Abstract:American Journal of Men's Health, Volume 18, Issue 1, January-February 2024. In Vietnam, erectile dysfunction (ED) is prevalent and recognized to be associated with mental disorders; however, societal taboos impede a comprehensive understanding of this connection. Our study aims to investigate the factors related to higher levels of anxiety and/or depression (HAD) in individuals with ED. Between November 2022 and March 2023, a face-to-face survey was conducted at the Center for Andrology of Viet Duc University Hospital, involving 390 patients diagnosed with ED. The survey included 51 questions covering general patient information, the International Index of Erectile Function-15 (IIEF-15), the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). The stepwise Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) method was used to identify factors associated with HAD. The study revealed an average age of 37.63 (11.84) years among participants, with a HAD prevalence of 17.69%. Several factors were associated with a higher likelihood of belonging to the HAD group in ED patients. These factors included non-office workers (OR: 1.11; 95% CI: [1.01, 1.21], p = .025), medium and high levels of work-related stress (OR: 1.23; [1.06, 1.44], p = .008; OR: 1.22; [1.04, 1.45], p = .018), multiple shameful experiences related to ED (OR: 1.16; [1.08, 1.25], p < .001), moderate and severe ED (OR: 1.17; [1.03, 1.32], p = .013; OR: 1.31; [1.14, 1.51], p < .001), and dissatisfaction with intercourse skills (OR: 1.09; [1.01, 1.17], p = .028). Our findings suggest a 16% higher likelihood of HAD status in individuals with multiple shameful experiences related to ED, while moderate and severe ED are associated with respective increases of 17% and 31% in the likelihood. These findings emphasize the importance of considering mental health in the care of individuals with ED.

[Erectile Dysfunction and Psychological Status in Infertile Males].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationship of erectile dysfunction (ED) with psychological factors in male patients with infertility.METHODS:We conducted a questionnaire investigation among 252 male patients with infertility, which involved the general condition, results of semen routine examination, sexual life, and scores in IIEF-5, self-reported 9-item patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9) and 7-item generalized anxiety disorder scale (GAD-7). We analyzed the prevalence of ED, depression, and anxiety and their correlations among the patients in comparison with 100 fertile male controls.RESULTS:In 245 of the infertility patients, the most common symptoms of depression and anxiety were "feeling tired or no vitality" and "easily getting worried or impatient", 20.4% of them with depression disorder and 42.9% with anxiety disorder. The PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores were significantly higher in the infertile males than in the normal fertile controls (P <0.05), and so was the incidence of ED (28.6% vs 12.4%, P <0.05), while the IIEF-5 scores were markedly lower in the former than in the latter group (P <0.01), and so were sex frequency and sexual satisfaction (P <0.05). The PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores were remarkably higher in the infertility patients with ED than in those without (P <0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed that the level of libido and results of semen routine examination were the risk factors for depression disorder, while age, education level, disease course and experience of assisted reproduction were those for anxiety disorder.CONCLUSIONS:Male infertility patients have a poorer mental health and a higher incidence of ED than normal fertile men, and there is some interaction between psychological status and ED prevalence.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Roughly 52% of men over the age of 40 have ED. However, our understanding of ED risk factors is constantly evolving. Objective The aim of this study is to provide a contemporary update of risk factors and characteristics of men presenting with erectile dysfunction (ED). Methods A retrospective review identified 576 men presenting to our tertiary academic center between 2009 and 2022 with the chief complaint of ED. Their medical charts were reviewed and analyzed for demographic information and treatment outcomes. Results The mean age of the cohort was 64.3 years (S.D. = 15) with initial testosterone levels of 310.5 (IQR = 231.8-437.2). The median symptom duration at presentation was 2 (IQR = 1-5) years, but more than half had already tried PDE5i therapy in the past (260/452, 57.5%, 95% CI (52.8-62.1%)). Men in the cohort had higher than national rates of hypertension (35.6%, 95% CI = 31.3-40.1%) and hyperlipidemia (30.5%, 95% CI = 26.4-34.0%) but the percentage of patients with diabetes was on par with national rates (14.7%, 95% CI = 11.6-18.2%). Men with Peyronie’s disease constituted 14.6% (95% CI = 11.5-18.2%) of the cohort (66/453) and 23 of those men had a radical prostatectomy (4.6%). Over half of the patients (310/576, 53.8%, 95% CI = 42.2-65.2%) were started on PDE5i oral therapy, of whom 61% (189/310) of men were satisfied with the effect. Conclusions Patients with ED are known to be more likely to have comorbid chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Prior studies have demonstrated that in men presenting with ED, 42% had hypertension, 20% had diabetes, and 42% had hyperlipidemia. However, our study reveals a lower rate of these risk factors than previously shown. In our study, men were waiting approximately 2 years before they sought treatment, which is 2 years earlier than prior literature. Finally, over half of the men had previously used a PDE5i upon presentation, which suggests that many men are presenting with more advanced ED. Abstract:Personality disorders may influence sexual behaviours and sexual dysfunction.Our main objective was to analyse the influence of personality disorders (PDs) in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) of psychological origin that fail to respond to andrological treatment with Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (IPDE5), assessing whether there are differences in sexual behaviours and response to psychosexual treatment.The research is designed as an ex post facto retrospective study with two groups. A control group of 23 men with ED without personality disorders and a group of 51 men with both ED and PDs.In the case sample, 34.30% of the participants presented more than one personality disorder. No significant differences were found in sexual behaviours except for heteromasturbation (men without PDs masturbated their partners more to satisfy them than men with PDs), and men with PDs considered themselves less premature ejaculators than the control group. Finally, 82.14% of the control group did well with psychosexual therapy compared to 53.85% of the PDs group.Psychosexual treatment of ED has a worse outcome if the men also have PDs. Strengths and Limitations: from a clinical standpoint, it is important to assess the presence of personality disorders in men with ED and to implement psychosexual strategies to improve the response to treatment in these cases. Confirmation of the results with a much larger sample becomes necessary.

Prevalence, Comorbidities, and Risk Factors of Erectile Dysfunction: Results from a Prospective Real-World Study in the United Kingdom

Abstract:Objectives: Assessment of erectile dysfunction (ED) burden could improve health outcomes associated with underlying cardiometabolic and psychological causes of ED. This study provided updated real-world evidence (RWE) on ED epidemiology and quantified healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) burden among men with ED in the UK. Methods: This cross-sectional, prospective real-world evidence study was conducted via a self-reported Internet survey in 2018 in the UK general population. Prevalence of ED was estimated; HCRU and HRQoL were compared between men with ED versus without ED via bivariate analysis. Results: Of 12,490 men included, 41.5% reported ED; 7.5% of men reported severe ED; ED was most prevalent in Wales (44.3%). Men with ED were older (54.1 ± 14.5 vs. 46.8 ± 14.1 years) and often reported modifiable lifestyle risk factors, including smoking (32.8% vs. 26.3%), drinking alcohol (76.1% vs. 71.0%), not exercising (21.7% vs. 19.4%), and being overweight or obese (64.9% vs. 54.6%). Additionally, men with ED more often reported ≥1 comorbid chronic conditions (73.7% vs. 47.7%), including hypertension (31.8% vs. 16.3%), hyperlipidemia (27.6% vs. 14.0%), depression (24.3% vs. 14.6%), anxiety (23.3% vs. 16.6%), and diabetes (15.9% vs. 6.1%) versus men without ED (all, p < 0.001). Nearly half of men with ED (45.3%) were not undergoing treatment for cardiometabolic or psychological comorbidities. Furthermore, men with ED more often reported ≥1 visit to physicians/nurse practitioners and pharmacists in the past year and had significantly lower SEAR total and domain scores than men without ED (all, p < 0.001). Conclusion: ED was highly prevalent in the UK affecting over a quarter of younger men. Cardiometabolic and psychological conditions were common among men with ED and often remained untreated. Higher proportions of modifiable lifestyle risk factors observed among men with ED present an opportunity for healthcare providers to help mitigate the risk of cardiometabolic diseases and incidence of ED.

Abstract:Background Childhood traumatic experiences have been associated with hypersexuality and sexual dysfunctions. However, the mediators of the interactions between these variables should be clarified in men. Aim This study aimed to investigate the interaction of early traumatic experiences, psychopathology, and sexuality with respect to erectile dysfunction (ED) and hypersexual behavior. The hypothesized model expected that traumatic experiences would be associated with hypersexual behavior and reduced sexual functioning through the mediation of body uneasiness and psychological distress. Methods The study was cross-sectional and observational. A total of 317 men were enrolled. Male patients with a primary complaint of ED and an indication for psychiatry referral represented the clinical sample (n = 116; mean ± SD age, 42.82 ± 16.89 years). Clinical classification was assessed with the Structured Interview on Erectile Dysfunction. The second sample (n = 201, 30.82 ± 11.94 years) was recruited from the general population. All participants were administered the following questionnaires: Brief Symptom Inventory, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire–Short Form, Hypersexual Behavior Inventory, Body Uneasiness Test–A, and 5-item International Index of Erectile Function. Outcomes Psychopathology and sexual functioning were assessed by a dimensional approach, and a multivariate model was computed by structural equation model analysis. Results When compared with the sample from the general population, the clinical sample exhibited a higher prevalence of early traumatic experiences, as measured by scores on the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire–Short Form (45.08 ± 14.25 vs 39.03 ± 10.22, F = 17.63, P < .001), and a higher tendency to engage in hypersexual behaviors (34.63 ± 13.55 vs 30.79 ± 12.44, F = 6.97, P < .01). Structural equation model analysis showed excellent fit indices indicating that early traumatic experiences predicted hypersexual behaviors and ED through the exacerbating mediating effect of body uneasiness and psychopathology. Clinical Implications Clinicians should not limit their attention to the behavioral level when assessing sexual dysfunction in men; rather, they should also consider the complex psychopathologic consequences of childhood trauma. Integrated treatments that address the potential presence of childhood trauma with its wider psychological correlates (eg, emotion dysregulation, body uneasiness) might improve treatment response. Strengths and Limitations The study reports novel data on the relationship among childhood maltreatment, male sexuality, and psychopathologic mediators with a dimensional assessment. However, the assessment was cross-sectional, and causality was mainly derived from previous studies. Conclusion The present study enriches the current literature, strengthening the hypothesis that childhood traumatic experiences significantly shape development and sexuality. Body uneasiness and psychopathology can both tax sexual functioning, as assessed by erectile functioning or hypersexuality.

Associations Between Online Pornography Consumption and Sexual Dysfunction in Young Men: Multivariate Analysis Based on an International Web-Based Survey

Abstract:Background: Expanding access to the internet has resulted in more and earlier consumption of online pornography. At the same time, a higher prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) among young men is seen. Increased pornography consumption has been suggested as a possible explanation for this rise. Objective: The aim of this study was to better understand associations between problematic pornography consumption (PPC) and ED. Methods: A 118-item survey was published online, and data collection took place between April 2019 and May 2020. Of the 5770 men who responded, the responses from 3419 men between 18 years old and 35 years old were analyzed. The survey used validated questionnaires such as the Cyber Pornography Addiction Test (CYPAT), International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5), and Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Concise (AUDIT-C). The estimated amount of porn watching was calculated. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed. For the multivariable analysis, a logistic regression model using a directed acyclic graph was used. Results: According to their IIEF-5 scores, 21.48% (444/2067) of our sexually active participants (ie, those who attempted penetrative sex in the previous 4 weeks) had some degree of ED. Higher CYPAT scores indicating problematic online pornography consumption resulted in a higher probability of ED, while controlling for covariates. Masturbation frequency seemed not to be a significant factor when assessing ED. Conclusions: This prevalence of ED in young men is alarmingly high, and the results of this study suggest a significant association with PPC. Abstract:Objectives The current study aimed at investigating the occurrence of erectile dysfunction (ED) as a potential component of the Long Covid-19 Syndrome, and at addressing the relationship between ED and Covid-19 acute phase severity, and psychological and organic comorbidities. Methods Thirty-three men (median age 55 years) were recruited 145±48.6 days after a SARS-CoV-2-negative nasopharyngeal swab. Erectile function was assessed by International Index of Erectile Function 6(IIEF-6) questionnaire, and by basal(bPDU) and dynamic(dPDU) penile duplex ultrasonography, particularly including peak systolic velocity(PSV) and end diastolic velocity (EDV). Neuro-psychological symptoms were assessed by BDI, STAY, FSS, AES. Moreover, PDU parameters of 13 Covid-19 patients with IIEF-6-confirmed ED were compared to 13 control patients matched for age, IIEF-6 score and comorbidities. Results In the Covid-19 group 18/28(64.3%) patients were affected by ED at IIEF-6, 13(46.4%) had mild, 3(10.7%) moderate and 2(7.1%) severe ED. 11/32(34.4%) patients were affected by arteriogenic ED at bPDU and 10/21(47.6%) at dPDU, with 6(28.6%) mild-moderate and 4(19.0%) severe arteriogenic ED. IIEF-6 score was significantly lower in patients experiencing vs not experiencing myalgia during Covid-19 acute phase(22 vs 26; p=0.041). Mean dPSV was significantly lower (24.55±5.25 cm/s vs 32.13±5.40 cm/s; p=0.025) and prevalence of arteriogenic ED significantly higher [4/4(100%) vs 6/17(35.3%); p=0.035] in patients treated vs not treated for diabetes. EDV was negatively correlated with pO2(r=-0.762; p=0.028) and positively correlated with Chung score at chest CT(r=0.554; p=0.049). Conclusions The results of the current study demonstrated for the first time a high prevalence of ED, higher than that reported in the general population, in patients recovered from Covid-19, as assessed by IIEF-6 questionnaire and PDU. The current study also highlighted a potential contribution of tissue hypoxia in the Covid-19 acute phase to the veno-occlusive deficit of corpora cavernosa. Is It All in My Head? Self-reported Psychogenic Erectile Dysfunction and Depression Are Common Among Young Men Seeking Advice on Social Media

Abstract:Objective: To characterize themes of discussion and specific concerns expressed by users of an internet erectile dysfunction (ED) community using a mixed-methodology approach involving quantitative natural language processing (NLP) and qualitative annotation of content. Methods: We extracted posts and responses from the Reddit community r/ErectileDysfunction (3100 members) during June 2018 to May 2019. We applied an NLP technique called the meaning extraction method with principal component analysis to computationally identify themes of discussion. We manually annotated a subset (30%) of posts based on NLP-derived themes to evaluate specific content. Results: We analyzed 329 posts and 1702 responses. Meaning extraction method with principal component analysis identified key themes: hypogonadism symptoms, masturbation/sex, evaluation/treatment, alternative therapies, and partner factors (posts); and performance anxiety, hypogonadism evaluation, pornography, and pharmacotherapy (responses). Subset annotation of 100 posts revealed a median author age of 24 years (Interquartile Range (IQR): 20-31). 48% of discussants believed their ED was psychogenic, 38% reported depressive symptoms, and 2% mentioned self-harm/suicidality either attributed to or associated with their ED. 28% of discussants reported seeing a health care professional for ED, and 20% attempted abstinence from pornography/masturbation as a self-prescribed intervention. Conclusion: Social media platforms like Reddit empower young men to discuss ED concerns. Fewer than one-third reported seeing a doctor for ED, suggesting that men turn to peers on the internet first, despite risk of misinformation. A majority attributed symptoms to psychological etiologies and excess pornography/masturbation. Depression, self-harm, and suicide emerged as potent concerns. These data underscore the importance of engaging proactively with young men, both in the consultation room and online.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the association between psychological disorders and erectile dysfunction (ED) in patients with different degrees of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). This was a retrospective study conducted from June 2017 to October 2019 and included 182 outpatients. Patients were interviewed using the Structured Interview on Erectile Dysfunction (SIEDY) for pathogenic quantification. The National Institutes of Health-Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI) and the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) were used for the evaluation of CP/CPPS and ED. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were used to assess anxiety symptoms and depressive symptoms. The number of patients with mild CP/CPPS and mild ED, mild CP/CPPS and moderate-to-severe ED, moderate-to-severe CP/CPPS and mild ED, and moderate-to-severe CP/CPPS and moderate-to-severe ED was 69 (37.9%), 36 (19.8%), 35 (19.2%), and 42 (23.1%), respectively. The corresponding PHQ-9 scores of the four groups were 6.22, 7.19, 10.69, and 7.71, respectively. The corresponding GAD-7 scores of the four groups were 5.26, 6.31, 8.77, and 6.36, respectively. Among patients with moderate-to-severe CP/CPPS, the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores of the moderate-to-severe ED group were significantly lower than those of the mild ED group (P = 0.007 and P = 0.010, respectively). The prevalence of ED and premature ejaculation (PE) in patients with moderate-to-severe CP/CPPS was significantly higher than that in patients with mild CP/CPPS (P = 0.001 and P = 0.024, respectively). Our findings proved that the severity of ED was negatively associated with psychological symptoms in outpatients with moderate-to-severe CP/CPPS.

Abstract:Abstract Background Many infertile couples might experience erectile dysfunction (ED) and significant changes in the quality of sexual life and psychological state though information is limited in secondary infertile men in China. To determine whether primary or secondary infertility is associated with ED, psychological disorders, and sexual performance. Methods This was a cross-sectional survey conducted at the Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (06/2019-01/2020). The participants completed a questionnaire including general information, sexual life, simplified International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7). Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify the factors associated with ED, depression, and anxiety. Results ED was more frequent in secondary vs. primary infertility (46.5 % vs. 26.7 %, P < 0.001). Compared with men with primary infertility, those with secondary infertility showed lower IIEF-5 scores ( P < 0.001), higher occurrence of TOIF ( P = 0.001), had a higher awareness of partner’s ovulation when having ED ( P = 0.001), lower GAD-7 scores ( P = 0.016), lower libido ( P = 0.005), fewer intercourses per month ( P = 0.001) and a lower sexual satisfaction score ( P = 0.027). In the multivariate analysis, primary infertility was found to be an independent risk factor of anxiety (OR: 1.812, 95 %CI: 1.015–3.236). Some overlap is observed in factors associated with ED, psychological disorders, and sexual performance between primary and secondary infertility, but some factors are distinct. Conclusions The prevalence of ED in secondary infertility men was higher than that of primary infertility men, and the quality of sexual life was decreased. Primary infertility is an independent risk factor of anxiety.

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity and its relationship to the autonomic nervous system in patients with psychogenic erectile dysfunction

Abstract:Background: Psychological stress and its two stress response systems, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the autonomic nervous system (ANS), are closely related to psychogenic erectile dysfunction (pED). However, the analyses of perceived stress and stress systems in pED patients need to be more in-depth, especially the interactions between them. Methods: Our study included 75 patients with pEDs and 75 healthy men. The International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) and the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) were used for assessing the severity of ED and perceived stress. All participants collected saliva samples on three consecutive days at eight specific times with strict reference to the time of morning awakening for measuring cortisol parameters and wore electrocardiography for 24 h to derive heart rate variability (HRV). Results: The PSS-10 scores of pED patients were significantly higher than the control group ( p <0.001). Although PSS-10 and IIEF-5 scores were negatively correlated in pED patients, there was no statistical significance between them ( r =−0.049, p =0.677). Compared with the control group, the HRV parameters of pED patients were significantly increased in LF/HF ratio ( p =0.014) but significantly decreased in LF, HF, and pNN50 ( p <0.001). However, the two groups had no statistically significant differences in cortisol variables (all p >0.05). The interaction between sympathovagal modulation (HF, rMSSD) and cortisol awakening response (CAR AUCi) explained significantly greater variance in perceived stress than either stress system alone. Higher parasympathetic activity combined with a higher cortisol awakening response was associated with greater perceived stress. Conclusion: Our results suggested that the interrelation between ANS and HPA axis activity might enhance our comprehension of how stress affected the physical and mental health of pED patients.

The relationship between social support and erectile dysfunction in middle-aged and older males

Abstract:Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent condition that affects middle-aged and older men, impacting their sexual health and overall wellbeing. We aimed to investigate the relationship between social support and ED among this specific population. Methods: Data were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Social support was assessed through various dimensions, including emotional support, material support, and network support. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to examine the association between social support and ED, and a propensity-score-matched (PSM) analysis was further conducted. Results: Among 1938 middle-aged and older males in the United States, 49.9% had a history of ED. ED was more prevalent in older individuals and those with comorbidities such as hypertension, prostate disease, higher serum creatinine level, and mental problems. Males with lower social support scores had a higher weighted rate of ED ( P < 0.001). After adjusting for multiple variables in logistic regression analysis, a higher social support score was associated with a 19% lower likelihood of ED (weighted odds ratio [OR] 0.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.66–0.98, P = 0.032). The association remained consistent after propensity score matching (OR 0.80, 95% CI 0.66–0.98, P = 0.028). Conclusion: Social support appears to be associated with a reduced risk of ED in middle-aged and older men. Further research is needed to better understand this relationship and explore interventions that enhance social support, potentially leading to improved sexual health outcomes.

Abstract:Introduction. Although infertility is known to be associated with psychological and sexual problems, the relationship between these two aspects in infertile men has not been well investigated. Aim. To investigate the incidence of sexual dysfunction and psychological burden, and their possible associations in infertile men. Methods. From June 2009 to June 2012, a total of 1,468 infertile men and 942 fertile men were evaluated. Premature ejaculation (PE) and erectile dysfunction (ED) were measured by the PE diagnostic tool (PEDT), the intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) and the international index of erectile function (IIEF)-5. Anxiety and depression, which reflect the degree of psychological burden, were measured by the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS), respectively. Main Outcome Measures. PE and ED were measured by the PEDT, IELT, and IIEF-5. Anxiety and depression were measured by the SAS and SDS, respectively. Results. The incidences of PE and ED in the infertile group were significantly higher than those in the fertile group (PE: 19.01% vs. 10.93%, P < 0.001; ED: 18.05% vs. 8.28%, P < 0.001). In addition, anxiety and depression were more prevalent in infertile than fertile men (Anxiety: 38.01% vs. 26.65%, P < 0.001; Depression: 15.74% vs. 10.08%, P < 0.001). Furthermore, after adjusting for age in the infertile group, the PEDT score was positively associated with anxiety (adjusted r = 0.57; P < 0.001) and depression (adjusted r = 0.54; P < 0.001). Moreover, the IELT were negatively associated with anxiety (adjusted r = -0.40; P < 0.001) and depression (adjusted r = -0.52; P < 0.001). Similar negative relationships were also observed between the IIEF-5 score and anxiety (adjusted r = -0.49; P < 0.001) or depression (adjusted r = -0.50; P < 0.001). Conclusion. This is the first study to systematically evaluate the incidence of sexual dysfunction and psychological burden, and their possible associations in infertile men in China. Further in-depth studies are needed to confirm and extend these results.

Abstract:BackgroundAdult separation anxiety disorder (ASAD) has been identified recently, but there is a paucity of data about its prevalence and associated characteristics amongst anxiety patients. This study assessed the prevalence and risk factor profile associated with ASAD in an anxiety clinic.MethodsClinical psychologists assigned 520 consecutive patients to DSM-IV adult anxiety subcategories using the SCID. We also measured demographic factors and reports of early separation anxiety (the Separation Anxiety Symptom Inventory and a retrospective diagnosis of childhood separation anxiety disorder). Other self-report measures included the Adult Separation Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire (ASA-27), the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scales (DASS-21), personality traits measured by the NEO PI-R and the Work and Social Adjustment Scale. These measures were included in three models examining for overall differences and then by gender: Model 1 compared the conventional SCID anxiety subtypes (excluding PTSD and OCD because of insufficient numbers); Model 2 divided the sample into those with and without ASAD; Model 3 compared those with ASAD with the individual anxiety subtypes in the residual group.ResultsPatients with ASAD had elevated early separation anxiety scores but this association was unique in females only. Except for social phobia in relation to some comparisons, those with ASAD recorded more severe symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, higher neuroticism scores, and greater levels of disability.ConclusionsPatients with ASAD attending an anxiety clinic are highly symptomatic and disabled. The findings have implications for the classification, clinical identification and treatment of adult anxiety disorders.

Abstract:The importance and satisfaction associated with 21 characteristics of a nurse faculty position were examined, using 1974 questionnaire data from schools of nursing at four major state universities. Teaching, supportive colleagues, keeping clinical knowledge current, and faculty autonomy were seen as the most important aspects of the job by the 154 nursing educators surveyed, while salary, fringe benefits, and other extrinsic rewards ranked substantially lower in importance. Satisfaction with the more important conditions was generally low, with lack of faculty participation in decision making a particularly noteworthy source of dissatisfaction. Importance and satisfaction ranking of the 21 characteristics remained fairly stable across the four schools and across groups broken down by martial status, experience, and other personal attributes. Increased professional autonomy, it was suggested, would benefit faculty morale, recruitment, retention, and overall effectiveness in nursing education.

Abstract:Objectives Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a fairly common problem, affecting millions of men depending on their age group. It is a common difficulty to differentiate between different forms of ED. When we say about the psychogenic form of ED, we should remember that the ways that people think, feel, and behave - can powerfully affect their erectile response. Consequently, objective assessment of psychogenic factors can help physicians in the correct diagnostic and treatment of patients with ED. Methods In our study, participants were 109 men with ED aged 25 to 45. All patients had some emotional problems, due to which a psychodiagnostic. For assessment of psycho condition, we used four diagnostic tests: MMPI-I, STAI (State-trait Anxiety Inventory), Beck's Depression Inventory, and OCI-R (Obsessive-compulsive-inventory-revised). Results As the result of the examination, we detected anxiety disorder in 38 patients. 10 patients had dysthymia, and 14 had depression. Five patients had Obsessive-compulsive disorder. In 43 men with ED, we could not find any psychogenic problems. Psychodiagnostic allowed us to suppose that 66 patients (60%) had psychogenic ED and 43 (40%) had organic ED. Together with PDE 5 – inhibitors, all 66 patients with psychogenic ED received Serotonin and Dopamine Selective reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI). 100 mg Trazodone per day had received in 43 patients. 19 patients received 30 mg Duloxetine per day, and four received 10 mg. Citalopram per day. The treatment mentioned above was very successful. After several months of treatment, erectile function had been restored. Also, anxiety and depression decreased. The well-being and quality of sexual life improved. Conclusions The psychodiagnostic examination we used in our study is quite an effective objective method for differential diagnoses between the psychogenic and organic forms of ED among 25-45 aged men. It can be considered a simple and routine tool in the algorithm for diagnosing and treating ED. Conflicts of Interest There is no conflict of interest.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the prevalence of ED and the associated factors in infertile males.METHODS:We continuously selected 896 infertile males present at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Dongzhimen Hospital and the Sixth Medical Center of PLA General Hospital and evaluated the erectile function of the patients using a self-designed questionnaire and IIEF-5. We analyzed the ED-associated factors by multivariate analysis.RESULTS:Based on the results of questionnaire investigation, there were 416 cases of ED in the 896 infertile males (46.43%), including 23 (2.56%) severe, 38 (4.24%) moderate, 109 (12.17%) mild-moderate and 246 (27.46%) mild cases. Multivariate analysis indicated that the prevalence rate of ED was correlated positively with obesity, hypertension and diabetes, and negatively with husband-wife affection and the frequency of sexual intercourse.CONCLUSIONS:The prevalence rate of ED is high in infertile males, mostly mild, and correlated with husband-wife affection, the frequency of sexual intercourse and some diseases.
