Abstract:In this study, we developed a highly efficient bifunctional Mn-NiFe@WO x electrocatalyst for anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), a promising zero-gap electrolyzer. Hierarchical structured Mn-NiFe@WO x provided directional charge pathways and extensive catalytic sites through 1D nanowire (NW)/2D nanosheet array (NSA) combination. Mn doping dramatically improved the intrinsic HER activity from modulating the electronic structure of NiFe hydroxide, which was confirmed through XPS, XAS, electrochemical analysis, and DFT calculations. Operando EC AP-HAXPES was further performed to study surface reconstruction of metal hydroxides during water splitting. Operando surface analysis confirmed the surface reconstruction of metal hydroxide to oxy-hydroxide under OER condition. Synergistic effects of Mn doping and surface reconstruction result in excellent bifunctional activity with remarkably low HER overpotentials of 18/197 mV to reach –10/–500 mA cm −2 and low OER overpotentials of 236/320 mV, reaching 10/500 mA cm −2 . When Mn-NiFe@WO x was applied as a binder-free directly deposited anode/cathode for AEMWE, it exhibits only 1.83 V at a current density of 1 A cm −2 and operates stably for 300 h at the same current density. By subdividing the overpotential into three factors, the effects of Mn doping and the hierarchical structure in AEMWE were confirmed by the reduction in kinetic and mass transfer overpotentials. The experimental and theoretical analysis results showed that the synergistic effect of Mn doping and the hierarchical structure of Mn-NiFe@WO x enhances the water-splitting activity of the AEMWE.
