Abstract:The adsorption isotherm of and the pH effect on the adsorption of myo-inositol hexaphosphate (myo-IP6) on amorphous aluminum hydroxide was investigated. It was found that the adsorption isotherm of myo-IP6 on aluminum hydroxide could be well fitted with the Freundlich isotherm. The amount of myo-IP6 adsorbed remained almost constant in the range of pH 4.0 to 7.0, but it decreased considerably as the initial pH was over 7. The adsorption of myo-IP6 resulted in an increase in the pH level due to the release of OH(-) ions, which suggested that the adsorption of myo-IP6 on aluminum hydroxide was caused by a ligand exchange reaction. ATR-FTIR analysis of myo-IP6 in solution and adsorbed on aluminum hydroxide at different pH were performed. The ATR-FTIR investigation indicated that myo-IP6 was adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide by forming inner-sphere complexes and adsorption facilitated the deprotonation of phosphate groups. The asymmetric vibration of the PO bond in AlPO(-)(3) appearing at a lower frequency than that in the terminal HPO(-)(3) indicated that Al bound to the O atom not as strongly as the H atom did. The ATR-FTIR investigation and theoretical calculation (with the Gaussian 03 program) revealed that three of the six phosphate groups in myo-IP6 molecules were bound to aluminum hydroxide while the other three remained free when myo-IP6 was adsorbed on aluminum hydroxide.
Effects of Phosphate Competition on Arsenate Binding to Aluminum Hydroxide Surfaces

Abstract:Aluminum hydroxide plays a substantial role in regulating the environmental fate and transport of arsenate and phosphate. These minerals display multiple types of surface reactive sites with distinct adsorption affinities. As arsenate and phosphate coexist in many natural systems, a detailed understanding of their interactive adsorption behaviors on aluminum hydroxides and the underlying binding mechanisms is thus required to develop predictive models of their fate and mobility. In this study, we explore how phosphate affects arsenate adsorption onto the aluminum hydroxide polymorphs gibbsite and bayerite and develop a unified surface complexation model (SCM) to predict arsenate adsorption under diverse conditions parameterized only from noncompetitive uptake data. Macroscopic studies show that both oxyanions behave similarly in individual adsorption experiments. The addition of phosphate reduces arsenate adsorption on both minerals with a greater effect observed on gibbsite. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy reveals that similar arsenate species occur on both minerals and are unchanged in the presence of phosphate. This indicates that competitive adsorption does not affect arsenate surface speciation. These results demonstrate that arsenate and phosphate primarily interact on aluminum hydroxide surfaces via site competition. Notably, their similar pKa values and adsorption affinities minimize modification of adsorption behavior from surface electrostatic effects. The SCMs demonstrate that multiple arsenate surface species are needed to reproduce the observed competitive uptake data, in apparent conflict with the spectroscopic results that reveal no change in coordination at different surface coverages. This indicates that the molecular-scale drivers of differences in surface complex stability are not only from distinct local coordination, instead other factors, such as hydrogen bonding among the adsorbates, surface oxygens, and interfacial water or different surface complexes coordinating to functional groups with distinct connections to the underlying mineral structure, may also play an important role.
Solid-State NMR Spectroscopic Study of Phosphate Sorption Mechanisms on Aluminum (Hydr)oxides

Abstract:Sorption reactions occurring at mineral/water interfaces are of fundamental importance in controlling the sequestration and bioavailability of nutrients and pollutants in aqueous environments. To advance the understanding of sorption reactions, development of new methodology is required. In this study, we applied novel P-31 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to investigate the mechanism of phosphate sorption on aluminum hydroxides under different environmental conditions, including pH (4-10), concentration (0.1-10 mM), ionic strength (0.00-10.5 M), and reaction time (15 min-22 days). Under these conditions, the NMR results suggest formation of bidentate binuclear inner-sphere surface complexes was the dominant mechanism. However, it was found that surface wetting caused a small difference. A small amount (<3%) of monodentate mononuclear inner-sphere surface complexes was observed in addition to the majority of bidentate binuclear surface complexes on a wet paste sample prepared at pH 5, which was analyzed in situ by a double-resonance NMR technique, namely, P-31{Al-27} rotational echo adiabatic passage double resonance (REAPDOR). Additionally, we found that adsorbents can substantially impact phosphate sorption not only on the macroscopic sorption capacity but also on their P-31 NMR spectra. Very similar NMR peaks were observed for phosphate sorbed to gibbsite and bayerite, whereas the spectra for phosphate adsorbed to boehmite, corundum, and gamma-alumina were significantly different. All of these measurements reveal that NMR spectroscopy is a useful analytical tool for studying phosphorus chemistry at environmental interfaces.
Molecular Mechanism of Linear Polyphosphate Adsorption on Iron and Aluminum Oxides

Abstract:Polyphosphate is a polymeric P species with environmental and industrial significance. Understanding their interaction with natural minerals is fundamental for predicting their transport and fate in the environment. This study investigates the molecular mechanism of interaction between linear polyphosphates with varied chain length (15P, 60P, and 130P) and Fe/Al oxides using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), 31P solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflection–Fourier transformed infrared (ATR–FTIR) spectroscopy. QCM-D results show that all three polyphosphates irreversibly adsorb on Fe/Al oxides at pH 4–10 with similar mass-based adsorption amounts despite the large difference in chain lengths. ATR–FTIR and NMR spectroscopy results suggest that terminal phosphate groups of the polyphosphate molecules may form bidentate binuclear surface complexes, and a fraction of middle phosphate groups may form monodentate mononuclear surface complexes on Fe/Al oxides. The interaction modes persist for both minerals and all tested pH conditions. Surface Speciation of Phosphate on Boehmite (Gamma-Alooh) Determined from Nmr Spectroscopy

Abstract:Interaction of phosphate with the surfaces of clays and metal oxyhydroxides is important for nutrient cycling in natural and agricultural systems. We examined the specific adsorption of phosphate to boehmite (gamma-AlOOH) by solid-state P-31 NMR spectroscopy, which yields evidence for the presence of two bridging bidentate surface complexes differing in protonation. For samples prepared along the sorption isotherm at pH 5, distinct phosphate environments are observed as two major peaks in P-31 NMR spectra (chemical shifts of 0 and -6 ppm) that show little change in relative intensity with adsorbate loading. Both peaks correspond to rigid phosphate in close proximity to H, as indicated by P-31{H-1} cross-polarization magic-angle-spinning (CP/MAS) data, and yield nearly identical P-31{Al-27} dephasing curves in rotational echo adiabatic passage double resonance (REAPDOR) experiments. The REAPDOR results indicate that both phosphate environments have similar coordination to Al and are best fit by dephasing curves simulated for bridging bidentate configurations. The two resolved phosphate species exhibit distinct P-31 chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) and intensity variations with pH. the peak near 0 ppm being dominant at pH > 7. P-31 CSA's from quantum chemical calculations of hydrated bidentate cluster models with varying protonation state show that the CSA for monoprotonated phosphate is unique and closely matches that for the peak at -6 ppm. The CSA for the peak at 0 ppm is consistent with both di- and nonprotonated phosphate, but assignment to the latter is suggested based on the dominance of this peak in samples prepared at high pH and with trends in P-31 NMR chemical shifts.
Molecular orbital theory study on surface complex structures of phosphates to iron hydroxides: calculation of vibrational frequencies and adsorption energies.

Abstract:Quantum mechanical calculations were applied to resolve controversies about phosphate surface complexes on iron hydroxides. Six possible surface complexes were modeled: deprotonated, monoprotonated, and diprotonated versions of bridging bidentate and monodentate complexes. The calculated frequencies were compared to experimental IR frequency data (Persson et al. J. Colloid Interface Sci. 1996, 177, 263-275; Arai and Sparks J. Colloid Interface Sci. 2001, 241, 317-326.). This study suggests that the surface complexes change depending on pH. Four possible species are a diprotonated bidentate complex at pH 4-6, either a deprotonated bidentate or a monoprotonated monodentate complex at pH 7.5-7.9, and a deprotonated monodentate complex at pH 12.8. In addition, reaction energies were calculated for adsorption from aqueous solution to determine relative stability to form a monoprotonated monodentate complex and a deprotonated bidentate complex. According to these results, the monoprotonated monodentate complex should be favored. Vibrational frequencies of the monoprotonated monodentate and deprotonated bidentate complexes were analyzed with electronic effects on the Fe-OP and H-OP bonds.

Abstract:Phosphate sorption at the corundum (α-Al2O3)/water interface was investigated as a function of phosphate concentration (0.1–1mM) and pH (3–11) by 31P solid state NMR spectroscopy, ATR-FTIR, and quantum chemical calculation. The 31P NMR spectra indicate that under these experimental conditions phosphate adsorbs onto corundum mainly as inner-sphere complexes that yield a peak at δP=−2.8ppm with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 9.2ppm, with a small amount aluminum phosphate surface precipitates as suggested by an NMR signal observed from δP=−12 to −20ppm. We employed 31P{27Al} rotational echo adiabatic passage double resonance (REAPDOR) to further analyze the phosphate adsorption samples prepared at pH 5 and 9 in order to determine the phosphate/Al coordination. To aid interpretation of the NMR data, a series of bidentate and monodentate structural models of phosphate adsorbed on corundum (001) and (012) surfaces were calculated using density function theory (DFT). By comparing the experimental REAPDOR curves and those simulated from these models, we can assign the dominant peaks to bidentate binuclear surface complexes. Formation of bidentate binuclear surface complexes is supported by the ATR/FTIR spectra combined with DFT calculation, which further suggests a mixture of non-protonated bidentate and mono-protonated bidentate surface complexes on the corundum surface at pH 5. At pH 9, both NMR and ATR/FTIR indicate the formation of bidentate surface complexes on corundum surface.

Abstract:Transition aluminas (TAs) are evolved alumina polymorphs during mineral phase transformation from amorphous to crystalline structure, which have been extensively used as engineering adsorbents or platforms of functional materials for pollutants (e.g. eutrophication nutrient PO 4 3− ) mitigation in water remediation. A well-understanding of structure-binding activity of pollutants on transition aluminas is essential for developing promising water remediation materials. In this work, TAs were synthesized through annealing amorphous aluminum (oxy)hydroxide, and a decreased trend of phosphate (PO 4 3− ) adsorption was observed, which was not in pace with the changes of specific surface areas and site densities. The structure disorders of TAs deteriorated continuously peaked at 700 °C and TA at 700 °C has the largest extent of structural disorder, but does not present the highest adsorption capacity, which is not consistent with the consensus that oxides' structural disorder facilitate adsorption. Multiple techniques including pair distribution function, selective chemical extraction, 27 Al NMR and quantum chemistry calculations were employed to reveal the underlying mechanism differences of phosphate adsorption on TAs. The results indicated the fraction of amorphous contents is the key feature governing PO 4 3− adsorption, regardless of mineral phase, structural disorder, AlO 4 /AlO 6 arrangement, and Gibbs free energy of adsorption. Three strategic measures are suggested on making promising alumina engineering adsorbents, including tuning transition temperature, introducing non-tetrahedral and non-octahedral nanostructured grains, and employing more potential methods for synthesizing amorphous nanocrystalline composite. This work sheds lights on understanding the fundamental chemistry of phosphate on transition alumina and producing prospective alumina remediation materials.

Abstract:Eutrophication is generally caused by excess nitrogen and phosphorus being released into surface waters by runoff. Developing adsorbents for adsorbing phosphate within soil buffer zones and/or water treatment columns may be effective methods to mitigate this problem. In this study, an amorphous FeOOH (AF) and a well-crystallized α-FeOOH (CF) was formulated to compare phosphate adsorption behavior. The physicochemical properties between these species showed significant differences in morphology, crystallization, zeta potential, and specific surface area. The AF exhibited higher phosphate uptake than CF. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) verified that the hydroxyl groups within AF were 13.28% higher than that in CF. The triply coordinated hydroxyl groups (μ3-OH) associated with AF and CF appeared at different positions as shown in the diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analyses, confirming that AF contains more adsorption reactive sites (μ3-OH). Mechanisms for monodentate formations and a stable six-member ring structure were proposed. The X-ray absorption near the edge structure (XANES) and XPS results suggested that the iron valence in AF was dominated by Fe (III). XANES also demonstrated that the amorphous structure found in the AF was caused by the disordered tetrahedron and octahedron alignments, leading to a higher phosphate adsorption.

Abstract:Functionalization of Aluminium surfaces by phosphonic acid (PA) treatments is of key industrial importance. This work discloses the effect of PA molecular design on the performance of aqueous PA surface treatments of Aluminium under acidic conditions. Comprehensive XPS and ToF-SIMS analyses show that the "final" nature of the PA adsorbate layer is not only governed by competing in-situ PA adsorption and oxide dissolution processes, but also by modifications of the transient state of the adsorbate layer during subsequent water rinsing in air. Low-soluble organo-metallic-phosphonic (OMP) deposits formed by complexation with Al 3+ ions in solution are largely removed upon water-rinsing; only few physisorbed OMP complexes are converted trans -situ to a chemisorbed state. The in-situ oxide dissolution and ex-situ re-oxidation processes are suppressed with increasing steric size of the PA molecule. Moreover, intermolecular phenyl π-π interactions can act as a driving force to increase the surface density of the PA adsorbate layer in-situ, which also effectively suppresses in-situ oxide dissolution and ex-situ re-oxidation. The findings provide profound insights on how PA molecular designs can be tuned to tailor the chemistry and morphology of PA-adsorbate layers, which may contribute to advance surface treatment strategies of Al surfaces for a wealth of applications.

Complexation of Carboxylate on Smectite Surfaces

Abstract:We report a first principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) study of carboxylate complexation on clay surfaces. By taking acetate as a model carboxylate, we investigate its inner-sphere complexes adsorbed on clay edges (including (010) and (110) surfaces) and in interlayer space. Simulations show that acetate forms stable monodentate complexes on edge surfaces and a bidentate complex with Ca2+ in the interlayer region. The free energy calculations indicate that the complexation on edge surfaces is slightly more stable than in interlayer space. By integrating pKas and desorption free energies of Al coordinated water calculated previously (X. Liu, X. Lu, E. J. Meijer, R. Wang and H. Zhou, Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta, 2012, 81, 56-68; X. Liu, J. Cheng, M. Sprik, X. Lu and R. Wang, Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta, 2014, 140, 410-417), the pH dependence of acetate complexation has been revealed. It shows that acetate forms inner-sphere complexes on (110) in a very limited mildly acidic pH range while it can complex on (010) in the whole common pH range. The results presented in this study form a physical basis for understanding the geochemical processes involving clay-organics interactions.
Co-adsorption of Phosphate and Zinc(ii) on the Surface of Ferrihydrite

Abstract:Ferrihydrite (Fh) is of great importance in affecting the migration and transformation of heavy-metal cations and oxyanions. To advance the understanding of co-adsorption reactions on Fh surface, the co-adsorption of phosphate and Zn(II) from aqueous solution to a synthesized Fh was determined. The batch experiments demonstrated a synergistic adsorption of phosphate and Zn(II) on Fh. In the pH range of 3.5-6, the adsorption of the two contaminants showed strong pH dependence in the single solute adsorption systems, but the dependence alleviated in the simultaneous adsorption system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the chemical shifts of Zn 2p1/2 and Zn 2p3/2 binding energies were more significant than that of P 2p in the single and simultaneous adsorption systems. On the other side, in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) observed increased formation of outer- and inner-sphere complexes of phosphate in the simultaneous system. Thus, the synergistic adsorption of the two contaminants could be attributed to the formation of ternary complexes as well as electrostatic interactions, while surface precipitation could not be completely ruled out. On the basis of the results from both the batch adsorption experiments and structural characterization, these two contaminants were likely to form phosphate-bridged ternary complexes (≡Fe-P-Zn) in the simultaneous adsorption system.
In Situ Infrared Speciation of Adsorbed Carbonate on Aluminum and Iron Oxides

Abstract:Surface adsorption mechanisms of dissolved inorganic carbon species on soil minerals are not well understood. Traditional infrared (IR) study of adsorbed species of inorganic carbon using air-dried samples may not reveal true species in the solid/water interface in suspension. The purpose of this study was to obtain information on interfacial carbonate speciation between solid and aqueous phases. The interaction of bicarbonate and carbonate ions with X-ray amorphous (am) Al and Fe oxides, gibbsite (γ−Al(OH)3) and goethite (α-FeOOH) was examined by electrophoresis and in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The presence of carbonate lowered the electropho-retic mobility and decreased the point of zero charge (PZC) of all minerals, implying specific adsorption. Inner-sphere complexation of bicarbonate and carbonate was supported by a lowering in the anion symmetry due to the interaction with Al and Fe oxide surfaces. Only complexed monodentate carbonate was identified in am-Al(OH)3/aqueous solution at pH 4.1-7.8 when the solid was reacted with either NaHC03 or Na2CO3 solutions. Am-Al(OH)3 was transformed to a crystalline sodium aluminum hydroxy carbonate, dawsonite [NaAl(CO3)(OH)2], and bayerite (α-Al(OH)3) after reacting with 1.0 M Na2CO3 for 24 h. Gibbsite adsorbed much less carbonate than am-Al(OH)3 such that adsorbed carbonate on gibbsite gave weak IR absorption. It is probable that monodentate carbonate is also the complexed species on gibbsite. Evidence suggesting the presence of both surface complexed bicarbonate and carbonate species in the interfacial region of am-Fe(OH)3 in suspension and the dependence of their relative distribution on solution pH is shown. Only monodentate carbonate was found in the interfacial region of goethite in 1.0 M NaHCO3. A ligand exchange reaction was proposed to describe the interaction of bicarbonate and carbonate with the surface functional groups of Al and Fe oxides.

Abstract:To explore the complexation mechanisms of carboxylate on phyllosilicate edge surfaces, we simulate acetate complexes on the (010) type edge of pyrophyllite by using density functional theory method. We take into account the intrinsic long-range order and all the possible complex sets under common environments. This study discloses that H-bonding interactions occur widely and play important roles in both inner-sphere and outer-sphere fashions. In inner-sphere complexes, one acetate C–O bond elongates to form a covalent bond with surface Al atom; the other C–O either forms a covalent bond with Al or interacts with surface hydroxyls via H-bonds. In outer-sphere complexes, the acetate can capture a proton from the surface groups to form an acid molecule. For the groups of both substrate and ligand, the variations in geometrical parameters caused by H-bonding interactions depend on the role it plays (i.e., proton donor or acceptor). By comparing the edge structures before and after interaction, we found that the carboxylate binding can modify the surface structures. In the inner-sphere complexes, the exposed Al atom can be stabilized by a single acetate ion through either monodentate or bidentate schemes, whereas the Al atoms complexing both an acetate and a hydroxyl may significantly deviate outwards from the bulk equilibrium positions. In the outer-sphere complexes, some H-bondings are strong enough to polarize the metal–oxygen bonds and therefore distort the local coordination structure of metal in the substrate, which may make the metal susceptible to release.
An Investigation of the Roles of Surface Aluminum and Acid Sites in the Zeolite Mcm-22

Abstract:Ammonia adsorption studies reveal that the observed Lewis acidity in the zeolite MCM-22 is derived from at least two types of framework aluminum sites (Al-F), that is, octahedral Al-F and three-coordinate Al-F. Comparative ammonia or trimethylphosphine (TMP) adsorption experiments with MCM-22 confirm that octahedral Al species gives rise to the signal at delta(ISO) approximate to 0 in the Al-27 NMR spectrum; this is a superposition of two NMR signals from the different Al species on the water-re constructed zeolite surface. A sharp resonance assigned to framework Al reversibly transforms on ammonia adsorption to delta(ISO) Al-27 approximate to 55 from tetrahedral Al-F, while the broad peak is assigned to nonframework aluminium which results from hydrothermal treatment. This study also demonstrates the effectiveness of Al-27 magic angle spinning (MAS) and multiple quantum (MQ) MAS NMR spectroscopy as a technique for the study of zeolite reactions.

Abstract:An electrochemical procedure is proposed for the speciation of aluminum (At) by derivative adsorption chronopotentiometry on a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) using pyrocatechol violet (PCV) as a complexing agent. Labile monomeric Al fraction (mainly inorganic Al) was determined at PH 4.9 (accumulation time 60 s, accumulation potential -0.45 V, PCV concentration 1.5 x 10(-6) mol dm(-3) and stripping current 5 muA), while total monomeric At fraction was determined at pH 8.2 (accumulation time 60 s, accumulation potential -0.50 V, PCV concentration 2.5 x 10(-6) mol dm(-3) and stripping current 5 muA). This sensitive and simple fractionation method was successfully applied to the speciation of Al in natural water samples. Five fractions were determined and measured: i) labile monomeric At (Ali); ii) total monomeric At (Ala) iii) acid reactive Al (Alr); iv) nonlabile monomeric At (Alo); v) acid soluble At (Als). The results were satisfactorily in agreement with those of the 8-hydroxyquinoline extraction/ion exchange method.

Abstract:The aim of this paper was to examine the calcium-cholate-phosphate tenary complexes by FTIR spectroscopy. The results indicated that the mole ratio of cholate to phosphate were 1:3 and 1:4 in ternary complexes respectively when the initial mole ratio of cholate to phosphate were 3:1 and 1.5:1 in reaction. The FTIR spectroscopic results demonstrated that in the ternary complexes Ca2+ was coordinated with O in both COO- and PO(4)3- groups.

Abstract:Hydroxy-Fe-Al Pillared Clays (FeAl-PILC) containing mixed-metal complexes with various Fe/Al ratios were characterized by UV-DRS. Mossbauer spectrascopy, XPS, TPR measurement. The surface hydroxyl and acidity were determined by IR, Py-IR and TPD. The results have shown that iron in the pillars relatively stronger interacts with alumina in the pillars than with silica of interlayer. The interaction is stronger in FeAl-PILC with Fe/Al ratio<0.5 than that with Fe/Al ratio>0.5. The surface acidity is decreased with increasing of Fe/Al ratio.

Abstract:The chemical structure of aluminum phosphate binder, which is used as a sealant for thermally sprayed coatings, was studied. Powder X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the binder was a mixture of several phases. None of these phases could be identified from the powder XRD data only. Electron diffraction revealed several distinct microcrystalline phases. The predominated phase was analyzed in more detail. The three‐dimensional reciprocal lattice was reconstructed from a tilt series of electron‐diffraction patterns that indicated that the main phase was the cyclohexaphosphate Al 2 P 6 O 18 . The similarity of the intensity distribution in the observed and simulated electron‐diffraction patterns of Al 2 P 6 O 18 confirmed this observation. The following unit‐cell parameters were determined from the reconstructed reciprocal lattice: a = 8.8(7) Å, b = 15.5(6) Å, and c = 6.3(9) Å, β= 108°, and Z = 2. The reflection conditions indicated that the space group was P 2 1 / a .
