmune patients,SLE patients showed a higher proportion of active HCMV infection.Thus,the onset of SLE is closely correlated with HCMV activation.
Association of Serum Vitamin D with Active Human Cytomegalovirus Infections in Chinese Children with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract:Vitamin D (VD) plays an important role in infectious and autoimmune diseases. We investigated the association between the serum VD levels and active human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infections in pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. From January 2015 to June 2021, 120 children were diagnosed with SLE, and 100 healthy children were enrolled. The serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels were detected using ELISA. The serum anti-HCMV IgM antibodies were measured by a chemiluminescence immunoassay. Comparisons of the 25(OH)D levels between SLE patients and healthy children were performed, as well as subgroups of SLE patients with or without active HCMV infections. The serum 25(OH)D levels of SLE patients were significantly lower than those of healthy children (35.3 ± 12.9 vs. 49.3 ± 15.3, P < 0.001). The VD deficiency ratio was higher in SLE patients (89.2%) than that in healthy children (52.0%). The serum 25(OH)D levels in the positive anti-HCMV IgM group were significantly lower than those of the negative anti-HCMV IgM group (30.6 ± 12.3 vs. 38.2 ± 12.5, P < 0.001). A severe VD deficiency ratio was significantly higher in HCMV-IgM(+)-SLE patients (42.2%) than that in HCMV-IgM(-)-SLE patients (13.3%). This study suggested that the serum VD level is associated with active HCMV infections in pediatric SLE patients.

Abstract:Background : Cytomegalovirus (CMV) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, it is not clear whether the anti-CMV treatment has an impact on the prognosis of SLE patients with CMV infection. We aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics and prognosis of CMV infection in pediatric SLE (pSLE) and to evaluate the effect of anti-CMV treatment on pSLE outcome. Methods: A retrospective study including 146 pSLEfrom 2012 to 2021 was conducted. CMV-positive and CMV-negative groupswere compared by univariate analysis and stepwise logistic multiple regression to analyze the clinical characteristics of CMV infection in pSLE. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to model the longitudinal dynamics of pSLE disease activity with or without CMV infection and anti-CMV treatment. Results : The CMV infection rate was 74.7% (109/146) in this pSLE cohort. CMV-positive pSLE patients were more likely to present positive anti-dsDNA antibody, hypocomplementemia, high SLEDAI-2K score and musculoskeletal involvement ( P < 0.05). Survival analysis showed that CMV-positive pSLE patients were more prone to disease flare and poorer outcomes. GEE modeling indicated that CMV phosphoprotein 65 (pp65) titers were positively correlated with SLEDAI-2K, and anti-CMV treatment could better reduce pSLE activity than non-treatment ( P < 0.05). Conclusions : CMV infection is highly prevalent among pSLE patients. Positive anti-dsDNA antibody, hypocomplementemia, high SLEDAI-2K score and musculoskeletal involvement were significant clinical clues indicating CMV infections in pSLE. CMV infection is correlated with higher disease activity and poorer outcome. Anti-CMV treatment can reduce disease activity and flares.
Clinical Analysis of Patients With New-Onset Untreated Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Complicated With Cytomegalovirus Infection Short Title: Untreated SLE With CMV Infection

Abstract:Abstract We investigated the clinical characteristics and short-term prognosis of patients with new-onset, untreated systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) complicated with active cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. Of the 86 patients enrolled in this study, 60 had active CMV infection. The proportions of patients with fever (65.0% versus 38.5%, P = 0.041), hematologic system involvement (80.0% versus 57.7%, P = 0.032), kidney involvement (50.0% versus 26.9%, P = 0.047), anti-double-stranded-DNA antibody positivity (51.7% versus 26.9%, P = 0.034), and severe disease activity (SLEDAI-2000 ≥ 15 points; 58.3% versus 30.8%, P = 0.019) were significantly higher, whereas serum C3 complement levels (0.48 ± 0.22 versus 0.60 ± 0.25, P = 0.032) were significantly lower in the CMV+ group than in the CMV- group, respectively. Initial SLE treatment, clinical features, laboratory data, and SLE treatment did not differ at 3- and 6-month follow-ups. In patients with CMV+, there were no significant differences in clinical features, laboratory data, SLE treatment, and laboratory index at 3-month follow-up between patients with or without antiviral treatment. These findings provided important insights into the characteristics of new-onset SLE complicated with active CMV infection and showed that antiviral treatment may have affect short-term prognosis.
Early diagnosis and monitoring of active HCMV infection in children with systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the prevalence and features of active human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection in children with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and evaluate the diagnostic value of the HCMV using antigenemia assay, serum polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and serology test. Methods: Twenty-one SLE children undergoing immunosuppressive therapy were enrolled in this study. Immunofluorescence assay, PCR and serology tests were used to determine HCMV pp65 and p72 antigens in leukocytes, HCMV DNA in sera, and HCMV specific IgM and IgG antibodies, respectively. As a control group, twenty-one immunocompetent children with skeletal malformation were involved in this study. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test (Systat, USA), P values less than 0.05 were considered significant. Results: Active HCMV infection was diagnosed in 28.6% (6/21) of SLE patients, with none in the control group; the difference between the two groups was significant (P = 0.027). Two out of 6 SLE patients developed active HCMV infection before immunosuppressive therapy and the remaining 4 patients developed SLE after immunosuppressive therapy. Among the 21 SLE children, HCMV pp65 antigenemia was detected in 5 patients, p72 antigenemia in 3 patients, serum HCMV DNA in 9 patients, serum HCMV-specific IgM in 2 patients, and IgG in 19 patients. The sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of active HCMV infection were 83.3% and 100%, respectively for pp65 antigenemia; 50% and 100% for p72 antigenemia; 100% and 80% for serum PCR; 33.3% and 100% for HCMV IgM serology; 50% and 100% for HCMV IgG serology. Conclusions: Compared with the control group, active HCMV infection is much more frequent in SLE children, and can occur before treatment with immunosuppressive agents, but most often occur after immunosuppressive therapy. In comparison with the other techniques used in this study, the pp65 antigenemia assay seems to be a better method for the early diagnosis and monitoring of active HCMV infection in children with SLE.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the potential role of human cytomegalovirus lower matrix phosphoprotein 65（HCMV-pp65） in murine systemic lupus erythematosus（SLE）.Methods:The prokaryotic plasmid pET-28b-pp65 was constructed to express the HCMVpp65 protein.BXSB mice and C57BL/6 mice were inoculated with pp65 eukarvotic plasmid pcDNA3.0-pp65 intramuscularly 5 times at 2-week intervals,and then the blood of the mice was subsequently collected via the retro-orbital vein.Indirect ELISAs were used to evaluate the concentration of anti-pp65 immunoglobulin G,anti-double-stranded DNA and antinuclear antibodies.lnterleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α were also determined by competitive ELISA.At the same time,3 major SLE-related circulating microRNAs were examined by quantitative RT-PCR.Results:The early production of autoantibodies was observed in pp65-immunized male BXSB as well as C57BL/6 mice.Overexpression of interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-a were detected in pp65-immunized male BXSB mice.Quantitative RT-PCR analyses showed that three SLE related microRNAs（microRNA-126,microRNA-125 a,and microRKA-146a） were dovvnrcgulatcd in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of pp65-immunizcd mice.Conclusions:Our findings indicate that HCMV-pp65 immunization strongly triggers the development and progression of" SLE-like disease in both BXSB and C57BL/6 mice,which indicates that the immune responses induced by HCMV-pp65 may be involved in the development of SLE.

Abstract:Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease, and the etiology is still unclear. Some studies have indicated that viral infection might contribute to the development of SLE. Methods: A total of 105 individuals with SLE and 110 matched healthy controls were tested for EBV-specific DNA fragments in peripheral blood monocytes by PCR-Southern blotting. The expression of EBV-encoded genes was determined by RT-PCR and Southern blotting in EBV-positive patients. Serum EBV-specific IgM antibody was determined by ELISA. HHV-6 DNA in peripheral blood monocytes of those SLE patients and normal controls was tested by nested PCR. Results: Statistical analysis showed that the EBV-positive rate of SLE patients was significantly higher than that of the control group (χ2 = 87.329, P = 0), while the difference in the HHV-6-positive rate between the two groups was not significant (P > 0.05). An association of EBV and HHV-6 positivity in SLE patients was found (P = 0, r = 0.38). The EBV IgM level was significantly higher in SLE patients than in healthy controls (χ2 = 25.184, P = 0). Forty-two of the 75 EBV DNA-positive specimens were positive for EBNA2 mRNA, and an association between EBV EBNA2 mRNA and anti-Sm antibody positivity was found (P = 0, r = 0.409). LMP1 mRNA was positive in 2 SLE patients with active phase, and no LMP2A mRNA expression was detected in EBV DNA-positive specimens. EBV early gene BARF1 mRNA was detected in 2 cases of EBV-positive SLE patients, and these 2 patients were also HHV-6 DNA positive. Thirty-eight patients were BcLF1 mRNA positive, and 33 of them were HHV-6 positive as well. These factors were associated (χ2 = 15.734, P = 0). The expression of the EBV immediate early gene BZLF1 was negative in all 75 EBV-positive SLE patients. Conclusions: The results suggest that EBV infection might be related to the occurrence of SLE. Although there is no direct evidence that HHV-6 infection is associated with the development of SLE, EBV and HHV-6 infection may have a coacceleration effect in SLE patients. This study provides a new theoretical and experimental basis for the study of viral etiology and the prevention and treatment of SLE.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated whether active human cytomegalovirus infection could be detected in 20 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients over a one-year observation period by polymerase chain reaction on serial urine specimens and by monitoring of IgG and IgM HCMV-specific antibody profiles in serial serum samples. Of 788 urine samples analysed for the presence of human cytomegalovirus DNA, only 2 specimens (0.25%) collected from two different patients contained genuine human cytomegalovirus sequences as determined by polymerase chain reaction and subsequent sequencing of the PCR products. These two patients had one positive sample out of 36 samples or 40 samples, respectively. Nineteen of the patients (95%) possessed IgG antibodies against human cytomegalovirus, while 9 (45%) produced IgM antibodies. However, none of the patients showed signs of an active virus infection as judged by the stable anti-HCMV IgG or IgM antibody levels during the observation period, nor was any correlation between disease activity and HCMV serology/viruria observed. Of single serum samples of 26 age- and sex-matched blood donors, 21 (81%) were HCMV IgG positive and 1 (3.8%) was IgM seropositive. In conclusion, our data fail to establish an active human cytomegalovirus infection in SLE patients.
