RLS has been reported to occur more frequently in migraine patients, but a clear pathogenetic link seems still under debate. Abstract:Background:: Cadmium (Cd2+) is considered to be one of the most important hazardous heavy metals due to its toxicity for living organisms at low concentration levels. Therefore, the estimation of trace Cd2+ in different types of various samples is a very important objective for chemists using effective methods. In the present work, a novel, green, easy and fast ultrasoundassisted ionic liquid-dispersive liquid phase microextraction technique (UA-IL-DLPME) was developed to preconcentrate and determine trace quantities of cadmium (Cd2+) ions from real samples, prior to detection by FAAS. Methods: The proposed technique is based on utilization of ionic liquid (IL) (1-hexyl-3- methylimidazolium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate [HMIM][FAP]) as an extraction solvent for Cd2+ ions after complexation with 2-(6-methylbenzothiazolylazo)-6-nitrophenol (MBTANP) at pH 7.0. The impact of different analytical parameters on the microextraction efficiency was investigated. The validation of the proposed procedure was verified by the test of two certified reference materials (TMDA-51.3 fortified water, SRM spinach leaves 1570A) applying the standard addition method. Results: In the range of 2.0-200 μg L−1, the calibration graph was linear. Limit of detection, preconcentration factor and the relative standard deviation (RSD %, 100 μg L-1, n=5) as precision was 0.1 μg L-1, 100 and 3.1%, respectively. Conclusion: Green UA-IL-DLPME method was developed and applied to preconcentrate and determine trace quantities of Cd2+ in real water, vegetables and hair samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract:A rapid and novel two-step dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and dispersive micro-solid phase extraction method was established for the separation and enrichment of trace cadmium, nickel, and copper in food and environmental water prior to determination by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In the first microextraction step, carbon tetrachloride was employed to extract metal-diethyldithiocarbamate chelates from aqueous solution with ultrasound. In the following step, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were added and used to collect the analytes in the organic solvent. The sample pH, type and volume of extraction solvent, mass of magnetic nanoparticles, concentration of the chelating agent, concentration of sodium chloride, and sonication time were optimized. The linear dynamic range was from 0.01 to 20 micrograms per liter with correlation coefficients between 0.9990 and 0.9992. Enrichment factors were 78, 79, and 81 for cadmium, nickel, and copper, respectively. The limits of detection for cadmium, nickel, and copper were 0.007, 0.009, and 0.017 micrograms per liter, with relative standard deviations from 1.1 to 2.6 percent. The developed method was validated by the determination of cadmium, nickel, and copper in rice and mussel certified reference materials, food, and environmental water with satisfactory results.

Abstract:Abstract A very explicate and ligand-less ultrasound-vortex-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (US-VA-DLLME) technique has been designed for the pre-concentration and extraction of ultra-trace amounts of cadmium ions, before its determination by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. In the proposed approach, a hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES), prepared from combination of salicylic acid (SA) and l-menthol (M), was studied as both the extraction solvent and the complexing agent for the extraction of cadmium ions. Some significant factors influencing the microextraction performance including pH, volume of DES, sonication time, and extraction temperature were carefully examined and optimized. The calibration curve, obtained under the optimal extraction and instrumental parameters for determination of cadmium, exhibited a wide linearity over the range of 0.001–7.5 µgL−1 (R2 = 0.9953). The proposed method provided low limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of 0.37 × 10−4 and 1.24 × 10−4 µgL−1, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) and pre-concentration factor (PF) were also evaluated as 2.65% and 125, respectively. Finally, the developed US-VA-DLLME technique was favorably applied to the separation and determination of ultra-traces of cadmium in several waters and food samples.

Abstract:A green, simple, rapid, and efficient ligandless air-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction procedure based on solidification of a ternary deep eutectic solvent was developed for the extraction of trace amounts of cadmium(II) and zinc(II) ions in aqueous samples prior to their determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. For this purpose, the deep eutectic solvent is formed by mixing sorbitol, menthol, and mandelic acid at a suitable mole ratio and after heating for a short time, a deep eutectic solvent with low density compared to water is synthesised. The synthesised solvent is used as a chelating agent and also as an extraction solvent. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the linear ranges were obtained in the ranges of 0.5–12.5 and 0.5–10.0 µg L−1 for Zn(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The relative standard deviations (n = 6, C = 2.5 µg L−1 of each cation) were 4.2% and 3.4%, for Cd(II) and Zn(II), respectively. Moreover, the obtained detection limits were 0.15 and 0.12 µg L−1 for Cd(II) and Zn(II), respectively. The accuracy of the developed method was studied by analysing SPS-WW2 Batch 108 water as a certified reference material. Abstract:The present study was designed to explore the extent to which advanced cancer pain is explicable in terms of both physical pain intensity and affect. Most notably, it expanded on previous findings by more clearly elucidating the relationship between several discrete emotional states and the total experience of cancer pain. One hundred and eleven patients with cancer pain attending a Pain and Symptom Control Clinic were studied. Visual Analogue Scales (VASs) were used to quantify overall pain intensity and the accompanying affect. Then, correlations were calculated to evaluate the relationships both between and within these two variables. Overall, the participants rated both the pain intensity and the negative affect associated with that pain as high. Of the examined affective components of pain, frustration and exhaustion were found to be the most significant. In addition, some gender differences were identified in terms of frustration, anger, fear, exhaustion, helplessness, and hopelessness. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Several smokeless tobacco products are available on the market and comprise complex chemical matrices. Sample preparation for analysis of the multiple classes of harmful compounds in smokeless tobacco products is highly cumbersome. In this study, a simultaneous extraction scheme was developed for three toxic analyte classes in smokeless tobacco products using a two‐phase solution consisting of 5% aqueous NaOH and dichloromethane in a 1:4 ratio. The dichloromethane extract was used to analyse four alkaloids directly at levels greater than ppm; however, passing the layer through a silica cartridge for further purification and concentration was necessary for determining 18 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and four volatile N‐nitrosoamines at the ppt level. The multitargets were determined using GC‐MS/MS. The LOQs for the 18 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, four volatile N‐nitrosoamines, three minor alkaloids, and nicotine were 0.2∼1.2 ng/g, 0.2∼0.4 ng/g, 0.6∼1.0 μg/g and 10.2 μg/g, respectively. Four different smokeless tobacco substrates were fortified with three levels of mixed standards, and the recoveries ranged between 83 and 110%. The method was highly efficient, reduced the sample amounts, solvents, and the time required by approximately 60%. The method was used to assay 18 smokeless tobacco products, and showed potentials in assaying drugs and other plant‐based substrates.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Preparation of a high pH-resistant AAPTS-silica coating and its application to capillary microextraction (CME) of Cu, Zn, Ni, Hg and Cd from biological samples followed by on-line ICP-MS detection

Abstract:In this work, a novel sol-gel coating of N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AAPTS)-silica was prepared for capillary microextraction (CME) of trace Cu, Zn, Ni, Hg and Cd followed by on-line ICP-MS detection. This organic-inorganic hybrid coating was in situ created on the inner walls of fused silica capillary using a sol solution containing tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) as a precursor, AAPTS as a co-precursor, ethanol as the solvent and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the template. The structure of the capillary coating was characterized by IR, SEM and TEM. Various experimental parameters affecting capillary microextraction of the target analytes have been investigated carefully, and the optimized extraction conditions were established. It was found that the AAPTS-silica coating with a terminal functional group of -NH-CH2-CH2-NH2 exhibited a high selectivity towards the selected metal ions. With a consumption of 1.0 mL sample solution and 80 microL eluent, the detection limits (3sigma) were found to be 1.8, 11.8, 1.1, 3.3 and 1.4 pg mL(-1) for Cu, Zn, Ni, Hg and Cd, respectively. A sampling frequency of 14 h(-1) and an enrichment factor of 12.5 were obtained under the optimized experimental conditions. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for the target analytes were less than 3.6% (C = 1 ng mL(-1), n = 7, sample volume = 1 mL). Two certified reference materials of NIES No.10-c rice flour and BCR-CRM 278 mussel flesh were analyzed to validate the proposed method, and the determined values were in good agreement with the certified values. The developed method had also been applied to the determination of trace target elements in human hair, serum and urine, and the recoveries for the spiked samples were in the range of 89.2-101.8%. The AAPTS-silica coated capillary showed an excellent pH resistance and could be used for more than 120 times without decreasing adsorption efficiency.

Abstract:A new solid phase microextraction (SPME) method utilizing nanodiamonds@NiCoFe-LDH for the pretreatment and extraction of Pb(II) before sample determination through FAAS was developed. NiCoFe-LDH was synthesized by using a hydrothermal synthesis technique and then combined with functionalized nanodiamonds. For the characterization of nanodiamonds@NiCoFe-LDH composite, FT-IR, FE-SEM, and XRD were utilized. The analytical parameters (pH level, amount of sorbent, concentration of eluent, volumes of sample and eluent, desorption time), i.e., pH = 8.0, 5.0 mg, 0.5 mol/L, 50 mL, 1.5 mL, and 0.5 min, respectively, were studied to set the maximum efficiency of the developed method. Additionally, matrix effects were taken into consideration during the evaluation process using the standard addition method. The limit of detection (LOD) and the preconcentration factor (PF) were obtained as 0.62 ng mL -1 and 25, respectively. To confirm the accuracy of the newly developed method, certified reference materials (CRMs) (NIST SRM 1515 apple leaves and BCR-505 estuarine water) were employed. %RSD was calculated as 2.0–8.0. The optimized method was successfully implemented to quantify Pb(II) in commercially available fruit juices of various brands and flavors procured from local markets in Kayseri, Turkey. Compared to previously reported methods, the developed method demonstrated exceptional sensitivity, achieving a remarkably low LOD.

Abstract:Herein, we realized the simultaneous online detection of six tobacco alkaloids (TM) by in-tube solid-phase microextraction (In-tube SPME) coupled with mass spectrometry by a rapid, sensitive, and matrix effect-free method requiring no chromatographic separation and only minimal sample pre-treatment. A poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-divinylbenzene-co-N, N'-methylenediacrylamide) [Poly (NIPAAm-co-DVB-co-MBAA)] monolithic column was designed according to the chemical structures of selected TM and used as an extraction medium engaging in hydrophobic, pi-pi, and hydrogen bonding interactions with analytes, allowing them to be effectively extracted. A number of important parameters were systematically optimized to achieve maximal extraction efficiency. The ion intensity of the TM signals obtained by in-tube SPME-MS were higher than the direct MS mode by about 400 folds with the signal-to-noise ratio improved by 2-7 folds. The detection limits of the six TM were determined as 1.99-4.06 ng g(-1), with good linearity with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.99 obtained under optimal extraction conditions. Besides, TA recoveries in cigarette tobacco spiked at three concentration levels were in the range of 76.4-100.2%, and the corresponding RSDs (n = 5) were obtained as 4.32-7.16%. The extraction performance of the poly (NIPAAm-co-DVB-co-MBAA) monolithic column was well reproducible, with intra- or inter-day precision RSDs determined not to exceed 7.38%. Finally, no marked matrix effects were observed when the developed method was applied to the analysis of both high-abundance and trace level TM in practical samples, and the above technique was therefore concluded to be well suited for the detection of TAs in cigarette tobacco or other products.
Comparison of the Conventional and Electroenhanced Direct-Immersion Solid-Phase Microextraction for Sampling of Nicotine in Biological Fluids of the Human Body

Abstract:A stainless steel fiber was made porous and adhesive by platinization and then coated by nanostructured polypyrrole (PPy), using an appropriate electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. The morphological surface structure and functional groups of the PPy-coated fiber were studied using SEM (Scanning electron microscope) instrument. The prepared fiber was used for comparison of direct immersion (DI) and electroenhanced direct immersion solid-phase microextraction (EE-DI-SPME) of nicotine in human plasma and urine samples followed by gas chromatography flame ionization detector (GC-FID) determination. The effects of the influential experimental parameters on the efficiency of the DI-SPME and EE-DI-SPME methods, including the pH and ionic strength of the sample solution, applied Direct current (DC) voltage, extraction temperature and time and stirring rate, were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the calibration curves for the DI-SPME-GC-FID and EE-DI-SPME-GC-FID methods were linear over the ranges of 0.1⁻10.0 μg mL-1 and 0.001⁻10.0 μg mL-1, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs, n = 6) were found to be 6.1% and 4.6% for the DI and EE strategies, respectively. The LODs (limit of detection) of the DI-SPME-GC-FID and EE-DI-SPME-GC-FID methods were found to be 10 and 0.3 ng mL-1, respectively. The relative recovery values (for the analysis of 1 µg mL-1 nicotine) were found to be 91⁻110% for EE-DI-SPME and 75⁻105% for DI-SPME. The enrichment factors for DI-SPME and EE-DI-SPME sampling were obtained as 38,734 and 50,597, respectively. The results indicated that EE-SPME was more efficient for quantitation of nicotine in biological fluids. The developed procedure was successfully carried out for the extraction and measurement of nicotine in real plasma and urine samples.

Development of new portable miniaturize solid phase microextraction of silver-APDC complex using micropipette tip in-syringe system couple with electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry

Abstract:An innovative and simple miniaturized solid phase microextraction (M-SPME) method, was developed for preconcentration and determination of silver(I) in the fresh and waste water samples. For M-SPME, a micropipette tip packed with activated carbon cloth (ACC) as sorbent, in a syringe system. The size, morphology and elemental composition of ACC before and after adsorption of analyte have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The sample solution treated with a complexing reagent, ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC), was drawn into the syringe filled with ACC and dispensed manually for 2 to 10 aspirating/dispensing cycle. Then the Ag- complex sorbed on the ACC in micropipette was quantitatively eluted by drawing and dispensing of different concentrations of acids for 2 to 5 aspirating/dispensing cycles. The extracted Ag ions with modifier were injected directly into the electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry for analysis. The influence of different variables on the extraction efficiency, including the concentration of ligand, pH, sample volume, eluent type, concentration and volume was investigated. Validity and accuracy of the developed method was checked by the standard addition method. Reliability of the proposed methodology was checked by the relative standard deviation (%RSD), which was found to be <5%. Under the optimized experimental variables, the limits of detection (LOD) and enhancement factors (EF), were obtained to be 0.86 ng L(-1) and 120, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of trace levels of silver ions in fresh and waste water samples.

Abstract:Heated tobacco products and electronic cigarettes are considered as alternatives to traditional tobacco cigarettes. However, it is crucial to monitor and compare the nicotine concentration in inhaled aerosols from these tobacco products, owing to the addictive nature and adverse effects of nicotine on human health. This study aimed to provide an electromembrane extraction (EME) combined liquid chromatography method to extract and deter-mine nicotine in different inhaled aerosols. EME showed high extraction efficiency, selectivity, and sample clean-up capability. Under the optimal parameters, the linear range for nicotine was 0.1-200 mg L-1 (r(2) > 0.9998), and the limit of detection was 0.02 mg L-1. Good precision was obtained with the intra-and inter-day relative standard deviations of 2.2 % and 2.8 %, respectively. Repeatability was satisfactory (< 7.7 %), and recoveries ranged from 81.0 % to 112.8 %. Finally, this method has been successfully used for the determination and comparison of nicotine in aerosols from these three tobacco products.
In-tube stir bar sorptive extraction based on 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane surface-modified Ce-doped ZnAl layered double hydroxide thin film for determination of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in saliva samples

Abstract:A thin-film based on 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane surface-modified Ce-doped zinc-aluminum layered double hydroxide was synthesized on the inner surface of an aluminum tube. It has been applied to in-tube stir bar sorptive extraction of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in saliva samples followed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The sorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and elemental mapping. The extraction parameters including sample pH (4.2), extraction time (10 min), stirring speed (800 rpm), type of eluent (acidified tetrahydrofuran), eluent volume (100 μL), and desorption time (6 min) were thoroughly optimized. Under the optimum conditions, limits of detection were found to be less than 5.0 ng mL-1. Calibration plots were linear within the range 10-1000 ng mL-1 (R2 > 0.9982). Absolute recoveries were calculated in the range 63.5 to 72.4%. The repeatability (intra- and inter-day precision) and reproducibility (tube-to-tube precision) at concentrations of 50, 250, and 500 ng mL-1 were less than 7.6% and 9.4%, respectively. The method accuracy based on the relative error was calculated at these concentrations and ranged from - 4.9 to - 9.3% for intra-day relative error (%) and - 6.8 to - 11% for inter-day relative error (%). Finally, the method applicability was examined for the determination of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in saliva samples, and good relative recoveries were obtained within the range 86.5 to 95.2%. As a result, the introduced method can be applied as a suitable alternative to measuring nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in biological fluids. Automated Solid Phase Extraction and Polarity-Switching Tandem Mass Spectrometry Technique for High Throughput Analysis of Urine Biomarkers for 14 Tobacco-related Compounds

Abstract:Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of premature disease and death in the United States. Approximately, 34 million U.S. adults currently smoke cigarettes. We developed a method for automated sample preparation and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry quantitation of 14 tobacco-related analytes: nicotine (NICF), cotinine (COTF), trans-3'-hydroxycotinine (HCTF), menthol glucuronide (MEG), anabasine (ANBF), anatabine (ANTF), isonicoteine (ISNT), myosmine (MYOS), beta-nicotyrine (BNTR), bupropion (BUPR), cytisine (CYTI), varenicline (VARE), arecaidine (ARD), and arecoline (ARL). The method includes automated solid-phase extraction using customized positive-pressure functions. The preparation scheme has the capacity to process a batch of 96 samples within 4 h with greater than 88% recovery for all analytes. The 14 analytes, separated within 4.15 min using reversed-phase liquid chromatography, were determined using a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer with atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization and multiple reaction monitoring in negative and positive ionization modes. Wide quantitation ranges, within 1.2-72,000 ng/mL, were established especially for COTF, HCTF, MEG, and NICF to quantify the broad range of biomarker concentrations found in the U.S. population. The method accuracy is above 90% while the overall imprecision is below 7%. Finally, we tested urine samples from 90 smokers and observed detection rates of over 98% for six analytes with urinary HCTF and MEG concentrations ranging from 200-14,100 and 60-57,100 ng/mL, respectively. This high throughput analytical process can prepare and analyze a sample in 9 min and along with the 14-compound analyte panel can be useful for tobacco-exposure studies, in smoking-cessation programs, and for detecting changes in exposure related to tobacco products and their use.
Simultaneous Determination of Tobacco Minor Alkaloids and Tobacco-Specific Nitrosamines in Mainstream Smoke by Dispersive Solid-Phase Extraction Coupled with Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography/tandem Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:Rationale The minor alkaloids in tobacco play an important role in the chemical composition of cigarette smoke, and they are precursors of tobacco‐specific nitrosamines (4‐(methylnitrosamino)‐1‐(3‐pyridyl)‐1‐butanone (NNK), N ‐nitrosonornicotine (NNN), N ‐nitrosoanabasine (NAB) and N ‐nitrosoanatabine (NAT)). NNN and NNK are classified as group 1 carcinogens. A method quantitating both tobacco minor alkaloids and tobacco‐specific nitrosamines in mainstream smoke has not been reported. Methods Tobacco minor alkaloids and tobacco‐specific nitrosamines in cigarette mainstream smoke were extracted by sonication. The extract was cleaned up by dispersive solid‐phase extraction, and separation was achieved via ultra‐performance liquid chromatography/tandem orbitrap mass spectrometry. Results The method was validated by analysis of six replicate samples spiked with three levels of the analyses. The mean recoveries for the six replicates were from 84.7% to 118% with less than 15% relative standard deviation except myosmine at the low spiked level and the calculated detection limits were 0.066 to 13.2 ng/cig, respectively. The mean concentrations of nicotyrine, anabasine, nornicotine, anatabine, myosmine, 2,3‐bipyridine, cotinine, nicotelline, N ‐formylnornicotine, NNK, NNN, NAB and NAT in 30 different brands of commercial cigarette smoke under the ISO smoking regimen were 2.50 μg/cig, 2.34 μg/cig, 3.21 μg/cig, 5.78 μg/cig, 2.83 μg/cig, 1.05 μg/cig, 1.55 μg/cig, 0.55 μg/cig, 2.48 μg/cig, 6.06 ng/cig, 3.62 ng/cig, 0.40 ng/cig and 6.15 ng/cig, respectively. Conclusions The proposed method was suitable for analysis of tobacco minor alkaloids and tobacco‐specific nitrosamines in cigarette mainstream smoke.

Abstract:In this paper, a micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) method combined with cation-selective exhaustive injection (CSEI) and sweeping was developed to separate and concentrate four tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines (TSNAs) including N′-nitrosoanabasine (NAB), 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK), 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-4-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (iso-NNAL). Experimental parameters affecting separation efficiency and enhancement factors were investigated in detail. Under the optimum MEKC condition, NAB, NNK, NNAL and iso-NNAL were baseline separated with high separation efficiencies and good peak shapes. Furthermore, with the preconcentration by CSEI–sweeping–MEKC, the sensitivity enhancement factors for NAB, NNK, NNAL and iso-NNAL in terms of peak areas ranged from 6.0×103 to 1.5×104, and the detection limits (LOD, S/N=3) of four TSNAs were in the range of 0.004–0.016μg/mL. In addition, this method had fairly good repeatability, and the RSDs of retention time and peak area were less than 1% and 5%, respectively. Finally, this method showed promising capabilities in the application of detecting and analyzing TSNAs in human urine samples.
Development of a dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction procedure based on a natural deep eutectic solvent for ligand-less preconcentration and determination of heavy metals from water and food samples

Abstract:In the current study, a ligand-less dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction technique assisted ultrasound and vortex equipment (DLLME-A-US-V) procedure was used for the simultaneous preconcentration and extraction of heavy metal ions. The proposed method was done by a natural hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent for the extraction of arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury ions without a complexing agent. The natural deep eutectic solvent was prepared from l -menthol (M) and salicylic acid (SA). The precursor of deep eutectic solvents strongly affects the extraction of metal ions. Among the studied solvents, hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents showed the highest extraction recovery. Under optimal experimental conditions, the method linearity, limits of detection (LOD), limits of quantification (LOQ), relative standard deviations (RSD %), enrichment factors (EF), and extraction recovery (% ER) were equal to 0.005–14 μg/L, 0.0043–0.0088 μg/L, 0.0143–0.0294 μg/L, 1.66–2.83 %, 112–120, and 90–96 %, respectively. The obtained coefficients of determination (r 2 ) were also higher than 0.991. This method was successfully applied to determine some heavy metals in food samples in the ultra-trace range with the recovery values of real samples being 93–108 %.
