Abstract:The tea cultivar 'Xiaoxueya', a temperature-sensitive albino mutant, is a rare tea germplasm because of its highly enriched amino acid content and brisk flavour. In comparison with green leaf tissues of 'Xiaoxueya', albino leaves show significant deficiency in chlorophylls and carotenoids and severely disrupted chloroplasts. Furthermore, the accumulation of quality-related secondary metabolites is altered in 'Xiaoxueya' albino leaf, with significantly increased contents of total amino acids, theanine, and glutamic acid and significantly decreased contents of alkaloids, catechins, and polyphenols. To uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying albinism and quality-related constituent variation in 'Xiaoxueya' leaves, expression profiles of pivotal genes involved in the biosynthetic pathways of pigments, caffeine, theanine, and catechins were investigated by quantitative real-time PCR technology. The results revealed that suppressed expression of the chloroplast-localized 1-deoxy-D-xylulose-5-phosphate synthase genes DXS1 and DXS2 involved in the 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol-4-phosphate (MEP) pathway and protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase genes POR1 and POR2 involved in the chlorophyll biosynthetic pathway is responsible for the pigment deficiency in 'Xiaoxueya' albino leaf. Additionally, the low expression of the tea caffeine synthase gene (TCS) involved in caffeine biosynthesis and the chalcone synthase genes CHS1, CHS2, and CHS3, the chalcone isomerase gene CHI, the flavonoid 3',5'-hydroxylase genes F3'5'H1 and F3'5'H2, and the anthocyanidin reductase genes ANR1 and ANR2 involved in the flavonoid pathway is related to the reduction in alkaloid and catechin levels in 'Xiaoxueya' albino leaves.

Abstract:The young shoots of the tea plant Baiye No. 1 display an albino phenotype in the early spring under low environmental temperatures, and the leaves re-green like those of common tea cultivars during the warm season. Periodic albinism is precisely regulated by a complex gene network that leads to metabolic differences and enhances the nutritional value of tea leaves. Here, we identified messenger RNAs (mRNAs), long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs), and microRNAs (miRNAs) to construct competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory networks. We performed whole-transcriptome sequencing of 12 samples from four periods (Bud, leaves not expanded; Alb, albino leaves; Med, re-greening leaves; and Gre, green leaves) and identified a total of 6325 differentially expressed mRNAs (DEmRNAs), 667 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs), 1702 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs), and 122 differentially expressed circRNAs (DEcircRNAs). Furthermore, we constructed ceRNA networks on the basis of co-differential expression analyses which comprised 112, 35, 38, and 15 DEmRNAs, DEmiRNAs, DElncRNAs, and DEcircRNAs, respectively. Based on the regulatory networks, we identified important genes and their interactions with lncRNAs, circRNAs, and miRNAs during periodic albinism, including the ceRNA regulatory network centered on miR5021x, the GAMYB-miR159-lncRNA regulatory network, and the NAC035-miR319x-circRNA regulatory network. These regulatory networks might be involved in the response to cold stress, photosynthesis, chlorophyll synthesis, amino acid synthesis, and flavonoid accumulation. Our findings provide novel insights into ceRNA regulatory mechanisms involved in Baiye No. 1 during periodic albinism and will aid future studies of the molecular mechanisms underlying albinism mutants.

Abstract:Albino became a novel kind of tea cultivar in China recently. In this study, transcriptome and whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) were employed to investigate the shading effects on leaf color conversion and biosynthesis of three major secondary metabolites in the albino tea cultivar "Yujinxiang". The increased leaf chlorophyll level was likely the major cause for shaded leaf greening from young pale or yellow leaf. In comparison with the control, the total catechin level of the shading group was significantly decreased and the abundance of caffeine was markedly increased, while the theanine level was nearly not influenced. Meanwhile, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) enriched in some biological processes and pathways were identified by transcriptome analysis. Furthermore, whole-genome DNA methylation analysis revealed that the global genomic DNA methylation patterns of the shading period were remarkably altered in comparison with the control. In addition, differentially methylated regions (DMRs) and the DMR-related DEG analysis indicated that the DMR-related DEGs were the critical participants in biosynthesis of the major secondary metabolites. These findings suggest that DNA methylation is probably responsible for changes in the contents of the major secondary metabolites in Yujinxiang.

Abstract:Abstract Background White leaf No.1 is a typical albino tea cultivar grown in China and it has received increased attention in recent years due to the fact that white leaves containing a high level of amino acids, which are very important components affecting the quality of tea drink. According to the color of its leaves, the development of this tea cultivar is divided into three stages: the pre-albinistic stage, the albinistic stage and the regreening stage. To understand the intricate mechanism of periodic albinism, a comparative proteomic approach based on two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) and mass spectrometry was adopted first time to identify proteins that changed in abundance during the three developmental periods. Results The 2-DE results showed that the expression level of 61 protein spots varied markedly during the three developmental stages. To analyze the functions of the significantly differentially expressed protein spots, 30 spots were excised from gels and analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight-tandem mass spectrometry. Of these, 26 spots were successfully identified. All identified protein spots were involved in metabolism of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur, photosynthesis, protein processing, stress defense and RNA processing, indicating these physiological processes may play crucial roles in the periodic albinism. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR analysis was used to assess the transcriptional level of differentially expressed proteins. In addition, the ultrastructural studies revealed that the etioplast-chloroplast transition in the leaf cell of White leaf No. 1 was inhibited and the grana in the chloroplast was destroyed at the albinistic stage. Conclusions In this work, the proteomic analysis revealed that some proteins may have important roles in the molecular events involved in periodic albinism of White leaf No. 1 and identificated many attractive candidates for further investigation. In addition, the ultrastructural studies revealed that the change in leaf color of White leaf No. 1 might be a consequence of suppression of the etioplast-chloroplast transition and damage to grana in the chloroplast induced by temperature. These results provide much useful information to improve our understanding of the mechanism of albinism in the albino tea cultivar.

Effect of Shading on Gene Expression Profile in Leaf of Tea Cultivar "Huangjinya"

Abstract:Gene expression profiles in shaded and unshaded leaves of tea cultivar 'Huangjinya',a light-induced albino tea cultivar,were analyzed.Total reads in the expression profile was 5557292 in unshaded leaf and 6309925 in shaded leaf,with total 79797 unigene.1392 genes showed significant difference in expression level,among which 902 genes were up-regulated and 490 down-regulated in shaded leaf.214 genes were completely inhibited in unshaded leaf and 72 genes were completely inhibited by shading.The genes which were inhibited by strong sunlight involved in genes of light-inducible protein CPRF2,endopeptidase inhibitor,transporter of amino acid and sucrose,type 2 ribosome-inactivating protein and sugar binding protein.Expression of chalcone synthase gene 3(CHS3) was inhibited by sunlight shading.The inhibition of light-inducible protein CPRF2 expression by strong sunlight suggests that the tolerance to strong light stress was weak in cultivar 'Huangjinya' and this resulted in its albinism.The results also shows that there were about 1/3 difference in base site between cultivars 'Huangjinya' and 'fudingdabai'.

Abstract:Introduction: Yanling Yinbiancha, a cultivar of Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze, is an evergreen woody perennial with characteristic albino leaves. A mutant variant with green leaves on branches has been recently identified. The molecular mechanisms underlying this color variation remain unknown. Methods: We aimed to utilize omics tools to decipher the molecular basis for this color variation, with the ultimate goal of enhancing existing germplasm and utilizing it in future breeding programs. Results and discussion: Albinotic leaves exhibited significant chloroplast degeneration and reduced carotenoid accumulation. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis of the two variants revealed 1,412 differentially expressed genes and 127 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs). Enrichment analysis for DEGs suggested significant enrichment of pathways involved in the biosynthesis of anthocyanins, porphyrin, chlorophyll, and carotenoids. To further narrow down the causal variation for albinotic leaves, we performed a conjoint analysis of metabolome and transcriptome and identified putative candidate genes responsible for albinism in C. sinensis leaves. 12, 7, and 28 DEGs were significantly associated with photosynthesis, porphyrin/chlorophyll metabolism, and flavonoid metabolism, respectively. Chlorophyllase 2 , Chlorophyll a-Binding Protein 4A , Chlorophyll a-Binding Protein 24 , Stay Green Regulator , Photosystem II Cytochrome b559 subunit beta along with transcription factors AP2 , bZIP , MYB , and WRKY were identified as a potential regulator of albinism in Yanling Yinbiancha. Moreover, we identified Anthocyanidin reductase and Arabidopsis Response Regulator 1 as DEGs influencing flavonoid accumulation in albino leaves. Identification of genes related to albinism in C. sinensis may facilitate genetic modification or development of molecular markers, potentially enhancing cultivation efficiency and expanding the germplasm for utilization in breeding programs.

A normal tea plant (<em class="a-plus-plus">Camellia sinensis</em> cv. quntizhong) with one albino branch was discovered in a local tea plantation in Huangshan, Anhui, China. The pure albino leaves on this special branch had accumulated a fairly high content of amino acids, especially theanine (45.31 mg/g DW), and had a low concentration of polyphenols and an extremely low chlorophyll (Chl) content compared with control leaves. Ultrastructural observation of an albino leaf revealed no chloroplasts, whereas it was viable in the control leaf. RNA sequencing and differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis were performed on the albino leaves and on control leaves from a normal green branch. The related genes involved in theanine and polyphenol biosynthesis were also investigated in this study. DEG expression patterns in Chl biosynthesis or degradation, carotenoid biosynthesis or degradation, chloroplast development, and biosynthesis were influenced in the albino leaves. Chloroplast deletion in albino leaves had probably destroyed the balance of carbon and nitrogen metabolism, leading to a high accumulation of free amino acids and a low concentration of polyphenols in the albino leaves. The obtained results can provide insight into the mechanism underlying this special albino branch phenotype, and are a valuable contribution toward understanding the albino mechanism in tea plants.</p> </span>

Comparative transcriptome database for Camellia sinensis reveals genes related to the cold sensitivity and albino mechanism of 'Anji Baicha'

Abstract:Tea, a globally popular beverage, contains various beneficial secondary metabolites. Tea plants (Camellia sinensis) exhibit diverse genetic traits across cultivars, impacting yield, adaptability, morphology, and secondary metabolite composition. Many tea cultivars have been the subject of much research interest, which have led to the accumulation of publicly available RNA-seq data. As such, it has become possible to systematically summarize the characteristics of different cultivars at the transcriptomic level, identify functional genes, and infer gene functions through co-expression analysis. Here, the transcriptomes of 9 tea cultivars were assembled, and comparative analysis was conducted on the coding sequences of 13 cultivars. To give access to this data, we present TeaNekT (https://teanekt.sbs.ntu.edu.sg/), a web resource that facilitates the prediction of gene functions of various tea cultivars. We used TeaNekT to perform a cross-cultivar comparison of co-expressed gene clusters and tissue-specific gene expression. We observed that 'Anji Baicha' possesses the highest number of cultivar-specific genes and the second-highest number of expanded genes. These genes in 'Anji Baicha' tend to be enriched in functions associated with cold stress response, chloroplast thylakoid structure, and nitrogen metabolism. Notably, we identified three significantly expanded homologous genes in 'Anji Baicha' encoding the ICE1, SIZ1, and MAPKK2, which are closely associated with the cold sensitivity of 'Anji Baicha'. Additionally, one significantly expanded homologous gene in 'Anji Baicha' encoding regulatory factor RIQ may play a crucial role in the abnormal chloroplast structure and absence of thylakoid membranes in 'Anji Baicha'.

Abstract:AbstractAs one of the world’s most important beverage crops, tea plants (Camellia sinensis) are renowned for their unique flavors and numerous beneficial secondary metabolites, attracting researchers to investigate the formation of tea quality. With the increasing availability of transcriptome data on tea plants in public databases, conducting large-scale co-expression analyses has become feasible to meet the demand for functional characterization of tea plant genes. However, as the multidimensional noise increases, larger-scale co-expression analyses are not always effective. Analyzing a subset of samples generated by effectively downsampling and reorganizing the global sample set often leads to more accurate results in co-expression analysis. Meanwhile, global-based co-expression analyses are more likely to overlook condition-specific gene interactions, which may be more important and worthy of exploration and research. Here, we employed the k-means clustering method to organize and classify the global samples of tea plants, resulting in clustered samples. Metadata annotations were then performed on these clustered samples to determine the “conditions” represented by each cluster. Subsequently, we conducted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) separately on the global samples and the clustered samples, resulting in global modules and cluster-specific modules. Comparative analyses of global modules and cluster-specific modules have demonstrated that cluster-specific modules exhibit higher accuracy in co-expression analysis. To measure the degree of condition specificity of genes within condition-specific clusters, we introduced the correlation difference value (CDV). By incorporating the CDV into co-expression analyses, we can assess the condition specificity of genes. This approach proved instrumental in identifying a PPR-type RNA editing factor gene (CWM1) that specifically functions during the bud-prealbinism stage of theCamellia sinensiscultivar “Anji Baicha”. We hypothesize that this gene may be upregulated and play a role in inhibiting chloroplast development, ultimately resulting in albino phenotypes in “Anji Baicha”.

Abstract:Albino tea plants are mutants that grow albino young leaves owing to lack of chlorophylls under certain environmental conditions. There are two types of albino tea plants grown in production, i.e., light- and temperature-sensitive albino tea cultivars. The former grows albino leaves in yellow color under intensive sunlight conditions and the later grows albino leaves with white mesophyll and greenish vein as the environmental temperature is below 20 °C. Both albino teas attract great attention because of their high levels of amino acids and the “umami” taste. There have been many studies focusing on the temperature-sensitive albino tea plants, whereas little attention has been given to the light-sensitive albino tea cultivars. The characteristics of the albino tea cultivars and the mechanism underlying them were reviewed in the present article based on the published literatures, including chemical compositions, morphological characteristics, and molecular genetic mechanism.

Abstract:Light sensitive albino tea cultivar ‘Jinguang’ ( Camellia sinensis ) which grows albinism leaf in yellow colour, results to high level of amino acids but low levels of photosynthetic pigments including chlorophylls, neoxanthin, violaxanthin, phytoxanthin and β-carotene when it is exposed to high sunlight illumination in the summer season. In this case, the chloroplasts showed partially lysed, with few thylakoids. The leaf albinism was reverted when the leaf was shielded from direct illumination of strong sunlight. It is considered that the blocked development of chloroplast and photosynthetic pigments in the albinism leaf inhibited the biosynthesis of leaf proteins, resulting in an accumulation of free amino acids. Studies on Transcriptome in Tea Cultivars Fudingdabai and Xiaoxueya

Abstract:The transcriptome of tea leaf was constructed using a tea cultivar Fudingdabai and a low-temperature induced albino tea cultivar Xiaoxueya as materials.There were 79 797 unigenes in total,among which 11 371 with the length above 1 000 bp accounted for 14.25%.There was 6 439 SSRs and 84.32% of which was perfect with 1-3 base pairs.Gene expression showed that there were 1 821 up-regulated genes and 1 779 down-regulated genes.Analysis of differential gene expression by gene ontology(GO) and cluster of orthologous groups(COG) revealed that the variations during posttranslational modification taking place in side cells might have caused the albino in tea cultivar Xiaoxueya.

Abstract:The light-sensitive albino tea plant can produce pale-yellow shoots with high levels of amino acids which are suitable to process high-quality tea. In order to understand the mechanism of the albino phenotype formation, the changes in the physio-chemical characteristics, chloroplast ultrastructure, chlorophyll-binding proteins, and the relevant gene expression were comprehensively investigated in the leaves of the light-sensitive albino cultivar 'Huangjinya' ('HJY') during short-term shading treatment. In the content of photosynthetic pigments, the ultrastructure of the chloroplast, and parameters of the photosynthesis in the leaves of 'HJY' could be gradually normalized along with the extension of the shading time, resulting in the leaf color transformed from pale yellow to green. BN-PAGE and SDS-PAGE revealed that function restoration of the photosynthetic apparatus was attributed to the proper formation of the pigment-protein complexes on the thylakoid membrane that benefited from the increased levels of the LHCII subunits in the shaded leaves of 'HJY', indicating the low level of LHCII subunits, especially the lack of the Lhcb1 might be responsible for the albino phenotype of the 'HJY' under natural light condition. The deficiency of the Lhcb1 was mainly subject to the strongly suppressed expression of the Lhcb1.x which might be modulated by the chloroplast retrograde signaling pathway GUN1 (GENOMES UNCOUPLED 1)-PTM (PHD type transcription factor with transmembrane domains)-ABI4 (ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE 4).

Abstract:The linear and nonlinear interactions between spin waves (magnons) and acoustic waves (phonons) in magnetostrictive materials provide an exciting opportunity for realizing novel microwave signal processing devices and spintronic circuits. Here, we demonstrate the parametric pumping of spin waves by acoustic waves in a ferrimagnet, the possibility of which has long been theoretically anticipated but never experimentally realized. Spin waves propagating in a thin film of yttrium iron garnet—a magnetostrictive ferrimagnet with low spin and acoustic wave damping—are pumped using an acoustic resonator driven at frequencies near twice the spin wave frequency. The observation of a counterpropagating idler wave and a distinct pump threshold that increases quadratically with frequency nondegeneracy are evidence of a nonlinear parametric pumping process consistent with classical theory. This demonstration of acoustic parametric pumping lays the groundwork for developing new spintronic and microwave signal processing devices based on amplification and manipulation of spin waves by efficient, spatially localized acoustic transducers.
Conversion Obstacle from Mg-protoporphyrin IX to Protochlorophyllide Might Be Responsible for Chlorophyll-Deficient Phenotype of the Huangjinya’s Albino Offspring

Abstract:The albino tea cultivar is one of the most important germplasms for key gene mining and high-quality tea producing. In order to elucidate the chlorophyll-deficient mechanism of albino cultivar 'Huangjinya' and its offspring, color difference, photosynthetic pigments and the relevant genes’ expression of the tender shoots were comprehensively investigated in this study. Among the tested 16 offspring, 5 exhibited albino phenotype in spring and autumn, 3 showed albino phenotype in spring but normal green in autumn, while the rests were all normal green. The shoot of albino offspring had significantly higher lightness and/or yellowness than that of green ones, and possessed dramatically lower photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll precursor protochlorophyllide (Pchlide), as well as higher chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b but lower chlorophylls/carotenoids in comparison with green ones. Among the tested genes involved in chlorophyll and carotenoid metabolism pathways, expression of the magnesium protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester cyclase (CRD), 3,8-divinyl chlorophyllide 8-vinyl reductase (DVR), 5-aminolevulinate dehydratase 1 (HEMB1), 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate synthase 1 (DXS1) and 4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-enyl diphosphate reductase (ISPH) was remarkably down-regulated in shoots of the albino offspring. Color difference indices of the offspring were significantly correlated with the levels of photosynthetic pigments and Pchlide, and low level of chlorophylls in shoot of albino offspring was mainly due to conversion obstacle from magnesium protoporphyrin Ⅸ (Mg-Proto IX) to Pchlide which might be attributed to down-regulatory expression of CRD and DVR.
Lipidomics Analysis Reveals the Effect of Light Intensity on Lipid Metabolism and Leaf Color in Light-Sensitive Albino Tea Plant (Camellia Sinensis cv. Baijiguan)

Abstract:Abstract Background: Camellia sinensis cv. Baijiguan is a light-sensitive albino tea germplasm. Under light stress, the development of thylakoid membrane structure is not complete, leading to the white color of leaves. Previous studies have shown that the change of lipid can cause the change of thylakoid membrane structure. However, there is no study on the effect of lipid on the leaf color of light-sensitive albino tea germplasm. Thus, we hypothesized that the changes of lipid composition in Baijiguan could affect the leaf color. Results: In order to understand the mechanisms of its light sensitivity, Baijiguan and Rougui were grown under three different conditions: normal light, shading, shading followed by the resuming of light. The total lipids were isolated from the second leaf, 156 lipid species were identified and analyzed by lipidomics. We found that under normal light condition,the newly-developed leaves showed the yellow color with incomplete development of thylakoid membrane, the defense enzyme activity was maintained at a high level, accelerated degradation of chlorophyll. The ratio of MGDG to DGDG of Baijiguan was lower than that of Rougui which kept normal green leaf color. The shading treatment, reduced the content of MGDG and DGDG; meanwhile chlorophyll accumulated, and the thylakoid membrane formed, the leaves turned into green color. When shade-treated leaves were reexposed to light, the MGDG to DGDG ratio increased significantly, the lipid content decreased significantly, and the albinism emerged again. Conclusion: Our data demonstrated that the effect of light intensity on Baijiguan leaf color was realized by changing the lipid content and components in the leaves, and offered a new insight about the mechanisms of its leaf albinism.

Abstract:Light-sensitive albino tea plant grows yellow shoots under strong sunlight conditions. The yellow albino shoots contain high level of amino acids and medium level of polyphenols, which is beneficial for sensory quality of green tea. The effects of sunlight intensity on the transcriptions of genes involved in biosynthesis of chlorophylls and carotenoids, as well as the ultrastructure of chloroplasts, were investigated using a light-sensitive albino tea cultivar 'Huangjinya', and compared with a normal tea cultivar 'Fudingdabai'. The results showed that strong sunlight induced hypoplasia of chloroplasts by suppressing the development of grana stacking and thylakoids, and down-regulated the expression levels of the 1-deoxy-D-xylulose-5-phosphate synthase gene family, involved in biosynthesis of precursors of carotenoids and chlorophylls, as well as the magnesium chelatase subunit D gene, involved in biosynthesis of chlorophylls, leading to the reduction of chlorophylls. Strong sunlight up-regulated the expression of genes involved in carotenoid pathway, resulting in the accumulation of carotenoids, including violaxanthin and lutein. The shortage of chlorophylls and the accumulation of carotenoids were considered to cause the yellow color of the albino shoots of the light-sensitive albino tea cultivar 'Huangjinya'.

Abstract:Albino tea cultivars have high economic value because their young leaves contain enhanced free amino acids that improve the quality and properties of tea. Zhonghuang 1 (ZH1) and Zhonghuang 2 (ZH2) are two such cultivars widely planted in China; however, the environmental factors and molecular mechanisms regulating their yellow-leaf phenotype remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that both ZH1 and ZH2 are light- and temperature-sensitive. Under natural sunlight and low-temperature conditions, their young shoots were yellow with decreased chlorophyll and an abnormal chloroplast ultrastructure. Conversely, young shoots were green with increased chlorophyll and a normal chloroplast ultrastructure under shading and high-temperature conditions. RNA-seq analysis was performed for high light and low light conditions, and pairwise comparisons identified genes exhibiting different light responses between albino and green-leaf cultivars, including transcription factors, cytochrome P450 genes, and heat shock proteins. Weighted gene coexpression network analyses of RNA-seq data identified the modules related to chlorophyll differences between cultivars. Genes involved in chloroplast biogenesis and development, light signaling, and JA biosynthesis and signaling were typically downregulated in albino cultivars, accompanied by a decrease in JA-ILE content in ZH2 during the albino period. Furthermore, we identified the hub genes that may regulate the yellow-leaf phenotype of ZH1 and ZH2, including CsGDC1 , CsALB4 , CsGUN4 , and a TPR gene ( TEA010575.1 ), which were related to chloroplast biogenesis. This study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying leaf color formation in albino tea cultivars.

Abstract:Tea cultivars ‘Xiaoxueya’ and ‘White leaf No. 1’ have been bred from natural albino mutants of tea plants (Camellia sinensis) and have white tea shoots when the environmental temperature is below 20°–22°C in the early Spring. White tea shoots are used to produce high grades of unfermented tea in China because of their special leaf colour and flavour. The chemical compositions of their shoots were determined by high performance liquid chromatography and compared with ‘Zhenong-113’, a common tea cultivar used for green tea production. Eighteen amino acids and eight catechins were detected in the three cultivars examined, of which theanine was the most abundant amino acid, followed by arginine, glutamic acid, histidine, aspartic acid and threonine. The most abundant catechin was (–) epi-gallocatechin gallate (EGCg), followed by (–) epi-catechin gallate (ECg), and (–) epi-gallocatechin (EGC). Both albino cultivars had significantly higher total amino acid concentrations, but significantly lower concentrations of total catechins and caffeine than ‘Zhenong-113’. The relative compositions of amino acids and catechins differed between both albino mutants and ‘Zhenong-113’. Six out of the 18 amino acids occurred at higher levels in the mutants, four were at lower levels, six showed no difference, and the remaining two were not consistent. ECg and epi-catechin (EC) showed significantly lower levels, but EGC showed higher levels in the mutants, and no differences were observed for EGCg, (–) gallocatechin gallate (GCg) and (–) catechin gallate (Cg), while (–) gallocatechin (GC) and (–) catechin (C) were not consistent.
