Abstract:This study attempts to find better ways to remediate chromium contamination in groundwater and the associated public health hazard.Permeable reactive barrier(PRB) is the most widely used technology to remediate groundwater contaminated with hexavalent chromium.Zero valent iron and zeolite are the two reactive materials most commonly used in PRBs.Zero valent iron reduces hexavalent chromium into trivalent chromium but the cost to deploy zeron valent iron PRB is high.The cost of zeolite is relative low.However,hexavalent adsorbed by zeolite may be desorbed after long time operation.The objective of this study was to develop a composite material that combines both zero valent iron and zeolite to avoid the disadvantages of the two materials.The study involved three steps:1) to select a zeolite with the best sorption efficiency;2) to determine the optimal concentration of the surfactant to modify zeolite;3) to identify the optimal process to prepare a composite material using zeolite and zero valent iron.Mixing clinoptilolite,CTAB-Br,zero-valent iron,clinoptilolite powder and ultrapure water at certain proportion and then heating the mixture to 90℃ was found to be the optimal procedure.The resultant composite material had the advantages of high reactivity,easy to pack,and low cost.Thus,it was suitable for PRB application to remediate groundwater contaminated with hexavalent chromium.

Abstract:Recent industrial and urban activities have led to elevated concentrations of a wide range of contaminants in groundwater and wastewater, which affect the health of millions of people worldwide. In recent years, the use of zero-valent iron (ZVI) for the treatment of toxic contaminants in groundwater and wastewater has received wide attention and encouraging treatment efficiencies have been documented. This paper gives an overview of the recent advances of ZVI and progress obtained during the groundwater remediation and wastewater treatment utilizing ZVI (including nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)) for the removal of: (a) chlorinated organic compounds, (b) nitroaromatic compounds, (c) arsenic, (d) heavy metals, (e) nitrate, (f) dyes, and (g) phenol. Reaction mechanisms and removal efficiencies were studied and evaluated. It was found that ZVI materials with wide availability have appreciable removal efficiency for several types of contaminants. Concerning ZVI for future research, some suggestions are proposed and conclusions have been drawn.

Abstract:Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers pose potential threats to the environment and to public health due to their persistence and high toxicity. In this study, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) coupled with microbial degradation by indigenous microorganisms with and without biostimulation was employed to remediate soils highly polluted with HCH. The degradation efficiency of total HCHs in both the "nZVI-only" and "Non-amendment" treatments was approximately 50 %, while in the treatment amended with nZVI and acetate, 85 % of total HCHs was removed. Addition of nZVI and acetate resulted in enrichment of anaerobic microorganisms. The results of quantitative PCR (qPCR) and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed that Desulfotomaculum, Dehalobacter, Geobacter, and Desulfuromonas likely contributed to the depletion of HCH isomers. Moreover, some abiotic factors also favored this removal process, including pH, and the generation of iron sulfides as revealed by the result of Mössbauer spectrometer analysis. Our research provides an improved remediation strategy for soils polluted with HCH isomers and an understanding of the synergistic effect of nZVI and indigenous microorganisms.

Abstract:Carbon emission is one of the main causes of global climate change, thus it is necessary to choose a low-carbon method in the contaminated soil remediation. This paper studies the adsorption ability of ZVI on Pb(II) contaminated soils under different working conditions. The removal efficiency of Pb(II) was 98% because of the suitable ZVI dosage, log reaction time and low initial solution concentration. The whole balancing process was much fast according to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isothermal model. Moreover, sequential extraction procedure (SEP) showed Pb(II) was transformed from Fe/Mn oxides-bound form to residual form in Pb(II) contaminated soils. From scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results, it was confirmed that zero-valent iron (ZVI) stabilizes Pb(II) pollutants mostly through the combination of chemical adsorption and physical adsorption. The economic and carbon emission assessments were used to compare the cost and carbon emissions of different methods. The results show that ZVI adsorption has excellent economic benefits and low carbon emission.

Intrathecal saline, the mu opioid agonist [D-Ala2, MePhe4, Gly5-ol] enkephalin (DAGO) and delta opioid agonist [D-Pen2, D-Pen5] enkephalin (DPDPE) had no significant effects on systemic blood pressure and heart rate values. 2. The kappa opioid agonist bremazocine however, caused falls in blood pressure and reduction in heart rate. 3. Intrathecal administration of saline, DPDPE and bremazocine had no effect on baroreflex sensitivity. 4. Intrathecal administration of DAGO caused a reduction in baroreflex sensitivity; this effect was inhibited by naloxone and abolished after atenolol. 5. Abstract:Hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in e-waste disposal sites are difficult to remove effectively. There is little reported about zero valent iron (ZVI) coupled with persulfate (PS) to achieve the removal of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) from soil. In this work, we have prepared the flake submicron zero valent iron by ball milling with boric acid (B-mZVIbm) at a low cost. Sacrifice experiments results showed that 56.6% of BDE209 was removed in 72 h with PS/B-mZVIbm, which was 2.12 times than that of micron zero valent iron (mZVI). The morphology, crystal form, atomic valence, composition, and functional group of B-mZVIbm were determined by SEM, XRD, XPS, and FTIR, and the results indicated that the oxide layer on the surface of mZVI is replaced by borides. The results of EPR indicated that hydroxyl radical and sulfate radical played the dominant role in the degradation of BDE209. The degradation products of BDE209 were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), accordingly, the possible degradation pathway was further proposed. The research suggested that ball milling with mZVI and boric acid is a low-cost means of preparing highly active zero valent iron materials. And the mZVIbm has promising applications in improving the activation efficiency of PS and enhancing the removal of the contaminant.

Abstract:Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) acting as a high-cost disposable material in soil Cr(VI) remediation faces significant challenges due to its easily oxidizable nature and biological toxicity. In addressing this issue, the present study undertook the synthesis of a series of modified nZVI and combined the selected material with Cr(VI)-resistant filamentous fungus Penicillium oxalicum SL2 for real-site chromium pollution remediation. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that the inclusion of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of nZVI for Cr(VI) by 19.3% (from 73.25 to 87.4 mg/L), surpassing both biochar (37.42 mg/L) and bentonite modified nZVI (48.03 mg/L). Characterization results validated the successful synthesis of the nano composite material. Besides, oxidative stress analysis explained the unique detoxification effects of CMC on SL2, acting as a free radical scavenger and isolating layer. In real-sites soil remediation experiments, a low dosage (0.4% w/w) of nZVI/CMC@SL2 (CMC modified nZVI combined with SL2) exhibited an impressive reduction of over 99.5% in TCLP-Cr(VI) and completely transformed 18% of unstable Cr to stable forms. Notably, nZVI/CMC demonstrated its capability to facilitate SL2 colonization in highly contaminated soil and modulate the microbial community structure, enriching chromium-removing microorganisms. In summary, the synergistic system of nZVI/CMC@SL2 merges as a cost-effective and efficient approach for Cr(VI) reduction, providing meaningful insights for its application in the remediating contaminated site soils.
In situ testing of metallic iron nanoparticle mobility and reactivity in a shallow granular aquifer

Abstract:This paper describes the results of a series of single well push-pull tests conducted to evaluate the in situ transport of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) stabilized nanoscale zero-valent iron (ZVI) particles in saturated sediments and their reactivity toward chlorinated ethenes. CMC-stabilized nanoscale ZVI particles were synthesized on site by reducing ferrous ions with borohydride in water in the presence of CMC. Nanoscale ZVI and bimetallic ZVI-Pd nanoparticle suspensions were prepared and injected into depth-discrete aquifer zones during three push-pull tests. The injected nanoparticle suspensions contained a conservative tracer (Br(-)) and were allowed to reside in the aquifer pore space for various time periods prior to recovery by groundwater extraction. The comparison between Br(-) and Fe concentrations in extracted groundwater samples indicated that the CMC-stabilized nanoscale ZVI particles were mobile in the aquifer but appeared to lose mobility with time, likely due to the interactions between particles and aquifer sediments. After 13 h in the aquifer, the nanoscale ZVI particles became essentially immobilized. During the push-pull test with injection of Fe-Pd nanoparticles, ethane concentrations increased from non-detectable to 65 microg/L in extracted groundwater within less than 2 h of reaction time, indicating the rapid abiotic degradation of chlorinated ethenes. The amount of total chlorinated ethene mass destroyed was low presumably because the injected solutions "pushed" the dissolved chlorinated ethenes away from the injection well, without substantial mixing, and because stationary (sorbed) chlorinated ethene mass on the aquifer sediments was low. In situ remediation programs using highly reactive metallic nanoparticles should incorporate delivery methods that maintain high groundwater pore velocities during injection to increase advective transport distances (e.g. groundwater circulation wells). Also, source zones with abundant stationary contaminant mass that is accessible by advective transport should be targeted for remediation with the nanoparticles, as opposed to portions of dissolved plumes, in order to maximize the in situ destruction of contaminants.

Abstract:Coupling microscale zero-valent iron (mZVI) and autotrophic hydrogen bacteria (AHB) has gained increasing attention owing to its potential to improve dechlorination performance by bridging H2 donors and acceptors. However, few studies have attempted to test its sustainable remediation performance and to comprehensively unveil the governing mechanisms. This study systematically compared the performances of different systems (mZVI, H2-AHB, and mZVI-AHB) for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal, and further optimized dechlorination and H2 evolution of mZVI-AHB synchronously by regulating the mZVI particle size and dosage to achieve a win-win remediation solution. The final removal efficiency and removal rate of TCE by mZVI-AHB were 1.67-fold and 5.30-fold of those by mZVI alone respectively, and mZVI-AHB resulted in more complete dechlorination than H2-AHB alone. Combining H2 evolution kinetics, material characterization data, and bacterial community analysis results, the improved dechlorination performance of mZVI-AHB was mainly due to the following mechanisms: H2 generated by mZVI corrosion was efficiently utilized by AHB, lasting corrosion of mZVI was facilitated by AHB, and dechlorination functional bacteria were highly enriched by mZVI. Finally, the remediation performance of mZVI-AHB with different mZVI particle sizes and dosages was evaluated comprehensively in terms of dechlorination reactivity, H2 utilization efficiency and chemical cost, and suggestions for possible engineering applications are provided.

Abstract:Abstract Zero-valent iron has been used for more than 130 years for water treatment. It is based on redox reactions as well as on sorption to the corrosion products of iron. It is successfully applied for the removal of metals and organic pollutants from groundwater and wastewater. There are different variations how zero-valent iron can be used, especially (i) permeable reactive barriers, (ii) fluidized bed reactors and (iii) nanoscale zero-valent iron. Permeable reactive barriers are used for in situ treatment of groundwater in trench-like constructions or in a funnel and gate system. Their advantages are low maintenance cost, inexpensive construction and prevention of excavation wastes, and their disadvantages are surface passivation and clogging of pores by corrosion products. Zero-valent iron nanoparticles are injected directly in contaminated soil or groundwater. Their advantages are a higher reactivity than coarse-grained zero-valent iron and their mobility in the subsurface to reach the contaminated areas. However, they also have some major disadvantages like fast ageing in the system, phytotoxicity, agglomeration during migration and high costs. The latest development is a fluidized bed process (“ferrodecont process”) which avoids the passivation and clogging observed in permeable reactive barriers as well as the high costs and toxicity issues of nanoscale zero-valent iron. First results of this technology for Cr(VI) and organically contaminated groundwaters and metal removal from industrial wastewaters are highly promising.

Abstract:Nanoscale zero-valent irons (nZVIs) are easy to agglomerate and deactivate, which limited the practical applications in the subsurface for in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater due to poor radius of influence. Here, we utilized the dual support effect of coupling surface-modified carbon black with a surfactant (carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)) to manipulate the charge, electron, and geometric structure of the interface, the obtained Fe/CB/CMC (wt%=1:1:2) and Fe/CB/SDS (wt%=1:2:1) suspensions exhibited superior removal capacity toward As(III) with capacities of 80.7 and 90.7 mg g -1 , respectively. In a clay medium, 25.2% and 18.0% of nZVIs in Fe/CB/CMC-1:1:2 and Fe/CB/SDS-1:2:1 can break through the column while approximately 100% are retained in bare nZVIs under the same conditions. In addition, input velocity and ionic strength demonstrate a positive correlation with the retention of nZVIs in the Fe/CB/CMC-112 and a slight impact on the deposition of nZVIs in the Fe/CB/SDS-121 due to the rheology and charge differences between CMC and SDS. This study demonstrates the feasibility of combining anionic surfactants and carbon supports to enhance the reactivity and mobility of nZVIs for in situ remediation.

Abstract:Chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHs) pose significant health risks due to their suspected carcinogenicity, necessitating urgent remediation efforts. While the combination of zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) and microbial action shows promise in mitigating CH contamination, field studies on this approach are scarce. We devised a novel three-layer permeable reactive barrier (PRB) material incorporating Fe 0 and coconut shell biochar, effectively implemented at a typical CH-contaminated site. Field monitoring data revealed conducive conditions for reductive dechlorination of CHs, characterized by low oxygen levels and a relatively neutral pH in the groundwater. The engineered PRB material consistently released organic carbon and iron, fostering the proliferation of CH-dechlorinating bacteria. Over a 250-day operational period, the pilot-scale PRB demonstrated remarkable efficacy in CH removal, achieving removal efficiencies ranging from 21.9% to 99.6% for various CH compounds. Initially, CHs were predominantly eliminated through adsorption and iron-mediated reductive dechlorination. However, microbial reductive dechlorination emerged as the predominant mechanism for sustained and long-term CHs removal. These findings underscore the economic viability and effectiveness of our approach in treating CH-contaminated groundwater, offering promising prospects for broader application in environmental remediation efforts.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Montmorillonite Supported Zero Valent Iron For Transformation Of Nitroaromatic In Groundwater

Abstract:In this study montmorillonite was utilized as matrix to synthesize nanosize and sub-nanosize zero valent iron (ZVI), which was applied to degrade organic and inorganic contaminant in groundwater. The synthesized clay supported ZVI has been characterized by power X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (X-EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed nanosize (1 similar to 50 nm) ZVI particles were formed on the external surface and sub-nanosize (around 0.5 nm) ZVI cluster resided in the interlayers surface of montmorillonite. After reduction by borohydride, the layered structures of montmorillonite are less evident, and the clay platelets in general appear less stacking, but the basically structure still maintained. This kind of montmorillonite supported ZVI exhibit higher reactivity and efficiency compared to other previously reported forms of ZVI as indicated by the reduction of nitroaromatic. Over 90% of nitrobenzene (0.65 mM) was degraded within one minute and aniline was the final product, and One-electron reduction potentials of NACs is an crucial parameter for reduction of a series of NACs in a given system.
Preparation and application of Zero Valent Iron immobilized in Activated Carbon for removal of hexavalent Chromium from synthetic effluent

Abstract:Unlike organic contaminants, heavy metals are not biodegradable and tend to accumulate in living organisms; they are also recognized for being toxic or carcinogenic. The use of nanoparticles of zero-valent iron (nZVI) is reported as an alternative technique with high potential for in situ and ex situ remediation of contaminated matrices with this metal, mainly due to its large active surface area and significant adsorption capacity to consolidate into a simple and efficient method of treatment. In this study, ZVI particles were synthesized by the chemical reduction method using hydrated ferrous sulfate (FeSO4.7H2O) and sodium borohydride (NaBH4) with subsequent aggregation to powdered activated carbon (PAC), forming the adsorbent PAC-ZVI, which was characterized by the techniques of XRD and SEM, which revealed the integration of the catalyst to the activated carbon matrix. Finally, developed kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption kinetics was better adapted to a pseudo second order model, the isotherms were better represented by the Freundlich model and the thermodynamic results showed that the adsorption reaction occurred through a spontaneous process with endothermic interaction between Cr (VI) and PAC-ZVI with increase in the randomness of the system.
Achieving sustainable trichloroethylene removal from nitrate-containing groundwater: Effects of particle size and dosage of microscale zero-valent iron on its synergistic action with anaerobic bacteria

Abstract:The coupling of microscale zero-valent iron (mZVI) and anaerobic bacteria (AB) has gained increasing attention due to its ability to enhance dechlorination efficiency by combining the advantages of chemical and microbial reduction. However, the implementation of these coupling technologies at the field scale is challenging in terms of sustainability goals due to the coexistence of various natural electron acceptors in groundwater, which leads to limited electron selectivity and increased secondary risk. Therefore, this study used trichloroethylene (TCE) as a probe contaminant and nitrate (NO3-) as a typical co-occurring natural electron acceptor to optimize the overall sustainable remediation performance of an mZVI/AB coupled system by adjusting the mZVI particle size and dosage. Results revealed that mZVI particles of different sizes exhibit different microorganism activation capabilities. In contrast to its 2 μm and 7 μm counterparts, the 30 μm mZVI/AB system demonstrated a strong dosage-dependency in TCE removal and its product selectivity. Finally, multi-criteria analysis (MCA) methods were established to comprehensively rank the alternatives, and 30 μm mZVI (15 g/L dosage) was determined to be the best remediation strategy with the highest total sustainability score under all studied hydro-chemical conditions when equal weights were applied to technical, environmental, and economic indicators. Our work provides a paradigm for comprehensively assessing the sustainable remediation performance of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons polluted groundwater in practical applications.

Abstract:The extensive application of chromium (Cr) in many industries has inevitably resulted in the release of Cr(VI) into the groundwater environment, thus posing damage to the ecosystem and human health. Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been widely studied and applied in the remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated water as an ideal material with high reductive capacity, which enables the transformation of teratogenic and carcinogenic Cr(VI) into less toxic Cr(III). This review comprehensively summarizes the preparation and modification methods of nZVI Cr(VI) removal performance and mechanisms by nZVI and modified nZVI materials. The field applications of nZVI-based materials, such as combining the injection well and the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) to remove Cr(VI) in groundwater, have been reported. Subsequently, the potential toxicity of nZVI-based materials to organisms during environmental application has been highlighted in the current study. Finally, the review outlines potential improvements and explores future directions for the use of nZVI-based materials in groundwater contamination remediation.

Abstract:Zero-valent iron (ZVI) applied to the remediation of contaminated groundwater (GW) in situ, especially using engineered permeable reactive barriers (PRBs), has been proven to be an effective reactive material. However, many of ZVI brands do not represent tailored reagents specifically regarding destroying pollutants in GW. Thus, their reactivity towards certain contaminants in GW may vary significantly in a wide range even with different production batches of the same ZVI brand. This issue has rarely been known and consequently not addressed to a higher extend so far. Therefore, this study implemented extensive, long-term column experiments followed by short-term batch experiments for chlorinated volatile organic compounds (cVOCs) degradation for developing a semi-empirical test methodology to thoroughly resolve this pivotal issue by achieving an improved quality assurance guidance regarding proper field-scale emplacement of different ZVI brands and their production batches. The results showed that during column experiments perchloroethylene (PCE) led to a significant degradation up to a certain period but sulfate-reducing microorganisms enhanced the dehalogenation and led approximately to 100 % PCE removal. However, the efficacy varied for different ZVI brands, i.e., Gotthart Maier (GM) and Sponge Iron (Responge®). Furthermore, it could be shown that it might even vary among different production batches of the same ZVI brand. It was also observed that evolution of sulfate-reducing microorganisms may improve the efficacy of PCE degradation vastly that occur at different intensities with different ZVI brands and their respective production batches over time. Further, comparing comprehensive long-term column (k obs = 0.0488 1/h) and short-term batch experiments (k obs = 0.07794 1/h) as well as refined kinetic analyses (k obs = 0.0424 1/h) clearly prove that an appropriate guidance protocol for successful full-scale in situ remediation is required for properly select the right ZVI brand and production batch before it is loaded to a PRB in the field.

Abstract:The utilization of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) in polybrominated diphenyl ethers remediation has been studied extensively. However, challenges in balancing cost and reactivity have been encountered. A submicron zero-valent iron coated with FeC 2 O 4 ·2 H 2 O layers (OX-smZVI) was synthesized via a mechanochemical method, aiming to resolve this contradiction. Characterization via SEM, TEM, and XPS confirmed the structure as FeC 2 O 4 ·2 H 2 O coated iron lamellate with a surface area 24-fold higher than ball-milled zero-valent iron (smZVI). XRD highlighted an Fe/C eutectic in OX-smZVI, boosting its electron transfer capacity. Decabromodiphenyl ether degradation by OX-smZVI follows a two-stage process, with initial degradation by FeC 2 O 4 ·2 H 2 O and a subsequent phase dominated by electron transfer. OX-smZVI exhibits a 4.52–34.40 times faster BDE209 removal rate than nZVI and scaled-up OX-smZVI displayed superior reactivity with preparation costs only 1/680 of nZVI. Given its enhanced reactivity and cost-efficiency, OX-smZVI emerges as a promising replacement for nZVI.

Abstract:Remediation of contaminated groundwater by nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) is widely becoming a leading environmentally friendly solution throughout the globe. Since a wide range of various nZVI-containing materials have been developed for effective remediation, it is necessary to determine an appropriate way to terminate the reactivity of any nZVI-containing material for a practical experimental procedure. In this study, bimetallic Ni/Fe-NPs were prepared to enhance overall reduction kinetics owing to the catalytic reactivity of nickel on the surface of nZVI. We have tested several chemical strategies in order to terminate nZVI reactivity without altering the concentration of volatile compounds in the solution. The strategies include surface passivation in alkaline conditions by addition of carbonate, and consumption of nZVI by a reaction competitor. Four halogenated chemicals, trichloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, atrazine, and 4-chlorophenol, were selected and tested as model groundwater contaminants. Addition of carbonate to passivate the nZVI surface was not effective for trichloroethylene. Nitrate and then bromate were applied to competitively consume nZVI by their faster reduction kinetics. Bromate proved to be more effective than nitrate, subsequently terminating nZVI reactivity for all four of the tested halogenated compounds. Furthermore, the suggested termination method using bromate was successfully applied to obtain trichloroethylene reduction kinetics. Herein, we report the simple and effective method to terminate the reactivity of nZVI by addition of a reducing reactivity competitor.
