Abstract:We investigate the nonlinear interaction between a squeezed cavity mode and a mechanical mode in an optomechanical system (OMS) that allows us to selectively obtain either a radiation-pressure coupling or a parametric-amplification process. The squeezing of the cavity mode can enhance the interaction strength into the single-photon strong-coupling regime, even when the OMS is originally in the weak-coupling regime. Moreover, the noise of the squeezed mode can be suppressed completely by introducing a broadband-squeezed vacuum that is phase-matched with the parametric amplification that squeezes the cavity mode. This proposal offers an alternative approach to control OMS using a squeezed cavity mode, which should allow single-photon quantum processes to be implemented with currently available optomechanical technology. Potential applications range from engineering single-photon sources to nonclassical phonon states.

Abstract:Abstract To achieve a high degree of quantum noise squeezing, nonlinear optical interaction process is often employed. Here, we propose to utilize quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) and Fano resonances to enhance optical squeezing without nonlinearity. The theory of quantization for electromagnetic fields in the periodic nanostructure with dispersion and absorption has been developed by means of the Green’s function technique with the plane wave expansion method. The quasi-BICs and Fano resonances of radiation modes are realized by designing the photonic crystal slab structure. Based on these quasi-BICs and Fano resonances, we demonstrate that strong squeezed states can be realized by using the balanced homodyne detection scheme. The squeezing degree can be improved by more than 14 times when a weak squeezed states passes through the structure with quasi-BICs and Fano resonances. The advantage of this method is that it is not only efficient but also easy to implement because the nonlinear optical processes are not employed, which is very beneficial for the quantum information processing and precision metrology.

Light squeezing enhancement by coupling nonlinear optical cavities

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the squeezing effect generated by two coupled optical cavities. Each cavity contains a second-order nonlinear material and coherently pumped by a laser. Our results show that light intensity is strongly improved due to the presence of the nonlinearities and mainly depends on the detunings between external laser frequencies and cavity modes. More interestingly, the proposed scheme could enhance light squeezing for moderate coupling between cavities : the squeezing generated by one cavity is enhanced by the other one. For resonant interaction, highest squeezing effect is obtained near resonance. When fields are non resonant, squeezing increases near resonance of the considered cavity, but decreases for large detunings relative to the second cavity. Further, when the dissipation rate of the second cavity is smaller than the first, the squeezing could be improved, attaining nearly the perfect squeezing. While the temperature elevation has a negative impact overall on the nonclassical light, squeezing shows an appreciable resistance against thermal baths for appropriate parameter sets.

Abstract:The interaction strength of an oscillator to a qubit grows with the oscillator's vacuum field fluctuations. The well known degenerate parametric oscillator has revived interest in the regime of strongly detuned squeezing, where its eigenstates are squeezed Fock states. Owing to these amplified field fluctuations, it was recently proposed that squeezing this oscillator would dynamically boost qubit-photon interactions. In a superconducting circuit experiment, we observe a two-fold increase in the dispersive interaction between a qubit and an oscillator at 5.5 dB of squeezing, demonstrating in-situ dynamical control of qubit-photon interactions. This work initiates the experimental coupling of oscillators of squeezed photons to qubits, and cautiously motivates their dissemination in experimental platforms seeking enhanced interactions.

Abstract:We propose an experimentally feasible method for enhancing the atom-field coupling as well as the ratio between this coupling and dissipation (i.e., cooperativity) in an optical cavity. It exploits optical parametric amplification to exponentially enhance the atom-cavity interaction and, hence, the cooperativity of the system, with the squeezing-induced noise being completely eliminated. Consequently, the atom-cavity system can be driven from the weak-coupling regime to the strong-coupling regime for modest squeezing parameters, and even can achieve an effective cooperativity much larger than 100. Based on this, we further demonstrate the generation of steady-state nearly maximal quantum entanglement. The resulting entanglement infidelity (which quantifies the deviation of the actual state from a maximally entangled state) is exponentially smaller than the lower bound on the infidelities obtained in other dissipative entanglement preparations without applying squeezing. In principle, we can make an arbitrarily small infidelity. Our generic method for enhancing atom-cavity interaction and cooperativities can be implemented in a wide range of physical systems, and it can provide diverse applications for quantum information processing.
The Spectrum of Squeezing in Degenerate Four‐Wave Mixing

Abstract:We analyze a simple model for degenerate four wave mixing, introduced by Savage and Walls. In the resonant case, the system exhibits a phase instability when the pump intensity is increased well beyond the threshold for generation of the signal mode. Still in the resonant configuration, we calculate the amplitude and phase squeezing spectra both for the signal and the pump mode. In the signal (pump) mode, the squeezing becomes especially large when the signal (pump) mode is much more damped than the pump (signal) mode. The signal field can exhibit both phase and amplitude squeezing, in distinct domains of the parameter space. On the other hand, the pump field can show squeezing only in the amplitude quadrature component. In general, the model exhibits sizable squeezing over very extended regions of the parameter space.
Dissipative stabilization of squeezing beyond 3 dB in a microwave mode

Abstract:While a propagating state of light can be generated with arbitrary squeezing by pumping a parametric resonator, the intra-resonator state is limited to 3 dB of squeezing. Here, we implement a reservoir engineering method to surpass this limit using superconducting circuits. Two-tone pumping of a three-wave-mixing element implements an effective coupling to a squeezed bath which stabilizes a squeezed state inside the resonator. Using an ancillary superconducting qubit as a probe allows us to perform a direct Wigner tomography of the intra-resonator state. The raw measurement provides a lower bound on the squeezing at about $6.7 \pm 0.2$ dB below the zero-point level. Further, we show how to correct for resonator evolution during the Wigner tomography and obtain a squeezing as high as $8.2 \pm 0.8$ dB. Moreover, this level of squeezing is achieved with a purity of $-0.4 \pm 0.4$ dB.

Abstract:Being beneficial for the amplitude modulation of the pump laser, we propose a simple yet surprisingly effective mechanical squeezing scheme in a standard optomechanical system. By merely introducing a specific kind of periodic modulation into the single-tone driving field to cool down the mechanical Bogoliubov mode, the far beyond 3-dB strong mechanical squeezing can be engineered without requiring any additional techniques. Specifically, we find that the amount of squeezing is not simply dependent on the order of magnitude of the effective optomechanical coupling but strongly on the ratio of sideband strengths for it. To maximize the mechanical squeezing, we numerically and analytically optimize this ratio in the steady-state regime, respectively. The mechanical squeezing engineered in our scheme also has strong robustness and can survive at a high bath temperature. Compared with previous schemes based on the two-tone pump technique, our scheme involves fewer external control laser source and can be extended to other quantum systems to achieve strong squeezing effect.
Multimode amplitude squeezing through cascaded nonlinear optical processes

Abstract:Multimode squeezed light is enticing for several applications, from squeezed frequency combs for spectroscopy to signal multiplexing in optical computing. To generate squeezing in multiple frequency modes, optical parametric oscillators have been vital in realizing multimode squeezed vacuum states through second-order nonlinear processes. However, most work has focused on generating multimode squeezed vacua and squeezing in mode superpositions (supermodes). Bright squeezing in multiple discrete frequency modes, if realized, could unlock novel applications in quantum-enhanced spectroscopy and optical quantum computing. Here, we show how $Q$ factor engineering of a multimode nonlinear cavity with cascaded three wave mixing processes creates strong, spectrally tunable single mode output amplitude noise squeezing over 10 dB below the shot noise limit. In addition, we demonstrate squeezing for multiple discrete frequency modes above threshold. This bright squeezing arises from enhancement of the (noiseless) nonlinear rate relative to decay rates in the system due to the cascaded generation of photons in a single idler "bath" mode. A natural consequence of the strong nonlinear coupling in our system is the creation of an effective cavity in the synthetic frequency dimension that sustains Bloch oscillations in the modal energy distribution. Bloch mode engineering could provide an opportunity to better control nonlinear energy flow in the synthetic frequency dimension, with exciting applications in quantum random walks and topological photonics. Lastly, we show evidence of long-range correlations in amplitude noise between discrete frequency modes, pointing towards the potential of long-range entanglement in a synthetic frequency dimension.

Entanglement Assisted Squeezed States of Light in All Fiber Form-Factor

Abstract:Squeezed light sources, featuring significant degrees of squeezing, flexible time-frequency attributes, and a compact salable form factor, serve as crucial building blocks in an expanding range of applications, spanning from quantum computing to quantum sensing and communications. In this study, we introduce and demonstrate a novel approach to generating squeezed light that exclusively employs standard telecommunication fiber-optic components. The technique leverages the entanglement properties of spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) to generate high squeezing with flexible time-frequency properties. Notably, a record squeezing of 7.5 $\pm$0.1 dB is measured within an all-fiber, all-guided-wave platform. The entanglement-assisted squeezing methodology empowers the attainment of squeezing for arbitrary time-frequency modes within the SFWM phase-matching bandwidth, extending beyond coherent laser modes, for the first time. In particular, we measured 5.1 dB and 1.1 dB squeezing on partially coherent and chaotic time-frequency modes that are defined by randomly modulated laser sources and filtered amplified spontaneous emission light, respectively.

Abstract:We present a method for describing nonlinear electromagnetic interactions in integrated photonic devices utilizing an asymptotic-in/out field formalism. Our method expands upon previous continuous wave asymptotic treatments by describing the evolution non-perturbatively for an arbitrary pulsed input. This is presented in the context of a squeezing interaction within an integrated microring resonator side coupled to an input/output waveguide, but is readily generalizable to other integrated structures, while including a variety of (non-squeezing) third-order interactions. An example of a single-pump, non-degenerate squeezing interaction is studied, which is shown to match well with standard coupled-mode treatments for high-finesse resonators, as well as previous perturbative treatments dealing with the generation of pairs with low probability.

Abstract:Quantum noiseless linear amplification (NLA) is an important tool for long-distance optical quantum communication. In this paper, we show that NLA with linear optics and photon counts can be further improved by applying quadrature squeezing. Moreover, we find that such enhancement through squeezing can be observed even when a photon dichotic on-off detector and a pseudo-single-photon state are applied to the amplification process. Superposition of macroscopically squeezed states with enhanced squeezing in cavity optomechanical system at single-photon level

Abstract: We propose an efficient approach to generate the superposed macroscopically squeezed states with enhanced squeezing in a two-mode optomechanical system. This can be achieved by introducing a sinusoidal modulation to either the cavity frequencies or the coupling strengths between two cavity modes. The squeezement of the oscillator can be significantly enhanced to 12.16 dB with single photon, once the relative ratio of coupling strength is optimized under proper conditions. Further enhanced squeezing can be obtained by carefully adjusting the system parameters. In terms of the Wigner quasi-probability distribution, we show the squeezed error ellipses and interference fringes of the Yurke-Stoler-type squeezed states, denoting the squeezing and superposition properties. Our state generation scheme show reliable performance and robust resistance to finite environmental fluctuations, which implies applications for both fundamental interest and practical value.
Strong Thermomechanical Noise Squeezing Stabilized by Feedback

Abstract:Squeezing the quadrature noise of a harmonic oscillator used as a sensor can enhance its sensitivity in certain measurment schemes. The canonical approach, based on parametric modulation of the oscillation frequency, is usually limited to a squeezing of at most 3 dB. However, this can be overcome by additional stabilization of the anti-squeezed quadrature. Here, we apply this approach to highly-stressed silicon nitride membrane resonators, with effective masses of the order few nanograms and quality factors routinely exceeding 108, which hold promise for sensing applications in both the classical and quantum regimes. We benchmark their performance using either piezo or capacitive parametric modulation. We observe maximum thermomechanical squeezing by record-high 17 dB and 21 dB, respectively, and we argue that even larger values can be attained with minimal changes to the device design. Finally, we provide a full quantum theory of a combination of this approach with quantum-limited motion measurement and conclude that quantum squeezing is attainable at moderate cryogenic temperatures.

Abstract:We propose a theoretical method to enhance the coherent dipole coupling between two atoms in an optical cavity via parametrically squeezing the cavity mode. In the present scheme, conditions for coherent coupling are derived in detail and diverse dynamics of the system can be obtained by regulating system parameters. In the presence of environmental noise, an auxiliary squeezed field is employed to suppress and even completely eliminate the additional noise induced by squeezing. In addition, we demonstrate that our scheme enables the effective suppression of atomic spontaneous emission. The results in our investigation could be used for diverse applications in quantum technologies.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to realize nonreciprocal mechanical squeezing in a spinning optomechanical system, where a spinning resonator is driven by a periodically modulated laser field via a tapered optical fiber. The spinning resonator supports two counterpropagating optical modes and a mechanical breathing mode induced by the radiation pressure. According to the optical Sagnac effect, the two counterpropagating optical modes obtain opposite frequency shifts. By utilizing the modulated pump field with a given frequency, mechanical squeezing can only be achieved by driving the resonator from one direction but not from the other. We analyze the impact of backscattering losses on mechanical squeezing and find that this negative impact can be almost completely avoided by increasing the angular velocity of the resonator. We also show that the presented scheme is robust to mechanical thermal noise and can be realized under the current experimental conditions. Therefore, this work may be meaningful for the study of quantum nonreciprocity and quantum precision measurement.

Abstract:Squeezing is a resource that enables precision enhancements in quantum metrology and can be used as a basis for the generation of entanglement by linear optics. While strong squeezing is challenging to generate in optical fields, here we present simple periodic modulation protocols in optomechanical systems that can generate large squeezing of their mechanical degrees of freedom for realistic system parameters. We then proceed to show how such protocols can serve to improve the measurement precision of weak forces and enhance the generation of entanglement between test masses that are subject to any kind of weak interaction. Moreover, these protocols can be reverted to reduce the amount of injected energy, while preserving the generated entanglement and making it more resilient to noise. We present the principle at work, discuss its application in a variety of physical settings, including levitated and tethered mechanical harmonic oscillators, and present example applications to Casimir and gravitational forces.
