Abstract:At present, composite photocatalysts containing MoS2 as a co-catalyst and a subjective semiconductor material are usually obtained via various complex reduction methods using NH4MoS4 or Na2MoO4 as a precursor. In this work, a simple method was proposed to synthesize MoS2-TiO2 composite photocatalysts via mechanochemistry using MoS2 as a direct precursor. 4.0% MoS2-TiO2 after ball-milling at 300 rpm for 2 h possessed the maximum photocatalytic activity for H-2 evolution. The rate of H-2 evolution was up to 150.7 mu mol h(-1), which was 48.6 times higher than that of pure TiO2. The MoS2-TiO2 composite possesses stable photocatalytic performance for H-2 evolution. Photoelectrochemical measurements confirmed the electronic interaction between TiO2 and MoS2. The photo-generated electrons on the conduction band of TiO2 could easily transfer to the MoS2 co-catalyst, which promoted efficient charge separation and improved the photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:A molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheet-decorated titanium dioxide (TiO2) NRA heterojunction composite was fabricated successfully through a two-step hydrothermal approach. Microstructures and optical properties of specimens were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The gaps of the TiO2 nanorods have been filled with tiny MoS2 nanosheets, which can increase the surface area of MoS2/TiO2 NRA composite thin films. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the thin films were measured and discussed in greater detail. The appropriate hydrothermal reaction temperature of MoS2 is important for the growth of perfect MoS2/TiO2 NRA composites with significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance. The photodegradation rate and k value of MoS2-220/TiO2 are 86% and 0.0105 min(-1), respectively, which are much larger than those of blank TiO2. The enhanced photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the higher visible light absorption and the reduced recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been identified as an active non-noble-metal-based cocatalyst for photocatalytic water splitting. Here, a TiO2 nanoplate/amorphous MoS2 quantum dot (a-MoS2) composite was developed via in situ sulfuration of MoO3/TiO2. Due to intimate chemical bonding instead of electrostatic adsorption between TiO2 and MoO3, effective transfer of electrons from TiO2 to a-MoS2 is achieved. Additionally, a-MoS2 with an outstanding electron conveying ability can function as an electron collector and catalytic sites. As a result, the obtained a-MoS2/TiO2 nanocomposite achieved an average yield of H2 up to 371 μmol·g–1·h–1 when the content of the cocatalyst was 1.5 wt %, which is 309 and 79 times those of bare TiO2 and trigonally coordinated MoS2/TiO2, respectively. The highest yield rate of H2 up to 880.3 μmol·g–1·h–1 was obtained over a-MoS2/TiO2. This work may provide a wider perspective on the preparation of a low-cost cocatalyst with high conversion efficiency, to replace other commonly used MoS2-based cocatalysts to solve the energy crisis.

Abstract:TiO2/MoSe2 composite photocatalysts were prepared by a solvothermal method using different MoSe2 loadings on the surface of TiO2 to improve the catalytic activity. Upon increasing the MoSe2 loading, the fluorescence intensity of the catalyst gradually decreased, indicating that the MoSe2 loading increased the utilization of photogenerated carriers in TiO2 and improved the catalytic activity. The formic acid produced by the oxidation of lactic acid and methanol dissociated into oxygen-containing anions that were electrostatically adsorbed on the catalyst surfaces. During photocatalysis, the photogenerated electrons on TiO2 were transferred to MoSe2, which separated the photogenerated electrons and holes and increased the quantum efficiency. Therefore, the hydrogen production rate of the composite catalyst was higher than that of pure TiO2, with a quantum efficiency of about 36.8%.

Abstract:Formation of heterostructure and nanostructure is promising approach to improving the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 based photocatalysts. In this work, MoS2@TiO2@poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared by freeze drying of hydrothermally treated electrospun PMMA nanofibers containing titanium n-butoxide and MoS2 nanosheets. As-prepared nanocomposite revealed a 3D nanofiber network structure with high specific surface (83.6 m2/g), in which MoS2 nanosheets loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles were distributed on the surface of PMMA fibers. MoS2@TiO2@PMMA showed better photocatalytic performance than MoS2@PMMA, TiO2@PMMA, MoS2@TiO2 and MoS2@P25@PMMA towards the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV illumination. Typically, MoS2@TiO2@PMMA (100 mg) could degrade MO (10 mg/L, 100 mL) completely in 40 min under UV irradiation, revealing good photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the nanocomposite could be facilely recovered by filtration, and maintain almost the same photocatalytic activity after cycling tests for ten times, indicating excellent stability and recyclability. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of the nanocomposite might relate to the heterostructure between MoS2 and TiO2 to suppress the recombination of photo-induced charge, and the 3D hierarchical nanoweb structure to afford large specific surface area and high density of active sites.

Abstract:As an emerging two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial, 2D MoSe2 nanosheets has the advantages of wide light response and rapid charge migration ability. In this work, 2D MoSe2/TiO2 nanocomposites were successfully synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method. The microstructure and photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposites were systematically investigated and determined. The corresponding Raman peaks and crystal planes of MoSe2 were analysed by Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy respectively, demonstrating the successful combination of the MoSe2 nanosheets and TiO2 nanoparticles. UV-vis diffused reflectance spectra demonstrated that the introduction of MoSe2 did increase the light absorption ability of the nanocomposites. A lower recombination of electrons and holes was demonstrated for the MoSe2/TiO2 heterojunction from photoluminescence results. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution test showed that the hydrogen production rate was 4.9 mu mol h(-1) for the sample with 0.1 wt.% MoSe2, 2 times higher than that of bare TiO2. A robust novel 0D/2D MoS3 QDs/C-doped atomically thin TiO2(B) nanosheet composite for highly efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution

Abstract:Developing efficient photocatalysts for H2 generation is of huge interest for sources of long-term sustainable energy. Here, a novel 0D/2D MoS3 quantum dots (QDs)/C-doped atomically thin TiO2(B) nanosheet composite (MoS3/TiO2(B)-C) was fabricated for H2 evolution. The simultaneous loading of the highly-efficient cocatalyst MoS3 and carbon and oxygen vacancy co-doping into an atomically thin TiO2(B) nanosheet was achieved by an annealing process. This unique nanostructure of the MoS3/TiO2(B)-C exhibits remarkable photocatalysis of H2 in the full spectrum. We obtain a yield of 2.47 mmol·g−1·h−1, 30 times higher than pure TiO2(B) nanosheet, and even higher than MoS2 and Pt loaded TiO2(B) nanosheets (2.23 and 2.36 mmol·g−1·h−1, respectively). In-depth characterization shows that notably MoS3 is a superior cocatalyst than MoS2 for H2 evolution and stability. We note MoS2 is an earth-abundant robust cocatalyst previously recognized as an ideal substitute for Pt. Importantly, this research work also provides new insights for the design and practical manufacture of low-cost highly efficient H2 generating photocatalysts by ultra-thin 2D materials.

Abstract:The biggest challenging issue in photocatalytic hydrogen production is to efficiently separate the photoinduced electron-hole pairs and requires the enrichment of photoinduced electrons on the surface of photocatalysts. Herein, TiO2 nanosheets (NSs) are in situ grown on highly conductive Ti3C2 MXene and then MoS2 rich in molybdenum vacancies are uniformly distributed on TiO2@Ti3C2 composite through a two-step hydrothermal method. Thus, a unique structure of MoxS@TiO2@Ti3C2 composite with molybdenum vacancies and double co-catalysts (Ti3C2 and MoS2) is achieved. The photocatalytic H2 production rate of MoxS@TiO2@Ti3C2 composite with an optimized hydrothermal treatment temperature (160 °C) is nearly 193 and 6 times higher than that of pure TiO2 NSs and MoS2@TiO2@Ti3C2 composites (160 °C). A large number of active sites with the enhanced specific activity for H2 generation are induced by the introduction of molybdenum vacancies to MoS2 in MoxS@TiO2@Ti3C2 composites. The presence of molybdenum vacancies can suppress carrier recombination, which is beneficial to the reaction. Besides, the presences of Ti3C2 MXene and MoS2 are found to as double co-catalysts to enhance the electronic conductivity, resulting in an increase in efficiency for electron transfer.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has emerged as an efficient, cost-effective, and stable non-noble metal cocatalyst for accelerating photocatalytic hydrogen production and chromium (VI) reduction reactions. To construct heterostructure and create more active sites, this study introduces non-metal heteroatom phosphorous into MoS2 (P-MoS2) through a facile thermal annealing method, depositing on the surface of TiO2 hierarchical microspheres (P-MoS2/TiO2 HM). The photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of P-MoS2/TiO2 HM (1550.30 μmol g-1h-1) surpasses that of TiO2 HM (356.39 μmol g-1h-1) and MoS2/TiO2 HM (645.96 μmol g-1h-1) by 4.36 and 2.40 times, respectively. Moreover, the optimal apparent quantum yield in photocatalytic H2 evolution of P-MoS2/TiO2 HM reaches 7.20% at 350 nm. Furthermore, in the photoreduction performance of Cr (VI), P-MoS2/TiO2 HM exhibited 16.33 and 3.06 times higher photocatalytic activity than TiO2 HM and MoS2/TiO2 HM, respectively. These enhancements can be ascribed to the formation of a heterojunction and the presence of Mo-P catalytic sites. Electron spin resonance spectra and radical scavenging experiments indicated that in situ generated H* plays a crucial role in the photoreduction reactions. Computational results revealed that the generated Mo-P sites effectively lower the reaction energy barrier for H* formation and accelerate the kinetic process of photocatalytic hydrogen production and Cr (VI) reduction. This study presents a promising surface modulation strategy for transitional-metal dichalcogenide-based photocatalysts in both energy and environmental applications.

Abstract:Cubic molybdenum carbide (MoC) as a non-noble cocatalyst has been extensively reported in the area of photocatalytic H 2 generation because of its comparable H + -adsorption ability to noble-metal Pt. However, its relatively low conductivity and insufficient content of hydrogen-evolution active sites lead to a limited H 2 -generation activity of MoC-based photocatalysts. Considering that the introduction of graphene nanosheets and MoS 2 is beneficial to promoting electron transfer and increasing interfacial H 2 -evolution active sites, in this article, MoS 2 -MoC (inner heterophase) was grown on reduced graphene (rGO) as an outer-heterophase support to construct dual-heterophase MoS 2 cocatalyst for the enhanced hydrogen-production performance of TiO 2 . Herein, MoS 2 cocatalysts were first synthesized by controlling a ratio between the materials (GO, (NH 4 ) 6 Mo 7 O 24 and thiourea) during one-step calcination, and further coupled with the TiO 2 to prepare the MoS 2 /TiO 2 via a simple sonication method. The hydrogen-production test indicated that the highest H 2 -production rate of MoS 2 /TiO 2 reached 575 μmol h −1 g −1 (AQE = 1.73%), which was 58, 3.6 and 2.1 times of that for the TiO 2 , /TiO 2 , and MoS 2 @rGO/TiO 2 , respectively. The enhanced performance of MoS 2 /TiO 2 can be ascribed to the dual-heterophase MoS 2 , where the rGO nanosheets accelerate the photoelectron transfer and the MoS 2 increases the number of interfacial hydrogen-evolution active sites. This work provides a viable strategy for exploring effective MoC-modified photocatalysts in the area of photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Abstract:Exposing the highly active facets and hybridizing the photocatalyst with appropriate cocatalysts with right placement have been regarded as a powerful approach to high performance photocatalysts. Herein, TiO2 nanosheets (NSs) are in situ grown on highly conductive Ti3C2 MXene and then MoS2 NSs are deposited on the (101) facets of TiO2 NSs with mainly exposed high-active (001) facets through a two-step hydrothermal method. And a unique 2D-2D-2D structure of Ti3C2@TiO2@MoS2 composite is achieved. With an optimized MoS2 loading amounts (15 wt%), the Ti3C2@TiO2@MoS2 composite shows a remarkable enhancement in the photocatalytic H2 evolution reaction compared with Ti3C2@TiO2 composite and TiO2 NS. It also shows good stability under the reaction condition. This arises from: (i) the in situ growth of TiO2 NSs construct strong interfacial contact with excellent electronic conductivity of Ti3C2, which facilitates the separation of carriers; (ii) the coexposed (101) and (001) facets can form a surface heterojunction within single TiO2 NS, which is beneficial for the transfer and separation of charge carriers; and (iii) the MoS2 NSs are deposited on the electrons-rich (101) facets of TiO2 NSs, which not only effectively reduces the charge carriers recombination rate by capturing photoelectrons, but also makes TiO2 NSs expose more highly active (001) facets to afford high-efficiency photogeneration of electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:Maximumly increasing the number of active sites is crucial to improve the H2-evolution efficiency of cocatalyst. Herein, a rich-active-site regulation strategy by the synergism of unsaturated selenium enrichment and amorphization is developed to precisely construct unsaturated selenium-enriched MoSe2+x amorphous nanoclusters onto the TiO2 via a mild photoinduced co-reduction route by using MoCl5 and dibenzyl diselenide as the precursors. The resulting a-MoSe2+x exposes more unsaturated Se atoms (46.5%) because of its unsaturated Se-enriched configuration, highly irregular arrangement, and ultrasmall size (0.3 −1 nm). Photocatalytic tests show that the a-MoSe2+x /TiO2(3 wt%) achieves an optimal H2-evolution rate (4984.46 μmol h−1 g−1, AQE = 23.90%), with the 4.51-fold enhancement relative to that of c-MoSe2/TiO2. Hence, a rich unsaturated Se-mediated H2-evolution mechanism is proposed, namely, the abundant unsaturated Se atoms as the active sites can not only provide sufficient proton-adsorption-centers to enrich H+, but also present an outstanding catalytic efficiency to fleetly convert H+ to H2.

Abstract:Hexagonal molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) as an effective non-noble cocatalyst is intensively researched in the photocatalytic H2-evolution field owing to its Pt-like H+-adsorption ability and good conductivity. However, hexagonal Mo2C-modified photocatalysts possess a limited H2-evolution rate because of the weak H-desorption ability. To further improve the activity, cubic MoC was introduced into Mo2C to form the carbon-modified MoC-Mo2C nanoparticles (MoC-Mo2C@C) by a calcination method. The resultant MoC-Mo2C@C (ca. 5 nm) was eventually coupled with TiO2 to acquire high-efficiency TiO2/MoC-Mo2C@C by electrostatic self-assembly. The highest H2-generation rate of TiO2/MoC-Mo2C@C reached of 918 μmol·h−1·g−1, which was 91.8, 2.7, and 1.5 times than that of the TiO2, TiO2/MoC@C, and TiO2/Mo2C@C, respectively. The enhanced rate of TiO2 attributes to the carbon layer as cocatalyst to transmit electrons and the hetero-phase MoC-Mo2C as H2-generation active sites to boost H2-evolution reaction. This research offers a novel insight to design photocatalytic materials for energy applications.

Abstract:In this study, we report nonmetal plasmonic MoS2@TiO2 heterostructures for highly efficient photocatalytic H-2 generation. Large area laminated MoS2 in conjunction with TiO2 nanocavity arrays is achieved via carefully controlled anodization, physical vapor deposition, and chemical vapor deposition processes. The broad spectral response ranging from ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) to near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths and finite element frequency-domain simulations suggest that this MoS2@TiO2 heterostructure enhances photocatalytic activity for H+ reduction. A high H-2 yield rate of 181 mu mol h(-1) cm(-2) (equal to 580 mmol h(-1) g(-1) based on the loading mass of MoS2) is achieved using a low catalyst loading mass. The spatially uniform heterostructure, correlated with plasmon-resonance through the conformal MoS2 coating that effectively regulates charge transfer pathways, is proven to be vitally important for the unique solar energy harvesting and photocatalytic H-2 production. As an innovative exploration, our study demonstrates that the photocatalytic activities of nonmetal, earth-abundant materials can be enhanced with plasmonic effects, which may serve as an excellent catalytic agent for solar energy conversion to chemical fuels.

Abstract:Co-catalyst deposition is used to improve the surface and electrical properties of photocatalysts. In this work, MoSx/CdIn2S4 nanocomposites were prepared by a facile hydrothermal and photodeposition route. The basic crystalline phases and morphology of the as-prepared samples were determined, and these results showed that MoSx was tightly anchored onto CdIn2S4 by sharing the same S atom. In the hydrogen production experiments, MoSx/CdIn2S4-40 displayed the optimal photocatalytic hydrogen production yield in 4 h. The H2 evolution rate reached 2846.73 μmol/g/h, which was 13.6-times higher than that of pure CdIn2S4. Analyzing the photocatalytic enhancement mechanisms revealed that this unique structure had a remarkable photogenerated electron-hole pair separation efficiency, rapid charge carrier transfer channels, and more abundant surface reaction sites. The use of co-catalyst (MoSx) greatly improved the photocatalytic activity of CdIn2S4.

Enhanced photocatalytic activity in H2 production from methanol aqueous solution based on the synthesized Pt-TiO2-decorated MoSe2 nanocomposites

Abstract:In this work, a simple hydrothermal method to synthesize a ternary nanocomposite of Pt-TiO2 decorated on MoSe2 as a photocatalyst for hydrogen (H2) evolution from an aqueous methanol solution. The-as prepared Pt-TiO2/MoSe2 nanocomposite were characterized by XRD, Raman spectra, electron microscopy (FE-SEM/Mapping and HR-TEM), XPS UV-Vis and PL analysis. XRD patterns confirmed the presence of MoSe2 and Pt-TiO2 crystal phases in the Pt-TiO2/MoSe2 nanocomposite. Raman spectra displayed characteristic peaks corresponding to Mo-Se out-of-plane vibration and Pt-TiO2 vibration modes, confirming the successful synthesis of Pt-TiO2/MoSe2 nanocomposite. FE-SEM images showed a sheet-like morphology for MoSe2-NS and spherical Pt/TiO2 particles, with MoSe2 sparsely scattered on the Pt-TiO2 surface with EDS mapping confirmed even element distribution of Pt-TiO2/MoSe2 nanocomposite. TEM images revealed the transparent nature of MoSe2-NS with well-resolved lattice fringes. Pt-TiO2 exhibited uniform dispersion of Pt nanoparticles on TiO2, and the Pt-TiO2/MoSe2 nanocomposite showed integration of MoSe2-NS with Pt-TiO2. HRTEM images confirmed the lattice fringes of MoSe2-NS, Pt, and TiO2 particles. Tauc plot measurements revealed optical band gaps of 2.99 eV for MoSe2-NS, 3.19 eV for Pt-TiO2, and 2.78 eV for Pt-TiO2/MoSe2. XPS analysis confirmed the presence of Mo, Se, Pt, Ti, O, and C elements in the Pt-TiO2/MoSe2 nanocomposite. Based on the photoelectrochemical measurements, the Pt-TiO2/MoSe2 nanocomposite show the lower onset overpotential of 123 mV, which is much higher than Pt-TiO2 (179 mV) and MoSe2 (213 mV) at 10 mA/cm2. The photocatalytic efficiency of Pt-TiO2/MoSe2 nanocomposite in the context of H2 production through the enhancement of aqueous methanol under visible light exposure was assessed across different factors. Among these, the Pt-TiO2/MoSe2 nanocomposite exhibited the highest photoactivity in H2 production at 1337 μmolg−1 after 4 h. These results show the promising potential of the Pt-TiO2/MoSe2 nanocomposite catalyst in addressing both environmental and energy challenges in the future.
