Abstract:We previously used simulations of gene expression to demonstrate that rapid activation and deactivation rates stabilized outcomes in stochastic systems. We hypothesized that transient single allele inactivation of an autosomal gene during gametogenesis or very early embryogenesis could have a selective advantage if it permits the functional sampling of each allele and precludes committing maternal effort to an embryo with a deleterious mutation. To test this hypothesis, we simulated the evolution of gene expression activation and deactivation rates and imposed two different selective pressures on the populations: (a) late selection against individuals that cannot maintain a threshold level of gene product that occurs after the investment of maternal effort (i.e., after birth); or (b) early selection: in addition to late selection, maintenance of the gene product above a threshold level was necessary for early development prior to commitment of maternal effort. We found that the opportunity to save reproductive effort from early selection caused the evolution of higher deactivation rates and lower activation rates than in the late selection condition. Thus, we predict that in the special case where early selection can save maternal investment in non-viable offspring, gene expression activation rates and deactivation rates might be selected to permit sampling of the product from each allele.

Abstract:This article aimed to explain the reasons why Asian spices including pepper, ginger, and cinnamon were considered as special and valuable drugs with curative powers in the Medieval Europe. Among these spices, pepper was most widely and frequently used as medicine according to medieval medical textbooks. We analyzed three main pharmacology books written during the Middle Ages. One of the main reasons that oriental spices were widely used as medicine was due to the particular medieval medical system fundamentally based on the humoral theory invented by Hippocrates and Galen. This theory was modified by Arab physicians and imported to Europe during the Middle Ages. According to this theory, health is determined by the balance of the following four humors which compose the human body: blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. Each humor has its own qualities such as cold, hot, wet, and dry. Humoral imbalance was one of the main causes of disease, so it was important to have humoral equilibrium. Asian spices with hot and dry qualities were used to balance the cold and wet European diet. The analysis of several major medical textbooks of the Middle Ages proves that most of the oriental spices with hot and dry qualities were employed to cure diverse diseases, particularly those caused by coldness and humidity. However, it should be noted that the oriental spices were considered to be much more valuable and effective as medicines than the local medicinal ingredients, which were not only easily procured but also were relatively cheap. Europeans mystified oriental spices, with the belief that they have marvelous and mysterious healing powers. Such mystification was related to the terrestrial Paradise. They believed that the oriental spices were grown in Paradise which was located in the Far East and were brought to the Earthly world along the four rivers flowing from the Paradise.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: The history of Chinese spices has received increasing attention in recent years, but little research been carried out on where they fit on the food-medicine continuum for early China, during the formation of the classical medical system. This paper describes how the synaesthetic qualities of spices attracted a particular analysis in that emerging system which serves to mark them as different to other medical materials and foodstuffs. We aim to clarify the special role created for spices to accommodate their boundary-crossing synaesthetic action on the body. Material and methods: This paper analyses the contents of several spice bags excavated in 1972 from a tomb that was closed in the second century BCE. It uses archaeological reports of material culture together with the early Chinese textual record, extant in both manuscripts and received texts, to bring out the role of spices in ritual, food and medicine. Results: Noting that the flavours and aromas of early China were assigned physiological potency in the first centuries BCE, we argue that by medieval times the unique synaesthetic role that spices played in mediating the senses was systematically medicalised. While being deployed for the purpose of curing disease in medicine, they also remained within the realm of everyday healthcare, and religious practice, deployed both as aromatics to perfume the environment, attracting benign spirits, but also to ward off the agents of disease, as well as for enhancing health through their use in cookery. Conclusion: While foodstuffs entered the digestive system spices were all considered 'pungent' in the emerging clasical medical system. They acted on the body through the nose and lungs, making them neither food nor drug. This implicit categorisation medicalised spices which, like music, could affect the passions and lighten the spirit, codifying observations about the impact on the body of the ritual environment.

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often described as a disorder of aberrant neural connectivity. Although it is important to study the pathophysiology of ASD in the developing cortex, the functional connectivity in the brains of young children with ASD has not been well studied. In this study, brain activity was measured non-invasively during consciousness in 50 young human children with ASD and 50 age- and gender-matched typically developing human (TD) children. We employed a custom child-sized magnetoencephalography (MEG) system in which sensors were located as close to the brain as possible for optimal recording in young children. We focused on theta band oscillations because they are thought to be involved in long-range networks associated with higher cognitive processes. The ASD group showed significantly reduced connectivity between the left-anterior and the right-posterior areas, exhibiting a decrease in the coherence of theta band (6 Hz) oscillations compared with the TD group. This reduction in coherence was significantly correlated with clinical severity in right-handed children with ASD. This is the first study to demonstrate reduced long-range functional connectivity in conscious young children with ASD using a novel MEG approach.
Conserving traditional wisdom in a commodified landscape: Unpacking brand Ayurveda

Abstract:As Ayurveda continues to gain global recognition as a sanctioned system of health care, the essence of Ayurveda's identity has become prey to commoditization and commodification for commercial undertakings in the holistic health milieu of India, but also in emerging markets such as Europe. This paper critically assesses the commodification of Ayurveda as a cultural signifier within Europe that separates the indigenous artefact from its Vedic origins. Often presented as an elite commodity in Western settings, Ayurveda has become embedded as a cultural artifact within consumer society as the epitome of holistic care with an emphasis on its spiritual attributes, yet simultaneously isolating it from the customary elements that motivated its inception. The paper argues that Ayurveda's discursive detachment from its ontological tenets facilitates its rearticulation as a malleable experience as it crosses national boundaries, and in this process fosters the misinterpretation of the ancient healing tradition. This process may provide Ayurvedic treatments and principles with increased visibility in Europe's health sector. However, brands are exploiting this niche with push-marketing strategies to capitalize on the budding Ayurveda industry, turning traditional medicines into emblematic commodities. To advance this argument, we examine product diversions in the commodification of classical Ayurvedic medicines in the Netherlands and Germany, focusing on the over-the-counter (OTC) segment. We present an interpretive analysis of the processes that are (de)constructing traditional practices and principles as Ayurveda travels beyond India, and how this complicates issues of authenticity and expertise as herbal medicines diverge from the indications ratified in Ayurveda's classical compendiums.

Abstract:Spices, condiments and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) are crucial components of human history and nutrition. They are substances added to foods to improve flavor and taste. Many of them are used not only to flavor foods, but also in traditional medicine and cosmetics. They have antioxidant, antiviral, antibiotic, anticoagulant and antiinflammatory properties and exciting potential for preventing chronic degenerative diseases such as cardiomyopathy and cancer when used in the daily diet. Research and development in this particular field are deeply rooted as the consumer inclination towards natural products is significant. It is essential to let consumers know the beneficial effects of the daily consumption of spices, condiments and extra virgin olive oil so that they can choose them based on effects proven by scientific works and not by the mere illusion that plant products are suitable only because they are natural and not chemicals. The study begins with the definition of spices, condiments and extra virgin olive oil. It continues by describing the pathologies that can be prevented with a spicy diet and it concludes by considering the molecules responsible for the beneficial effects on human health (phytochemical) and their eventual transformation when cooked.

Abstract:Herbal medicines and nutraceuticals are becoming increasingly popular and more and more individuals are turning to these products to tackle a wide range of health-related issues. In the last 10 years alone, the use of herbal medicine has spiked significantly in the world, where herbal and natural drug preparations have made their way into drug stores, food stores, and supermarkets. About 70% of the global population which make up about 4 billion people see herbal medicines as the primary source of health care. Orthodox medicinal practice and the use of herbs is an essential part of the culture of these communities The United Kingdom, North America, Europe, and Australia are also beginning to recognize the benefits of herbal remedies and are working to bring Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) into mainstream therapeutics. UK and Europe, interestingly, have a well-reported history when it comes to the use of traditional herbal medicines. The primary school of thought behind the uplift in the use of herbal medicines is that it will promote a healthier lifestyle among the population of rich countries where obesity and sedentary lifestyle are bigger problems. Considered a moderate approach to healing, people in developed countries spend billions on herbal medicines as traditional home remedies and over-the-counter drugs. Henceforth, it is reasonable to conclude that the sales of traditional medicines will rise and this boom will allow herbal products to make a substantial chunk of the international drug market With the advent of herbal medicines and their use becoming increasingly common, questions with regard to their safety are also being raised. Herbal medicines, even today, remain untested and most of their use goes unregulated despite the fact that they bear significant therapeutic potential. Henceforth, there is little information about the potentially harmful effects of these products and how their use can be rationalized. The safety of these traditional therapies is further questioned due to the absence of quality control, poor labeling, and insufficient patient information. It is vital that healthcare professionals and the general public both be made aware of the traditional medicines in order to ensure maximum health benefits for them as well as enhance the quality of these herbal products. However, challenges remain to tackle matters pertaining to the toxicity of herbal medicines as well as the factors that are associated with increasing/decreasing them. It is time to ensure the safety of these traditional herbal products by drawing the attention of the regulatory bodies to the need of making sure appropriate safety of public health.

Abstract:Through a comprehensive review of the records and use of Chinese medicine in medieval Western Asia, this article believes that the foreign exchange of Chinese medicine is a two-way process.The western Asian doctors’ cognition of traditional Chinese medicine and their unique writing method have reflected the local cultural characteristics, enriched the treasure reserve of Islamic medical knowledge, and also promote the development of medicine.The interest of West Asian scholars in traditional Chinese medicine is not only closely related to medical practice, trade interests and academic exchanges, but also related to cultural imagination, which reflects their exotic feelings towards China as a faraway place.

Abstract:Nowadays, attention is being focused on the investigation of the efficacy of plant in the traditional medicine because they are cheap and have little side effects. Synthetic preservatives, which have been used in foods for decades, may lead to negative health consequences. Moreover, the use of synthetic compounds has significant drawbacks, such as increasing cost, handling hazards, concerns about residues on food, and threat to human environment. As a good alternative, spices and herbs replace synthetic preservatives as natural, effective, and non-toxic compounds. Spices and herbs (garlic, mustard, cinnamon, cumin, clove, thyme, basil, pepper, ginger, rosemary, etc.) have been used as food additives since ancient times, as flavoring agents and natural food preservatives. A number of spices show antimicrobial activity against different types of microorganisms. The consumption of herbal medicines is increasing steadily throughout the world as an alternative treatment for alleviating a number of health problems including heart diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even certain types of cancer. However, unlike drugs, herbal products are not regulated for purity and potency. Herbal drugs are considered as food integrators and readily available in the market without prescription. This chapter highlights potential benefits and possible risks associated with consumption of herbal products. Antimicrobial activity of spices and herbs as well as some essential oils against most common bacteria and fungi that contaminate food is also discussed.
Commercialized "Smudge Sticks" Used as Incense in the Netherlands: An Inventory of Plants and Trends Behind a New Age Fashion

Abstract:Incense is essential in religious ceremonies, even in relatively new religious and spiritual movements such as New Age and Neopaganism. These garner little attention from ethnobotanists, although they trigger an international trade in wild-harvested plants. In this paper, we studied the botanical ingredients of smudge sticks (dried plant bundles burned for purification) in the Netherlands, and people's motivations to use them posing the following questions: what plant species are included in smudge sticks? what are they used for? and are exotic plants preferred over native Dutch plant species? We visited online and physical shops in Dutch cities, acquiring a total of 29 different smudge sticks containing at least 15 species. We held semi-structured interviews with 11 users, vendors, and herbal experts, and collected data from 33 questionnaires. Salvia apiana L. was most frequently found, along with North American species of the genus Artemisia. The rise of the New Age movement resulted in North American ritual plant species being easily available in (online) shops in the Netherlands and smudge sticks being used for personal protection and cleansing. Despite the smudge sticks' commercial demand, there is no data regarding the pressure on wild populations of species used in these bundles. For the preservation of these species it is crucial that scientific monitoring of their harvest is undertaken in the future.

From Phytochemicals to Recipes: Health Indications and Culinary Uses of Herbs and Spices

Abstract:Herbs and spices each contain about 3000 phytochemicals on average and there is much traditional knowledge on their health benefits. However, there is a lack of systematic study to understand the relationship among herbs and spices, their phytochemical constituents, their potential health benefits, and their usage in regional cuisines. Here we use a network-based approach to elucidate established relationships and predict novel associations between the phytochemicals present in herbs and spices with health indications. Our top 100 inferred indication-phytochemical relationships rediscover 40% known relationships and 20% that have been inferred via gene-chemical interactions with high confidence. The remaining 40% are hypotheses generated in a principled way for further experimental investigations. We also develop an algorithm to find the minimum set of spices needed to cover a target group of health conditions. Drawing on spice usage patterns in several regional Indian cuisines, and a copy-mutate model for regional cuisine evolution, we characterize the spectrum of health conditions covered by existing regional cuisines. The spectrum of health conditions can expand through the nationalization/globalization of culinary practice.

Cross-cultural Transfer of Medical Knowledge in the Medieval Mediterranean: The Introduction and Dissemination of Sugar-based Potions from the Islamic World to Byzantium

Abstract:This article aims to challenge the traditional narrative about the progression of medical knowledge from Arabic to Latin by including the role of the Byzantine world in that process. It examines critically the steady diffusion of Arabic medical knowledge throughout Byzantium by focusing on the introduction and dissemination of sugar-based potions. By studying for the first time a substantial body of mostly unedited translations of Arabic medical texts into Greek and works by Byzantine medical authors, this article argues that Byzantine literature and culture were more lively than they are given credit for and that-by medieval standards-Byzantine authors were quite open to outside influence. Moreover, it emphasizes that the subsequent use of sugar in Byzantine daily medical practice constituted a significant investment in health, especially bearing in mind the high cost involved in the cultivation, production, and transportation of sugar. Finally, it points to the regular use of sugar in medical practice from the late eleventh/early twelfth century onward, at least, in Constantinople, which suggests constant importing of the commodity, despite the fact that the first source confirming the trading of sugar in the Byzantine capital dates to the first half of the fourteenth century.

Abstract:This essay explores the relationships between food and health in Chinese history, from ancient times to the present. It briefly reviews how historians have written about dietary knowledge in China's past, from a midcentury focus on discoveries that prefigured those of modern nutrition science to a more expansive recent understanding of healthy eating. From there, the piece draws on scholarship from the past 2 decades to highlight the complexity of pre‐modern Chinese ideas about food and its connection to ritual, social order, moral rectitude, pleasure, and physical and emotional well‐being, all of which factored into dietetic prescriptions and prohibitions. Finally, the last section focuses on the modern period. It suggests that while Western foods and nutrition science acquired great prestige in early twentieth‐century China, by the early 21st century both had lost some of their luster, and interest in classical and folk understandings of diet—inflected by the postsocialist political and economic order—was again flourishing.

Abstract:This paper investigates the ways in which an electricity capacity market design may encourage generators to exaggerate their available capacity. For concrete analysis, a simple two-player discrete game model is introduced, focusing on two pure strategy Nash equilibria: an equilibrium at which generators offer their true capacities, and an equilibrium at which generators offer exaggerated capacities. Consideration of the current capacity market design leads us to conclude that the more conservative the independent system operator's capacity procurement, the higher the risk of exaggerated capacity offers. We also provide an extended continuous game model, and the analysis shows that when the ISO's capacity procurement is not conservative enough, the strategic generators will withhold their capacity offers, while, if the ISO's capacity procurement is too conservative, then the strategic generators will offer more than their true capacity. For illustration, a numerical example is presented.

Abstract:Abstract All of the articles in this special issue show the necessity of having to combine different kinds of sources—texts with images, images with objects, and objects with absences—to build an integrated history of the material worlds of food in the early modern period. They also reflect newer approaches to materiality which are sensitive to the relationship between matter and the senses and consider the haptic, visual, olfactory, and even aural aspects of cooking and eating alongside taste. In turn, the tastes of collectors and the fragility and absence of source material also need to be taken into consideration in order to write a meaningful cultural and social history of food. Despite the ephemeral nature of eating and cooking, this special issue shows that the sources studied by historians of material culture of the early modern period are remarkably rich, and their analysis fruitful.

Abstract:The perception of taste and flavour (a combination of taste, smell, and chemesthesis), here also referred to as chemosensation, enables animals to find high-value foods and avoid toxins. Humans have learned to use unpalatable and toxic substances as medicines, yet the importance of chemosensation in this process is poorly understood. Here, we generate tasting-panel data for botanical drugs and apply phylogenetic generalised linear mixed models to test whether intensity and complexity of chemosensory qualities as well as particular tastes and flavours can predict ancient Graeco-Roman drug use. We found chemosensation to be strongly predictive of therapeutic use: botanical drugs with high therapeutic versatility have simple yet intense tastes and flavours, and 21 of 22 chemosensory qualities predicted at least one therapeutic use. In addition to the common notion of bitter tasting medicines, we also found starchy, musky, sweet, and soapy drugs associated with versatility. In ancient Greece and Rome, illness was thought to arise from imbalance in bodily fluids or humours, yet our study suggests that uses of drugs were based on observed physiological effects that are often consistent with modern understanding of chemesthesis and taste receptor pharmacology.

Abstract:Medicinal or herbal spices are grown in tropical moist evergreen forestland, surrounding most of the tropical and subtropical regions of Eastern Himalayas in India (Sikkim, Darjeeling regions), Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, a few Central Asian countries, Middle East, USA, Europe, South East Asia, Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia. According to the cultivation region surrounded, economic value, and vogue, these spices can be classified into major, minor, and colored tropical spices. In total, 24 tropical spices and herbs (cardamom, black jeera, fennel, poppy, coriander, fenugreek, bay leaves, clove, chili, cassia bark, black pepper, nutmeg, black mustard, turmeric, saffron, star anise, onion, dill, asafoetida, celery, allspice, kokum, greater galangal, and sweet flag) are described in this review. These spices show many pharmacological activities like anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, central nervous system, and antioxidant activities. Numerous bioactive compounds are present in these selected spices, such as 1,8-cineole, monoterpene hydrocarbons, γ-terpinene, cuminaldehyde, trans-anethole, fenchone, estragole, benzylisoquinoline alkaloids, eugenol, cinnamaldehyde, piperine, linalool, malabaricone C, safrole, myristicin, elemicin, sinigrin, curcumin, bidemethoxycurcumin, dimethoxycurcumin, crocin, picrocrocin, quercetin, quercetin 4'-O-β-glucoside, apiol, carvone, limonene, α-phellandrene, galactomannan, rosmarinic acid, limonene, capsaicinoids, eugenol, garcinol, and α-asarone. Other than that, various spices are used to synthesize different types of metal-based and polymer-based nanoparticles like zinc oxide, gold, silver, selenium, silica, and chitosan nanoparticles which provide beneficial health effects such as antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-diabetic, enzyme retardation effect, and antimicrobial activity. The nanoparticles can also be used in environmental pollution management like dye decolorization and in chemical industries to enhance the rate of reaction by the use of catalytic activity of the nanoparticles. The nutritional value, phytochemical properties, health advantages, and both traditional and modern applications of these spices, along with their functions in food fortification, have been thoroughly discussed in this review.

Abstract:The presence of xenobiotic-inducible CYP1A1, 2B1/2, and 3A1/2 in rat lung mitochondria was investigated using mitochondrial preparations of defined purity. The mitochondrial P450 content in uninduced lung was 1.5-fold higher compared to microsomes. Administration of BNF induced the P450 contents by twofold in both mitochondrial and microsomal membrane fractions. BNF treatment induced EROD activity to about 40-fold in the microsomal fraction and 25-fold in the mitochondrial fraction. The microsomal induction was observed at 4 days of BNF treatment, while the mitochondrial induction required 10 days of treatment. Consistent with the activity profile, Western blot analysis showed the presence of CYP1A1 antibody reactive protein only in lung mitochondria from BNF-treated rats. BNF administration also caused a 50 to 80% reduction in the CYP2B1/2-associated PROD and BROD activities and CYP3A1/2-associated ERND activity in both mitochondria and microsomes. There was also a parallel reduction in the antibody reactive CYP2B1/2 and 3A1/2 proteins in both of these membrane fractions. Administration of DEX for 4 days induced mitochondrial and microsomal ERND activity by 1. 7- and 2.5-fold, respectively. Mitochondrial EROD activity was inhibited by antibodies to P450MT2, as well as Adx, but not by antibody against P450 reductase, indicating the mitochondrial localization of CYP1A1. Protease protection and alkaline extraction experiments indicated that CYP1A1 associated with lung mitochondria is localized inside the inner membrane and exists as a membrane extrinsic protein. In summary, this is probably the first report of inducible P450s in rat lung mitochondria, and our results suggest a possible functional role for these mitochondrial enzymes in xenobiotic metabolism.
