Abstract:The cellular uptake and distribution of five types of well-characterized anatase and rutile TiO(2) nanoparticles (NPs) in A549 lung epithelial cells is reported. Static light scattering (SLS), in-vitro Raman microspectroscopy (μ-Raman) and transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) reveal an intimate correlation between the intrinsic physicochemical properties of the NPs, particle agglomeration, and cellular NP uptake. It is shown that μ-Raman facilitates chemical-, polymorph-, and size-specific discrimination of endosomal-particle cell uptake and the retention of particles in the vicinity of organelles, including the cell nucleus, which quantitatively correlates with TEM and SLS data. Depth-profiling μ-Raman coupled with hyperspectral data analysis confirms the location of the NPs in the cells and shows that the NPs induce modifications of the biological matrix. NP uptake is found to be kinetically activated and strongly dependent on the hard agglomeration size-not the primary particle size-which quantitatively agrees with the measured intracellular oxidative stress. Pro-inflammatory responses are also found to be sensitive to primary particle size.
Bodies in skilled performance: how dancers reflect through the living body

Abstract:Dancers and dance philosophers report on experiences of a certain form of sense making and bodily thinking through the dancing body. Yet, discussions on expertise and consciousness are often framed within canonical philosophical world-views that make it difficult to fully recognize, verbalize, and value the full variety of embodied and affective facets of subjectivity. Using qualitative interviews with five professional dancers and choreographers, I make an attempt to disclose the characteristics of what I consider to be a largely overseen state of consciousness: embodied reflection. Dancers are familiar with this attentive bodily presence, which constitutes their work mode and heightens their abilities as experts. Detailed descriptions of their daily work at the theatre help us grasp the qualities and understand the enigmas of the absorbed state of bodily thinking. Husserl's theories on reflection and Merleau-Ponty's work on motoricity support our understanding of the structures behind embodied reflection. I believe it is a common human resource, and that whether we are experts or not, we all have the ability to reflect non-conceptually through bodily and/or affective activity.

The Invisibility of Disability: Using Dance to Shake from Bioethics the Idea of 'Broken Bodies'

Abstract:Complex social and ethical problems are often most effectively solved by engaging them at the messy and uncomfortable intersections of disciplines and practices, a notion that grounds the InVisible Difference project, which seeks to extend thinking and alter practice around the making, status, ownership, and value of work by contemporary dance choreographers by examining choreographic work through the lenses of law, bioethics, dance scholarship, and the practice of dance by differently-abled dancers. This article offers a critical thesis on how bioethics has come to occupy a marginal and marginalizing role in questions about the differently-abled body. In doing so, it has rendered the disabled community largely invisible to and in bioethics. It then defends the claim that bioethics - as a social undertaking pursued collaboratively by individuals from different disciplines - must take much better notice of the body and the embodied individual if it is to better achieve its ends, which include constructing a moral and just society. Finally, this article considers how the arts, and specifically dance (and here dance by differently-abled dancers), provides us with rich evidence about the body and our ability to respond positively to normally 'othered' bodies. It concludes that greater attention to empirical evidence like that being generated in InVisible Difference will help to expand the reach and significance of bioethics, and thereby its relevance to (and consciousness of) important questions about the status of bodies and bodily differences, which must be considered as central to its ambitions.
Embodied collaborative writing in graduate dance education

Abstract:This paper explores how embodied writing can inform teaching, learning, and research presentation in graduate-level dance education in a kinesiology faculty. The focus is on a graduate dance course "The Dancing Body in Motion", which combines the anatomical analysis of the physical body, social theory, and lived dance experiences to promote more embodied and holistic teaching and learning. The authors, an instructor and a student of the course, share their experiences and reflections on the course through an embodied presentation of a dialogue that combines the instructor's lecture notes, the student's learning journal entries, and their reflections both separately and in conversation with each other. Their reflections offer insights into how the body and mind, material and social body, and practice and theory can all be brought together using embodied writing practices, such as a learning journal and performance ethnography, in a dance performance.

Abstract:This interpretive inquiry explores the construction of knowledge by dancers in the rehearsal process. Although seemingly primary to the act of choreography, the dancers' experiences of the choreographic process have not been explored fully. Though often neglected, the dancers' experience of rehearsal warrants further investigation for dance educators. Through the dancers' narratives, an account of the nature of knowing emerges from which an epistemology, or theory of knowledge, is theorized. Following a review of the relevant literature in dance education and epistemology, an interpretive methodology is used as a framework for collecting and interpreting the narrative accounts of ten university dancers with whom the researcher recently created a new piece of choreography. Four significant epistemological clusters are discussed, most notably knowing as interpersonal construction, knowing as re-membering the body, and the contextual situatedness of knowing from a particular body, place, and time. The study reveals important epistemological issues for further dance research agendas.

Abstract:Creative processes used to choreograph country dance are distinguishable from those utilized in other dance movement systems. Described here is my experience of a novel approach within somatic education – one reflecting on the nature of the creative process in country dance choreography. My primary aim was to trace a distinctive moment when feeling translates into a later communicable thought. In country dance choreography, this is known as the hook . Over the course of two months, I developed my own experiential somatic practice under the guidance of leading dance, science and somatics practitioner-researcher, Dr Glenna Batson. I engaged in this form of embodied practice in order to explore somatics as a method for conducting research as well as aiding in my own creative process as a country dance choreographer. Through the process of anarchiving, harvesting and tracing moments from my somatic experience, I found key correlations and contrasts between somatics and country dance.

Abstract:Eating disorders among adolescent girls are a public health concern. Adolescent girls that participate in aesthetic sport, such as dance, are of particular concern as they experience the highest rates of clinical eating disorders. The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of young girls in the world of competitive dance and examine how these experiences shape their relationship with the body; feminist poststructural discourse analysis was employed to critically explore this relationship. Interviews were conducted across Canada with twelve young girls in competitive dance (14–18 years of age) to better understand how the dominant discourses in the world of competitive dance constitute the beliefs, values and practices about body and body image. Environment, parents, coaches, and peers emerged as the largest influencers in shaping the young dancers’ relationship with their body. These influencers were found to generate and perpetuate body image discourses that reinforce the ideal dancer’s body and negative body image.

Abstract:The fetus is dependent upon the placenta for transport to it of all nutrients for energy and growth. The primary nutrients crossing the placenta are glucose, lactic acid, free amino acids, free fatty acids, and ketone bodies. Under normal circumstances, it appears that glucose is the primary energy source. In abnormal conditions there is the possibility that energy requirements may be met also by protein-amino acid oxidation and ketone body metabolism. The fetal brain may be quite adept in the use of ketone bodies. In all transport phenomena, the placenta intervenes by diverting nutrients into its own intermediary metabolism. For a more extensive consideration of these factors, several in-depth reviews are recommended. To better understand abnormalities of intrauterine growth, we need much more specific information about the mechanisms of placental transport and the intermediary metabolism of the placenta and fetus. When these are adequately in states of normal and abnormal intrauterine growth, we can then consider methods of metabolic intervention which will correct intrauterine growth failure and, hopefully, eliminate its hazards to the fetus and child.

Abstract:Dance is a multi-modal artistic engagement whose group-delivered protocols have resulted in positive impacts on elderly health (Roberts et al 2017; Liu, Shen, and Tsai, 2021). Since the 2022 special topic issue on dance and the elderly was published (Markula, Clark and Goodwin 2022), reports from arts-science research collaborations have shown numerous ways person- and community-centered arts-based approaches have extended health across quality-of-life domains among aging adults (Fancourt and Steptoe, 2019; Golden, et al., 2023). For dance, such improvements have been reported from training in many different dance styles – structured (modern dance), improvisational, culturally stylized and technologically-assisted. The research is promising, particularly as many barriers to dancing have been removed and ease of access has improved for diverse populations. Nonetheless, important research gaps remain, specifically in articulating the social benefits of dance and their impact on agency (Karczmarska 2023; Jensen, et al., 2024; Kontos and Grigorovich, 2018). As an aesthetic art form, dance participation couples brain-body health with a range of communicative abilities bearing on relationality and meaning (Warburton 2011). Data on psychosocial skills of attention, listening, cooperation, self-regulation and empathy are not commonly collected or reported in quantitative research. Valuing such nontangible factors is particularly relevant first in promoting independence and in decreasing the perceived and actual burden of aging on general health and wellbeing. Further, critical to research advancement is the need to distinguish and differentiate functional and neuroplastic outcomes comparing dance protocols with comparable dosages of repetitive fitness exercise (Rehfeld, et al., 2018; Müller, et al., 2017). Last, the impact of aesthetic factors on health remains understudied (Chappell et al, 2021; Fontanesi 2021). For this special research topic issue on dance and health in older adults, our interest focused around the interaction of qualitative and quantitative factors. Specifically, we solicited studies that address how dance participation could foster embodied agency, as well as induce positive neuroplastic changes in the brains of the elderly across different populations. Manuscripts submitted reflected a global scope of collaborative research between dance educators and neurological and behavioral scientists, including Brazil, Canada, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States). Included in this collection are original clinical research, case series, conceptual analysis, and perspectives papers, in which researchers critically analyze interrelated connections and interactions of physical psychological, aesthetic, cultural and social meanings of dance for older persons. Although the collection offers a small sampling of the scope of the topic of embodied agency through dance (9 articles, plus Editorial), they represent an evocative variety of mixed methodologies in both quantitative science and qualitative phenomenological, sociological and cultural research. The issue opens with a perspective by Sheets-Johnstone, dance philosopher, who emphasizes the need to explicate the neurological and kinesthetic coordination dynamics embodied within dance, dynamics which are critical to engendering health of the whole body.In a conceptual analysis of an Italian study on dance and Parkinson's disease, Houston extrapolates 'soft skills' – 'anoetic knowledge,' data which, when expressed through dance, preface a sensate, emotional and affective state of mind - one critical to self- and other-care, vulnerability, patience, and other indicators of meaningful social engagement.Other samples from the collection include original clinical research: a randomized controlled study on social determinants of health by Worthen-Chadhuri et al., reporting improvements in autonomy, competence and relatedness for persons with chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. In three studies, researchers designed digitally assisted technology in their dance/movement protocols: First, Delabary et al. reported sustained improvements from Brazilian dance for older adults living with Parkinson's disease, despite switching from on-site to online learning during the COVID 19 epidemic. Second, emplying a protocol or virtual ballet and wellness classes, Harrison et al. reported combined qualitative and quantitaqtive improvements in measures of social efficacy and gait and balance for a group of elderly women. Third, the use of group-delivery of visual assisted feedback of hand gestures by Hansen, et al. proved aesthetically 'irresistible,' in stimulating movement learning.The article by Barnstaple et al., speaks to the need for transdisciplinary researchers to rise to the challenge of capturing nuance in 'full bodied reporting.' Relationships between dance, health and aesthetic performance in a company of mature dancers: An exploratory study

Abstract:Dance with the older body is often viewed as a means to slow the physiological and cognitive decline associated with ageing or chronic health conditions. However, little research has investigated the aesthetic qualities and performance potential of mature dancers and how this might influence health outcomes. During a choreographic project bringing together a renowned contemporary dance company with one of mature dancers, a co-designed, mixed-methods approach was taken to explore the impact of a somatically informed approach to choreography on the dancers’ movement quality, efficiency and performance aesthetics. Quality-of-life measurements showed no significant differences between pre- and post-choreographic project, although high scores suggested good overall health amongst participants. Subjective changes in movement quality were observed alongside improvements in balance ability ascribed to the inward focus of the somatically informed creative process. Participants commented that they were able to achieve more, physically and aesthetically, than they had previously believed possible.

Abstract:<span>This qualitative research aimed at exploring personal dance experience and influence of dancing on the evolution of embodied self-awareness and well-being.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three participants (one female, two males), and the data were evaluated using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.Six themes were identified: (a) freedom of expression through dance, (b) perceptions of fun and partner dance vs. dancing alone, (c) flow in dance, (d) sensations and sexuality in dance, (e) music and rhythm in dance, and (f) impact of dance on life and the self. Participants reported that dance led to higher embodied self-awareness and creative self-expression and was deemed to improve health and well-being.Our findings help increase the utility of dance as a well-being approach, stress coping intervention and countermeasure to depression and loneliness. They make aware of the use of dance as a creative tool in inducing positive transformations on individual and societal levels.</span>

Abstract:As robotic systems are moved out of factory work cells into human-facing environments questions of choreography become central to their design, placement, and application. With a human viewer or counterpart present, a system will automatically be interpreted within context, style of movement, and form factor by human beings as animate elements of their environment. The interpretation by this human counterpart is critical to the success of the system’s integration: “knobs” on the system need to make sense to a human counterpart; an artificial agent should have a way of notifying a human counterpart of a change in system state, possibly through motion profiles; and the motion of a human counterpart may have important contextual clues for task completion. Thus, professional choreographers, dance practitioners, and movement analysts are critical to research in robotics. They have design methods for movement that align with human audience perception; they can help identify simplified features of movement that will effectively accomplish human-robot interaction goals; and they have detailed knowledge of the capacity of human movement. This article provides approaches employed by one research lab, specific impacts on technical and artistic projects within, and principles that may guide future such work. The background section reports on choreography, somatic perspectives, improvisation, the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System, and robotics. From this context methods including embodied exercises, writing prompts, and community building activities have been developed to facilitate interdisciplinary research. The results of this work are presented as an overview of a smattering of projects in areas like high-level motion planning, software development for rapid prototyping of movement, artistic output, and user studies that help understand how people interpret movement. Finally, guiding principles for other groups to adopt are posited.
The Experience of Dancing Among Individuals with Cerebral Palsy at an Inclusive Dance Group: A Qualitative Study

Abstract:Background: Art practices such as dance have the potential to support people with disabilities. It is possible that through dancing, bodies that may be regarded as "deficient" can be strengthened while enhancing their personal and cultural identities. It is also possible that inclusive group dance classes can enable the integration of people with disabilities in their social context. However, there is limited research on how these potential benefits are experienced by participants. Aim: The purpose of this research is to describe the experience of people with cerebral palsy participating in regular dance classes. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants with cerebral palsy who participated in an inclusive dance group that was informed by the creative approach of Laban. The interviews were transcribed, coded, and analyzed according to the thematic analysis of Braun and Clarke. The qualitative analysis software program ATLAS.TI version 8 was used for organizing and data analysis. Findings: The six interviews were analyzed and codified in four main categories: (1) the experience of cerebral palsy (the body does not help); (2) dance as a form of relationship with myself and the other; (3) the value of dancing and; (4) the dancer. These categories led to the creation of two subthemes: (a) the "unlocking" concerning the therapeutic effect of dance and (b) the "acquisition of a dancer's identity" by engaging with dance as an artform. An overall theme also emerged, "the passage from darkness to light." Conclusions: Individuals with cerebral palsy, while taking the risk of being physically "exposed" in dance classes and dance group performances, managed to unlock their bodies, develop connections with others, acquire the identity of a dancer, and move from "darkness" to "light."
Moving Beyond Routines in Teaching and Learning: Releasing the Educative Potential of Published Eating Disorder Memoirs

Abstract:Learning from the lived experience of disordered eating is vital for contemporary mental health practitioners. While mental health practitioners need to understand the psycho-biological issues that impact the person and family with an eating disorder, there is much about this complex condition that eludes and escapes a bio-medical perspective. Use of an aesthetic lens on the issue can illuminate various challenges, tensions and insights that people with disordered eating experience along the journey of their ill-health and on to their recovery, but which often remain unstated in the clinical context. Scholars within the creative arts discipline are experts in making judgements about the quality of artworks they encounter and have highly developed aesthetic knowing. Yet, the central skills and knowledges embodied in creative arts activity are not widely utilized outside that sphere. This article reports on how aesthetics can be applied to sensitize mental health practitioners to appreciate the lived experience of a mental health challenge such as an eating disorder. Such mental health practitioners play an important role in the health service, yet the widespread diffusion of the bio-medical model into mental health, once characterized for its equal emphasis on the psycho-social-cultural, has led to criticisms of an over-focus on illness identification, at the expense of accommodating the meanings of subjective and unique experiences of mental health, struggle and recovery. Using Kate Grenville's typology of the elements of effective creative writing, we show how these elements contribute to the aesthetic power and impact of particular eating disorder memoirs.
Breaking Free: One Adolescent Woman’s Recovery from Dating Violence Through Creative Dance

Abstract:Abstract Dating violence against adolescent women can devastate their health and long-term quality of life. While high school programs have been developed to address this worldwide epidemic, somatic antidotes are still not widely utilized despite evidence from the psychophysiology of relational violence trauma that there is an inextricable link between the body and mind and effective recovery requires a holistic approach. Creative dance, derived from dance education, can support female adolescent trauma victims of dating violence to reconnect with physical, mental, and emotional experiences that were severed during traumatic exposure. This qualitative arts-based case study narratively explores one adolescent woman’s experience of creative dance as an intervention for survivors of dating violent relationships. Conceptually, I draw from dance education, Authentic Movement, and Amber Gray’s Restorative Movement Psychotherapy. A feminist lens is utilized in an attempt to address calls to action from previous DMT researchers to tackle oppressive structural forces and increase activism in dance/movement therapy. Findings show that inner-directed dance can therapeutically facilitate restoration after trauma by recovering the social engagement system and decision-making capacity, reducing social isolation, and increasing bodily self-awareness, and self-esteem.
Creative Intercorporeality in Collaborative Work of Choreographers with and without Disabilities: A Grounded Theory Approach

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to present an academic discourse on a theoretical framework and acceptance process of 'creative intercorporeality' in the collaborative work of choreographers with and without disabilities. To this end, a grounded theory approach using a qualitative research method was employed to dancers who have participated in collaborative choreography. This study employed the perspective of social cognitive theory about the process in which dancers with and without disabilities form emotional empathy and trust relationships through continuous interactions for creative work. Physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral empathy and interactions in the collaborative work of choreographers with and without disabilities were discussed as a process of forming 'creative intercorporeality' that is defined as creative attitude and perspective consisting of harmony, concurrency, consistency, and balance.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION A sound knowledge of the normal and variant liver anatomy is a prerequisite to having a favourable surgical outcome. Knowledge of the commonly-occurring variations assumes even more significance in the era of diagnostic imaging and minimally-invasive surgical approaches. Although the segmental anatomy of the liver has been extensively researched, very few studies have dealt with the surface variations of the liver. METHODS 90 formalin-fixed livers were utilised for the study. Variations regarding the shapes of the caudate and the quadrate lobes as well as the normal fissures were observed. The presence of the accessory fissures and any other variations on the surface of the livers were noted. RESULTS Varied shapes of the caudate and the quadrate lobes were encountered. Notching along the inferior border of the caudate lobe was seen in 18 percent of livers, a vertical fissure was observed in 30 percent, and prominent papillary process was seen in 32 percent. Accessory fissures and grooves were more common in the right lobe. Multiple prominent vertical grooves were observed on the anterosuperior surface of the liver in six percent of livers. Quadrate lobe was absent in four percent, and in two cases, it was found to be deeply buried. Presence of a pons hepatis, bridging the left and the quadrate lobes, was observed in 30 percent of the livers examined. CONCLUSION Our study is expected to serve as a guide for proper interpretations of liver images using various imaging modalities. It will also be useful to the operating surgeons to be aware of the frequently-occurring morphological variations on the liver surface.

Abstract:In this issue of Public Health Nutrition, Uusitalo et al. address the issue of how dietary Westernisation might be conceptualised in research. This is a novel question because we mostly believe that we already know what dietary Westernisation is. Many of us eat a Western-type meal every day, or we are surrounded by others who consume Western-type diets, or we experience Western diets vicariously through advertising industry images. In their study to conceptualise and measure dietary Westernisation, Uusitalo et al. make some interesting observations: that a relatively small number of indicator foods can be used to describe it in Mauritius, and that other dietary patterns may actually represent transitions towards Western patterns or away from traditional ones. Their most interesting observation, however, regards the dynamic nature of dietary patterns. Their traditional pattern, for example, was correlated with intake of Indian breads, sauces and tea, but also with regular soft drinks and sugar added to tea. They suggest, in fact, that ‘a pure indigenous dietary pattern with no Western foods in the diet may already be extinct in Mauritius’. Historical examination shows that Western dietary patterns are not static either. The stereotypical US meal of red meat and potatoes is grounded in the British heritage that lies at the foundation of US culture. But in the early part of the 20th century, with the rise of nutrition as a science, the growth of the food and advertising industries, and government-sponsored food conservation programs during World War I, a new dietary pattern emerged – one based on the concept that one should eat fruits and vegetables as a way to be healthy. Both the meat-and-potatoes and fruits-and-vegetables patterns can fairly be labelled as ‘Western’. In fact, these are the two dominant patterns that we see in factor analytical studies in US populations. Aspects of both are seen in the Western dietary pattern in Mauritius as well. As Uusitalo et al. suggest, we need more detailed examinations of dietary transition and dietary Westernisation as separate entities. Their study raises questions to be addressed in future work: How should we measure traditional or Western patterns – empirically, using a statistical method such as principal components analysis, or using an index based on qualitative understanding of a prototypical diet? How do we recognise the emergence of new, real patterns in dietary data? And how well can crosssectional observations be extrapolated to the longitudinal process of dietary Westernisation? In describing the phenomenon of dietary Westernisation, migrant studies provide another valuable perspective. Also in this issue of Public Health Nutrition is a paper by Heald et al., which shows marked differences in both dietary intake and the insulin-like growth (IGF) factor system between Gujarati Indians in India and those who migrated to the UK. Their findings provide compelling evidence, in the tradition of migrant studies, that environmental factors – possibly dietary – play a major role in influencing the IGF system and hence in affecting chronic disease risk. The special issue of Public Health Nutrition that accompanies this issue presents a new view of nutrition as a science – one that goes beyond biology and incorporates fields as disparate as economics and the social, political and environmental sciences. Certainly, social, economic and cultural changes lie at the heart of the process of dietary Westernisation. However, not atypically for our journal, the papers contained within the present regular issue also represent a sampling of topics falling at different corners of the new nutrition science – a review of isotope dilution techniques to assess vitamin A status, the association of geographic area deprivation with childhood obesity and the contribution of drought in southern Africa to childhood malnutrition. We look forward to discussions and to the development of a new conceptual framework to organise the scope of work falling within nutritional science, and to take our discipline to new directions. Abstract:The embodied creative practice of dance facilitates a particular kind of awareness or attunement which can inform both the therapeutic and the intellectual work of the Health Humanities. This paper therefore considers dance as a way of 'doing' Health Humanities in two interlinked ways: dance as a way of healing and dance as a way of knowing. In bringing together carnal and the creative dimensions of human experience, dance offers us a way of making sense of our place in the world that provides us both with much needed existential security (tethering) and much needed epistemological freedom (untethering).

Abstract:This review articulates current understanding of the aesthetic, artistic and creative contributions that Dance makes to Health and Wellbeing across the lifecourse within publications 2000–2019, an under-researched area.Review Questions: What are the aesthetic, artistic and creative contributions that Dance makes to Health and Wellbeing across the lifecourse? And what methodologies are appropriate for investigating these contributions? A database keyword search identified 769 articles and 91 evaluations. 109 documents were identified for further in-depth analysis and rating, resulting in 24 papers (11 articles, 3 PhD studies, 10 evaluation reports), which were thematically analysed.Findings offer seven interrelated contributions that Dance makes to Health and Wellbeing: embodiment, identity, belonging, self-worth, aesthetics, affective responses and creativity. There was less insight regarding different methodologies, and discussions focused on quantitative data's limitations. There were insights into inclusion of embodied voices, subjective accounts, and lived experiences.Whilst acknowledging challenges, this paper illuminates the key contributions of dance to arts and health. It provides a future conceptual research agenda (prioritizing identity and creativity) and associated methodological developments. It recommends expanding geographical/lifecourse research, better defining terms, fuller epistemological critiques to open space for new methodologies, and continued attendance to appropriate rigour criteria.
