Abstract:Utilizing the unique vertical aerobic-anoxic-anerobic ecological enviornment of landfills and adopting intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse, this paper studied the performance of leachate nitrogen removal in the bioreactor landfill system. The results showed that intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse could stimulate the growth of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. The population of denitrifying bacteria was 4 to approximately 13 orders of magnitude higher than that in conventional landfilled waste layers, and the maximal value of nitrifying bacteria population reached 10(9) cells g(-1). The bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse increased the potential of nitrogen removal from re-circulated leachate in the landfill bioreactor. By the end of the experiment, the concentrations of leachate NH4(+) -N and total nitrogen (TN) decreased to 186 mg x L(-1) and 289 mg x L(-1), being only 18% and 26% of control, respectively. Intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse also accelerated refuse decomposition, and increased the degree of waste stabilization.

Abstract:High ammonia concentration of recycled landfill leachate makes it very difficult to treat. In this work, a vertical aerobic/anoxic/anaerobic lab-scale bioreactor landfill system, which was constructed by intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled waste, as a bioreactor for in situ nitrogen removal was investigated during waste stabilization. Intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled waste might stimulate the growth of nitrifying bacteria and denitrifying bacteria in the top and middle layers of waste. The nitrifying bacteria population for the landfill bioreactor with intermittent aeration system reached between106 and 108cells/dryg waste, although it decreased 2 orders of magnitude on day 30, due to the inhibitory effect of the acid environment and high organic matter in the landfilled waste. The denitrifying bacteria population increased by between 4 and 13 orders of magnitude compared with conventional anaerobic landfilled waste layers. Leachate NO3−–N concentration was very low in both two experimental landfill reactors. After 105 days operation, leachate NH4+–N and TN concentrations for the landfill reactor with intermittent aeration system dropped to 186 and 289mg/l, respectively, while they were still kept above 1000mg/l for the landfill reactor without intermittent aerobic system. In addition, there is an increase in the rate of waste stabilization as well as an increase of 12% in the total waste settlement for the landfill reactor with intermittent aeration system.

Abstract:Passive aeration has been proven to be efficient for oxygen supply in landfill. The combination of passive aeration and semi-aerobic landfill offers a cost-effective and energy-efficient approach to solid waste (SW) treatment. However, determining the optimal strategy for this combination has remained unclear. This study aimed to investigate the strategy of passive aeration in a semi-aerobic landfill using numerical simulation methods. A model coupled hydrodynamic model and compartment model for degradation of SW was implemented. The accuracy was well validated by comparing measured and simulated results in a pilot-scale landfill. Compared with natural convection, passive aeration by funnel caps could increase air input by 20 %. By simulating volumetric fraction distribution of CO2, CH4 and O2 in landfill, an orthogonal experiment including 4 factors was designed to identify that the diameter of tubes (DT), the spacing between tubes (ST) and the landfill depth (LD) have substantial impacts on aerobic zone ratio (AZR) of landfill. But the diameter of gas ports (DGP) has an indiscernible effect. The optimized factors were determined to be as follows: DT = 0.3 m, ST = 15.0 m, DGP = 0.05 m, and LD = 4.0 m, under which the semi-aerobic landfill could enhance SW degradation. Large diameter and spacing of tubes are favorable to improve the AZR at the top of the landfill, and the aerobic zone mainly exists near the ventilation tubes. These findings contribute to the development of more efficient and sustainable solid waste treatment strategies in semi-aerobic landfill.

Abstract:With comparison of a traditional landfill, a joint recirculation of concentrated leachate and leachate to landfills with or without a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment was investigated in this study. The results showed that the joint recirculation of concentrated leachate and leachate with a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment could not only utilize the microaerobic reactor to buffer the fluctuation of quality and quantity of leachate during landfill stabilization, but also reduce the inhibitory effect of acidic pH and high concentrations of ammonium in recycled liquid on microorganisms and accelerate the degradation of landfilled waste. After 390 days of operation, the discharge of COD and total nitrogen (TN) from the landfill with leachate pretreatment by a microaerobic reactor was 7.4 and 0.9 g, respectively, which accounted for 0.7% and 2.6% of COD, 1.9% and 7.5% of the TN discharge from the landfills without recirculation and directly recirculated with leachate and concentrated leachate, respectively. The degradation of the organic matter and biodegradable matter (BDM) in the landfill reactors could fit well with the first-order kinetics. The highest degradation of the organic matter and BDM was observed in the joint recirculation system with a microaerobic reactor for leachate treatment with the degradation constant of the first-order kinetics of 0.001 and 0.002.

Abstract:Semi-aerobic method is a standard type of landfill currently used in Japan. Semi-aerobic landfill system enables to enhance the stabilization of landfilled solid waste utilizing the self-purification capacity inherent in nature. Although semi-aerobic method has been developed for about 20 years, the mechanism has not widely understood in many countries.The objective of this study is to make clear the influence of the laying condition (pipe diameter, pipe placement distance) of leachate collection pipe on the stabilization of landfill through numerical simulation, by use of landfill model constructed in this study with consideration of the interactions of microbial activity and the transport process such as gas transport, heat transport and material transfer between gas and liquid phases.

Abstract:Landfills are important emission sources of atmospheric N2O, especially bioreactor landfills with leachate recirculation. In this study, N2O emissions were characterized in four bioreactor landfills with different ventilation methods, including intermittent (2-h aeration per 12 h or 4 h/d in continuous) and continuous aeration (20 h/d), in comparison to a traditional landfill without aeration. During the experiment, the N2O emissions from the landfill reactors with intermittent aeration were 7.48 and 7.15 mg, accounting for only 20.8% and 19.9% of those with continuous aeration, respectively. Continuous aeration was more favorable for the biodegradation of organic matter than intermittent aeration in the landfilled waste and leachate. Intermittent and continuous aeration could both effectively remove total nitrogen (TN) and NH4+-N with removal efficiencies above 64% in the leachate. In the experimental landfill reactors with gas-water joint regulation, the proportion of N2O-N to TN loss ranged from 0.02% to 0.75%. Luteimonas, Pseudomonas, Thauera, Pusillimonas and Comamonas were the dominant denitrifying bacteria in the landfill reactors. The denitrifying bacterial community in the landfilled waste was closely related to its degree of stabilization and nitrogenous compound concentrations in the landfilled waste and leachate. The NO3--N and NO2--N concentrations of leachate were the most important environmental factors affecting the succession of nirS-type and nirK-type denitrifying microbial communities in the landfilled waste. These findings indicated that intermittent aeration was an economical and effective way to accelerate the stabilization of landfilled waste and reduce the pollutants in leachate and N2O emissions during landfill mining and reclamation.

Abstract:Aeration is an effective in situ remediation technique to accelerate the stabilization process and reduce the odor’s concentration of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills. The distribution of oxygen in a landfill is crucial to the effective operation and performance of a landfill aeration project. In this study, field-scale tests of air injection via vertical wells were conducted at an MSW landfill in Shanghai, China. The spatial and temporal distributions of oxygen during single- and multiple-well injections were measured and compared. The results showed that the methane volume fraction decreased from 60% to less than 10%, and the oxygen volume fraction increased to approximately 15% only after 2 h of air injection. The rapid change in gas concentration over time could potentially be attributed to the preferential flow that occurred in the heterogeneous MSW. Further, a dual-porosity model was proposed to simulate the rapid advection and diffusion of air in the macropores, thus reflecting the fast increase in the oxygen concentration in the total pore space. During multiple-well injection, a “competitive injection” phenomenon was observed; specifically, the air injection volume of different vertical wells greatly varied even under the same injection pressure due to the large difference in the gas permeability of waste in different areas, and different degrees of aerobic degradation of waste would occur in different areas. Electrical resistivity tomography images showed that only part of the leachate was driven away by the air, leading to an uneven increase in waste resistivity.

Effects of landfill void fraction and moisture content on the formation of aerobic areas in a semi-aerobic bioreactor

Abstract:The main disposal method for municipal solid waste (MSW), including the growing worldwide volumes of kitchen waste, involves transport to landfills. Because kitchen waste is mainly composed of organic matter and has a high moisture content, large amounts of leachate and landfill gas are generated when it is sent to landfills. Therefore, rapid waste stabilization is essential. In this study, four semi-aerobic bioreactors (named NS, SS, MS, and LS) were established with void fractions of 33.76%, 39.84%, 44.62%, and 41.31%, respectively. The results showed that the void fractions of landfill directly affected the gas flow path. When the landfill void fraction was small (e.g., NS), most airflow traveled directly through the pipeline and minimal airflow entered the waste layer. When the landfill void fraction was large (e.g., MS), air easily entered the waste layer and some air flowed into the gas vent with the landfill gas. As the reaction proceeded, the void fraction gradually decreased due to gravity-induced sedimentation. During the water addition experiment, the voids were occupied by water, leading to formation of an anaerobic area. Among the four bioreactors, only MS had negligible formation of an anaerobic zone in the center. Methane (CH4) generation was detected only at the connection between the gas vent and the leachate collection pipe. A larger void fraction led to formation of a smaller anaerobic zone. The ratio of air flowing in pipeline was lowest in MS. These results indicated that a large void fraction promotes the decomposition of organic matter.

Abstract:Different strains of mice immunized with lactic dehydrogenase B (LDHB) can be classified into high and low responders. Breeding experiments suggest regulation of this immune response by a dominant gene (Ir‐LDHB), which is linked to the major histocompatibility complex (H‐2). Studies in recombinant inbred mice made it possible to map Ir‐LDHB within the H‐2 complex between Ir‐1 and Ss‐Slp. The argument that it is a single gene or only a small gene cluster which regulates immune responsiveness to the multideterminant enzyme molecule is strengthened by our finding of only two levels of responsiveness among a variety of inbred mouse strains.

Abstract:To control the landfill gas (LFG) emission, LFG collection systems with vertical wells are extensively used in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills. When investigating the LFG flow behavior, the solid–liquid–gas interactions cannot be neglected, especially in bioreactor landfills. In this study, an axisymmetric numerical model incorporating MSW compression and leachate recirculation was developed to describe the transient gas flow in bioreactor landfills. In the model, the porosity distribution was evaluated through circular computations, and the temporal and spatial changes in moisture were determined using the unsaturated–saturated seepage flow model. Based on these calculations, the governing equations of gas migration were solved using the finite element method. The influences of MSW properties, recirculation rate and well vacuum pressure were then investigated. The results show that the MSW compression and leachate recirculation have a significant impact on the distributions of gas generation, permeability and pressure. As the recirculation rate increases from 1 to 9 mm day−1, the gas permeability can decrease about 1 order of magnitude and thus the radius of influence decreases from 39 to 31 m. It is important to keep a balance between the acceleration of landfill stability and the recovery efficiency of LFG. These results provide helpful guidelines for the design of leachate recirculation and LFG control systems.
Investigation of Preferential Flow and Leakage Location in Landfill: A Field Tracer Test and Numerical Analysis

Abstract:A field tracer test was carried out in an uncontrolled valley-type landfill. Fluorobenzoic acid (FBA) was firstly used in the landfill to study the preferential flow. A two-dimensional advection-diffusion dual-porosity model coupled with indirect streamline and terrain conditions was developed to analyze the breakthrough curves. The leakage location method was proposed based on the volume proportion of fracture domain in the total domain wf distribution. The results show that FBA is an excellent tracer due to its lower dosage, high peak concentration and long residence time at monitoring wells. The tracer transport depth and length can reach up to 15 m and 86.3 m, respectively. Diffusion drive the tracer flow to upstream with high velocity. The anisotropy value is mainly influenced by the effect of compression rather than the waste age. The horizontal preferential flows dominate in the landfill. The preferential flow is observed to be more obvious with the increasement of the depth due to the increasement of the content of 2D particles. The leakage probability of different part in the landfill is determined by the proposed dual-porosity model and leakage location method. The proposed leakage detection method can be used for active landfills, especially those with thick layers of wastes. It can also provide scientific guidance for the design of subsequent vertical barrier for the landfills.
Field Investigation of Temporal Variation of Volatile Organic Compounds at a Landfill in Hangzhou, China

Abstract:Variation of volatile organic compound (VOC) concentration and composition in an active landfill were monitored by a developed static chamber for 2 years. The landfill gas from 82 sampling points including 70 points on working face, 8 points on geomembrane (GMB), and 4 points on final cover were analyzed for VOCs by GC-MS. Twenty-eight types of VOCs were detected, including terpenes, sulfur compounds, aromatics, hydrocarbon, oxygenated compounds, aldehyde compounds, and halogenated compounds. Terpenes were the dominant VOCs recorded in the spring, autumn, and winter seasons, whereas sulfur compounds dominated in the summer season. Limonene, ethyl alcohol, and acetone were identified as the main VOCs emitted from the waste working face of the landfill. Limonene dominated the terpenes with a maximum concentration of 43.29 μg m−3 in the autumn season. Limonene was also the dominant VOC escaping from the defects of geomembrane temporary cover reaching an average concentration 38 μg m−3. The defects of geomembranes can be a great emission source of VOCs. Emission rate of limonene was 2.24 times higher than that on the working face. VOC concentrations on the final cover can be 166 times less than those obtained on the working face. VOC emitted from the landfill did not represent a health threat for human health. However, concentrations of methyl mercaptan and ethanethiol on the working face were 3.4–22.8 times greater than their odor threshold, which were the main compounds responsible for odor nuisance. Results obtained from CALPUFF model indicated that methyl mercaptan and ethanethiol would not be a nuisance for the residents around the landfill. However, these compounds are harmful to the workers on the landfill.
Numerical Analysis of Moisture and Gas Transport in Earthen Final Covers Considering Effects of Vapor and Temperature Gradient

Abstract:Biochemical decomposition of high kitchen wastes in landfills in China results in (i) a high content of vapor in landfill gas (LFG) and (ii) a noticeable temperature gradient across the earthen final cover (EFC). Yet, it is unclear how vapor and temperature gradients affect moisture and gas transport through EFC and microbial aerobic methane oxidation (MAMO). A theoretical model of moisture-gas-heat reactive transport considering MAMO and effects of vapor flow and temperature gradients was developed, and a series of parametric studies were included. The model was verified by published test results. The parametric simulation results show that vapor from landfill wastes can replenish water to EFCs in dry seasons, which results in (i) the relief of water shortage of vegetation and MAMO and (ii) LFG emission reduction. Effects of vapor inflow become more significant under larger temperature gradient. In cold seasons, temperature gradients can promote MAMO to reduce methane emissions, and enhance evaporation to reduce percolation. When evaporation rate at the surface exceeds 30 times vapor influx, vapor inflow has negligible effects on moisture and gas transport in EFCs. Neglecting effects of vapor and temperature gradient can lead to misjudgments on anti-seepage performance and methane emission reduction performance of EFCs.

Abstract:The microbial community of the landfill undergoing aerobic stabilization process by aeration engineering was investigated. The municipal solid wastes (MSWs) were sampled from two aeration well sites with different landfill temperatures (65.5°C and 41.7°C) under higher and lower stabilization level. The physical component, chemical property, and microbial population of MSWs were analyzed and compared. The result showed that the phylum Firmicutes was dominant in the aerobic landfill; and the genus Weissella and Syntrophaceticus were more abundant in high, and low temperature site, respectively. The bacterial distribution showed difference on two temperature sites and four landfill depths, mainly affected by the ammonia-nitrogen and moisture content of MSWs. The ecological profiles of the microorganisms responded the aeration engineering were predicted. The anaerobic hydrolytic and acetogenic microorganisms were decreased in abundance, while the facultative Lactobacillus increased when the landfill under a higher stabilization level. The function abundances of methane oxidation, sulfide oxidation, and aerobic chemoheterotrophy were enriched by aeration engineering, which was the microbial mechanism for accelerating the stabilization process of landfill.

A Bio-Hydro-chemical Model for Gas Pressure Development in Municipal Solid Waste Landfills

Abstract:Prediction of gas pressure development within municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills is of great importance for the stability analysis and design of gas collection systems. This study presents a fully coupled bio-hydro-chemical model for the gas pressure development in landfills. The reduction of foam on the relative gas permeability and the variation of the intrinsic permeability with degradation degree are considered. The source terms in the governing equations of two-phase flow and solute transport are chosen from the biodegradation process of MSW. Both one-step landfilling and multi-step landfilling are calculated to compare the differences. It is found that the fast hydrolysis of fresh MSW produces most of the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and leachate within the first 2 months. During multi-step landfilling, the VFA and leachate produced from fresh MSW in the top flow downward to the bottom, leading to high gas production and high leachate saturation in the deep. Meanwhile, the high concentration of VFA reduces the surface tension of the leachate, enabling it to generate foam and further reduce gas permeability. Owing to the high gas production and low gas permeability, the excess gas pressure is easily developed in the deep layer. The maximum gas pressure of multi-step landfilling is about 2·5 times that of one-step landfilling. Case studies of the laboratory column test and in situ borehole test verify the accuracy of the model in predicting the temporal and spatial distribution of gas pressure. For the slope failure induced by high gas pressure, the evolution of shear strength and stability during a 2 year landfilling period is calculated and discussed.

Abstract:Oxygen （O2） content is a key factor for methane oxidation in landfill cover layer.In this study,a breathing landfill biocover technique was proposed.A passive air venting system based on aerothermodynamics was constructed as the key component of the breathing biocover system,and its air/O2 supply efficiency was optimized.The result showed that the air velocity in venting pipe has a linear relationship with the temperature discrepancy （V=0.0281ΔT-0.5258）.The air velocity in the venting pipe can be further improved by increasing the length of the vertical venting pipe and diameter of horizontal inlet pipes.The highest velocity （2.0 m·s-1） was achieved at the temperature discrepancy of 35 ℃ and with a 2.5 m vertical venting pipe.When the passive air venting system was introduced into a simulated landfill cover reactor,it significantly improved the level and distribution of O2 in 40 cm cover layers as the data showed that the average O2 content in every layer kept more than 20%,while that was 15.7% in the control trail.The study proved that this novel breathing biocover can be applied as an effective way for greenhouse gas emission control in landfill by enhancing biodegradation of methane in landfill gas.

Abstract:Nitrogen removal and refuse stabilization were investigated in the bioreactor landfills with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse or an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation.The results showed that the decrease in leachate NH_4~+-N concentration in the bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse was slower than that with an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation,but the theoretical energy consumption of the former was about 98% lower than the latter.The infrastructure investment of aerobic nitrifying reactor and disposal of sludge were no longer indispensable.The way of intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse accelerated the degsadation of waste and organic matter in leachate,increased the degree of waste stabilization and enhanced the subsidence by 10%-12%.However,an aerobic reactor using treated leachate recirculation would bring about a shortage of carbon source at later stage of refuse decomposition,which resulted in slower waste stabilization.Because of the organic matter consumption of denitrifiaction process and the metabolic activity of aerobes,leachate maximal COD_(Cr) and VFA concentrations in the bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse ammounted to only 50% of the control,and the gas production from the methanogenic reactor reduced by 42%-44%.

Abstract:This paper developed a two-dimensional axisymmetric analytical model for layered landfills with vertical wells. The model uses a horizontal layered structure to describe the waste non-homogeneity with depth in gas generation, permeability and temperature. The governing equations in the cylindrical coordinate system were transformed to dimensionless forms and solved using a method of eigenfunction expansion. After verification, the effects of different well boundary conditions and gas extraction systems on recovery efficiency were investigated. A dimensionless double-layer system, consisting of a cover and a waste layer, was also explored. The results show that a constant vacuum pressure boundary condition can be enough to describe a perforated pipe surrounded by drainage gravel with a reasonable value of well radius, such as half the radius of gravel fill. Also, the 7 independent variables (one marked with an asterisk is dimensionless) of a double-layer system can be integrated into 3 dimensionless ones: Cover permeability K-v1(*)/(Vertical gas permeability of waste K-v2(*) x Cover thickness h(1)(*)) - Vacuum pressure P-w x PatmKv2*/(mu RgT2 x Gas generation rate of waste s(2)) and ln(Well radius r(w)(*))/(Anisotropy degree of waste Id). The integration is based on the inherent mechanism of this flow system with certain simplification. The effects of these variables are then quantitatively characterized for a better understanding of gas recovery efficiency. Same recovery efficiency can be achieved with different variable combinations. For example, increasing h(1)(*)(such as doubling it) has the same effect with decreasing K-v1(*)(such as halving it). Along with the reduction of variables by half, the integration can facilitate the preliminary design, and is a small but important advance in the consideration of MSW non-homogeneity. Abstract:Methane emissions through landfill cover is a complicated multi-physics coupled process, including water-gas-heat transfer and microbial aerobic methane oxidation (MAMO). Due to the relatively high water content of municipal wastes in China, landfill gas generally contains a substantial amount of water vapor. Moreover, the biochemical decomposition of wastes underneath landfill cover results in noticeable temperature gradient across the cover. Nevertheless, effects of water vapor and temperature gradient on water and gas distributions in landfill cover are not clear. A new theoretical model of water-gas-heat reactive transfer and MAMO in unsaturated soils was developed by incorporating vapor flow and effects of temperature gradient on water and gas transfer. The newly proposed model was implemented in a finite-element software COMSOL. The model was verified by (i) a published soil column test simulating MAMO; and (ii) a soil column test subject to heating. The model is capable of describing liquid water-vapor transfer, multi-component gas transfer (e.g., CH4, CO2, N2 and O2), heat transfer and MAMO. The theoretical model and the related numerical code could serve as a useful tool for landfill cover design for mitigating methane emissions.

Abstract:The recovery and emission of landfill gas (LFG) is an important topic in landfill management. To produce an effective engineering design for an LFG collection system, designers must understand the migration of gas from the waste body to horizontal extraction wells. This paper develops a two-dimensional analytical solution to enable the study of the gas pressure distribution, well pressure and recovery efficiency in layered landfills with horizontal wells. A horizontal layered structure is used to accommodate the non-homogeneity of various municipal solid waste (MSW) aspects with respect to depth, including gas generation, permeability and temperature. The governing equations, subject to boundary and continuity conditions, are solved by using separation of variables and double finite integral transforms. The solution was verified against another analytical solution and a numerical simulation. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis of single-well model parameters is performed to optimize a double-well system. The results show that a landfill with horizontal collection systems cannot be assumed to be one dimensional with increasing well spacing. Additionally, both the operational vacuum and maximum gas pressure can be reduced through the design of a double- or multiple-well system. Therefore, the proposed solution can be used for the verification of more complex models and the preliminary design of a horizontal well system.
