Abstract:This work revealed the characteristics of fouling layer on the flat-sheet membranes and its development in an integrated oxidation-ditch membrane bioreactor. During the operation period (130 days), the reactor performed very well in removing pollutants. As the operation proceeded, membrane fouling occurred on the flat-sheet membranes and trans-membrane pressure showed a cyclical variation. The experimental results showed that the process of membrane fouling appeared successively in two different structures: biofilm (BF) and sludge fouling (SF). The substances causing membrane fouling were mainly organic foulants and a small amount of inorganic metal compounds, especially the protein-like and fulvic acid-like substances in loosely bound extracellular polymeric substances (LB-EPS). The analysis of microbial communities revealed that SF and BF had very different microbial properties. Although most membrane foulants could be removed by physical and chemical cleaning methods, the protein-like and fulvic acid-like substances in BF were contribute much to causing irreversible membrane fouling.

Elucidating biofouling development and succession in membrane distillation using treated effluent

Abstract:Biofouling in membrane distillation (MD) has several repercussions, including reduced efficiency of the MD process and limiting membrane life. Additionally, the evaluation of MD biofouling using treated effluents from wastewater treatment plants remains an unexplored area. Thus, biofouling formation and development in a long term MD process (15 days) using treated effluent from a wastewater treatment plant was explored in this study. The results revealed that flux decline occurred in four phases: i) initial decline (0-1 d), ii) gradual decline (1-5 d), iii) progressive decline (5-10 d), and iv) rapid decline (10-15 d). Liquid Chromatography-Organic Carbon Detection (LC-OCD) analysis demonstrated that the treated effluent contained humic-like substances, which deposited on the membrane surface in phase 1. Whereas biopolymers development on the membrane surface in phase 2 and 3 was linked to biofouling. Microbial community analysis revealed that the initial colonisers were predominantly thermophilic bacteria, which were different from the microbial community of the treated effluent. The biofilm-forming bacteria included Schlegelella, Meiothermus, and Vulcaniibacterium. These microorganisms proliferate and release excessive extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), leading to the development of mature biofilm on membrane surface. This helped in the deposition of organics and inorganics from the bulk feed, which led to microbial community succession in phase 4 with the emergence of the Kallotenue genus. The results suggested that organic substances and microbial communities on membrane surface at different stages in a long-term MD process had a significant influence on MD performance for high-quality wastewater reuse.

Abstract:Membrane fouling remains a challenge for membrane bioreactor (MBR) application to wastewater treatment. The hydrophilic/hydrophobic organics present in MBR sludge supernatant form an important part of foulant. Their effects on fouling evolution and irreversibility were systematically investigated in this study. The organics, as fractionated into hydrophilic substances (HIS), hydrophobic acids (HOA), hydrophobic bases (HOB), and hydrophobic neutrals (HON), were subjected to fouling experiments using six microfiltration membranes covering the size range of 0.1–0.45µm with varied hydrophobicity. Modeling methods were applied to quantitatively characterize the dynamic fouling process as consisting of the initial pore blocking and subsequent gel layer stages. The results demonstrated the importance of foulant concentration to fouling evolution: the apparent fouling rate on a same membrane followed the order HIS>HOA⪢HOB>HON, whereas the order became HOA>HIS with normalization of concentration to give the intrinsic propensity for fouling evolution (across the initial stage) as well as the specific resistance (for the gel layer stage). Foulant–membrane interactions (i.e. hydrophobic adsorption and size exclusion) and foulant–foulant interaction (polymer–metal–polymer complexation) were identified as key mechanisms for fouling at the initial pore blocking stage and the gel layer stage respectively, with the foulant properties of hydrophobicity, molecular size and carboxylic complexing groups closely involved in the interactions. Additionally, membrane properties were also important factors affecting the fouling behaviors of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic fractions, as suggested by the combined impact of membrane hydrophobicity and pore size on fouling evolution propensity, and the decisive role of membrane hydrophobicity in fouling irreversibility.

Abstract:The practical applications of water treatment techniques based on hydrophobic aeration membrane are limited due to membrane pores blocking. Various studies have revealed that both biofilm and microbial secretion can exacerbate membrane fouling. Recently, we constructed a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) system for treating micro-polluted surface water in order to identify the primary cause for oxygen transfer rate (OTR) decline. It was found that microbial secretion had a more prominent negative effect than that caused by biofilm, as manifested by the fact the effect of microbial secretion (66.49%) was greater than the resistance of biofilm (38.83%). Fouling decreased the total pore volume of all membrane. The peak location of adsorption capacity was more likely to occur at smaller pore sizes with longer running time. Notably, continuous fluorescence distribution between the separating layer and pores like finger in MABR system exhibited an increasing trend with the operation time, indicating a gradual increase of microbial viability. Core protein structure was revealed by different bond peaks (0–90 d). Specifically, for different organic components of EPS, the hydrophilic HIS was the main content, while the mass transfer resistance caused by the gel increased, which reduced the contact angle and increased the bubble point pressure. Therefore, effects of EPS content and composition should be considered during the application of water treatment techniques based on MABR.

Quantifying the Dynamic Evolution of Organic, Inorganic and Biological Synergistic Fouling During Nanofiltration Using Statistical Approaches

Abstract:The dynamic process of membrane fouling was characterized during relatively long-term (30 d) continuous nanofiltration (NF) of a real wastewater secondary effluent, with the roles of organic, inorganic and biological foulants quantified via statistical analyses. The analyses were based on time-series data of physical properties (morphology, roughness, hydrophilicity and charge), chemical compositions (X-ray and infrared responses) and biomass (adenosine triphosphate, ATP) on the membrane surface during fouling evolution. The individual and interactive contributions of organic factor (typical functional groups), inorganic factor (Ca as a representative) and biological factor (ATP amount) to fouling were quantified via multiple linear regression coupled with variance partitioning analysis. About 78% of the variance of filtration resistance can be explained by these factors, among which 16% was contributed by individual effect of organics (via e.g. physical adsorption), 21% by organic-inorganic binary effect (in the form of e.g. Ca-complex), 13% by organic-biological binary effect (organics as the nutrient/product of microorganisms), and 24% by organic-inorganic-biological ternary interaction. Organic matter was universally involved in these effects. The interrelations among fouling factors, foulant layer properties and filtration time were comprehensively explored via redundancy analysis, which clearly delineated the fouling evolution into three major stages: Stage I (0-1 d) for initial fouling mainly due to rapid organic adsorption; Stage II (1-10 d) mainly for the gradual growth of Ca-organic combined fouling; and Stage III (10-30 d) for the eventual maturation of biofouling. These may provide foundations for a targeted fouling control based on foulant type or fouling stage.

Abstract:This paper presents an investigation on fouling and cleaning of a tubular microfiltration membrane for municipal wastewater reclamation. A bi-level complex model, namely channel clogging and pore plugging, was introduced to elucidate the fouling mechanism. Based on 135 days of microfiltration of activated sludge, a preventive method for channel clogging was reasonably proposed and proven to be effective. Without channel clogging, the operation period was observed a five-fold increase on average, reaching 3-4 weeks. To remove pore plugging, a multi-step chemical cleaning was employed and further optimized in terms of temperature and alkaline concentration. Generally, the chemical cleaning could restore the membrane permeability to higher than 90%.

Abstract:Biofouling is the most challenging operational problem in membrane bioreactors. The goal of this study is to evaluate the foulants mechanism by profiling the foulants morphology in a membrane bioreactor treating actual sewage. A 10 m2 hollow fiber membrane was set up at MLSS of 9 g/L and HRT of 8 hours. CLSM and FESEM were used to characterize the membrane morphologies. The trans-membrane pressure was monitored, and membrane samples were analysed on weekly basis. The performance of the membrane bioreactor treating the actual sewage showed a remarkable result. The biofilm and cake layer formation dominated the majority of fouling in the MBR operation, resulting in slower permeation flux decay over time. The evaluation of fouling layers and the mechanism of biofouling development through profiling of foulant morphology using FESEM and CLSM revealed that the membrane experienced mild internal pore-clogging, implying that fouling occurred mainly on the membrane surface. The fluorescent staining of CLSM images revealed that proteins, -D-glucopyranose polysaccharides, and lipids were aggregated into clusters with protein depth thickness recorded at 22 μm. FESEM images revealed that the membrane experienced mild internal pore-clogging and had marginally reduced the overall water permeability and severely reduced the mass transfer coefficient. It can be concluded that proteins and microbial cells were the primary constituents of the fouling layer which may have contributed to the membrane performance deterioration after fouling.

Abstract:The anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) has been deemed a sustainable technology in simultaneous wastewater resource recovery and reclaimed water production. Membrane fouling is one of the most challenging issues in AnMBRs remaining to be addressed. Rather than emphasizing operational design and performance, a summarization of the existing understandings of temporal-based fouling mechanism in AnMBRs is proposed to render guidance in principle. The fouling development can be chronologically divided into three main stages: pore narrowing, pore-clogging, and gel/cake layer formation. Medium-sized soluble microbial products (SMP), soluble extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and/or small-sized colloids dominate the pore narrowing stage through strong surface interaction of the inner pore walls. Macro-molecular SMP, cell debris, and colloidal EPS mainly lead to complete pore-clogging by membrane-foulant hydrophobic interaction in terms of sieving effect on the membrane and intermediate pore-clogging by intermolecular adhesion forces and hydrodynamic bridging on the first single foulant layer. The gel layer forming stage is mainly attributed to sticky proteins and poly-saccharides in EPS, macro-molecular SMP, metal ions, and microbial colloids through the foulant-foulant interaction. Moreover, the cake layer formation stage is mainly ascribed to flocs and solids deposition, micro-bial biomass, humic substances, inorganic precipitation, and intracellular polymeric foulants through strong solid-liquid adsorptive interaction and/or solid precipitation. Specifically, the electrostatic, hydrophobic, spatial, complexing, adsorptive, and compressive interactions between the membrane and/or foulants are qualitatively discussed in detail for different fouling stages. Finally, the chronological transformation process of the fouling layer and the role of biofouling in the late stage of fouling development in AnMBRs is analyzed.
Impact of Membrane Pore Morphology on Multi-Cycle Fouling and Cleaning of Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Membranes During MBR Operation

Abstract:This study investigated the impact of membrane pore morphology on repeated fouling and physical cleaning behavior during> 1000 h operation of a membrane bioreactor process. Four microfiltration membranes with different backbone polymers (PVDF and PTFE) and varied hydrophobicity, operated in parallel, were compared. The PVDF membranes presented a porous particulate-packing morphology, while the PTFE/ PVDF blend membranes (PTFE accounting for > 80% of monomer proportion) resembled a nonwoven network of thin fibrous material. These membranes had similar short-term apparent fouling rates in a single fouling-and-cleaning cycle, but different long-term fouling development due to their physical cleaning efficiencies differing in the order: hydrophobic PVDF < < hydrophobic blend < hydrophilic (PVDF and blend) membranes, as revealed by statistical analyses. The physically irreversible fouling was likely attributed to hydrophobic adsorption onto the membranes, with the adsorbed polysaccharides and proteins detected using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The irreversibility of fouling on the blend membranes was much less sensitive to membrane hydrophobicity than that on the PVDF membranes, probably because the blend membranes had smaller adsorption propensity. For further evidence, the adsorption properties of the membranes were explored via batch tests of dynamic adsorption using model compounds, with the adsorption rate and equilibrium constants quantified using the Thomas model. The thin thread-like pore walls (which characterized the morphology of the blend membranes) may provide limited contact area for foulant adsorption, and/ or weaken the interfacial membrane-foulant interaction via shape effect. Therefore, it is suggested that membranes with thin fibrous network-like pore morphology may perform more robustly and be less troubled by adsorptive irreversible fouling for long-term operation of MBR.

Abstract:Identifying the core parameters affecting membrane fouling and analyzing fouling layer characteristics are crucial for membrane fouling mitigation of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs). This study investigated the influence of various operating parameters on membrane fouling and the characteristics of different fouling layers. The ratio of flux to specific gas demand per unit of membrane area (SGD) was proposed as a key parameter for membrane fouling control and was applicable under various flux, SGD, and sludge concentration conditions. The membrane resistance and specific filtration resistance of foulants at high flux and sludge concentration reached 1.56 × 1012 m-1 and 3.56 × 1015 m-1/kg, respectively. Solid foulants accumulated on the membrane surface during rapid fouling stage. Protein-like pollutants accounted for a higher proportion (85%) of soluble foulants on the membrane surface. Humic acids were enriched on the cake/gel layer and the longitudinal enrichment process from the cake layer to the gel layer was uneven. Proteocatella (>45%) at the phylum level, Desulfovibrio (>3.1%), Syntrophobacter (>2.8%), and Treponema (>0.25%) at the genus level colonized in the gel layer and were the pioneers of membrane biofouling. Their enrichment on the membrane surface was primarily based on their own characteristics and was less sensitive to the operating conditions of AnMBRs. Therefore, this study provides a deeper understanding of membrane fouling formation process, which contributes to the long-term stable operation of AnMBR and scales up its engineering application.
Comparison of membrane fouling during ultrafiltration with adsorption studied by Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D)

Abstract:Even though membrane technology is used in numerous industrial applications, membrane fouling is still a major challenge. Valuable information on the formation kinetics and structure of the fouling layer can be obtained by in situ real-time monitoring. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) enables the study of adsorptive fouling in situ on a model membrane. However, so far, there has been no in-depth investigation as to what extent observations from QCM-D relate to fouling during membrane filtration. This gap is here approached by comparing membrane fouling during ultrafiltration with QCM-D measurements using the same feed (process water from thermomechanical pulping) and the same material in membrane and polymer film (hydrophilized polysulfone). The performance at two temperatures (25 °C and 50 °C) was studied. Fouling was analyzed by flux measurements, changes in frequency and dissipation over time with QCM-D, and surface characterization of the membrane samples and QCM-D sensors. QCM-D revealed an increase in rigidity of the fouling layer at 50 °C with time, which was consistent with a higher irreversible resistance during ultrafiltration. This was presumably caused by structural changes of hemicelluloses and colloidal wood extractive droplets in the process water at the higher temperature. The study shows that findings from QCM-D on the attachment of foulants on polymer films are comparable to membrane fouling. QCM-D, together with complementary analytical methods, thus can provide valuable insights on the development of membrane fouling of e.g., industrial wastewater.

Adverse Events in the Removal of Naltrexone Implants

Abstract:Naltrexone implants are used as an abstinence therapy for patients with opioid, amphetamine and alcohol abuse. This study was designed to assess the implications of this therapy in patients presenting for anaesthesia for removal of these implants. We conducted a retrospective case-note review of 37 patients undergoing removal of naltrexone implants in the period 2001 to 2008 at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Indications for removal included infection at the insertion site, naltrexone intolerance or the requirement for effective opioid analgesia. Thirty-two patients had surgery under general anaesthesia, four under local anaesthesia and one under spinal anaesthesia. The perioperative opioid requirement varied from 0 to 100 mg of intravenous morphine equivalents (median 11.7 mg, mean 20.7 mg). The only factor that was associated with a higher perioperative opioid requirement was whether the implant was infected or not. Forty-four percent of patients having a general anaesthetic complained of moderate to severe pain postoperatively, and 64% of these patients had a prolonged stay in the post-anaesthesia care unit. We did not observe any instances of postoperative complications due to increased opioid sensitivity after removal of naltrexone implants. The majority of patients were discharged home by the first postoperative day. Anaesthesia for the removal of naltrexone implants was associated with a wide range of opioid analgesia requirements and a high incidence of pain postoperatively. Concern regarding increasing opioid sensitivity after removal of implants does not seem to preclude use of generous opioid analgesia in this group of patients.
Probing The Key Foulants And Membrane Fouling Under Increasing Salinity In Anaerobic Osmotic Membrane Bioreactors For Low-Strength Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:Anaerobic osmotic membrane bioreactors (AnOMBRs) have attracted much attention in recent years due to their ability to produce high-quality effluent with low energy demand. Here, the performance of a thin film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membrane in an AnOMBR system is evaluated, and the key membrane foulants are examined by analyzing the characteristics of the mixed liquor and the fouling layer. As the experiment progressed, the water flux declined due to membrane fouling and salt accumulation in the bioreactor, and reached approximately 3.5 LMH by the end of each operating cycle where membrane cleaning was adopted. The conductivity increased from 3.3 mS/cm to 23.6 mS/cm over the 28-day treatment. The contaminant rejection rates of total organic carbon, total phosphorous and ammonia-nitrogen were more than 93%, 98% and 60%, respectively. Results also suggested that extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) was the major contributor to membrane fouling, and the increase of EPS in the mixed liquor with salinity was primarily composed of polysaccharides. The comprehensive characterization of the fouling layer via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and confocal laser scanning microcopy (CLSM) revealed the coexistence of biofouling and organic fouling. The CLSM images further demonstrated the prevalence of ? polysaccharides, proteins and microorganisms on the fouled TFC FO membrane surface. In addition, the flow cytometric analysis indicated that the foulant sample was ?bacterial viable?, the large number of bacteria in suspension (96.61% live cells) maybe corresponded to the high EPS content in the bulk mixed liquor.
Interplay of organic components in membrane fouling evolution: Statistical evidence from multiple spectroscopic analyses

Abstract:Membrane fouling is a complex process that can be caused by multiple organic foulants such as polysaccharides, proteins and humic substances. The key mechanisms, especially interactions between coexisting foulant components, have yet to be well understood. This study proposes a combination of spectral and statistical methods to unravel the interactive role of typical organic foulants during microfiltration, taking bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA) and sodium alginate (SA) as examples. Results show that the membrane effluent spectra (ultraviolet absorption, fluorescence and circular dichroism) can differentiate the state of foulant interception at the pore adsorption/blocking stage (BSA and HA actively involved) and gel/cake layer stage (SA dominant). Multivariate redundancy analysis revealed interrelations between the spectral characteristics of the effluent and surface fouling layer. Accumulation of proteins and polysaccharides in the fouling layer was detected by infrared spectroscopy while that of humics was more sensitively reflected by Raman spectroscopy, as confirmed by nonnegative linear least square fitting of time-series spectral data during fouling evolution. A variance partitioning analysis nested in multiple linear regression of the infrared or Raman signals offered further statistical evidence for the interplay of organic components by quantifying the single/double/triple-component contributions to the total fouling response. It revealed that ternary BSA × HA × SA interplay is prominent at the initial pore adsorption/blocking stage whereas binary HA × SA interplay prevails at the later gel/cake layer stage. Such role shifting of foulant interactions during the fouling process might provide useful information for a more accurate understanding and control of fouling. The combined spectral and statistical methods, which can effectively trace inter-component relations and link molecular fingerprints to fouling behavior, are particularly promising for exploring fouling mechanisms in complex systems.

Abstract:Abstract Specific growth rates, doubling times, and temperature characteristics were determined for 12 cultures of 9 species of Bacillus that had been isolated from milk and found able to grow at low temperatures. Cultures of Group A, psychrophilic strains of B. subtilis, B. circulans, and B. coagulans, grew at 0±1C and had growth characteristics similar to those reported for psychrophilic species of Pseudomonas . Eight cultures of Group B had minimal growth temperatures of 5 to 7C and other growth characteristics between those reported for psychrophilic species Pseudomonas and those reported for mesophilic bacteria. Doubling times for B. circulans RH3, B. laterosporus, and B. coagulans F8 in milk at 7.2C were 5, 5.5, and 7 hours. These three cultures produced fruity flavor in milk, followed by the production of rancidity by B. circulans RH3 and unclean flavor by the other two cultures. Plate counts at the time of detecting off-flavor were between 1.0×10 6 and 1.0×10 7 per milliliter for B. coagulans F8 and B. laterosporus and about 5.0×10 7 for B. circulans RH3.
Effect of Membrane Pore Morphology on Microfiltration Organic Fouling: PTFE/PVDF Blend Membranes Compared with PVDF Membranes

Abstract:This study provides an insight into the effect of membrane pore morphology on microfiltration organic fouling, by comparing the fouling behaviors of a series of polytetrafluoroethylene/polyvinylidene fluoride (PTFE/PVDF) blend membranes with those of PVDF membranes at varied hydrophobicity and pore size levels. Unlike the PVDF membrane pore morphology which resembled particulate bed, the PTFE/PVDF blend membrane morphology was characterized as fibrous network with thread-like pore walls and interconnected pore channels of high structural complexity. Fouling evolution rate and irreversibility of these membranes were assessed using batch filtration tests, with a membrane bioreactor supernatant employed as the foulant. Fouling of the PVDF membranes deteriorated significantly with increasing hydrophobicity and decreasing pore size. By comparison, all the blend membranes showed moderate fouling, much less sensitive to hydrophobicity and pore size. It was demonstrated that hydrophobicity and pore size pertain to hydrophobic adsorption and size exclusion respectively, which are fundamental membrane–foulant interactions for promoting fouling. Pore morphology may affect fouling by influencing these interactions. For the case of the blend membranes, it was inferred that the thread-like pore walls with limited adsorption area discouraged hydrophobic adsorption, while the high structural complexity encouraged size exclusion on the other hand.
Non-destructive monitoring and prediction of fouling by organic matters and residual anionic coagulant during membrane process

Abstract:Physical fouling characteristics on silicon carbide (SiC) membranes induced by various organic matter compounds vary depending on the presence of calcium ions (Ca2+). Both destructive techniques (morphological surface analysis) and non-destructive techniques (fouling properties monitoring) were used to determine the fouling mechanisms and behavior during the membrane filtration systems. Destructive analysis and a modified Hermia model were employed to assess the fouling mechanisms. Fouling behavior was also analyzed through non-destructive monitoring techniques including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and three-dimensional laser scanning confocal microscopy (3D-LSM). At concentrations of 10, 30, and 100 mg/L without Ca2+, the flux decreased by 57-95% for humic acid (HA) and anionic polyacrylamide (APAM). APAM exhibited a notable removal rate of up to 56% without Ca2+. At concentration of 10, 30, and 100 mg/L in the absence of Ca2+, the flux decreased by 6-8% for sodium alginate (SA). However, the addition of Ca2+ led to a reduction in the flux for SA by up to 91% and resulted in a removal rate of 40%. Furthermore, addition of Ca2+ led to an alteration of the fouling characteristics of HA and SA. In the case of HA, higher concentrations resulted in elevated thickness and roughness with correlation coefficients of 0.991 and 0.992, respectively. For SA, increased SA concentration led to a thicker (correlation coefficient of 0.999) but smoother surfaces (correlation coefficients of 0.502). Monitoring of these physical characteristics of the fouling layer through non-destructive analysis is crucial for effective fouling management, optimization of the system performance and extending the lifespan of the membrane. By continuously assessing the fouling layer thickness and surface roughness, we expect to be able to provide insights on the fouling behavior, identify trends, that can help scientists and engineers to make informed decisions regarding fouling control strategies in future.

Abstract:Nanofibre-supported forward osmosis (FO) membranes have gained popularity owing to their low structural parameters and high water flux. However, the nanofibrous membranes are less stable in long-term use, and their fouling behaviours with foulants in both feed solution (FS) and draw solution (DS) is less studied. This study developed a nanofibrous thin-film composite (TFC) FO membrane by designing a tiered dual-layer nanofibrous substrate to enhance membrane stability during long-term usage and cleaning. Various characterisation methods were used to study the effect of the electrospun nanofibre interlayer and drying time, which is the interval after removing the M-phenylenediamine (MPD) solution and before reacting with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) solution, on the intrinsic separation FO performance. The separation performance of the dual-layer nanofibrous FO membranes was examined using model foulants (sodium alginate and bovine serum albumin) in both the FS and DS. The dual-layer nanofibrous substrate was superior to the single-layer nanofibrous substrate and showed a flux of 30.2 L/m2/h (LMH) when using 1.5 mol/L NaCl against deionised (DI) water in the active layer facing draw solution (AL-DS) mode. In the fouling test, the water flux was effectively improved without sacrificing the water/solute selectivity under the condition that foulants existed in both the FS and DS. In addition, the dual-layer nanofibrous TFC FO membrane was more robust during the fouling test and cleaning.

Abstract:Surface patterning has emerged as a promising method to control membrane fouling by disturbing the flow field on the membrane surface. In this study, fouling development was non-destructively characterized by optical coherence tomography (OCT), while the micro hydraulic conditions and particle migration trajectories were investigated by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Preliminary results demonstrated remarkable anti-fouling performance of the MNF membrane, and CFD simulation revealed that the local flow velocity on the apex area of patterns was greatly accelerated and the vortex among the valley regions was continuously generated. These hydraulic characteristics resulted in the enhancement of the hydrodynamic lift force (fL) and decrease of the permeation drag (fD) enforced on the retained foulants by the MNF membrane. Moreover, particle trajectories simulation integrated with comprehensive forces allowed to understand the influence mechanism of the flow field around MNF membrane surface on particle deposition. This study presents a new understanding of the anti-fouling mechanism of the MNF membranes and provides new insights into the design of self-cleaning membranes.

Abstract:Membrane fouling remains a significant challenge in wastewater treatment, hindering both efficiency and lifespan. This study reports a distinct phenomenon of stratified membrane clogging observed in a full-scale cross-flow tubular ultrafiltration (UF) system treating sludge anaerobic digestion (AD) reject water. The distinct stratified structure, comprising inner and outer layers within the cake layer, has not been previously described. This research involved characterizing the filtration performance, analyzing membrane clog composition, and proposing a two-stage formation mechanism for the stratified clogs. It was revealed that higher inorganic and lower organic content in the outer layer compared to the inner layer. Acid and alkali treatments demonstrated the effectiveness of combined cleaning strategies. A mathematical model was developed to determine the critical conditions for stratified clog formation, influenced by membrane flux and cross-flow velocity (CFV). It is proposed that outer layer forms through long-term selective deposition, while the inner layer results from short-term dewatering within limited tubular space. High CFV (>2.5 m/s) prevents inner layer formation. Critical conditions for stratification occur at a flux of 18 L/m2/h with a CFV of 0.1 m/s or 65 L/m2/h with a CFV of 0.35 m/s. This study contributes a novel understanding of stratified membrane clogging, proposing a two-stage formation mechanism and identifying critical conditions, which provides insights for effective fouling control strategies and maintenance of operational efficiency for membrane systems.
