Abstract:A novel PbO(2)electrode was fabricated by adding graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) inter-layer into beta-PbO2 active layer (called GNP-PbO2) and utilized to degradation of antibiotic enoxacin (ENO). The GNP-PbO2 electrode had a much rougher surface than the typical PbO2 electrode, with smaller crystal size and lower charge-transfer resistance at the electrode/electrolyte interface. Notably, the GNP inter-layer increased the oxygen evolution potential of PbO2 electrode (2.05 V vs. SCE), which was very beneficial to inhibit oxygen evolution and promote .OH production. The relatively best operating parameters for ENO removal and energy efficiency were current density of 20 mA cm(-2), initial pH of 7, initial ENO concentration of 100 mg L-1 and electrode distance of 4 cm. Furthermore, indirect radical oxidation was found to be the main way during electrolysis process. Based on the observed analysis of intermediate products, the main reaction pathways of ENO included hydroxylation, defluorination and piperazine ring-opening. Finally, combinating with the electro-oxidation capability, stability and safety evaluation, we can conclude that GNP-PbO2 is a promising anode for treatment of various organic pollutants in wastewater.

Abstract:Electrochemical degradation of bamboo lignin through electrocatalytic redox between Cu cathode and Pb/PbO2 anode in sodium hydroxide solution was investigated in this work. Electrocatalytic performance of the electrode system was analyzed by cyclic voltammetry and cathodic polarization to validate that Cu and Pb/PbO2 electrodes had a great ability of electrochemical oxidation and electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) in lignin alkali solution. Through the electrocatalytic redox in the process, 24 kinds of products were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and three of them (vanillin, syringaldehyde and p-coumaric acid) were detected with high yields by gas chromatograph (GC) with internal standard method. Effects of operating parameters, i. e., lignin concentration, current density and temperature, were also investigated to find the optimum degradation conditions at which the maximum yields of vanillin, syringaldehyde and p-coumaric acid could be obtained.

Abstract:A novel Al-doped PbO2 electrode with high oxygen evolution potential and electrochemical oxidation performance is prepared by electrodeposition technique. The Al-doped PbO2 electrode has significant improvements in electrochemical oxidation ability and electrode stability. From the morphological point of view, the introduction of Al3+ limits crystal particles and produces compact films. The films have better electrochemical oxidation ability and we demonstrated that by oxidizing aspirin. We found that the energy saving (using EE/O calculations) can be up to 34% after Al3+ doping. Abstract:A novel Ti/PbO2 electrode modified with Ti4O7 was synthesized through electrochemical deposition method. The surface morphology and electrochemical performance of the as-prepared electrodes were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), etc. The characterization results indicated that Ti4O7 composite modification improved the surface morphology and crystal plane orientation of the PbO2 coating electrodes and reduced the interplanar spacing of PbO2. Phenol was chosen as the model pollutant to evaluate electrochemical activity of the electrode. The Ti4O7 with 1.0 g L−1 below 500 mesh modification electrodes presented the highest removal efficiency (97.8%) on degradation of phenol, which could be attributed to its high oxygen evolution potential (OEP) and more electrode active sites.

Abstract:Rational reuse of municipal sludge to produce electro-Fenton electrode can not only save resources, but also produce superior peroxide and degradation pollutants simultaneously. Herein, a novel electro-Fenton electrode derived from sludge biochar loaded on Ni foam (SBC@Ni) was constructed via high temperature pyrolysis and chemical coating for efficient H2O2 evolution and pollutant degradation. Systematic experiments and density functional theory calculations (DFT calculation) explained that the production of graphite C and graphite N during high-temperature pyrolysis of municipal sludge can greatly enhance the oxygen reduction reaction of SBC@Ni electrode and promote the evolution of H2O2. And the hybrid heterojunctions, such as FeP, also played a key role in electrocatalytic processes. Notably, the electrode still exhibited excellent performance after 1000 linear scans and 12 h of continuous current stimulation, which demonstrated the excellent stability of the electrode. Moreover, SBC@Ni electrode can not only effectively oxidize 4-chlorophenol through the electro-Fenton effect, but also fully mineralize organic matter, indicating promising environmental application. The free radical quenching experiment also revealed that the ·OH is the main active species for 4-CP degradation in SBC@Ni electro-Fenton system.

Abstract:The PbO2 electrodes were preservative and chemically stable but had the problem of the poor electrocatalytic oxidation activity and instability. In this research, Pb/PbO2 electrodes with good electrocatalytic oxidation activity and stability were prepared via a novel combined method of thermal oxidation and electrochemical oxidation, which was different form electrodeposition and coating method. Combined with the results analyzed by SEM, metallographic microscope, XRD, steady-state polarization and CV tests, the electrocatalytic oxidation performance was evaluated by the generation capacity of ·OH and the removal efficiency of Congo red (CR). The experimental results put in evidence that the electrochemical oxidation time affected the electrochemical oxidation performance of Pb/PbO2 electrode by refinement of crystal sizes and strengthening of crystallinity which promoted oxygen evolution potential and ·OH generation ability. The better ·OH generation ability of 6-PbO2 encouraged the removal of CR (68.62%, 0.177 min−1) whose chromophore and ring structure of aromatic hydrocarbons was destroyed by ·OH (7.82 × 10−4 μM min−1) with initial concentration of 20 mg·L-1 at 8 mA·cm-2 for 20 min. Moreover, 6-PbO2 owned stability for its compact surface. It showed that the stable 6-PbO2 electrode prepared by the thermal oxidation-electrochemical oxidation method had good electrocatalytic oxidation activity and excellent application potential, which were worthy of further research.

Robust PbO2 modified by co-deposition of ZrO2 nanoparticles for efficient degradation of ceftriaxone sodium

Abstract:In recent years, PbO2 electrodes have received widespread attention due to their high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. However, due to the brittle nature of the plating layer, it is easy to cause the active layer to fall off. Pb2+ will leach out with the electrochemical process causing secondary pollution. The starting point of this study is established to improve the stability and adhesion of the electrode coating. Electrochemical oxidation technology has the characteristics of high treatment efficiency, wide range of applications, and non-polluting environment. In this study, conventional PbO2 electrodes were modified by using co-deposition of ZrO2 nanoparticles. In addition, α-PbO2 was added to increase the stability of the electrodes. At a high current density of 1 A/cm2, the accelerated life of the pure PbO2 electrode is 648 h, the accelerated life of the PbO2-ZrO2 electrode is 1.37 times that of the pure PbO2, and the electrode with an added α-PbO2 layer is 1.69 times that of the pure PbO2 electrode. The amount of dissolved Pb2+ was only 29% of that of pure PbO2. The electrochemical performance of the electrode is evaluated by studying the degradation effect of ceftriaxone sodium (CXM). The addition of ZrO2 nanoparticles alters the particle size and deposition content of PbO2, leading to a unique crystal structure distinct from pure PbO2. Compared to conventional PbO2 electrodes, the PbO2-ZrO2 can remove chemical oxygen demand (COD) and pollutants more efficiently, removing for 59% increased by 38.47%. Therefore, PbO2-ZrO2 is of great value in the field of electrochemical degradation of industrial pollutants.
Efficient Degradation of Phenolic Wastewaters by a Novel Ti/PbO2-Cr-PEDOT Electrode with Enhanced Electrocatalytic Activity and Chemical Stability

Abstract:Novel Ti/PbO2-Cr-PEDOT electrodes were prepared by electrodeposition for electrochemical degradation of phenolic wastewater. The electrodes were characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, XPS, and FT-IR to study the crystalline, surface morphology, elements distribution, and microstructure of the electrodes. A flat and compact interface was obtained with Cr and PEDOT doping into beta-PbO2 plate by electrodeposition method. The linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were conducted to explore the electrochemical performance of the prepared electrodes. The Ti/PbO2-Cr-PEDOT electrode exhibited a higher oxygen evolution potential (OEP, 2.53 V vs SCE) and a lower charge transfer resistance compared with Ti/PbO2. Phenol degradation efficiency of 100% and TOC removal rate of 95.02% were achieved in the electrochemical degradation of phenol within 120 min. The optimal process parameters (phenol concentration = 1000 mg.L-1, electrolyte concentration = 4.0 g.L-1, current density = 15 mA.cm(-2) and electrode distance = 3 cm) in the process of electrochemical oxidation of phenol wastewater were explored. Active species trapping experiments proved that center dot OH radicals played an important role in the electrochemical system. Furthermore, the electrode also showed high activity for the degradation of other phenolic wastewaters such as phloroglucinol (eta(DEP) = 100%), bisphenol A (eta(DEP) = 97.17%) and p-chlorophenol (eta(DEP) = 89.77%) within 60 min. A possible degradation pathway was proposed based on the intermediate products determined by HPCL. The Ti/PbO2-Cr-PEDOT electrode showed excellent stability with only 3% loss of degradation efficiency (eta(DEP )= 96.95%) after recycling tests for 5 times. These results suggest that Ti/PbO2-Cr-PEDOT is a promising electrode for electrochemical degradation of phenolic wastewaters.
A closed-loop electrokinetic system for recovery of PbO2@Fe composite derived from lead-containing sludge

Abstract:Lead-containing sludge produced from lead-acid battery factory will cause environmental hazards if they are not treated properly. A novel process was developed to recycle lead from sludge back into Fe-doped PbO2 electrodes and realize sludge reduction in this study. The effects of Fenton conditioning on Pb removal efficiency in electro-kinetic (EK) treatment process and its mechanism as well as electro-dewatering (ED) performance were investigated. It was found that the oxidation of Fenton can promote desorption and release of Pb from the organic binding state, and improve the removal efficiency of Pb during EK process, as well as enhance sludge ED performance. About 63.8 wt% Pb can be removed from sludge during EK process, achieving sludge reduction of 63.5 wt% by ED treatment. The composite PbO2@Fe electrode recovered from lead-containing sludge showed a high electrocatalytic activity for acid red G (ARG) degradation. The electrode obtained by electrodeposition at 20 mA cm−2 had the largest exchange current density (3.26 × 10−5 A cm−2). In the experiment of dye wastewater electrocatalytic degradation, over 99.5% organic matter was degraded within 80 min.

Abstract:We have investigated the effects on water intake of subcutaneous (S.C.) injections of low (0.5 mg/kg) and high (100 mg/kg) doses of captopril, an inhibitor of angiotensin‐converting enzyme (CE). Low doses block the synthesis of angiotensin II only in the circulation whereas high doses block CE in both the blood and the brain. The low dose of captopril enhanced drinking in response to three hypotensive drugs, isoprenaline (0.1 mg/kg, S.C.), phentolamine (5 mg/kg, S.C.) and serotonin (2 mg/kg, S.C.), whereas the high dose of captopril abolished drinking in response to these stimuli. The low dose of captopril also enhanced drinking in response to histamine (0.25‐5.0 mg/kg, intraperitoneal, I.P.), but in this case the high dose of captopril only partially reduced the drinking response. The low dose of captopril enhanced drinking after 24 h water deprivation but high doses had no significant effect on deprivation‐induced thirst. Hypovolaemia was produced either by injecting polyethylene glycol (30% w/v, 10 ml/kg) S.C. or by replenishing the cellular deficit in water‐deprived rats with 10 ml water (by gavage). The low dose of captopril enhanced the drinking response to hypovolaemia but the high dose had no significant effect. Neither the high nor the low dose of captopril significantly affected drinking in response to cellular dehydration caused by injecting 2 M‐NaCl (2 ml) I.P. or by replenishing the extracellular deficit in water‐deprived rats (10 ml balanced salt solution by gavage). Nephrectomy (but not ligation of the ureters) or injections of propranolol (5 mg/kg, S.C.) to prevent renin secretion prevented the enhancement of deprivation‐or serotonin‐induced thirst by the low dose of captopril. The low dose of captopril did not enhance drinking in response to I.V. injections of renin (1 Goldblatt unit), or intracerebroventricular (I.C.V.) injections of angiotensin I or II. The high dose of captopril blocked drinking in response to I.V. injections of renin or I.C.V. injections of angiotensin I but did not reduce drinking in response to angiotensin II, I.C.V. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that blocking CE only in the circulation enhances drinking in response to hypotension or hypovolaemia because angiotensin I, accumulating in high concentration in the blood, enters the brain and is converted intracerebrally to angiotensin II. These findings suggest that the enhancement of drinking caused by low doses of captopril s.c. is a sensitive indicator of whether the renin‐ angiotensin system participates at all in the regulatory response to a particular stimulus to drink.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract:Electrocatalytic oxidation is a promising process for degrading toxic and biorefractory organic pollutants in wastewater treatment. Selection of electrode materials is crucial for electrochemical oxidation process. In this study, Ti/F-PbO2 and Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrodes were chosen to compare their electrocatalytic characterization, which were prepared by electrodeposition and thermal decomposition method, respectively. The surface morphology and crystal structure of two electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The linear polarization curves show that Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrodes possess higher oxygen evolution overpotential than Ti/F-PbO2 electrodes. But the stability and corrosion resistance ability of Ti/F-PbO2 electrode was higher than that of Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrode. The electrocatalytic activity of Ti/F-PbO2 and Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrodes was examined for the electrochemical oxidation of malachite green (MG). The bulk electrolysis shows that the Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrodes exhibit the higher electrocatalytic activity for the degradation of MG than Ti/F-PbO2 electrodes, and the degradation process is good fitting for the pseudo-first order reaction. The higher electrocatalytic activity of Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrodes can be attributed to the higher oxygen evolution overpotential.

Abstract:Underlying the electrocatalytic mechanism has profound influences on designing novel efficient electro-catalytic interfaces and improving the efficiency of electrocatalytic degradation. In this study, a novel PbO2/Y2O3 nano-composite anode with hybrid interface was successfully prepared to investigate the electrocatalytic oxidation of malachite green (MG). The comprehensively analyzed XRD and XPS results confirmed that the partial incorporation of Y2O3 nanoparticles reduced the crystal size of PbO2 and increased the adsorption of hydroxyl oxygen (O-ads). The bipotential step chronoamperometry (BSCP) curve suggested that PbO2/Y2O3 anode possessed larger diffusion coefficients (D) and catalytic rate constants (K-cat). In addition, the incorporated Y2O3 nanoparticles promoted the electrocatalytic activity at the anode interface and enhanced the electron transfer as well as accelerated the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which afford the PbO2/Y2O3 anode high removal efficiency of MG and total organic carbon (TOC) with low energy consumption under the optimum conditions. Moreover, the electrocatalytic degradation mechanism and possible electrocatalytic mineralization pathway of MG on PbO2/Y2O3 anode were also discussed in detail, which provides a reference for the material science and environmental governance in the future. Abstract:The SnO2–Sb2O5–RuO2, α-PbO2 and β-PbO2 films were successfully deposited on Ti nets using thermal deposition and electrodeposition methods. It was found that the SnO2–Sb2O5–RuO2 interlayer played a very important role in enhancing the PbO2 films electrodeposition. The Ti/SnO2–Sb2O5–RuO2/α-PbO2/β-PbO2 electrodes obtained were superior not only in electrochemical stability but also in activity for pollutants degradation. The lifetime reached 59h under the accelerated life test conditions at a current density of 4A/cm2 in 0.5M H2SO4 solution. The COD removal and average current efficiencies were about 94% and 53% for degrading 500mg/L phenol at a current density of 100A/m2, and about 82% and 25% for degrading 1mM 4-chlorophenol at 200A/m2.
Fabrication and characterization of PEG-In2O3 modified PbO2 anode for electrochemical degradation of metronidazole

Abstract:An In2O3-PbO2 anode with high electrocatalytic activity was prepared in our previous study. However, the service life of In2O3-PbO2 anode needed to be further improved. Thus, a typical stabilizer of polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used to modify the In2O3-PbO2 anode in this study. Theoretical and experimental results show that a small amount of PEG promoted the doping of In2O3 into β-PbO2 film, while excessive PEG reduced the doping of In2O3. Doping a moderate amount of PEG not only reduced the PbO2 crystal size, improved the density of electrode film, reduced the charge transfer resistance, increased the oxygen evolution potential, number of active sites and capacity of •OH generation of In2O3-PbO2 anode, but also prolonged the service life of In2O3-PbO2 anode from 96 to 137 h. In the process of electrochemical degradation of metronidazole, the PEG/In2O3-PbO2 anode exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity. The degradation rate constant at the PEG/In2O3-PbO2 anode was 1.682 times higher than that at In2O3-PbO2 anode. After 60 min of electrolysis, COD and TOC removals reached up to 80.92% and 78.52%, respectively, much higher than those of In2O3-PbO2 anode (69.24% and 55.83%, respectively). Additionally, a total of 13 intermediates generated in the degradation process were identified by LC-MS, and two possible degradation pathways were proposed accordingly. Overall, this study offers a promising approach for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity and stability of the PbO2 anode.

The electrochemical properties, the activity and stability for anodic oxidation of various phenolic compounds, and the degradation mechanism on a novel beta-PbO2 electrode modified with fluorine resin were investigated. The anode life after modification was greatly improved to be more than 10 yr in common electrochemical current conditions. Such an anode was effective for partial degradation of phenolic compounds, but selective because reactive activities were varied with different substituents. Characterized by SEM and XRD, the crystal form of the anode was verified to be mainly beta-PbO2, and it hardly changed when used for p-nitrophenol degradation for around 320 h although there existed slow electrode corrosion. The active species generated during anodic oxidation were determined to be mainly hydroxyl radical and little ozone. The reactions between hydroxyl radical and phenolic compounds were proved to be electrophilic reactions, based on which a general electrochemical degradation mechanism for aromatic compounds was proposed. In general, such a novel anode has a good performance for organics degradation with perfect electrode life, showing potential for environmental application.

Abstract:Anodic oxidation electrodeposition is the primary way to prepare lead dioxide anode. The regulation of the external circuit for the reaction is a unique advantage of electrocatalytic reaction, which can regulate crystallization and accelerate the reaction process. In this study, lead dioxide coatings with uniform pore size distribution were quickly prepared on three different substrates by potential linear increase electrodeposition (PLIED). Morphology and structure analysis shows that the prepared electrodes have uniform porous morphology, and Ti/SnO 2 /PLIED has the smallest grain size. Three electrodes all display well degradation performance to azophloxine and diclofenac sodium. Ti/PLIED, and Ti/SnO 2 /PLIED are appreciated for degrading organics with a simple structure in low concentrations. At the same time, Ti/SnO 2 /PLIED is more suitable for complex organics in high concentrations. Electrochemical activity tests indicate the different mechanisms of the PLIED electrodes that build the other degradation performance. Three PLIED electrodes show excellent electrical and electrochemical stability during the cycle degradation process. The results provide a reference for the subsequent anodic oxidation electrodeposition research and the regulating effect of the external circuit on coating properties.

Abstract:Ti-substrate PbO2(Ti/PbO2), F--doped PbO2(Ti/F-PbO2), Fe3+-doped PbO2(Ti/Fe-PbO2) and F-, Fe3+-doped PbO2(Ti/F-Fe-PbO2) anodes were prepared by a thermal decomposition-electrodeposition technique. The anodes were characterized by XRD and EDX. The. electrochemical stability and electrocatalytic characteristics of the anodes were investigated through the accelerated life tests in H2SO4 solution and degradation of phenolic wastewater, respectively. The results show that Ti/F-PbO2 and Ti/Fe-PbO2 anodes almost have the same electrocatalytic activity; however, compared with Fe3+ doping, F- doping shows a better effect for the increase in the life of PbO2 anode. For Ti/F-Fe-PbO2, anode, Fe3+ doping enhances the conductive character of PbO2 anode; meanwhile F- doping enhances the stability of PbO2 anode. Moreover, compared with Ti/PbO2, Ti/F-PbO2 and Ti/Fe-PbO(2)anodes, Ti/F-Fe-PbO2 anode shows file highest degradation rate for 4-chlorphenol(4-CP). The influence of F- and Fe3+ doping on the performance and electrocatalytic activity Of PbO2 anodes is also discussed.

Abstract:Ti/SnO2-Sb/PbO2 anodes were electrodeposited from methanesulfonate-based baths, and the effect of dopants such as PVP and Fe on the surface morphology, phase composition, electrocatalytic activity, and stability was investigated. It is revealed that the inclusion of Fe effectively enhances the stability of PbO2 anode, while PVP can significantly improve its electrocatalytic activity. The Fe,PVP-codoped anode, Ti/SnO2-Sb/Fe-PVP-PbO2, exhibits higher stability and electrocatalytic activity compared to the respective inclusion of Fe and PVP. The gradation efficiency of methyl orange (MO) on the Ti/SnO2-Sb/Fe-PVP-PbO2 anode is affected by the applied current density and the initial MO concentration. During degradation, the azo structure of MO is first cleaved, resulting in the rapid decolorization of solution. Demethylated MO and the anion of sulfanilic acid are detected as intermediates, and thus a plausible pathway of MO degradation is proposed.

Fe Doped Γ-Mno2 of Anode for Lead Release Inhibition in Zinc Electrowinning

Abstract:Lead (Pb) anode has caused serious environmental pollution and resource waste problems in zinc (Zn) electrowinning. A novel functional Pb-based (Pb/MnO2) anode had been prepared successfully to reduce hazardous wastes of Pb-containing anode slime in our earlier published research. However, the impurity Fe2+ detected in the industrial preparation of this Pb/MnO2 anode was a tricky problem that cannot be ignored. Here, a Fe2+ doped MnO2 (Pb/Fe-MnO2) anode with its controllable preparation was studied. The results showed that Fe2+ participated in the transformation equilibrium reaction between Mn2+ and gamma-MnO2, which reduced the deposition efficiency and crystal size of gamma-MnO2. The internal structure of gamma-MnO2 film had been reconstructed by Fe2+, which increased the concentration of oxygen vacancy (1.6 times) and Mn3+ (5.5 times) on the surface of the composite anode. During 20 d of continuous Zn electrowinning, the anode slime accumulation of the Pb/Fe-MnO2 anode was reduced by 90 % and 40 %, respectively, compared with the traditional Pb anode and Pb/MnO2 anode. The impurity Fe2+ is generally thought to be harmful, but studies have shown that it can promote the OER of the anode surface and improve the reduction of Pb-containing anode slime. The mechanism of reconstruction engineering has revealed that two pathways of Fe2+ may affect the deposition efficiency of MnO2: electrochemical and chemical, while Fe could be involved in the film structure along with gamma-MnO2 co-deposition. The controlled impurity Fe2+ effect of MnO2 film anode will have a future application prospect for Pb release inhibition in industrial Zn electrowinning and related hydrometallurgy industries.
