Abstract:Let X be a random variable with finite second moment. We investigate the inequality: , where Z is a standard normal random variable. We prove that this inequality holds for many familiar infinitely divisible continuous distributions including the Laplace, Gumbel, Logistic, Pareto, infinitely divisible Weibull, Log-normal, Student's t and Inverse Gaussian distributions. Numerical results are given to show that the inequality with continuity correction also holds for some infinitely divisible discrete distributions.

Abstract:A quasi-infinitely divisible distribution on $\mathbb{R}$ is a probability distribution whose characteristic function allows a Lévy-Khintchine type representation with a "signed Lévy measure", rather than a Lévy measure. Quasi-infinitely divisible distributions appear naturally in the factorization of infinitely divisible distributions. Namely, a distribution $\mu$ is quasi-infinitely divisible if and only if there are two infinitely divisible distributions $\mu_1$ and $\mu_2$ such that $\mu_1 \ast \mu = \mu_2$. The present paper studies certain properties of quasi-infinitely divisible distributions in terms of their characteristic triplet, such as properties of supports, finiteness of moments, continuity properties and weak convergence, with various examples constructed. In particular, it is shown that the set of quasi-infinitely divisible distributions is dense in the set of all probability distributions with respect to weak convergence. Further, it is proved that a distribution concentrated on the integers is quasi-infinitely divisible if and only if its characteristic function does not have zeroes, with the use of the Wiener-Lévy theorem on absolutely convergent Fourier series. A number of fine properties of such distributions are proved based on this fact. A similar characterisation is not true for non-lattice probability distributions on the line.

Abstract:The object of this paper is to introduce and study the concept of quasi-geometric infinite divisibility for distributions on $\bf R_+$. These distributions arise as mixing distributions of (discrete) geometric infinitely divisible Poisson mixtures. Several characterizations and closure properties are presented. A connection between quasi-geometric infinite divisibility and log-convex (log-concave) distributions is established. A generalized notion of quasi-infinite divisibility is also discussed.

Abstract:We show that, under the long-tailedness of the densities of normalized Lévy measures, the densities of infinitely divisible distributions on the half line are subexponential if and only if the densities of their normalized Lévy measures are subexponential. Moreover, we prove that, under a certain continuity assumption, the densities of infinitely divisible distributions on the half line are subexponential if and only if their normalized Lévy measures are locally subexponential.

On the distribution of the norm of partitions

Abstract:The norm of an integer partition is defined as the product of its parts. This statistic was recently introduced by Schneider in connection to partition zeta functions. In this note, we use the method of moments to study the distribution of the norm under the uniform probability measure on partitions of $n$ as $n \to \infty$. We use singularity analysis to prove asymptotics for the moments and show as a result that the norm lacks a non-trivial limiting distribution on $[0,\infty)$.

Abstract:In this paper we study the states of Poisson type and infinitely divisible states on compact quantum groups. Each state of Poisson type is infinitely divisible, i.e., it admits $n$-th root for all $n\geq1$. The main result is that on finite quantum groups infinitely divisible states must be of Poisson type. This generalizes Böge's theorem concerning infinitely divisible measures (commutative case) and Parthasarathy's result on infinitely divisible positive definite functions (cocommutative case). Two proofs are given.

Abstract:Given a natural number $n$, let $\omega\left(n\right)$ denote the number of distinct prime factors of $n$, let $Z$ denote a standard normal variable, and let $P_{n}$ denote the uniform distribution on $\left\{ 1,\ldots,n\right\} $. The Erdős-Kac Theorem states that if $N\left(n\right)$ is a uniformly distributed variable on $\lbrace 1,\ldots,n \rbrace$, then $\omega\left(N\left(n\right)\right)$ is asymptotically normally distributed as $n\to \infty$ with both mean and variance equal to $\log \log n$. The contribution of this paper is a generalization of the Erdős-Kac Theorem to a larger class of random variables by considering perturbations of the uniform probability mass $1/n$ in the following sense. Denote by $\mathbb{P}_{n}$ a probability distribution on $\left\{ 1,\ldots,n\right\} $ given by $\mathbb{P}_{n}\left(i\right)=1/n+\varepsilon_{i,n}$. We provide sufficient conditions on $\varepsilon_{i,n}$ so that the number of distinct prime factors of a $\mathbb{P}_{n}$-distributed random variable is asymptotically normally distributed, as $n\to \infty$, with both mean and variance equal to $\log \log n$. Our main result is applied to prove that the number of distinct prime factors of a positive integer with the Harmonic$\left(n\right)$ distribution also tends to the normal distribution, as $n\to \infty$. In addition, we explore sequences of distributions on the natural numbers such that $\omega(n)$ is normally distributed in the limit. In addition, one of our theorems and its corollaries generalize a result from the literature involving the limit of $Zeta\left(s\right)$ distributions as the parameter $s \to 1$.

Abstract:The sub-linear expectation or called G-expectation is a non-linear expectation having advantage of modeling non-additive probability problems and the volatility uncertainty in finance. Let $\{X_n;n\ge 1\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables in a sub-linear expectation space $(\Omega , \mathscr {H}, \widehat{\mathbb {E}})$. Denote $S_n=\sum _{k=1}^n X_k$ and $V_n^2=\sum _{k=1}^n X_k^2$. In this paper, a moderate deviation for self-normalized sums, that is, the asymptotic capacity of the event $\{S_n/V_n \ge x_n \}$ for $x_n=o(\sqrt{n})$, is found both for identically distributed random variables and independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables. As an application, the self-normalized laws of the iterated logarithm are obtained. A Bernstein’s type inequality is also established for proving the law of the iterated logarithm.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we prove that for a transcendental meromorphic function f(z) on the complex plane, the inequality T(r, f) < 6N (r, 1/(f2 f(k)−1)) + S(r, f) holds, where k is a positive integer. Moreover, we prove the following normality criterion: Let ℱ be a family of meromorphic functions on a domain D and let k be a positive integer. If for each ℱ ∈ ℱ, all zeros of ℱ are of multiplicity at least k, and f2 f(k) ≠ 1 for z ∈ D, then ℱ is normal in the domain D. At the same time we also show that the condition on multiple zeros of f in the normality criterion is necessary.

Abstract:We consider a type of nonnormal approximation of infinitely divisible distributions that incorporates compound Poisson, Gamma, and normal distributions. The approximation relies on achieving higher orders of cumulant matching, to obtain higher rates of approximation error decay. The parameters of the approximation are easy to fix. The computational complexity of random sampling of the approximating distribution in many cases is of the same order as normal approximation. Error bounds in terms of total variance distance are derived. Both the univariate and the multivariate cases of the approximation are considered.
