Abstract:To efficiently process complex visual scenes, the visual system often summarizes statistical information across individual items and represents them as an ensemble. However, due to the lack of techniques to disentangle the representation of the ensemble from that of the individual items constituting the ensemble, whether there exists a specialized neural mechanism for ensemble processing and how ensemble perception is computed in the brain remain unknown. To address these issues, we used a frequency-tagging EEG approach to track brain responses to periodically updated ensemble sizes. Neural responses tracking the ensemble size were detected in parietooccipital electrodes, revealing a global and specialized neural mechanism of ensemble size perception. We then used the temporal response function to isolate neural responses to the individual sizes and their interactions. Notably, while the individual sizes and their local and global interactions were encoded in the EEG signals, only the global interaction contributed directly to the ensemble size perception. Finally, distributed attention to the global stimulus pattern enhanced the neural signature of the ensemble size, mainly by modulating the neural representation of the global interaction between all individual sizes. These findings advocate a specialized, global neural mechanism of ensemble size perception and suggest that global interaction between individual items contributes to ensemble perception.

Abstract:In "The Organization of Behavior" (Hebb, 1949), Hebb suggested that the propagation of activity between transiently grouped neurons plays an important role in behavior. Since then, multiple studies have provided evidence supporting Hebb's claim; however, most findings have been found locally in confined brain regions during unimodal tasks. Here we report on brain-wide behavioral-specific sequences in humans performing a multimodal task. To investigate the structure of these sequences, we used MEG to record brain activity in multiple brain regions simultaneously in participants performing a sensory-motor synchronization task. We detected local transient events corresponding to synchronously activating populations of pyramidal neurons and searched for their global organization as spatio-temporal patterns of activation sequences between distant neural populations. We focused our analysis on two types of spatio-temporal patterns: the most frequently repeating patterns and the most discriminative patterns, to concentrate on patterns with high relevancy to behavior. The findings revealed that global temporally precise sequences can be found and that these sequences have partially stereotypical characteristics, both temporally and spatially, with consistent properties across subjects. By implementing a simplistic single-trial decoding approach, we found that brain-wide sequences have a temporal precision of 17-31 milliseconds, which resembles the temporal precision found locally in neural assemblies.

Abstract:Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) allows the study of functional brain connectivity based on spatially structured variations in neuronal activity. Proper evaluation of connectivity requires removal of non-neural contributions to the fMRI signal, in particular hemodynamic changes associated with autonomic variability. Regression analysis based on autonomic indicator signals has been used for this purpose, but may be inadequate if neuronal and autonomic activities covary. To investigate this potential co-variation, we performed rsfMRI experiments while concurrently acquiring electroencephalography (EEG) and autonomic indicator signals, including heart rate, respiratory depth, and peripheral vascular tone. We identified a recurrent and systematic spatiotemporal pattern of fMRI (named as fMRI cascade), which features brief signal reductions in salience and default-mode networks and the thalamus, followed by a biphasic global change with a sensory-motor dominance. This fMRI cascade, which was mostly observed during eyes-closed condition, was accompanied by large EEG and autonomic changes indicative of arousal modulations. Importantly, the removal of the fMRI cascade dynamics from rsfMRI diminished its correlations with various signals. These results suggest that the rsfMRI correlations with various physiological and neural signals are not independent but arise, at least partly, from the fMRI cascades and associated neural and physiological changes at arousal modulations.
Completeness out of Incompleteness: Inferences from Regularities in Imperfect Information Ensembles.

Abstract:Handling imperfect information problems is fundamental to perception, learning, and decision-making. Ensemble perception may partially overcome imperfect information by providing global clues. However, if not all cluster elements are readily accessible, the observations required for computing statistics are incomplete. In this case, these elements' internal correlations (i.e., regularity) could serve as clues to elucidate the missing pieces. We thus investigated spatial regularity's role in ensemble perception under imperfect information situations created using partially occluded stimuli. In two experiments, we manipulated circle size (Experiment 1) and line orientation (Experiment 2) to linearly vary with its location; spatial regularity thus supplied clues for inferring information of the invisible parts. Participants estimated the mean of the targeted feature of the entire cluster, including visible and invisible parts. We observed robust biases toward the overall cluster in the estimations, implying the invisible parts were considered during ensemble perception. We proposed this effect could be understood as assessing evidence from visible parts to construct the missing parts. Experiment 3 employed a periodicity regularity to deter participants from using specific strategies, and consistent results were found. We then developed a generative model, the Regularity-Based Model, to simulate the inference process, which better captured the pattern of human outcomes than the comparative model. These findings indicate the visual system could use high-level structural information to infer scenes with incomplete information, thus producing more accurate ensemble representations. Unraveling the Neural Network: Identifying Temporal Labeling of Visual Events through EEG-Based Functional Connectivity Analysis of Brain Regions

Abstract:Understanding the complex interplay between the brain and a dynamic environment necessitates the continuous generation and updating of expectations for forthcoming events and their corresponding sensory and motor responses. This study investigates the interconnectivity patterns associated with time perception in predictable and unpredictable conditions. EEG signals were obtained from an existing database, encompassing an experiment conducted on healthy participants subjected to two conditions: predictable and unpredictable, across various time delays. Functional connectivity between brain regions was estimated using the phase lag index method, allowing for the identification of differences in time perception between conditions. Comparative analysis revealed significant variations, particularly in the gamma, beta, and theta frequency bands, with more pronounced differences observed in the predictable condition. Subsequent exploration of the dissimilarities within each delay demonstrated significant differences across all delays. Notably, the unpredictable condition exhibited increased connectivity within the alpha band during the 400-ms delay, specifically between occipital and temporal regions, with higher mean connectivity compared to the predictable condition. In the delta band, distinct connectivity patterns emerged, involving connections between central and frontal regions across different delays. Notably, heightened connectivity between central and prefrontal regions was observed during the 83-ms delay. The right hemisphere of the prefrontal cortex played a pivotal role in time perception. Furthermore, a decline in connectivity across the delta, theta, and beta bands was observed during the longest delay (800 ms) in both conditions, relative to other delays.

The Neural Basis of Event Segmentation: Stable Features in the Environment are Reflected by Neural States

Abstract:Our senses receive a continuous stream of complex information. Parsing this information into meaningful events allows us to extract relevant information, remember it, and act upon it. Previous research has related these events to so-called neural states: temporally and regionally specific stable patterns of brain activity, which tend to coincide with events in the stimulus. Neural states show a temporal cortical hierarchy: short states are present in early sensory areas, while longer states can be found in higher-level areas. Here we investigated what these neural states represent. We hypothesized that states at different levels of the cortical hierarchy are shaped by aspects of the stimulus to which these brain areas are responsive. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed fMRI data of participants watching a movie, using a data-driven method to identify the neural states. We found support for the aforementioned hypothesis: specifically the parahippocampal place area and retrosplenial cortex, known to be sensitive to places, showed an alignment between neural state boundaries and moments in the movie with a change in location, independent of changes in visual features and other covariates. These findings suggest that neural states reflect stable features in the (internal model of) the external environment, and that the cortical temporal hierarchy partly reflects the temporal scales at which representations of the environment evolve.

Signatures of hierarchical temporal processing in the mouse visual system

Abstract:A core challenge for the brain is to process information across various timescales. This could be achieved by a hierarchical organization of temporal processing through intrinsic mechanisms (e.g., recurrent coupling or adaptation), but recent evidence from spike recordings of the rodent visual system seems to conflict with this hypothesis. Here, we used an optimized information-theoretic and classical autocorrelation analysis to show that information- and intrinsic timescales of spiking activity increase along the anatomical hierarchy of the mouse visual system, while information-theoretic predictability decreases. Moreover, the timescale hierarchy was invariant to the stimulus condition, whereas the decrease in predictability was strongest under natural movie stimulation. We could reproduce this effect in a basic recurrent network model with correlated sensory input. Our findings suggest that the rodent visual system indeed employs intrinsic mechanisms to achieve longer integration for higher cortical areas, while simultaneously reducing predictability for an efficient neural code.

Abstract:Human listeners possess an innate capacity to discern patterns within rapidly unfolding sensory input. Core questions, guiding ongoing research, focus on the mechanisms through which these representations are acquired and whether the brain prioritizes or suppresses predictable sensory signals. Previous work, using fast auditory sequences (tone-pips presented at a rate of 20Hz), revealed sustained response effects that appear to track the dynamic predictability of the sequence. Here we extend the investigation to slower sequences (4Hz), permitting the isolation of responses to individual tones. Stimuli were 50ms tone-pips, ordered into random (RND) and regular (REG; a repeating pattern of 10 frequencies) sequences; Two timing profiles were created: in ‘fast’ sequences tone-pips were presented in direct succession (20 Hz); in ‘slow’ sequences tone-pips were separated by a 200ms silent gap (4 Hz). Naive participants (N=22; both sexes) passively listened to these sequences, while brain responses were recorded using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Results unveiled a heightened magnitude of sustained brain responses in REG when compared to RND patterns. This manifested from three tones after the onset of the pattern repetition, even in the context of slower sequences characterized by extended pattern durations (2500ms). This observation underscores the remarkable implicit sensitivity of the auditory brain to acoustic regularities. Importantly, brain responses evoked by single tones exhibited the opposite pattern - stronger responses to tones in RND compared to REG sequences. The demonstration of simultaneous but opposing sustained and evoked response effects reveals concurrent processes that shape the representation of unfolding auditory patterns. Significance Statement Humans excel at detecting predictable patterns within sound sequences, a process crucial for listening, language processing, and music appreciation. However, questions persist about the underlying neural mechanisms and the specific information monitored by the brain. Our study addresses these questions by analysing magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals from participants exposed to predictable and unpredictable tone-pip patterns. We found that the MEG signal simultaneously captures two crucial aspects of predictability tracking. Firstly, sustained MEG activity, tracking the sequence's evolution, dynamically assesses pattern predictability, shedding light on how the brain evaluates reliability. Secondly, phasic MEG activity, reflecting responses to individual events, shows reduced activity to predictable tones, aligning with the idea that the brain anticipates and efficiently encodes upcoming events in predictable contexts.

Abstract:Speech understanding, watching a movie, listening to music etc., requires perception of the temporal order of at least two incoming events. A history of performing these tasks may be reflected in spontaneous brain activity. Here, we examined the relationship between the complexity (temporal dynamics) of resting‑state EEG (rsEEG) signal, assessed using the multivariate MultiScale Entropy (mMSE) algorithm, and the perception of event ordering, indexed by a visual temporal order threshold (TOT), i.e., the minimum duration necessary to correctly identify the before‑after relation between two stimuli. Healthy adolescents and young adults performed a psychophysical task measuring the TOT and underwent an eyes‑closed rsEEG study. The features of mMSE vectors, namely the area under curve (AUC) that represents total signal complexity, as well as the MaxSlope and the AvgEnt, corresponding to the entropy at fine‑ and coarse‑grained timescales, respectively, were obtained for the central (midline), anterior, middle and posterior channel sets. The greater the AUC and AvgEnt values in the central, left and right posterior areas, and the higher AUC in the right middle region, the higher the TOT. The most significant relationships were found for the midline electrodes (Fz, Cz, Pz, Oz). There were no significant correlations between the MaxSlope values and the TOT. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating that spontaneous EEG signal complexity is associated with the temporal order perception of two stimuli presented in rapid succession. Our findings may indicate that low total and coarse entropy levels of rsEEG signal are beneficial for visual temporal order judgments.
Neural signatures of voluntary action with long-range intentions

Abstract:Abstract Long-range intentions are a vital feature of real-world voluntary action, but have not been extensively studied in relation to their neural correlates. The current study adopted a procedure instead that previous highly repeatable and single decision point paradigms, in which voluntary action (generated by a random ratio (RR), yoked random interval (RI) reinforcement schedule) could be compared with a yoked condition in which participants responded to an external cue. Participants were required to reach the highest reward rates they could in the RI schedule, which offered an indicator of the extent to which long-range intentions have been formed. A classical RP amplitude occurred preceding participants’ keypress action in the current study. EEG amplitudes and EEG variability decreased significantly prior to voluntary action, compared to externally triggered action. These results extend previous findings regarding voluntary action arising from a particular set of long-range intention-based processes, rather than the outcome of stochastic neural fluctuations. Notably, EEG amplitudes decreased significantly differently prior to higher RI-reward rates (i.e., higher plane of long-range intentions formed). The novel experimental paradigm suggests a possible contribution of long-range intentions on the neural activities stage prior to voluntary action.
Parallel mechanisms signal a hierarchy of sequence structure violations in the auditory cortex

Abstract:The brain predicts regularities in sensory inputs at multiple complexity levels, with neuronal mechanisms that remain elusive. Here, we monitored auditory cortex activity during the local-global paradigm, a protocol nesting different regularity levels in sound sequences. We observed that mice encode local predictions based on stimulus occurrence and stimulus transition probabilities, because auditory responses are boosted upon prediction violation. This boosting was due to both short-term adaptation and an adaptation-independent surprise mechanism resisting anesthesia. In parallel, and only in wakefulness, VIP interneurons responded to the omission of the locally expected sound repeat at sequence ending, thus providing a chunking signal potentially useful for establishing global sequence structure. When this global structure was violated, by either shortening the sequence or ending it with a locally expected but globally unexpected sound transition, activity slightly increased in VIP and PV neurons respectively. Hence, distinct cellular mechanisms predict different regularity levels in sound sequences.

Aperiodic EEG predicts variability of visual temporal processing

Abstract:The human brain exhibits both oscillatory and aperiodic, or 1/f, activity. Although a large body of research has focused on the relationship between brain rhythms and sensory processes, aperiodic activity has often been overlooked as functionally irrelevant. Prompted by recent findings linking aperiodic activity to the balance between neural excitation and inhibition, we investigated its effects on the temporal resolution of perception. We recorded EEG from participants (both sexes) during resting state and a task in which they detected the presence of two flashes separated by variable inter-stimulus intervals. Two-flash discrimination accuracy typically follows a sigmoid function whose steepness reflects perceptual variability or inconsistent integration/segregation of the stimuli. We found that individual differences in the steepness of the psychometric function correlated with EEG aperiodic exponents over posterior scalp sites. In other words, participants with flatter EEG spectra (i.e., greater neural excitation) exhibited increased sensory noise, resulting in shallower psychometric curves. Our finding suggest that aperiodic EEG is linked to sensory integration processes usually attributed to the rhythmic inhibition of neural oscillations. Overall, this correspondence between aperiodic neural excitation and behavioral measures of sensory noise provides a more comprehensive explanation of the relationship between brain activity and sensory integration and represents an important extension to theories of how the brain samples sensory input over time.Significance statement Neural oscillations are fundamental for temporal organization and communication of information in the brain, while irregular activity has been suggested to disrupt these processes.We investigated the impact of aperiodic electrophysiological activity on a visual integration task known to depend on rhythmic brain organization. Crucially, Individuals exhibiting higher 1/f electrophysiological noise showed increased uncertainty or perceptual noise in temporal perception, highlighting how irregular neural activity affects tasks relying on periodic neural organization. These findings significantly advance our understanding of aperiodic EEG and its implications for perception, shedding light on its intricate interplay with various neural processes.
Contingent magnetic variation and beta-band oscillations in sensorimotor temporal decision-making

Abstract:The ability to accurately encode the temporal information of sensory events and hence to make prompt action is fundamental to humans' prompt behavioral decision-making. Here we examined the ability of ensemble coding (averaging multiple inter-intervals in a sound sequence) and subsequent immediate reproduction of target duration at half, equal, or double that of the perceived mean interval in a sensorimotor loop. With magnetoencephalography (MEG), we found that the contingent magnetic variation (CMV) in the central scalp varied as a function of the averaging tasks, with a faster rate for buildup amplitudes and shorter peak latencies in the "half" condition as compared to the "double" condition. ERD (event-related desynchronization) -to-ERS (event-related synchronization) latency was shorter in the "half" condition. A robust beta band (15-23 Hz) power suppression and recovery between the final tone and the action of key pressing was found for time reproduction. The beta modulation depth (i.e., the ERD-to-ERS power difference) was larger in motor areas than in primary auditory areas. Moreover, results of phase slope index (PSI) indicated that beta oscillations in the left supplementary motor area (SMA) led those in the right superior temporal gyrus (STG), showing SMA to STG directionality for the processing of sequential (temporal) auditory interval information. Our findings provide the first evidence to show that CMV and beta oscillations predict the coupling between perception and action in time averaging.
Cortical entrainment to hierarchical contextual rhythms recomposes dynamic attending in visual perception

Abstract:Temporal regularity is ubiquitous and essential to guiding attention and coordinating behavior within a dynamic environment. Previous researchers have modeled attention as an internal rhythm that may entrain to first-order regularity from rhythmic events to prioritize information selection at specific time points. Using the attentional blink paradigm, here we show that higher-order regularity based on rhythmic organization of contextual features (pitch, color, or motion) may serve as a temporal frame to recompose the dynamic profile of visual temporal attention. Critically, such attentional reframing effect is well predicted by cortical entrainment to the higher-order contextual structure at the delta band as well as its coupling with the stimulus-driven alpha power. These results suggest that the human brain involuntarily exploits multiscale regularities in rhythmic contexts to recompose dynamic attending in visual perception, and highlight neural entrainment as a central mechanism for optimizing our conscious experience of the world in the time dimension.

Encoding of task regularities links grid-like signals to human timing behavior

Abstract:Grid cells have been proposed to encode task regularities that allow predicting future states. Entorhinal grid-like signals might therefore mirror behavioral biases associated with relying on task regularities, like regression-to-the-mean biases in time estimation. Here, we tested this proposal using functional magnetic resonance imaging and a rapid timing task in humans. Indeed, trial-wise entorhinal activity reflected task accuracy and the degree to which interval estimates regressed towards the mean of all tested intervals. Grid-like signals were observed exclusively for the interval closest to the mean, which was explained by differences in temporal stability across intervals. Finally, both behavioral and entorhinal results were explained by a Bayesian observer model that assumes the integration of current-trial sensory evidence with prior expectations. Together, we find that entorhinal activity and grid-like signals reflect behavioral performance in a timing task, supporting the proposed role of grid cells in encoding task structure for predictive coordination of behavior.

Detection of Threshold-Level Stimuli Modulated by Temporal Predictions of the Cerebellum

Abstract:The cerebellum has the reputation of being a primitive part of the brain that mostly is involved in motor coordination and motor control. Older lesion studies and more recent electrophysiological studies have, however, indicated that it is involved in temporal perception and temporal expectation building. An outstanding question is whether this temporal expectation building cerebellar activity has functional relevance. In this study, we collected magnetoencephalographic data from 30 healthy participants performing a detection task on at-threshold stimulation that was presented at the end of a sequence of temporally regular or irregular above-threshold stimulation. We found that behavioral detection rates depended on the degree of irregularity in the sequence preceding it. We also found cerebellar responses evoked by above-threshold and at-threshold stimulation. The evoked responses to at-threshold stimulation differed significantly, depending on whether it was preceded by a regular or an irregular sequence. Finally, we found that detection performance across participants correlated significantly with the differences in cerebellar evoked responses to the at-threshold stimulation, demonstrating the functional relevance of cerebellar activity in sensory expectation building. We furthermore found evidence of thalamic involvement, as indicated by responses in the beta band (14–30 Hz) and by significant modulations of cerebello-thalamic connectivity by the regularity of the sequence and the kind of stimulation terminating the sequence. These results provide evidence that the temporal expectation building mechanism of the cerebellum, what we and others have called an internal clock, shows functional relevance by regulating behavior and performance in sensory action that requires acting and integrating evidence over precise timescales.

Abstract:Our findings contribute to the debate concerning how statistical regularities affect attention control, here pointing to substantial differences compared to salience processing: while salience was associated primarily with local effects within the occipital cortex, statistical regularities engaged a combination of local occipital processing and occipito‐parietal interactions. Attention selects behaviorally relevant inputs for in‐depth processing. Beside the role of traditional signals related to goal‐directed and stimulus‐driven control, a debate exists regarding the mechanisms governing the effect of statistical regularities on attentional selection, and how these are integrated with other control signals. Using a visuo‐spatial search task under fMRI, we tested the joint effects of statistical regularities and stimulus‐driven salience. We found that both types of signals modulated occipital activity in a spatially specific manner. Salience acted primarily by reducing the attention bias towards the target location when associated with irrelevant distractors, while statistical regularities reduced this attention bias when the target was presented at a low probability location, particularly at the lower levels of the visual hierarchy. In addition, we found that both statistical regularities and salience activated the dorsal frontoparietal network. Additional exploratory analyses of functional connectivity revealed that only statistical regularities modulated the inter‐regional coupling between the posterior parietal cortex and the occipital cortex. These results show that statistical regularities and salience signals are both spatially represented at the occipital level, but that their integration into attentional processing priorities relies on dissociable brain mechanisms.

Abstract:Characterizing the brain's dynamic pattern of response to an input in electroencephalography (EEG) is not a trivial task due to the entanglement of the complex spontaneous brain activity. In this context, the brain's response can be defined as (1) the additional neural activity components generated after the input or (2) the changes in the ongoing spontaneous activities induced by the input. Moreover, the response can be manifested in multiple features. Three commonly studied examples of features are (1) transient temporal waveform, (2) time-frequency representation, and (3) phase dynamics. The most extensively used method of average event-related potentials (ERPs) captures the first one, while the latter two and other more complex features are attracting increasing attention. However, there has not been much work providing a systematic illustration and guidance for how to effectively exploit multifaceted features in neural cognitive research. Based on a visual oddball ERPs dataset with 200 participants, this work demonstrates how the information from the above-mentioned features are complementary to each other and how they can be integrated based on stereotypical neural-network-based machine learning approaches to better exploit neural dynamic information in basic and applied cognitive research.
Dynamic emergence of relational structure network in human brains

Abstract:Reasoning the hidden relational structure from sequences of events is a crucial ability humans possess, which helps them to predict the future and make inferences. Besides simple statistical properties, humans also excel in learning more complex relational networks. Several brain regions are engaged in the process, yet the time-resolved neural implementation of relational structure learning and its contribution to behavior remains unknown. Here human subjects performed a probabilistic sequential prediction task on image sequences generated from a transition graph-like network, with their brain activities recorded using electroencephalography (EEG). We demonstrate the emergence of two key aspects of relational knowledge – lower-order transition probability and higher-order community structure, which arise around 540~930 msec after image onset and well predict behavioral performance. Furthermore, computational modeling suggests that the formed higher-order community structure, i.e., compressed clusters in the network, could be well characterized by a successor representation operation. Overall, human brains are computing the temporal statistical relationship among discrete inputs, based on which new abstract graph-like knowledge could be constructed.
