Abstract:In recent years, tagging systems have been paid increasing attentions from both research communities and system designers. Most popular Online social networking sites harness tag for managing and locating contents, for organizing and connecting users, and for recommending and sharing resources. We believe that tag acts like bridge between people and resources. Research on tag and tagging behavior will provide us insight about resource space and user activities oil the Internet. In this paper, we present a two-level analysis of the tagging system of Del.icio.us. The results from both two levels confirm each other. In network level, we connect tags by users collaborative tagging to form it social network of tags. By investigating its network feature. we find phenomena of small world and scale-free network. We also discover that the links within this network have relatively strong semantic relatedness. In individual level, users tagging behaviors and patterns are observed by Visualizing their book marking history oil Del.icio.us. Besides, we study the linked users by their tags and Find that users within a Subscription network share more common interests than random pairs of users. During the analysis. we also discuss the implications of the findings for the design of tag-based system.
Finding Influential Local Users with Similar Interest from Geo-Tagged Social Media Data.

Abstract:Geo-tagged social media data provides abundant resources for people in need of local information. In this paper, we study how to find the top-k influential local users from geo-tagged social media data who have interests similar to a query. Such local users can be of particular importance for a variety of activities from events organizing to online advertising. We formulate the problem as Top-k Influential Similar Local Query (TkISL) and provide a complete set of techniques for solving it. To effectively manage the social media users, we design three hybrid user profiling techniques, an indexing tree, and an upper bound query-user similarity that enables efficient pruning in query processing. To process TkISL queries, we propose a baseline method and a more efficient improved method. The former directly uses the indexing tree and the upper bound for pruning, whereas the latter speeds up the query processing by enhancing the tree and pruning. Finally, we conduct extensive experimental studies to evaluate our proposals on real geo-tagged tweet corpora. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposals.

Abstract:Social networking sites like Flickr , Youtube and Del.icio.us have been rapidly gaining popularity on the Internet, underscoring a transformation of the Web to a participatory medium in which users are actively creating, evaluating and distributing information. With this process, social tagging systems, which allow users to interactively annotate a pool of shared resources using descriptive tags, have enjoyed phenomenal success in recent years. Folksonomy are data created in social tagging. Tags in folksonomy reflect userspsila collaborative cognition on information. They can reveal both the userspsila behavior and resourcespsila properties. In this paper, we will study the vocabulary of userspsila tagging and the relationship between words. We connect tags by users collaborative tagging to form a network of folksonomy, and investigate the semantic relatedness between tags within it. The result shows that the links within this network have relatively strong semantic relatedness, which is useful for designing future folksonomy-based systems.

Abstract:In the social network, similar users are assumed to prefer similar items, so searching the similar users of a target user plays an important role for most collaborative filtering methods. Existing collaborative filtering methods use user ratings of items to search for similar users. Nowadays, abundant social information is produced by the Internet, such as user profiles, social relationships, behaviors, interests, and so on. Only using user ratings of items is not sufficient to recommend wanted items and search for similar users. In this paper, we propose a new collaborative filtering method using social information fusion. Our method first uses social information fusion to search for similar users and then updates the user rating of items for recommendation using similar users. Experiments show that our method outperforms the existing methods based on user ratings of items and using social information fusion to search similar users is an available way for collaborative filtering methods of recommender systems.

Abstract:With the development of the web 2.0 communities, more and more collaborative tagging systems become popular in recent years. Based on previous relevant works on the collaborative tagging system, this paper proposes a concept of a multi-type and multi-level user profile for improving the efficiency of personalized search. User profile consists of different types of resource attributes, and every type reflects multi-level favorites and nuisances from user. A detailed design process of user profile is presented in this paper. We propose a personalized search method by using the multi-type and multi-level user profile. Experimental results on a large real dataset demonstrate that the multi-type and multi-level user profile outperforms the baseline methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we mine and learn to predict how similar a pair of users' interests towards videos are, based on demographic (age, gender and location) and social (friendship, interaction and group membership) information of these users. We use the video access patterns of active users as ground truth (a form of benchmark). We adopt tag-based user profiling to establish this ground truth, and justify why it is used instead of video-based methods, or many latent topic models such as LDA and Collaborative Filtering approaches. We then show the effectiveness of the different demographic and social features, and their combinations and derivatives, in predicting user interest similarity, based on different machine-learning methods for combining multiple features. We propose a hybrid tree-encoded linear model for combining the features, and show that it out-performs other linear and treebased models. Our methods can be used to predict user interest similarity when the ground-truth is not available, e.g. for new users, or inactive users whose interests may have changed from old access data, and is useful for video recommendation. Our study is based on a rich dataset from Tencent, a popular service provider of social networks, video services, and various other services in China.

Abstract:Collaborative tags are playing a more and more important role for the organization of information systems. In this paper, we study a personalized recommendation model making use of the ternary relations among users, objects and tags. We propose a measure of user similarity based on his preference and tagging information. Two kinds of similarities between users are calculated by using a diffusion-based process, which are then integrated for recommendation. We test the proposed method in a standard collaborative filtering framework with three metrics: ranking score, Recall and Precision, and demonstrate that it performs better than the commonly used cosine similarity.

Abstract:In this work we present an in-depth analysis of the user behaviors on different Social Sharing systems. We consider three popular platforms, Flickr, Delicious and StumbleUpon, and, by combining techniques from social network analysis with techniques from semantic analysis, we characterize the tagging behavior as well as the tendency to create friendship relationships of the users of these platforms. The aim of our investigation is to see if (and how) the features and goals of a given Social Sharing system reflect on the behavior of its users and, moreover, if there exists a correlation between the social and tagging behavior of the users. We report our findings in terms of the characteristics of user profiles according to three different dimensions: (i) intensity of user activities, (ii) tag-based characteristics of user profiles, and (iii) semantic characteristics of user profiles.

Towards Efficient Content Management in Online Social Communities — A Study of User Interest and Context

Abstract:As hundreds of millions of users access online social communities at daily or even real-time basis, large amounts of user data are continuously generated. The fast-growing user-generated content poses great challenges on online social network system design for efficient content management and delivery. For instance, in content-centric online social network, all contents are organized in a temporal order which makes it very time consuming for users to browse all these contents to locate what they really like. By conducting a comprehensive study of online user activities, including content, social, and time characteristics, this paper try to accurately characterize user interest and user context, with the end goal of more efficient content management and real-time content delivery in online social network systems. The detail analysis of user activities is conducted on the real data collected from a popular online social community among Chinese universities with over 63,000 users to demonstrate the advantage and effectiveness of extracting user interest and context characteristics and applying them in designing more efficient content management systems.

Abstract:Tags have been used in different social medias, such as Delicious, Flickr, LinkedIn and Weibo. In previous work, considerable efforts have been made to make use of tags without identification of their different types. In this study, we argue that tags in user profile indicate three different types of information, say the basics age, status, locality, etc, interests and specialty of a person. Based on this novel user tag taxonomy, we propose a tag classification approach in Weibo to conduct a clearer image of user profiles, which makes use of three categories of features: general statistics feature including user links with followers and followings, content feature and syntax feature. Furthermore, different from many previous studies on tag which concentrate on user specialties, such as expert finding, we find that valuable information can be discovered with the basics and interests user tags. We show some interesting findings in two scenarios, including user profiling with people come from different generations and area profiling with mass appeal, with large scale tag clustering and mining in over 6 million identical tags with 13 million users in Weibo data.

Abstract:Given the diverse focuses of emerging online social networks (OSNs), it is quite common that a user has accounts on multiple OSN sites. Social hub services, a.k.a., social directory services, help users manage their accounts on different sites. In this work, we conduct a data-driven study by crawling more than one million profiles from about.me, a representative social hub service. Our study aims to gain insights by referring to the crawled data. According to our analysis, we can see a user has a high probability to provide consistent information across different OSN sites. In addition, we demonstrate the usefulness of cross-OSN information aggregation.

Abstract:The popularity of collaborative tagging sites presents a unique opportunity to explore keyword search in a context where query results are determined by the opinion of a network of taggers related to a seeker. In this paper, we present the first in-depth study of network-aware search. We investigate efficient top- k processing when the score of an answer is computed as its popularity among members of a seeker's network. We argue that obvious adaptations of top- k algorithms are too space-intensive, due to the dependence of scores on the seeker's network. We therefore develop algorithms based on maintaining score upper-bounds. The global upper-bound approach maintains a single score upper-bound for every pair of item and tag, over the entire collection of users. The resulting bounds are very coarse. We thus investigate clustering seekers based on similar behavior of their networks. We show that finding the optimal clustering of seekers is intractable, but we provide heuristic methods that give substantial time improvements. We then give an optimization that can benefit smaller populations of seekers based on clustering of taggers. Our results are supported by extensive experiments on del.icio.us datasets.

Abstract:User-based collaborative filtering is one of the most widely-used recommender methods. It recommends items to a user according to her similar users' opinions. The key point of user-based collaborative filtering is to compute users' similarities. In traditional user-based collaborative filtering, the similarity between two users is determined by their ratings to co-rated items. In some cases, two users rate few common items, such that the similarity between them may be inaccurate and it results in misleading recommendations. With the rapid development of social tagging systems, social tagging data poses new opportunities for recommender systems. Many researchers have proposed different methods to exploit tagging data to improve the performance of recommender systems. In this paper, we propose a new approach to compute users' similarities using the inferred tag ratings. A user's preference for a tag t can be inferred based on her ratings of items tagged with t. A user rates too few such items, then her inferred rating to t may be inaccurate. Hence the relationships among tags are used to infer her preference for t based on all her item ratings, such that the preference of user could be accurate. Experiments were done on the MovieLens data set to evaluate the performance of our approach. The results show that our approach outperform traditional user-based collaborative filtering.

Abstract:Given the diverse focuses of emerging online social networks (OSNs), it is common that a user has signed up on multiple OSNs. Social hub services, a.k.a., social directory services, help each user manage and exhibit her OSN accounts on one webpage. In this work, we conduct a data-driven study by crawling over one million user profiles from about.me, a representative online social hub service. Our study aims at gaining insights on cross-OSN social influence from the crawled data. We first analyze the composition of the social hub users. For each user, we collect her social accounts from her social hub webpage, and aggregate the content generated by these accounts on different OSNs to gain a comprehensive view of this user. According to our analysis, there is a high probability that a user would provide consistent information on different OSNs. We then explore the correlation between user activities on different OSNs, based on which we propose a cross-OSN social influence prediction model. With the model, we can accurately predict a user’s social influence on emerging OSNs, such as Instagram, Foursquare, and Flickr, based on her data published on well-established OSNs like Twitter.

Abstract:The cyber-physical systems (CPS) are envisioned as a class of real-time systems integrating the computing, communication, and storage facilities with monitoring and control of the physical world. With the proliferation of social media contents in the Web, a novel type of CPS applications allow users to link interesting objects in the physical world to the corresponding social media contents in the virtual world. Such new CPS applications require novel techniques to find the semantic relationships between the two worlds, and provide efficient search tools in the integrated cyberphysical world. In this paper, we propose a general framework for supporting social media search in the cyber-physical Web, or CPSS. This framework addresses the key problems identified on different schematic levels of CPSS. We report our studies on these problems and present our solutions to four different categories of searches/recommendations in CPSS, namely the model-based search, the non-model-based search, the real-time media search, and the geo-social analytics.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a tag recommendation algorithm for profiling the users in Sina Weibo. Sina Weibo has become the largest and most popular Chinese microblogging system upon which many real applications are deployed such as personalized recommendation, precise marketing, customer relationship management and etc. Although closely related, tagging users bears subtle difference from traditional tagging Web objects due to the complexity and diversity of human characteristics. To this end, we design an integrated recommendation algorithm whose unique feature lies in its comprehensiveness by collectively exploring the social relationships among users, the co-occurrence relationships and semantic relationships between tags. Thanks to deep comprehensiveness, our algorithm works particularly well against the two challenging problems of traditional recommender systems, i.e., data sparsity and semantic redundancy. The extensive evaluation experiments validate our algorithm's superiority over the state-of-the-art methods in terms of matching performance of the recommended tags. Moreover, our algorithm brings a broader perspective for accurately inferring missing characteristics of user profiles in social networks.

Abstract:The explosion of contents on the Web poses a great challenge for users to find ldquorightrdquo information to meet their need. Though some tools exist that can provide help, they only meet the need from limited perspectives and as a result, users have to use multiple tools even for the same goal. This paper proposes an integrated system named Search 2.0 for information seeking on the Web. Specifically, it makes the following contributions: (1) collaboration support is introduced into traditional search engines, making information seeking a social process; (2) an automatic tag learning approach is put forward based on explicit user feedback and traditional search engines.

Abstract:We studied the electronic communication of knowledge users collaborating on a community and found that their work and interactions were mediated by the use of tag. Drawing on these, we found social tagging is the process by which many users add metadata in the form of keywords, to annotate and categorize information items (books, pictures, films etc.). Automatic discourse classification according to tag in social information sharing, transfer and knowledge communication provided a higher level of service quality. By investigating user behavior in Douban community, the relationship between social tagging and user behavior was studied. The results showed that, given a set of objects, and a set of tags applied to those objects by users, we can predict whether a given tag could/should be applied to a particular object by user behavior.

Abstract:Collaborative tagging has recently attracted the attention of both industry and academia due to the popularity of content-sharing systems such as CiteULike, <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://del.icio.us" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, and Flickr. These systems give users the opportunity to add data items and to attach their own metadata (or tags) to stored data. The result is an effective content management tool for individual users. Recent studies, however, suggest that, as tagging communities grow, the added content and the metadata become harder to manage due to an ease in content diversity. Thus, mechanisms that cope with increase of diversity are fundamental to improve the scalability and usability of collaborative tagging systems. This paper analyzes whether usage patterns can be harnessed to improve navigability in a growing knowledge space. To this end, it presents a characterization of two collaborative tagging communities that target scientific literature: CiteULike and Bibsonomy. We explore three main directions: First, we analyze the tagging activity distribution across the user population. Second, we define new metrics for similarity in user interest and use these metrics to uncover the structure of the tagging communities we study. The structure we uncover suggests a clear segmentation of interests into a large number of individuals with unique preferences and a core set of users with interspersed interests. Finally, we offer preliminary results that demonstrate that the interest-based structure of the tagging community can be used to facilitate content usage as communities scale.

Abstract:Although Web search techniques have greatly facilitate users’ information seeking, there are still quite a lot of search sessions that cannot provide satisfactory results, which are more serious in Web image search scenarios. How to understand user intent from observed data is a fundamental issue and of paramount significance in improving image search performance. Previous research efforts mostly focus on discovering user intent either from clickthrough behavior in user search logs (e.g., Google), or from social data to facilitate vertical image search in a few limited social media platforms (e.g., Flickr). This article aims to combine the virtues of these two information sources to complement each other, that is, sensing and understanding users’ interests from social media platforms and transferring this knowledge to rerank the image search results in general image search engines. Toward this goal, we first propose a novel social-sensed image search framework, where both social media and search engine are jointly considered. To effectively and efficiently leverage these two kinds of platforms, we propose an example-based user interest representation and modeling method, where we construct a hybrid graph from social media and propose a hybrid random-walk algorithm to derive the user-image interest graph. Moreover, we propose a social-sensed image reranking method to integrate the user-image interest graph from social media and search results from general image search engines to rerank the images by fusing their social relevance and visual relevance. We conducted extensive experiments on real-world data from Flickr and Google image search, and the results demonstrated that the proposed methods can significantly improve the social relevance of image search results while maintaining visual relevance well.
