Abstract:Vasculature of the epididymis was investigated by means of corrosion casts. In the boar, epididymal arteries form a complex network around their stem vessel, the testicular artery. Proper perfusion fixation or complete casting therefore require direct injection into one of these branches. To reach the distal cauda, cannulation of the deferential artery is further needed. Connections between all of these feeding vessels occur at the level of the vascular cone. A prominent anastomosis between an epididymal branch and the testicular artery is regularly observed under the caput epididymis. Epididymal veins drain to a large extent into the pampiniform plexus. Unlike the situation in other species, vascularization of testis and epididymis are closely associated in the boar.
Stable organic field-effect-transistors with high mobilities unaffected by supporting dielectric based on phenylene-bridged thienobenzothiophene

Abstract:We report on the electrical properties of organic field-effect transistors (OFET) based on a new class of organic semiconductors. The molecules consist of the same thieno[2,3-b][1]benzothiophene building blocks, connected by different π-bridge spacers (ethylene, phenylene, and fluorophenylene). Molecular orbitals and highest occupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energies were calculated and compared with results from cyclic voltammetric and UV-vis absorption measurements. In order to study the influence of the bridge groups on the molecular arrangement and surface interaction, the transistor performance on a wide range of dielectrics has been investigated in detail. These include as grown SiO2 and Al2O3 and also treated with octadecyltrichrolosilane and octadecylphosphonic acid, as well as Cytop and Parylene C. An extended study of the multitude of combinations of these materials revealed mobilities up to ∼1 cm2/Vs, measured for devices made of the phenylene-bridged compound. Surprisingly, the mobility was quite independent of the supporting gate dielectric. Stability over time has been observed with no degradation after 5 months. By eliminating the hysteresis using Cytop, we were able to show that some of the molecules form films without long-term charge carrier trapping. These are interesting features for practical industrial processing of organic electronics.

Abstract:Three new solution‐processable organic semiconductors (1–3) are synthesized and characterized for p‐type organic field effect transistors (OFETs). The backbone of these small molecules is modified by expanding the central core conjugation from thienothiophene (TT) to dithienothiophene (DTT) and tetrathienoacene (TTA), which are end‐capped with soluble β‐substituted alkyl chains dithienothiophenes (DTTR) to generate DTTR‐TT (1), DTTR‐DTT (2), and DTTR‐TTA (3). The highest mobility of 0.016 cm2 V−1 s−1 is achieved using solution‐sheared DTTR‐TTA film due to the extended conjugated TTA core, which enhances the intermolecular interaction and generates an efficient percolation for the OFET channel. Solution blending of crystalline DTTR‐TT small molecules with oriented‐packing polymer dithienothiophene‐thioalkylbithiophene (PDTT‐SBT) polymer leads to significantly enhanced mobilities from 0.0009 up to 0.22 cm2 V−1 s−1, occurring at an optimized 30% DTTR‐TT composition in the blend. Hole mobility of 30% DTTR‐TT blend is 0.22 cm2 V−1 s−1 which is higher than pristine small molecule DTTR‐TT (0.0009 cm2 V−1 s−1) and polymer PDTT‐SBT (0.067 cm2 V−1 s−1), respectively. An efficient strategy to enhance the mobility of small molecule DTTR‐TT by blending with easily synthesizable PDTT‐SBT polymer is reported.

Abstract:The 3,5-dithiooctyl dithienothiophene based small molecular semiconductor DDTT-DSDTT (1), end functionalized with fused dithienothiophene (DTT) units, was synthesized and characterized for organic field effect transistors (OFET). The thermal, optical, electrochemical, and computed electronic structural properties of 1 were investigated and contrasted. The single crystal structure of 1 reveals the presence of intramolecular locks between S(alkyl)···S(thiophene), with a very short S–S distance of 3.10 Å, and a planar core. When measured in an OFET device compound 1 exhibits a hole mobility of 3.19 cm2 V–1 s–1, when the semiconductor layer is processed by a solution-shearing deposition method and using environmentally acceptable anisole as the solvent. This is the highest value reported to date for an all-thiophene based molecular semiconductor. In addition, solution-processed small molecule/insulating polymer (1/PαMS) blend films and devices were investigated. Morphological analysis reveals a nanoscopic vertical phase separation with the PαMS layer preferentially contacting the dielectric and 1 located on top of the stack. Abstract:A series of novel quinoidal organic semiconductors based on diselenophene‐dithioalkylthiophene (DSpDST) conjugated cores with various side‐chain lengths are designed for solution‐processable organic field effect transistors (OFETs). Remarkably, the compound with the shortest thioalkyl chain, DSpDSTQ‐6, demonstrates ambipolar carrier transport with the highest electron and hole mobilities of 0.334 and 0.463 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively. This work presents a series of novel quinoidal organic semiconductors based on diselenophene‐dithioalkylthiophene (DSpDST) conjugated cores with various side‐chain lengths (‐thiohexyl, ‐thiodecyl, and ‐thiotetradecyl, designated DSpDSTQ‐6, DSpDSTQ‐10, and DSpDSTQ‐14, respectively). The purpose of this research is to develop solution‐processable organic semiconductors using dicyanomethylene end‐capped organic small molecules for organic field effect transistors (OFETs) application. The physical, electrochemical, and electrical properties of these new DSpDSTQs are systematically studied, along with their performance in OFETs and thin film morphologies. Additionally, the molecular structures of DSpDSTQ are determined through density functional theory (DFT) calculations and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis. The results reveal the presence of intramolecular S (alkyl)···Se (selenophene) interactions, which result in a planar SR‐containing DSpDSTQ core, thereby promoting extended π‐orbital interactions and efficient charge transport in the OFETs. Moreover, the influence of thioalkyl side chain length on surface morphologies and microstructures is investigated. Remarkably, the compound with the shortest thioalkyl chain, DSpDSTQ‐6, demonstrates ambipolar carrier transport with the highest electron and hole mobilities of 0.334 and 0.463 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively. These findings highlight the excellence of ambipolar characteristics of solution‐processable OFETs based on DSpDSTQs even under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Based on intensive research, organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs) will likely remain at the zenith in information science for many years due to their numerous potential applications in portable and smart electronic devices. Elucidating the intrinsic charge‐transport behavior and realizing functional OFETs with superior device characteristics have been the cornerstones for the sustainable advancement in organic electronics. The emerging 2D molecular crystals (2DMCs) have become prosperous in the past few years, because they offer a revolutionary opportunity to overcome these obstacles. In particular, 2DMCs, which display a high uniform morphology, can be prepared using low‐cost and scalable solution‐based techniques. More importantly, their highly tunable molecular arrangement at a 2D limit is extraordinarily beneficial in property exploration and device optimization. In this article, the recent breakthroughs in material preparation, transistor applications, and physics of solution‐processed 2DMCs are reviewed, providing a promising avenue toward high‐performance, multifunctional, and diversiform organic electronic devices.
Oligofluorene−Thiophene Derivatives As High-Performance Semiconductors for Organic Thin Film Transistors

Abstract:A series of alkyl chain end-capped oligofluorene-thiophenes have been prepared with high yields using Suzuki or Stille coupling reactions. The electronic and optical properties of the thin films deposited at different substrate temperatures have been investigated. Morphological studies using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed well-interconnected microcrystalline domains in these thin films. X-ray diffraction measurements of the vacuum-evaporated films showed enhanced crystalline order with increasing substrate deposition temperature. Thermal analysis as well as electrochemical measurements of the materials indicated that the new oligomers have high thermal and oxidative stability. Highly ordered polycrystalline vacuum-evaporated films with charge carrier mobility as high as 0.12 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) have been achieved with 5,5'-bis(7-hexyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)-2,2'-bithiophene (DHFTTF). Thin film field-effect transistor (TFT) devices made from these materials showed remarkable stability even after LTV (366 nm) irradiation for more than 48 h in air. The semiconductors exhibit high on/off ratios (up to 105) and no significant decrease in mobility and on/off ratio over several months in air with exposure to ambient light. Finally, bright emission colors from greenish yellow to orange-red were observed in this new series of oligomer solid films excited with LTV light (366 nm). In addition, a comparative study of the newly synthesized oligomers with alpha,alpha'-dihexylsexithiophene (DH6T), one of the most widely investigated oligothiophenes, is presented. The current approach to the molecular design can be applied toward the rational design of new TFT materials.

Abstract:Interface modification is an effective and promising route for developing functional organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). In this context, however, researchers have not created a reliable method of functionalizing the interfaces existing in OFETs, although this has been crucial for the technological development of high-performance CMOS circuits. Here, we demonstrate a novel approach that enables us to reversibly photocontrol the carrier density at the interface by using photochromic spiropyran (SP) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) sandwiched between active semiconductors and gate insulators. Reversible changes in dipole moment of SPs in SAMs triggered by lights with different wavelengths produce two distinct built-in electric fields on the OFET that can modulate the channel conductance and consequently threshold voltage values, thus leading to a low-cost noninvasive memory device. This concept of interface functionalization offers attractive new prospects for the development of organic electronic devices with tailored electronic and other properties.

Abstract:Efficient charge transport and low defect density are desirable in conjugated polymers transistors. However, the properties of conjugated polymers are still limited by intrinsic conformational disorders. Herein, we developed an effective approach to uniform poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) single-crystal films for excellent charge transports. Through the synergistic control of electric field and temperature, precise regulation of crystal kinetics was managed for the growth of P3HT single-crystal films, the organic filed-effect transistor (OFET) performance of which significantly increased up to 0.02 cm 2 /V•s with a low threshold voltage of –1 V and the on/off ratio of 10 6 .

Abstract:Printed organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) have received great interests as potentially low-cost alternative to silicon technology for application in large-area, flexible, and ultra-low-cost electronics. One of the critical materials for TFTs is semiconductor, which has a dominant impact on the transistor properties. We review here the structural studies and design of thiophene-based polymer semiconductors with respect to solution processability, ambient stability, molecular self-organization, and field-effect transistor properties for OTFT applications. We show that through judicial monomer design, delicately controlled pi-conjugation, and strategically positioned pendant side-chain distribution, novel solution-processable thiophene polymer semiconductors with excellent self-organization ability to form extended lamellar pi-stacking orders can be developed. OTFTs using semiconductors of this nature processed in ambient conditions have provided excellent field-effect transistor properties.
Ultrahigh Mobility and Efficient Charge Injection in Monolayer Organic Thin-Film Transistors on Boron Nitride.

Abstract:Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) with high mobility and low contact resistance have been actively pursued as building blocks for low-cost organic electronics. In conventional solution-processed or vacuum-deposited OTFTs, due to interfacial defects and traps, the organic film has to reach a certain thickness for efficient charge transport. Using an ultimate monolayer of 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT) molecules as an OTFT channel, we demonstrate remarkable electrical characteristics, including intrinsic hole mobility over 30 cm2/Vs, Ohmic contact with 100 Ω · cm resistance, and band-like transport down to 150 K. Compared to conventional OTFTs, the main advantage of a monolayer channel is the direct, nondisruptive contact between the charge transport layer and metal leads, a feature that is vital for achieving low contact resistance and current saturation voltage. On the other hand, bilayer and thicker C8-BTBT OTFTs exhibit strong Schottky contact and much higher contact resistance but can be improved by inserting a doped graphene buffer layer. Our results suggest that highly crystalline molecular monolayers are promising form factors to build high-performance OTFTs and investigate device physics. They also allow us to precisely model how the molecular packing changes the transport and contact properties.

Abstract:Abstract Two solution‐processable organic semiconductors, DFPT‐DTTR (1) and DFPbT‐DTTR (2), composed of pentafluorophenyl (FP) end‐capped 3,5‐dialkyl dithienothiophene (DTTR) core with thiophene (T) or bithiophene (bT) as π‐bridged spacers are developed and investigated for their optical, electrochemical, microstructural, and electrical properties. With more conjugated bithiophene units, compound 2 exhibits a red‐shifted UV–vis absorption band and upshifted HOMO/downshifted LUMO energy levels. According to the density functional theory, compound 2 features a more twisted molecular structure due to the intrinsic non‐coplanar blocks in the π‐backbones. Compound 1‐based organic field effect transistors exhibit efficient hole transport with mobility up to 0.48 cm 2 V −1 s −1 . This is one of the high mobility organic semiconductors exhibiting p‐channel characteristics based on solution‐processable small molecular FP end‐capped fused/oligothiophenes. With large and interconnected crystalline morphologies, decreased π–π stacking distance, and less steric hindrance, compound 1 exhibits two orders of magnitude higher mobility than the more distorted 2, which exhibits lower hole mobility of 1.82 × 10 −3 cm 2 V −1 s −1 .

Abstract:Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on oligothiophene-functionalized truxene derivatives have been fabricated for use as novel star-shaped organic semiconductors in solution-processible organic electronics. The electronic and optical properties of compounds 1-3, with increasing numbers of thiophene rings at each of the three branches, have been investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction measurements, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The results show that with a stepwise increase of the thiophene rings at every branch, a transition from a polycrystalline to an amorphous state is observed. The characteristics of compounds 1, 2, and 3 used for OFETs exhibit a significant difference. The mobility depends greatly on the morphology in the solid state, and decreases in going from 1 to 3. Mobilities up to 1.03 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and an on/off ratio of about 10(3) for compound 1 have been achieved; these are the highest values for star-shaped organic semiconductors used for OFETs so far. All the results demonstrate that the truxene core of the oligothiophene-functionalized truxene derivatives not only extends the pi-delocalized system, but also leads to high mobilities for the compounds.

Abstract:Solution-processed organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are essential for developing organic electronics. The encouraging development in solution-processed OFETs has attracted research interest because of their potential in low-cost devices with performance comparable to polycrystalline-silicon-based transistors. In recent years, unidirectional coating technology, featuring thin-film coating along only one direction and involving specific materials as well as solution-assisted fabrication methods, has attracted intensive interest. Transistors with organic semiconductor layers, which are deposited via unidirectional coating methods, have achieved high performance. In particular, carrier mobility has been greatly enhanced to values much higher than 10 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). Such significant improvement is mainly attributed to better control in morphology and molecular packing arrangement of organic thin film. In this review, typical materials that are being used in OFETs are discussed, and demonstrations of unidirectional coating methods are surveyed.
Liquid Crystal-Like Active Layer for High-Performance Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Abstract:High carrier mobility and uniform device performance are of crucial importance for organic field-effect transistor (OFET)-based device and integrated circuit applications. However, strategies for achieving high device performance with small variations from batch to batch are still desired. Here, we report a thin liquid crystal-like film of 2,8-difluoro-5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl) anthradithiophene (dif-TES-ADT) grown on a N,N ′-ditridecylperylene-3,4,9,10-tetra-carboxylic diimide (PTCDI-C 13 ) template, confirmed by atomic force microscopy and polarized fluorescence microscopy. The liquid crystal-like films with large crystalline domains are further employed as carrier transport channels for OFETs. As a result, we achieved high-performance OFETs with a saturation carrier mobility of 1.62 ± 0.26 cm 2 V −1 s −1 and a small variation of 16% among three batches. This finding provides a new strategy to design materials and device structures to simultaneously achieve high carrier mobility and device uniformity.

Abstract:We present here the synthesis, characterization, and transistor performance of three semiconductor materials based on tratzs-1,2-(dithieno[2,3-b:3',2'-d]thiophene)ethene derivatives. Although the incorporation of aromatic, alkyl substituents in both ends of trans-1,2-(dithieno[2,3-b:3',2'-d]thiophene)ethene have a negligible effect on the conjugation length and the energy gap, the subtle chemical modification leads to great variations in film microstructures, electronic properties, and packing arrangements. The appropriate substituents are capable of providing efficient molecular packing arrangements for high carrier mobility. The phenyl-substituted derivative, compound 3, demonstrates a remarkably high thin film FET performance, with mobility up to 2.0 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and on/off ratio up to 10(8). In addition, the devices show good environmental stability, even after storage in air for 7 months.
Diketopyrrolopyrrole-based small molecules for solution-processed n-channel organic thin film transistors

Abstract:Four conjugated molecules with thiophene-flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as the core and 3-(dicyanomethylidene)indan-1-one (IC), dichlorinated IC (2Cl-IC) and difluorinated IC (2F-IC) as termini, i.e. DPP1012, DPP1012-4Cl, DPP1012-4F and DPP68-4F were synthesized. These molecules have similar band gaps of ca. 1.2 eV and deep lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels below -4.1 eV. Single crystal structure analysis showed that DPP68-4F adopted a slipped one dimensional pi-stacking structure with a pi-pi stacking distance of 3.57 angstrom in crystals. Top gate/bottom contact (TG/BC) organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) were fabricated via spin-coating. All molecules exhibited typical n-type characteristics with an electron mobility (mu(e)) of up to 0.44, 0.26, 1.05 and 0.58 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) for DPP1012, DPP1012-4Cl, DPP1012-4F and DPP68-4F, respectively. Devices based on DPP1012-4F displayed the best device performance since its films were characterized by the highest packing order and appropriate film morphology. This work shows the great potential of the integration of the planar conjugated core and IC-type termini in designing solution processable high mobility n-type small molecule semiconductors.
Solution-processed light-emitting dielectric films and their applications in transistors

Abstract:Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with light emission capability have attracted attention with the development of multifunctional devices.1,2 In order to achieve tunable area emission, we employed light-emitting ionic iridium complex (Ir(ppy)2pyim)PF6, as the dielectric material. Results demonstrated that when mixed with some polymer, such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), the complex could form gate dielectric films for light emitting OFETs. At low drain voltage, the FETs behaved as a normal transistor and, at high drain voltage, a controllable area light emission could be successfully achieved. The brightness could be tuned by the potential differences between three electrodes (gate, source and drain electrodes).Our study verified that ionic light-emitting complexes have potential to be used in tunable area-emitting electronic devices.
